Importance of Communication Essay

Communication can be defined as sending and receiving information through face-to-face conversation or via email and phone about anything. When one is good at communicating information the receiver can perceive it very clearly and there is no scope for misunderstandings. Being a good communicator comes in handy in every aspect of life whether one is a student, in professional as well as personal life. If one is not able to convey well it leads to miscommunication.

Here in the importance of communication essays in English, we will explore different ways to write them. We have provided a long and short essay on the importance of communication.

Long Essay on Importance of Communication

In this long importance of communication essay, we will go through the meaning, types, and importance to give a proper idea in simple words to the reader.

Communication meaning has changed drastically throughout only a couple of years since the advent of technology. Earlier communication meant having to converse about feelings, emotions, views, and ideas all while sitting before one another or in a group. With technology, one can communicate via email where one can send a message to an entire group.

The influx of smartphones has brought about an entirely different culture of communication. Smartphones have cameras that make it easier to communicate via video calls and conference calls between a group of people are also possible today. This generation of millennials is also adapting to social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram for business and personal communication as well.

However, with the rapid changes in technology the fact that only good communication will get the job done remains unchanged. Before understanding the ways to better communicate with others we should understand the parts and types of communication.

Parts of communication include the sender who forms the message, then the message itself which should be very clear and understandable, and the receiver whose job is to decode the message. There is a high probability that the same message can be perceived poles apart by two different people. This problem can be avoided when the sender understands the mode of communication.

Types of Communication

There are many different types and modes of communication, like verbal, non-verbal, written, visual and formal, and informal communication.

The most common one is Verbal Communication which involves the use of speech and language by both the sender and receiver. The message here is conveyed through the usage of words.

In non-verbal communication, the body language of the parties involved in communication or discussion is important. It is not an overly loud way of conversing, so the signs can likely be missed or misinterpreted in this type of communication. One should be a shrewd observer to understand the subtle ways of non-verbal communication. It is in the movement of limbs, eyes, the direction of tilted shoulders, or whether one is fidgeting and flinching, etc.

The written form of communication is a crucial one and at the same time, it is very tricky. One must very carefully construct the words in a written form as this can be documented for years to come. The use of written communication is in professional terms like circulars, memos, letters, and bank statements. Only experts get involved in drafting written statements when legalities are concerned.

Visual communication means conveying information through graphical representation like statistical data, pie charts, and bar graphs. All of this should also be based on facts and not mere assumptions.

The formal way of communicating is obeyed with colleagues and seniors wherein the sender needs to be controlled and measured in words as everything is for official purpose.

Informal communication is with peers and friends groups where there is a camaraderie between such groups and it can be casual with no rules and obligations and formalities.

When one is not a good communicator the repercussions can be of varying degrees to different people. In an official environment if miscommunication occurs one might even be suspended or lose their job. So one must learn the ways and importance of good communication.

Ways to Be a Good Communicator:

Knowing the audience one is addressing is the primary and most important step. If there is a younger audience the language must be simple and targeted specifically to them. Using difficult language and big words to show off one’s ability in such a case is futile.

Usage of a non-verbal mode of communication can be very effective. Like making eye contact when speaking can give a better understanding of the extent of grasping information of the audience.

Preparation before speaking is very important. One must be fully aware of the importance and objective of the message to be conveyed.

Usage of images and drawings, if need be one must explain using pictures as they can give a different perspective to the audience you are passing on the information to.

Be clear and precise and there is no need to add extra pieces of information when not required.

Listening more attentively before jumping to conclusions is very important.

Need and Importance of Good Communication:

Promotes cooperation and improves the working environment. When everyone is on the same page about what is expected, then people work in teams to complete the task.

Enhances working relationships and fosters a strong team. When there is good communication practice there are no misunderstandings and people find it easier to trust others.

Effective communication increases managerial efficiency. As higher management can trust their subordinates to do the work in less time than allotted.

Decision-making becomes easier as everyone can contribute their ideas and brainstorming also can be fun and creative.

Healthy relationships can be formed be it professional or personal. When one can communicate themselves well enough then they earn the respect of others and this only forms lasting bonds.

Why Communication Matters

We communicate to create, maintain, and change relationships and selves..

  • In communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships.
  • We communicate to work our way through family changes and challenges in verbal and non-verbal ways.

