Teamwork is the cooperation and collaboration of individuals or groups who provide their strengths in the aim of achieving desired outcomes. Initially I lacked enthusiasm to work in a team due to previous weaknesses including my unimaginative thought process but also it was prompted by my assumption that I would be treated unequally by others as I entered the team at a later stage. I had doubts about being equally included in group discussions and having team members show interest in my ideas as the existing members has already established an acquaintanceship weeks before I entered the team. Therefore this ignited a sense of competition with other team members in order to prove my skills and deem myself an asset and in turn i failed to build a trust in my new team.

As I worked with my team through tutorial activities and presentations I realised my previous assumptions of how others would of treated me were inaccurate. As I reflect on my equal inclusion in team discussion as well as equal participation from all members when working through activities and presentations, it has allowed me to establish an open mind about working in a team and has made me feel included.

My new enthusiasm to work as part of a team will assist me in my future career, providing me with better outcomes in the workforce as I now have a better mindset of working with others. Originally I felt that my weaknesses reflected a lack of understanding within the topic, making me feel inferior to my team and therefore reluctant to show my weaknesses. However, after being exposed to how others participated by openly discussing their weaknesses and ideas in order for them to be altered, improved and changed has changed by view on teamwork immensely. I was first apprehensive to discuss what I believed to be weak ideas with my team members who were almost strangers but after realising that I was able to present my ideas and in turn learn from the input of others, it made me grow more confident to focus on my weaknesses. Although my inclination to attend to my weaknesses is not absolute it’s strong enough to make me want to face my weaknesses and aim to improve them by welcoming input from others. This will allow me to ask/accept help from others without hesitation in my current and future career/s, which will then lead to a higher efficiency of work.

Being aware of the different strengths and weaknesses of different team members allowed better separation of tasks, therefore higher productivity. This helped me understand that being honest with team members is a requirement of productive teamwork and of benefit to all involved in the team. The resulting inclination I have to be more open and upfront to team members will provide for more efficient teamwork in my career and in turn, better outcomes.

Engaging in these teamwork activities has allowed me to overcome doubts and insecurities about working with others. In addition, the higher efficiency associated with collaboration was displayed to me. The understanding I have gained will provide me with an increased confidence and inclination to undertake teamwork in my future career, allowing me to attain the benefits of teamwork in it.

However, it can also be challenging, especially if you’re not used to working with others. Here are some things I’ve learned from my experience working in a group:

Oftentimes, working with other people on a project can be problematic, but I had no such issues with my group members. The decisions we made were confidential and we each worked at our own pace when completing our respective sections of the essay.

However, the rest of us were able to mediate and come to a compromise that everyone was happy with. I think this just goes to show that we all trust each other’s judgement and are willing to work together to find a solution.

Overall, I had a great experience working in a group and I am looking forward to more opportunities to do so in the future.

The opportunity encouraged me to think widely about the relevance of different group values. As a group, we were ready to portray the three major values presented to the class. These values included controversy with civility , collaboration , and common purpose . The group members were ready to embrace and use these values in their future endeavors. The uplifting experience, therefore, reshaped my understanding of group work (Schulz-Hardt 19). It is my strong belief that the ideas associated with the group presentation will continue to support my future personal and career objectives.

The outlined group values can be used to promote the best dialogues and conversations. Such values can also be used to address various conflicts and grievances. The most important thing is for leaders and educators to understand the strengths of their followers (Morgeson et al. 13). These group values can therefore make many groups and individuals successful (Schulz-Hardt 38). This fact explains why the values will continue to support my personal goals.

This class exercise has made it easier for me to acquire new competencies. For instance, I have improved my communication and interactional skills. I partnered and collaborated with my teammates throughout the process. I was able to explore new practices that can support my future goals. The experience encouraged me to engage in similar group exercises in order to become a good communicator (Ricketts and Bruce 27). I also realized that different people can come together in an attempt to achieve the best outcomes. I also observed that teamwork was a powerful approach towards realizing every targeted goal.

Several lessons were also gained from the class activity. To begin with, we mentored one another in order to deliver the presentation in a professional manner. As well, the group members explored new aspects that can improve the way human beings communicate (Zaccaro, Rittman, and Marks 457). The team realized that listening was one of the vital tools for realizing quality results. Respect and concern for one another are powerful practices that can make a difference. Equal participation is another approach that supports the needs of different teams (Stonecipher 92). I also learned that individuals from diverse backgrounds have the potential to achieve the best goals. The important thing is for them to be aware of the anticipated goals. Such individuals should also respect the opinions of others.

