My grandmother, or Ma-Maw , was the kind of generous busybody who made six different pies for her granddaughters’ birthdays. She invited everyone on the block, so nothing went to waste. Once, when we both went to shovel up the last slice of pie, she laughed, and said, “ noblesse oblige .” She often spoke French, a Louisiana French foreign yet familiar to me. I didn’t think to ask what she’d meant. Did she think I was noble? Was that why I got to scarf down the last of the cherry pie?

Ma-Maw died the summer before I entered high school. I missed her terribly, long after my parents sold her house. Receiving her redirected mail felt like a blow. So many newsletters from Friends of the New Orleans Public Library! Since I loved books as much as Ma-Maw, I opened these up. Inside, I read about a partnership program, Start the Adventure in Reading (STAIR). They needed in-person volunteers to tutor second- and third-graders in reading.

Before I knew it, I was cracking open vocabulary books twice a week with a kid named Harper. When I wasn’t tutoring, I was lesson planning, going over Harper’s writing journal, and scouring shelves for more early reader books. This got me thinking about literacy in New Orleans. 39% of high school students my age have the reading level of a 5 th grader—or worse. Harper lived in a part of town that didn’t even have bookstores. Would she keep up her reading once the tutoring was over, despite the odds? I also thought about representation and accessibility. If Harper had more books about people like her, and if those books were all over the place, and easy to take home, would things change?

Due to this newfound interest in advocating for literacy, I decided to build a Free Little Library (FLL). To do so, I needed help. That spring, I founded a school club, Reading the World, and convinced 8 members to join. Together, we dismantled one of Ma-Maw’s kitchen cabinets and incorporated other used materials to build an upcycled stand that could fit 20 books.

Next, we got in touch with the program Read for Color, which helps make BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other diverse and marginalized voices heard. I believe their initiative parallels our own, which is to provide a diversity of voices through language itself. Our FLL features books in Cajun French and Creole and works in translation. With permission, we installed the FLL outside Ma-Maw’s old home. For its inauguration, our club invited the local organizations Youth Empowerment Project, One Book One New Orleans, and Read in Color. We plan to collaborate with these groups next year.

Now a sophomore, I’ve continued literacy advocacy by volunteering at Alliance Française events. This has given me new ideas about how to run Reading the World. I’ve added monthly book club events. Furthermore, every club member tutors a STAIR student. Finally, we’ll visit local senior homes at Thanksgiving and Christmas and read to the residents.

Ma-Maw would be happy to hear I won the L’Union Française’s Prix d’Excellence this year. She’d be even more thrilled to see how I’ve shared her love of reading with my community. Now I understand noblesse oblige : if you believe you are someone of noble character, then you must act accordingly. This NHS motto was easy for Ma-Maw to follow. She gave everything and led by example. I plan to follow in her footsteps. It would be an immense honor to do so through the National Honor Society.

NHS Essay Example, Dissected

This National Honor Society essay succeeds for many reasons. First, the student structures her essay around the theme of language and literacy. (Perhaps she also captains her softball team and volunteers for the Red Cross. But the student has correctly judged that these elements would distract from her story.) Rather than list her achievements and service, the student builds every element into a journey. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. It shows how the student evolved to be someone who wants to make a difference. The ending completes the story by circling back to the beginning, through the idea of “noblesse oblige.” The student also manages to state clearly her thesis: she deserves acceptance into the National Honor Society.

This student’s story also centers around an emotional current, that of the student’s grandmother. The reader wants to invest in the story more because of this emotional aspect. Literacy is clearly not a random activity, but a meaningful one for the student. Including a role model allows the student to avoid bragging by transferring her praise to her grandmother.

Finally, the tone of the essay is formal (“It would be an immense honor”). Meanwhile, the unique voice of the student comes through (“We both went to shovel up the last slice of pie”). She accurately cites the names of the organizations she’s involved with and uses specificity (such as her grandmother’s kitchen cabinets) to draw the reader in.

Then have a member of your family, your teacher, or a professional editor to check it again for mistakes you can spot by using automatic spell correctors. A crown is different from a crowd but it's hard for the spell checker to spot what you are trying to say, so be extra careful. National Honor Society eligibility requirements

Before we get into the actual process of joining the NHS, it’s important to note that there are specific eligibility requirements students must meet in order to join. While these specific prerequisites typically vary by school, here are the minimum eligibility requirements for every chapter:

Scholarship

Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 85, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale), or something of equivalent excellence. Individual schools may require a higher minimum GPA for their NHS members.

