PhD studies

About third-cycle studies.

A doctoral degree is the highest formal education available. A Swedish doctoral degree forms a total of 240 ECTS credits, equalling four years of full-time study.

Third-cycle studies consist of both course work and of research work. The aim of the research work is to produce a doctoral thesis, that is defended at a public seminar. While following the doctoral programme, the doctoral student normally teaches at undergraduate level.

Doctoral students are normally employed at the university under a doctoral position. It is also possible to finance the studies in other ways, such as by an external employer who agrees to let the employee follow doctoral studies.

Subjects for third-cycle studies

  • General Linguistics
  • The Theory and Practice of Teaching and Learning English
  • English Literature
  • English Lanauge and Linguistics
  • Neurolinguistics
  • Scandinavian Languages
  • Modern Greek Studies
  • Press Studies

University and student nation scholarships

Scholarships for current Lund University students

Every semester, current Lund University students are invited to apply for University and nation scholarships. The autumn application period is in September and the spring application period is in February.

The University scholarships are distributed according to educational credentials from Lund University. They are awarded to Bachelor's and Master's students.

The nation scholarships are awarded by the nations to their members. They can be awarded to Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral students.

Current scholarships and application period

Current Lund University students can apply for University and nation scholarships twice a year, in February and September.

The results of the spring application period are now available in the application system. Scholarship payments will start in week 18.

The next application period will open in September 2024.

Please note that we only accept applications submitted during the application period.

Log in to the scholarship application system (new tab)

How to apply for a University or nation scholarship

The University and nation scholarships are a collection of several different scholarships. However, you only need to make one application that will then be matched with the scholarships you are eligible for.

Applications are made through the application system.

How scholarship recipients are selected

Applicants are ranked according to their

  • field of studies
  • pace of study.

Only credits from Lund University are taken into account. As your Lund University credits are registered in Ladok, to which we have access, you do not need to submit academic transcripts. Please check with your department that all of your credits have been entered into Ladok.

Make sure that the personal identity number you indicate in the application system matches that in Ladok.

Log in to Ladok to view your personal details

Eligibility criteria

Note that you are most likely to get a University scholarship when you are in your 5–8th semester at Lund University. In order to get a scholarship, you often need to have studied at Lund University at least two semesters.

To be eligible for a nation scholarship, you need to be a nation member.

Also bear in mind that most of the circa 250 scholarships are only open to Swedish students because of their setup (for example, connections to a Swedish family name or city etc). However, there are some scholarships that are open to international students currently studying at Lund University.

Supporting documents

Some of the University and student nation scholarships give priority to, for example,

  • students who are members of a particular nation
  • students who are born in Lund, or
  • students who are studying a particular subject.

In some cases, you might need to provide supporting documents to demonstrate that you fulfil certain criteria. If so, you will find information about this in the application system.

Otherwise, you do not need to submit any supporting documents.

Decisions and payment

Decisions for the spring semester are usually announced in April and decisions for the autumn semester in December. Please note that no notifications will be sent out via email. The results will be available in the application system.

Payment will be made to the account you specified in your application. If you have not specified an account number, we will reach out to you if you have been awarded a scholarship.

Previously awarded scholarships

In spring 2024 there were 1,224 applicants, of whom 244 were awarded a scholarship. The amounts varied from SEK 1,000 to SEK 56,600 (with a mean value of SEK 8,500). The total amount distributed was SEK 2,316,800.

In autumn 2023 there were 970 applicants, of whom 259 were awarded a scholarship. The amounts varied from SEK 1,000 to SEK 32,200 (with a mean value of SEK 7,600). The total amount distributed was SEK 2,130,399.

PhD Admission and Funding

Thanks for your interest in pursuing a PhD in Sustainability Science at LUCSUS. Here we answer some commonly asked questions.

How do I find current PhD vacancies at LUCSUS?

Find current vacancies at LUCSUS on our website

All PhD positions are also announced through the Lund University website:  Vacancies at Lund University

How does funding a PhD at LUCSUS work?

Pursuing a PhD at LUCSUS requires funding for the PhD student. PhD students are considered employees in Sweden, so this funding requirement includes covering salary for the PhD student, as well as required social benefits (e.g., employer contributions to pension and health care systems), and University overhead (paying for the use of LUCSUS premises, administrative staff, etc).