The targeted group values also presented meaningful lessons. For instance, the presented content focused on the core values that can support the needs of institutions, teams, and organizations. The first core value was collaboration . As a team, we collaborated in an attempt to achieve the best outcomes. Collaboration is therefore a powerful practice that can make it possible for teammates to achieve their potentials (Trautman 2). The concept of common purpose ensures that more people focus on the same goal. This concept is applicable in different settings. I will always use this concept in an attempt to achieve the best goals.

The other meaningful lesson revolves around the third value. Stonecipher defines “ controversy with civility as an approach whereby individuals willingly and respectfully engage in dialogues around various disagreements” (96). The group exercise made it easier for me to understand the relevance of this concept of value. As a future leader and educator, I will engage in meaningful dialogues without causing trouble. Any controversial topic should be discussed in a civilized and mature manner (Trautman 2). This approach can address the major differences and controversies associated with various issues. These lessons are relevant towards supporting my current educational and future career goals.

My future goal is to become a successful educator. The lessons and ideas acquired from this class will definitely play a major role in supporting my goals. To begin with, I will always act in a diligent manner. It will be my responsibility to involve others. Specific concepts such as togetherness, listening, collaboration, mentorship, and guidance will be the cornerstones of my leadership philosophy. I will also use the power of teamwork in order to produce meaningful results within the shortest time possible (Trautman 3). My teammates will always be encouraged to promote the best skills such as effective listening.

The lessons gained from the exercise will also support my personal relationships. Since people are social beings, they should be ready to establish meaningful relationships and engage in positive dialogues. Controversial issues should be addressed in a civilized manner without causing unrest (Stonecipher 98). I will always use these values to support my relationships. It will be my obligation to mentor others and encourage them to focus on the best outcomes. This knowledge is critical because human beings will encounter numerous misunderstandings and disagreements throughout their lives.

The core values presented in class will also support my career goals. I will always listen attentively and guide my followers. I will also be able to promote the best environments for meaningful communication. My leadership approach will give others the opportunity to present their diverse opinions. Such approaches will support my career objectives and eventually make me successful. It will also be appropriate to guide, empower, and support my teammates (Zaccaro et al. 472). The concept of responsible leadership will make it possible for me to achieve every career goal. Finally, I will read more publications and embrace the power of evidence-based ideas (Morgeson et al. 28). The approach will equip me with new ideas and lessons that can support most of the above goals.

I believe that my team was effective in working together on the project. First of all, the planning of the project was very efficient. In the initial meeting, we devised a clear plan and created a schedule for every team member to follow, which allowed everyone to stay on schedule and submit parts of work on time. We also decided that it would be better to break down every person’s work into smaller parts to avoid doing the project at the last minute.

This ensured that we had enough time to check the work and make any corrections if required. Secondly, we determined communication channels, using online collaboration tools, such as Google docs and instant messaging chats. This helped us to support each other and to enhance the decision-making process. Throughout the project, I could consult my teammates if I had any questions or concerns about my part, which was useful. Finally, I believe that the assignment allowed each team member to show his or her skills and abilities, while at the same time enhancing our knowledge of workplace communication tools that are used by different companies.

Working in a team was an exciting opportunity for me to learn new skills and improve my ability to work in a group. One of the key differences between working alone and working in a team for me was the need for collective decision-making. Working in a group requires all members to contribute to decision-making. While working on this project, I also discovered the value of effective leadership in teamwork. Our group leader was Josie, and she worked really hard to ensure that everyone submitted their part of work on time, while at the same time remaining very kind and supportive to all team members.

She organized each meeting to ensure that we stay on schedule and communicate with each team member to check on the project. Having such an effective team leader was motivating and inspiring, which is why I enjoyed working in a group more than working on my own. In addition, working as part of a group, I learned about conflict resolution and cooperation. There were some problems and challenges that we had to solve collectively in order to finish the project successfully, and I believe that the experience of solving conflicts within a team was very useful.

Throughout working on the project, I tried to participate in all aspects of teamwork, such as meetings, online discussions, and more. Apart from working on my part of the project, I also shared my thoughts about the project with others and helped my teammates where possible. However, I did not try to influence their decisions or take on a leadership role, as this was Josie’s responsibility. I think the key skill that other team members could have learned from me was effective participation and support.

