All You Want to Know about Kindergarten Oral Presentations

People look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them that I have my students present throughout the year. Yes, public speaking in Kindergarten.

Mind blown.

They can actually do it…and they are amazing.

Here are reasons that I do oral presentations in my room:

1. Most adults can’t do it well and are less afraid of DYING than they are to get up and talk in front of their peers.

2. It teaches students (at an early age) the value of respecting their peers when they are speaking.

3 . It builds confidence at an early age in ways that I could have never imagined.

4. It’s a skill that can be built on and refined throughout an entire school year.

5 . It makes me cry every year.

Here are the 4 P’s of Presenting that we talk about before the first presentation:

Before the first presentation is due (and I give them roughly 2-3 weeks notice so parents can practice with them at home), I do a model presentation of how I want them to speak. They do a thumbs-up/thumbs-down when I am showing one of the 4 P’s. I get on the carpet and make a fool of myself not following the “Polite Participation” P. They always think it is a big ball of fun when I’m rolling around and acting crazy. Then, we all practice showing the speaker polite participation.

I show these posters before every presentation and we talk about our strengths and weaknesses from the last time. Since this was our first one, we couldn’t reflect before..but we sure could after!

These are the rubrics that I mark on and send home to parents.

 A lot of you have asked me if they prepare these at home. And the answer to that question is, yes. They work on it for a few weeks before they have to present at home. They create their own visuals (student created!!!!!…can’t stress that enough!).

This can be done at school with some time carved out and teaching them how to practice with each other. As my husband always says, “It’s all about where you see value.”

This is somewhere that I see BIG major huge value.

They have a topic for each month:

September- My Family October- My Favorite Place to Visit November- My Family Traditions December-My Favorite Movie January- My Favorite Toy February-Famous American March- My Favorite Book April- My Favorite Field Trip May- Movin’ on Up

They all follow the same type of format: Hi my name is (blank), I’d like to tell you about (blank), here are three things (blankity-blank-blank)…thank you for listening to my presentation.

8 Tips to Power-Up Your Classroom Presentations

Last month, I attended a Back to School Night for parents, sitting through presentation after presentation by teachers, some with slides that helped make their presentation a delight to listen to, and others . . . well, that's why I'm writing this blog post.

The goal of a classroom presentation is to aid you in effectively conveying information in a way that allows students (or their parents) to remember what you said. Unfortunately, for some, the presentation becomes a crutch, and they begin to rely on the slides to tell their story, rather than to help them tell the story.

I've been creating presentations using software like PowerPoint and KeyNote for 20 years, and I've learned a lot about how to most effectively communicate. Here's what I've found.

1. Use as Many Slides as You Need

It's a common myth that better presentations use fewer slides. This is simply not the case. I once sent an education conference presentation to the organizers so they could preview it in advance of my speaking. They wrote back, concerned that my 45-minute presentation had 116 slides. I looked it over and realized they were right! I revised it and sent a presentation with 135 slides back to them. I finished my talk with 5 minutes to spare -- just enough time to take questions -- and the presentation was a huge success.

The number of slides in your presentation is irrelevant. What matters is how well your slides communicate and how much time you spend talking about each slide. Spending five minutes on five slides will almost always be more engaging to your students than spending five minutes on a single slide, even when the information is exactly the same.

In the movie Amadeus , the Emperor of Austria complains to Mozart that his music has "too many notes." Mozart responds, "There are just as many notes as are required. Neither more nor less." Use as many slides as you need to make your point. No more. No less.

2. Minimize Verbosity

Your slides are there to support what you are saying, not to say it for you. Keep your word count low, and only place one main point on a slide, plus three to five sub-points if absolutely needed. Remember tip #1 above -- don't be afraid to use more slides. They're free! Also, the language in your slides doesn't need to be in complete sentences. Pare the text to as few words as possible, using what's there only to emphasize and reinforce -- not replace -- the words coming out of your mouth.

3. Maximize Visuals

Photos, figures and icons work as visual memory triggers. They help your students remember what it is you're saying. Any time you can add a visual that helps illustrate or reinforce the points you're making in your slides, you should use it. One great way to do this on the cheap is to use public domain or creative commons photos you can find on Flickr or Google .

4. Reduce Noise

Many teachers like to add banners, headers, footers, page numbers and more noise to their slides. Unless the information needs to be on every slide for a vital reason (which is rare), you should remove it. All these redundant elements do is create distractions from the content of your slides. I find this to be especially true of page numbers. Imagine if a movie included a time code at the bottom, constantly reminding you how long you had been watching. All this does is serve to take the viewer out of the moment. Page numbers in slides really don't provide any useful information -- they just remind your students how long they've been watching.

