A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education is a research-focused terminal degree that prepares graduates to teach at the postsecondary level and conduct scholarly research that tests theories to improve best practices in teaching and learning. Students entering a PhD program should expect to commit to many years (an average of four to six years) of full-time study. The PhD in Education is not the only doctoral degree in education; the more practice-based Doctor of Education (EdD) degree is another option for people who want to pursue a terminal degree in education. While there is some overlap between the two degree types, EdD graduates tend to pursue roles in education leadership and administration (such as school principal or educational technology specialist), while PhD graduates tend to seek roles as professors and researchers at universities or businesses.

Reasons to pursue a phd in education degree.

There are many reasons to choose to complete a PhD in Education. Among them are:

1. To get a job For those who would like to conduct research and teach at the postsecondary level, a PhD in Education is the best preparation. Even though it takes a serious time commitment, doctoral study will likely be necessary for these types of jobs.

2. To become an expert in the field. Students in PhD programs in education will develop testable theories in education through their research and become experts on one or more topics in the field. Those who have previously studied education at the undergraduate or master’s level but would like to expand their knowledge to other areas of education may benefit from a PhD in Education program. People who are already employed as school leaders and administrators may also wish to become experts in a specific topic of education, and a PhD provides the in-depth study needed to obtain expert-level status.

3. To effect change in education. Based on their research and expertise, PhDs may make recommendations to leaders and legislators to implement change in the field. Therefore, a PhD in Education may be a good fit for people who want to influence large-scale changes and improvements in education.

PhD in Education Degree Program Options

Perhaps the most important factor you should consider when choosing a PhD in Education program is the area of specialization you wish to pursue. As mentioned above, the area of specialization of your degree determines the career path that will be available to you. Consider the type of job you want to target post-graduation. If you are interested in influencing education policy at a national or state level, you may want to consider a PhD in Educational Policy Studies. If you would like to work in a college university as an administrator (dean or department head, for example), you may wish to pursue a PhD in Higher Education.

Program format is also an important consideration when choosing a PhD in Education school. If you prefer traditional, on-campus learning, there is a wide range of schools available to you. If you need some flexibility, you may look for PhD programs in education that include some online or hybrid courses. Whichever type of program you choose for your PhD in Education, unless you choose a school in your area or a 100% online program, you should be prepared to move to the location of the school in order to complete your degree. Since a PhD degree is a four- to six-year commitment and is highly specialized, it is crucial to spend ample time choosing the program that best fits your needs. In addition, PhD programs typically require a full-time commitment of their students, as opposed to EdD programs that cater to (and even prefer) working students. Therefore, if you are in an educational career that cannot be put on hold, a PhD in Education might not be the best doctoral degree choice for you.

Online Degree Program Formats

Due to the intense research focus of the PhD, it is more common to find traditional campus-based programs in education than online programs; however, online PhDs in Education do exist. These online programs offer more flexibility to learners as some coursework can be completed at their own pace, depending on the type of program. Typically, even online PhD programs require some in-person attendance, such as attendance at an orientation or seminars. Hybrid programs offer some courses in a traditional classroom setting and others in an online environment and may offer more flexibility than on-campus programs. Students interested in completing a doctoral degree in education fully online may find an EdD program to be a more suitable fit.

Admission requirements for PhD in Education programs vary; some require a master’s degree for admission and others require a bachelor’s degree. However, typical application packages include qualifying GRE or GMAT scores, postsecondary transcripts, a statement of purpose, a writing sample, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. A personal interview may also be required for admission. Teaching or experience in applied research is sometimes required or preferred.

Funding is another major difference between PhDs in Education and Doctors of Education , as the latter do not tend to offer tuition stipends to students. Most PhD programs in education offer tuition stipends and living quarters or cost of living stipends that are offset by students’ participation in graduate assistantships in teaching and research. In part because of this funding, admission to PhD programs is typically highly competitive. Applicants with related experience, strong GRE scores, and high GPAs may have the best chance of being accepted into a PhD in Education program.

Harvard university.