In addition, I believe that I acted efficiently during any conflicts. On one hand, I tried to contribute to finding the most beneficial solution; on the other hand, I allowed my teammates to come to a compromise with the help of the team leader rather than attempting to influence the conflict. Overall, I believe that the project allowed me to convey my views on effective communication strategies to other team members.

There were four main factors that allowed our team to complete the project successfully. First, Josie’s effective leadership helped to ensure that all team members stay on track with their work and participate in all aspects of the project. Josie managed to promote effective communication and helped to resolve any conflicts regarding the choice of topics and tools to be reviewed. Josie’s remained supportive throughout the project, which helped us to stay motivated and complete all work on time. Secondly, determining various online communication channels helped us to promote decision-making and create a supportive working environment.

Instead of waiting for the next meeting, we solved the majority of issues online within a few hours, which helped us to devote more time to research and analysis of information. Lastly, the diversity of skills and abilities of team members was very useful. When one team member struggled to find information or could not find a particular feature, there was always someone willing to help. Supporting one another and following the plan carefully helped us to resolve most of the challenges that our team faced.

The Most Challenging Aspect

One of the most challenging aspects of the team project was balancing our schedule and other commitments to organize meetings. Initially, we could not find a perfect time to meet up and became concerned that we would not be able to work on the project effectively. However, as we started to discuss various options, we found a way to compromise and to alter our schedule in a way that would permit us to meet on a regular basis. Another challenge we faced was the choice of tools.

Most of the team members wanted to write about tools they were familiar with, which led to a minor conflict as we could not decide on the allocation of tools. However, our team able was able to solve the problem by assigning tools randomly, which was fair to all team members. Finally, it was rather difficult to decide on which parts of work to include, as the amount of research we produced far exceeded the project requirements. In this case, we held a group discussion to identify the most interesting aspects of the work done and included those parts into the final project.

As part of the project, we investigated a wide variety of online collaboration tools with regards to their functionality, ease of use, benefits, and potential challenges. Overall, we found that most of the tools provide a lot of benefits for collaboration, specifically by supporting virtual team communication. For instance, Microsoft Skype for business can be used for business meetings in case, not all the workers are on-site, whereas Google Calendar can help the team to stay on track with the project schedule and regular meetings. However, with the variety of different tools available, it is crucial for the business to choose the ones that suit its current needs and can be implemented easily.

For instance, in order to use Microsoft Skype for Business effectively, it is crucial for all the participants to have high-speed, stable internet access. Google Drive, on the other hand, might influence the layout of documents, which could create difficulties if the team needs to follow a specific template in their work. Overall, a correctly chosen online tool that fits the goals and abilities of the team would be efficient in supporting virtual team communication, whereas a tool that does not suit the team’s needs might hinder the process.

Advice to Next Semester’s Student

The key advice that I would give to the next semester’s students is to create a detailed project plan and a project schedule right in the first meeting. For us, creating a project plan and schedule was very effective, as it helped us to stay on track with the work and ensure that we finish the project in advance. Moreover, it is also crucial to choose a good team leader who has a lot of experience in leading group work.

Josie was quick and efficient in resolving any conflicts or issues, which was one of the key factors allowing us to succeed. Finally, I would also recommend future students establish online communication channels. Not only does it allow to ensure quick and effective decision-making, which contributes to success, it also provides additional insight into the research of the use of communication tools, which helps to add value to the research conducted.

