Personal Statement Example: Introduction

“I believe companies need to be employee-centred, as keeping them satisfied, motivated and personally engaged can create immense value for any organisation. Effective human resource management strategies are therefore crucial to business success. However, my intern experience at the Slater-Marshall accounting firm illustrated that HRM often fails to achieve these challenging goals. The reasons are two-fold. Foremost, many small and medium-sized companies have a misperception of recruitment, regarding it simply as a KPI tool instead of finding talents that match their development needs. As a result, time and resources are wasted on candidates who are not a good match for the company. Worse still, many HRBPs are not shrewd or experienced enough to identify the breadth of talent needed by their companies. HRM also loses its effectiveness when it fails to use proven physical and psychological means to provide a fair and encouraging working environment and subsequently incentivise employees.

First-hand experience of these kinds of issues triggered my curiosity regarding contemporary strategies used when empowering companies to employ a sound human resource management system. How can HRM lead to organisation change? How can I develop professional HRM techniques, release their full potential and create harmonious industrial relationships? The desire to equip myself with the relevant understanding and skills is the driving factor behind my application to this MSc Human Resources and Organisations (HRM Stream) programme at the University of Buckley.

This particular course resonates strongly with my career goal of helping traditional enterprises establish enhanced human resource management systems. Your programme offers a variety of opportunities that will aid me in developing a complete grasp of human resource management theory from the perspectives of corporate strategy, business analysis and organisational management. For instance, the Management of People in Global Companies course will afford me a transformative perspective on leadership. This knowledge will assist me significantly when transforming outdated models of human resource management in enterprises lacking advanced human resource awareness. 

Furthermore, the Business Strategy, Management and Analytics course will be of exceptional professional value thanks to its cross-disciplinary approach, which will offer me a solid grounding in the comprehensive understanding of management theory, theory of the firm, business strategy, accounting and finance. Professor Sara Blake’s research on organisational behaviour and leadership is incredibly inspiring and aligns perfectly with my goal of strengthening leadership in traditional businesses. I look forward to learning from her and contributing to future projects.”

Commentary and Analysis 

This is a long introduction!

This opening section has a strong sense of purpose, connection and opinion, which immediately gives the reader a firm idea of the writer’s experiences and opinions.  The writer also uses an excellent range of specialist vocabulary in this example and connects their significant experiences with the course. In addition, the applicant is already making explicit links between the course and their ambitions.

The writer then identifies specific modules and outlines how they will aid their academic and professional advancement. Not only does this connect the writer’s goals with the course content, but it also shows that the applicant understands the course and has researched the details well. The reference to a specific professor from within the faculty and the connection between the writer’s research ambitions and the opportunities presented by the university are compelling. The writer creates a clear link between their suitability for the course and the content on offer.

Personal Statement Example: Academic Background

“Majoring in Accounting and Finance as an undergraduate, my dedication to my studies earned me several awards and ranked me top among my peers. Excelling in courses such as Theory of Firm , Introduction to Managerial Accounting and Business Law , I acquired a spectrum of theoretical understandings which underpin HRM. I have independently investigated the organisational role of HRM by exploring Dave Ulrich’s HR model and the six segments of HR management, examining their adoption by companies of different scales. I have learnt that the role of HRM is to identify the kinds of human resources needed by the companies and allocate those resources wisely to maximise productivity and profitability. Consequently, I regard HRM as a people-oriented sector. This makes understanding human behaviours and psychology in the workplace particularly important for industry practitioners.

Studying on the Introduction to Managerial Accounting course, I was informed that how money is distributed within an organisation is crucial since it determines whether employees’ incentives can be fully realised. Thus, establishing a sound salary and welfare system is of great importance. Different people and contrasting organisations have various demands, but a successful compensation and welfare system balances these two demands and activates the organisation’s motivation. My most significant gain from this course is that many aspects of HRM, including setting different KPIs, performance monitoring and well-being management, are based on developing an accurate understanding of employee behaviour patterns. This can lead to a win-win situation in which companies can fully tap into employee value, and workers receive appropriate remuneration and opportunities for progression. Additionally, knowledge of labour laws and regulations has familiarised me with the rights and duties of employers and employees, which will be of great value to me as a graduate student.” 

Commentary and Analysis

The first paragraph of this section is written confidently. It outlines some academic achievements without writing them as a list. The writer achieves this by explaining what they gained from their experiences. They then link these elements to the course and show how they will be of value.

The most impressive aspect of the second paragraph is that it illustrates connections between the subject of undergraduate study and the intended postgraduate course. The writer is showing transferable skills that will be of value in the future and making explicit connections between the two different subjects, helping to show how a diverse educational background adds to their suitability. 

Again, a sense of value is central to this section. The writer ensures that each example is given a value regarding the application’s demands.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 1

“Beyond the classroom, I have operationalised my theoretical knowledge in real-life practice. Interning at the Scorpio Real Estate Development Co, I assisted with the entry procedures for new staff and witnessed the career development of numerous employees from varying departments. Observing the recruitment patterns and preferences of different types of organisations, I observed that state-owned companies tend to recruit talent and offer higher salaries and better entitlements to maintain a low turnover rate and stable employee structure. By contrast, foreign and internet companies attach less importance to stability and focus more on talent creativity. My knowledge of HRM models and labour economy inspired me to think that these differences in recruitment strategy may arise from the varying nature, management structure and strategic positioning of each enterprise. I aim to develop my understanding of these differences during my master’s research.”

By using the example of an internship experience in a seemingly unrelated field, the writer has been able to offer an opinion on their workplace HRM experience. This shows a degree of industry experience but, more importantly, allows the writer to use their expertise to connect with the course’s content. 

By offering an opinion of what they observed and showing an understanding of gaps in their knowledge, they are turning a lack of knowledge into a compelling motivation for their application.

Personal Statement Example: Practical Experience 2

“Moreover, this internship taught me that approaches to HRM are constantly being adjusted and adapted based on practical experience. For instance, the Scorpio Real Estate Development Co is an established business. An established company’s policies and incentives allow its employees to be more aware of the steps needed for advancement and long-term growth. After many decades, the organisational structures of big firms stabilise, and roles become formalised and repetitive. This implies that employees should simply repeat previous tasks and rely on the company’s existing operational system, but this approach can cause workers’ inventive talents to diminish with time.”

Commentary and Analysis: 

This section deepens the value of the writer’s internship and adds evidence to their understanding of the sector they wish to enter. This is ideal for an admissions reader, as they will note the use of language and complexity of informed knowledge in this passage. This, in turn, adds to the candidate’s academic and professional suitability.

The passage also reflects the writer’s ethos, alluded to earlier, and effectively leads to the conclusion by setting up their professional ambitions.

Personal Statement Example: Conclusion

“More positively, many well-known multinational corporations are now devoting more resources to employee training in order to address these issues. It is my intention to place myself at the forefront of this burgeoning field after graduating and apply the skills and knowledge gained from this course to play a critical role in revolutionising the value and application of human resources management in a global setting. I have complete confidence in both your esteemed academic programme and in my capacity to perform outstandingly as a purposeful and positive member of your faculty community.”