Together, Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences offer a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education with three concentration choices: Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS); Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE); and Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT). The PhD is grounded in interdisciplinary research marked by quantitative and qualitative methods. Students may focus their independent research during the program on human development, teaching and learning, and policy analysis. The program can be completed in five years of full-time study. Courses available for all concentrations include Colloquium in Culture and Institutions, Education Policy and Program Evaluation, Introduction to Applied Data Analysis, and Introduction to Qualitative Research. The PhD in Education at Harvard culminates in the proposal, writing, and defense of the dissertation. Students are admitted for the fall term, and applications should include a resume, statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation, GRE scores, postsecondary transcripts, and an application fee. In-person interviews take place in January. Admitted students are guaranteed a full funding package for the first five years of study. Harvard Graduate School of Education also offers a Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.); several master’s degrees in education; and several professional education programs in education that are offered both on campus and online.

University of California–Los Angeles

The Department of Education at the University of California–Los Angeles (UCLA) offers a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education: Urban Schooling that trains graduates to improve the practice of urban education by investigating the complex issues facing urban areas and their schools. The PhD follows an interdisciplinary approach to solving problems in education by drawing on other disciplines such as political science, sociology, economics, linguistics, history, and psychology. Admission to the program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduate and graduate work; GRE verbal and quantitative scores of 150 each; and proven related career interest. A master’s degree is preferred; students entering the program without an approved master’s must take a Doctoral Screening Exam in the spring term of the first year or the fall term of the second year. Two strands are offered: Education, Schooling, and Social Transformation (EST) and Design, Learning, and Social Transformation (DLT). Core courses required for both strands include Schools as Social Institutions; Schools in Social Contexts; and Schools, People, & Power. Other cross-strand courses include Social Theories of Practice; Learning & Identity; and Language Issues in Education. The program takes most students around five years to complete and culminates with a doctoral qualifying exam as well as a dissertation. UCLA also offers combined Master of Arts (MA) and PhD programs in Higher Education & Organizational Change; Human Development and Psychology; Social Research Methodology; and Social Sciences and Comparative Education, as well as several Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Doctor of Education (EdD) programs and a postgraduate certificate open to doctoral students.

Northwestern University

Northwestern University offers an interdisciplinary Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Development and Social Policy (HDSP) that draws on the study of anthropology, political science, economics, sociology, and psychology to answer questions about public policy as it relates to human development. Coursework related to human development includes Child Development; Adolescent Development; Adult Development and Aging; and Nature-Nurture Revisited. Courses in the social policy discipline include Social-Community Interventions; Topics: Organizations, Institutions and Society: Persistence and Change Among Public, Private and Non-Profit Sectors; and Educational Policy: Design, Implementation and Effects. Additional methods coursework is required and includes courses such as Proseminar in Human Development & Social Policy and Quantitative Methods III: Empirical Tools for Causal Quantitative Analysis. Applications are due in December for a fall start date, and interview invitations are sent in January. Applications should include an application fee, a statement of purpose, a resume, a writing sample, transcripts from all postsecondary institutions, GRE scores, and English proficiency scores for non-native English speakers. Graduates of Northwestern have assumed roles as teachers and researchers at colleges and universities, as well as policy analysts for government or research organizations. Northwestern also offers a PhD in Learning Sciences and one in Computer Science and Learning Sciences (CS+LS), as well as several master’s degrees in education.

Stanford University

The Graduate School of Education (GSE) at Stanford University offers a unique Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Social Sciences, Humanities, and Interdisciplinary Policy Studies in Education (SHIPS). The SHIPS approach includes two distinctive, but complementary approaches: to develop students’ skills in a disciplinary tradition and to develop skills in a major issue in education. Students can choose a program in one of the seven Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) disciplinary traditions (anthropology; economics; history; linguistics; organizational studies; philosophy; and sociology); a program in one of the four Issue Domains in Education (IDE) areas (educational policy; higher education; international comparative education (ICE); and race, inequality, and language in education (RILE)); or a dual specialization program studying one HSS discipline and one IDE area. The dual specialization program takes full advantage of the SHIPS model and does not take more time or total units than a single program. The Stanford PhD program requires students to commit to four to five years of full-time study, but can take less for students who have a related master’s degree. Students who do not have a relevant master’s degree must earn a doctoral minor related to their program. The PhD culminates in a dissertation project, which is proposed during the fourth year of study. Stanford offers student fellowships and assistantships to graduate students in addition to loans and scholarships. In addition to the SHIPS program, the Stanford GSE offers several other graduate programs in education.

