The website Resume Genius says you can "make a professional resume in 12 minutes." We tested it out and indeed had a solid first draft of an easy resume completed in about 10 minutes. Resume Genius takes you step-by-step through the process, prompting you with questions about your education and work experience to help you fill out the applicable sections. Resume Genius is particularly helpful because you can search for a job and see prewritten text for the description that you can add or edit. When finished, you can easily toggle between different templates to see what looks best for the final product. You also have the option to directly share your resume with Indeed or Resume Library. 

The site can also help you build cover letters and curriculum vitae. After you input all your information, you can choose different layout styles and colors. It's easy to move through, but you have to do it in order and fill in all the information before continuing. Resume Genius also offers examples of resumes, CVs and cover letters for specific jobs, as well as recommended jobs near you. You can download the resume you create for $3 (which starts a 14-day trial for Resume Genius Pro), or $8 (which kicks off a monthly subscription plan). However, if you fail to cancel your trial before the 14 days are up, you'll be billed $25 every four weeks ($95 annually), according to the site.

Indeed Resume Builder also offers optional professional advice for your new resume. After you download the resume you created, you'll get a prompt and can click Get Resume Help From a Real Person. You can add or delete any sections you like without needing to hit save every time you add in information, and you can see your resume update as you go. The autosave feature makes it easy to toggle quickly between the different sections as well. At the end, you'll have a basic resume ready to go. The app's interface doesn't offer as much guidance about how to write your resume or what types of information to include. If you need extra help, tap the information icon in the bottom left and choose the Resume Writing Guide. This will open up a crash course on resume writing in your mobile browser. It also includes a job search feature. 

The app collects payment via donations after you use the service -- you don’t have to pay if you don’t want to. The app connects to iCloud, and you can export your resume as a PDF to any location on your device(s). If you are happy with the service, you can choose the $6 "helped a bit" tier, a standard donation of $10, or the "really helped me" tier for $25. 

Resume Star 2 has a 4.8 out of 5 rating, and more than 1,800 ratings in the App Store . Modernizing your resume for executive IT leadership

CIO resume makeover: Recent trends in structure, presentation, and emphasis can ensure your resume is streamlined to emphasize your professional brand.

For IT leaders seeking a new position, condensing an extensive and storied employment history into a short, readable resume can be daunting. But by embracing modernized approaches to resume presentation, and eliminating outdated and redundant content from your CV, a streamlined resume that stands out can be readily achieved.

To give an example of this in practice, we paired a CIO with an eye on continuing their executive leadership career at a new company with Stephen Van Vreede, president, executive resume writer, and coach for ITtechExec.com, to help improve their resume and modernize the overall look and feel.

It may seem like window dressing, but familiarizing yourself with current resume style and format trends is crucial for a career move at the leadership level. And if it’s been a few years since you’ve evaluated your resume, it’s likely those standards have changed. In this resume makeover, Van Vreede modernizes the resume of a seasoned IT leader, who wishes to remain anonymous, updating the aesthetic while delivering a clear, strategic message to draw in recruiters and hiring managers.

A modern look to catch a hiring manager’s eye

When updating your resume, content shouldn’t be your only focus. In the past decade, it has become easier than ever to create aesthetically pleasing documents without having a graphic design degree, and it’s important to use these accessible design tools to your advantage.

In this resume makeover, Van Vreede noted that the candidate’s resume “came across as antiquated because a very old format was being used.” The candidate’s original resume was visually basic with black text on a white background, bulleted lists, and no visual elements to draw the eye across the page. This outdated style creates a dense document that is hard to read, making it more difficult for recruiters to quickly scan for relevant skills.

Formatting your resume doesn’t have to be intimidating — utilizing options available in Word is all it takes. VanVreede decided on a blue theme for the candidate’s resume, highlighting each section with complementary light and dark blue tones, while utilizing larger fonts for the candidate’s name and the various section headers.

