• Why is it that can you only name white serial killers? How does press coverage affect what crimes we hear about? What aspects of a crime make it more ‘newsworthy’ than another similar tragedy which goes largely uncovered?
• What is the future of catching serial killers? Can statistics provide an advantage to detection? Is the incidence of serial killers in decline or on the rise?
• Female serial killers are less common than male, but not as rare as you probably think. What differences are there in the nature of their crimes, the victims they select, and the amount of time they remain at large for before being caught?
• Why do some women fall in love with serial killers? The condition of Hybristophilia is a complex one, but we shall explore the different psychological elements at play in the mind of an individual who seeks out a relationship with a known killer. We will also explore the condition Folie a Deux (or ‘madness for two’); another commonly misunderstood phenomenon.
• Killer couples or partnered homicide is another fascinating facet of serial homicide. How and why do such partnerships occur and what are the dynamics of such a relationship?

Finally, this talk will conclude with answering one of the most commonly-asked questions: “Why am I so interested in serial killers?” As you will see, an interest in true-crime is far from a new sensation. But why are some people so fascinated with the criminal mind? This talk will explain all the factors of such content which have provoked your interest, and you will find that you are not as unusual as you may think.

The Chestnut Man (2021)

In the great tradition of nihilistic Danish mystery novels comes this delightfully spooky, occasionally transcendent twist on the successful formula. A woman is found brutally murdered on a playground with a bizarre totem constructed of chestnuts left next to her body. Solving the case, which is almost immediately tied to the missing child of a prominent politician, falls to detective Naia Thulin (Danica Ćurčič) and her partner, Mark Hess (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard). Cue ruminative looks from rain-dotted windows and some properly toe-curling violence.

The Confession Killer (2019)

One of Netflix’s twistiest serial killer shows is this fascinating (though exhausting) five-part docuseries about Henry Lee Lucas, who confessed to hundreds of murders that he may or may not have committed. Lucas was tied to few or none of the crimes through physical evidence but was able to parrot sufficient details of the attacks to convince investigators and victims’ families that he was to blame. At times you may worry The Confession Killer is attempting to exonerate Lucas or make him into some sort of folk victim, but in fact, the show turns the mirror rather successfully on the audience.

Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer (2021)

Joe Berlinger has made a career out of Netflix serial killer content, having helmed both The Ted Bundy Tapes and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile , the narrative twist on Bundy’s crimes. He also directed the first Crime Scene installment, about the unfortunate case of Elisa Lam and the Cecil Hotel.

The Times Square Killer is much better than that effort, primarily because it involves hard facts over errant speculation. This three-part docuseries tells the story of New York City’s “Torso Killer,” who carved a bloody swatch across midtown Manhattan in the 1970s.

There’s a satisfying balance struck here between the facts of a little-known murder spree and respectful portraits of the victims, many of whom came from under-served communities and were only discovered to be missing when their family members took charge of the investigation.

Dirty John (2018–2020)

This positively gripping anthology series based its first season (the only one worth your time) on the Wondery podcast of the same name. Connie Britton stars as a successful designer who falls for John Meehan ( Eric Bana ), a man who claims to be a doctor but harbors dark secrets. What follows is compulsively watchable television, with nice twists on the genre’s typical trappings that keep viewers on their toes despite its nominally based-on-true-events status.

A Killer Paradox (2024)

This surprisingly white-knuckle South Korean thriller, based on an animated web series, follows Lee Tang (Choi Woo-shik), a convenience store worker who accidentally murders a serial killer in a holdup gone wrong. As a hard-nosed detective (Son Suk-ku) continues his search for the deceased slasher, Tang finds he has quite a knack for knocking off bad guys.

While the plot never truly acquits itself of comparisons to Dexter and I Saw the Devil , it’s still a well-constructed, devious little thriller that benefits from sharp writing and a willingness to wade into tricky territory. It’s the sort of show you could see really beginning to fly in its second season, if it’s allowed one.

Mindhunter (2017–2019)

David Fincher ’s eerily credible procedural follows FBI agents Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and Holden Ford ( Jonathan Groff ), who develop the modern method of profiling serial killers by conducting interviews with some of the most fearsome criminals in the annals of history, including Charles Manson (Damon Herriman) and Dennis Rader (Sonny Valicenti).

Mindhunter is, in many ways, the perfect distillation of Fincher’s detailed approach to cinema and his fixation on the minds of murderers. It plays as a welcome follow-up to his 2007 masterpiece, Zodiac , while offering its own singular approach to the genre.

