REVIEW: Gorgeous Gothic Vampires Entertain in The Case Study of Vanitas

is the case study of vanitas popular

Season aired : Summer 2021

Number of episodes : 12

Genres : Fantasy, Drama

Thoughts : The Case Study of Vanitas sports many of Mochizuki-sensei’s signature elements — elevated character designs, a gothic atmosphere, and an overarching mystery waiting to be solved. It’s extraordinarily beautiful and highly enjoyable to watch. Despite all my reservations on the vampire’s return to entertainment, the anime won me over.

Noé seeks the Book of Vanitas — a legendary artifact that supposedly heals vampires from a terrifying disease. In vampire mythology, the disease began when the Blue Moon Vampire swore vengeance on the general vampire population for rejecting its existence and cursed them to live in fear of contracting it. Once contracted, vampires lose control of their bloodlust, leaving both humans and their own kind hunting the sickened vampires down. However, to Noé’s surprise, the Book of Vanitas is in the hands of a human who claims his own name is Vanitas. After Vanitas shows Noé the power behind the book, Noé decides to stick along with Vanitas in his journey to cure all vampires.

Taking place in a steampunk historical Paris, The Case Study of Vanitas went above and beyond for its art — in perfect parallel to what the city is famous for. I cannot praise the visuals and the character design enough. Mochizuki-sensei is known for her dramatic and drop-dead beautiful characters — antagonists, protagonists, and supporting characters alike — but the anime heightens this fact with its vibrant colors, dynamic clothes, and detailed animation of character expressions. Part of my enjoyment for this series comes straight from just staring at the screen to enjoy what I was seeing, story aside.

is the case study of vanitas popular

However, the series does suffer from some lackluster story arcs — especially in the beginning. Important characters often get introduced through interruptions, and, while that can be comical, it disrupts the flow when their sudden entrances force-pause entire conflicts. Jeanne and Luca are the earliest example of this issue. They interrupted Vanitas and Noé’s hunt for a corrupted vampire with their own demands unrelated to the issue at hand and quickly became the new conflict by attacking the protagonists. The paused mission would come back several episodes later, which makes the story feel disjointed.

Luckily, the later arcs don’t fall into that trap. New characters are introduced and contribute to the current problem at hand rather than throw off one, and their interactions are also more interwoven with the protagonists’ narrative arc. As a result, I found myself emotionally invested in the second half of the series versus the first, where I just watched out of entertainment.

is the case study of vanitas popular

The most surprising thing to me, however, is that I found the bloodsucking scenes quite charming. This is my first time watching an anime that gives an actual explanation as to why bloodsucking is so sexually charged — vampires inject an aphrodisiac into their victims when biting to not only prevent their victims from moving but also to enjoy getting bitten — and I find myself oddly appreciative of that added detail.

What is not surprising is the perfect music. Yuki Kaijura is the composer of the series, and her brilliance is on full display. The music extracts the exact emotions from the viewer no matter the scene. From the haunting, sharp sound of the flute to the sorrow of a vibrating violin, there was no end to the music that assailed the viewers from all directions. This is one of the reasons why I found myself so forgiving towards the first few arcs’ narrative mistakes. Even when rolling my eyes at the bad resolution of another conflict, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief when the fighting had stopped because of how high-strung the music made me feel.

is the case study of vanitas popular

Since the characters and their motivations and growth are heavily interwoven with the mystery behind the disease, we have not yet seen anyone’s development. Vanitas’s past was hinted at briefly in the last arc, and none of the characters have changed much because nobody really came any closer to understanding the truth behind the disease. Because of that, the voice actors also remained fairly static in their portrayal of the characters — though I found Inori Minase and Ai Kayano’s performances as Jeanne and Dominique respectively more electrifying than the pair of protagonists.

In the end, this first cour really is just a setup for the actual storm coming in the second cour . The twelve episodes certainly do their job in establishing the world, the characters, and the conflict. However, due to the mishaps of the first few arcs, this series was far more fun to watch than it was emotionally engaging. One can only hope that changes in the second cour.

