Ph.D. Program

The ph.d. in law degree.

The Ph.D. in Law degree program is designed to prepare J.D. graduates for careers as legal scholars and teachers through a doctoral program aimed at the production of a substantial body of academic research and writing under the close supervision of a three-member faculty dissertation committee. Unlike programs designed for students who wish to learn about law from the disciplinary perspectives of the social sciences or the humanities, the Ph.D. in Law is directed at students who wish to pursue advanced studies in law from the perspective of the law. This program offers emerging scholars an opportunity to contribute to the development of law as an academic field, and it provides an alternate pathway into law teaching alongside existing routes such as fellowships, advanced degrees in cognate fields, legal practice, and clerkships.

Because our entering Ph.D. students will have already completed their J.D. degrees, the anticipated course of study toward the Ph.D. in Law degree is three academic years and two summers in residence. In their first two semesters, Ph.D. students will enroll in courses designed to help them acquire the background and research skills needed to complete a dissertation in their field of interest and to prepare them for qualifying examinations that test the depth and breadth of the literacies and skills they have acquired. During their second year, students will prepare a dissertation prospectus and begin work on a dissertation. The dissertation may take the form of either three law review articles or a book-length manuscript and will make up a portfolio of writing that will be essential for success in the job market. Ph.D. students will also gain experience in the classroom, and receive the full support of Yale Law School’s Law Teaching Program , which has had remarkable success in placing graduates in tenure-track positions at leading law schools.

Ph.D. students receive a full-tuition waiver, a health award for health insurance coverage, and a stipend to cover their year-round living expenses, as well as support for participation in national and international conferences.

Applications for admission to the Ph.D. in Law program are available starting on August 15. The deadline for submission of all materials is December 15. Applicants to the Ph.D. in Law program must complete a J.D. degree at a U.S. law school before they matriculate and begin the Ph.D. program. Any questions about the program may be directed to Gordon Silverstein, Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, at [email protected] .

Online Doctorate Degree in Legal Studies

A doctorate in legal studies prepares you for an advanced career in legal scholarship and teaching. In general, this degree is designed for professionals who already hold a juris doctor and wish to make critical contributions to their field. While a juris doctor qualifies graduates to practice law in the U.S., a legal studies doctorate prepares students for careers in research and education.

The BLS projects that jobs for professors will grow 15% by 2026.

As global, national, and local politics evolve and become more complicated, legal studies experts play critical roles in many different industries. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), jobs for lawyers are more competitive and difficult to obtain. Consequently, earning a doctoral degree in legal studies can give you an edge in the job market. A doctorate can also qualify you for law-related careers, such as college professor. The BLS projects that jobs for professors will grow 15% by 2026. By comparison, the BLS projects that jobs for lawyers will grow only 8% in the same timeframe.

Choosing a Doctorate in Legal Studies

An online doctorate in legal studies focuses on the relationship between law and various races, cultures, and socioeconomic classes. The degree also covers the history and the current state of the U.S. legal system. Occasionally, individuals may refer to a doctorate in legal studies as a doctorate in law or a doctor of juridical science. Students in these programs typically design, pursue, and present research in their chosen topic. Some legal studies programs allow you to specialize in areas such as ethnic studies, psychology, or public policy. Students pursuing doctoral legal studies degrees online also write dissertations about their findings.

While researching online doctorate in legal studies programs, keep in mind that the location usually affects program cost. Attending an in-state school is typically cheaper than attending an out-of-state school, since in-state schools often offer discounted tuition for residents. Pursuing an online program instead of an on-campus program may also help you save money. Online courses allow you to live anywhere and work from home. Consequently, you can avoid transportation costs and the higher costs of living in some college towns.

Legal studies programs may follow an online, hybrid, or on-campus format. Fully online programs allow you to complete your coursework from anywhere, according to your own schedule. Hybrid programs combine the freedom and flexibility of online programs with certain in-person components. Completely on-campus programs provide the most structure and hands-on guidance.

Sample Courses for a Doctorate in Legal Studies

Courses vary depending on which online doctorate in legal studies you choose. Most online legal studies degrees require intensive independent study, one-on-one work with an adviser, and supervised teaching or research. The list below describes a few courses you might encounter.

Example Courses

How long does it take to earn an online doctorate in legal studies.

Students can complete an online doctorate in legal studies in three to six years. Program length largely depends on the time you take to complete your dissertation. Students complete dissertations independently, although they often receive assistance from a faculty member. Candidates typically take between one and four years to research, write, and defend their project.