Online and Hybrid Programs

Michigan state university.

Michigan State University’s (MSU) College of Education offers a PhD in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology (EPET) that can be taken in an on-campus mode or hybrid mode depending on the student’s needs. Students attending the program on campus will need to pursue the degree full time by completing three courses each semester in addition to working 20 hours each week in a paid assistantship program; in this mode, the degree can be completed in four years or more. The hybrid mode is built for students who are working full time and can only attend school part time; these students will typically complete four courses each year and finish their degree in five or more years of mostly online learning. One semester of face-to-face learning is offered to those students who are able to take leave from their jobs, and graduate assistantships may be available during that semester to help with the cost of attending class on campus. Two areas of emphasis are offered in Educational Psychology and Educational Technology; an additional specialization in Language and Literacy Education is offered for the Educational Psychology emphasis, as well as an optional Urban Education Graduate Certificate. Graduates of the program have worked as teachers and researchers in a university setting and as leaders in school systems or the private sector. Several master’s degrees are offered at MSU in education, many of which are in an online format.

Colorado State University

Colorado State University (CSU) offers an online Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in Education and Human Resource Studies: Higher Education Leadership Specialization designed for students who are employed full time. The learning experience is marked by two video conferences per week plus two face-to-face meetings on campus per year, one in January and one in July. Only 10-12 students are admitted to each cohort, a group of professional peers who stay together throughout the duration of the program. To be admitted, applicants must have two years of experience in higher education and a regionally accredited master’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. GRE scores are not required. Rather than exams, students submit papers as the predominant form of assessment. Coursework includes Higher Education Finance, Student Development in a Collegiate Context, Analyzing Education Literature, Simulated Presidential Cabinet I, and a final dissertation. Graduates of the program can advance their careers in higher education in positions in administration, student services, and academic support leadership. CSU also offers a hybrid PhD in Organizational Learning, Performance, and Change (OLPC), as well as several online and hybrid master’s programs in education.

University of Kentucky

At the University of Kentucky’s (UK) School of Educational Leadership Studies, students can get an online PhD in Educational Leadership. The PhD at UK focuses on scholarly research and graduates seek roles as faculty, research scientists, or other professional educational roles. In a rare 100% online format, students at UK will complete 42 credit hours of coursework plus four credit hours in a residency for a total of 46 credit hours, taking an average of five to six years to complete, though it is possible to complete the program in as little as four years. The program has a cohort format in which a new group of students is admitted each fall, with applications due by January. Coursework focuses on a Leadership Core (with courses such as Leadership in Educational Organizations I and Politics of Educational Leadership) and a Research Method Core (with courses such as Research Design & Analysis in Education and Field Studies in Educational Settings. In addition to taking 15 hours in each of these two areas, students take 12 hours of elective courses. A handful of courses are held in a live, synchronous format via Zoom sessions on five or six Saturdays each term, but other courses are taught in the evening during the week, allowing students to work during the day. The PhD in Educational Leadership culminates in a dissertation, qualifying exam, and dissertation residency. To be admitted, candidates should have an accredited master’s degree with a GPA of 3.5 or higher and GRE scores in the top 49th percentile. They should also have completed a basic graduate-level course in statistics with a grade of B or higher.

Question : What is the difference between a PhD and a Doctor of Education?

Answer : While there are some similarities between these two terminal degrees in education, there are also distinct differences. In general, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Education tends to focus on research, theory, and preparing graduates for roles as college professors and researchers. The EdD tends to focus more on the application of research to solve educational problems and preparing graduates for roles in educational leadership and administration. PhDs typically (but not always) require students to attend full time, while EdDs are often designed for working students. Still, PhDs tend to take longer to complete (commonly four to six years as opposed to three years for an EdD).

