Definition Essay: Love

Love is something that means very different things to different people. For some, love can be purely romantic, or even purely sexual. For others, real love is utterly unconditional and only truly exists between family members, or between people and a deity. And for some people, love is fluid, ever changing, and everywhere, and is felt for family, friends, partners, pets, and even inanimate objects, dead artists, and fictional characters. None of these people would be right or wrong, but one thing is certain: love is the most powerful force in the entire universe.

Between partners of any description, be they married or cohabiting, boyfriend and girlfriend, straight or gay, young or old, love is a relationship of mutual understanding and respect. Marriages and partnerships are often built on common ground that people find when they first meet; this can be as deep as sharing religious, philosophical or religious beliefs, or as simple as finding that you love the same film, book, or band.

This kind of love is often reliant on some kind of ‘chemistry’: that strange feeling that they give you in the pit of your stomach, and the feeling that nothing in the world is more important to you than enjoying the moment you’re in together. Some people feel that they experience love at first sight, where they know from the minute they set eyes on each other that they want to to be with that person, but something built on common interests and understanding must be stronger.

A parent’s love for a child can also often be described as love at first sight, but this is very strong because it comes from a natural instinct to protect our offspring. This love can often start before the baby is even born: you only have to look at the pride and excitement of many parents-to-be when they have their scans and feel their baby kick for the very first time. This kind of love is also felt by a child for its mother; it is unconditional for at least the first few years of life, and can also be felt between siblings.

It is the strength of this feeling that makes love the most powerful emotion that most of us will ever experience. People can do some dreadful things out of hate and fear, but love can push us to do much, much worse. And it is often love that can cause us to hate, whether it’s out of jealousy, or anger because our loved one has been hurt. Love, ultimately, is a sacrifice, whatever the relationship, and it must be the most powerful force in the universe because as human beings, we make true sacrifices for nothing less.

Love can be very hurtful, painful, and stressful sometimes and some people really need to know how to handle love. From my opinion love means to have the most positive feelings for someone. 2. Assignment: Attachment Style and Relationships Essay

There are seven different types of relationships that you can have; liking, infatuated love, romantic love, empty love, companionate love, fatuous love, and consummate love. You either have a high or low level of passion, intimacy, and commitment. Consummate love is basically the model relationship and has a high level of each component. This is the kind of relationship that people strive for and search for but is not always found. The liking relationship has a low level of passion and commitment but a high level of intimacy. Empty love has a low level of passion and intimacy, but a high level of commitment. With the empty relationship the couple has no romantic feeling, or feelings or closeness; they are just in a commitment relationship. Companion love is pretty common because the type of relationship has a low level of passion, with high levels of intimacy and commitment. This is seen in many marriages because the passion between them has begun to fade. As you can see each type of relationship has a different combination of components.

By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love, yet some don't believe in love at all.

Loves Vocabulary By Diane Ackerman Summary

Love is an expression of emotion. Love, it is said, can make you walk miles barefoot in the rain just to see the person you can't stop thinking about. Or, it can make you cross the street because the store "you love" is located there. Love is a versatile word — like what it describes. Love takes many forms, but the word typically describes an affection that is deep and emotional.

In comparison, the "n" word is defined as a contemptuous term used to refer to a person of any racial or ethnic origin regarded as contemptible, inferior, ignorant, etc. and a victim of prejudice similar to that suffered by blacks; a person who is economical, politically, or socially disenfranchised. These two words are in no way viewed, in the literary sense, on the same end of the spectrum yet in this particular article those involved see them as interchangeable. The feelings and emotions that accompany this term are

They are intimacy, commitment, and passion. Intimacy defines warmth and closeness of a relationship, commitment is the maintenance of a relationship despite difficulties, and passion is the intense feelings of the persons in the romantic relationship. A common romantic relationship in young adulthood is a marriage partner, which can be heterosexual or homosexual couples.

“The third ingredient is decision and commitment. Sternberg observed that when many people speak of love, they refer more to a conscious decision than to a feeling state. Emotions come and go, but commitments based on decisions remain constant unless they are deliberately revoked” (Baumeister & Bushman, 2014).

It is that deep, spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect. It dictates and pervades great works of art like those of Shakespeare and Michelangelo, and those two letters of mine, such as they are. It is in this century misunderstood, so much misunderstood that it may be described as the "Love that dare not speak its name," and on account of it I am placed where I am now. It is beautiful, it is fine, it is the noblest form of affection. There is nothing unnatural about it.

Affection Charles Lewis

Affection is the humblest and least discriminative love that Lewis portrays us. He represents it especially as the love from parents to offspring and vice versa. From this, we can already conclude that affection is truly important, as the love from parents to children is indispensable for their children survival. Moreover, storge is both a Need-love and a Gift-love depending on the point of view. What newborn can survive without the Gift-love his mother gives him, which at the same time is a Need-love from behalf of the mother.

Essay on The Meaning of Love

Love has many different meanings to different people. For a child, love is what he or she feels for his mommy and daddy. To teenage boy, love is what he should feel for his girlfriend of the moment, only because she says she loves him. But as we get older and "wiser," love becomes more and more confusing. Along with poets and philosophers, people have been trying to answer that age-old question for centuries: What is love?

You can love food from cake to roast beef, even those tiny individual candy bars that are never enough but just give you a taste of chocolate before you pop in the second one. One is able to love the feeling of carpet between toes or the tension in a hammocks string when you lay in that 'u' position swinging delightfully with each motion of your body. Essay about Love

Love is difficult to define, difficult to measure, and difficult to understand. Love is what great writers write about, great singers sing about, and great philosophers ponder. Love is a powerful emotion, for which there is no wrong definition, for it suits each and every person differently. Whether love is between family, friends, or lovers, it is an overwhelming emotion that can be experienced in many different ways.