Delivery format can also affect program length. An individually paced program allows you to complete coursework as quickly or slowly as you would like. In a cohort learning program, students move through courses at the same time as a group of their peers. Program length can also vary based on teaching practicums, internships, or other fieldwork requirements.

S.J.D. Program

The Doctor of Juridical Science (S.J.D.) is Harvard Law School’s most advanced law degree, designed for aspiring legal academics who wish to pursue sustained independent study, research and writing. In recent years we have created a vibrant intellectual community of young scholars from around the world, most of whom will secure teaching positions in their home countries, the U.S., or third countries. We typically have around 60 S.J.D. candidates (most of whom are in residence) representing 25-30 countries, drawn primarily from among Harvard’s top LL.M. graduates. Ultimately, candidates are expected to produce a dissertation that will constitute a substantial and valuable contribution to legal scholarship.

There are five stages to the S.J.D. program:

  • Completion of a study plan which includes course work
  • Successful completion of an oral examination
  • Two presentations at the S.J.D. Colloquium
  • Submission and acceptance of a doctoral dissertation
  • Successful oral defense of the dissertation

The first two of these requirements—preparation and completion of a study plan, and successful completion of the oral (general) examination—are normally completed during the first year or two of study. The S.J.D. candidate normally completes the remaining requirements—presentations at the S.J.D. colloquium, submission and acceptance of the dissertation, and oral defense of the dissertation—during the three years after completion of the oral examination.

Each S.J.D. candidate pursues the degree under the supervision of an overall faculty supervisor selected by the candidate and approved by the Committee on Graduate Studies. This supervisor must be a full-time member of the Harvard Law School faculty.

Doctoral Student: I think law school in general always goes from bad to better over time. I started out really confused and anxious, and I don't think I really took advantage of what UCLA Law offered while I was a 1L. Instead, I spent too much time trying to figure out everything on my own, which didn't work out so great for my grades or for my mental health. I felt things really turn around when I was able to do experiential coursework as a 2L because I felt like I was really functioning as a law student. UCLA's experiential courses and options really made my law school experience so much better than it would've been if I just took doctrinal classes. ... Read 3 reviews

Master's Student: The other students and most of the faculty were very kind and supportive. My only issue with the program is due to a lack of funding there were very few course options offered. I wish that humanities programs were offered more funding because it is unfair to students who pay the same as STEM students to attend the institution but are not offered the same chances to deeply enrich and develop their education. Luckily the professors were very open to allowing students to explore their own personal interests to the fullest and allow them to focus more on their specializations than on the core course curriculum. ... Graduate Program

Jurisprudence & social policy graduate program, april 12, 2024, march 8, 2024, march 4, 2024, february 28, 2024, february 7, 2024.

Berkeley Law offers a unique interdisciplinary program of graduate study in law and society, leading to the Ph.D. degree in Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP) . The JSP Program promotes the study of law and legal institutions through the perspectives of several disciplines, including economics, political science, philosophy, sociology, history, psychology, and criminal justice

The Jurisprudence and Social Policy Ph.D. is ideal for students interested in:

The scholarly study of legal ideas and institutions from the standpoint of one or more of the basic disciplines, such as, history, economics, philosophy, sociology, or political science.

Policy analysis and applied research on law-related issues in such fields as criminal justice, poverty and discrimination, human rights, urban planning, and environmental protection.

Preparation for teaching legal studies in graduate and undergraduate curriculums.

Interdisciplinary preparation for teaching law.

A Note from Associate Dean Dylan Penningroth:

Thanks for visiting our website.  The Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP) Program is a unique doctoral program focused on the interdisciplinary study of law. JSP is housed within the School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, but organized under UC Berkeley’s Graduate Division. Established in 1978, JSP was the first law-focused PhD program in the United States and continues to be the leading program of its kind anywhere.

By integrating the study of law with the humanities and social sciences, JSP seeks a broad context for understanding and developing legal policy. While there are many productive ways to link law to the research tools of the disciplines, we are committed to pursuing plural, interdisciplinary scholarship that includes humanistic and social scientific approaches to the study of law. Our students generally specialize in some portion of this spectrum while learning from teachers and peers with diverse research interests. Students take a mix of interdisciplinary courses offered within JSP, as well as classes in the Law School’s traditional JD curriculum. These and other features of our program have become a model for other doctoral programs in interdisciplinary legal studies, many of which have recruited our alumni for their faculties.

JSP faculty are leading scholars in their field who hail from a variety of disciplines – including political science, sociology, economics, history, philosophy, and psychology. Beginning with the JSP Orientation Seminar and through a range of course offerings in the humanities and social sciences, we offer students training in both empirical and normative analysis of law. Over the past decade, JSP has grown, adding faculty who offer a range of cutting-edge courses in quantitative and qualitative research methods and research design that are specially oriented to the study of law. Our substantive course offerings also have increased in scope, pushing the boundaries of knowledge across multiple fields.