Students must voluntarily contribute or volunteer within their school or community, without compensation. Remember, individual chapters and schools have different volunteer hour requirements. We recommend checking what those for your preferred chapter are.

The NHS prefers students with demonstrated leadership abilities who enjoy working with others. Students can demonstrate their leadership skills through a wide range of school, extracurricular, and work activities.

NHS members should be honest, reliable, and respect others. They should also enjoy collaborative work and avoid getting in trouble.

However, keep in mind that simply meeting your school’s eligibility requirements does not necessarily mean admittance into the NHS. As with many competitive organizations, there’s an application process. So, how exactly can you apply? Let’s take a look.

Applying to NHS

The truth is that there’s no one, single way to apply to the NHS. Just as different chapters have different eligibility requirements, they also have unique application and selection processes . 

With that said, though, we can still cover the general process for you. While it will certainly differ slightly for each chapter, here’s a general outline of how to apply to the NHS:

1. Find out if your school has an NHS chapter

Your first step to joining the NHS should be to determine whether or not your school has a NHS chapter of its own. We recommend using this helpful NHS chapter finder . Simply type in your school’s name, city, state, and zip code, and you’ll have the answer to your question. Alternatively, you can ask relevant school staff members if they know whether a chapter is available at your school.

However, the process of finding a chapter is not so easy for everyone. What should you do if you’re a homeschooler? What  if your school does not have an NHS chapter to join? Let’s see.

What if I’m a homeschooler?

Unfortunately, homeschoolers are not eligible to join the NHS unless enrolled part-time in a nearby school with an NHS chapter.

Start your own NHS chapter

If your school does not have an NHS chapter of its own, you can always try to start one! Your first step in doing so should be to reach out to your school principal. As they may inquire about why you wish to do so, consider preparing some reasons for why an NHS chapter could be beneficial to your school. If they do end up deciding to follow through and create a chapter, they should be sure to read over these important eligibility requirements to do so.

2. Figure out the application process

Once you’ve either joined your school chapter or helped form one of your own, it’s time to figure out the application process. Be sure to ask your relevant school NHS officials (1) the eligibility requirements, (2) what materials you should submit, and (3) the application process and deadline.

3. Complete and submit application requirements

If you meet your school NHS eligibility requirements, all that’s left to do is to complete and submit the required application materials! Typically, these may include submitting an essay, your transcripts, and/or a resume. Some schools may also choose to interview NHS applicants to see if they’d be a good fit for the organization. 

And that’s all ! After you’ve submitted all the necessary materials (on or before the deadline), all that’s left to do is to wait for admission news. We hope you get in, and make the most of your time there.

Re-applying

If you are denied to the NHS for any reason, we encourage you not to be discouraged. The NHS is a quite competitive organization, with chapters receiving many applications from students each year. Further, re-applying is also an option.

Before you re-apply, we would recommend considering why your admission may have been denied. Perhaps you didn’t have enough community service errors, or your essay didn’t fit the circumstances. Either way, you can choose to talk with a guidance counselor or advisor and get their feedback on why you may have been denied. While you likely won’t get an explanation from the NHS itself, talking with someone may help you understand what you can improve for the next application cycle. There are many extracurricular activities in high school that can boost your academic and personal growth, but none are as comprehensive as the National Honor Society. With over one million students participating, the National Honor Society (aka NHS) is a great extracurricular that promotes leadership, service, character, and scholarship in all high school members. Here’s what you should know about the NHS, including the requirements, benefits, and how you can become a member. 

What is the National Honor Society?

Founded in 1921 by an association of principals, the National Honor Society has grown into a reputable leadership and educational group with chapters at high schools in all 50 states, US territories, and many other countries around the world. Its purpose is to elevate students’—and by extension, schools’—academic, community, and leadership activities, benefiting both colleges and high school students.

Why should I consider joining?

There are many benefits to being an active member of NHS, both nationally and in your local chapter. National benefits include conferences and summits, which are valuable networking events; scholarship opportunities; admission tips (as well as the added bonus of having NHS on your academic résumé !); college and financial aid planning resources, including webinars and step-by-step guides on the NHS website; and service projects to boost your volunteer hours. Many schools also take advantage of NHS locally by offering volunteer opportunities in the area and hosting banquets and award ceremonies at school for a variety of extracurricular activities.

Once you become a member of NHS, you’ll get to participate in your high school’s induction ceremony and can become involved in the chapter meetings if they’re held at your school. All the while, NHS members have a certain amount of volunteer hours they need to fill for continued membership. Note that during the pandemic, volunteer requirements and chapter meetings may be waived or postponed for public safety reasons.