English Dub Season Review: The Case Study of Vanitas Season One

Overview (Spoilers Below):

Long ago, a vampire named Vanitas was born under a blue moon and was thus called a curse-bearer. Legend tells that he wrote a grimoire called the Book of Vanitas and that its powers can be used on those vampires who are of the crimson moon. Fast-forward to the present day and a human named Vanitas has possession of the book. He partners up with a vampire called Noe, and the two of them work together to advance Vanitas’s agenda. From evading the church’s vampire hunting agents to falling in love, the two of them are up to something wild each week as they make their way through 19th century France.

Set in 19th century Paris, The Case Study of Vanitas tells the story of an eccentric man child called Vanitas and the vampires and humans he meets throughout his travels. It’s a trippy road trip through Paris, England, and otherworldly vampiric realms—and it’s also very sexy (if you’re into vampires of course). Whether it’s good or not is another story, and it’s a little hard to answer because it’s going to depend very much on your ability to overlook how annoying Vanitas is.

The basic plot is that Vanitas is a human who’s goal is to find the so-called curse bearing vampires who have been afflicted by the misfortune. He does this via a magical tome called the Book of Vanitas, which was written by a long-gone vampire also named Vanitas who was born under a blue moon. He meets up with a vampire named Noe, and the two of them form a kind of frenemy bond. From then on, it’s the two of them going on new adventures each week. The quality varies depending on the episode. The show does action fairly well, and some of the more fight-oriented scenes are fun to watch. The romantic arcs are much less well done, although I might be biased since I’m not a huge fan of vampiric romance, which at least according to this show, involves a lot of blood.

The anime is based on a manga by Jun Mochizuki. It’s been said that one the trademarks of the original manga was the tension-filled drip of information and backstory, but I don’t feel like the anime really did this justice. Instead of a slow build, the series seems to mostly ignore questions of logic and backstory—until it doesn’t, and then it force feeds you flashbacks for entire episodes. This makes it hard to keep the pace interesting, and I often found that I would lose what little excitement I was feeling because the show would suddenly take a detour, like when it abandons Vanitas and Noe at the party with Charlatan in favor a melodramatic tale from Noe’s past.

The production quality of the show is fine, but nothing special. Bones is the studio that worked on it, and they’ve made a lot of very well respected series in the past. Vanitas probably won’t go down in history as one of them. It doesn’t look bad, but it none of its visuals really appealed to me very much and I couldn’t really get a feel for the art direction of the show. Some of the character designs are fun, especially Ronaldo and Dr. Moreau, but those were the highlights for me. The English dub is serviceable, but some of the dialogue can sound stilted and off—although that might just be part of the show itself, since The Case Study of Vanitas is certainly one to lean into weirdness.

All in all, Vanitas isn’t really the kind of show that appeals to me. It takes its ingredients (vampires, 19th century Paris, romance) and kind of throws them around in hopes that something will be born out of the chaos. Chaotic shows are well and good, but usually there has to be at least one character to sort of anchor the plot, and none of the characters here really did that for me. Noe is presumably the one who we should be rooting for alongside Vanitas, but his blind loyalty and odd naivety toward Vanitas didn’t really endear him to me as our main character. About half of the character in the show suck blood, and I would have to say the show itself also sucks.

Case study definition

is the case study of vanitas popular

Case study, a term which some of you may know from the "Case Study of Vanitas" anime and manga, is a thorough examination of a particular subject, such as a person, group, location, occasion, establishment, phenomena, etc. They are most frequently utilized in research of business, medicine, education and social behaviour. There are a different types of case studies that researchers might use:

• Collective case studies

• Descriptive case studies

• Explanatory case studies

• Exploratory case studies

• Instrumental case studies

• Intrinsic case studies

Case studies are usually much more sophisticated and professional than regular essays and courseworks, as they require a lot of verified data, are research-oriented and not necessarily designed to be read by the general public.

How to write a case study?