The conclusion benefits from brevity and doesn’t recap previous content, both of which are positives. It clearly states the writer’s professional ambitions, which relate directly to the previous content. The passage then links those ambitions with the course, emphasising its importance in helping the writer achieve their goals.

A powerful personal statement, it includes several critical elements: relevant academic and practical experience, ambitions and suitability for the course. It also offers good connections to the course but needs detailed examples of research experience and ambition. However, it  doesn’t provide evidence of the academic skills necessary for postgraduate study, although the evidence of prior learning is convincing.

With a little more focus on academic reading, research and skills, this would be a perfect postgraduate personal statement!

A personal statement AKA admissions or application essay or statement of purpose is a type of essay or written statement a candidate presents to a college, university, or graduate school they are applying to, explaining why they want to attend that school, study a particular course, and why they would be a perfect fit for these things.

A personal statement for masters is an essay you submit specifically for your postgraduate application. Writing one presents the opportunity for you to promote yourself to a school and show the admissions teachers that you are the perfect candidate for a course.

Tips For Making Your Personal Statement For Masters Stand Out

Before we get into how you should write a statement of purpose for masters, we would first like to share with you certain tips to include in your essay to make it stand out from that of other applicants and be convincing enough to any admissions officer that reads it. The tips we have mentioned here, cover general things like starting and ending your personal statement, timing, length, and what to include and what not to include in the essay, etc.

1. Starting And Ending A Personal Statement

When starting a personal statement, you would want to right off the bat grab the reader’s attention. To do this, start the statement by writing about your degree of choice, next why you want to study it and then how you got interested in it.

The next 2 sentences after that should cover a summary of your background in the chosen field, and you conclude by saying what you plan to do once you acquire your graduate degree.

Also start with that the evaluators reading want to hear first, then every other information should come second. You will notice we’ve used in the sop examples for masters we will share with you later in this article.

2. Plan Ahead

A personal statement is not something you rush while writing, which means if you want to get something good before you application then you must start to decide things like the length and how long it should take to complete.

Let us throw more light on this…

For length, a personal statement should be brief ranging somewhere between 500 -700 words, although schools often detect how long it should be. So, this is dependent on the institution you are applying to.

In terms of what to say in a statement, you could include personal experiences like why you were driven to apply for the program, an experience you had with a scholar in your chosen discipline, a course you took that inspired you to pursue masters, or a key moment during your studies which further motivated you.

No matter what you decide to write, just keep in mind that you need to take your time to craft something good even if it means creating several drafts before the real thing and do not forget to proofread the statement for errors.

3. Research Your Program Of Study

Researching your program of study is one way to establish that you truly understand the discipline you’re getting into and prove to the admissions officer that you thoroughly thought about it before applying.

And because you want to put yourself forward as a serious candidate, one way to make you research easier is for you to visit the website of the department you are applying to. This page will contain information about faculty members, their specialisation, and publications.

From the intel, you gathered there you can now identify which professors match your interests and which ones you will benefit the most from learning under. After you’ve found this out, relate the same in a sentence or two in your statement of purpose for masters.

Example: “I would be honoured to study under the tutelage of Professor Nadia whose work I found resonated strongly with my beliefs and intended projects in this course”.

4. Avoid Clichés, Junks, And Many Details

When writing a statement of purpose for master degree try to avoid clichés, junks, and unnecessary details so that you don’t lose or bore your readers in between. Be as concise as possible, even if it’s your chance to express yourself.

A personal statement is an opportunity for the admissions committee to get information that tells the that you are suitable for the course. So, when you overpower your statement with too many words, stories, and useless details, you come off as someone who is just trying to meet the word count.

5. Include Your Personal History Only If It Adds To The Statement

Do not include your personal history in your statement of intent for masters if it is not relevant to your purpose of study. This means no need for you to tell that story about that time you helped someone treat a cut and immediately realised that you wanted to be a doctor or nurse or how you developed a taste for reading at a very young age.

We can guarantee you that the hundreds of other applications competing for the same spot you are felt the same way, so saying those things really doesn’t make you unique.

On the other hand, if you are going to add personal history to your statement, you can put in things like an internship you did and the experience you got from the job, a major research project you ran by yourself, publications you’ve read or published, conferences you’ve attended or presentations you’ve done. These experiences are more concrete and are directly related to your program of study. They also set you apart from other applicants.

6. Don't Use The Same Personal Statement For All Your Applications

One common mistake applicant make that you shouldn’t is using the same statement of purpose for master degree for all your applications. Using the same information repeatedly even if you are going to change the university names is risky and could land you in a big mistake on a day you forget to be thorough.

All programmes have their own unique set of questions they want to see answered and information they need in your personal statement.

On the other hand, if you are applying for the masters to change from the field you studied in your undergraduate to another field, you should tell the school why you decided to take a different path in your studies.

Questions to ask yourself for this include:

  • Your reason for deciding to change your discipline.
  • How your undergraduate degree will be material for bringing fresh insights into your masters course.
  • How changing your study path will help you attain your future career.

2. Structuring A Personal Statement

Having good structure for your personal statement for master degree is important because it ensures that everything from the beginning, middle, and ending of the statement is written and equally falls in place perfectly.

Start your personal statement with an attention-grabbing introduction that is not dramatic or cliché. That means you should not begin with any of these over-used phrases we’ve listed out below:

You would want to be as snappy as possible with your opening because the admission officer has over a hundred applications to read and can’t waste all their time on yours. This means you should avoid overpowering it with unnecessary facts, quotes, and stories from your life.

The middle part of your ma personal statement is where the main content of the write-up should be. This is where you show your dedication to the course you’ve chosen, what motivated you to choose it, and why you are the right candidate for it.

When writing the middle part of a graduate personal statement, you should:  

  • Give concrete reasons why you want to study a course at the University. The reason could be because of how the course is aligned to your future career or the University’s reputation in teaching that program.
  • Mention relevant things like projects, dissertations, or essays you’ve done, and any work experience you have.
  • Show proof of your core skills like and how they can contribute to the department.
  • Prove what makes you a unique candidate.
  • Discuss who your main influences for wanting to study the course are and why.
  • Add experiences like memberships to clubs that are related to your field, papers you’ve written before, awards, scholarships, or prizes.
  • Draw focus to how the course links to your past and future.
  • Mention your academic and non-academic skills and how they fit the course.

For Formatting:

  • Keep the statement length between 250 -500 words or as directed by the school.
  • Sentences should be no more than 25-30 words.
  • Use headings to break up the content – Why this university? Why this subject? Etc.
  • Make claims and provide evidence to back each of them up. This can be done by discussing your work experience and academic interests.

Language and tone to use:     

  • The tone for your masters application personal statement should be positive and enthusiastic, to show you eagerness to learn and so that you convince the evaluators that you have what it takes to succeed.
  • Use exciting and refreshing language, and an engaging opening line.
  • Ensure you grammar, punctuations, and spellings are accurate.
  • Avoid exaggerated claims you cannot backup.
  • Don’t use cliché generic terms and keep your focus on the course.

