Maverick director Puri Jagan, took the responsibility of showcasing mega hero Varun Tej in a complete mass avatar. The result is Loafer which has hit the screens today. Let’s see whether Varun manages to showcase his all round skills or not.

The story of the film is quite simple. An arrogant and irresponsible father(Posani Krishna Murali) separates from his wife(Revathi) and brings his son Raja(Varu Tej) away from her .

Raja grows up to become a Loafer like his dad and believes that he is a motherless child. As time passes by, Raja falls in love with Mouni(Disha Patani) who is facing a huge threat from her father(Mukesh Rishi). Raja then decides to free Mouni and right when is about to do so, he comes to know that his mom is still alive and is directly related to Mouni and her problems.

How will Raja confront his mother ? How is his mother related to Disha ? and How will Raja solve all these problems ? That forms the rest of the story.

Plus Points:-

Loafer will surely be a turning point in Varun’s career. It rightly proves that Varun can do an out and out mass role and impress everyone in songs and fights. The lanky hero will definitely be a huge star in the coming days and has been showcased in a superb way. Varun’s stature, screen presence and emotional performance has been tapped excellently by Puri.

Yet another major asset of the film is Posani Krishna Murali. The seasoned actor has done his role supremely well and evokes superb laughs as a shrewd father. It is a tailor made role for him and Posani’s chemistry with Varun Tej is quite good. Disha Patani makes a confident debut and looks good on screen.

First half and interval bang are quite good and move at a swift pace. All the emotional scenes between Revathi and Varun have come out extremely well. Being a seasoned actress she is, Revathi was brilliant in her performance during the second half.

Minus Points:-

Story wise, once again there is nothing new. After the interval, the film gets quite predictable and you exactly know what will happen by the end. After the post interval part, the film drifts apart and some unnecessary scenes come in to the picture.

Climax also looks a bit forced and is also dragged out with too much melodrama. Certain logics go missing in the film as the mother son relation could have been revealed during pre-climax to make the film even more believable.

Music of the film is a huge let down as the songs do not register at all. Brahmanandam’s entry and his episode have been unnecessary added and looks logicless.

Technical Aspects:-

Production values are quite good. The Jodhpur visuals look fresh and have been shot in a grand scale. Varun Tej has been styled in a superb way and looks apt for his character. Dialogues by Puri are good and so was the editing. Screenplay is pretty good and holds for most part of the first half.

However, after a point in the second half, Puri looses out on ideas and introduces some unnecessary characters. But credit should go to him completely for showcasing Varun in a superb way and extracting wonderful performance from the young star.

Overall, Loafer is a film which will do wonders for Varun Tej’s confidence and career. The lanky hero steals the show in a mass avatar and impresses big time. But a predictable story line, hurried up climax and below average music spoil the mood of the film. Finally, do not expect anything out of the box and only give this film a shot for a typical Puri narration, mother sentiment and Varun’s all round performance.

LOAFER MOVIE REVIEW

In today’s times, a film director on an average takes a year or two to direct one film irrespective of the enormity of the project. But here we have Puri Jagannadh delivering his third directorial of the year, Loafer. Has he given his best? Read through and get to know. To start off, the story of the film looks flat. A guy, who is separated from his mother by a heartless small time thief, who happens to be his father, wants to make good terms with his mother and also win back the love of his life. The story is all interconnected topped with all the usual masala ingredients. An outdated storyline which might have worked wonders had it been made 20 years back. One of the major plus point of the film is Varun Tej; he plays a role that is quite different from the ones he has been seen in the past. Varun turns into a ‘pakka’ action hero and he looks like a real deal. That is probably the biggest takeaway from Loafer. He deserves a better script and an improved narration to unleash his full potential. From the outset, the film looks like a very hurried project. The overall output of the film looks extremely artificial. Be it the set design or the costume, everything seem so unreal which makes Loafer hard to watch. One of the south Indian beauty queens of 80’s, Revathi, plays Varun’s mother. The entire story revolves around hero’s mother (Revathi) and hero’s love interest (Disha Patani). The heroine Disha has a meaty role to play in the first half, but the focus shifts to Revathi completely in the second. Disha sizzles in the song sequences but her expression in some of the scenes were factitious and don’t do justice to her character. Posani Krishna Murali who plays the father of Varun, comes in as a savior. He evokes laughter time in and again. He is just brilliant. The songs are a major setback. None of the songs leave an impact and they also hinder the pace to a large extent.