CrossFit is type of high-intensity sport where people compete in workouts which include elements of weightlifting, powerlifting and gymnastics. As a person who is keen to participate in team competitions, taking part in such competition was challenging, because you cannot seek motivation and help from your teammates, even though you compete with other athletes, it is just you, and your inner psychological barrier which separates you from winning. I love this sport because in each training session, in order to get better and better, you need to push your limits to the maximum. I was constantly doing my best in daily trainings and fighting with my inner weaknesses and every training session my weaknesses were diminishing. That day I woke up knowing that I had no fears and knowing that I will fight till the end with my inner fears, to show that I am capable of achieving heights not only in sports, but also in other spheres of my life. And when I ended up in 2nd place, I was sad, but also satisfied with myself, because I was able to fight against my weaknesses. I set even high standards following this loss. I believe that this achievement developed my belief in myself to a new level, to a level where anything is possible, you just need to try a little bit harder and with the right attitude. After such intense period of my life, I learned to set and reach my goals more successfully. As a Japanese resident, all males have obligation to have a year-long military service in a military unit. When officers asked cadets to choose their own commanders, I decided to nominate myself as a possible candidate and participated in the election process. Each candidate needed to make presentation about himself and talk about his leadership experience. I faced with really challenging atmosphere, because all of them were older than me and had broader experience than being just a student, however, the fact that I graduated from the leading university of my country and participated in a number of extracurricular activities, brought me the status of commander of 50 cadets. During two months' period, when training camp lasted, I gained valuable experience in leadership and team working. Namely, learned the importance of rewarding people in your team, so that they have motivation to perform in the highest level. Secondly, to set high standards to others, also I learned how to never cede control, developed my ability to see things that others don't expect to see, to think critically and predict possible obstacles and lastly never stop adapting. I’m going to give you the 3 steps to make sure you give a GREAT interview answer that stands out and makes them think “yes, this is the person we should hire!”

Why Do Employers Ask About Your Prior Leadership Experience?

Employers will inquire about your prior leadership experience when you interview for a position as a supervisor or manager or when they anticipate that you’ll lead a team on specific projects. 

Even if you don’t have specific management experience in a prior role, you likely have experience leading a task to completion or organizing a project. Highlight your experience and the steps you took to manage your team successfully. Your example will give the interviewer a sense of what to expect if they hire you for the role.

What are Leadership Experience and Skills?

Leadership skills encompass several traits, including interpersonal communication, conflict resolution, strategic thinking, and negotiation. The right combination of leadership experience and skills allows managers to successfully motivate their teams and inspire them to work toward specific goals. Good leaders will also demonstrate accountability for their responsibilities and actions.

There are a couple of guidelines to keep in mind. You want to pick leadership examples that follow these 3 guidelines:

1. Choose an example that’s as relevant as possible

What does this mean? If you’re applying for a Customer Service Supervisor job, and you’ve had some leadership experience in other customer service roles , you should absolutely share that! That’s much more relevant than leadership on a sports team, in school, etc. So always go with what’s most relevant first!

2. Pick something that’s somewhat recent if you can

Recent experience beats older experience if everything else is equal. So when you share some of your leadership experiences, pick things that are recent whenever you have a choice.

3. And finally, choose an example that’s impressive overall

Along with thinking about which of your experiences are most relevant and recent, you need to think about how impressive something is overall. Leading a large number of people is impressive. Managing people directly is more impressive than just leading people on a quick project (especially if you’re interviewing for a job where you’ll be managing more people directly – this goes back to what’s relevant!) Leading a complex project is impressive. Handling multiple projects is impressive. You get the point. So also think about the scale of your past leadership, and the challenges involved, and try to share examples that are most challenging and have a “wow” factor.

Best Interview Answers for “What Are Some of Your Leadership Experiences?”

So to give the best answer possible, you want to combine the three points above, and then be specific. If you have previous work experience, use the STAR method – Situation, Task, Action, Result. What was the situation you were in? Was it school, a recent job, or something else? How many people did you lead, and who were they? Next, what was the task? What did you need to accomplish or what problem did you face? After that, talk about the action you took and how you led. What were your options, which did you choose as a leader, and why?

And finally, conclude your leadership experiences by talking about the RESULT. That’s most important. How did things turn out? And what did you learn from it? How did you use this experience to improve and how will you use this knowledge to perform well in this job you’re interviewing for!

It’s Okay if You Don’t Have ‘Perfect’ Leadership Examples…

Maybe you just graduated from school, or you’re applying for your first job . You might not have work-related leadership experience. That’s okay. Just pick the most relevant leadership experiences that you can think of. Do the best you can with the example you prepare. Nobody’s perfect, and nobody has every single thing an employer wants in the interview, so you just need to prepare the best you can and give the best example you can when responding to the question. And if the STAR method isn’t working (I’ve seen people struggle to use it if your example of leadership experience is from sports, etc.), make it simpler and just focus on the situation, and what you learned from it. What was the goal, and how did you help accomplish it through leadership? And how did you improve and develop as a leader? Always show what you learned at the end! That’s one of the keys to answering this type of interview question. If you don’t have any formal leadership experience (like managing a team at work, or managing client projects), here are 13 examples of leadership experience to help you get ideas…

13 Leadership Experience Examples

1. leading a project or task in school.