Pursuant to tips #1 and #2, you're not going to win awards by cramming the most content on the fewest slides. Make text and visuals as large as you can. Not only does this make them easier to see and read, but larger images and text make a greater impact to aid memory. There's nothing wrong with filling an entire slide with a photo, and then placing text right on top. You may have to use a transparent background immediately behind the text so that it's clearly readable, but the overall effect is almost always more memorable than just some text beside an image.

6. Highlight What You Are Talking About

While you are presenting, your students may be momentarily distracted taking notes, thinking about what you are saying, glancing out the window, possibly even daydreaming. When they refocus on your slides, though, they need to quickly pick back up where you are, or you risk losing them again.

• Use contrast or call-outs to clearly show the area of the slide you are talking about.
• Reveal bullet points or table rows one at a time so that the last one visible is the one you are talking about.
• Use arrows, circles or other pointers to show what you are referencing in specific parts of an illustration, photo or graph.
• Animate and reveal parts of illustrations and graphs (where possible) to build your story rather than showing everything at once.
• Use bold type or different colors to highlight the keywords in any lengthy text.

7. Transition Changes

Humans suffer from an affliction called change blindness -- we have a hard time seeing changes unless there is a clear transition between the states. This is especially a problem in presentations where slides may look very much alike. Most programs include transitions that can be used between slides or on elements in the slides themselves.

My favorite transition is the cross-dissolve -- where the first slide fades down while the next slide fades up -- but different transitions can help illustrate points in your presentation. Are you talking about combustion or the fire of London? Use a flame transition. Talking about photography or Hollywood movies? Use the flashbulb transition. Even "cheesy" transitions help overcome change blindness and aid student memory at the same time.

8. Repeat Yourself Redundantly

It’s OK to repeat the same slide more than once -- especially when using images -- if you are reminding students of an earlier point. Obviously, this is not a license to be monotonous. However, if you want to tie separate ideas together, emphasize a point or splash in a little comic relief, it's perfectly fine to repeat a slide.

Bonus Tip: Make it Funny!

There's little doubt that emotional responses can aid memory. While it can be difficult to apply this power in a classroom slide presentation, humor is easy enough, and adding a bit of levity to your presentations at the right points can work to give students vital memory hooks.

Remember, the point of presentation slides is not to replace you as the teacher, but to help your students understand and remember what you are teaching. Overwhelming them with too much information can be just as harmful as underwhelming them with too little.

“You will have a room full of parents on the first day, so to have a smooth goodbye, I wrap a box with Kinder Bear (any stuffed bear) inside. I pretend to listen to the bear and tell the kids he wants you to say bye to Mom & Dad so he can come out and play. “Don’t assume they know how to do anything. Teach them everything. How to knock at the bathroom door, how to close it behind them, how to wash hands, throw away towels … routines, routines, routines.” —Shannon T.

17. Keep in mind how close to “baby” your students really are

“Remember, they are 60-month-olds! That always gives me perspective the first few weeks teaching kindergarten.” —Michelle K.

18. Label your classroom

As soon as you get your class list, add your students’ names to their areas in the classroom. This may include tables or desks, book bins, cubbies, and even pencil pouches. Allow them to take ownership of the things that they will need to take care of over the school year.

21. Start the year with firm expectations and clear routines

“Don’t worry about the curriculum. Just focus on the routines and rules. One of the best bits of advice I got from a professor was that the kids WANT to love you so don’t be afraid to be strict with the rules and set down your boundaries right out of the gate. I’ve been teaching for 20 years, and I learned that the hard way. Have fun, play games, let them see your playful side, but take the time to let them know what is expected of them.” —Julie S.

22. Teach kids exactly how to listen

Don’t expect that they will come to you knowing what listening looks like. Here’s how to teach them .

23. Introduce classroom callbacks

As you teach classroom expectations, routines, and procedures, do not forget to introduce callbacks. Teach your students three or four ways to stop, look, and listen. This can be done with hand motions, responses, and more. One of my favorite ways is when I say “Macaroni and Cheese,” they all say “Everybody Freeze!” They also place their hands on top of their head. This allows them to put down whatever they are touching or using and put their attention on me. It’s one of the quickest callbacks to teach.

“For my lines in the hallway, I say ‘There’s a cloud with marshmallows falling down (wiggle fingers like they’re falling from above), everyone catch a marshmallow!’ Pretend to catch and say, ‘now put it in your mouth and chew chew chew chew and keep your finger on your lips so it doesn’t fall out’ until you get to the cafeteria, playground, etc. They’ll walk around with their cheeks puffed up pretending to chew. Some might say they ate it, so tell them to catch another or it’s too big to eat the whole thing so keep chewing! I’ve heard teachers say ‘catch a bubble.’ It’s the same concept. When I need instant silence, I say, ‘Catch a marshmallow!’ and there is quiet immediately.” —Heikel F.