I remember seeing a poster on my junior high classroom wall: “Communication is the Beginning of Understanding.” This spoke to me at the time. Yet, like so many people, I had never really thought much about communication. I would have described communication as sending and receiving messages.

Communication Is More Than Sending and Receiving Messages

In reality, communication is often about transmitting information. We send and receive messages with people in our lives. Daily, much of our communication consists of coordinating schedules, “What time are you getting home for dinner?” and negotiating whose turn it is to do the dishes, pay the bills, or take dinner to a friend who is ill. We send messages like, “It is your turn to let the dog out” and receive messages like, “Don’t forget to get dog food at the store” (if you have not guessed, a lot of the messages in my house are about the dog).

We might also blame problems on communication, talking about “communication breakdowns” or on a “lack of communication.” If we think about communication in these ways, we have missed so much that is important about communication. We have neglected how and why communication matters.

Communication Matters to Creating and Changing Relationships

We become aware of how Communication Matters when

  • We confront issues with work-life balance.
  • We experience positive events like the birth of a baby or winning an award.
  • We have a friend does who does not do or say what we expect.
  • We have disagreements over religious beliefs or political values.

Both positive and challenging events affect, reflect, and change our identity and the identity of our personal and family relationships. What do I mean by this? How did these relationships come into being? Well, think about the last time you started a new friendship or had a new member join your family. Through what you and the other person said and did, what we’d call verbal and nonverbal communication , these relationships took shape.

Sometimes relationships develop easily and clearly. They are healthy and pleasant. Other times, relationships develop in stress and storm and may be healthy or not. How we communicate helps relationships get off on the right foot, navigate problems, and change over time.

What is important to understand is that relationships are talked into (and out of) being. In communication, we develop, create, maintain, and alter our relationships. As we communicate, we become and change who we are. Think about how you have grown and changed as you communicate at home, at work, with friends, and in your community.

Communication Matters to Relationship and Family Identity

As we communicate, we co-create relationships and our own identity. As you think about your close relationships and your family, you can likely recall important events, both positive and negative, that impacted how you understand your relationship and yourself as a person.

Consider this example: one of my college students described a childhood family ritual of going out on the front lawn on Christmas Eve. The family sang Christmas carols and threw carrots on the roof for Santa’s reindeers. The family still does this annual carrot-throwing ritual in adulthood. You can picture them bringing their sometimes confused new partners and spouses out in the snow to throw carrots onto the roof and sing.

Why does this family still throw carrots and sing? Through this seemingly silly ritual, the family celebrates who they are as a family and the togetherness that is important to them. The family creates space for new people to join the family. Through their words and actions, members of the family teach their new partners how to be family members through carrot throwing and other vital experiences.

I am sure you can point to experiences that have been central to creating your relationships and your identity.

Communication Matters as We Face Change and Challenges

We also communicate to work our way through family changes and challenges. Family members or others may have different expectations of what our family and personal identity or should be. This is especially true when a family does not fit dominant cultural models, such as single-parent families, multi-ethnic families, stepfamilies, LGBTQ families, or adoptive families.

important of communication essay

For me, becoming a stepfamily was highly challenging. We became a stepfamily when I was 12 years old. My mother had recently died, and my Dad surprised us, kids, introducing us to the woman he wanted to marry. We no longer matched the other families in the neighborhood where we’d lived most of our lives. We certainly did not feel like a family overnight.

It took my stepfamily several years to create an understanding of what it meant to be a family. As we interacted, and with many mistakes and some successes, we slowly came to understand what we needed and expected from each other to be a family.

For all of us, relationship and family identity is constantly developing and changing. In my case, I remember my stepmom reminding me to wear a jacket when going out in the evening, even into my 40s, and giving me advice about my health. At some point, our roles changed, and now, as she moves toward her 80s, more often than not, I am in the role of asking about her health and helping her with significant decisions. What it means to be a mother or daughter and what we expect of each other and ourselves change as we interact.