Using color and fonts help break up the document, making it easier for the reader to take in each section and better focus on the information presented. Creating visual stop points also helps hiring managers and recruiters more readily find the information they are looking for without having to labor through the entire document. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for the first person reading your resume to quickly identify why they should consider you for the role.

Van Vreede also suggests making strategic use of simple font enhancements, such as bolded text and italics. For example, in updating the candidate’s resume, Van Vreede ensures each section has the most relevant and crucial information bolded, enabling recruiters and hiring managers to pick out the most important skills and accomplishments quickly and then go back after to read for more detail once they’re pulled in and interested in you as a candidate.

A strategic summary shift

An executive summary at the top of your resume has become a popular way to identify relevant skills and experience from the jump. But remember, each detail in this summary must convey your professional brand, so make every word count.

This section should signal to the reader that you are a strong candidate for the role, and entice them to delve further into your experience and background. Design this section for the job you want, not the job you have — and illustrate why you would be the ideal fit.

In this case, the candidate’s original executive summary was short and redundant in the context of the rest of the document, and the experience section “came across as a laundry list of duties,” positioning the candidate as an “IT manager focused on tactics instead of a CIO focused on strategy and organizational value,” Van Vreede says.

The original resume also included two brief sentences about the candidate’s general experience, noting that they have a “proven record of achievement in reducing costs, streamlining operations, stakeholder satisfaction, creating business strategies and how to best leverage technology.” While these are valuable experiences for the sought-after role, it’s better to provide substantive examples of how each accomplishment was achieved.               

Van Vreede addressed this in the revised resume by first shifting the executive summary message to “position the candidate as a technology and operations executive who helps drive growth, scale, and profitability into the business,” he says. To enforce this shift from “tactical to strategic ” leader, Van Vreede also expanded the summary to include information that would highlight the candidate’s “achievements and business impact statements,” he says.

In the revised document, Van Vreede included specific accomplishments such as “rebuilt IT and modernized technology stack, led strategic projects and change management programs, managed 501c3 IT business operations, and modernized higher education IT operations and technology ecosystem.” These are more clear directives that demonstrate the candidate’s competency as a CIO, emphasized in bold, with additional context for each point included after for anyone who wants to know more.

This not only helps create a more cohesive narrative for the resume, but also ensures it will stand out and be “more likely to be read on a quick first review,” says Van Vreede. You want to establish your professional brand right from the start, and lead with the most compelling information to hook the reader.

Brevity makes a difference

The candidate, who felt their original resume was “too long and detailed,” wanted an updated resume that better reflected their “current role as an executive leader” in a more succinct manner. Here, Van Vreede says that applying a “strategic content and messaging focus” throughout a resume is the key to streamlining decades of experience into a professional brand.

For instance, on the candidate’s original resume, each job included an extensive list of often repetitive or outdated information. Moreover, the candidate’s career history on the original resume went back to 1997, with multiple bullet points for each position. In the revised version, Van Vreede condensed the oldest work experiences to a list of job titles under the heading “Select Additional Experience.” In this section, he also highlighted a few key accomplishments, removing everything that was outdated. Under the “Professional Experience” section, Van Vreede included the candidate’s four most recent positions, with the most space devoted to highlighting their two most recent positions.

In making these choices, Van Vreede emphasized the candidate’s CIO career path. For example, including the candidate’s two positions as business operations manager in their Professional Experience section outlines how these two positions led to the candidate’s later positions as director of IT operations and technology and CIO, the descriptions of which include far more detail and bullet points because they’re the most relevant to the candidate’s sought-after role.

For the candidate’s experience as a business operations manager, Van Vreede focused on accomplishments such as “championed cloud enablement, elevated organizational culture, and drove revenue and profit attainment surpassing business objectives.” These help demonstrate how the candidate’s path to leadership began, in managerial roles where they began flexing their leadership and strategic skills. It makes it easy to see how the candidate eventually found their way to the C-suite, highlighting their earliest accomplishments in these relevant areas.