Keep the ending of your essay for master degree application concise and memorable, leaving no doubt in the admission officers mind that you deserve a spot on the program.

Human resource management is an area of industry and commerce that is ever-increasing in importance. It is an area that has gone from strength-to-strength as the emphasis on the workforce has developed in recent years, and now a vital cog in the machinery of any business.

It was by chance that I became interested in the real value of human resource management when I went on a work placement as part of my business studies GCSE course in secondary school. I was placed with a large pharmaceutical company for two weeks, and at first was horrified to find out I would be spending that time not with the chief executive as I had hoped, but in the human resources department. It would be accurate to say at that point in my life I had absolutely no idea what human resources was. Over the course of a fortnight, however, I quickly realised the sheer scale of the task the human resources team had on its hands when it came to managing a workforce of more than 3,000 people on just one site.

I took this new found knowledge with me through my A-Level studies where I achieved good grades in economics, mathematics and business studies and was always keen to try and apply what I had learned during my work experience to my time in college albeit it very limited in opportunity.

During my time in college I once again embarked on a two-week work experience placement, this time with the human resources department within a major NHS Trust, which once again proved to be a real eye opener. The sheer scale and diversity of the workforce that is needed to run an acute hospital is almost unparalleled. I found the number of different roles to be played out as part of such a large human resources team very interesting, and was pleased to be allowed to get involved in a number of workforce projects and develop my own understanding of human resource management. There were times during this work placement when emergency staffing policies were being implemented that I found out just how much pressure could be involved in this line of work, but I enjoyed every minute of it.

I feel there is a wealth of challenging and exciting opportunities to be found when examining effective human resource management in both the public and private sector

I want to further develop my skills and understanding of human resource management to enable me to pursue a career in this field once I complete my studies.

I am a very ambitious and driven individual and am focused on pursuing a career in the field of human resources. I feel this is an exciting area in the business world today and one that I have the ability and aptitude in which to succeed.

The human resources department is now an essential part of every major corporation in every industry. The importance of HR management has increased dramatically over the last few decades as the emphasis on the welfare of employees has increased. From taking numerous courses organised by HR departments in my career, I was greatly impressed by the work of HR managers and decided that, given my interests and skills, I would like a senior role within HR management. The MSc in Human Resources Development and Consultancy will give me the necessary academic knowledge to fulfil my ambition.

My work experience has already helped me develop many of the requisite skills for my career and the degree. From the age of eighteen I was supporting myself with a variety of customer-facing roles, from customer service in a restaurant to reception and secretary work at a busy fitness club and one of the most popular radio stations in my native Poland. Thanks to my hard work, I gained more senior roles with more management responsibilities, first as a store supervisor for a major retailer in Ireland and then as a bar supervisor in a busy London pub. In the roles, I was given responsibility for recruiting and training new employees. The experience convinced me that I have the requisite interpersonal and management skills to excel as an HR manager, which made me even more determined to achieve my career goal. Recently, I had a golden opportunity to exercise my management skills when I worked in a supervisory role in one of the largest outsourcing companies in Poland.

I am particularly good at motivating people to perform better in their jobs and I greatly enjoyed taking courses organised by HR to improve my management and interpersonal skills. I would like to develop these skills further by learning more of the theory behind organisational psychology in the HR Strategies module of the degree so that I may draw on the wealth of research to better understand and motivate employees under my supervision.

Apart from the wealth of work experience I have amassed, I also have a strong academic background that ensures I am academically prepared for the course. I successfully completed a BA in International Relations and European Integration, in which I performed particularly well in a number of HR-related subjects, including Employment Policy, European Social Law and the European System of Human Rights. The courses taught me about the rights of employees and the duties of employers, which I always keep in mind to ensure the rights of my employees are respected.

On the degree, I also took courses in Philosophy, Mathematics and English that equipped me with essential critical thinking and writing skills that should stand me in good stead for writing essays and a dissertation as part of the Masters.

Outside of the work place and the classroom, I have been preparing myself for the degree by reading books on HR and organisational psychology. I particularly enjoyed Dave Ulrich’s Human Resources Champions, which emphasises the importance of theory and research for effective HR management, and popular sociology books, including Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers, which describes the requisite conditions for outstandingly successful work. I should like to organise a book club with fellow students so that we may read relevant texts outside of the classroom and create a mutually supportive study environment.

When not reading or working, I love to spend most of my time with my two year-old daughter. Caring for a child is a full-time job in itself, which means I have to be organised and manage my time effectively to juggle caring with my career, a skill that should be of great use in the degree.

The degree appeals to me greatly, not only because it will equip me with the requisite knowledge to become a specialist in training and development, but also because the curriculum will satisfy my wide-ranging intellectual curiosity and intense interest in psychology and human relations.

Why Do You Need a Personal Statement?

A personal statement is a chance for admissions committees to get to know you: your goals and passions, what you’ll bring to the program, and what you’re hoping to get out of the program.  You need to sell the admissions committee on what makes you a worthwhile applicant. The personal statement is a good chance to highlight significant things about you that don’t appear elsewhere on your application.

A personal statement is slightly different from a statement of purpose (also known as a letter of intent). A statement of purpose/letter of intent tends to be more tightly focused on your academic or professional credentials and your future research and/or professional interests.

While a personal statement also addresses your academic experiences and goals, you have more leeway to be a little more, well, personal. In a personal statement, it’s often appropriate to include information on significant life experiences or challenges that aren’t necessarily directly relevant to your field of interest.

Some programs ask for both a personal statement and a statement of purpose/letter of intent. In this case, the personal statement is likely to be much more tightly focused on your life experience and personality assets while the statement of purpose will focus in much more on your academic/research experiences and goals.

However, there’s not always a hard-and-fast demarcation between a personal statement and a statement of purpose. The two statement types should address a lot of the same themes, especially as relates to your future goals and the valuable assets you bring to the program. Some programs will ask for a personal statement but the prompt will be focused primarily on your research and professional experiences and interests. Some will ask for a statement of purpose but the prompt will be more focused on your general life experiences.

When in doubt, give the program what they are asking for in the prompt and don’t get too hung up on whether they call it a personal statement or statement of purpose. You can always call the admissions office to get more clarification on what they want you to address in your admissions essay.

What Makes a Good Grad School Personal Statement?

A great graduate school personal statement can come in many forms and styles. However, strong grad school personal statement examples all share the same following elements:

A Clear Narrative

Above all, a good personal statement communicates clear messages about what makes you a strong applicant who is likely to have success in graduate school. So to that extent, think about a couple of key points that you want to communicate about yourself and then drill down on how you can best communicate those points. (Your key points should of course be related to what you can bring to the field and to the program specifically).

You can also decide whether to address things like setbacks or gaps in your application as part of your narrative. Have a low GPA for a couple semesters due to a health issue? Been out of a job for a while taking care of a family member? If you do decide to explain an issue like this, make sure that the overall arc is more about demonstrating positive qualities like resilience and diligence than about providing excuses.

