As part of your application to the School of Nursing Graduate Program (MSN or PhD Nursing) at UBC Okanagan, you will write a short letter of intent that addresses the area of interest you intend to pursue during your studies. Key points to cover in a letter of intent are:

  • Briefly describe your interest in applying to UBC Okanagan to pursue a master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. How will this degree enable you to accomplish your professional and/or academic career goals?
  • If you are applying to the course-based MSN : explain the areas that you want to focus on though your coursework and capstone project. Include details, using scholarly sources, on the relevance of your focus to current priorities in nursing, healthcare and/or public health.
  • If you are applying to the thesis-based MSN or PhD Nursing program : explain an area of interest you intend to pursue in your thesis research. Include details, using scholarly sources, on the relevance of your proposed research to current priorities in nursing, healthcare and/or public health. Provide a brief description of your proposed research question and methodological approach. Identify the School of Nursing faculty member who has agreed to supervise your proposed research project and describe how their program of research and scholarship fit with your proposed scholarly work.

The School of Population and Public Health offers a research-oriented PhD program that enables students with a masters degree to advance their knowledge and skills in epidemiological and biostatistical methods. Students will further their research training by applying these methods to independent thesis research under the supervision of a faculty member. Students can pursue thesis research in a wide variety of topics related to the health of populations and the delivery of health services.

The Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies establishes the minimum admission requirements common to all applicants, usually a minimum overall average in the B+ range (76% at UBC). Program Funding Packages

From September 2024 all full-time students in UBC-Vancouver PhD programs will be provided with a funding package of at least $24,000 for each of the first four years of their PhD. The funding package may consist of any combination of internal or external awards, teaching-related work, research assistantships, and graduate academic assistantships. Please note that many graduate programs provide funding packages that are substantially greater than $24,000 per year. Please check with your prospective graduate program for specific details of the funding provided to its PhD students.

Average Funding

  • 24 students received Teaching Assistantships. Average TA funding based on 24 students was $6,707.
  • 38 students received Research Assistantships. Average RA funding based on 38 students was $18,770.
  • 17 students received Academic Assistantships. Average AA funding based on 17 students was $5,352.
  • 57 students received internal awards. Average internal award funding based on 57 students was $10,782.
  • 22 students received external awards. Average external award funding based on 22 students was $28,705.

Scholarships & awards (merit-based funding)

All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.

Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA)

Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA)

Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .

Graduate Academic Assistantships (GAA)

Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.

Financial aid (need-based funding)

Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .

All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.

Foreign government scholarships

Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.

Working while studying

The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.

International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.

A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .

Tax credits and RRSP withdrawals

Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.

Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.

The UBC School of Nursing offers an innovative and advanced program designed to prepare leaders in nursing practice. As a nursing student, you’ll be exposed to the latest technology, encouraged by leading academic scholars and teachers, and provided with a broad range of resources.

Through classroom study and clinical practice in acute care and community settings, you will graduate highly prepared to practise as a registered nurse in an ever changing health care environment. You’ll learn from faculty members who are continually recognized for ground-breaking and dedicated work to these substantive areas of nursing including primary health as well as theoretical and relational practice, research, leadership, policy and ethics.

To be considered for admission, applicants must have a completed bachelor’s degree or significant progress (minimum of 48 non-nursing university transferable credits) toward a degree in another field of study, including first-year English (3 credits), and Human Anatomy and Physiology (6 credits). The School of Nursing accepts applications from domestic students only (Canadian citizens, permanent residents, and refugees).

Experiential learning and research

The UBC School of Nursing is nationally and internationally recognized for research that sheds light on the health care experiences and health outcomes of diverse socio-economic and demographic groups across Canada, and for creating health care and policy solutions to reduce health disparities and improve well-being across the lifespan.

The Clinical Simulation Lab (CSL) within the school supports the teaching and learning of the required skills and competencies for professional nursing practice. The school uses high fidelity simulation (HFS) technology in many learning activities in the CSL to simulate real world situations and patient encounters.

Director, School of Nursing    Elizabeth Saewyc

Director, UBC School of Nursing is responsible for all aspects of academic, personnel and fiscal operation of the School of Nursing. This responsibility involves close liaison with the Dean, Faculty of Applied Science as well as with other levels of UBC, health authority and government offices. Dr. Campbell works closely with the Associate Directors of the Graduate and Undergraduate Programs as well as the School’s research program to ensure that UBC nursing students receive the highest level of education possible.

Associate Director Undergraduate Program   Elisabeth Bailey

The associate director is responsible for the overall strategic management and resourcing of the undergraduate program and has particular responsibilities for admissions, curriculum development and evaluation, and student progressions. The associate director reports to the director.

Program Coordinator  Sheila McBurney

The Program coordinator is responsible for the overall operational management of the BSN program with particular responsibilities for the day to day management of the program and support of course leaders, teachers and students. The Program Coordinator works under the direction of the Associate Director and Director, and is a first point of contact for course leaders with issues relating to student progression, or other course related operational matters.

Responds to external program inquiries from potential applicants and others. Develops and implements recruitment strategies and participates in university activities related to program promotion. Serves as a resource person for other university departments.