The final result

It’s common to struggle with understanding which accomplishments to highlight on your resume, but thanks to the resume makeover process, the candidate says that Van Vreede helped them see how they were underselling themselves.

Pacific Surfliner, Metrolink to Resume Full Passenger Service Starting Monday

After heavy storms in January caused rocks and debris to effectively bury train tracks in San Clemente, passenger rail service — including Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner out of San Diego — will resume on Monday, transportation officials announced Tuesday.

Emergency work on a 200-foot-long retaining wall to protect the tracks from additional falling debris at the site of the Jan. 24 landslide near the city-owned Mariposa Trail Pedestrian Bridge is expected to wrap up this week.

Amtrak began offering some limited passenger service on its Pacific Surfliner trains earlier this month, and some freight trains were able to through the affected section at night in recent weeks. However, full service on both Metrolink and Amtrak lines will resume Monday morning.

The railroad tracks in the San Clemente area were also closed last year due to mudslides and debris. The first was in April near the Casa Romantica Culture Center and Gardens, blocking the tracks for a month while repairs were completed.

Another mudslide occurred in the same general area on June 5, prompting another rail closure that lasted nearly six weeks.

Long-awaited odour report from Richibucto shellfish plant leaves critics baffled

With start of snow crab fishery looming, coastal shell expected to resume operations after 4-month break.

Residents of Richibucto have long struggled to describe the stench wafting over their community from a local shellfish-waste processing plant. 

Burnt wires mixed with rotting lobster summed it up for many. 

And for years, many worried what exactly they were breathing, said Maisie Rae McNaughton of the Kent Clean Act Action Committee. 

So when she found out that Coastal Shell Products did an "odour evaluation" last fall as part of the testing process for a new piece of equipment, she was eager to hear the results. 

But after reading the odour evaluation report, she has little confidence in it. 

McNaughton said she expected it to be a scientific evaluation of what was in the air, but instead, regular people took a sniff and recorded what they thought they smelled.

"I don't see the science behind it," said McNaughton. 

Part of approval from province

The testing was done to measure the impact of new odour-reducing technology installed by the company, which was a requirement for the approval to operate from the Department of Environment.

So Coastal Shell Products hired St. Croix Sensory, a Minnesota-based, odour-testing company with a laboratory in Ontario, to evaluate the smells coming from the plant. 

Laboratory director Thomas Vallarino said the company relies on the customer to collect and deliver air samples to the lab in Burlington, Ont. In this case, Coastal Shell Products provided 18 air samples.

According to the report, which was obtained by the Kent Clean Air Action Committee, the samples were collected on Oct. 1 and tested the next day. 

Vallarino said the samples were tested by a panel of eight people who meet industry standards. 

"So these are normal folks who have a trained sense of smell," he said.

The company's website says testing is done in a "specialized room designed to provide an odour-free environment." Panellists have to be non-smokers, not use scented products or cosmetics and not interfere with odour testing because of a "lack of hygiene." 

They also can't "eat, chew gum, or drink (other than water) within 30 minutes of the start of an evaluation session." 

The collected samples are then delivered to the person's nose by a "sniff port" that's designed to deliver the sample at a "uniform face velocity" that allows the person to "easily sniff from the port without the sample being diluted by ambient air."

Among other things, the person is asked to provide a descriptor for each smell from a list that includes words that include decay, sulfur, animal, burnt and spice. 

Eight people rating 18 samples allows for 144 answers. Only four of the 18 samples detected "sea" or "fish" — and in all four of those cases, it was only by one person out of eight. That was the exact same number of people who said they smelled floral or fruit.

The most common descriptors used were "chemical" and "plastics." 

The evaluators were also asked to rate the smell on a scale of "pleasantness," with –10 being the stinkiest, zero being neutral and 10 being the most pleasant. The average of the 18 samples were between –1.9 and –5. 