Specific Examples

A great statement of purpose uses specific examples to illustrate its key messages. This can include anecdotes that demonstrate particular traits or even references to scholars and works that have influenced your academic trajectory to show that you are familiar and insightful about the relevant literature in your field.

Just saying “I love plants,” is pretty vague. Describing how you worked in a plant lab during undergrad and then went home and carefully cultivated your own greenhouse where you cross-bred new flower colors by hand is much more specific and vivid, which makes for better evidence.

A strong personal statement will describe why you are a good fit for the program, and why the program is a good fit for you. It’s important to identify specific things about the program that appeal to you, and how you’ll take advantage of those opportunities. It’s also a good idea to talk about specific professors you might be interested in working with. This shows that you are informed about and genuinely invested in the program.

Strong Writing

Even quantitative and science disciplines typically require some writing, so it’s important that your personal statement shows strong writing skills. Make sure that you are communicating clearly and that you don’t have any grammar and spelling errors. It’s helpful to get other people to read your statement and provide feedback. Plan on going through multiple drafts.

Another important thing here is to avoid cliches and gimmicks. Don’t deploy overused phrases and openings like “ever since I was a child.” Don’t structure your statement in a gimmicky way (i.e., writing a faux legal brief about yourself for a law school statement of purpose). The first will make your writing banal; the second is likely to make you stand out in a bad way.

Appropriate Boundaries

While you can be more personal in a personal statement than in a statement of purpose, it’s important to maintain appropriate boundaries in your writing. Don’t overshare anything too personal about relationships, bodily functions, or illegal activities. Similarly, don’t share anything that makes it seem like you may be out of control, unstable, or an otherwise risky investment. The personal statement is not a confessional booth. If you share inappropriately, you may seem like you have bad judgment, which is a huge red flag to admissions committees.

You should also be careful with how you deploy humor and jokes. Your statement doesn’t have to be totally joyless and serious, but bear in mind that the person reading the statement may not have the same sense of humor as you do. When in doubt, err towards the side of being as inoffensive as possible.

Just as being too intimate in your statement can hurt you, it’s also important not to be overly formal or staid. You should be professional, but conversational.

For this Japanese Studies master’s degree, the applicant had to provide a statement of purpose outlining her academic goals and experience with Japanese and a separate personal statement describing her personal relationship with Japanese Studies and what led her to pursue a master’s degree.

Here’s what’s successful about this personal statement:

  • An attention-grabbing beginning: The applicant begins with the statement that Japanese has never come easily to her and that it’s a brutal language to learn. Seeing as how this is an application for a Japanese Studies program, this is an intriguing beginning that makes the reader want to keep going.
  • A compelling narrative: From this attention-grabbing beginning, the applicant builds a well-structured and dramatic narrative tracking her engagement with the Japanese language over time. The clear turning point is her experience studying abroad, leading to a resolution in which she has clarity about her plans. Seeing as how the applicant wants to be a translator of Japanese literature, the tight narrative structure here is a great way to show her writing skills.
  • Specific examples that show important traits: The applicant clearly communicates both a deep passion for Japanese through examples of her continued engagement with Japanese and her determination and work ethic by highlighting the challenges she’s faced (and overcome) in her study of the language. This gives the impression that she is an engaged and dedicated student.

Overall, this is a very strong statement both in terms of style and content. It flows well, is memorable, and communicates that the applicant would make the most of the graduate school experience.

Sample Personal Statement for Graduate School 2

This personal statement for a Music Composition master’s degree discusses the factors that motivate the applicant to pursue graduate study.

Here’s what works well in this statement:

  • The applicant provides two clear reasons motivating the student to pursue graduate study: her experiences with music growing up, and her family’s musical history. She then supports those two reasons with examples and analysis.
  • The description of her ancestors’ engagement with music is very compelling and memorable. The applicant paints her own involvement with music as almost inevitable based on her family’s long history with musical pursuits.
  • The applicant gives thoughtful analysis of the advantages she has been afforded that have allowed her to study music so extensively. We get the sense that she is insightful and empathetic—qualities that would add greatly to any academic community.

This is a strong, serviceable personal statement. And in truth, given that this for a masters in music composition, other elements of the application (like work samples) are probably the most important.  However, here are two small changes I would make to improve it:

  • I would probably to split the massive second paragraph into 2-3 separate paragraphs. I might use one paragraph to orient the reader to the family’s musical history, one paragraph to discuss Giacomo and Antonio, and one paragraph to discuss how the family has influenced the applicant. As it stands, it’s a little unwieldy and the second paragraph doesn’t have a super-clear focus even though it’s all loosely related to the applicant’s family history with music.
  • I would also slightly shorten the anecdote about the applicant’s ancestors and expand more on how this family history has motivated the applicant’s interest in music. In what specific ways has her ancestors’ perseverance inspired her? Did she think about them during hard practice sessions? Is she interested in composing music in a style they might have played? More specific examples here would lend greater depth and clarity to the statement.

  • This statement is clearly organized. Almost every paragraph has a distinct focus and message, and when I move on to a new idea, I move on to a new paragraph with a logical transitions.
  • This statement covers a lot of ground in a pretty short space. I discuss my family history, my goals, my educational background, and my professional background. But because the paragraphs are organized and I use specific examples, it doesn’t feel too vague or scattered.
  • In addition to including information about my personal motivations, like my family, I also include some analysis about tailoring health interventions with my example of the Zande. This is a good way to show off what kinds of insights I might bring to the program based on my academic background.

Grad School Personal Statement Example: Deep Dive

Now let’s do a deep dive, paragraph-by-paragraph, on one of these sample graduate school personal statements. We’ll use my personal statement that I used when I applied to Columbia’s public health program.

Paragraph One: For twenty-three years, my grandmother (a Veterinarian and an Epidemiologist) ran the Communicable Disease Department of a mid-sized urban public health department. The stories of Grandma Betty doggedly tracking down the named sexual partners of the infected are part of our family lore. Grandma Betty would persuade people to be tested for sexually transmitted diseases, encourage safer sexual practices, document the spread of infection and strive to contain and prevent it. Indeed, due to the large gay population in the city where she worked, Grandma Betty was at the forefront of the AIDS crises, and her analysis contributed greatly towards understanding how the disease was contracted and spread. My grandmother has always been a huge inspiration to me, and the reason why a career in public health was always on my radar.

This is an attention-grabbing opening anecdote that avoids most of the usual cliches about childhood dreams and proclivities. This story also subtly shows that I have a sense of public health history, given the significance of the AIDs crisis for public health as a field.

It’s good that I connect this family history to my own interests. However, if I were to revise this paragraph again, I might cut down on some of the detail because when it comes down to it, this story isn’t really about me. It’s important that even (sparingly used) anecdotes about other people ultimately reveal something about you in a personal statement.