Scholarship opportunities

Not only does having NHS improve your high school résumé, but it can also make you eligible for more scholarships. In 2021, over $2 million was awarded to NHS members across the country. Each year, one national winner wins $25,000, 24 national finalists each win $5,625, and 575 national semifinalists each win $3,200. That’s a total of 600 scholarships that you’ll be eligible to win as a NHS member!

The NHS on college applications

As previously stated, NHS looks great on your résumé—but many, many students are a part of this prestigious organization. That’s why it’s imperative that you embrace your membership to the fullest in order to stand out on your college applications . Try to join early in your high school career, become an officer, or record the most service hours than anyone in your school. The time and commitment you put into NHS will determine how well your college application will be received.

NHS eligibility requirements

High school students in grades nine through 12 with a minimum GPA of 3.0 are eligible for NHS membership. There are no membership fees, but students are required to maintain this GPA during their membership duration. Note that every local chapter may have different requirements concerning activities and who can apply age-wise. 

Applying to the NHS

There’s no clear-cut way to get into the National Honor Society, but all members should embody the four pillars of membership. The core values that are reviewed when you submit your application to become an NHS member are scholarship, service, leadership, and character. 

• Scholarship : Students are required to have a 3.0 GPA and be able to maintain it. This is the first and main qualification.
• Service : Advisors are looking for altruistic students who enjoy serving others in their community with volunteer service.
• Leadership : The NHS values students who demonstrate leadership in high school . Some ways to show leadership skills, like problem-solving and resourcefulness, include being a team captain, participating in student council, and being an active member in group projects.
• Character : NHS members demonstrate good character, and advisors look for that in new applicants. Taking the high road, being responsible, and acting appropriately are all ways one can demonstrate good character.

You should also research your school’s chapter and find the exact values your local advisors are looking for. If your school doesn’t have a chapter, then research a chapter at a nearby school to get involved. Finding a teacher to nominate you will also improve your chances of getting in. Teacher recommendations can boost your application, as you have a trusted person advocating on your behalf. Finally, try to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA, actively volunteer in your community , take academic courses and standardized tests seriously, participate in school activities, and be a disciplined moral citizen.

Open to students in NHS, National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), and the National Association of Student Councils, Leadership Experience and Development (LEAD) conferences are held several times a year on weekends in varying cities across the country. Who Can Become a Member of the National Honor Society?

First of all, it is worth noting that membership in the National Honor Society (NHS) is determined at the local level. Before you find out if you can become a member, you’ll need to locate your local chapter of the NHS. This can be done with a quick search on their Chapter Finder online, or by talking with a teacher or guidance counselor.

If your school does not currently have a local NHS chapter, you can talk with your principal or an advisor about founding one. Though students are not allowed to found chapters themselves, it is a simple process and one that most administrators can navigate easily. To apply, your school will need to appoint a faculty adviser and a five-member faculty council, fill out an application form, and pay an annual membership fee of $385. All public and accredited private schools are eligible to establish a local NHS chapter, and all students in grades 10-12 who meet the minimum GPA requirements at these schools are welcome to apply. Unfortunately, at this time, homeschooled students are not able to apply, though part-time students may be eligible if permitted by the bylaws of their local chapter.

Is There Any Reason That a Qualified Student Should Not Apply?

Like any other extracurricular, the National Honor Society requires time and commitment from all of its members. You will be asked to attend regular meetings, and you must participate in chapter and individual service projects. You should check the obligations of your local chapter before making the commitment if you aren’t sure you will have the time or energy to participate.

How Am I Evaluated for Membership?

Once you have located your local NHS chapter, you will need to review their membership requirements. Each local chapter sets forth their own unique qualification requirements which must be published and available for review. Although the exact requirements for membership vary by local chapter, all are based on the same four pillars of NHS, detailed below:

1. Scholarship

National guidelines require you to be in grades 10-12 and maintain a cumulative GPA of 85 or higher in order to qualify. This is a B average or a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Though this is the national minimum, many local chapters establish higher standards, so you will need to check the requirements of your local chapter to see if your GPA qualifies you.

If your GPA does meet the minimum standard as defined by your local chapter, you will have the opportunity to complete a form detailing your accomplishments in the other three pillars, listed below.    

Part of your application will ask you to detail your experiences in volunteer work, or other uncompensated, voluntary contributions to your school or community. Some local chapters will require you to have served a specific number of community service hours in order to qualify.  These hours could be spent organizing clothing or food drives, participating in clean up days on campus, or voluntarily tutoring younger students.