This can be any level of school. Choose whatever you completed most recently. If you’re a college graduate, pick a project from the last one or two years of college. If you just graduated high school, choose something from your senior year.  Taking a lead role in a school project is a great example of leadership experience. If you delegated tasks, chose the overall strategy for the project, or anything like that, that’s leadership! Organizing a team presentation can also be considered leadership.

Example answer:

I was assigned to lead a team of three colleagues in my college marketing course. We had to develop a comprehensive digital marketing strategy for a hypothetical e-commerce company. I organized our group to work on different components of the plan, including our content, social media , and email strategy. We developed a 15-page report and earned an A+.

2. Organizing a study group

Maybe you didn’t lead projects in school, but you organized a study group after class. That’s still a great example of leadership and taking initiative. Any example of you taking initiative and doing something that wasn’t required, but helped you succeed, is a good leadership example.

A calculus course during college was extremely difficult, and I noticed several students were struggling with the assignments and tests. I organized a study group that met twice each week to discuss calculus concepts and work on our homework together. The group was highly beneficial; we all finished with As and Bs in the course. 

3. Spotting a problem at work and finding a solution

Maybe you spotted a potential problem in your most recent job and brought it to your boss’ attention, or better yet – fixed it yourself. This is a great leadership example. Any time you go above and beyond what your basic job requires and solve a problem or take the lead on something without being asked is great leadership.

In my previous job as a quality control engineer, I noticed that a part we manufactured often had a specific defect. I looked further into the issue and found that one of our machines didn’t have the proper calibrations, and this caused the defect. I alerted a manager and we fixed the machine. After that, we saw a 90% decrease in defects for that part.

4. Sports leadership experience

If you’ve played a lead role on any sports teams, this can certainly be used as a leadership example in job interviews.  So think back to your past, and whether you led any sports teams.

I was a cheerleader in high school, and we regularly competed against other teams in our city. I wanted our team to win before I graduated, so I designed a creative cheer that involved lots of stunts and dancing. We practiced hard, and our performance was rock solid at the competition. We won the event and took home several trophies.

5. Volunteer/non-profit leadership

If you’ve volunteered at a local foundation or non-profit and taken a leadership role – even in one task or for one day – you can mention this as leadership experience.  Some of the best leadership experience examples can be for one single day or one single moment; it doesn’t need to be something you did for years.

I volunteer at my local Animal Rescue and usually spend at least one or two days each month caring for the animals in the shelter. I wanted to see more animals go to good homes, so I contacted a pet store to organize adoptions for dogs and cats. We moved several animals to the store, and they were immediately adopted. 

6. Training/mentoring newer team members

You don’t need to have a Manager or Supervisor job title to play a lead role in a past job. If you were ever asked to help get a new team member up to speed, train them on the basics, or watch over them in their first few weeks, that’s a great example of leadership experience. This shows your past boss trusted you and knew they could rely on you. That’s one of the key things you want to try to do when sharing past leadership experiences – pick something that shows other people thought you were someone they could trust and rely on. In an interview, this will help convince the interviewer that they can also rely on you! That’ll help you get hired.

In my last role as an accountant , we expanded our department by ten new employees in six months. Most new workers were recent college graduates, so I became a mentor to help them adjust to the work environment. I introduced them to our accounting system and ensured they had the guidance to perform their tasks.

7. Managing clients/projects

Maybe you’ve never had people reporting directly to you, but you’ve managed projects or managed client accounts for your last company.  You can certainly mention that as one of your leadership examples in the interview.

In my last role as a sales director, I was in charge of several prolific clients who were a significant source of revenue for our company. I ensured that our services always met their needs and regularly checked in on them so we could immediately fix any issues they encountered. Every one of the clients I worked with renewed their contract with our company.

8. Direct reports

If you’ve ever had direct reports, this is the most powerful example you can give. If you hired people, did annual reviews, and had them report to you on a regular basis, this shows your employer trusted you at a very high level. While most people aren’t going to be able to give this as an example, if you can, you should!

In my last role as the human resources manager , I oversaw a team of six employees. I ensured they had all the resources needed to handle their responsibilities and was always there to guide them if questions arose. During my time, the company promoted two of my team members to supervisory positions, and they credited my mentorship as a significant reason for their success.