Academic Advisor   Carla Ferreira

Interprets university and school policies for enrolled students. Assists, responds and/or refers, as appropriate, students with personal and/or health problems influencing progression, and offers advice/referral, as appropriate, for academic issues. Supports students facing progression issues by providing them with pertinent information and representing their concerns to the BSN Progressions Committee. Advises the Program Coordinator and the Associate Director of pertinent issues that may affect a student’s progression. Collaborates with the Program Coordinator & Student Support Office to integrate students returning to the BSN program after an absence.

Course Leaders are responsible for academic oversight of the theoretical learning activities associated with a course. Course Leaders for Clinical Practice courses are responsible for planning and coordinating an appropriate range of clinical practice, clinical skills lab, and simulation learning experiences to meet course and program objectives. They also provide orientation, guidance and ongoing mentorship to Clinical Associates in their clinical teaching role.

Nursing Rises in ‘U.S. News’ Best Graduate Schools Rankings

Continuing its mission of shaping the nursing profession and the health care environment by developing leaders in education, research, and practice, the University of Maryland School of Nursing (UMSON) has again ranked in the top 10 across the board for public schools of nursing — and moved up in all six categories in which the school is ranked — in the newly released 2024 edition of U.S. News & World Report ’s “ America’s Best Graduate Schools ,” out of 651 accredited nursing schools surveyed.

Both UMSON’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) and its Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs climbed in the rankings among all schools surveyed, with DNP tied at No. 8 (up from No. 15 last year) and MSN at No. 20 overall (up from No. 25 last year). Among public schools of nursing, the DNP program is tied at No. 4 and the MSN is ranked No. 9.

Two UMSON specialties lead the way in the rankings, both ranked No. 1 (tied) nationwide among public schools of nursing:

  • The DNP Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner specialty, tied at No. 4 among all ranked schools
  • The MSN Health Services Leadership and Management specialty, No. 2 among all ranked schools

UMSON also is ranked in the top 10 among public schools of nursing for its:

  • Family Nurse Practitioner Doctor of Nursing Practice specialty (No. 3)
  • DNP Nurse Anesthesia specialty (No. 7, tied)

“It is gratifying to continue to be recognized nationally for our Doctor of Nursing Practice program and our Master of Science in Nursing program,” said Yolanda Ogbolu, PhD, NNP, FNAP, FAAN , the Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University of Maryland School of Nursing. “The School of Nursing plays a vital role in our collective efforts in Maryland and nationally to increase the number of nurses with advanced education, particularly at the doctoral level. It is essential that we have nurses who are well prepared to meet the changing needs of patients, their families, and our communities at a time when we face increasing complexity in our health care system, growing diversity in our population, and persistent gaps in access to needed care.”

The U.S. News & World Report rankings are based on a variety of indicators, including student selectivity and program size, faculty resources, and research activity, and on survey data from deans of schools of nursing that are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.

In fall 2023 and early 2024, U.S. News surveyed 651 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs. In total, 292 nursing programs responded to the survey. Of those, 216 provided enough data to be included in the rankings of nursing master’s programs and 188 provided enough data to be eligible for inclusion in the ranking of DNP programs. Many institutions were ranked in both, using overlapping data.

UR Nursing Lands at No. 21 in National Ranking of Master’s Programs

The University of Rochester School of Nursing has been ranked No. 21 among U.S. nursing schools for its master’s programs, according to the 2024-25 Best Graduate Schools guide produced by U.S. News and World Report. Designed for prospective students looking to advance their nursing education, the Best Graduate Schools rankings evaluate programs based on academic quality and research success.

“We are incredibly proud of the recent rankings that highlight the excellence of our master’s programs,” said Dean Lisa Kitko, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN . “While we are pleased with these results, they are just one measure of our ongoing progress and dedication to shaping the future of nursing. We continue to focus our efforts on equipping our students with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to thrive in their careers while providing flexible ways to study as practicing nurses.”  

The No. 1 program in Upstate New York for five years, the UR School of Nursing is one of only two institutions in the state — and the only one outside of New York City — ranked in the top 30 for its master’s programs. It features one of the oldest and most prominent nurse practitioner programs in the country and currently enrolls nearly 300 students across six NP specialties and degree concentrations in nursing education and leadership . 

The recent rankings feature an increased emphasis on program size, research activity, student excellence, and faculty resources while reducing emphasis on reputation from previous year’s rankings.   "Our faculty's expertise and the high quality clinical and experiential learning that our programs offer have been instrumental in the success of our master's nursing programs,” said Lydia Rotondo, DNP, RN, CNS, FNAP, associate dean for education and student affairs. “Our faculty’s commitment to educational excellence combined with strong academic-practice partnerships enriches our learning environment. Working closely with our students and an extensive network of clinical partners, we are redefining nursing education to prepare our master’s graduates for the challenges of tomorrow's health care." 

Other metrics considered in the rankings include student to faculty ratio and percentages of faculty with important academic achievements in the nursing profession and who are active in nursing practice. About 86 percent of faculty at the UR School of Nursing actively practice in various clinical settings.

