Application/Admissions:

How will i know if my transcript is received.

Our program receives any uploaded transcript submitted in your ApplyWeb application. We will use the uploaded transcript for application review. Please be aware that Wolverine Access will show the uploaded transcript as “not received”.  This is because Wolverine Access only indicates the official transcripts received by the Rackham Graduate School. You do not need to send the official transcript until directed to do so by the Rackham Graduate School.

Do you admit during Winter or Spring/Summer Terms?

We only admit students for Fall term. The application opens in September and the deadline is in December for admission the following Fall.

Do you accept transfer students?

We accept applications from graduate students in other programs at other universities, but the application process is the same. We do not evaluate what courses may or may not transfer prior to a student being admitted.

I was awarded external funding, or plan to support myself. Will you conditionally admit me since I do not require department funding?

We do not conditionally admit students who do not require department funding.

Should I apply for the MS or PhD?

It is recommended to apply for the PhD program since it is generally fully funded as a Graduate Student Instructorship.  The MS program is completely self-funded.  TA positions (GSI) are reserved for our PhD students.

I would like to apply to both a Master’s and PhD program; do I need to submit two separate applications?

If you would like to be considered for both the Master's and PhD program, apply only to the PhD program and mention in your personal statement that you would also like to be considered for the Master's program. Please be aware that Master’s students do not typically receive funding.

How do I know when my application is complete?

Initial review of most applications begins  after  the application deadline.  We manually review each application to ensure it is complete and will contact you if anything is missing.

What if I am missing something?

As we go through our review process after the deadline, we will notify you if you are missing something.

What are my chances of getting in?

We are unable to comment on the chances of a student being admitted to any of our programs at any stage before or during the admissions process.

What can I do to ensure I will be admitted into a program, or to increase my chances?

Before a decision is made on an application we can never guarantee a student will be admitted, regardless of what qualifications they have. This is due to the fact that each year the cohort of applicants varies greatly. We are unable to advise prospective students on how to make their applications more competitive for our programs. Students seeking advice should review the basic qualifications for the program they are interested in, and speak with an advisor at their current university on how to satisfy these qualifications.

When will you make a decision on my application?

Our Admissions committee makes decisions as they review applications.  As soon as they have made a decision on your application you will be notified by email.  The review process continues through April, and all decisions are made no later than April 15th.

Are the GRE General and Math Subject Test Scores required?

GRE General Test scores are no longer included in the admission process in accordance with a  policy of the Rackham Graduate School .

GRE Mathematics Subject Test scores are strictly optional. However, if an applicant chooses so, they may submit them as a combined pdf file with their transcript or personal statement.

If I am currently attending a University where the language of instruction is English and I WILL receive a degree from this University (B.S., M.S., Ph.D.) do I need to take the TOEFL exam?

Please visit Rackham's website for information regarding the TOEFL requirement  here .

How old can my TOEFL exam be?

Your exam is valid for 2 years.  It must be less than 2 years old before the application deadline date.

My TOEFL score is an 83 or lower, may I still apply?

For those who are required to take the TOEFL, we cannot review your application unless you have scored an 84 or higher- there are no exceptions to this rule. You are allowed to retake the TOEFL to try and get a higher score. As long as the exam has not expired, we will use the highest score you submit.

General Requirements:

What is the mathematical background of the typical phd admit.

Students admitted to the Math PhD program have a background roughly equivalent to U of M honors mathematics undergraduates. A detailed list of requirements for a bachelor’s in honors mathematics can be found  here .  Students interested in the AIM PhD program can find admission requirements here .

What are the minimum academic credentials required from international applicants to your Ph.D. programs?

The exact description can be found on the Rackham Graduate School site  here  . Note that for applicants from the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) we require the completion of a Bachelor’s (Honours) degree. For applicants from India, Rackham requires a Master's degree in all fields except engineering and technology. The Math program will, however, review applications from students enrolled in 3-year Mathematics programs at CMI (Chennai) and ISI (Kolkata/Bangalore). On a case by case basis, admission may be granted.

Financial Aid:

Do i need to apply for financial aid separately.

All applicants are considered for departmental financial aid automatically. Applicants are welcome to pursue external sources of funding.

How many of your students do you support?

Unless a student is self-supporting, our Ph.D. students are generally supported by either Graduate Student Instructorships, Research Assistants or fellowships for five years. Master's students generally do not receive support from the department.

AIM or Applied Math:

I am interested in doing applied mathematics. should i apply to the aim program.

Applied Math is part of our Mathematics PhD and Mathematics MS programs.  Those interested in doing Applied Math AND an Interdisciplinary Field outside of Mathematics should apply to an AIM program.

