Peradeniya Botanical Garden in Sri Lanka

Peradeniya Botanical Garden is the largest and one of the most famous botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. Also, it is known to be the oldest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. The Peradeniya Botanical Garden is established across 146 acres (59 hectares) of land. It is bound by the Mahaweli River, which is known to be the longest river in Sri Lanka. This botanical garden displays around 4000 different types of plant species that are endemic, indigenous, or non-indigenous to Sri Lanka. The vibrantly colored flower species here are sure to please your eyes and mind at a glance.

This garden is rich in tropical woody plants. There are shady lanes with palm trees alongside. Ponds with a variety of freshwater fish and freshwater aquatic plants can be found on the garden grounds. Also, there are huge flowering trees like Robarosia (Rosy Trumpet Trees) ( Tabebuia rosea),  which bloom in certain seasons of the year. The middle garden area is rich in a variety of ornamental plants. And there are some areas in the garden grounds where huge woody plants are grown, with huge creepers wrapped around their trunks, giving the impression of walking through a mini forest. Not only that, but there are also arches and huts built in the garden area, which are covered with some aesthetic flowering plants that never fail to please your eyes.

If you visit this place, you must not forget to check out the orchid house. It is a well-known fact that there are around 300 different species of orchids in this orchid house in the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. Fern and orchid houses are there, where you can see different species of them. Particularly noteworthy are the various colors and shapes of orchid flower species. It is amazing to see and correlate the flower shapes to the things you know. For example, there are orchid flowers that have the exact structure of a Kandyan dancer, which is a marvelous creation of nature. There is also a hanging bridge inside the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. Steel cables have been used in the construction of this bridge. Plant identification and information service

But you have to get some entry appointments in order to get into the National Herbarium on the garden premises.

Opening hours, parking facilities, and other facilities

Opening hours for the public are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on all seven days. But the ticket counter is closed by 5:00 p.m. The ticket prices and other details can be obtained from the Royal Botanic Gardens Government Information Center.

Free parking facilities are provided near the entrance to the botanical garden. The staff here is very friendly and supportive. Therefore, you can reach out to them for any general information you want.

There are certain facilities provided to help you buy some varieties of plants of interest connected to the Botanical Garden. You can get further information about that from their information centers.

There are signboards and direction boards placed in every lane you take, making it very easy for you to find the directions to your favorite area even without a tour guide. Many locals as well as tourists claim that this is a highlight of their tours to Kandy.

There are benches and restrooms in the garden area where you can rest in between walks. Also, there are plenty of spaces where you can capture some beautiful photographs.

However, this place is pretty crowded with locals during the weekdays and on public holidays.

Peradeniya Botanical Garden History

Initially, before turning into a botanical garden, this was a royal garden that was reserved for the kings who ruled the kingdom of Kandyan in the 14 th  century. It has been a royal garden since the period 1978–1798. In 1821, the establishment and conversion of this garden to a botanical garden took place for the purpose of carrying out experiments on finding economically, commercially, and environmentally important plant species. First, they introduced coffee trees and tea plants into this garden. Also, initially, it was used for horticultural purposes. Also, they tested the cultivation of rubber crops on this land, which later became the main export-related crop in Sri Lanka. Considering all of these facts, we can conclude that the Peradeniya Botanical Garden has served as a testing ground for some economically important crops not only today but also in the past.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens is a well-known place not only among locals but also among foreigners because of the nice and pleasant climate here. The annual rainfall here is around 1466 mm. There are around 278 rainfall days in this area. Among them, the highest rainfall is in October, and the lowest rainfall is in January. December is the most humid month of all in this area. June is the month that has the most sunshine in Peradeniya. The best time to visit the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is from April to July. because it is the best time of year for flowers and greenery in comparison to the other months of the year. Surely, you will not feel like walking out of the garden if you go in that season.

The temperature fluctuation in this area, where the Peradeniya Botanical Garden is located, throughout the year can be between 28 and 19. The specialty is that you can enjoy a visit to the Peradeniya Botanical Garden on any day of the year, regardless of the weather, but my suggestion is that the best days would be sunny days in Peradeniya.

Royal Botanic Gardens Peradeniya

The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya was established in 1821, six years after the final occupation of the Kandyan Kingdom by the English. The site is less than 5.5 Km from Kandy on the Colombo Road, and occupies a loop of the river Mahaweli, which surrounds it on all sides except the south, where it is bounded by the main road. The area 61.25 ha in extent, is about 1550ft from sea level. More than 4000 species of plants including woody trees, Palms, Ferns, Orchids and shrubs currently present within the gardens.