In addition to smaller class sizes and guaranteed clinical placements – in the UR Medicine system and other health care facilities across New York – master’s students can access one-on-one faculty support on career planning, writing, or test-taking through the school’s Center for Academic & Professional Success. UR Nursing master’s students hold an average 3.74 GPA from their undergraduate program and, in 2022, more than 90 percent of students successfully passed their national certification exam on the first try.    Prospective students can review master's programs offered by the UR School of Nursing, and read how the school compares to other institutions and how the rankings are calculated on USNews.com .

How the University of Tennessee's graduate programs fared in 2024 national rankings

Graduate programs and schools at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville ranked highly in new rankings from U.S. News and World Report.

The organization released its " 2024-2025 Best Graduate Schools " report April 9, which ranks graduate programs and schools across public and private universities nationally. The report covers programs and schools in business, education and law. The rankings for engineering, medical and psychology will be updated later this year.

The top graduate program at UT is supply chain, which ranked fourth nationally. The Haslam College of Business tied for 47th for its full-time graduate programs.

The College of Social Work tied for 24th nationally, and the College of Law tied for 52nd nationally.

The College of Nursing doctoral program tied for 34th.

UT graduate programs ranked high among public universities

Narrowing down to just public universities, several programs and schools jumped in rankings.

Among public universities, the Haslam College of Business ranked 22nd for full-time graduate school programs and supply chain programs ranked third.

Additionally, the College of Social Work ranked 13th, the College of Nursing doctoral program ranked 24th and the College of Law ranked 26th among public universities.

Under the College of Law, legal clinical programs ranked eighth, business-corporate law ranked 13th, health care law ranked 21st and legal writing ranked 21st.

“The rankings this year provide evidence that UT has exceptional graduate programs across a wide range of disciplines,” dean of the Graduate School Dixie Thompson said in a press release. “These rankings are a reflection of the commitment to excellence made by our faculty, staff and students.”

Previous rankings for University of Tennessee graduate programs

UT has several programs ranked highly from previous years.

Printmaking programs are tied for UT's highest overall program ranking at fourth nationally.

Nuclear engineering at seventh. UT occupies the 10th spot for "Best Library and Information Studies Programs," along with school library media tied at 13th and digital librarianship tied at 14th. Under the law school, clinical training tied for 19th.

A few of UT's graduate schools are still ranked from previous years:

  • College of Veterinary Medicine tied for 21st
  • Physics (in the College of Arts and Sciences) tied for 55th
  • Tickle College of Engineering tied for 55th

What is the U.S. News and World Report?

U.S. News and World Report is a media company well known for its "Best" rankings, including university rankings for prospective students. For the "Best Graduate Schools" rankings, the organization evaluates programs and schools in disciplines including business, education, engineering, law and nursing based on expert opinion and statistical data.

Research for these rankings began in fall 2023 through early 2024. The organization used surveys of 2,225 programs sent to approximately 5,766 academics and 10,941 professionals to rank the programs within the six main disciplines.

Correction: A previous version misstated which graduate programs and schools received new rankings at the University of Tennessee. UT's business, law and social work colleges and the nursing doctoral program had new rankings.

KINGSTON, R.I. — April 9, 2024 — The University of Rhode Island College of Nursing graduate programs are again ranked among the top of nursing colleges in the country, making an impressive year-over-year rise, according to the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings.

The College’s Doctor of Nursing Practice program is tied at number 66 of 354 nursing schools across the country with a DNP program, up from number 86 last year, according to the rankings released April 9. The College’s master’s program also continued its impressive performance in recent years. For the third year in a row, the program ranks among the top 50 in the nation, slotting in at number 48 among 603 nursing schools surveyed.

“We are committed to providing an excellent education to all our students, including our graduate students who benefit from our top-notch facilities and some of the best educators in their field,” said Dean Danny Willis . “Education is transformative, and students are not just a number to us. We get to know them and facilitate their professional and personal success. It is very rewarding to see the College’s efforts recognized on a national level.”

U.S. News & World Report , among the leading authorities in college and university rankings, surveyed 648 nursing schools with master’s or doctoral programs accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The publication determined each school’s overall rank using 15 distinct ranking factors, including faculty credentials, student-to-faculty ratio, faculty research prowess and nursing practice experience, assessment scores from peer institutions, and more.

The URI College of Nursing met and exceeded the standards as it continues to increase its offerings at the undergraduate and graduate level. About one-third of the URI College of Nursing’s faculty members are recognized Fellows in national nursing organizations, including the American Academy of Nursing, for their distinguished academic achievements. Dozens of URI students were inducted in the Sigma Theta Tau honor society for nursing last year, and a handful were inducted into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. The number of faculty publications, funded external grants and committed gifts to the College have all increased over the last five years as the College continues to have major impacts on health and health care.

The advancements the College has made are obvious not only in the graduate programs, but in its undergraduate offerings as well. The College’s B.S. in Nursing program tied at number 67 out of 656 programs in the country for the second year in a row, in rankings released Sept. 17. The College has made an impressive rise in the rankings, climbing from number 96 just two years ago, the first year the publication ranked undergraduate programs, to 67 last year.