Funding for PhDs at LUCSUS is generally done in one of two ways. These positions are always openly announced and competitively selected based on qualifications for the stated job requirements.

  • Funding is provided by a large institutional grant, e.g., to LUCSUS or another department or center. This was the case with the LUCID Program (finished in 2018) and is the case for the Lund University Agenda 2030 research school (recruitment has closed, first students to start September 2019).
  • Funding is provided directly by competitively allocated research project money, generally won by the person who will be the PhD’s main supervisor. Funding may come from a variety of sources, particularly Swedish research agencies such as Formas or the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). This is the case with many of the current PhD students at LUCSUS. Applications are generally due in April, with decisions reached in November, and the positions starting sometime the following year.

There is also a possibility for self-financed PhD studies. More information about independently financed PhDs on our website

What if there is no currently advertised PhD position in my area of interest?

It is always possible to directly contact a LUCSUS staff member who is qualified to serve as a PhD supervisor whose research is closely aligned with your interests, to explore possibilities to develop research projects or funding proposals together, or ask them if they have or anticipate having funding available for a project of mutual interest. Note that PhD supervisors must be a permanent employee, e.g., a lektor/assistant Professor may be an assistant PhD supervisor, and a docent/Associate Professor or full Professor may be a main PhD supervisor.

If you contact a potential supervisor directly, it is important to first familiarize yourself with their work, and follow best practices when contacting them. Here are some tips to do so, from an  ecologist blog by Dr Jacquelyn Gill , and a blog Kimberly Nicholas wrote several years ago .

Do I need to speak Swedish to work at LUCSUS?

English is the working language of LUCSUS. Unless otherwise stated for a specific position, Swedish knowledge is not required (although you are encouraged to learn Swedish while you are here!).

Postgraduate research studies

The Faculty of Medicine at Lund University offers a stimulating environment for PhD students, with research that ranges over a broad field from experimental research to clinical research, closely involving patients. Doctoral students at this faculty are offered many opportunities for cooperation and interesting, stimulating meetings and scientific debates, in a highly internationally oriented research and study environment. A characteristic of our PhD student programme is that we are constantly working to maintain the high quality of our study programme.

Our Faculty of Medicine encompasses about 1000 graduate students, we admit about 130 new graduate students every year. A PhD-trajectory at our faculty is a 4-year (full time) programme, consisting of courses and research in a dedicated research area. Two thirds of our doctoral students are part time doctoral students, who combine their (often clinical) research while also continuing their clinical work.

Dr. Craig A. Ford, Jr., assistant professor of theology and religious studies at St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin, will join Dominican University as next year’s Lund Gill Chair in the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences.

The announcement was made by Dean of the Rosary College of Arts and Sciences Chad Rohman.

Since 2006, the Lund-Gill Chair has been selected annually to teach a course that addresses themes and issues that are at the heart of liberal arts and sciences. The position is named for former Dominican University President Sr. Candida Lund, OP, and former English professor Sr. Cyrille Gill, OP.

As Lund Gill Chair, Ford will teach an honors theology course on the liberative theologies of sex, gender and race within the Roman Catholic tradition during the spring 2025 semester, he said.

“In coming to Dominican, my hope is to show how truly wide the Catholic imagination can be when we think about some of today's most controversial issues,” Ford said. “More importantly, I hope to learn from the students how their own identities and experiences meaningfully participate in widening that imagination as well.”

At St. Norbert, Ford teaches courses in Christian ethics, race, gender and sexuality, and ecclesiology, and serves as co-director for the school’s peace and justice interdisciplinary minor.

Ford also teaches courses in Black theology at the Institute for Black Catholic Studies at Xavier University in Louisiana, the country’s only Catholic historically Black college.

A scholar and activist, Ford leads workshops on issues of racial, sexual and gender justice, working with Catholic parishes, colleges, universities and professional organizations.

In 2022, Ford was the recipient of the  Catherine Mowry LaCunga Award  from the Catholic Theological Society of America, the largest professional society of theologians in the world. He also been recognized by St. Nobert College with three distinguished awards.