Usually when you hear the word "definition" you think of a dictionary or encyclopedia. For example, a juvenile delinquent is an underage person convicted of crime or antisocial behavior. Likewise, a venture capitalist is a person who provides money for innovative projects.

Perhaps you have written a narrative essay about a personal experience in which you are called upon to classify and to analyze causes and effects. All of these patterns and more can be used in your paragraphs to clarify and extend the term you have chosen.

Example: Single Pattern

Sometimes a single pattern will be sufficient to extend the definition to achieve the effect you want for your audience. For example, let's say in an introductory sociology course, you are introducing the term "juvenile delinquent" to the class. You could use the "classify" pattern to clarify how broadly the term in used in this field:

  • Term: juvenile delinquent
  • Standard definition: an underage person who has committed a crime.
  • Pattern: Classify
  • Overall Point: To understand "juvenile delinquent" in this field, it's necessary to know the major types of delinquents.
  • The first type of delinquent is . . .
  • The second type of delinquent is . . .
  • The third type of delinquent is . . .

Example: Multi Pattern

Depending on the term, you may find that using several patterns is the best way to help shape your audience's understanding of a term. For example, let's consider the innocent sounding term "arbitration." Maybe you wish to make the point that sometimes legal terms are used to desensitize us from what is really taking place. Consider this example:

  • Term: Arbitration
  • Standard definition: legal process of resolving a dispute
  • Classify Pattern--list and define types of arbitration, including "forced arbitration"
  • Narration Pattern--The FAIR Act seeks to end the use of forced arbitration by U.S. employers
  • Cause/Effect pattern: Multiple examples of the victims of forced arbitration have pressured Congress to act through legislation

Your task in writing an extended definition is to add to the standard/notional definition in a way that will allow your audience to gain a deeper and more nuanced understanding of the term in a particular context. Whether you do this by adding facts, telling what a term does not include, or applying any of the many development patterns (classify, illustrate, cause/effect, compare/contrast, narration, description), matters not. Only the development of clear understanding between you and your audience should be the ultimate goal.

9 The Extended Definition Essay

The extended definition essay presents a detailed account of a single term or concept that is central to the content of the course for which the essay is written. What is cryptocurrency? What is a black hole? What is an algorithm? What is symbolism? What is deoxyribonucleic acid? What is National Socialism? Every subject has its own special vocabulary, and teachers will often assign an essay requiring students to present a detailed definition of a key term.

Read carefully this extended definition of feminism.

Example: On Feminism

The word “feminism” describes a popular movement for social justice, based on the premise that women have been and continue to be systemically oppressed by men who do not want to share the greater social, political, and economic power they have historically possessed. But the definition of feminism extends beyond raising the status of one gender; feminism recognizes that equal standards for all people regardless of gender will benefit society as a whole (Montgomery). In this respect, feminism can be interpreted as synonymous with egalitarianism.

Feminist scholars divide the movement into three phases or “Waves.”  First-wave feminism emerged in the early twentieth century in the form of a fight for the rights to vote, to own property, and to qualify for work in fields historically reserved for men. Second-wave feminism emerged in the 1960s as baby boomers entered university and demanded admission to programs that traditionally favoured men, such as engineering, medicine, and forestry, as well as “equal pay for work of equal value” (Montgomery).  Third-wave or post-feminism is the movement’s twenty-first century incarnation, devoted essentially to ending all forms of gender discrimination. Some even argue that a fourth wave has recently emerged, one that is concerned with the portrayal of women in social media.

While there is no clear consensus as to when first-wave feminism began, most accept that it emerged as industrialization progressed in the nineteenth century. Martha Lear coined the term in 1968, though the first wave focused on what we now consider basic issues of inequality (“What Was”). One of the earliest feminists was Mary Wollstonecraft, who mostly wrote in the late eighteenth century advocating that societies, and individuals specifically, should have rights that the state provides. Most other philosophers and writers of the time ignored women and Wollstonecraft was among the first to call for gender equality. After the American Civil War, Elizabeth Stanton and Susan Anthony rallied support for what they saw as one of the first great obstacles to greater freedom: the right to vote. Others, such as Barbara Leigh Smith, saw employment and education for women as critical areas to focus on.

Throughout the nineteenth century, Biblical interpretation of women’s role in the house and family prevented their ability to advance feminist ideals. To counteract the power of the church’s sex-based hierarchy, Stanton produced an influential work called The Woman’s Bible , in which she argued for equality using biblical references. This helped to provide religious justification, at least for some, for emerging feminism in the period. Furthermore, the National Woman Suffrage Association became a prominent organization, and in 1869, John Allen Campbell, the governor of Wyoming, became the first governor to grant women the right to vote (“What Was”). And when women replaced men in factories during the First World War, many realized that women did have equal skills to men. In Canada, women won the right to vote in most provinces during the war. In 1921, Agnes Macphail became the first woman in Canada elected to Parliament.

In the US, women had to wait a bit longer. Feminist organizations lobbied indefatigably and eventually convinced Congress that women should have the right to vote. Finally, in 1920, women won the right to vote across the United States. While the process itself was contentious, featuring hunger strikes and even mob violence, the gradual acceptance of women as voters can be considered the culminating success of first-wave feminism.