Paragraph Two: Recent years have cemented that interest. In January 2012, my parents adopted my little brother Fred from China. Doctors in America subsequently diagnosed Fred with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). My parents were told that if Fred’s condition had been discovered in China, the (very poor) orphanage in which he spent the first 8+ years of his life would have recognized his DMD as a death sentence and denied him sustenance to hasten his demise.

Here’s another compelling anecdote to help explain my interest in public health. This is an appropriately personal detail for a personal statement—it’s a serious thing about my immediate family, but it doesn’t disclose anything that the admissions committee might find concerning or inappropriate.

If I were to take another pass through this paragraph, the main thing I would change is the last phrase. “Denied him sustenance to hasten his demise” is a little flowery. “Denied him food to hasten his death” is actually more powerful because it’s clearer and more direct.

Paragraph Three: It is not right that some people have access to the best doctors and treatment while others have no medical care. I want to pursue an MPH in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia because studying social factors in health, with a particular focus on socio-health inequities, will prepare me to address these inequities. The interdisciplinary approach of the program appeals to me greatly as I believe interdisciplinary approaches are the most effective way to develop meaningful solutions to complex problems.

In this paragraph I make a neat and clear transition from discussing what sparked my interest in public health and health equity to what I am interested in about Columbia specifically: the interdisciplinary focus of the program, and how that focus will prepare me to solve complex health problems. This paragraph also serves as a good pivot point to start discussing my academic and professional background.

Paragraph Four: My undergraduate education has prepared me well for my chosen career. Understanding the underlying structure of a group’s culture is essential to successfully communicating with the group. In studying folklore and mythology, I’ve learned how to parse the unspoken structures of folk groups, and how those structures can be used to build bridges of understanding. For example, in a culture where most illnesses are believed to be caused by witchcraft, as is the case for the Zande people of central Africa, any successful health intervention or education program would of necessity take into account their very real belief in witchcraft.

In this paragraph, I link my undergraduate education and the skills I learned there to public health. The (very brief) analysis of tailoring health interventions to the Zande is a good way to show insight and show off the competencies I would bring to the program.

Paragraph Five: I now work in the healthcare industry for one of the largest providers of health benefits in the world. In addition to reigniting my passion for data and quantitative analytics, working for this company has immersed me in the business side of healthcare, a critical component of public health.

This brief paragraph highlights my relevant work experience in the healthcare industry. It also allows me to mention my work with data and quantitative analytics, which isn’t necessarily obvious from my academic background, which was primarily based in the social sciences.

Paragraph Six: I intend to pursue a PhD in order to become an expert in how social factors affect health, particularly as related to gender and sexuality. I intend to pursue a certificate in Sexuality, Sexual Health, and Reproduction. Working together with other experts to create effective interventions across cultures and societies, I want to help transform health landscapes both in America and abroad.

This final paragraph is about my future plans and intentions. Unfortunately, it’s a little disjointed, primarily because I discuss goals of pursuing a PhD before I talk about what certificate I want to pursue within the MPH program! Switching those two sentences and discussing my certificate goals within the MPH and then mentioning my PhD plans would make a lot more sense.

I also start two sentences in a row with “I intend,” which is repetitive.

The final sentence is a little bit generic; I might tailor it to specifically discuss a gender and sexual health issue, since that is the primary area of interest I’ve identified.

This was a successful personal statement; I got into (and attended!) the program. It has strong examples, clear organization, and outlines what interests me about the program (its interdisciplinary focus) and what competencies I would bring (a background in cultural analysis and experience with the business side of healthcare). However, a few slight tweaks would elevate this statement to the next level.

However, all of these statements are definitely pushing the boundaries of acceptable length, as all are above 1000 and one is almost 1500 words! Many programs limit you to 500 words; if you don’t have a limit, you should try to keep it to two single-spaced pages at most (which is about 1000 words).

University of Chicago Personal Statement for Graduate School Examples

These examples of successful essays to the University of Chicago law school cover a wide range of life experiences and topics. The writing in all is very vivid, and all communicate clear messages about the students’ strengths and competencies.

Note, however, that these are all essays that specifically worked for University of Chicago law school. That does not mean that they would work everywhere. In fact, one major thing to note is that many of these responses, while well-written and vivid, barely address the students’ interest in law school at all! This is something that might not work well for most graduate programs.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 10

This successful essay for law school from a Wheaton College undergraduate does a great job tracking the student’s interest in the law in a compelling and personal way. Wheaton offers other graduate school personal statement examples, but this one offers the most persuasive case for the students’ competencies. The student accomplishes this by using clear, well-elaborated examples, showing strong and vivid writing, and highlighting positive qualities like an interest in justice and empathy without seeming grandiose or out of touch.

Wheaton College Personal Statement for Graduate School Sample 1

Based on the background information provided at the bottom of the essay, this essay was apparently successful for this applicant. However, I’ve actually included this essay because it demonstrates an extremely risky approach. While this personal statement is strikingly written and the story is very memorable, it could definitely communicate the wrong message to some admissions committees. The student’s decision not to report the drill sergeant may read incredibly poorly to some admissions committees. They may wonder if the student’s failure to report the sergeant’s violence will ultimately expose more soldiers-in-training to the same kinds of abuses. This incident perhaps reads especially poorly in light of the fact that the military has such a notable problem with violence against women being covered up and otherwise mishandled

It’s actually hard to get a complete picture of the student’s true motivations from this essay, and what we have might raise real questions about the student’s character to some admissions committees. Through this signature program, CVS Caremark and the Trust supports nonprofit organizations that provide innovative programs and services in local communities, focused on helping children with disabilities to learn, play and succeed in life.

The goals of All Kids Can are to raise awareness in schools and in local communities about the importance of inclusion; build barrier-free playgrounds so children of all abilities can play side-by-side; and provide medical rehabilitation and related services to children with disabilities.  I have taken full advantage of every opportunity to contribute to this program as a store manager for the past 10 years, responsible for onboarding, training, development of new and current talent. My work and commitment during my time in this program allowed me to manage across boundaries and build relationships with all levels of management. Given that my father is a Human Resource Manager at XYZ Institute, I have had the liberty to closely watch him and understand his job responsibilities. Here I got the snippet of practical experiences of being a Human Resource Trainee and got to meet different departmental representatives. With the experience gained from the training, I am now confident to take a course and later build a career in Human Resource.

As a course which is of high human significance and relevance, I am sure I will have a bright future in this career. I am confident that my leadership qualities, interpersonal skills, communication skills etc. will come in handy during this course and career. Business and Human Resource Management Personal Statement

The most important character trait of a business owner is the ability to take a risk. To many, the thought of a career based on risks can be unnerving, but I personally have always been fascinated by ‘what if’; a trait I share with my father.