Answer : A PhD in Education can prepare graduates for many types of careers. Many graduates of PhD programs enter teaching and research roles at the postsecondary level at colleges and universities. However, others enter careers in public policy, consulting, or education administration. The specialization you choose for your PhD will largely determine your career opportunities after graduation.

Question : How long is a PhD in Education?

Answer : PhDs in Education usually take between four and six years of full-time study to complete. Often, the first four years are spent in coursework and preparing the dissertation proposal, and subsequent years are spent writing the dissertation and finally, defending it in front of a panel of faculty members.

Question : What can you do with a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction?

Answer : A PhD in Curriculum and Instruction prepares graduates to become teacher educators as well as researchers, policymakers, and administrators. Sometimes PhDs in Curriculum and Instruction offer specialization options, further narrowing the scope of study and career possibilities. Specializations may include Early Childhood Education or a teachable subject area such as science or mathematics.

Question : What is a dissertation?

Answer : Most PhD in Education programs culminate with the writing and defense of a dissertation, which is an in-depth research project in which students study and develop an original concept related to their degree, and then present it to faculty who ask questions while the students “defend” their work. Even if you are attending an online or hybrid program, certain aspects of the dissertation may have to be completed in person, but you should check with the schools of your choice for more information.

Question : What is tenure?

Answer : In the United States, many colleges and universities offer academic tenure, which is a permanent job contract, for faculty positions under certain circumstances. Tenure is appointed by the college or university administration (usually via a tenure committee) to instructors who meet a set of guidelines set by the school. Tenured faculty positions are typically coveted because these instructors can only be terminated under exceptional circumstances such as the discontinuation of the program or high financial demand.

Question : How do professors get tenure?

Answer : Tenure requirements depend on the college or university and may be somewhat subjective. Professors who are hired on a tenure track are typically called assistant professors and it may take six or seven years (or more) to earn tenure. When considering assistant professors for tenure, the tenure committee typically reviews their research contributions, published work, ability to secure grant funding, and teaching effectiveness in the classroom.

The goal of the GSE PhD in Education is to prepare the next generation of leading education researchers. The cornerstone of the doctoral experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Education is the research apprenticeship that all students undertake, typically under the guidance of their academic advisor, but often with other Stanford faculty as well.

In this apprenticeship model, doctoral students are provided with a multi-year funding package that consists of opportunities each quarter to serve as teaching and research assistants for faculty members' courses and research projects. By this means, and in combination with the courses they take as part of their program, students are prepared over an approximately five-year period to excel as university teachers and education researchers.

The doctoral degree in Education at the GSE includes doctoral program requirements as well as a specialization, as listed below, overseen by a faculty committee from one of the GSE's three academic areas.

How to Apply to UConn’s Doctoral Programs in Education

Prospective doctoral students must meet the admission criteria of both the UConn Graduate School and the specific Neag School doctoral program to which they are applying. 

Ph.D. applications are due by December 1 for admission the following Fall. Applicants who submit by December 1 will be considered for funding opportunities (graduate assistantships, teaching assistantships). Applications are welcome after December 1 but may not be eligible for funding.

The next matriculation year for the Ed.D. Program will be Fall 2025. Admissions will occur in Spring 2025.

GRE scores are optional for several of the Neag School’s Ph.D. concentrations and the Ed.D. degree, but are req uired for some Ph.D. concentrations.  Please review the application requirements for each department and concentration before submitting your application through the Graduate School:

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Most doctoral students in the Neag School support their graduate studies through graduate assistantships (details below). Doctoral students may receive financial support from a variety of sources, and we recommend doctoral students research all available opportunities, including the ones shared below, that will best suit their needs. In addition, the Neag School offers competitive scholarships for doctoral students at different stages in their programs.

The University of Connecticut offers a variety of financial aid options to support students along their doctoral journey, in addition to state and federal assistance.