“The Progressive Era” took place in the 1930s; women’s social and political activism grew, and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt advocated for the appointment of women to positions within the administration. Her cause was further advanced during the Second World War when, again, women had to take over the work enlisted men were forced to abandon. After the war, however, North America saw a new emphasis on domesticity. When the soldiers returned, women were almost uniformly fired and forced back into their duties of domestic chores and child-raising (Bisignani). Second-wave feminism was a reaction to this post-war obsession with the ideal of the contented housewife and suburban domesticity, a lifestyle that often isolated women and severely limited their choices and opportunities.

Feminism’s second wave truly began in the early 1960s and focused not just on legal barriers to civil equality but also examined social inequalities. Second-wave feminists sought to change discriminatory policies on sexuality and sexual identity; marriage and child-rearing; workplace environment; reproductive rights; and violence against women. They formed local, regional, and federal government groups on behalf of women, resulting in human rights and women’s equality becoming a growing part of the North American political agenda. Finally, they created new, more positive images of women in both pop culture and the media to fight the negative stereotypes commonly in circulation, primarily that of the “happy housewife.”

The second wave of feminism included many landmark moments. In the 1960s, many government health agencies approved the oral contraceptive pill, and in 1963, the Equal Pay Act was passed in the US. In 1968, Coretta Scott King assumed leadership of the African-American civil rights movement and expanded the platform to include women’s rights. This led to Shirley Chisholm becoming the first African-American woman elected to Congress. In 1972, the passage of Title IX ensured equal funding for women’s opportunities in education, and the first women’s studies program in the US opened at San Diego State University. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the second wave came in 1973, when the Roe v. Wade case resulted in women’s access to safe and legal abortion (Bisignani).

Third-wave feminism began in the 1990s and still exists today (Demarco). There are many different outlets and angles of feminism now, but the most important values of the third wave include gender equality, identity, language, sex positivity, breaking the glass ceiling, body positivity, ending violence against women, fixing the media’s image of women, and environmentalism.

Third-wave feminists assert that there is no universal identity for women; women come from every religion, nationality, culture, and sexual preference. Different forms of media such as fashion magazines, newspapers, and television favour white, young, slender women, a fact which negatively impacts all women and results in body anxiety. To combat this anxiety, modern feminists have fought for body positivity, quashing the opinions of those who believe that overweight people are lazy and unhealthy. Feminists want society’s view of women to expand, to recognize, for example, that it is possible to be beautiful enough to be a model, but also smart enough to be an astronaut or a CEO.  But considering that, in 2017, only 18 out of 500 Fortune CEOs and 22 out of 197 global heads of state were women, it is clear that third-wave feminism has not yet removed the glass ceiling (Demarco).

The emerging fourth wavers speak in terms of “intersectionality,” whereby women’s oppression can only fully be understood in the context of marginalization of other groups, who are victims of racism, ageism, classism, and homophobia (Demarco). Among the third wave’s bequests is the importance of inclusion; in the fourth wave, the internet takes inclusion further by levelling hierarchies. The appeal of the fourth wave is that there is a place in it for everyone. The academic and theoretical apparatus are now well-honed and ready to support new broad-based activism in the home, in the workplace, on the streets, and online.

No one is sure how feminism will progress from here. The movement has always included many political, social and intellectual ideologies, each with its own tensions, points and counterpoints. But the fact that each wave has been chaotic, multi-valanced, and disconcerted is cause for optimism; it is a sign that the movement continues to thrive.

What is a Definition Essay?

Just as the name suggests, a definition essay defines and explains a term or a concept. Unlike a narrative essay, the purpose of writing this essay is only to inform the readers.

Writing this essay type can be deceivingly tricky. Some terms, concepts, and objects have concrete definitions when explained. In contrast others are solely based on the writer’s understanding and point of view.

A definition essay requires a writer to use different approaches when discussing a term. These approaches are the following:

  • Denotation - It is when you provide a literal or academic definition of the term.
  • Connotation - It is when the writer provides an implied meaning or definition of the term.
  • Enumeration - For this approach, a list is employed to define a term or a concept.
  • Analogy - It is a technique in which something is defined by implementing a comparison.
  • Negation - It is when you define a term by stating what it is not.

A single or combination of approaches can be used in the essay.

Definition Essay Types

There are several types of definition essays that you may be asked to write, depending on the purpose and scope of the assignment.

In this section, we will discuss some of the most common types of definition essays.

Descriptive Definition Essay

This type of essay provides a detailed description of a term or concept, emphasizing its key features and characteristics.

The goal of a descriptive definition essay is to help readers understand the term or concept in a more profound way.

Stipulative Definition Essay

In a stipulative definition essay, the writer provides a unique definition of a term or concept. This type of essay is often used in academic settings to define a term in a particular field of study.

The goal of a stipulative definition essay is to provide a precise and clear definition that is specific to the context of the essay.

Analytical Definition Essay

This compare and contrast essay type involves analyzing a term or concept in-depth. Breaking it down into its component parts, and examining how they relate to each other.

The goal of an analytical definition essay is to provide a more nuanced and detailed understanding of the term or concept being discussed.

Persuasive Definition Essay

A persuasive definition essay is an argumentative essay that aims to persuade readers to accept a particular definition of a term or concept.

The writer presents their argument for the definition and uses evidence and examples to support their position.

Explanatory Definition Essay

An explanatory definition essay is a type of expository essay . It aims to explain a complex term or concept in a way that is easy to understand for the reader.

The writer breaks down the term or concept into simpler parts and provides examples and analogies to help readers understand it better.