It very much depends on the topic of your case study, as a medical case study and a coffee business case study have completely different sources, outlines, target demographics, etc. But just for this example, let's outline a coffee roaster case study. Firstly, it's likely going to be a problem-solving case study, like most in the business and economics field are. Here are some tips for these types of case studies:

• Your case scenario should be precisely defined in terms of your unique assessment criteria.

• Determine the primary issues by analyzing the scenario. Think about how they connect to the main ideas and theories in your piece.

• Find and investigate any theories or methods that might be relevant to your case.

• Keep your audience in mind. Exactly who are your stakeholder(s)? If writing a case study on coffee roasters, it's probably gonna be suppliers, landlords, investors, customers, etc.

• Indicate the best solution(s) and how they should be implemented. Make sure your suggestions are grounded in pertinent theories and useful resources, as well as being realistic, practical, and attainable.

• Carefully proofread your case study. Keep in mind these four principles when editing: clarity, honesty, reality and relevance.

Case Study Competition

Students developed a business strategy for a grocery chain.

April 16, 2024

Seven agribusiness and food industry management students recently brought home valuable experience and recognition from the National Grocers Association (NGA) Show.

Held at Caesar's Palace Forum in Las Vegas, the NGA Show is a premier event for the grocery industry, bringing together retailers, wholesalers, and a passionate student community that included students from Cornell, University of Findlay, St. Joseph’s University, Arizona State, Kansas State, Auburn, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Fresno State.

Students Justin Kipper, Carmen Diaz, Elizabeth Vargas, Ariadna Castro, Megan Ebner, Avalon Anderson, and Irvin Ayon were not just attendees; they were active participants at the show in several activities.

One of the activities was the Student Standout Awards, which tasked them with forming cross-university teams and evaluating hundreds of products and services showcased on the expansive NGA Show Expo Floor.

The floor included 350 companies eager to connect with industry stakeholders. From Center Store and Fresh Food innovations to cutting-edge technology solutions, the students had a front-row seat to the future of grocery retailing.

The cross-university teams each tackled a specific award category: Center Store, Fresh, Health & Wellness, Pharmacy, Operational Services, Sustainability in Store Design & Equipment, and Technology.

Armed with a set of insightful questions, they approached each booth, engaging with company representatives and learning how these products and services could empower independent grocers.

Through these insightful dialogues, the expo transformed into a real-world learning lab for the students, exposing them to the grocery landscapes and giving them invaluable industry knowledge while honing their critical thinking and communication skills.

Best Bagger Competition

Cal Poly Pomona students Castro, Vargas, and Diaz also assisted with the Best Bagger Competition, which puts the spotlight on a fundamental skill in the grocery industry – bagging – and on customer service and company pride.

Grocery store baggers from across the country battled it out for the coveted championship title and a grand prize of $10,000.

The students’ support ensured a smooth-running event and exemplified the collaborative spirit fostered by the agribusiness program.

Student Case Study

In the ever-evolving landscape of the grocery industry, maintaining a competitive edge requires not just adaptation but forward-thinking strategies that anticipate future trends.

This was the challenge the agribusiness management students embraced in the Student Case Study.

Their mission was clear: to revitalize Niemann Foods Inc. by transitioning its County Market stores into B-level stores, rebranded as "Niemann's Market."

Niemann Foods faced the dual challenge of executing a successful rebranding strategy to build customer loyalty while adapting to the changing dynamics of the grocery industry.

The team was comprised of Kipper, serving as the senior program manager, Anderson as head of marketing strategy, Ayon as senior community activities director, Diaz as visual design manager, with valuable contributions from Vargas, Castro, and Ebner.

Under the expert guidance of Lecturer Katie Horvath, a seasoned professional with 15 years of experience in the grocery and consumer packaged goods) retail sector, the student consultant team embarked on a journey to redefine the shopping experience at Niemann's Market

The key questions posed to the student team revolved around creating an integrated shopping experience, aligning the rebranding with future customer preferences—especially in the fresh category—and differentiating Niemann's Market in the coming decade.

The students' proposal focused on leveraging technology and community engagement to revolutionize the shopping experience at Niemann's Market. Their strategic plan included the implementation of Custom Shelf Talkers and new cost-saving Electronic Shelf Labels (ESL) Digital Shelf Tags.