After being made redundant at the age of 37, with three young children, my father was able to turn uncertainty and a fear of the unknown into a dynamic, thriving business, which after 17 years is continuously growing; all thanks to taking a risk. This is what inspired me to take a risk and branch out of the relative safety of my hometown and apply to study business at university, with the hope that maybe one day I too can turn a ‘what if’ into my reality. Aside from the wish of following in my father’s footsteps, one of my main motivational factors to study business is the opportunity to work in an ever-changing and dynamic industry, which provides opportunities and career paths into an endless variety of fields and sectors. My intrigue in this subject has always been particularly sparked by the heart of a business: it’s people. I believe that the success of a business ultimately lies with the people within it which is why I wish to study Business and Human Resource Management.

Since childhood I have always been a talkative and friendly person and have had a strong desire to help others, something that has helped me throughout my job working as a bar tender at a local restaurant, The Dyffryn Arms. This job has provided me with a lot of opportunities to further my personal skills, including my communication skills and problem solving skills. My job has presented me with a wide variety of responsibilities which I have undertaken to the best of my ability, such as having had the opportunity to help with the training of new members of staff, something that I have thoroughly enjoyed. It has also led me to be able to efficiently work within a team and effectively communicating with my team members to ensure the smooth running of the business. Prior to my current job, I also worked for my father’s business Pressure Washer Services. This experience also allowed me a closer look into a realistic day-to-day view of human resource management and how various techniques can affect the effectiveness and efficiency with which employees undertake their tasks which I have since been able to apply to my studies to further understand this concept.

In my spare time I try to surround myself with my friends and family and strive to make time to socialise with them as I have strong family values and think that their support and encouragement is vital in my future success.

I also have a keen interest in current events and politics and like to keep up with both which I also find broadens my knowledge and allows me to have a more varied insight to the world and the people within it.

Throughout my education, I have always been very determined and driven to push myself to achieving the best results possible and feel that the challenge of a university degree can allow me to further my skills.

I am currently studying A-level Business, BTEC Extended Certificate in Enterprise and Entrepreneurship and Welsh Baccalaureate in Neath Port Talbot College. I am thoroughly enjoying all 3 of these subject areas as each give different views into the world of business as well as an insight into the wider world, something I particularly been intrigued by whilst studying for the Welsh Baccalaureate. As well as having a particular interest in business, I have also studied Sociology and AS Law, areas I chose to study due to my interest in society and how people interact with each other. Whilst neither of these subject were my main career goal, I do feel that the combination of studying Law, Sociology and Business has allowed me to develop a well-rounded knowledge of Human Resource Management which I would love to study further at university. I am excited and optimistic about the future and ready to see what opportunities it may hold.

In a turbulent economic and social climate, business remains of core importance. It is a crucial element of our lives, working as a catalyst for innovation, which is why I wish to study it at undergraduate level. My interest in business was evident from an early age. At 13 I established a jewellery business with a friend; the venture lasted for over two years and taught me about the everyday obstacles that a firm can encounter. My participation in both the Young Enterprise and Young Entrepreneur projects further stoked my enthusiasm, and during these programmes I was able to demonstrate strong leadership qualities, as well as excellent communication and creative skills when solving problems. One of my passions in life is for people; I believe that humans are the ultimate resource, and that effective management of employees can aid a firm to reach its full potential. What would be the point of investing millions in extension strategies such as product and market development, if those selling the goods were lacking motivation? On a recent work experience placement at Jarrolds department store I was able to obtain several days in the Human Resource department; my responsibilities included phone handling, assisting customers and helping with the recruitment and selection process. This gave me a realistic view of a modern HR department, and also demonstrated which techniques improved the efficiency of the workers. During this placement I also attained some experience within the marketing department; this involved large amounts of proof reading, as well as aiding with advertising discussions. This enabled me to show initiative when formulating ideas, as well as display creative ability. My experience in the marketing department also led me to understand why language is so crucial in terms of advertising, and how well phrased promotion can infact aid to stimulate demand. Prior to this I was also accepted for work experience at Durrants, a local estate agent; a much smaller company compared to Jarrolds department store, where my focus was around sales. I thoroughly enjoyed this placement, as the property market is an area that has always been of interest to me. Currently I also assist with the accounts at Apercu, a local media company; this involves controlling sales and expenditure spreadsheets, as well as handling receipts and queries. One of the strongest reasons I wish to study business is that it is an exciting and constantly evolving industry; nothing stays the same, which is why I always keep up with business related publications. I take pleasure in reading the independent financial section, and have also thoroughly enjoyed “Understanding Organisations” by Charles Handy. This provided me with explanations of theories to the running of a successful and sustainable business, for example his explanation of the motivation to work points out it is far more complex than simply the desire to earn money. I have participated in both bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh’s award, and feel that this has strengthened my leadership qualities, whilst also improving my mentality when working in a team. Through all of these experiences, I feel I have obtained a sufficient grounding in many of the areas of business, and now hope to build upon them. I believe that university will offer me an excellent opportunity to further my knowledge of business as a whole, and hopefully obtain employment with a well respected organisation in the future.

The Heroines of Human Resources

Naomi Bloom

Naomi Bloom is the Managing Partner at Bloom & Wallace, studied at Boston University, where she received an MBA in Financial Systems, and has been in HR for 46 years.

And she´s perhaps one of the most well-known figures in HR technology. She´s been called the matriarch of HR tech–and the name is certainly fitting. In her own words, she’s seen it all.

As she goes on to say, she got in on “the absolute ground floor when the big banks and insurance agencies were automating their business processes for the first time,” when she took a job as a programmer trainee at John Hancock in the late 1960s.

Bloom was also completing her MBA from Boston University during the night. “I kept finding myself at the intersection of what the technology of the day could do—which wasn’t much—and what was then called personnel,” recalls Bloom.

It was at this intersection of human resources and technology that Bloom launched her career. She helped build the foundation of a new and growing field. She realized very early on that “everything that matters about a company is the people.” She applied to that a philosophy what she had learned growing up:  tikkun olam (a Hebrew phrase for “fix the world”).

Armed with these insights, she set out to improve how companies use their number one resource, their people. Bloom says: “Improving HR is how you fix companies. And technology is how you fix HR.”

So that is what she did. She took a big risk: after working in a systems consulting firm, leading their human resource management (HRM) consulting practices for almost ten years, Bloom branched out on her own.

In 1987, she launched her own consulting firm, Bloom & Wallace . This is where she’s built the only vendor-neutral HRM domain model and HR software architecture “starter kits” to be licensed across the industry. They are considered a primary contributor to many of today's HR best practices.

After a quarter-century running her own firm, Bloom announced on August 5th that she would be winding down her consulting practice. “My proudest accomplishment is that most of the work I’ve done is taken for granted now. There’s a lot of people working today in wonderful HR technology career roles who don’t know that my fingerprints are all over this wonderful industry," she says.

Lisa Brown Morton

Lisa Brown Morton is the Founder & CEO of Nonprofit HR. She studies at Howard University, where she received a BA. She´s been in HR for 25 years.

Brown Morton’s position in HR at a large multinational firm taught her the ins and outs of the international benefits space. However, she soon realized that she would need to cultivate more of a generalist background in order to grow professionally.

After working with two major nonprofit organizations, she decided to form  Nonprofit HR . As she says: “It became hugely apparent to me that no one was really serving this market well, or quite frankly, had a genuine interest in the HR needs of nonprofits.”