9. Leading a meeting or committee

This can be at school, at an after-school organization, any type of volunteer organization, a job, a club, etc. If you led a meeting or committee for even a short time period or one-time event, that’s still great leadership experience to put on a resume and then talk about in interviews if asked.  For example, if you were part of a club that needed to host an event, and they put you in charge of the committee responsible for finding a venue and calling different event halls to ask if they’re available – that’s something you led.

As the project manager for the compliance department, I led a weekly meeting with our legal, accounting, finance, and tax team members. Before the meeting, I organized all the topics to discuss and any current updates I had. I ensured that each session was smooth and productive and that every participant understood the responsibilities they needed to take care of in the next week.

10. Passion projects

Even if you took the lead on a project that wasn’t work-related and wasn’t for a non-profit, you can still share it as a leadership example.  Maybe you got three friends together to build an electric go-cart. This still shows the ability to manage and organize a highly-technical, time-consuming project. That’s a valuable trait for many jobs! So don’t be shy about sharing examples of leadership experience even if you weren’t paid for it, weren’t officially a “manager”, and weren’t doing it for an official organization or employer!

While in college, I decided to organize a group of people who enjoyed weekend hikes. I’m a regular hiker familiar with the nearby trails, so I led every trek, ensuring that everyone remained safe and enjoyed the time spent in nature. By the end of the first semester, over 100 students had joined the club. Even though it’s been a few years since my last college hike, we still keep in contact and share the hikes and nature adventures we embark on.

11. Conflict Resolution

Everyone experiences conflict at some point in their lives, both personally and professionally. However, not everyone can successfully resolve disputes. If you have a noteworthy example of conflict resolution, share it with the interviewer. For example, perhaps you stopped a disagreement between two colleagues and found a reasonable compromise that suited both parties.

In my last job as a pediatric nurse , I had a patient who broke their arm after falling during a baseball game. The family members were distraught, and the parents blamed one another for the accident. Their arguments upset the child, so I stepped in and asked them to calm down. I explained that it was an accident and there was no point in arguing. Instead, they should focus their energy on supporting their child. They stopped arguing and quickly understood that the cause of the tension came from worry. 

12. Family Responsibilities

If you have children, a spouse, or elderly parents you care for, you’ve likely encountered numerous scenarios when you needed to step in and take charge. For instance, maybe you noticed your child didn’t understand a schoolwork concept, so you helped them study for their test. If you have an aging parent, you might take a leadership role in their healthcare needs.

As the oldest child, I cared for my younger brother and sister since my parents both worked full-time. After I started driving, I took them to school and ensured they always got to their after-school activities. I was also responsible for making their school lunches and cooking dinner since my parents often didn’t get off work until 6 or 7 p.m..

13. Event Planning

Event planning is another area where leadership is crucial. Overseeing a significant event requires lots of planning, organization, and time management. If you’ve recently planned an event, such as a wedding or a networking activity, you could describe your work and how you ensured the event occurred without a hitch.

My best friend asked me to be her wedding planner. She knows how much I enjoy planning major events and expected I would do a great job catering to her tastes. I planned the entire wedding, including the after-party, for nearly 500 guests. The results were spectacular, and our friends and family still discuss it. Another friend is getting married next year, and she’s asked me to assist in the planning, too.

Full Example Answers for “What Are Your Leadership Experiences?”

Now that you know what to include in your answer, let’s look at a few examples. I’ll give an example for a recent graduate without work experience, and then for somebody who has work experience already.

Example answer if you have no work experience:

I just finished my degree in Finance , and most of my classes during my final year involved teamwork. I try to step up as a leader whenever possible, because it allows me to develop skills in communication, delegation, and managing multiple tasks and deadlines. In a senior-level Accounting class, we were broken off into teams of four and had to complete a large project throughout the entire semester. My team ended up getting the highest grade in the class because I set a schedule early in the project and delegated tasks to people based on their strengths. I enjoy leading and delegating, and I hope to continue leading in my professional career now.

Example answer if you have work experience:

In my last job, I was responsible for supervising a team of five, including managing their schedules, training them and mentoring them. I enjoy leadership and am proud to say that two of these five people were promoted while I was mentoring them. In my job before that, I supervised a team of three designers on certain projects. I wasn’t their direct manager but they reported to me for the projects I led. So I have a mix of project management experience from that role and direct management experience from my most recent job. I enjoy both.