Placement of the garden

Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya are about 5.5 km to the west of the city of Kandy in the Central Province of Sri Lanka. In 2016, the garden was visited by 1.2 million locals and 400,000 foreign visitors.It is near the Mahaweli River (The longest river in Sri Lanka). It is renowned for its collection of orchids. The garden includes more than 4000 species of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Attached to it is the "National Herbarium of Sri Lanka".

The total area of the botanical garden is 147 acres (0.59 km2), at 460 meters above sea level, and with a 200-day annual rainfall. It is managed by the Department of National Botanic Gardens, Sri Lanka. The history of the Royal Botanic Gardens dates as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu iii ascended the throne and kept court at Peradeniya near Mahaweli Ganga. Later, in the reign of King Kirti Sri from 1747 to 1780 this was made a Royal Garden and from 1780— 1798 King Rajadhi Rajasirighe resided therein, where a temporary residence was erected for him. A vihare and dagoba were built in the reign of King Wimala Dharma which was improved by King Rajadhi Rajasinghe. The vihare and dagoba were destroyed by the English when they occupied Kandy. The famous historical battle of Gannoruwa between Rajasinghe ii and the Portuguese was fought on the Northern side of the river. A priest resided here till the Gardens were formed by Mr. Alexandar Moon in 1821 six years after the final conquest of the Kandyan Kingdom. In 1810 under the advice of Sir Joseph Banks a garden named Kew was opened in Slave island and Mr. William Kerr was appointed as its Superintendent. In 1813 the garden was moved to Kalutara for the reception of economic plants which could be cultivated there on a larger scale than was possible at Slave Island. Kerr died in 1814 and under the rule of his successor Mr. Alexander Moon this Garden was finally moved to Peradeniya in 1821 as it was found to be favourable and better adapted for the proposed Botanic establishment. The transfer of exotics from the Kalutara Garden was made by successive Superintendents at least up to 1843. During Moon’s superintendence the opening of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, can be said to have commenced though at first only the South West portion of the Gardens was cleared and opened and it was mostly planted with cinnamon and coffee. Moon published his Catalogue of Ceylon Plants” in 1824 in which was given the Botanical and native names of 1,127 plants, indigenous to the island. After the appointment of Mr. George Gardner in 1844 the institution started upon its more active independent and useful existence that it has since maintained. Only 40 acres of the 147 acres were in cultivation when Gardner took charge and the chief use made of the land was to grow jak, coconuts and vegetables for sale by the Government Agent in Kandy. Gardner effected many important improvements in the condition of the Gardens but his chief work was the exploration of the country for the collection and preparation of its flora. He died at Nuwara Eliya in 1849 and was succeeded by Dr. Thwaites who for over 30 years maintained the Gardens in a high state of efficiency, added largely to our knowledge of the flora of the Colony and gave the establishment its world-wide reputation. Botanic Gardens at Hakgala was established in 1861 for introduction of Cinchona into the island and in 1876 Gampaha (Henarathgoda) botanic garden was started for the introduction of Rubber. Thwaites was succeeded by Dr. Henry Trimen, under whose rule and capable management the beauty and usefulness of the Gardens were very considerably advanced. He established the Museum of Economic Botany, opened branch Gardens at Badulla and Anuradhapura and began the publication of his work, “The Flora of Ceylon” which however was finished by Sir Joseph D. Hooker after Trimen’s death in 1896. In 1896 Trimen was succeeded by Dr. J.C. Willis and from that date a new extension of scientific work took place. In the early years work was mainly directed towards the introduction and acclimatization of useful and ornamental plants but in later years activities developed towards Economic botany and Agriculture and led to the development of the Department of Agriculture in 1912. Mr. HF, Macmillan who was appointed Curator in 1895, was made the Superintendent of Botanic Gardens in 1912 and Mr. T.H. Parsons the Curator in 1914. During Macmillan’s superintendence the Gardens were improved and extended and his great work “A Hand Book of Tropical Planting and Gardening” was published. Macmillan retired in 1925 and Mr. T.H. Parsons continued as Curator till 1945. Mr. D.M.A. Jayaweera who was appointed as the Superintendent in 1945 contributed a lot to our knowledge on medicinal plants and orchids of Sri Lanka. Mr. D.T. Ekanayake who became the Superintendent in 1971 pioneered the floriculture in Sri Lanka. Mr. D.B. Sumithraarachchi, as the director National Botanic Gardens improved the condition of the botanic gardens tremendously and conducted many useful taxonomic work until leaving the gardens in 1998. Work on the establishment of a new botanic gardens at Mirijjawila (near Hambantota) was started in 2006 and that is the first botanic gardens initiated after independence. That 300-acre garden will be the largest in Sri Lanka specializing on the conservation of dry and arid zone plants. Another Botanic garden was initiated at llukowita, Avissawella for the ex-situ conservation of wet zone flora. Plans are underway to establish 5 more botanic gardens before 2016. Today, the Botanic Gardens are responsible for the management and development of Botanic Gardens, National Herbarium, Medicinal Plant Gardens, Gardens attached to the Official residences and Offices of His Excellency the President, The Hon. Prime Minister, Commonwealth War Cemeteries, the Sacred Bo Tree at Anuradhapura and other Historic Trees of Sri Lanka.