Extended Definition Essay

An extended definition essay goes beyond the definition of a word or concept and provides a more in-depth analysis and explanation.

The goal of an extended definition essay is to provide a comprehensive understanding of a term, concept, or idea. This includes its history, origins, and cultural significance.

How to Write a Definition Essay?

Writing a definition essay is simple if you know the correct procedure. This essay, like all the other formal pieces of documents, requires substantial planning and effective execution.

The following are the steps involved in writing a definition essay effectively:

Instead of choosing a term that has a concrete definition available, choose a word that is complicated . Complex expressions have abstract concepts that require a writer to explore deeper. Moreover, make sure that different people perceive the term selected differently.

Once you have a word to draft your definition essay for, read the dictionary. These academic definitions are important as you can use them to compare your understanding with the official concept.

Drafting a definition essay is about stating the dictionary meaning and your explanation of the concept. So the writer needs to have some information about the term.

In addition to this, when exploring the term, make sure to check the term’s origin. The history of the word can make you discuss it in a better way.

Coming up with an exciting title for your essay is important. The essay topic will be the first thing that your readers will witness, so it should be catchy.

Creatively draft an essay topic that reflects meaning. In addition to this, the usage of the term in the title should be correctly done. The readers should get an idea of what the essay is about and what to expect from the document.

Now that you have a topic in hand, it is time to gather some relevant information. A definition essay is more than a mere explanation of the term. It represents the writer’s perception of the chosen term and the topic.

So having only personal opinions will not be enough to defend your point. Deeply research and gather information by consulting credible sources.

The gathered information needs to be organized to be understandable. The raw data needs to be arranged to give a structure to the content.

6. Write the First Draft

Drafting each section correctly is a daunting task. Understanding what or what not to include in these sections requires a writer to choose wisely.

The start of your essay matters a lot. If it is on point and attractive, the readers will want to read the text. As the first part of the essay is the introduction , it is considered the first impression of your essay.

To write your definition essay introduction effectively, include the following information:

  • Start your essay with a catchy hook statement that is related to the topic and the term chosen.
  • State the generally known definition of the term. If the word chosen has multiple interpretations, select the most common one.
  • Provide background information precisely. Determine the origin of the term and other relevant information.
  • Shed light on the other unconventional concepts and definitions related to the term.
  • Decide on the side or stance you want to pick in your essay and develop a thesis statement .

After briefly introducing the topic, fully explain the concept in the body section . Provide all the details and evidence that will support the thesis statement. To draft this section professionally, add the following information:

  • A detailed explanation of the history of the term.
  • Analysis of the dictionary meaning and usage of the term.
  • A comparison and reflection of personal understanding and the researched data on the concept.

Once all the details are shared, give closure to your discussion. The last paragraph of the definition essay is the conclusion . The writer provides insight into the topic as a conclusion.

The concluding paragraphs include the following material:

  • Summary of the important points.
  • Restated thesis statement.
  • A final verdict on the topic.

7. Proofread and Edit

Although the writing process ends with the concluding paragraph, there is an additional step. It is important to proofread the essay once you are done writing. Proofread and revise your document a couple of times to make sure everything is perfect.

Before submitting your assignment, make edits, and fix all mistakes and errors.

-1To Know Love: an Extended Definition Essay Whether it’s an infliction of pain, an intense feeling of pleasure, or a source of immense hurt, the three vastly different reactions are common side effects of love. In fact, love has been known to cause an endless number of emotional possibilities. It is important to consider how love is able to manifest itself into the many aspects of our lives. For example, how is love able to leave us wallowing in a bed of guilt, fortitude, agony, denial, or cause an overwhelming blissful sensation? Or, in more extreme cases, how has its intense side effects been able to cause people to physically harm themselves? Never has a single word been known to both have been rooted in selfless and selfish acts, showing itself as warmth and kindness, or maliciousness, guile, hate, or abandonment. Yet, the single word, love, arguably has the most versatile meaning of any word known. The average person will agree that “love” has been overused so much so, that it’s original meaning has been diluted over the years, which has resulted in an inherent change from its intended purpose. For example, it often proceeds or has been associated with statements such as, “I’m sorry, will you forgive me ?” or “come on don’t you love me?” Love in the context of forgiveness is vastly different from its enabling context as used in the second statement. Which context coincides with its original meaning and which has been the result of evolutionary over usage? In fact, as this essay will discuss neither statement uses or associates “love” as its original definition intended. The rest of this essay attempts to refocus our modern day abuse of the word, love, and visit its original roots. Interestingly enough, the word, love, which theoretically is known as being “an

intense affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties; a strong feeling of attraction resulting from sexual desire; enthusiasm or fondness,” supersedes any dictionary definition (Oxford English Dictionary, “Love“). In fact, it would require pages upon pages of explanation to properly illustrate its true meaning. Originally, the first usages of love is organized into the following four categories: “Eros, the basis for the word erotic, meaning love that is desire, and usually associated with sexuality, Philial, the basis of love for the word family, meaning love based on a blood relationship or a group, Caritas, the basis of love for the ultimate meaning and destiny of other humans. Finally, the fourth category Agape, which covers “the basis of love for the universe, a love that transcends reason, and desires good not only for all humanity, but all living beings, and the earth itself” (www. chaliceuu. org, 2). These four classifications were originally developed and further identified by the Greeks over 2,000 years ago. As the usage of the word, love, progressed and became increasingly more common, its original definition evolved into its current state. Similar in the categorical classification that the Greeks originally used, I created five separate categories of my own. The first category centers on its most popular usage and interpretation. This category focuses on how fondness, acceptance, and affection define its meaning. The second category contrasts sharply from the first. Its focus is primarily on the harmful nature of its potential to cause abuse and/or self-inflicted pain. Love in relation to sex, or being of sexual nature comprises of my third category. The fourth category focuses on the usage of love in relation to indulging in things non-living things such as food. Lastly, the fifth category focuses on unconventional usages of love not associated with the four previous categories. As I have shown in the contemporary categorical definitions, the word love, and its meaning, has