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships

Most doctoral students support their graduate study through graduate assistantships, which can involve teaching (teaching assistantships) and/or research (research assistantships). In fact, in 2022-2023 all Ph.D. students at the Neag School who were eligible for assistantships received one. Assistantships of 10 hours per week (the equivalent of teaching one class a semester) or more provide coverage for tuition, a small stipend, and benefits. The graduate student union is a helpful source of information regarding work rules and compensation for such positions and their associated benefits.  

Teaching Assistantships 

Teaching Assistantships can involve having sole responsibility for a class or supporting a faculty member who is teaching a large class. Teaching an undergraduate course requires having a master’s degree; teaching an MA/MS course requires having a Ph.D. or equivalent, relevant experience. These assistantships are assigned and overseen by the department in which the course is offered. For more information about teaching assistantship possibilities, speak to your advisor or department chair.

Research Assistantships 

Many doctoral students are hired to work on faculty research projects that are funded by outside agencies or internal UConn grants. While many times faculty have their advisees work with them on projects, there are opportunities for students to seek projects with other faculty and in accordance with graduate student union work parameters. Because grants are received on a rolling basis, depending on the funding source, it pays to be proactive in seeking out such opportunities. Speaking to faculty who do research that is relevant to your experience and interests is important, as is consulting with your advisor about any grants of which they are aware and would be a good fit for your interests. Open positions are sometimes posted in the Neag Student News , so it is also a good idea to read that regularly.  

UConn Jorgenson and Harriott Fellowships

(Students must indicate interest in being considered for these fellowships when applying to a graduate program).  

The Jorgensen Fellowship (JF) and the Harriott Fellowship (HF) are university-wide fellowships available to outstanding young scholars admitted to doctoral programs at the University of Connecticut. Nominees for HF and JF awards are expected to demonstrate a commitment to enhancing diversity either within their field of study or more generally in all areas of higher education. These fellowships are open to international students.  

National Organizations

There are also funding opportunities available through national organizations. Students would pursue these funding opportunities on their own. Here is one example:  

The National Science Foundation often has programs that support doctoral study in STEM-related fields. Currently, The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) is designed to help ensure the quality, vitality, and diversity of the scientific and engineering workforce of the United States. The program recognizes and supports outstanding graduate students who are pursuing full-time research-based master's and doctoral degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. The GRFP provides three years of support over a five-year fellowship period for the graduate education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. NSF actively encourages women, persons who are members of groups historically underrepresented in STEM, persons with disabilities, veterans, and undergraduate seniors to apply. Once Enrolled

The University sponsors competitions for two kinds of additional support: conference participation awards and a summer doctoral fellowship . Departments within the Neag School also sponsor opportunities to award additional support to students for a variety of activities.   

As one gets ready to pursue dissertation research, there are also competitive fellowships that one might apply to, including those listed below.  

Neag School Scholarships

There are a number of small internal scholarships available that can provide funding for incidental expenses, such as fees, books, etc. Applications are invited every January.  

Holmes Scholars Program

In Fall 2020, UConn’s Neag School of Education was selected to join the more than 50 higher education institutions nationwide currently sponsoring the Holmes Scholars Program . The Neag School has pledged to cover the costs of sending each of its Holmes Scholars to the AACTE’s annual conference, as well as the two-day preconference exclusive to Holmes Scholars, for a minimum of three years. In addition, Holmes Scholars are funded to attend AACTE's Washington Week one time.  

Established in 1991 by the Holmes Group and supported by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), the Holmes Scholars Program seeks to provide mentorship, peer support, professional development, and rich scholarly experiences to students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds who are pursuing graduate degrees in education at AACTE member institutions. Since its inception, more than 700 Holmes Scholars have benefited from taking part in the program.  

UConn Human Rights Institute Dissertation Fellowships

In an effort to support graduate student dissertation s with a human rights focus at UConn, the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute funds at least one dissertation research fellowship and at least one dissertation writing fellowship of up to $5,000 each . The purpose of the research fellowship is to support primary research activities, including but not limited to: archival research, participant observation, interview, data collection, data set construction, ethnography, textual criticism, digital archiving, and historical preservation. The writing fellowship should be used to support the student during the time in which a majority of the dissertation is expected to be written.  