Communication Matters . Whether we are negotiating whose turn it is to feed the dog, how to become a parent, how to interact with a difficult co-worker, or how to celebrate with a friend who won a major award, it is in communication that we learn what to do and say. Having been active in the Society for Young Clinical Laboratorians (SYCL) 2 for several years, the opportunity to give something back as a speaker at the SYLC Workshop preceding the 2016 AACC Annual Meeting was an honor. The SYCL workshop centered around the theme of communication and leadership, and I was asked to provide insight into effective communication with staff and trainees—a rare chance to reflect on the soft skills that we all use every day. These are the skills that some believe can't be taught. This may be true, but time spent on thoughtful contemplation of what we do and how we do it is usually time well spent. Researching and reflecting on this topic has raised my awareness of the importance of communication, including communication challenges such as providing constructive feedback and listening. Below, I attempt to share my findings and my experience.

Mind the say-do gap.

Make the complex simple.

Find your own voice.

Be visible.

Listen with your eyes as well as your ears.

Notice that these 5 habits have little to do with what one says but rather how one says it. Keeping your message simple and genuine will go a long way. In addition, more than half of communication is nonverbal including body language, gestures, and eye contact. It is important to be aware of what you are saying nonverbally. Even a brief moment of checking your email during someone's presentation conveys a nonverbal message. Styles of communication vary. An excellent article by Mark Murphy distills communication into 4 styles: analytical, intuitive, functional, and personal ( 2 ). Although no style is superior, effective communicators know how to recognize and match their communication style with their audience whether it be their boss, peers, direct reports, or trainees.

As leaders and educators, some of our most valuable and formative communication will be in the form of feedback. Statements such as “great job” and “well done” are easy to give and are certainly well received. However, the receiver may be left wondering what specifically they did that was great and wondering if there are areas that could be improved. When giving feedback, it is important to be positive (if it is genuine), be specific, be immediate (or at least timely), and be tough if needed, but not mean (or rob the recipients of their dignity) ( 3 ). In many cases, the person receiving the feedback recognizes what is going well and what is not, so start by asking for his or her perspective. Ask them how they feel they performed or if there are areas they want to improve upon. This step opens the door for constructive feedback without a defensive atmosphere. Formative feedback should be given in private and not in the hallway or in front of peers. And although it is often a delicate process, honest assessment of a person's progress can lead to substantial growth and improvement.

In my experience, the most underused and least perfected communication skill is listening. In professional settings, individuals with authority should listen more (i.e., talk less). I have a favorite quote: “Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply” (Stephen Covey). To illustrate the truth of this statement, I asked the SYCL workshop attendees to pair up and do an exercise in listening. Each pair chose one person to be a speaker and one to be a listener. The speaker was asked to talk about any topic they wanted to for 2 minutes. The listener's job was to listen and not say a word. Just listen. As I watched this exercise unfold, I observed listeners who were struggling not to speak, desperately wanting to share their own story, offer their advice, and provide their feedback. On discussing the activity, attendees felt that “just listening” was difficult and far more challenging than speaking. This is more food-for-thought in our daily interactions.

Finally, it was indeed a rare (and somewhat terrifying) opportunity to stand in front of the next generation of leaders and be asked to provide them with a few personal golden nuggets of professional advice. Initially, it was overwhelming, but once I really thought about what I have found to be important in my professional interactions, the following came to light: ( a ) Say what you mean and mean what you say (even when it's easier to say what you think people want to hear). ( b ) In leadership and management relations, a “unified front” will make your job easier and your team more confident. Conversely, a “divided front” will do the opposite—create division in the work unit and drain positive energy from the team. ( c ) Don't tip-toe around the hard stuff, it won't go away. ( d ) Be real. And perhaps most importantly, ( e ) wrap it all up in a package of kindness.

Communication Essay

Communication is sending and receiving information via phone calls, emails, and in-person conversations. When information is conveyed effectively, the receiver may understand it extremely well and there is no room for misunderstandings. Here are a few sample essays on communication.

  • 100 Words Essay On Communication

Every one of us uses a medium to communicate our daily experiences; this might be an expression, a gesture, a speech pattern, etc. These are all many forms of communication. Communication is a way for people to share their opinions with one another. Being a good communicator is useful in many facets of life, whether one in a school/university, in the workplace, or in personal relationships. Miscommunication results from poor communication skills. The widespread use of smartphones has resulted in a whole new culture of communication. Due to the cameras on smartphones, video calls are now more common, and group conference calls are also now an option.

200 Words Essay On Communication

500 words essay on communication.