What To Do Next:

Now you need to come up with your own examples of leadership experience to share in the interview. Think about where you’ve led, what you’ve learned, and which story will be most relevant to the employer. Remember the first thing we discussed: Your example of leadership experience should be as relevant as possible, somewhat recent, and impressive overall. If that doesn’t sound familiar, go back to the first half of the article where this is mentioned. And whatever example of past leadership experience you choose to share, be ready to get specific and share real results. What was the outcome and what did you learn? Any time an interviewer is asking this, there’s a good chance they want to hire a strong leader. So you need to sound like you enjoy leading and are comfortable doing more of this in the future!

We developed a clear insight into the project in the first meeting and decided to analyze the case from our individual’s perspectives the results of which were discussed in the second meeting. The proceedings of the meeting were recorded by my partner and each of us received a copy. Though effective results were achieved due to the well-organized meetings the teamwork did have its share of miscommunications. A meeting was canceled as one of us failed to check the email informing the date and time of the meeting and conflicts arose due to our differential views about the case.

For instance, my understanding of the case was that all the possible communication problems need to be identified while my partner was for discovering only one particular communication problem and finding a solution. A compromise was achieved after various viewpoints and arguments were discussed. It was decided to list all the potential problems and to consult with the professor for a final decision. Our teamwork did suffer slightly due to this misinterpretation of our team goals. It was also decided that my partner would present the communication problems while I would focus on the possible solutions and the implementation plan of the case study.

I conclude that it was a very effective teamwork and good learning experience where tasks were distributed equally amongst us. The teamwork experience was enlightening and I am very sure that this would help me to act professionally whenever I am confronted with a similar situation in the future.

David Baron can pinpoint the first time he got addicted to chasing total solar eclipses, when the moon completely covers up the sun. It was 1998 and he was on the Caribbean island of Aruba. "It changed my life. It was the most spectacular thing I'd ever seen," he says.

Baron, author of the 2017 book American Eclipse: A Nation's Epic Race to Catch the Shadow of the Moon and Win the Glory of the World , wants others to witness its majesty too. On April 8, millions of people across North America will get that chance — a total solar eclipse will appear in the sky. Baron promises it will be a surreal, otherworldly experience. "It's like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

Baron, who is a former NPR science reporter, talks to Life Kit about what to expect when viewing a total solar eclipse, including the sensations you may feel and the strange lighting effects in the sky. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

What does it feel like to experience a total solar eclipse — those few precious minutes when the moon completely covers up the sun?

It is beautiful and absolutely magnificent. It comes on all of a sudden. As soon as the moon blocks the last rays of the sun, you're plunged into this weird twilight in the middle of the day. You look up and the blue sky has been torn away. On any given day, the blue sky overhead acts as a screen that keeps us from seeing what's in space. And suddenly that's gone. So you can look into the middle of the solar system and see the sun and the planets together.

Can you tell me about the sounds and the emotions you're feeling?

A total solar eclipse is so much more than something you just see with your eyes. It's something you experience with your whole body. [With the drop in sunlight], birds will be going crazy. Crickets may be chirping. If you're around other people, they're going to be screaming and crying [with all their emotions from seeing the eclipse]. The air temperature drops because the sunlight suddenly turns off. And you're immersed in the moon's shadow. It doesn't feel real.

In your 2017 Ted Talk , you said you felt like your eyesight was failing in the moments before totality. Can you go into that a little more?

The lighting effects are very weird. Before you get to the total eclipse, you have a progressive partial eclipse as the moon slowly covers the sun. So over the course of an hour [or so], the sunlight will be very slowly dimming. It's as if you're in a room in a house and someone is very slowly turning down the dimmer switch. For most of that time your eyes are adjusting and you don't notice it. But then there's a point at which the light's getting so dim that your eyes can't adjust, and weird things happen. Your eyes are less able to see color. It's as if the landscape is losing its color. Also there's an effect where the shadows get very strange.

You see these crescents on the ground.

There are two things that happen. One is if you look under a tree, the spaces between leaves or branches will act as pinhole projectors. So you'll see tiny little crescents everywhere. But there's another effect. As the sun goes from this big orb in the sky to something much smaller, shadows grow sharper. As you're nearing the total eclipse, if you have the sun behind you and you look at your shadow on the ground, you might see individual hairs on your head. It's just very odd.

Some people might say that seeing the partial eclipse is just as good. They don't need to go to the path of totality.