• Develop technologies related to exploitation of lesser known and under-utilized plants.

PERADENIYa BotanicAL Gardens

This garden was established in 1821 for the receipt and experimentation of plants introduced for economic and environmental development. Currently the garden is engaged in activities related to authentication, ethno-botany, floriculture and primarily ex-situ conservation of plants. However its history dates back to the 14th century when Royalty ruled the central highlands of Sri Lanka. It was a Royal Gardens from 1780 – 1798.

The gardens are home to a large and diverse variety of plants especially including endemics and species extinct in the wild. This 60 ha land at an elevation of 460 mt. above sea level in Peradeniya includes 4000 plant species. The gardens occupy a horse- shoes shapes peninsula around which flows the chief and longest river of Sri Lanka the Mahawali River.

The scenic splendor of the garden is highlighted by flourishing growth of huge tropical trees in its arboretum, flower garden with a colourful ribbon border and the Mahawali River that flows around its fringes. Prime attractions within the gardens frequented by visitor include the Orchid House with more than 300 varieties of exquisite Orchids blooming in profusion.

The memorial collection consists of trees planted by eminent persons including heads of states, state guests, astronauts and royalty during their official visits to the gardens. The Palm collection is among the best in Asia with about 220 species. Other attractions are the great lawn, spice gardens, Palm avenues, plant house and Cacti display, lake and flowering trees.

These gardens receive considerable rainfall both during the South West and North East monsoons and hence are lush and verdant throughout the year. Three seasons are earmarked as April to June, August to September and December when most visitors fill the gardens and flowering is at its peak.

The History of the Garden

The name itself depicts that the garden of Peradeniya has a history to talk about. The longest river in Sri Lanka-Mahaweli is on three sides of the park, which can be a reason for the Royals to attract to this land in the gone days. Thus, it was first grown in 1371 of the 14 th Century as a Kandyan Queen’s garden. The queen used the well-maintained premises for her leisure. Subsequently, in the 18 th Century, Peradeniya botanical gardens served as a property of King Wickramabahu III as his Royal garden.

However, in 1843 this Peradeniya garden was established officially as a Botanical Garden under the British Colonisation . It is also said that there has been a temple in the park which was destroyed by the British. However, there is no trace to prove that on the premises. Also, it is said that many plants were brought from the Kew garden in London. (Kew Royal Botanical Gardens in London played a significant role in coordinating botanical research in other parks worldwide, especially in tropical countries)

Later during the second world war, in the 1900s, the premises have been used as army forces’ headquarters for the Southeastern region. But it has been only for a brief period.

The Management of the Park

Afterward, the superintendents took control and the management of the park, who made arrangements to care for the garden’s flora and maintain the beds and pathways. Later it was taken over by the Department of agriculture in 1912 to maintain. Today the management of the Royal Botanical Garden of Peradeniya is in the hands of its division of National Botanic Gardens. The National Herbarium of Sri Lanka is also hand in hand by assisting the worthy cause.

Currently, there are more than 4000 species of Flora in the garden. That includes flowering plants, medicinal herbs, and plants of spices as well.  Some of the species are exclusive to Sri Lanka in the whole Asian region. There are many indigenous plants to Sri Lanka and several other species of foreign plants to display.

Some Special Sections in the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya

There are some unique places which are displaying some special plants in the Garden. Below are some of them yet there are many other sections of such unique plant arrangements in the garden.

Bamboo Forest

There is an area in the gardens which is separate, especially for the bamboo trees. Thus, it is known as the bamboo forest in the Peradeniya Gardens. There are hundreds of bamboo trees, and some of them might even be older than you. Still, they stand majestically, in good condition, owing to the well-maintenance of the authorities.