Communication Essay

The notion of communication has undergone a significant alteration in just a few years since technology's invention. Earlier forms of communication required people to discuss their thoughts, feelings, and emotions while seated next to one another or in a group. Thanks to technology, it is possible to deliver a message to a large group via email. For both commercial and personal communication, this generation of millennials is adjusting to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

Flow of Communication

People's attitudes, beliefs, and even methods of thinking can change as a result of communication. In daily life, communication is essential. It is possible to transmit knowledge through conversation. It transfers knowledge from one area, individual, or group to another. Communication serves as a way or means for connecting people and places. It has expanded to relate to diverse perspectives.

Every kind of communication conveys a message. Communication that flows from superiors to subordinates is downward communication like from principal to teachers or from teachers to students. Communication that flows from subordinates to superiors is upward communication like from students to teachers or teachers to principal. Horizontal communication takes place between two equals, that is, between two teachers or between two students.

There are two sides to every conversation. There is a sender and a recipient involved. A message may be sent in the form of facts, instructions, questions, feelings, opinions, ideas, or in any other way. Only when the sender and the recipient have a shared understanding can communication take place. Common elements such as culture, language, and environment are included in the commonness. For persons with comparable cultural origins, words, phrases, idioms, proverbs, gestures, and expressions have tremendous potential for communication.

Importance of Communication

The idea that effective communication is the only thing that will get the work done is still true despite the tremendous advancements in technology. Understanding the components and varieties of communication is necessary before learning how to communicate with people more effectively. The sender generates the message, followed by the message itself, which should be extremely clear and understood, and the recipient’s responsibility is to decode the message. There is a good chance that two distinct persons will have completely different perspectives on the same message. The sender can prevent this issue if they are aware of the communication channel.

Types of Communication

Verbal, non-verbal, written, visual, formal, and informal communication are different forms of communication that exist.

Verbal communication includes both the sender and the recipient using voice and language. Here, words are used to communicate the message.

The body language of the individuals engaged in communication or debate is crucial in nonverbal communication. Since the conversation is not particularly loud, it is probable that the indicators may be overlooked or misunderstood. To be able to decipher the subtleties of non-verbal communication, one must be an astute observer.

The written mode of communication is incredibly important. One must very carefully construct the words in a written form as this can be documented for years to come. Professional documents including circulars, memoranda, letters, and bank statements are examples of written communication.

Information may be communicated visually by using graphical images like pie charts, bar graphs, and statistical statistics. This should all be supported by actual data, not just conjecture.

With teachers and principals, the formal method of communication is observed, where the students convey everything in a formal manner.

Informal communication takes place among groups of peers and friends and can be relaxed with no rules, commitments, or formality.

The effects of poor communication skills might vary in severity for various people. Therefore, one must master the principles and value of effective communication.

How To Be A Good Communicator

The first and most important stage is understanding the audience one is targeting. If there is a younger audience, the language ought to be straightforward and tailored to them. In this situation, it is pointless to demonstrate one's skill using complex language and big words.

Speak confidently.

Nonverbal communication may be used quite successfully like making eye contact when speaking, this can help you gauge how much of what you're saying is being understood by the audience.

Before speaking, preparation is crucial. The significance and goal of the message to be given must be well understood.

If necessary, one must explain the use of photos and drawings since they might provide the audience with a new perspective.

Introduction

All of us share our day to day life experience through a medium; it can be thought our expression, our gesture, our way of speaking, etc. all these are different ways of communication. I can simply state communication as a medium for sharing our thoughts from one person to another.

There are different types of people in this world and some of them are good at writing whereas some of them are good at speaking. Those who can speak well like to express their thoughts verbally; whereas those who are good at writing like to share their thoughts in a written way. Normally people prefer talking in their day-to-day life.

Why Communication is Important?

We cannot live alone without any help, somewhere in life we need certain things and we need a medium to express and it is the way of communication. Communication is a process to let others know our thoughts. Suppose if speaking would only be the medium to communicate then how the dumb person would communicate. It means it includes speaking, reading, writing, etc.

Any medium like messaging, audio, video, etc. are different means of communication. All of them are important and helps us in different ways. It is useful in many ways, we gain knowledge, we get entertained, our education, etc. all are possible just because of communication.