evolved from its Greek roots to take on additional meanings. Because love’s connotations tend to focus on the positive aspects of its usage, it’s important to examine how love plays into the mindset of abusive individuals. For example, most abusive individuals use love to aid and justify their hurtful actions. The usage of love in this context reflects the nature of the abuser. As a result, “love” acts effectively as a weapon that hinders, defeats, and destroys the abuser’s target. The victim often becomes weak and desperate as he or she creates a false sense of what and how love is supposed to interact. Love in this context acts as chain or shackles preventing the victim from being able to escape his or her abuser. What befuddles most people is how the victim is able to continue taking abuse. Many psycho-therapists and psychologists suggest that the sordid high that one gets, while feeling intense pain is also the same feeling one gets while feeling “love. ” Based on this analysis it is worth asking the question, what is love’s main catalyst? Surely, the word, love, has not become slang for its grossly negative effects such as cutting. Cutting is basically a slang word for a destructive disorder where an individual self inflicts pain via use of sharp object like knives and razors. Inflicting pain creates a sense of feeling better or love. To Write Love On Her Arms or TWOHA, is an organization started as a result of the increasing numbers of individuals who self inflict damage in the form of cutting. Understanding, as this essay explained from a psychological or psychotherapists’ stance, it is easy to analyze the connotative nature of love in relation to its less formidable meanings or characteristics. For example, if an individual experiences the same sensation by cutting themselves as others experience when eating certain foods or engaging in sexual acts, then it is easy to see how an individual is able to commit self-inflicted acts of pain. However, love is not just an emotion triggered from pain as its close association with physical sexuality. An example of its use in relation to sex often occurs when nonfamily members state, “I love you,” which I argue often has sexual overtones. Often, we are sucked into the façade of being in so-called love, which more appropriately resembles

infatuation. Individuals often misconstrue the differences between the two as both evoke strong emotions. While love is not purely physical, it is a key component of the sexual nature occurring between two partners. This state, which differs from casual sexual relations, shares a unique emotional connection besides the actual physical act. As are result, most people intertwine love and sex as being one in the same. As used before, scientifically explained, the brain’s reaction to sex responds in a similar manner to other individuals who exhibit strong emotions when eating desired foods or drug abusers who have had their fix. As love transcends physical sexuality and abuse, its spectrum includes indulgence or love of food. Love of food operates very similar Much in the same manner that love commits individuals to commit self destructive acts or since sex, drugs, and food supposedly share the same pathways in the brain- food can be easily associated with love. Many of the contemporary contexts in which love is commonly used are superficial, debilitating, and overextended. Further inference suggests that the reason “love” extends to represent a host of different meanings has to do with the uniqueness of each individual’s intellectual nature. As we have examined, love can be twisted to justify abusing loved ones, tolerating abuse, overindulge and codependency resulting in love for food, or inflicting pain via cutting. The relationship between individuals and the mediums to convey love that has been exampled has an emotional bond as strong or greater as popular constructs of love based on sex or traditional relationships. As a result, the argument is easily made that the context of love in the wide spectrum of definitions that this essay has explored is

equally relevant. This relevancy is based on the importance of examining how different examples of love reveal similar characteristics.

Simply put, a definition is a statement of the meaning of a word or phrase. An extended definition goes beyond what can be found in a dictionary, offering an expanded analysis and illustration of a concept that might be abstract, controversial, unfamiliar, or frequently misunderstood. Take, for example, writings such as William James' "Pragmatic Theory of Truth" or John Berger's " The Meaning of Home ."

Approaching the Abstract

Abstract concepts, including many of the broad terms in the list that follows, need to be "brought to earth" with an example to relate what they mean to your reader and to get your point or opinion across. You could illustrate the concepts with anecdotes from your personal life or examples from the news or current events, or write an opinion piece. There's no single method for developing and organizing a paragraph or essay by extended definition. The 60 concepts listed here can be defined in various ways and from different points of view.

Brainstorming and Prewriting

Start with brainstorming your topic . If you work well with lists, write the word at the top of the paper and fill the rest of the page with all the things that the word makes you think of, feel, see, or even smell, without stopping. It's OK to go off on tangents, as you might find a surprising connection that could make a powerful, insightful, or even humorous essay. Alternatively, brainstorm by writing the word in the middle of your paper and connect other related words to it and each other.

As you develop your angle, think about the concept's background, features, characteristics, and parts. What is the concept's opposite? What are its effects on you or others? Something in your list or word map will spark a writing idea or theme to use to illustrate the abstract concept, and then it's off to the races. If you run into a dead end the first time, go back to your list and pick another idea. It's possible that your first draft turns out to be prewriting and leads to a better idea that can be developed further and can possibly even incorporate the prewriting exercise. Time spent writing is time spent exploring and is never wasted, as sometimes it takes a bit of pursuit to discover the perfect idea.

If seeing examples will help spark your essay, take a look at "Gifts," by Ralph Waldo Emerson, Gore Vidal's "Definition of Prettiness," or "A Definition of Pantomime," by Julian Barnes.