Loafer Review

Loafer Review, What’s Behind: The typical Puri Jagannath directorial starring Varun Tej in lead with debutant Disha Patani as heroine and Posani, Revathy in other leads, ‘Loafer’ has released today in theaters. As ‘Kanche’ bought a much needed recognition for Varun, this happens to be his first commercial outing. Loafer Story: Movie begins straightly with breakup of Lakshmi (Revathy) and Murali (Posani), as they both fight for only child Raja. One night Murali escapes with Raja to Jodhpur and here Raja grows as Loafer (Varun Tej) involved in petty crimes. Raja believes in the notion of his mother died with jaundice. While escaping from cruel family members (Mukesh Rishi and others), beautiful girl Mouni (Disha Patani) lands in Jodhpur just to fall in love with our Loafer. As Mouni-Raja romantic track goes on, here comes twist revealing Mouni’s aunt as Lakshmi and Raja is left shocked seeing his mother alive. How Raja goes back to his mother? How Raja clears the problems around Mouni? 

Loafer Artists and Technicians: Very rarely do we see Puri Jagannath playing comically with emotion filled sentimental relations between mother-son and father-son. ‘Loafer’ story and script is strongly centered on mother-son bonding while those trademark Puri heroism traits are also maintained intact. However, screenplay was left very feeble with openness in narration bringing lot of lagged dryness and everything runs on quite predictable. Puri clearly stumbled in direction as he was hurried to wrap up the project which merely killed the pace in circumstances and was not in sync with common audience general way of thinking. Puri is a hard hitting writer and many of these lines penned on Posani, Varun were loudly entertaining. PG Vinda camera work is a regular orderly arrangement of blocks and scenes in a definite Puri pattern. Except Jodhpur, much of the locations and camera work resembled the work in ‘Temper.’ Editing by SR Sekkhar was jerky in many occasions as one could not correlate the happening of story in Jodhpur or some area in Coastal AP, a confusing factor. Sunil Kashyap scored couple of wonderful tunes Suvvi Suvvalamma and Jiya Jale. His BGM also has run of the mill Puri loudness. Production wise, C Kalyan clothed the product in a very tight budget with limited locations in a narrow field.

On to performances, Varun Tej is too good as a street thug with casual dressing style. His body stature, dialogue rendering is competent taking in Puri’s heroic philosophy into brain and body. In drama and sentiment portions, Varun did a commendable job and so is his hard work continued into action part. Disha Patani is looks wise quite average. She hasn’t got any meatier portion to perform expect on songs and romance. Chemistry between Varun-Disha is also a bit poor. Revathy sensed like over-reactive operating beyond her natural flair. Posani got a lengthy role and his dramatization of simple episodes into impact creating stuff is just an awesome job. He is the fundamental fun provider for whole film. Mukesh Rishi, Charan Deep callous villainy is insensitively dealt. Ali as Spider Babu failed to evoke laughs. Ramya as Gavvala Rani is tantalizing. Sapthagiri, Dhanraj, Sandy, Uttej and others were just fine. 

Loafer Rating Analysis: This one is nothing different from Puri’s everyday work up or to be little strict, indicated the sliding professionalism in him. The note-perfect writing skills in Puri are getting wasted with his ruthless direction. None can point a drawback in his characterization drawings. Apparently, it’s the directionless treatment and purposeless narration gradually killed the interest. Once Varun-Revathy got exposed face to face, what was the necessity and reason Varun is forced back from opening his identity before mother? To cover this in screenplay, Puri might have introduced a rural setup, Mukesh Rishi acts and lastly Ali, Brahmanandam mining sub plots connected to main. 