There is also an artificial lake around the center of the park. It is in place in order to display the various water plants in the garden. You can spot the giant water lily and various other types of water plants in this lake.

Suspension Bridge

There is a suspension bridge in the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, leading to the tropical agriculture section at the Gannoruwa hill. The walk on this bridge is also exciting as it runs across the Mahaveli river and has a wooden floor. Also, at Gannoruwa, they do research cash crops such as spices, herbs, tea, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and rice.

Orchid Collection

The orchid house at the park is a place that is a ‘never to be missed’ location by any person who visits here. The Orchid House is a greenhouse that delivers the orchids’ appropriate temperature to grow healthy and safe. Moreover, tere is a massive collection of many types of orchid plants with flowers artistically arranged. It is located towards the end of the park thus; you have to walk a little along the park to see this beautiful orchid house with your naked eye.

Avenue of Palm Trees

There is an avenue of palm trees at the park’s beginning, which gives a perfect look for a massive park such as Peradeniya gardens. Several palm trees are standing on either side of a path, clean and neatly maintained by the authorities. It is a famous location for photo shooting among Sri Lankan people. These palm trees have been standing for many years along the road. It is a sight of remembrance for a person who visits the park more than one time.

Memorial Trees in the Park

It is a land of about 4 acres. This place’s specialty is that you can see an array of plants or trees planted by several public figures or dignitaries from around the world during their visit to Sri Lanka over the years. You can see the trees planted by many famous personals such as King George with Queen Mary, Henry of Persia, Prince of Whales, King Edward VII, Emperor of Austria, and Indira Gandhi, in this piece of land.

Especial Personalities Behind the Success of the Garden from its History

There are two persons who are famous in the history of Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.

Mr. George Gardner

He is a Scotsman who was a Superintendent of the Park. Mr. Gardner started his office in 1844.  He did an enormous service to the development of the park and its flora, and he is also famous for importing rubber first to Ceylon. Mr. Gardner died in 1849. A monument in the memory of this valued personality is there at the park premises.

Dr.George H.K. Thwaits

After Mr Gardner, the next best official who came to his position was Dr. Thwaits whose service was not second to that of Mr.Gardner.

He was a science and botany student. Dr. Thwaits served the garden for 30 years and died in 1882. His name is written in the garden’s history, for working to increase the value of the Peradeniya gardens.

Direction to Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens

Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens is located around 115 km away from Colombo. That is in the central province. It is about 5km from the garden to the main city of Kandy. The Botanical garden is also about 460m above sea level.

Operating Hours of the Garden

The garden is open for public visits from 8 a.m, till 5.30 p.m, on all seven days of the week. Within this period, any person can enter the garden and experience the marvel of this well-maintained greenery and flower beds in their naked eye.

Kandy to Botanical Garden Bus Timetable and the Cost

If you are using public transportation to arrive at this garden, there are bus services to the Royal Botanical Gardens operated by the Ceylon Transport Board. That is from various locations in Kandy. Those locations are the Goods shed bus stand, the Clock Tower bus stand, and the Sri Dalada Maligawa bus stand in Kandy. Moreover, all these bus rides take less than 35 minutes to the Gardens and cost less than LKR30 per pax. The buses are available from the morning till evening every 15-30 minutes.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit the Royal Botanical Garden, Kandy?

The visitors can buy tickets from the ticket counter, which is at the gate. The ticket prices vary based on the type of tourists. Below is the recent (2019) tariff, which could be slightly changed by the time of visit.

How Long Does it Take to Walk Through Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya?

The botanical garden in Peradeniya is spread over 147 acres of land, which is a relatively large amount of land. It is why the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya is popular as one of the most extensive botanical gardens in Sri Lanka. Once entered into this beautiful world of greenery and flowers, you don’t feel enough of walking along on the clean and well-maintained paths through the gardens.

Thus, it is recommended to save at least 2-3 hours to watch all the unique places by walking in the garden relaxingly and to lie a little on the grass patches under the vast vegetation.

Buggy Service and the Guides at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya

There is a buggy service for those who need to avoid walking. You have to request the service at the entry point to the park. There are buggies to accommodate groups containing a maximum of 6 persons or rides for couples separately. The buggy ride charges are per hour.

A visit to a Botanical Garden

When we entered the garden, my father purchased the tickets for us. As soon as I entered, I saw many beautiful trees and flowers. It was a very big botanical garden. The colourful butterflies were flying around the flowers. There was a pond. The small colourful fish were there.