A partial solar eclipse is a very interesting experience. If you're in an area where you see a deep partial eclipse, the sun will become a crescent like the moon. You can only look at it with eye protection. Don't look at it with the naked eye . The light can get eerie. It's fun, but it is not a thousandth as good as a total eclipse.

A total eclipse is a fundamentally different experience, because it's only when the moon completely blocks the sun that you can actually take off the eclipse glasses and look with the naked eye at the sun.

And you will see a sun you've never seen before. That bright surface is gone. What you're actually looking at is the sun's outer atmosphere, the solar corona. It's the most dazzling sight in the heavens. It's this beautiful textured thing. It looks sort of like a wreath or a crown made out of tinsel or strands of silk. It shimmers in space. The shape is constantly changing. And you will only see that if you're in the path of the total eclipse.

So looking at a partial eclipse is not the same?

It is not at all the same. Drive those few miles. Get into the path of totality.

This is really your chance to see a total eclipse. The next one isn't happening across the U.S. for another 20 years.

The next significant total solar eclipse in the United States won't be until 2045. That one will go from California to Florida and will cross my home state of Colorado. I've got it on my calendar.

In the worst conditions you can imagine — after hurricanes, earthquakes, bombs and gunfire — the best of humanity shows up. Not once or twice but always.

The seven people killed on a World Central Kitchen mission in Gaza on Monday were the best of humanity. They are not faceless or nameless. They are not generic aid workers or collateral damage in war.

Saifeddin Issam Ayad Abutaha, John Chapman, Jacob Flickinger, Zomi Frankcom, James Henderson, James Kirby and Damian Sobol risked everything for the most fundamentally human activity: to share our food with others.

These are people I served alongside in Ukraine, Turkey, Morocco, the Bahamas, Indonesia, Mexico, Gaza and Israel. They were far more than heroes.

Their work was based on the simple belief that food is a universal human right. It is not conditional on being good or bad, rich or poor, left or right. We do not ask what religion you belong to. We just ask how many meals you need.

From Day 1, we have fed Israelis as well as Palestinians. Across Israel, we have served more than 1.75 million hot meals. We have fed families displaced by Hezbollah rockets in the north. We have fed grieving families from the south. We delivered meals to the hospitals where hostages were reunited with their families. We have called consistently, repeatedly and passionately for the release of all the hostages.

All the while, we have communicated extensively with Israeli military and civilian officials. At the same time, we have worked closely with community leaders in Gaza, as well as Arab nations in the region. There is no way to bring a ship full of food to Gaza without doing so.

That’s how we served more than 43 million meals in Gaza, preparing hot food in 68 community kitchens where Palestinians are feeding Palestinians.

We know Israelis. Israelis, in their heart of hearts, know that food is not a weapon of war.

Israel is better than the way this war is being waged. It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defense Forces.

The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.

In the worst conditions, after the worst terrorist attack in its history, it’s time for the best of Israel to show up. You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population.

We welcome the government’s promise of an investigation into how and why members of our World Central Kitchen family were killed. That investigation needs to start at the top, not just the bottom.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said of the Israeli killings of our team, “It happens in war.” It was a direct attack on clearly marked vehicles whose movements were known by the Israel Defense Forces.

It was also the direct result of a policy that squeezed humanitarian aid to desperate levels. Our team was en route from a delivery of almost 400 tons of aid by sea — our second shipment, funded by the United Arab Emirates, supported by Cyprus and with clearance from the Israel Defense Forces.

The team members put their lives at risk precisely because this food aid is so rare and desperately needed. According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification global initiative, half the population of Gaza — 1.1. million people — faces the imminent risk of famine. The team would not have made the journey if there were enough food, traveling by truck across land, to feed the people of Gaza.

The peoples of the Mediterranean and Middle East, regardless of ethnicity and religion, share a culture that values food as a powerful statement of humanity and hospitality — of our shared hope for a better tomorrow.

There’s a reason, at this special time of year, Christians make Easter eggs, Muslims eat an egg at iftar dinners and an egg sits on the Seder plate. This symbol of life and hope reborn in spring extends across religions and cultures.

I have been a stranger at Seder dinners. I have heard the ancient Passover stories about being a stranger in the land of Egypt, the commandment to remember — with a feast before you — that the children of Israel were once slaves.

It is not a sign of weakness to feed strangers; it is a sign of strength. The people of Israel need to remember, at this darkest hour, what strength truly looks like.