Into the first half, ‘Loafer’ had an impressive take-off with Posani timing everything in centre of bat. As Varun grows up and meets heroine Disha, there is nothing much happening with plot. Then Mukesh Rishi’s family establishment is cockamamie. Only by the time Varun and Revathy are in centre amidst an interest generation, interval card is ready. 

Puri’s expertise in handling even simple plots with exquisite honesty isn’t really noticed in ‘Loafer.’ Agreed that there are few positives in mother-son sentiment but Puri presented them in a very simple way. Emotional elements always pay decent at Telugu Box Office but to what extent, Puri is right in this way has to be adjudged by himself. Coming to Varun Tej, if he is eyeing on mass characterization, he could have tried some other script rather than this one for sure.   

All in all, Cinejosh rates ‘Loafer’ with 2.25 stars feeling bad to see Puri working on an uninteresting, goalless and rotten plot. Commercially, ‘Loafer’ might pay because production standards also stood quite deplorable.

What's it about!

Raja (Varun Tej) and his father Murali (Posani) do chori, cheating and kidnap. They reside in Jodhpur. Murali tells Raja that his wife died long back but she is alive and is leading life as a teacher far from their place. One day, Raja steals the suitcase of Mouni aka Parijatam (Disha) who lands in Jodhpur fleeing away from her father. This leads to some playfulness between Mouni and Raja and they eventually fall in love. Mouni landed in Jodhpur as father and brothers are forcing her to get married to a mining businessman whose wife eloped with some guy. She only trusts her aunt Lakshmi, who also comes to Jodhpur to rescue her niece and here Raja recognizes that Lakshmi is his mother. What forms next is the rest of the movie.

Every director has his/her own signature style. That signature style is hard to achieve and having it should be considered as a great achievement. Apart from achieving this, over the years prolific director Puri Jagannadh has also created a template of his own for storytelling which has become quite predictable. Leaving aside some minor changes to the core story that he writes, he has been telling them in this template off late. Though he hasn't made a sentiment movie since Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi , Loafer also treads the same formula that he has created. One difference is, this one has some good sentiment scenes between Varun Tej and Revathy.

Puri Jagannadh sets off the movie in interesting manner by establishing what the story is all about in the very beginning. The first half, though quite engaging, is more or same of Ek Niranjan. The real drama and the difference is seen only in the second half. Although few sequences in the second half are too good, the movie drags on beyond a point. Also there is hardly any surprise element left after the interval. The film goes on predictable way and the climax is even more clichéd.

The film happens one time in Jodhpur, next it happens in Jalgaon, then it moves to some other place (Goa?). We never get the origins of the lead actors - are they from Hyderabad or some part in Andhra Pradesh? Why they go to Jodhpur specifically and later proceed to Jalgaon in Maharashtra. The reason given for the murder of heroine's mother also defies the logic.

Stressing more on the mother-son sentiment, Puri sets up flimsy backdrop to the other proceedings. To be fair to the movie, the main theme of the story and sentiment scenes between Revathy and Varun have come out superbly. That is the good part of the movie. Also there are his trademark dialogues that have quite worked out well. Revathy, the great performer she is, has also elevated dull moments with her presence and performance.

After playing an idealistic person in his debut Mukunda and soldier in Kanche, Varun Tej has done a mass character. He has proved that he can be good at these kind of roles too. Disha Pathani has good looks though she has not much to do in the film. Great actress Revathy comes up with another good performance. The characterization of Posani is nice but whenever he speaks we feel as if our ears are close to a loudspeaker. Rest of the cast doesn't make much impact. Although Ali generates some laughs, Bramhanandam is relegated to one un-funny scene.

Technically the film is rich with competent music by Sunil Kashyap. Of all his songs, the sentiment song stands out. P G Vinda has captured the beautiful locales of Jodhpur quite pleasingly and his work throughout the movie is quite impressive. Action fights by Vijay have become quite repetitive. Art work is neat. So is editing.