Her company is the only firm of its kind in the USA. It covers talent acquisition, outsourcing, project-based support, HR education and advocacy (and everything in-between!).

Brown Morton’s HR expertise has proven to be greatly in-demand. Under her direction, Nonprofit HR has grown rapidly. And as the CEO, she’s had to take on new challenges and reformulate her role at the company.

“I’ve moved from having my own portfolio of clients and being very hands-on to running a full-fledged corporation,” says Brown Morton.

Taking on these new challenges has not always been easy for her. “I think one of the things that works against us as women in HR is our unwillingness to be assertive about our roles and the functions that we lead,” she adds.

But Brown Morton certainly has stepped up to the challenges she’s faced as a leader, taking the company from a “managed growth” approach to a more aggressive one. This strategic aspect of HR has been essential.

While she acknowledges that many women are drawn to HR due to the desire to help others, that isn’t the whole package, she says. HR requires empathy—but to be successful, she says, an HR professional must combine that empathy with technical knowledge and business savvy. “We’ve got to stop asking for a seat at the table,” she says. “We simply need to show up ready and informed with data that will drive business decisions. When we do that, folks will wonder why we didn’t show up sooner.”

Her company hosts an  annual nonprofit HR conference . It conducts a yearly survey to capture employment trends in the nonprofit world. And in 2012, the company began efforts to launch the Nonprofit Workforce Advocacy Practice, the sole purpose of which is to advocate on behalf of nonprofit organizations to ensure that no federal, state or local legislation is enacted that will impede their work.

As Brown Morton says: “We've provided HR professionals in the sector with professional development and information they can use to drive HR practices and help their organizations fulfill their missions. No one else in the country is doing that like we are: on a consistent, committed basis.”

The Secret to Success

Each of these women has gotten to where they are today through hard work—there’s no denying it.

But when I asked each of them why they believed they were successful, the answer was unanimous: specializing in something you care passionately about, and embarking on a never-ending quest to keep learning were key.

For me, HR is the single most important department in a company – the principal motor of corporate advancement. I could not be more excited about the prospect of a professional lifetime combining strategic HR practices with sound business operations, helping companies to expand, and to maintain workplace environments characterized by high levels of worker engagement and satisfaction. In fact, I can think of no quest more noble than giving one’s all to the development of more ethical, inclusive, satisfying, and sustainable workplace cultures.

My professor with whom I am currently studying Global Human Resources Management, Dr. XXXX, granted me an interview which I treasured greatly. He is thus far the most important role model that I have here in America, and he has been inspiring me for some time since I was also his student for the course “Training and Development” last semester.  Professor XXXX was adamant with me that I must not be short-sighted or sell myself short. He encouraged me to form strategic and tactical goals that were commensurate with my long-term vision of my function in the corporate world and society. HR is for me a dream come true because I never anticipated feeling so engaged, so in love with my career. Increasingly, I have come to more fully appreciate the many ways in which an excellent human manager can never be replaced by AI, simply because robots do not have the human touch.

Back home in my country of origin, China, my principal role model and greatest inspiration in life is my dad. He instilled in me great appreciation for education, books, learning, and helping one’s society to advance. I could not respect him more, and his noble, sustainable vision which resulted in the creation of his company YiDou Inc., dedicated to building mobile libraries for Chinese children between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. While still in China before coming to the USA for my education, I worked with him. My title was International Human Resources Manager.

My father taught me how to manage virtual teams, taught me a lot about compensation and staffing, building trust, and maintaining good relationships with one’s employees. I led my team to establish a compensation system for his company which promoted both efficiency and effectiveness – simultaneously enhancing both employee satisfaction and performance.

The MHRM Program at XXXX University is the only program to which I am applying. My heart is set on attending your Master’s Program because XXXX is where I want to learn HR. I am currently finishing my undergraduate studies in Human Resources at Rutgers and I have an enormous respect for my teachers; thus, I hope very much to continue to learn from them on a graduate level.

For the last several years, studying primarily Human Resources as an undergraduate student at Rutgers, my appreciation for the faculty in HR at XXXX has grown incrementally, as result of their profound enthusiasm for their subject matter, their intense passion for improving the workplace, and the richness and texture of the experiences which they take delight in sharing. A student from China, Rutgers has become like a second home and culture for me and I feel very strongly that my performance as a graduate student would be greatly enhanced if I were to be able to remain at Rutgers for Graduate School, continuing to take advantage of the social support base that I have been cultivating here since my arrival.

Great Accomplishments in Human Resources

During Stan Litow’s 31-year career at IBM, one of the most remarkable and insightful Human Resources leaders he worked with was Sheila Forte-Trammell.

After more than 30 years herself in IBM in a diverse range of HR leadership roles in recruiting, placement, compensation, diversity, learning and employee development, she has now retired and consults as the owner of Total HR Services, LLC.

Recently, Stan had a discussion with Sheila about the most key strategic areas in the future for human resources professionals.

Q: As a globally-recognized expert on a broad range of human resources topics, what would you say must be the key focus for HR leaders from today on into the future?

A: The 21st Century has presented a variety of new challenges and business complexities that HR Leaders are dealing with because organizations are functioning in a competitive knowledge economy and it makes it important for leaders to create processes for employees to acquire the right business skills in a timely manner.

Speed to competence, learning agility, innovative application of knowledge and the easy distribution of relevant information throughout the organization have become critical in maintaining competitiveness since 2000.

Q: How do leadership development and succession planning fit in with this complex business environment?

A: The development of the leadership pipeline has taken center stage now more than ever. HR leaders should no longer restrict the use of succession planning as a means to identify the next generation of executive leaders.

The succession planning process must be expanded to include the identification of critical technical and key functional skills at all levels of an organization. This approach ensures there is an adequate pool of employees who have the capabilities to execute on the tactical and strategic plans.

Q: Can you talk a little more about this expansion of succession planning to a broader set of employees. Why is this so important?

A: Many organizations are “lowering the center of gravity”, allowing business decisions to be made at lower levels within an organization. So the new normal is to create a high trust culture where knowledge transfer occurs at all times.

In addition, employees must be encouraged to take bold but intelligent actions that deliver measurable results. Empowering employees in this manner helps them to value themselves and the process.

Q: What is the role of HR leaders in fostering this richer employee and leadership development environment?

A: When employees feel that they are valued, engagement and retention tend to be high. However, given the dynamic and disruptive nature of business today, HR leaders also have to communicate business vision with better clarity and help employees develop greater flexibility and adaptability to perform in an ever changing environment.

HR leaders are expected to help employees develop the skills to show resilience and resolve in the face of challenge so they are able to see the business opportunities that reside within disruption, challenge and crisis, instead of retreating in response to it.

Q: You have accomplished so much so far in your past career, Sheila, and you still have a tremendous impact within the Human Resources Community. Which accomplishments that you are most proud of?