There were many memorial trees. The birds, squirrels and monkeys were on the trees. My father carried me to the Orchid House and there were very beautiful orchids. I saw bamboo trees, iron wood trees, banyan trees, palm trees and medicinal plants.

We visited the Green House too. The cactus garden was another attractive place. There were a variety of cacti with sharp points. My mother advised me strictly not to touch the cacti. My father showed me the suspension bridge. The Mahaweli river was flowing under the bridge.

It was a pleasant journey. I like to visit the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens again.

Ultimate Guide to Hakgala Botanical Gardens

Located around 2000 m above sea level, Hakgala Botanic Gardens is the highest altitude garden in Sri Lanka. Staying behind only the Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens , it is the second largest garden in Sri Lanka. It spreads out 28 hectares in extent and home to over 10,000 different species of flora. The massive Hakgala Rock towers to a height of about 2,200m behind the gardens and the surrounding forest reserve. The garden faces the Uva Valley, with some splendid views of the Madulsima and the Namunukula range of mountains.

The Hakgala Garden becomes a flower paradise in April, during the Spring season in Nuwara Eliya . During that period, thousands of local and foreign visitors come to see the blooms.  Particularly, Hakgala Garden is reputed for the lovely rose and dahlia collections. You’ll find the climate of the gardens is cool and fresh, thus it is an ideal place for a day out in Nuwara Eliya city. Reportedly, around 500,000 people annually visit this beautiful garden.

History of the garden

Hakgala Garden was established by Dr. G. H. K Thwaites in 1861, as an experimental station and nursery for Cinchona. The original purpose was growing Cinchona, to extract the anti-malarial drug Quinine. The development of Hakgala Gardens as a botanic garden was initiated by Mr. William Nock in 1884. Subsequently, the garden was used to cultivate various plants including foreign and local trees, ferns, herbs, and flowers. 

Access to the garden

Hakgala Botanical Garden locates on the Nuwara Eliya- Badulla main road, 7 km from Nuwara Eliya city. You can reach there by bus, car or train. If you are using the Kandy-Ella train , you need to get off at Nanu Oya station. Then you need to travel around 13 km, bypassing Nuwara Eliya city to reach Hakgala Gardens.

Climate of the garden

The garden has a cool and refreshing environment because of altitude is 2,000 m above sea level. The temperature ranges between 16 °C to 30 °C during the year. From December to February, it has a cold climate while the warm climate persists from April to August. During the Southwest monsoon, strong winds blow across the gardens towards the Uva Valley. Between October to December, heavy downpours of rainfall are more frequent in the afternoon and evenings.

Lay out of the garden

The entire garden divides into different sections and dedicated to different plant species like flowering plants, ferns, cacti, and many more. Below is the detailed map of the garden showing each area.

Main entrance

The main entrance consists of the ticket counter and flower beds on the slope. The garden is elegantly landscaped to take the shape of several terraces. At the top terrace, there is a striking metal and pebble structures of the letters HAKGALA. This beautiful structure at the peak increases the visitor attraction at glance.

Then the main drive leads you to the garden and it is edged by mixed flower borders and edge plants. Well-maintained mixed flower borders are one of the unique features of the Hakgala Botanical Garden. These fine hedges are formed by different kinds of Azalea, Camellia, and several other flowering shrubs.

Bulb garden

The bulb garden was opened in 1924. It contains a collection of Lilium, Watsonia, Gladiolus, Agapanthus, and Zephyranthes. Many of the species have been introduced from Holland and Japan.

Ferns garden

Undoubtedly, one of the major attractions in the gardens is the Fernery. Shaded by tall trees, dark and misty Fern Garden is home to over 50 kinds of ferns. This is a collection of native hill country ferns. It acts as a refuge for many rare epiphytes, mosses, and lichens.

The distinct feature in the fernery is the wooly tree fern of Sri Lanka. It gives unique character to the fern garden. There are lots of tree ferns, that flourished throughout history. When fully grown, these tree ferns can attain a height of 30-40 feet.  Remember to have a look at the large woolly tree fern with a huge trunk over 30 ft in height. Its graceful fronds are 18 ft in diameter.

A distinctive feature of Fernery is the wonderful manner in which the natural springs use to enhance the beauty of the landscaped garden. These springs diverted to form ponds and rippling streams adorned by bridges. Since the fernery has a cool climate shaded by tall trees, Lichens and mosses grow all over the area. Certainly, this area is so cool and refreshing, thus visitors may not wish to say goodbye to it.