Love has many different meanings to many different people; it can be tossed aside like a dirty rag, unimportant and forgotten, or cherished and cared for like a priceless gemstone. To me, love is a connection between the hearts and minds of two people. It is a feeling of trust and wholeness; a feeling that in the other person’s eyes, you can do no wrong. • Where to get a definition essay without writing it

You have definitely learned some definitions at school and college or even had to give your own definition of some terms or things. You know that definitions are usually short and consist of one to three sentences. But now you’ve got a task to write the whole definition essay. Have no idea how to write more than three sentences and what are the definition essay parts? Do not worry! Read on to learn about the peculiarities of essay structure, check the topics, and see examples. Or pay someone to do my homework at a whole new level.

Definition essay , also referred to as extended definition essay, is the type of academic writing that presupposes giving definition of a particular notion, term, concept, or phenomenon. It is much longer and specific than a simple definition. Definition essay provides different meanings of the word, both denotative and connotative, explains peculiarities of its uses, and offers examples. It may define some specific things such as a car, door, bad as well as abstract things, such as love, success, freedom, happiness.

One word can have different meanings in different domains of life, which are sometime controversial. The purpose of a definition essay is not just to provide a short explanation of a notion, but to mention all the possible meanings and usages of a words and specify the difference between those meaning and usages.

When it comes to defining some abstract notions, such as love, home, or family, the extended definition essay may also include the meaning of that word to the author, which cannot be found in dictionaries. Our American dream essay can be a good example for this kind of writing. Pay attention to different writing tricks and implement them in your work.

Be sure, definition and definition essay are two different things. Definition essay is much more specific and wider notion than just a definition.

  • Definition  is a statement of a specific meaning of a word.
  • Extended definition essay  provides all the possible meanings of the word (denotative and connotative), explains difference between them and their usage, provides examples, and offers author’s understanding of that word.

Definition essay structure

Definition essay is a type of expository essay. Thus, it has a classical essay structure, which consists of 5 components: introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and conclusion.

A typical extended definition essay outline looks as follows:

  • Provide background information
  • Specify the term, notion, concept, etc. you will define in your essay
  • Thesis statement of a definition essay is a short definition of a term or notion you are going to discuss in your writing

Body paragraphs (at least three)

  • Provide different approaches to defining a meaning of a chosen word
  • Present only one approach per paragraph
  • Provide example for each definition
  • If the definitions have slight differences clearly define them and exemplify
  • Make sure to include a topic sentence in each paragraph

Conclusion of a definition essay

  • In the conclusion part summarize all the main points you have mentioned in your essay. Please do not just repeat or copy-paste, but analyze and synthesize.

There exist different approaches to defining a term. Here are the most common techniques:

  • Denotation - providing a dictionary definition
  • Connotation - mentioning implied meaning of a term
  • Enumeration - giving a list of all the possible meanings
  • Analogy or analysis - comparing and contrasting similar notions from the same class of a word you define
  • By function - defining the term by the functions it performs
  • By structure - defining the term by explaining how it is organized
  • Negation   - is  proving a definition of a term by explaining what it is not

Definition Essay: A Powerful Guide to Writing an Excellent Paper

A definition essay is a type of academic writing that explains what a term or a concept means.

What Is a Definition Essay?

What a definition essay is a piece of writing (see all essay types ) that explains what a term or a concept means. Some words have definite, concrete meanings, such as glass, book, or tree. Terms such as honesty, honor, or love are abstract and depend more on a person’s point of view.

A definition essay can be evaluated from the direct, or exact meaning and the point of the subjectivity of the person defining the term. The aim is not only to provide a dictionary definition but also elaborate on why the word is defined in such a manner. The approach depends on the subject, readers, and the essay’s purpose.

3 Steps to a Powerful Definition Essay

When you start writing a definition essay, follow 3 main steps.

Step 1: Tell readers what term is being defined.

Step 2: Present clear and basic information.

Step 3: Use facts, examples, or anecdotes that readers will understand.

Choosing Ideas for Writing a Definition Essay

Choosing the definition is a key step in writing a definition essay. You need to understand the term used for your definition paper and make sure it’s easy-to-understand by others. Read the dictionary, but don’t just copy the definition. Explain the term’s meaning briefly in your own words. Besides, it is important to limit your term before you start defining it. For example, you could write forever on such definition essay topics as “love”, “money”, “power”, or friendship. To limit it, you would write about either “romantic love,” “platonic love,” or “first love.” If you are assigned to write a definition essay here is a great list of definition essay topics:

Extract of sample "Extended definitions of love"

In most cultures all over the world, love is seen to be first and foremost directed to one’s family. The family is considered the primary unit of society where every individual starts to be exposed to life’s experiences. Love in the family begins with love between spouses as husbands and wives decide to leave their respective nuclear families to unite and form a new one. As parents, they accord love and unrelentless support to the children. Mothers are revealed to express unconditional love to their offsprings.

Fathers provide financial, physical and emotional support. Children return the love by just being there to provide happiness and assistance, as needed.  The power of love that surrounds family members transcends barriers of time, space and location and is therefore considered universal and continually existing and persisting since time immemorial up to today. Love for a divine and Supreme Being reigns differently according to cultural orientation. The religious beliefs, traditions, values and practices encompass teachings of love and equal treatment for the lives and existence of others.

In the Catholic religion, for instance, love for God is taught within the first four commandments, which were summed as: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (All About Truth, par. 15). It comes before oneself, one’s family, and above all else. Regular attendance to masses and observing the sacraments attest to the love.. Love for God is manifested through following the commandments and teachings. Learning more about God is initially introduced by parents and slowly reinforced through subjects of religion and Christian values from primary education until the secondary level.