Gavin Dissertation Completion Award

This competitive award was established through the UConn Foundation by UConn alumna Dr. Kathy Gavin ’97 Ph.D., a retired associate professor in residence in mathematics, providing funding to doctoral students who are engaged in dissertation research and who have successfully defended their dissertation proposals, with the expectation that recipients anticipate defending their dissertation by end of the academic year. The award may be used to support anticipated dissertation research expenses.  

Spencer Foundation/National Academy of Education Dissertation Fellowship

The Spencer/NAE Dissertation Fellowship Program seeks to encourage a new generation of scholars from a wide range of disciplines and professional fields to undertake research relevant to the improvement of education. These $27,500 fellowships support individuals whose dissertations show potential for bringing fresh and constructive perspectives to the history, theory, analysis, or practice of formal or informal education anywhere in the world. This highly competitive program aims to identify the most talented researchers conducting dissertation research related to education.  

American Association of University Women American Fellowship

The purpose of the American Dissertation Fellowship is to offset a scholar’s living expenses while she completes her dissertation. The fellowship must be used for the final year of writing the dissertation.  

Applicants must have completed all coursework, passed all preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposals or plans by the preceding November. Students holding fellowships for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW fellowships year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study. Scholars engaged in science, technology, engineering and math fields or those researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.  

AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship Program in Education Research

The AERA Minority Dissertation Fellowship in Education Research is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are members of racial and ethnic groups historically underrepresented in higher education (e.g., African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, and Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders). Applicants can come from graduate programs and departments in education research, the humanities, or social or behavioral science disciplinary or interdisciplinary fields, such as economics, history, political science, psychology, public policy, or sociology. Eligible graduate students will be at the writing stage of their dissertation by the beginning of the fellowship. Fellows are required to provide proof of advancement to candidacy at the beginning of the award period. Applicants must work full-time on their dissertations and course requirements.  

AERA Dissertation Grants

Dissertation Grants are available for advanced doctoral students and are intended to support the student while analyzing data and writing the doctoral dissertation. Proposals are encouraged from the full range of education research fields and other fields and disciplines engaged in education-related research, including economics, political science, psychology, sociology, demography, statistics, public policy, and psychometrics. Applicants for this one-year, nonrenewable award should be advanced doctoral students at the dissertation writing stage, usually the last year of study. Applicants may be U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents enrolled in a doctoral program. Non-U.S. citizens enrolled in a doctoral program at an U.S. institution are also eligible to apply. Underrepresented racial and ethnic minority researchers as well as women, individuals with disabilities, and veterans are strongly encouraged to apply.

The overarching goal of the School of Education’s PhD in Education program is to develop scholars who will have advanced research skills for improving education practice, with specific emphases on policy analysis and education improvement. The program strives to prepare candidates that are equipped to:

  • meet the myriad challenges associated with systemic education change;
  • apply exceptional content area expertise contextualized within a comprehensive multidisciplinary frame of reference;
  • successfully bridge the theory and research to evidence-based practice gap;
  • be actively involved in public policy development and evaluation;
  • conduct research on complex databases linking educational practices to student outcomes, or lead laboratory- or school-based research programs that inform efforts to improve educational practices and student outcomes; and
  • develop national models of educational practice that guide curriculum development and educator preparation.

Admission Requirements

At minimum, applicants to the PhD program should hold a master’s degree from an accredited college or university. Previous degrees must document outstanding academic achievement in an area of study closely associated with the objectives of the program. Applicants must submit the online admission application form, application fee, and official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. If the earned degree or credit is from an educational institution abroad, the candidate’s academic record must be evaluated by a credential evaluation agency before consideration for admission. Applicants are required to earn superior scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) (taken within the past five years), present acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores (if an international student), and demonstrate potential to become top scholars. Additionally, applicants are required to submit a curriculum vitae, a personal statement (outlining professional plans, goals, and expectations related to the PhD program), dispositions survey, and three letters of reference affirming the applicant’s qualifications for advanced graduate study and potential for professional development in the field. Selected applicants who meet the entrance requirements will be invited to interview with the doctoral admissions committee.