These innovations aimed not only to enhance the in-store experience but also to achieve significant cost savings through labor reduction and efficiency in promotional activities.

Furthermore, the team devised a compelling marketing strategy titled "Look closer, find more at Niemann's," emphasizing the unique value proposition of the rebranded stores. By integrating these elements, the students projected a rate of investment of 73 percent or more, with substantial savings in labor and material costs, while also saving valuable time spent on price changes each week.

Gerry Kettler, Niemann’s director of consumer affairs, lauded the students' presentation, highlighting the impactful ideas they brought to the table.

"Your students rocked the presentation with their ideas! I cannot wait to work with these students," he remarked.

Although the team did not clinch the top prize, their innovative cost-saving initiative caught the attention of independent grocers across the United States, with seven grocers keen on implementing their strategies.

As these bright minds continue to make their mark on the industry, the experience gained from the Student Case Study serves as a foundation for their future endeavors. Their work with Niemann's Market is a testament to the transformative power of innovative thinking in maintaining a competitive edge in the dynamic grocery industry.

The collaboration between Cal Poly Pomona students and Niemann Foods, Inc. exemplifies the potential for academic institutions and industry leaders to work together in addressing real-world challenges.

The students' ability to apply their knowledge, creativity, and strategic thinking to a complex business scenario underscores the quality of education and training provided by agribusiness and food industry management program at the Huntley College of Agriculture.

Jennifer Howard-Grenville and Ujjwal Pandey

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

Hydrogen is often hyped as the “Swiss army knife” of the energy transition because of its potential versatility in decarbonising fossil fuel-intensive energy production and industries. Making use of that versatility, however, will require hydrogen producers and distributors to cut costs, manage technology risks, and obtain support from policymakers.

To cut carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen production must shift from its current reliance on fossil fuels. The most common method yields “grey hydrogen”, made from natural gas but without emissions capture. “Blue hydrogen,” which is also made from natural gas but with the associated carbon emissions captured and stored, is favourable.

But “green hydrogen” uses renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, to split water into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis. And, because there are no carbon emissions during production or combustion, green hydrogen can help to decarbonise energy generation as well as industry sectors — such as steel, chemicals and transport — that rely heavily on fossil fuels.

Ultimately, though, the promise of green hydrogen will hinge on how businesses and policymakers weigh several questions, trade-offs, and potential long-term consequences. We know from previous innovations that progress can be far from straightforward.

Offshore wind turbines

Wind power, for example, is a mature renewable energy technology and a key enabler in green hydrogen production, but it suffers vulnerabilities on several fronts. Even Denmark’s Ørsted — the world’s largest developer of offshore wind power and a beacon for renewable energy — recently said it was struggling to deliver new offshore wind projects profitably in the UK.

Generally, the challenge arises from interdependencies between macroeconomic conditions — such as energy costs and interest rates — and business decision-making around investments. In the case of Ørsted, it said the escalating costs of turbines, labour, and financing have exceeded the inflation-linked fixed price for electricity set by regulators.

Business leaders will also need to steer through uncertainties — such as market demand, technological risks, regulatory ambiguity, and investment risks — as they seek to incorporate green hydrogen.

Test yourself

This is the third in a series of monthly business school-style teaching case studies devoted to responsible-business dilemmas faced by organisations. Read the piece and FT articles suggested at the end before considering the questions raised.

About the authors: Jennifer Howard-Grenville is Diageo professor of organisation studies at Cambridge Judge Business School; Ujjwal Pandey is an MBA candidate at Cambridge Judge and a former consultant at McKinsey.

The series forms part of a wide-ranging collection of FT ‘instant teaching case studies ’ that explore business challenges.

Two factors could help business leaders gain more clarity.

The first factor will be where, and how quickly, costs fall and enable the necessary increase to large-scale production. For instance, the cost of the electrolysers needed to split water into hydrogen and oxygen remains high because levels of production are too low. These costs and slow progress in expanding the availability and affordability of renewable energy sources have made green hydrogen much more expensive than grey hydrogen, so far — currently, two to three times the cost.