27. Take your class on a mini-adventure on the first day

“I teach routines and rules, but I also go on some kind of ‘adventure.’ My adventure is going through the school to find where everything is: the bathrooms, the nurse, the front office, the cafeteria (which we practice going through the line), library, etc. I’ve done fishing where I have fish (or a jungle animal if that was my theme) hanging at each place, and they collect them in a bucket as we go around taking turns and collecting through the whole school. 4 Guidelines for Facilitating Rigorous Kindergarten PBL

In PBL workshops I facilitate across the country, I generally hear two reasons from participants regarding why kindergarten students can’t possibly do PBL. Ironically, they are opposite reasons. On the one hand, participants argue that kindergarten students are barely learning to “do” school; they can’t read, so they can’t participate in rigorous, inquiry-centered projects. Other participants argue that kindergarten is too rigorous; there is too much to learn, so they can’t possibly spend time on projects that aren’t rigorous enough.

Kindergarten students can do rigorous projects. There is something magical about watching our youngest students engaging in deep critical thinking and discussion, reflecting on their work’s strengths and areas for improvement, and critiquing, revising, and producing high-quality products. As you plan and facilitate your next project for younger students, keep the following four guidelines in mind and see if your projects become more rigorous.

Hold high expectations for every student.

The research on self-fulfilling expectations shouldn’t be news to educators; we’ve known for some time that teachers with high expectations for their students tend to get more high-quality work, and teachers with low expectations for their students tend to get more low quality work, independent of students’ actual abilities or motivation. I see teachers of younger students hesitate to implement critique protocols where students could get cool feedback. Don’t forget Austin’s Butterfly ; Ron Berger’s story of a first-grade student who did six drafts of a butterfly drawing until he got it right, with critique help from his peers. It is a sign of respect for our students when we treat their work as important (and actually make their work important), and a piece of that is helping them do excellent work.

Focus on quality of thinking, not quantity.

The amount of paper I see in some kindergarten classrooms is truly astounding to me. Students are churning out worksheets, cut and paste papers, and pattern block designs at a rapid pace. Instead of worrying about practice and the amount of it your students get, focus on the quality of thinking your students are doing. Students can cut and paste a sort of 24 living and non-living things, or they can engage in a class discussion about fire, or clouds, or wind: are they living or non-living? They move, certainly. Does that make them alive? Do they grow? Fire could be seen as growing, as could clouds; they certainly get larger sometimes. A think/pair/share discussion or a student’s thoughts recorded on an iPad can tell you much more about their understanding of living and non-living than a fairly obvious object sort, and it requires your students to use a higher level of critical thinking.

Scaffold students’ journey through an ambiguous process.

I once witnessed a kindergarten project focused on identifying trees around the school at the request of the principal, who had visited the class and told the students that she needed a map identifying every tree around the school building. The teacher immediately turned the design of the map over to the students. They hadn’t studied maps, but the students had all seen maps, and she wanted them to figure out on their own how to create the type of map the principal was looking for. She scaffolded a discussion in which the students brainstormed different ways of creating the map. Eventually, the students chose one boy’s idea: to collect a leaf sample from each tree and glue it to the map to mark the tree’s location. These students might have grown used to having a teacher tell them the way they were going to complete an assignment. Instead, through this teacher’s facilitation skills, they took the first step toward being comfortable in and thinking about an ambiguous process.

Instruct and give real feedback on success skills.

In our PBL 101 workshop, we use a video called “Stray, Stray, Go Away” to give participants practice using one of our rubrics to score presentation skills and give feedback. The video features adorable kindergarten students from the Katherine Smith School in San Jose, California, during a final presentation of a PBL project on their exhibition night. When I ask teachers what feedback they would give the students, they are very quick to give positive feedback. It’s true; these students had a very strong presentation. It’s obvious that they practiced and prepared for the presentation, but that doesn’t mean it was perfect. After some encouragement, I can generally get participants to give some examples of feedback on things the students could improve, even though they really don’t want to do so. Their argument is that these are little kids and they did a great job. My argument is that the way to honor their work, to make it a rigorous process, is to give them real feedback—warm feedback, sure, but also cool feedback. Even young students can and should be expected to improve their work.

There is nothing more empowering to our youngest students than the message that we believe they can complete rigorous PBL projects. Keeping these four guidelines in the forefront of your mind as you plan and facilitate your projects for younger students will help ensure the high level of rigor that all students, regardless of age, deserve.