I can say that we cannot imagine life without communication. It is helpful in various ways and day by day new discoveries like the internet, mobile phone, etc. have made it more convenient. Today we can know what’s going on around the world just on a single click.

Essay 2 (400 Words) – Communication: A Way of Self-Expression

Expressing ourselves is an art and some of us like to use their verbal power whereas some like to express themselves non-verbally. A small child doesn’t know how to ask for food or other needs, he simply cries but his parents always understand and fulfill his needs. How was it possible for a child to communicate when he does not even know any language? Actually, communication is a way of expressing ourselves.

How can we Communicate

There are different mediums of communication and one of the most important ones is verbal, by speaking. Most of us fulfill our needs by talking or telling. The medium through which one can easily understand your thoughts is one of your best mediums of communication. I have discussed different ways of communication below;

  • Our Gesture: Our gesture speaks a lot about us and we don’t have to explain either we need a certain thing or not. So, the gesture is also one of the common ways to express yourself.
  • Facial Expression: Have you ever seen your face when you taste a lemon? Actually, you don’t have to say anything; your expression speaks a lot about you. Our expression can easily tell what we are thinking and is another best way of communication.
  • Using Symbols: All of us use different chatting apps where we text others, we use certain signs and emojis which tells the reader what we want to say. It is quite popular these days and all of us use it.
  • Sign language: God has not gifted all of us with speaking and listening abilities. There are some who can’t speak so, for them there is a special language developed called sign language. It is a different language in which people speak with the help of different signs.
  • Videos: We watch different movies, TV shows, etc. and get entertained and this is another medium of communication. The video maker delivers his thoughts or a message through his video and we understand that.
  • Music: Music is something the language of our heart; sometimes we feel that as if the lyrics have been written for us because we understand it and really enjoy it. It is so powerful medium of communication that sometimes we feel sad and also happy according to the lyrics.
  • Writing: Many of us are very good at writing and you would have read many poets, they write so nicely that it touches our hearts. Sometimes when we read a novel we feel as if the author is talking to us, things seem so lively. It is an art and another way of communication

Communication helps the world to know one another. There are different mediums of communication and it depends on us, which medium we choose. All over I can say that we should be experts in at least on the ways of communication because it will help us in many ways in personal development.

Essay 3 (500 – 600 Words) – What is Communication, Its Types and Importance

All of us need a medium to express our thoughts as well as our needs and this medium has been termed as communication. We talk, take pictures, share our thoughts and all these things are different modes of communication. Really communication is a very important medium.

What is Communication?

The word communication has been derived from a Latin word and its real meaning was ‘to share’. A process through which we share our thoughts, ideas, etc is termed as communication. Some basic skills of communication are listening, writing, and speaking. All of these together justify the term communication.

Different Mediums of Communication

There are different mediums of communication but some of them are the main like Verbal, Non-verbal.

  • Verbal Communication: Where you will conversate verbally, you need a language to communicate. It can be done orally or in a written way like through personal talks, addressing a group of people, messaging, etc.
  • Non-Verbal Communication: A communication where you don’t need to speak or utter a word some of its examples are: Communicating through expressions, with simple eye contact, body language, touch, gesture, etc. are some of the most common mediums of non-verbal communication.

Importance of Communication

The way we need food to live similarly communication is also an integral part of life. We can’t expect a life without talking to anyone or in other words, we cannot expect life in which we cannot share things.

  • Transfers Knowledge: It helps us to learn new things whenever someone invents something new, they inform others and the world gets familiar with the new thing. How this got possible? Through communication, they informed everyone and we also learned about the new thing. Not only this, but students also go to school, where teachers explain them and give them knowledge just with the help of communication. So, I can say that communication helps us to gain knowledge.
  • Helps us to Coordinate: It is not possible to work with others without communicating. It helps us to coordinate; otherwise, the same team members will do the task in different ways. Communication is very important for coordination. A team needs a guild line and it is possible through coordination.
  • Boosts your Relationship: Communication is one of the best ways to strengthen your bond with your loved ones, either it is your mother, teacher, beloved, etc. An effective way of talking can really make our bonds strong and those relations survive for a long time.
  • Develops Confidence: A person with good communication skills is also confident, it helps people to express their views clearly. Reading increases knowledge and also affects our speaking skills. Generally, leaders have a very good speaking ability and it also increases their confidence.
  • Entertains Us: What you generally do when you are bored? You prefer watching TV or listen to music. Sometimes we also go to watch a movie. All of these are different forms of entertainment. This shows that communication is also necessary for entertainment. Apart from this nowadays we like watching comedy shows and they are the best example of people with good communication skills.