In addition to successfully completing all the coursework requirements, candidates must also satisfy the following program benchmarks:

  • Research progress
  • Written and oral comprehensive examinations
  • Dissertation proposal oral examination
  • Graduate Board oral examination
  • Final dissertation exam

Each student will receive an annual written evaluation from the School of Education’s Doctoral Studies Committee detailing their progress in meeting the required benchmarks at the end of each spring semester.

All School of Education PhD students will devote at least four years to full-time study and research as a resident student. This period of time will provide opportunity for full engagement and participation in the academic community and allow students to develop and demonstrate the scholarly capabilities required of the degree. The typical program of study is eight semesters, with six semesters devoted to coursework and research/teaching intensive experiences and two semesters devoted primarily to independent dissertation research. Students will typically enroll in 12 hours per semester for the first three years of their program and 9 hours per semester during the fourth year of their program, for a total of 90 credit hours. All students are expected to maintain enrollment as full-time graduate students over the course of the program. With the approval of their major adviser and director of the PhD program, students may transfer up to 12 credit hours of previously completed graduate-level coursework to substitute for selected required courses in the program.

Typically, each year four-to-eight PhD students will be admitted each year to begin classes in the fall semester. The majority of required courses will be delivered on the Baltimore Homewood campus in a face-to-face format, although students may (with approval) enroll in selected elective courses in divisions throughout the university.

Students must complete qualifying exams after completing two years of study. The successful completion of the written documents and oral defense of those documents allows the student to proceed to the dissertation proposal.

Dissertation

The program is designed as an apprenticeship model leading to a traditional research dissertation. The expectation is that students will be developing the skills and background knowledge throughout the program required to pursue a traditional research dissertation. Although the dissertation is not part of the formal coursework, the program is designed to put a student on track to develop an area of expertise as the foundation for an independent research project directed by the adviser. Students are expected to complete and defend a dissertation proposal by the end of the third year of study and use the final year of the program to complete and defend the dissertation. The dissertation is expected to demonstrate mastery of the relevant literature and scholarship in the collection and interpretation of data. The work should be appropriate for publication in high impact journals in the student’s area of expertise. The dissertation will be presented at a final oral defense before the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee.

Earning a Master’s of Arts degree (MA) or doctorate (PhD) from Berkeley’s School of Education often leads to a career as an educational scholar and researcher in schools, colleges, and universities; non-profits and think tanks; and corporations.

In your application, we encourage you to describe your research interests as well as your desire to study with particular faculty in their application materials. If you wish to study educational topics outside those framed in the list below, we still encourage you to apply to earn your MA or PhD because we want innovative thinkers among us.

During the first semester, all students build a plan of study in consultation with their advisor(s). This plan is revisited, updated, and revised yearly thereafter.

What Doctoral Students Can Expect

During the first two years of study, the Berkeley PhD in Education introduces you to research on current issues in education, theories of learning, human development, and inequality, educational policy, and research methods. Students proceed through the program during the first two years in a cohort, taking core courses together.

The degree program’s structure ensures that you have a broad understanding of important topics in education and that you begin developing the research expertise needed to carry out independent research projects. You will also begin to take elective courses within and outside the BSE in your expected areas of expertise.

By the third and fourth years of study, you are expected to develop greater expertise in your research specialties in close consultation with your faculty advisors. You also take advanced seminars; engage in independent studies and research apprenticeships; and complete an oral exam.

The concluding part of your doctoral studies is preparation of your dissertation proposal and the research and writing of your dissertation.

What Master's Students Can Expect

As a Master’s student, you join the Berkeley community for one academic year, affiliating with a cluster of specialization. MA students often complete courses and their Masters projects during the summer. You are required to complete 24 semester units, which equals seven to eight classes, depending on how many units are awarded for each class.

You will have access to your faculty advisors, an MA Coordinator, and Student Services staff within the School of Education.

Johns Hopkins University has 38 graduate schools, academic programs, and specialties ranked among the top 10 in the nation, including nine with No. 1 rankings, according to the latest edition of "Best Graduate Schools" from U.S. News & World Report , published earlier today.