The FT’s Lex column calculated last year that a net zero energy system would create global demand for hydrogen of 500mn tonnes, annually, by 2050 — which would require an investment of $20tn. However, only $29bn had been committed by potential investors, Lex noted, despite some 1,000 new projects being announced globally and estimated to require total investment of $320bn.

A worker in a cleanroom suit inspects a large flexible solar panel in a high-tech manufacturing setting, with the panel’s reflection visible on a shiny surface below

Solar power faced similar challenges a decade ago. Thanks to low-cost manufacturing in China and supportive government policies, the sector has grown and is, within a very few years , expected to surpass gas-fired power plant installed capacity, globally. Green hydrogen requires a similar concerted effort. With the right policies and technological improvements, the cost of green hydrogen could fall below the cost of grey hydrogen in the next decade, enabling widespread adoption of the former.

Countries around the world are introducing new and varied incentives to address this gap between the expected demand and supply of green hydrogen. In Canada, for instance, Belgium’s Tree Energy Solutions plans to build a $4bn plant in Quebec, to produce synthetic natural gas from green hydrogen and captured carbon, attracted partly by a C$17.7bn ($12.8bn) tax credit and the availability of hydropower.

Such moves sound like good news for champions of green hydrogen, but companies still need to manage the short-term risks from potential policy and energy price swings. The US Inflation Reduction Act, which offers tax credits of up to $3 per kilogramme for producing low-carbon hydrogen, has already brought in limits , and may not survive a change of government.

Against such a backdrop, how should companies such as Hystar — a Norwegian maker of electrolysers already looking to expand capacity from 50 megawatts to 4 gigawatts a year in Europe — decide where and when to open a North American production facility?

The second factor that will shape hydrogen’s future is how and where it is adopted across different industries. Will it be central to the energy sector, where it can be used to produce synthetic fuels, or to help store the energy generated by intermittent renewables, such as wind and solar? Or will it find its best use in hard-to-abate sectors — so-called because cutting their fossil fuel use, and their CO₂ emissions, is difficult — such as aviation and steelmaking?

Steel producers are already seeking to pivot to hydrogen, both as an energy source and to replace the use of coal in reducing iron ore. In a bold development in Sweden, H2 Green Steel says it plans to decarbonise by incorporating hydrogen in both these ways, targeting 2.5mn tonnes of green steel production annually .

Meanwhile, the global aviation industry is exploring the use of hydrogen to replace petroleum-based aviation fuels and in fuel cell technologies that transform hydrogen into electricity. In January 2023, for instance, Anglo-US start-up ZeroAvia conducted a successful test flight of a hydrogen fuel cell-powered aircraft.

A propeller-driven aircraft with the inscription ‘ZEROAVIA’ is seen ascending above a grassy airfield with buildings and trees in the background

The path to widespread adoption, and the transformation required for hydrogen’s range of potential applications, will rely heavily on who invests, where and how. Backers have to be willing to pay a higher initial price to secure and build a green hydrogen supply in the early phases of their investment.

It will also depend on how other technologies evolve. No industry is looking only to green hydrogen to achieve their decarbonisation aims. Other, more mature technologies — such as battery storage for renewable energy — may instead dominate, leaving green hydrogen to fulfil niche applications that can bear high costs.

As with any transition, there will be unintended consequences. Natural resources (sun, wind, hydropower) and other assets (storage, distribution, shipping) that support the green hydrogen economy are unevenly distributed around the globe. There will be new exporters — countries with abundant renewables in the form of sun, wind or hydropower, such as Australia or some African countries — and new importers, such as Germany, with existing industry that relies on hydrogen but has relatively low levels of renewable energy sourced domestically.

How will the associated social and environmental costs be borne, and how will the economic and development benefits be shared? Tackling climate change through decarbonisation is urgent and essential, but there are also trade-offs and long-term consequences to the choices made today.