Keep in mind, though, that service hours aren’t something you should be rushing through just to accumulate them as quickly as possible. You should choose service activities with value to you. For more on this, check out the advice in “Do I Need Community Service For My College Application?”

3. Leadership

You will also be evaluated for your leadership skills. In this area, you should highlight your experiences taking leadership roles in school and community activities. This could include things like being a team captain, organizing a youth group, or being a part of student government. NHS specifically seeks student leaders who are “ resourceful, good problem solvers, and idea contributors.

4. Character

Finally, to gain membership to NHS, you will need to prove that you’re cooperative, responsible, reliable and honest. You should have a clean disciplinary record and show respect and courtesy to those around you.

Some chapters of NHS might require a written recommendation to vouch for your character. If you need a written recommendation, make sure to choose a teacher who has taught you in a core subject and has known you well for an extended period of time. Meet with the teacher ahead of time to discuss your goals for the application and to talk about why you feel you are qualified to become a member.

If you meet the minimum GPA requirements for your local chapter, the faculty council will meet to evaluate your candidacy based on your application. They will review each of the characteristics outlined above, and you may be accepted for membership by a majority vote of the five members.

What Happens if I Am Denied Membership?

If you are denied membership, you may appeal the decision at the local level, but the national NHS organization does not review individual appeals. You may also reapply another year. A rejection of your NHS application does not appear on your transcript or any of your college application materials.

What Happens if I Am Accepted?

If you are accepted to the National Honor Society, you will be invited to an induction ceremony with the rest of the newly accepted members of your local NHS chapter. These induction ceremonies are typically public events as the NHS endeavors to inspire others through them. Your parents will be invited, and you can usually invite anyone else who might be interested.

Though the national office does not dictate a specific format or script for local induction ceremonies, they do dictate that such ceremonies must be “appropriate and impressive”. They also offer a number of ideas and sample programs which can reviewed in their handbook available here with an NHS account .

In general, the induction ceremony usually includes:

• A procession or special entrance by inductees
• Invocation or welcome from the adviser, principal, or chapter president
• National Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance
• Guest Speaker
• Review of criteria for membership
• Honor Society Pledge
• Closing remarks

Many ceremonies also include a candle lighting or other symbolic presentation. Even if you have been accepted in NHS, you are not considered an official member until you have been inducted, signed into your local chapter’s registration, and taken the NHS Pledge.

As a member of the NHS, you’ll need to attend chapter meetings and participate in service projects, both as a group and as an individual. Though it can sometimes be hard initially to come up with new service projects and ideas, the NHS national website maintains a searchable National Student Project Database and a guide to Community Service Idea Starters .

When you begin a new service project, whether as a group or on your own, you should add your project to the database. You never know when others might want to join you, and your ideas could inspire other people, too!

The National Honor Society is an American organization with chapters in high schools in all 50 states, several U.S. territories, and Canada. The NHS allows high school students with a dedication to the society's core values - scholarship, leadership, service, and character - to receive recognition, participate in volunteer activities, apply for college scholarships, and more.

Embodying NHS Values

• Members of National Honor Society must have a GPA of 3.5 or higher on the 4.0 scale. On a 5.0 scale, this would be at least a 4.375 and 5.25 on a 6.0 scale. On a letter grade scale, this would be at least a B+ and 90% or higher grade average on a 100 point scale.
• Start working on your grades early in high school. If you start off with a low GPA you'll have to work extra hard to pull it up in the following semesters. Take your studies and homework seriously.
• If you're struggling with a particular subject, consider hiring a tutor or asking a friend in class to help you out. Most people do not excel equally well in all subjects. You might be an excellent chemistry student but struggle remembering dates for history class, for example.

• Practice good study skills. Flashcards, memorization, and practice tests and quizzes are all great means to prepare for an exam. If your teacher offers any optional after school review sessions, always attend even if you feel confident about your skill set.

• Most bookstores, as well as Amazon, sell up to date study guides for most standardized tests. Many colleges and organizations like Kaplan offer prep courses, which can be taken in person or online. If you're serious about NHS membership, consider asking your parents if you can enroll in one of these courses.
• Remember, you can retake most standardized tests if you do not like your score the first time.

• Get involved in your school. Join a club that speaks to your passions and go for a leadership role. You might not be able to be say, president, right away but you can always take a smaller position as a board member or treasurer. Consider running for student council. • You can also get involved outside of school. If you play sports, being the captain of your hockey or soccer team can convey leadership skills. Consider volunteering to coach little league, taking on the role of coach to kids younger than yourself. If you're involved in any other type of community, you can try to be a leader there as well. Say you take art lessons at the community art center. See if they need volunteers to tutor younger students.