I know that I want to apply to the AIM program but do I need to know what my interdisciplinary field is before I apply?

No, many people have ideas of what they want to do and you should certainly list those in your statement, but we do not expect everyone to know exactly what they want to do.

Actuarial Science:

I want to apply to the actuarial science program. which program do i apply to on the application.

The Actuarial Science program is part of our Mathematics Master's program, so you should apply to that particular program.  It is NOT part of the AIM MS program.

Do you have an Actuarial Science Ph.D. program?

No, only a Master’s program.

The mathematics education doctoral program admits students with a variety of backgrounds. Some students will have equally strong backgrounds in education and mathematics. Others may have more extensive prior preparation in one of these two disciplines. Admissions decisions will be made by an Admissions Committee composed of members of the Mathematics Education Faculty Group.

Candidates should have:

  • the equivalent of an undergraduate major in mathematics, OR
  • satisfactory completion of coursework in mathematics appropriate to the applicant’s program of study and approved by the Admissions Committee, with the expectation of completing additional mathematics study if necessary.

In the latter case, the guidance committee will help the candidate to design a program that includes appropriate coursework in mathematics. Applicants with deficiencies in academic preparation may be admitted provisionally. These collateral courses will not count toward the degree. In addition, K-12 teaching experience is strongly encouraged, but not required.

A student who shows promise for success at doctoral study but who needs additional background to be eligible for admission to the Ph.D. program will be provided with specific conditions to be met before admission. Upon successful completion of these requirements, the student may re-apply.

Admission to the master's in mathematics education degree program is for students currently in good standing in a PhD program at MSU.

How to Apply

To be considered for teaching and research assistantships and for a variety of possible university or college fellowships, it is very important for applicants to submit application material on time. The MSU Application form for admission the following fall opens August 1st the year before. All application materials should be submitted by December 1st for the following academic year.

Applications for Fall 2024 are OPEN through December 1st.

or if there are issues with the uploading of content online, it can be sent electronically via email to Freda Cruél .

Please complete the items below for your application package. A list of required application items is given first, followed by detailed information for each.

Application Checklist (Materials due by December 1 for full funding consideration)

1. university application.

2. Letters of Recommendation (3 required)

3. Writing Sample

4. Statement of Professional Goals/Academic Statement

5. Personal Statement

6. Current Curriculum Vitae

7. Transcripts

8. English Language Proficiency, such as TOEFL Scores (International Applicants)

Here is some detailed information on each item for the application packet:

Go to the website: https://grad.msu.edu/apply for the Graduate Applicant and general information from The Graduate School at MSU. To create an account to start a new application or log in to continue an application, visit:  https://explore.msu.edu/apply/.

Follow the Graduate Application link (for both domestic and international applicants) to begin your application to the Mathematics Education Doctoral Program . The application fee (payable in U.S. dollars drawn on a U.S. bank) is $65 for domestic students and $75 for international students. Note that international applicants also need to complete a Financial Proof statement/ Affidavit of Support if they will not be on an assistantship and/or if they will bring dependents. International applicants for whom English is a second language will need to provide  Proof of English proficiency :  See https://grad.msu.edu/internationalapplicants.

Once you have applied, you can use your Applicant ID and password to log in to your personalized online student portal at https://explore.msu.edu/apply/ . You can upload your application materials, as well as register your recommenders, using this online gradportal.

2. Letters of Recommendation

Request three letters of recommendation from professors or others who can assess your promise of success in our mathematics education graduate program and enter their contact information into your online portal at the link above. You will enter their names and email addresses under the References tab in the MSU online application. Your recommenders will then be prompted to upload their letter of recommendation online. At least one letter should be from one of your teachers in the highest degree you have earned to date.  If your recommenders have any issues with the website, please have them send their letter of reference to the Academic Program Coordinator, Freda Cruél at [email protected] .

Applicants should submit one or more examples of academic or professional writing, e.g., something you have published, a master’s thesis, or a paper you might have submitted to fulfill graduate course requirements. The sample must be authored exclusively by the applicant. The purpose is to demonstrate your ability to write English prose in order to give the review committee a clear idea of how well you will be able to carry out the kind of writing that is such a central component of advanced graduate study. It would be most useful if this paper were at least 10 pages long (double-spaced).

An applicant may submit several such papers to the online gradportal site: https://explore.msu.edu/apply/ . Again, if you have any issues with the site, please send it via email to the Academic Program Coordinator. Please identify the course for which this paper was written, or the original purpose for this paper.