As writer and director Puri Jagannadh has shown his mark in some scenes. Some of the dialogues are superb but on the whole he has not shown much novelty in treatment of the movie or story.

Bottom-line: Loafer is a melodramatic movie in Puri's style. A mother-son action drama with nothing much new to offer. Other than some good sentiment sequences in the second half, it runs in predictable manner.

Loafer Movie Review And Rating: A Show Reel For Varun Tej

Puri Jagannadh is here again to treat you with his third offering for the year, Loafer , while Varun Tej is venturing out to test the waters as a mass hero. Read the review to know if the duo has succeeded in delivering a promising film.

Loafer Story:

The story revolves around a mother ( Revathi ) and a son (Varun Tej), who gets separated because of a greedy and selfish father ( Posani ) . Due to a poor upbringing, hero grows up to be a loafer, just like his dad, thinking his mother is dead. What happens when he finds out that his mother is alive and know the reality of his father? Will Revathi accept her son, who is now almost like her venal husband? This forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

Varun Tej though was a little amateur in dances, he excelled in emotional scenes and his great ease in delivering Puri mark one-liners is a surprise. Loafer makes it a show reel for the actor to set up himself as the commercial hero in the industry. Disha Patni makes an impressive début and looked gorgeous throughout the film. Revathi stands out in a Puri mark characterization while Posani felt loud. Saptagiri, Ali and other notable comedians are wasted.

Technical Aspects:

Like all the recent Puri Jagannadh films, Loafer also backs up a major complaint about its poor production values. However, cinematographer P G Vinda appears to have given his best in making the frames colorful. Puri Jagannadh once again proved that he is second to none when designing out of the box characters and penning catchy one-liners. Though the dosage of punch lines is less relatively, unexpected zingers here and there keeps you glued. Background music in some of the key scenes and 'Suvvi Suvvalamma' song by Sunil Kashyap will haunt you. On the down side, unwanted stress on comedy scenes, a couple of uninteresting songs and slow-paced first half and loud histrionics of the actors makes you feel stressful.

We can say it is a 'operation success, patient dead' kind of a product since Varun Tej managed to score well, while Puri Jagannadh disappoints you big time by going for a rush and delivering a poor quality output. READ MORE IN THE SLIDES BELOW.

The film is loud entirely and if you could connect with the sentiment scenes in the second half, you are saved. But if you are a person that cannot handle melodrama, then you are gone for a toss.

Introduction

The movie starts off on an emotional note with an argument between Revathi and Posani. Hero will be introduced in Jodhpur followed by a song. Movie's run time is of 139 minutes.

Disha Patni makes a decent debut as Paarijatham. She oozes glamour and can act well too, though she felt little raw with her look to the camera and bad lip sync.

Romantic Song

Varun and Disha's love track was a bit off the beat and the romantic scenes between the lead pair were conceived well. Jiya Jale song raises the temperature.

Average First Half

With a good interval, Loafer makes it to an average and passable first half. You will surely miss heavy dose of Puri mark dialogues.

Police Station Scene

Second half starts on a serious note, where Varun forces Posani to reveal the fact behind his mother's death. The police station scene that is followed stands out.

Suvvi Suvvalamma

The mother sentiment song worked out big time and Varun Tej's matured performance is a shocker.

Loafer makes it a decent watch for people, who like Puri mark films despite poor production values, loud and bold characters.

Movie review.

director Puri Jagannadh has also created a template of his own for storytelling which has become quite predictable. Leaving aside some minor changes to the core story that he writes, he has been telling them in this template off late. Though he hasn't made a sentiment movie since Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi, Loafer also treads the same formula that he has created. First half and interval bang are quite good and move at a swift pace. All the emotional scenes between Revathi and Varun have come out extremely well. Being a seasoned actress she is, Revathi was brilliant in her performance during the second half. (more)

Senti'mental' Drama!