Regular attendance to masses and observing the sacraments attest to the love and devotion expected of disciples to the Catholic faith. Love for Neighbors Concurrent with teachings of the faith and one the commandments of God are to love one’s neighbor as oneself. It is manifested as the Golden Rule (Teaching Values, 2009) or the ethics of reciprocity. Loving one’s neighbors require respect for human rights and their purpose for existence. However, a more admirable love for neighbors is exemplified by people such as Mother Teresa of Calcutta who showed love, compassion and offered her life and service to those in need.

Her Missionaries of Charity was an organization created to “to love and care for those persons nobody was prepared to look after. In 1965 the Society became an International Religious Family by a decree of Pope Paul VI” (The Nobel Foundation, par. 2). This love entails self-sacrifice and putting the needs of others above oneself. Mother Teresa was determined to seek for assistance in terms of providing for the physiological (food, clothing, shelter, medicines, health care) and spiritual love for the needy.

Love of this kind is exemplary and challenging as one finds the means and ways beyond one’s capabilities to ensure that the needs of others, deemed to be more relevant, are taken cared of. Love of this nature sometimes defies explanation but is rooted from the Divine love for God – unselfish, unconditional love directed to others

Love(Extended Definition Essay) 1 Pages 264 Words

Love is hard to explain because it is so versatile. Love is a deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness. To many people it has a different meaning. Each of its meanings has some sort of special effect on a person's own emotions. Both physically and mentally it can impact a person.              A lot of younger people seem to fall in love "at first sight." A chemical attraction occurs that draws them to that significant other; something about their appearance- their eyes, hair, amazing smile-gets their heart thumping. True-life, long-lasting love isn't created through small moments. A lasting relationship is built on knowing the other person and accepting their flaws along with more obvious good parts. Instant connections can lead to love if the time is taken to get to know the other person.              If a connection is established, then the spark has the potential to stay throughout their lives. Couples in true love stay in love. Even when they are elderly and aren't vivacious and youthful as when they first fell in love, they can still love each other as much. They just don't have the lust for each other they once had.              Everyone, once in his or her life, will fall in love. Someone will make another's dreams come true. They will have that ever-lasting feeling of not only friendship but of trust, hope and an accredited future. Just for this little thing that means so much called love.              ...

“Everybody at some point in time has felt love , be it for a person, pet, or even a non-living object. Love can be felt in different force, it may consume a person’s whole being, or maybe it is just a little crush. Some people can look for love in a whole lifetime while others may play around with it, that is to say, they may fall in and out of love on a regular basis. We as human, we can love many things, but we find that love, that exists between two people special. Love is always difficult to define because everyone has a different experience when it comes to love, that is to say, that, what one thinks as love, another may think is infatuation. For us to be able to understand the term love, we first need to grasp the two main types of love: romantic love and friendship love. Most people always define love based on the difference it has from friendship. Romantic love is not definitely the things you do with your romantic partner. Romantic love is always confused with infatuation. It is so all-consuming because romantic lovers are often on each other’s mind. Romantic love in most cases guides a person’s mind and sometimes can be extremely

Just write. Use your imagination. Let your thoughts run wild and write with a passion. Is this what defines an essay? This is the ability to freely write of someone’s desires and dreams…all through an essay. In her excerpt “Portrait of the Essay as a Warm Body”, Cynthia Ozick uses diction, irony, and metaphor to help distinguish an essay from an article.

What is love? Love has many definitions, which varies from one person to another. One may never know what true love is until it has been experienced. Morrie Love Theme Essay

Love is based on an individual's experiences and their feelings, that make them evolve a definition of love for themselves. People explain and define love on how they and others experience it. It is quite difficult to define love because it is such an abstract concept. People's misconceptions of love is when you feel a strong romantic affection for another person. For myself, love is an indescribable feeling that happens when I have strong feelings for a person romantically, or for a family member I am close with, and very close friends I have known for a long time.

Different Forms Of Love In A Streetcar Named Desire

Love is something that many people hope for in life, and is universal. Although love is a general term, there are several types of love, which are different in their own way. When most people define love in literature they often think of romance or a “Romeo and Juliet” type of love. Some may even think of an intimacy type of love, which can also be recognized as lust, or a sexual desire. Although these are most commonly known in literature, you have to go even deeper to know the other parts forms of love such as a friendship or family type of love, or a desirable love for something you want or admire. Love can often get complicated, or secret and hidden. For example, when you have a crush, you may have feelings and

What is an essay? Webster’s New Twentieth Century Dictionary (2nd ed.) defines an essay as “a short literary composition dealing with a single subject, usually from a personal point of view and without attempting completion.”

A Thin Line between Love and Hate

Love is not usually well defined. People often think that they are in love, but they cant explain it. There is a great dealing of confusion of the words love, and infatuation. Love may include romance, infatuation, affection and tenderness. But it could be love if one or more of the elements are not present. The definition of love varies from person to person. Love is essential element for all relationships. Much of what is written about love is either brief or mocking. Society in general is very cruel and heartless toward real love of any kind. Modern writing mocks marriages, husbands and wives, but condones adultery, and other obscene values. Real love is a mystery to most people. Most people never realize the true potential or value of love, nor do they learn to practice the art of love.