Flower gardens

The flower gardens display varieties of blooming flowers adding beauty to the gardens. You can see colorful blooms of Carnations and Poinsettias swaying in the wind. Moreover, many kinds of Fuchsia proudly display their drooping clusters of pretty flowers.  Enhancing the beauty of the gardens, there are varieties of salvia ranging from orange to deep purple.

Central pond

A footpath commences from the main drive and leads to the central area of the garden. There is a pond in which yellow water lilies are grown. Huge trees are planted around the central pond.

Ancient trees

Hakgala Garden has a great collection of ancient trees including conifers, cedars, cypresses, pines, and English oaks. Most of them have been introduced from foreign countries, but they have made their home in the garden now. You’ll see that these tall trees are over 100 years old.

Some of the interesting trees around the flower gardens are the Monterey Cypress from California, the camphor tree from China, The Queensland box tree from Australia, the Japanese silkworm Oak tree from Japan, and the southern Magnolia tree from Florida.

Dahlia collection

As same as Peradeniya Royal Botanical Garden is famous for its Orchid collection, Hakgala Garden is particularly famous for its beautiful Dahlias. There is no doubt, that lovely dahlias show the epitome of floral beauty with strikingly beautiful blossoms. Dahlias are eternally smiling flowers. When a flower blossoms, it can remain on the plant for nearly one week.  These lovely blooms make the visitors happy with their pretty appearance.

There are varieties of colorful dahlias with several exciting hues in the Hakgala Botanical Garden. You’ll find red, white, purple, yellow, and orange dahlias in the garden. Each plant has bunches of dahlias, creating wonderful photogenic scenery. Be ready with your camera, since there will be endless opportunities to capture the striking beauty of these flowers.

Rose garden

The rose garden was created in the 1960s, by importing the mother plants from England. One must not miss out on this rare and exotic collection of roses in Hakgala Garden. They are breathtakingly colorful and their sweet perfume lingers on the surrounding air. The vivid colors and sweet fragrances of lovely roses in the garden make the visitors spellbound. They can easily steal the heart of visitors.

Rose garden is established on a twin terraced land and contains over 100 varieties of roses. Some of them are quite rare to find in Sri Lanka.  Moreover, there are several modern bicolor rose varieties, which are strikingly beautiful. These bicolor varieties with two hues add a unique beauty to the rose garden.

Hakgala gardens put up the best display of r oses  during the spring festival in April. The process of bringing the rose garden to the epitome of beauty starts at the beginning of January. The careful planning and dedicated efforts by Hakgala Botanical Gardens staff make it a flower paradise in April. Roses start flowering on April 1, with the rose garden attaining full bloom by mid-April at the height of the Nuwara Eliya season.

Glass House

There are several glass houses that give home to many plants too tender to thrive in an open environment. They are carefully nurtured inside this house with optimum conditions to grow. It displays a collection of indoor plants including species of Begonias and many kinds of cacti and succulents. As well, you can see some beautiful hanging plants inside the glass house.

Agave collection

Agave is another wonderful plant collection in Hakgala Botanical Garden. With their thick, long, and prickly leaves growing in a rosette, these plants add a unique beauty to the garden.

Nock Memorial

This colorful Memorial was erected in 1910, for the memory of Mr. J. K. Nock. He was the curator of the gardens from 1903-1909. This memorial is dedicated to his outstanding work to develop the garden into a charming flower paradise. Currently, this summer house is a very popular venue for resting and enjoying a meal.

Best time to visit the garden

Right riming is important to witness the gorgeous blooms of Hakgala Botanical Garden. The best time to visit the gardens is from about mid-March to the end of April, popularly known as the Nuwara Eliya season. The garden becomes extremely pretty in this period.

There aren’t many flower blossoms for the rest of the year.  But the garden is very pleasant with lush greeneries and beautiful plants. If you are a nature lover, visiting this garden is worth it even in the low season .

Moreover, Hakgala Garden is an ideal spot for bird watching . There are many species of hill country birds that live in the surrounding forest reserve. Therefore, this is a must-visit place for bird watching enthusiasts.

The garden is opened 365 days of the year from 7.30 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. The ticket counter is open until 5.00 p.m.

To sum up, Hakgala Garden is one of the most picturesque and beautiful gardens in Sri Lanka. It welcomes all visitors with its pleasant and inviting setting. Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, it provides a beautiful oasis for holidaymakers.