• There are many ways to volunteer. You should pick a cause you feel passionate about as you'll be more motivated to stick your service out. Love animals? Work for your local Humane Society. Interested in politics? Try doing campaign work for a cause you support. Big reader? Ask your local library if they need assistance.
• If you're struggling to find volunteer opportunities, go to a local community center, church, hospital, or coffee shop. People often leave flyers in these kinds of establishments trying to recruit volunteers. You can also ask the school counselor or principal of your school. He or she might be in contact with a variety of local organizations seeking out student workers.

Applying for NHS

• Remember that individual chapters differ in their precise rules. Some require you to complete an application to even be considered for membership, while others don't require you to apply until after you've been singled out as eligible. When in doubt, always consult your local chapter for precise instructions.

• Include all the experience you have related to NHS's core values: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. Include things like work on school clubs, experience with sports, volunteer work, after school jobs, and any awards or achievements.
• Many chapters of NHS require an essay as part of the membership application. The essay might be a broad overview of your qualifications or it might ask a specific question, like "If you had to have dinner with anyone living or dead who would you pick?" Spend a lot of time on your essay. Write a couple of drafts and have a friend or family member look it over for you.
• If you are not granted membership, you have the right to appeal the council's decision. However, appeals must be made to the local chapter itself - state and national NHS agencies do not hear membership appeals. Do not be discouraged. Continue your service activities and leadership activities and maintain your good GPA. You can always apply again next year.

• Students cannot apply to enter the NHS at the national level, via the organization's website or any other means. All admissions to the NHS are handled at the local level - you must apply to your high school's NHS chapter and no other. • If your school doesn't have an NHS chapter, all is not lost. Try asking your principal, academic adviser, or teacher to establish an NHS chapter at your school. I believe that our effort is not worthless. In future, I want to do more to victims from bullying, violence and crimes.

Three evenings a week I spend in the swimming pool training. I have been practicing jumping into the water since I was seven years old. I don’t see my future connected with professional sport. I don’t dream of becoming an Olympic champion. But I believe that physical training strengthens not only body but character, too. Every time when you have to overcome pain, fatigue, and laziness, you become a stronger person. All the medals and diplomas I have make me believe that when I want something, I achieve it.

NHS England to review cutting compulsory training for doctors

Exclusive: Study will be aimed at improving medics’ working lives by reducing frequency and repetition of courses

The amount of time doctors have to spend doing compulsory training will be cut as part of an NHS drive to improve medics’ working lives, the Guardian can reveal.

Concern that doctors have too heavy a burden of mandatory training has prompted NHS England to commission a review, which it is expected to announce imminently.

It is aimed at reducing the need for doctors to undertake what for some can be up to as many as 33 sessions of training every year, depending on what stage of their career they are at. Each lasts between 30 minutes and several hours and together take about a day to complete.

NHS bosses have briefed medical groups and health service care providers on the plan, which they hope will address one of the many frustrations that some doctors – especially recently qualified doctors – have about working in the service, alongside pay, constant pressure and poor working environments.

Doctors in England have to undertake 11 types of training every year, in subjects such as safeguarding, conflict resolution, fire safety, and equality, diversity and human rights.

One idea under consideration is a change that would allow medics to take the 11 courses over the course of two years instead, saving them half a day a year in training.

However, junior doctors in the early years of their career can be obliged to repeat all 11 sessions two or even three times within a year as they go through “rotations” at different hospitals.

The review will look into easing that workload by having one England-wide system of training, to spare young medics from doing all 11 modules every time they join a different trust.

Prof Sir Stephen Powis, NHS England’s national medical director, confirmed the review. “While statutory and mandatory training provides NHS staff with core knowledge and skills that support safe and effective working, we know that needing to repeat the same training courses every year isn’t the best use of a clinician’s time. So it’s right that we look to find ways to cut back on this, while still considering our legal obligations,” he said.

“Cutting red tape and ensuring this type of training is only carried out when necessary – for example, when junior doctors move between hospitals – will not only be better for our staff, who will spend less time worrying about training to adhere to legal requirements, but will also benefit patients by freeing up clinicians’ time for care and treatment.

The review is one of a series of measures NHS England is set to unveil intended to improve the working lives of its 1.4 million-strong workforce, in an attempt to improve recruitment and staff retention.

The Times reported that one of the ideas under consideration to free up doctors’ time was to allow people to sign themselves off work for minor illnesses using an automated online triage scheme.

The British Medical Association, which is a trade union and professional body for doctors, declined to comment because it did not have enough details of NHS England’s plans.