The Definition of Love

The Definition of Love Love by definition is an emotion explored in philosophy, religion, and literature, often as either romantic love, the fraternal love of others, or the love of God based on the definition found in The Encarta Encyclopedia. As I explored the definitions through the Internet, books, and articles, I noticed the definitions changed quite a bit, but yet had the same basic understanding. The definition I found in The Encarta Encyclopedia is probably the most simple and most basic. It refers to love in the whole aspect, which is Godly, fraternal, and romantic. All of which can only be defined by one word and that is love.

...he sweat and painstaking talent artists put into a piece of art. Likewise, when an onlooker sees a couple in love, how are they to distinguish whether it is true love or merely youthful, immature love? For this reason, only experienced lovers are capable of detecting true love in others. The potential beauty of love is held at the mercy of the two lovers. Thus the extent to which the love will mature depends on the unpredictable course the journey of love takes throughout its progressive stages. As with a painting, at it’s beginning, love has the potential to be something powerful and immortal. Easy love is happy, immature love. For love to be deep and meaningful, it must face challenges and overcome adversity. Love is the artwork of nature. Like the beautiful and serene calm after a vicious storm, love is often dangerous and uncomfortable before it can be lovely.

Meaning Of Love Essay

Many people have different perspectives when it comes to the topic of love. The word love has been tossed around by everybody and not very many people really understand the true meaning of love. There are some exceptions, but I think this is especially true for teenagers and young adults. I might be one of those people who do not fully understand the topic of love, but I hope to better understand the topic of love and its true meaning is this course.

What Love Means Essay

Love is one of those things that means different things to different people. If you would look the word love up in the dictionary, you would find this: “an intense feeling of deep affection.” For some people, love can be purely romantic or even just purely sexual. For others, real love can only exist between family members or between people and a god. For some people, it is felt for your partners, family, pets, or even inanimate objects. None of the people are right or wrong, but I do know one thing, love is very powerful. Love is overused in today's world, people say they love someone because of the way they look or their body. That isn't love. To me, love is the most spectacular, indescribable, deep euphoric

Variety: Puns and Anagrams

Michael Lieberman’s groovy puzzle makes us use our noodles.

By Caitlin Lovinger

PUNS AND ANAGRAMS — This is the most flexible type of variety puzzle, where pretty much anything goes, clue-wise, as long as an entry ultimately makes sense, like a surprise ending to a great joke. For me, this means there will always be one or two places where an answer is fully revealed by letters from crossing entries, but I still won’t catch onto why it works for a while, and I know that, even after the fact, I’d never be able to figure it out as a free-standing riddle. This might sound frustrating, but in a setting like today’s, Michael Lieberman’s first Puns and Anagrams puzzle of 2024, it’s amusing and entertaining, with lots of extended “aha” moments.

In order to get the punchlines for those jokes, solvers need to navigate a series of easier clues, or at least more formulaic examples. Today’s puzzle features several terrific homophonic clues, hidden words and some difficult charades; a cryptic cheat sheet helps with recognizing these types of wordplay. Here are some examples, as well as some tricky, category-defying entries:

1A. We start off with a homophone for a vital organ: For “____ attack (deer hunter’s concern),” the entry is HART, a male deer . How do you know it’s a homophone? You really don’t! I suppose you could get there with deduction, thinking of a word to make “____ attack” an apt phrase, but I had to solve 1-, 2-, 3- and 4D, filling each letter in, before I got the drift. Similar homophone clues are at 31A, 40A, 50A, 13D, 39D and 44D.

14A. This is another pun entry that I got a kick out of, but never would have come up with. “Wear out one’s welcome” solves to OVERHANG. I did think of “overstay” at one point, but that’s a standard answer, the kind that would work with this clue in a regular crossword, as “overstay” has no alternate meaning. OVERHANG, instead, is primarily defined as something entirely different , so it has the requisite twist for this kind of puzzle.

16A. I somehow found this pun entry instantly guessable, and I’m betting that I’m not alone. “Teravel by car” is DERIVE, or “d(e)rive,” which mimics “t(e)ravel.” I think this would have been harder if “Teravel” were an actual word and didn’t jump out so much.

19A. This is the only visual clue today: G SW G solves to SWINGS, or SW IN GS. It is cute and not terribly difficult to parse.

48A. “Drinks in a police escort” is a hidden-word clue with an indicator. That makes the type of clue easier to recognize — “in,” “within” or “covered by” often direct a solver to look for a term in the clue’s other letters — but the actual answer here still wasn’t obvious to me. It’s ICEES, nestled in “pol ice es cort.” Use the same technique to solve 54A, 55A, 62A and 8D.

63A. I was sidetracked by this small entry. For “Celebration starting on the 2nd,” I figured the answer’s first letter would be B, the second letter of the alphabet. Instead, think of a “Celebration” and remove its first letter, so the entry is “starting on the 2nd”; that gets us ARTY, from “party.”

9D, 15D. These are the two marquee entries in this puzzle, each 14 letters long. 9D is very endearing if you know your Kerouac, Ginsberg and Burroughs. “Drummer’s job” solves to BEAT GENERATION. At 15D, the clue is “adj.: Situated or passing above the normal elevation,” and the entry is HIGH DEFINITION. The clue, you see, is a DEFINITION of HIGH. These entries are quite clever, yet I can’t imagine guessing either — I had to solve each in reverse, letter by letter, and then ponder them for a moment before things clicked.

34D. “Canoeists heading from Pennsylvania to Maine” was also inscrutable, but this clue has an indicator that a cryptic puzzle might include — “heading.” The entry is MEDDLERS: Think of a word for “Canoeists,” or “paddlers,” and then change its “heading” from PA, for “Pennsylvania,” to ME, or “Maine.”