Two schools at Hopkins—the Bloomberg School of Public Health and the School of Nursing —earned No. 1 rankings overall, and the School of Education entered the top 10, according to U.S. News & World Report .

Portions of the publication's annual list were released today but rankings for schools of medicine and engineering were delayed and will be released at a later date.

Among the new rankings released today:

The School of Nursing's DNP program ranked No. 1 for the third year in a row. Its master's degree programs tied at No. 1, up from No. 2 last year. In gerontology, the school moved up two spots to No. 1 for primary care, and up one spot to No. 2 for acute care. In other specialty areas, the School of Nursing's doctoral programs ranked:

  • Psychiatric/mental health: No. 1
  • Family: No. 3 (tied)
  • Leadership: No. 4 (tied)
  • Nursing Anesthesia: No. 36 (tie)

Public Health

The Bloomberg School retained its longtime No. 1 overall ranking among public health programs—it has held the top spot since 1994, the year the rankings began. In specialty areas, the Bloomberg School ranked:

  • Environmental Health Sciences: No. 1
  • Epidemiology: No. 1
  • Health Policy and Management (Public Health): No. 1
  • Social and Behavioral Sciences: No. 1
  • Biostatistics: No. 2

Johns Hopkins tied at No. 8 in the Education category, up from No. 13 last year. The school also tied at No. 23 in higher education administration programs.

Public Affairs

Overall, Johns Hopkins programs in public affairs tied at No. 39. In subcategories, Johns Hopkins tied at No. 6 in Health Policy and Management (Public Affairs), No. 11 in International/Global Policy and Administration, and tied at No. 35 in Public Policy Analysis.

U.S. News & World Report updates some of its rankings each year and republishes the most recent rankings in other areas. Among the republished rankings for Hopkins, which are still current:

Biological Sciences

Hopkins is tied for No. 6 overall with six top 10 specialty rankings:

  • Molecular biology: No. 3 (tie)
  • Cell biology: No. 4
  • Neuroscience: No. 4 (tie)
  • Immunology: No. 5
  • Genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics: No. 6 (tie)
  • Biochemistry, biophysics, and structural biology: No. 8

Biostatistics

Hopkins is ranked No. 1 (tie) for Biostatistics at the doctoral level. (Note: U.S. News & World Report also ranks biostatistics as a sub-category of public health, where Hopkins is No. 2.)

The university is tied at No. 20 in Chemistry and ranks No. 9 in the Biochemistry subcategory.

Computer Science

The university is tied for No. 24 overall and tied at No. 21 in the specialty of Artificial Intelligence.

Earth Sciences

The university is tied at No. 30 in Earth Sciences.

Johns Hopkins' program in economics is tied at No. 22.

English tied at No. 13 overall with the following specialty rankings:

  • Literary criticism and theory: No. 3
  • British literature: No. 10 (tie)
  • American literature after 1865: No. 17

Health Care Management

The university is No. 7.

Johns Hopkins ranks No. 10 overall, with the following specialty rankings:

  • African-American history: No. 3 (tie)
  • Cultural history: No. 4 (tie)
  • U.S. Colonial history: No. 5 (tie)
  • Women's history: No. 6 (tie)
  • African history: No. 7 (tie)
  • European history: No. 7 (tie)
  • Modern U.S. history: No. 16 (tie)

Mathematics

Johns Hopkins is tied at No. 20 in Mathematics with the following specialty rankings: + Analysis: No. 18 (tie) + Algebra: No. 23 (tie) + Applied Math: No. 25

Overall, the university is tied at No. 13 with the following specialty rankings: + Living Systems: No. 5 (tie) + Cosmology: No. 7 + Condensed Matter: No. 13 (tie)

Political science

Overall, political science is tied at No. 41. In sub-categories, Johns Hopkins ranked: + Political theory: No. 8 (tie) + International politics: No. 24 (tie)

The university's graduate program in psychology is tied at No. 12 overall and tied at No. 5 in the subcategory of behavioral neuroscience.

Overall, sociology is tied at No. 29. The sub-category of sociology of population is tied at No. 17.
