PhD programmes
When you apply for a phd programme in sweden, youâre actually applying for a job. yeah, you read that right. đ.
âDo a masterâs here â Iâd say itâs a very good step to doing a PhD in Sweden. I did my masterâs at Malmö University and now Iâm doing a PhD at Lund Universityâ â Sanjay, Malmö University. Photo: Oskar Omne
So that means â no tuition fees, no scholarships. But youâll receive a monthly salary instead. Nice, eh? And thatâs why available PhD positions are listed on a universityâs job board.
How to apply for a PhD position? Youâll apply directly to the university.
Just so you know, thereâs no centralised application process. And things like requirements and application dates? This kind of stuff is decided by each department. But we do know that youâll need to have a masterâs degree â in the same field of study â and a great level of English to apply for a PhD here. You might even need to be fluent in Swedish. But thatâll depend on the subject.

Employment as a doctoral student
As a general rule, a person admitted to doctoral studies at Lund University is employed through a doctoral studentship.
If you have a doctoral studentship, you are considered to be both a student and an employee with a salary during your doctoral studies. As an employed doctoral student, you are covered by local and central agreements concerning your terms of employment.
In parallel to the doctoral education programme, as a doctoral student you may work with administrative and teaching duties (no more than 20% of a full-time position).

Department of Education
Phd programme overview.
In Sweden, applicants apply competitively for paid positions as PhD students . The PhD students receive a salary for a maximum of 48 months/8 semesters/4 years (the starting salary is 28,000 SEK per month). Salaries are set according to the Stockholm University salary scale for PhD students.
The PhD programme consists of 240 Swedish higher education credits. The course work amounts to a third of the programme - 90 course credits â of which 52.5 credits consists of required courses and 37.5 are elective course credits. PhD students are expected to complete the required courses during the first two years of the programme. Their education, including course work and actual research, is conducted during weekdays and is mainly done on campus.
Our doctoral students have three supervisors cooperating and providing different skills in an effort to support the PhD student to become a proficient researcher in Education. A PhD student is expected to work independently to a high extent and receives supervision about 1-2 times per month.
Together with their supervisors, PhD students can choose elective courses in relation to their specific area of research. Students may choose elective courses among the courses offered by our department or by other departments/universities in both Sweden and abroad.
A PhD student is expected to engage in the research seminars at the department and cooperate with peers in creating a rich social environment with interesting and challenging discussions.
During the programme, PhD students are expected to present their research at, at least one international conference.
Please note that doctoral studies are only offered on campus. It is not possible to enrol through distance learning. Doctoral students are expected to actively participate in the departmental research environment through regularly participating in seminars.

Renaming postdocs and PhD students would boost respect, pay, progression
What other industry would deem those with so much prior training to still be mere trainees letâs call them what they are â researchers, says michele nardin.

What is a âpostdocâ? How is one different from a PhD student? And do they really have any marketable skills?Â
The answers to these questions might be obvious to those of us within academia, but I can assure you from personal experience that the same is not true elsewhere â including, sometimes, in the very industries that would benefit from early-career researchersâ services. Â
If they donât have academic research backgrounds themselves, even high-tech employers are often unaware that PhD students and postdoctoral researchers carry out the bulk of day-to-day scientific enquiries â often working extremely long hours , including over weekends and holidays.
Within academic science, we typically regard even postdocs as mere trainees and, accordingly, pay them poorly . This is absurd. Imagine any other employer that treated anyone who was not a senior administrator as a mere trainee even after a decade of study (the average age of PhD recipients in the US Â hovers just above 31) and many years of work experience. Yes, good science requires time and expertise, which is why collaborations and mentorship are so important. However, acknowledging the full professional stature of young researchers is equally important.Â
A big part of that should involve a re-evaluation of job titles. The terminology used to describe early-career researchers is more than a mere label; it shapes perceptions and realities. Within academia, the titles âPhD studentâ and âpostdocâ obscure the professional nature and expertise of these roles and perpetuate a hierarchy that unacceptably extends the period of âtrainingâ and justifies lower compensation and precarious contracts. Â
For individual early-career researchers, this endless sense of ânot being preparedâ or ânot being good enoughâ for tenure-track positions sustains a cycle of insecurity and devaluation , characterised by low self-confidence and doubts about oneâs âreal-worldâ value, all of which damages our mental health .Â
Moreover, existing early-career titles make it hard for people outside academia to know what young researchers actually do. Most seriously, this complicates the transition to a job outside academia because companies judge PhD holders and postdocs as simultaneously over-qualified and apparently lacking any real work experience. Yes, the competition for principal investigator (PI) positions is pushing more and more people to make that transition, but that doesnât mean academic nomenclature is not a barrier to doing so successfully. I and most of my colleagues have found ourselves having to explain to potential employers that we are, in fact, experienced, independent researchers and not just unthinking apprentices to our all-knowing masters.Â
A very low-cost way to alleviate such misunderstandings would be to refer to a PhD student as a âjunior researcherâ and a postdoc as, simply, a âresearcherâ â instead of a âpostdoctoral researcherâ, which is all too commonly abbreviated to the much more opaque âpostdocâ. Varying degrees of experience could easily be incorporated into this basic nomenclature, such as âindependent researcherâ or âsenior researcherâ: titles that could be bestowed by departments as people progress. Â
As well as offering immediate clarity about the roles and aiding in the transition to industry, such clarified titles would lay the groundwork for fair compensation â including for PhD students â and the establishment of clear career pathways within academia, including the creation of more long-term, senior research positions below the group leader level.Â
An objection might be that calling PhD students junior researchers would be similar to calling medical students âjunior doctorsâ or law students âjunior lawyersâ, which would be genuinely misleading about their level of experience and expertise. Thatâs a fair observation, but there is a fundamental difference. For a PhD student, the period of taking lectures and exams, if it exists at all, is limited to the very beginning of the doctoral period, beyond which they become semi-autonomous researchers and the workhorses of their bossesâ labs. Â
Redefining early-career researchersâ job titles is a simple and low-cost step towards enhancing young researchersâ self-perception and improving public understanding of their work. Let this be a call to action for academic institutions across the globe to reconsider outdated titles and embrace a nomenclature that truly reflects the contributions and status of their researchers.Â
Michele Nardin is a Janelia Theory Fellow (independent researcher) at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Janelia Research Campus, Virginia.