Value of testing questioned

McNaughton said the report "just seems completely skewed and I don't see the science behind it."

She also questions it because she remembers the smell on the day the samples were taken. 

On Oct. 1, McNaughton said she spoke to an Environment Department official parked outside the Coastal Shell plant who explained that air samples were being collected. 

McNaughton said she immediately protested the value of such a test.

"And I said to her flat out, 'Do you see how there is no smell right now? There is no smell.' And she said that, you know, we weren't in the line of fire." 

McNaughton calls the report "deeply flawed" and says the "whole thing to me just makes me scratch my head."

Operations set to resume

So with the start of the snow crab fishery expected soon, Coastal Shell is expected to resume operations after a roughly four-month reprieve for Richibucto residents. 

McNaughton said she envies people who greet spring's arrival with a fond look forward. 

For her and others, it only brings dread. 

"While the rest of the province — and the rest of the country really — gets to look forward to warmer days and say, 'Ah, summer is coming, spring is around the corner,' our community just looks and goes, 'Oh, here we go again.' 

"And that's wrong. I don't care how you slice it, that is so wrong. We should be able to breathe clean air. We should be able to play with our kids outside." 

McNaughton has tried to meet with government officials, but said she's been turned down. 

"The season hasn't even started yet and it feels like the current government has just completely turned their back on our community already."

The group is also in a holding pattern after trying to get a court injunction against Coastal Shell . In December, the company argued that because it produces fertilizer, it is an agricultural operation and therefore its operations can't be blocked in court. It argued the residents' complaints should have gone to the provincial Farm Practices Review Board instead.

The judge said that since she was unable to determine whether Coastal Shell Products is an agricultural operation, she agreed with the company that residents need to file a complaint with the provincial board. 

Residents did file an application with the board and were told they would have to wait 90 days for a response. That, said McNaughton, is April 17. 

"The Farm Practices Review Board received an application related to what you are asking about," confirmed Nick Brown, a spokesperson for the Agricultural Department, in an email.

"The application is currently under review. The department is unable to provide comment until the review process is finalized."

The Environment Department confirmed Friday that Coastal Shell is free to resume operations as of March 31, albeit with restricted hours. The approval to operate is in effect until Aug. 31, 2024.

In an email, department spokesperson Clarissa Andersen said the plant cannot operate between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. 

"Department staff will continue to monitor odours within the community and ensure that the facility is taking the necessary steps to reduce the frequency and severity of odours," wrote Andersen. 

"There have not been any odour complaints from the school since the start of the school year. The company continues to work at installing odour reducing technologies."

Omer Gaudet, a co-owner of Coastal Shell Products, could not be reached on his cell phone and has not responded to a voicemail message left on Thursday.

MADISON, Wis. – The Madison Police Department will continue to use a third-party service for emergency detention transports to Winnebago Mental Health Facility.

The department tested out this option during a pilot program last summer. After a program review, Common Council approval and a competitive selection process, services resumed on Friday.

“An emergency detention transport is time-consuming. It took two officers out of our community for several hours,” said MPD Captain Shannon Blackamore.

“We saw a lot of benefits of using a transport service. We are happy things were finalized before our busy summer months.”

The department will continue to work with REDI Transports, a transportation company out of Green Bay. 

“This program helps more than our department. If a person is experiencing a mental health crisis, a two-hour-plus drive in police custody could fuel their crisis,” said MPD Chief Shon Barnes.

Madison officers will remain at a local hospital until a patient is medically cleared for transport. Protective custody will then be transferred to REDI during the trip and picked up by Winnebago upon patient arrival.

The department was able to secure $100,000 in the City budget to implement this program.

“Mental health challenges impact those of all ages, from all walks of life. Programs like this allow us to better serve people in their time of crisis,” said Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway.

The department’s contract with REDI Transports lasts until the city's funding runs out.