A: In partnership with Dr. Lisa Dragoni and others from the Cornell University Industrial Relations School, a longitudinal study was conducted to show how supervisors facilitate leader development among transitioning leaders; the results of this study were published in the Journal of Applied Psychology in January 2014.

They also reinforced that leaders must model the way and provide instructions and guidance to new leaders. This approach has proven to enhance and accelerate the development of transitioning and new leaders.

Another accomplishment that I am proud of is mentoring others over the course of my career. At one point, I had 25 mentees. To help them, I had to get creative and engage in many lots of different forms of mentoring: I utilized group mentoring, individual mentoring, just in time mentoring, virtual mentoring and speed mentoring to connect with my mentees.

The relationships that I developed were reciprocal in nature: learning was bi-directional. I always tell my mentees that “their success is my reward” and as I watch them develop, I achieve a great sense of pride and accomplishment.

Despite the fact that I am retired, I am still a mentor. One of my mentees sent me a note in 2014. It said: “I wanted to send you a thank you note for all you’ve done for me during my time at IBM. You believed in me when I lost faith in me. You planted a seed in me that is growing daily.”

I want to pursue my higher education at the University of Bedfordshire for the MSc in International Human Resource Management for September 2022 intake. I want to study this course to enhance my current academic credentials and prepare myself as a career-ready graduate with the required skills and knowledge for my future managerial role (HR & Admin) at Bashundhara Limited, Bangladesh. I strongly believe that this course will meet the requirements by providing relevant skills and knowledge for my professional career position. To fulfil my career aspiration, I found I have some theoretical gaps in strategic management and leadership, project management and consultancy skills, a deep understanding of HRM, and advanced research knowledge, which I am looking to cover in this postgraduate programme offered by the BEDS. I believe that this strategically challenging and Internationally recognized degree can prepare me in the right direction for my future career.

After my secondary and higher secondary education, I completed my Bachelor of Business Administration with a Bachelor of Arts in Islamic History and Culture in 2021, which provided me with an academic platform in the area. While doing research about my career, I realized that I need an internationally recognized qualification which will allow me to manage a better and more secure professional career position. The skills, knowledge, and experience I have gained from my academic level will assist in equipping me with a master's qualification at your university as I have studied core subjects of business including management, marketing, accounting, finance, economics, and organization, along with intermediate and some advanced courses on HR. In addition, I have acquired basic HR and administrative skills from my current profession along with organizational skills, management skills, communication skills, time management skills, and so on. These will help to understand some topics of this master's course. . Therefore, pursuing this MSc qualification from your institution would be appropriate to become an industry professional in the area of HR & Admin.

I want to study this course due its practical learning approach, global professional recognition, international exposure and unique and appropriate modules for my future career aspirations. The foremost reason to pursue this course because I have some theoretical gaps in strategic management and leadership, project management and consultancy skills, in depth understanding regarding HRM, and advanced research knowledge which I am looking to cover from this postgraduate programme offered by theBEDS. I believe that this strategically challenging and internationally recognized degree can prepare me in the right direction for my future career. Furthermore, this course will prepare me to become a career-ready graduate with industry needs. There are enormous benefits of studying this course which inspired me to pursue this course. I am aiming to develop my skills and knowledge from this postgraduate degree which include research skills, business plan and execution methods, problem-solving, analytical skills, leadership skills, decision-making abilities, employee relations, organizational behaviour, performance management skills, and excellent communication skills. These will surely assist me to become a successful HR professional. Furthermore, the course modules of this programme have been designed with the global context of HR in the organization with an employability practice-based approach.

By studying this course, I will develop practical business skills, project management skills, business plan and execution, research methods and techniques and put that knowledge and skills into professional practice. Furthermore, this course will provide me abilities to achieve multicultural and intercultural competencies and build practical skills and knowledge regarding team working, communication, problem dealings, strategic marketing, analytical assessment and so on. Additionally, this course will provide me with skills and knowledge regarding the contemporary and in-depth understanding of HR issues including internal and external environments of the business organization. Additionally, I will be able to analyse and apply conceptual frameworks, and HR strategies to practical HR solutions. These will surely assist me to become a successful industry professional. Additionally, this qualification will provide me with knowledge and understanding of the Principles and practice of HRM in the global dimensions, critical analysis of global HR models, and the capabilities required to work at a strategic level in MNCs.

With this international qualification and the skills, knowledge, and experience from the UK, I believe I can manage a sound professional position in my home country. Similarly, previous graduates managed better professionals and develop their careers when they returned to their home country. My future plan is to join as a Manager (HR & Admin) at Bashundhara Limited, Bangladesh. I have already discussed the prospects with the managing director of that company, and he encouraged me to pursue this degree to be part of his company. I am confident that I can take the best opportunity in an HR & Admin position in this organization. I wish to see myself as a Director of HR in the future in that company.

I want to study this course at your university rather than other universities such as Teesside University and the University of South Wales so that some unique course contents include Performance Achievement Planning, Professional Practice, Talent Resourcing And Development and Leading People In Creative Teams inspired me to select this university over others as these modules are most relevant for my future professional role of the assistant HR manager. In addition, the library and learning resources facilities are outstanding in this university where a seven-storey library building is open 24/7 days at the Luton campus. According to the NSS (National Student Survey) 2019, UOB ranked 16th as most improved in learning resources and 15th as most improved in organisation and management. Furthermore, the Business School of BEDS is the 1st Business School in the UK to achieve the award for Business School Impact System (BSIS). The unique block teaching systems for master's courses also fascinated me to choose this university over others as only one unit will be taught in one block. Consequently, it will assist to gain depth understanding of each specific module. There are some distinct features and unique facilities which are offered by BEDS in my chosen course including the Professional and Academic Development (PAD) team help to develop writing, maths and study skills and assists with assignment or assessment feedback and Drop in sessions with the Study Hub Team which helps to develop academic skills and improve assignment writing techniques. Besides this, the location of the University of Bedfordshire is excellent compared to the other two universities. For instance- Luton is 2.5km from the Campus with London Luton Airport and 30 minutes train journey to the centre of London.

The factors which appeal to me to select the UK as the destination of my higher education due to the following reasons. Firstly, the standard and quality of British education systems have much more global exposure and are recognised by major employers around the world. Specifically, major corporations of Bangladesh provide a high preference to UK graduates with handsome salaries with top-level positions because of practical and professional experience along with a degree. Secondly, studying in the UK will give me opportunities to acquire a degree in 3 years while in Bangladesh and other major decisions take 4 years or more. Consequently, it will be beneficial in case saving money and time and open the door to start a career earlier which will allow me to get a return on investment quicker compared to other countries. Furthermore, UK universities are highly focused to prepare their graduates for the present world’s industry demands along with modern education systems through the latest academic tools, seminars, internships, placement, workshops, company visits, presentations and so on. Moreover, the UK is the most welcoming and one of the 2nd best popular destinations for global students and the most multicultural country in the world has been reported by (HESA).

Studying in the UK will provide me to become truly connected globally and international networking opportunities, while studying in Bangladesh will allow me to be connected only with home students.
