Writing Center
The Liberty University Writing Center is available to provide writing coaching to students. Residential students should contact the On-Campus Writing Center for assistance. Online students should contact the Online Writing Center for assistance.
- For all papers that are not dissertations, use the student paper style for the title page. You can see an example of the student title page on the Writing Center's sample paper .
- For dissertations, follow the dissertation style title page as shown in the Writing Center's dissertation sample .
Student Title Page
- Your name should be centered and approximately fifteen lines below the tile.
- The full name of the class should be listed on the line immediately below your name, including the class number, i.e., Class 706: Introduction to Examples.
- The month and year should be listed on the line immediately below the class information.
Page Numbers
- The title page is not numbered. If you have a table of contents or other front matter, you can consider the title page as small roman numeral "i" but do not include a page number on the title page. The first page of the front matter begins with small roman numeral "ii", centered on the page. You can remove the page number from the title page in Word by inserting page numbers, then selecting the header, selecting Design under "Header Footer Tools" and selecting the check box for "Different First Page" as described in the screenshot below.

Course Description
For information regarding prerequisites for this course, please refer to the Academic Course Catalog .
As the student nears the dissertation-writing phase of his/her program, he/she needs to become conversant with the writing style and format of a dissertation. This course seeks to help develop familiarity in that area so that the student may begin to organize his/her own thoughts toward formal a dissertation proposal.
Course Assignment
After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations , the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will complete 3 Discussions. To successfully complete a discussion, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the prompts located in the Discussions' respective Modules: Weeks. Each thread must be at least 750 words and demonstrate critical thinking and awareness of course-related knowledge. Threads need to satisfy what is asked for in the prompt (nothing more, nothing less). Then, the student must reply to 2 classmates' threads. Each reply must be at least 500 words. For each thread, the student must support his/her assertions with at least 2 scholarly citations in current Turabian format. Each reply must be supported by at least 1 scholarly citation in current Turabian format. Acceptable sources include scholarly articles, textbooks, course presentations, and other scholarly sources. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E, F)
The student will complete two dissertation reviews in this course in which he/she will select dissertations in a particular field of study, summarize the argument of each, and critically analyze the unique contribution each makes to the academic discussion pursuant to the assignment instructions. Each Dissertation Review Assignment should be 8 pages in length (not including front or back matter). This paper will utilize current Turabian formatting (for footnotes and bibliography).(CLO: A, B, C)
The student will complete a critical analysis of J. De Waal’s Dryden’s A Hermeneutic of Wisdom: Recovering The Formative Agency of Scripture. Doing so will require that the student both summarize the major highlights of this work and critically interact with its unique academic contribution. The aim of this assignment is for the student to glean a better understanding of epistemology and philosophy in connection with the Christian worldview. The assignment should be a minimum of 4 pages (not including front or back matter) and include a Bibliography in current Turabian format. Within the critique, the student must provide citations to the assigned text in order to support their analysis and critique. Citations from other scholarly sources, while welcome, are not required. (CLO: A, C, D)
In this assignment, the student will take the prospectus he/she produced earlier in his/her program coursework (specifically in APOL 815) and perform a critical analysis that will help the student prepare to revise and refine a formal dissertation proposal in the future. For the critical analysis of the prospectus, the student will analyze the paper for the following types of issues: clarity of argument, appropriateness of scope, sophistication of direction, and cleanliness of writing. No title page, contents page, or bibliography page is necessary for this assignment (unless a bibliography is deemed necessary by the student). If the student does not currently have a preliminary prospectus available, then he/she may select another academic paper that he/she has produced within the realm of his/her degree program and perform the same critical analysis as he/she would the prospectus for this assignment. This assignment should be at least 5 pages in length. (CLO: C, D, E)
In this assignment, the student will be asked to compose an essay that will test his/her ability to remember and use the information he/she has acquired in his/her philosophical training earlier in this degree program. After selecting an argument for the Christian worldview, the student will compose an essay that identifies and defines the epistemological framework for the argument, articulates the organization of the components of the argument, acknowledges different luminaries associated with the argument, and discusses how the argument might be susceptible to skeptical scrutiny. The student may take as much space as necessary to write a complete answer to this prompt and will use current Turabian formatting for footnotes/references. The student should be sure to comply with program-specific writing standards. The student also should be sure to use appropriate scholarly sources and "Learn" material from earlier in his/her program of study to support the essay. A bibliography must also be included. This assignment will help determine the student's preparedness for the remainder of his/her degree program. (CLO: A, B, C, D, E)
*Instructor Option: The instructor has the right to require resubmissions/retakes/revisions for the Comprehensive Exam Assignment if they believe this is warranted due to compelling circumstances. Such permission is NOT automatic and is subject to the discretion of the Instructor.

You have to have a lot of self-motivation and self-discipline when you are going to school online, but the amazing thing is at Liberty you do not need to do it by yourself. You really do have resources like someone who is going to school on campus.