JSP is closely integrated with the Center for the Study of Law and Society (CSLS), which attracts visiting scholars from all over the world, hosts one of the most dynamic speaker series on campus, and provides an intellectual hub for top-notch research on law and legal institutions. CSLS also offers the Berkeley Empirical Legal Studies (BELS) Graduate Fellowship, which brings together doctoral students studying law and social science from JSP and other programs on the Berkeley campus in a year-long research workshop. Berkeley Law is also home to a vibrant array of other research centers dedicated to issues ranging from law, energy, and the environment to reproductive rights and justice; from law and business to law and social justice; from law, morality, and public affairs to law and technology.

This is an extraordinary time for scholars and students who have interdisciplinary training in law. The collective challenges confronting us today span diverse legal systems, fields of expertise, cultures, and regions of the world. In this context, the training we provide is not only an advantage for a professional career in academia, public service, or policy advocacy, but also urgently needed kindling for innovative theorizing, creative problem-solving, and breakthrough empirical research.

On this website you can get to know our students and our faculty and learn more about the JSP program by viewing recent course offerings and upcoming conferences. I especially urge you to learn more about our advanced graduate students currently on the academic job market, as well as our alumni. Nothing reflects so well on our program as our graduates, and what they are accomplishing with their training here at Berkeley continues to inspire us.

If you have any questions about the JSP Program, please feel welcome to contact me, our Graduate Advisor, Sarah Song, or our Graduate Student Advisor, Michael Paz.

Law PhD by Distance Learning

What is a phd by distance learning.

A PhD by Distance Learning allows you to undertake the majority of your research at an off-campus location. You are therefore able to do the research required for your PhD in a location of your choosing; only making one annual visit to the University.

Why study by distance learning?

The main advantage of studying by distance learning is the opportunity to undertake research supervised by one of our world-renowned academics without having to relocate geographically to the Birmingham region. The flexibility offered by distance learning will allow you to combine study with other commitments, including work and family.

Is the distance learning route for you?

The distance learning route to PhD study is not for everyone. You need to have a very clear idea of your research project and be able to motivate yourself. Undertaking PhD study off campus can sometimes be quite isolating, so the ability to proactively seek out connections from within relevant research communities is important. This route is well-suited to those who have a project associated with their work or particular interests and where resources are available locally to support your research e.g. appropriate archives and data collections.

Can I study by Distance Learning in the UK?

Distance Learning courses can be undertaken from anywhere in the world, including the UK.

However, it is worth noting that supervisory sessions for Distance Learning students will take place via audiovisual communications, such as Skype or Facetime, rather than in person.

While this 21st Century approach has proved effective, for those applicants who would prefer to visit the campus for face-to-face meetings with their supervisor, the traditional part-time study option would be more appropriate.

  • One return economy flight per year for the required two-week campus visit in September
  • Accommodation at the University for the required two-week campus visit in September
  • One return economy flight at the end of the study period for the three-day PhD viva examination
  • Accommodation at the University for the three-day viva examination

How will I be supported?

You will receive the same level of support and supervision as on-campus students. The only difference is that supervisory sessions will take place via audio and visual communication services such as Skype or Facetime, rather than in person.

When would I start?

We encourage you to start your PhD in the month of September so that you can attend an induction along with other PhD candidates beginning their research at the same time as you. However, other arrangements may be possible with agreement from your supervisor.

How often will I need to be on campus?

Although you may be able to undertake the majority of your study at an off-campus location, you will be fully funded to make one compulsory visit to the University per year of study. This will enable you to meet your supervisory team, undertake intensive research skills training and make a start on your doctoral studies. You will then be invited to attend the University for annual meetings which will give you the opportunity to interact with other doctoral students both socially and academically, undertake important progress meetings and carry out necessary training. You will also generally be required to be present on campus for your viva voce.

Am I eligible?

Before we can offer you a place it is important that you have agreement from your potential supervisor and that they are satisfied that you will be able to undertake the PhD on an off-campus basis. This may mean that slightly different entry requirements apply, such as English language and more extensive research skills training. Agreements will also need to be reached regarding some of the more practical aspects of undertaking the PhD in this way (for example attendance requirements, suitability of the chosen residency etc). It is important that arrangements are discussed early so that all parties involved know what to expect and to ensure you are able to successfully complete your studies.