All of us communicate and we enjoy this process, either we have to read or talk to our dear ones. We learn a lot through this medium and it also entertains us. It is a word with lots of meaning. Those who can’t talk can also communicate throw their facial expression or in a written way.

Importance of Communication in an Organization – Essay

The essay on this page explores the importance of communication in an organization.

Introduction

  • Importance of communication in organizations

Types of communication in organizations

Communication systems in organizations, the flow of information in organizations, reference list.

Communication is the process of passing information from one person to another with the intention of creating a shared comprehension. Organizational communication on the other hand is the conveyance of information within an organizational setting. Communication is essential in every organization because it entails information that plays an important role in effective performance.

Every organization has set a number of objectives in order to be competitive in the ever changing world. In order to achieve the set objectives and to gain comparative advantage, organizations should invest in proper communication procedures and channels. This essay explores the importance of communication in an organization, the types of communication present in organizations, communication systems in organizations and flow of information.

Importance of organizational communication

Communication is one of the crucial components in every organization and its efficacy is the secret in realizing overall organizational success. Communication can only be considered efficient when the receiver of the information understands the subject and the meaning of the message conveyed. The function helps employees and management to interact with each other in order to align individual goals with organizational goals.

Furthermore, communication helps in the setting and implementation of organizational goals. Communication also helps in the formulation of plans to execute objectives that have been set by an organization. In addition, communication ensures successful and appropriate administration of human resource and other resources. Moreover, the function helps in directing, motivating and building an environment in which employees aspire to contribute positively (Barker, 2002).

There are two main categories of communication in organizations namely, systematic or formal communication and informal communication. Under formal communication, information is passed from one person to another through official channels that have been set up and approved by the management.

On the other hand, informal communication also called grapevine is the kind of communication based on personal contact. Informal communication does not adhere to specific procedures that are created and mandated by the management of an organization (Barker, 2002).

The main communication systems in an organization are oral and written systems. Oral communication systems normally involve passing of information through word of mouth which is the main code of communication. Typical channels of oral communication are face to face dialogue, phones and also videos.

Oral communication is known to provide immediate feedback as compared to other forms of communication. On the other hand, written communication is the conveyance of information through written materials like letters, memos and reports. Moreover, written communication systems have an advantage of being tangible and are much easier to confirm if the information received is true or false.

During the communication process in an organization, the flow of information is likely to develop into varied directions. The directions consist of upward communication, downward communication and lateral communication. Under upward communication, messages are conveyed from bottom to top levels in the organization. Information mostly flows from the subordinates to their superiors.

Furthermore, the information in upward communication involves factors like opinion of employees, attitude of employees and employee grievances. The main disadvantage of upward communication is that information is likely to be changed or distorted during the flow because of the different chains of command.

On the other hand, downward communication runs from superiors to subordinates in the organization. The communication is normally characterized by giving orders, knowledge of communication and widening of thoughts. This kind of communication takes a lot of time hence information can be lost or denied through the different chains of control. Moreover, it often leads to misunderstanding of directions hence a backward link has to be created in order to verify transfer of the right information (Rho, 2009).

Lateral form of communication also known as horizontal communication involves communication between people of the same level in an organization, for instance heads of departments. It is much quicker and effective for information to be conveyed laterally as compared to upward and downward communication because it lacks chains of control. However, lateral communication can be impaired through rivalry and overspecialization of job functions which eventually lead to conflicts and unwillingness to share information.

Conclusion of organizational communication

From the research, it is evident that communication is very important in any given organization hence should be held in high regard for the purpose of achieving overall organizational success. The management of every organization should put in place guidelines and procedures that ensure communication is carried out effectively. Proper communication helps in the coordination of different activities and improves the interpersonal relationship among the people working in an organization.

Due to diverse levels in an organization, it is difficult to choose one particular way of communication. Therefore, different ways of communication are used to ensure that communication is passed from one person to another in the most appropriate and timely manner. Every form of communication has their pros and cons hence a lot of patience and compromise is needed to ensure efficiency.