With Amma Nanna O Tamil Ammayi, Puri Jagannadh has proved that he could make perfect sentiment dramas too. The film remained one of his best movies. Looks like he has tried to repeat the same magic but he has run out of ideas. He is just repeating all the tricks he has already showed us in many movies. (more)

Sentimental Loafer

Varun Tej dons a new avatar with this film, he looks dashing in some scenes, although it can't be said that he improvises upon Puri's visualization with his talent. He looks more than convincing in dramatic scenes, reminding one of his 'Kanche' avatar. (more)

Ajay Bhupathi's collaboration with "RX 100" actress Payal Rajput, as well as the creation of an intriguing trailer and aggressive promotions, made "Mangalavaaram" stand out.

Let's see if Ajay Bhupathi and Payal Rajput have replicated the 'shocking value' of their first film with this.

Story: The story takes place in a village in Andhra Pradesh in the 1990s. The villagers are shocked to see graffiti on the wall stating that a man and another woman from the village had an illicit affair and that everyone in the village should forgive them. The villagers soon learn that the aforementioned woman and man have been discovered dead in the fields.

In her investigation, a police officer (Nandita Swetha) concludes that it is a homicide case.

These deaths occurred on a Tuesday. The following Tuesday, similar graffiti appears, and another couple dies. While the villagers prepare for the next Tuesday, a doctor in their village claims to have seen the devil of the deceased girl Shailu (Payal Rajput).

Who exactly is Shailu? What is her connection to these murders?

Artistes’ Performances: Payal Rajput should be commended for taking on this role. Her character is not only difficult to portray, but it is also hard for many heroines to agree to play such a role. She has done justice to it.

Nandita Swetha does her role well as a cop. Krishna Chaitanya, who plays the village landlord, and Divya Pillai, who plays his wife, both have prominent roles and play them well. Ajmal Amir makes a brief cameo.

Priyadarshi takes on a role that is completely new to him. Ravindra Vijay is quite convincing as a good-hearted doctor.

Ajay Ghosh provides some comic relief.

Technical Excellence: 'Kantara' fame B Ajaneesh Loknath's excellent background score elevates the film. In fact, his background music is more arresting than many scenes in many places. He is the film's main asset.

The cinematography and editing are also excellent. Dialogues are alright. Production design is adequate.

Drawback: Over dramatic Too many genre elements

Analysis "Mangalavaaram," like Ajay Bhupathi's first film "RX 100," features a female protagonist who is not your typical Indian heroine. In this film, Ajay Bhupathi took it a step further by making his heroine suffer from a disorder, which no other Indian actress had dared to do so before. This is unique. 

The director also throws in two more surprises: a previously unpublicised actor and the negative side of an unexpected character. The second half of the film is jam-packed with all these surprises.

Ajay Bhupathi has not only kept the first half of the film short, but he has also avoided introducing the film's heroine Payal Rajput entirely. She arrives right on time for the intermission. He used the first hour to set the stage for the main story. 

The main drama happens in the last 30 or 40 minutes. 

"Mangalavaaram" appears to be both a daring attempt and an unconvincing effort because, while some twists and turns are quite good, many others appear forced.

First and foremost, the film depicts Payal Rajput as a victim of a disorder. However, before revealing information about her disorder, Payal is presented in such a way that she lacks character. When her disorder is revealed, the audience feels sympathy for her. 

To add more twists to the story, the director introduces another unexpected actor, whose character is really interesting and draws us in. But in the final moments, he pulls up another twist about a character, the main villain, which is interesting but unconvicing. 

What works in the film is Ajay Bhupathi’s attempt in creating a mood about the village’s dark secrets. But to keep our interest until the last forty minutes of the story, he attempts to present the film partly as a horror thriller, partly as an emotional drama, and also as a revenge drama. Thus, it becomes overstuffed.

'Kantara' music director Ajaneesh emerges as the film's main strength and Ajay Bhupathi deserves praise for restraint in displaying the "key" scenes involving Payal's character.

Overall, “Mangalavaaram” is neither a supernatural thriller nor a titillating love story like “RX100” but it has certain elements that are completely different from the regular movies. Terrific background score, some twists and turns have worked in its favour but the strength of the film lies entirely in the last 30 minutes.

Bottom line: Out of the box