Professionals with legal knowledge can guide organizations as they navigate regulations and address risks, making invaluable contributions in fields such as compliance, human resources, real estate, technology, and finance. A 2022 Lightcast™ report showed a significant increase in demand for legal skills over the previous five years and projected further growth of nearly 6 percent through 2024. A law degree is necessary to practice law, but it is more than most professionals need if their goal is to interact with lawyers and the legal system with sophistication and confidence.

The online Master of Legal Studies (MLS) program from Vanderbilt Law School provides non-lawyers with a deeper understanding of American law and legal systems. Created from the ground up by Vanderbilt’s top ranked law school faculty, the MLS curriculum emphasizes both foundational legal principles and insights into areas of law that are most relevant to working professionals.

Vanderbilt’s MLS provides you with the knowledge and skills to recognize and navigate legal issues. MLS students develop the vocabulary to improve communication with lawyers and the analytical tools to evaluate legal complexity. For example, students learn about contracts, employment law, regulations, property rights, torts and the structure of the legal system, among other core topics.

Join Vanderbilt Law School’s online MLS and study how to:

  • Analyze and interpret law-related problems
  • Navigate regulatory compliance
  • Build business acumen
  • Identify areas of risk
  • Collaborate effectively with counsel
  • Locate and evaluate legal texts

phd in legal studies online

The online MLS program can be completed in less than two years, part-time. Classes are taken one at a time, and most class content is available for asynchronous learning. You will connect with classmates through biweekly class sessions and discussion boards. During the program, you will also have the option to complete a short course at our campus in Nashville, giving you the chance to network with faculty and peers.

“As we’ve developed this online degree program, we have invested heavily in understanding the gold standard of online education and recognize that online classes should not be simply videotaped versions of in-person classes. In fact, they should be intentionally designed from the ground up to be interactive and responsive, integrating readings, videos, quizzes, and discussion posts. All the classes in the curriculum follow this pedagogical approach.” Christopher Serkin Elisabeth H. and Granville S. Ridley Jr. Chair in Law

Master of Legal Studies Careers

Vanderbilt Law School’s online MLS develops specialized knowledge so professionals better understand and evaluate law-related problems, and know when to seek the advice of counsel. With this background, MLS graduates may advance their careers by navigating regulatory compliance and facilitating interactions between businesses and the legal system.

An MLS degree is applicable to a variety of careers that engage with the law, including:

  • Compliance officer
  • Contracts manager
  • Corporate executive
  • Human resources manager
  • Policy analyst
  • Probation officer
  • Real estate professional
  • Social worker

Juris Doctorate Versus Master of Legal Studies

A Juris Doctorate (JD) and a Master of Legal Studies (MLS) are both valuable degrees, but used for entirely different professional outcomes. A JD prepares you to pass a bar exam and practice law. An MLS degree instead gives professionals who do not plan to practice law a robust introduction to the legal system. This curriculum connects non-lawyers with the expertise of top legal scholars, delving into legal questions about the rights and obligations of individuals as well as businesses.

Master's Degree in Criminal Justice - Legal Studies

Why choose a criminal justice degree with a legal studies specialization.

Learn law enforcement skills to manage complex global risks and disasters. The College of Education & Social Services offers several competitive, quality graduate degree programs, and the online MS in Criminal Justice with a legal studies specialization is no exception.

In light of recent disasters and world events, it is increasingly important for criminal justice administrators, first responders, government officials, and organizations to understand how to manage critical incidents, psychological aspects of disasters, hazard mitigation, and risk identification.

Saint Leo University's criminal justice program director, Dr. Robert J. Diemer, has nearly 30 years of varied investigative experience, and is known across Florida and, increasingly, among national law enforcement at local, state, and federal agency levels. Dr. Diemer has served as a Deputy Sheriff, State Coordinator for the Florida Sheriff’s Association Statewide Task Force, and Chief of Investigations for the Florida Department of Environmental Protections Division of Law Enforcement. Dr. Diemer was also responsible for managing and coordinating the operations of the Florida Department of Environmental Protections Environmental Terrorism Response Team.

One of the leading military colleges in the United States, Saint Leo University has been educating criminal justice professionals for more than three decades. In the Catholic spirit, we base our criminal justice model on a steadfast moral consciousness that recognizes the dignity, value, and gifts of all people.

Master's in Criminal Justice Program Details

The curriculum is designed for criminal justice administrators, first responders, government officials, correctional officers, probation and parole officers, and those individuals who have an interest in further understanding the role of the legal system within the United States. This course of study will provide students with a well-rounded understanding of legal procedures and how the judicial system operates within the civil and criminal domain.