4. Statement of Professional Goals/Academic Statement/Applicant Statement

From an autobiographical perspective, applicants should discuss their reasons for pursuing a doctoral degree. We will refer to this document as either your statement of professional goals, or your academic statement. On the MSU application, it is called an academic statement. In your academic statement, please include responses to the following questions:

  • What question or area of interest related to mathematics education are you interested in exploring?
  • How have your experiences and intellectual growth shaped questions that an advanced graduate program might help you to explore?
  • What sorts of academic and professional leadership roles would the program and degree help you to assume after graduation?
  • Why are you interested in the mathematics education Ph.D. program at Michigan State University?

This statement is a very important part of the file for the review committee. Candidates should present a thoughtful and extended verbal portrait (2-3 pages long, single-spaced) of their reasons for pursuing advanced graduate study, and the match between their goals and professional interest that they wish to explore during their graduate career. This document can either be completed within the MSU application itself, or uploaded as a separate document to the online gradportal site:  https://explore.msu.edu/apply/ . Again, if you have any issues with the site, please send it via email to the Academic Program Coordinator. If you completed the personal and academic statements on the MSU application, you do not need to submit a separate statement of professional goals. The statements written on the MSU application will be sufficient. We also do not need a separate Applicant Statement - the Academic Statement and Personal Statement (described below) are sufficient.

The personal statement is a place where you can document your background and describe any obstacles you have overcome along your personal and/or educational journey. You can type your personal statement in the designated place on the MSU Application or upload it as a separate document to the online gradportal site:  https://explore.msu.edu/apply/ . The directions in the MSU Application state: The personal statement should include information about your background and life experiences. Items you might address include but are not limited to leadership experiences, how you might contribute to a diverse educational community, and any obstacles you may have overcome.

6. Current Curriculum Vitae or Resumé

Applicants are required to submit a current curriculum vita or resumé, listing educational background, GPA, and teaching experience. Upload to the online gradportal site:  https://explore.msu.edu/apply/.

Send official transcripts from all universities attended, except Michigan State University, to the Academic Program Coordinator at the address above. Do not send copies to the graduate school or to Admissions. You may upload unofficial copies for now to the gradportal site:  https://explore.msu.edu/apply/ , but the university will need official transcripts before a student can be admitted. Official e-transcripts will be sent directly to Admissions.

8. English language Proficiency, such as TOEFL Scores (International Students Only)

Applicants for whom English is not their primary language are required to submit English Language Proficiency scores, such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), and the test must be taken within two years of the application. Please select Michigan State University as a recipient of your scores, code 1465 .

With the internet-based version of the TOEFL (iBT), the minimum MSU requirement is an average score of 80, with no subscore below 19 for reading, listening, and speaking, and no writing subscore below 22. Please visit The Graduate School site for more information regarding English Language Competency and other accepted English Language Tests: https://grad.msu.edu/english-language-competency .

Note:  If the student has completed a degree program in an English speaking country, he or she can request a waiver of the English Language Proficiency Test requirement. Once the program admissions committee is convinced of the student’s English language skills based on past program completion and other evidence, it will ask the University to waive the requirement. This waiver is usually granted, but the university typically requires the admitted student to take the English proficiency test (MSU Speaking Test) upon arrival at MSU before allowing the student to become a Teaching Assistant.

Next Steps for Round 3 Admits and Waitlisted Candidates

The Ross building with bright yellow tulips in the foreground of the image

Spring in Ann Arbor transforms the University of Michigan's campus into a sea of vibrant colors as thousands of flowers bloom. The Diag, which is the heart of the campus, has become a bustling hub of student activity.

Perhaps the most enchanting aspect is the sense of renewal and possibility that permeates the air, inspiring students, faculty, staff, and prospective students to embrace new challenges and ideas with the fresh energy of the season.

Round 3 decision release

The admissions team is currently reviewing Round 3 applications. Applicants who are invited to interview will receive an email on April 16. All interviews must be completed by Sunday, April 21st. At the conclusion of the interview period, applicants will also receive an additional evaluation. This evaluation will determine the status outcome of your application. If you are admitted, we will call you on Thursday, May 2, with official admit information being sent via email on Friday, May 3. As always, there is no special order to the calls other than our efforts to be mindful of time zones.

Applicants on the waitlist

If you were waitlisted in Round 1 or 2, we re-reviewed your application in Round 3. If you are admitted, you will receive a call on the same day as other Round 3 admits.

If you do not receive a call, you may remain on the waitlist or be denied. We will email all candidates who remain on the waitlist with the next steps to follow and a link to a form to provide updates. We reconsider waitlisted applications on a rolling basis.