Questions for discussion

Lex in depth: the staggering cost of a green hydrogen economy

How Germany’s steelmakers plan to go green

Hydrogen-electric aircraft start-up secures UK Infrastructure Bank backing

Aviation start-ups test potential of green hydrogen

Consider these questions:

Are the trajectories for cost/scale-up of other renewable energy technologies (eg solar, wind) applicable to green hydrogen? Are there features of the current economic, policy, and business landscape that point to certain directions for green hydrogen’s development and application?

Take the perspective of someone from a key industry that is part of, or will be affected by, the development of green hydrogen. How should you think about the technology and business opportunities and risks in the near term, and longer term? How might you retain flexibility while still participating in these key shifts?

Solving one problem often creates or obscures new ones. For example, many technologies that decarbonise (such as electric vehicles) have other impacts (such as heavy reliance on certain minerals and materials). How should those participating in the emerging green hydrogen economy anticipate, and address, potential environmental and social impacts? Can we learn from energy transitions of the past?

A popular YouTuber's negative video of Humane's AI Pin raises questions about critical reviews in the age of innovation

Insider Today

Hello there! If you're struggling to decide the foods worth buying organic, best-selling author Michael Pollan has some suggestions for the ones worth splurging on to avoid harmful chemicals .

In today's big story, we're looking at a critical tech review that caused a bit of a stir on social media .

What's on deck:

Markets: Goldman Sachs quiets the haters with a monster earnings report .

Tech: Leaked docs show one of Prime Video's biggest issues, forcing customers to abandon shows .

Business: The best bet in business these days? Targeting young men who like to gamble .

But first, the review is in!

If this was forwarded to you, sign up here.

The big story

Up for review.

"The Worst Product I've Ever Reviewed… For Now"

Marques Brownlee, the YouTuber better known as MKBHD, didn't mince words with the title of his review of Humane's AI Pin .

In a 25-minute video , Brownlee details all the issues he encountered using the AI device. (Spoiler alert: There were a lot.)

Brownlee's review aligns with other criticisms of the device . But not all of those came from someone with as much sway. His YouTube channel has more than 18 million subscribers.

One user on X pointed that out , calling the review "almost unethical" for "potentially killing someone else's nascent project" in a post reposted over 2,000 times.

Most of the internet disagreed, and a Humane exec even thanked Brownlee on X for the "fair and valid critiques."

But it highlights the power of Brownlee's reviews. Earlier this year, a negative video of Fisker's Ocean SUV by Brownlee also made waves on social media .

Critical reviews in the age of innovation raise some interesting questions.

To be clear, there was nothing wrong with Brownlee's review. Humane's AI Pin costs $700. Watering down his review to ease the blow would be a disservice to the millions of fans relying on his perspective before making such a significant purchase.

Too often, companies view potential customers as an extension of their research and development. They are happy to sell a product that is still a work in progress on the promise they'll fix it on the fly. ("Updates are coming!")

But in a world of instant gratification, it can be hard to appreciate that innovation takes time.

Even Apple can run into this conundrum. Take the Apple Vision Pro. Reviewers are impressed with the technology behind the much-anticipated gadget — but are still struggling to figure out what they can do with it . Maybe, over time, that will get sorted out. It's also worth remembering how cool tech can be, as Business Insider's Peter Kafka wrote following a bunch of trips in Waymo's software-powered taxis in San Francisco . Sure, robotaxis have their issues, Peter said, but they also elicit that "golly-gee-can-you-believe-it" sense.

As for Humane, America loves a comeback story. Just look at "Cyberpunk 2077." The highly anticipated video game had a disastrous launch in 2020 , but redeemed itself three years later, ultimately winning a major award .

Still, Humane shouldn't get a pass for releasing a product that didn't seem ready for primetime, according to the reviews.

And its issue could be bigger than glitchy tech. Humane's broader thesis about reducing screen time might not be as applicable. As BI's Katie Notopolous put it: " I love staring at my iPhone ."

2. Buy the dip, Wedbush says. Last week's drop among tech stocks shouldn't scare away investors , according to Wedbush. 3. OpenAI is plotting an expansion to NYC. Two people familiar with the plans told BI that the ChatGPT developer is looking to open a New York office next year.