Night Stalker: The Hunt For a Serial Killer (2021)

This straightforward, horrifying docuseries gives an admirable just-the-facts recitation of Richard Ramirez, surely one of the most fearsome serial killers in history. It’s one of Netflix’s most blunt docuseries, and there’s little enhancement or drama here, as it’s entirely unneeded. Ramirez’s crimes read like a depraved horror novel. His more or less accidental ability to elude police (until he couldn’t) was so incredible that, if not for the fact that it actually happened, they would defy credulity.

The Ripper (2020)

Looking across the Atlantic, this four-part docuseries examines the crimes of Peter Sutcliffe, a.k.a. “The Yorkshire Ripper,” who murdered 13 women between 1975 and 1980 in England. It's an exhaustive, well-told account of Sutcliffe’s terror reign, which isn’t particularly well-known stateside. This series also thoughtfully examines how the police response might’ve been different if his victims were male.

The Serpent (2021)

BBC/Mammoth Screen

This underseen series dramatizes the account of Charles "the Serpent" Sobhraj, a serial killer who drugged and murdered young backpackers in Thailand circa 1975 and 1976. The brilliant Tahar Rahim (recently a villain in the not-so-brilliant Madame Web ) stars as Sobhraj, bringing a dose of empathy to the monster without justifying his crimes. Billy Howle plays a Dutch official who begins investigating several of his countrymen’s disappearances, leading him into the murderer’s orbit.

Originally produced for the BBC, The Serpent takes time to unwind itself but never loosens its grip on your attention. Meanwhile, Rahim gives a highly credible performance of a serial killer and all-around creep; he’s charming, but not that charming, unsettling and shifty, but not outrightly suspicious . His performance, much like the show, is wonderfully calibrated.

The Sinner (2017–2021)

The Sinner is another reliable anthology thriller, with the first stellar season based on German mystery novelist Petra Hammesfahr’s novel about homicide detective Harry Ambrose ( Bill Pullman ). All four seasons concern Ambrose as he attempts to solve murders that are more complicated than they initially appear.

Each season is nicely old-fashioned, with Pullman making for a grounding guide through all this mayhem. As the series goes on, it adopts the pleasantly antiquated feel of something like Prime Suspect , where we follow a single detective on an understated journey without the noise of multiple side characters or killing-of-the-week distractions.

Slasher (2016–present)

As with any slasher series — or, in this case, anthology — some installments are better than others. Across its five seasons and counting, Slasher has covered tried-and-true genre territory and delved (at times less successfully) into more experimental fare.

Season 1, one of the best, follows a series of vicious present-day copycat murders after an ‘80s Halloween massacre. Then there’s season three, which feels like one of those particularly cruel straight-to-video cheapies. The most recent season, about a 19th-century serial killer, served as a smart reset for the series after an equally entertaining, though less horror-centric, entry in which David Cronenberg plays the patriarch of a very John Waters -esque family.

Slasher is more straight-faced and restrained than the similarly structured American Horror Story , calling back to the genre’s heyday with a bit more realism and genuine reverence.

Somebody (2022)

Another remarkably creepy South Korean chiller, Somebody follows Kim Sum (Kang Hye-rim), a developer for the titular dating app who finds herself drawn into a dangerous web after a user is murdered. Kim sets out to reveal the slasher’s identity, who might be stalking her, with the help of her friend, detective Gi-eun (Kim Su-yeon). A more thoughtful addition to the well-trod K-thriller genre, Somebody benefits most from the strong acting of its leads and a rather haunting, peculiar visual sense.

Somewhere Between (2017)

This single-season wonder pleasingly recalls weekly network thrillers of the late ‘90s and early-aughts with its story of San Francisco news producer Laura Price ( Paula Patton ), who is given a chance to prevent her young daughter’s murder when she travels back in time. Now, Laura has seven days to identify the killer and reverse the course of fate.

Originally aired on ABC, this twisty, unexpectedly spiky procedural has a real sense of place (despite being shot in Vancouver) and a supremely chilly atmosphere. Patton is always wonderful, and here she’s joined by Devon Sawa in an energetic, likable performance as an ex-cop reeling after the murder of his fiancée.

It’s a shame the show never got a second season, as it’s practically begging for the treatment Netflix gave You : pulling it from a network and sexing it up with an R-rating. As it is, these 10 episodes play pretty perfectly as a single story.

The Watcher (2022–present)

Of course, being a Ryan Murphy creation, this fictionalized account of a bizarre case in upstate New York is one very full sink. It stars Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as a testy married couple battling with independent kids, a whacked-out realtor ( Jennifer Coolidge ), nosy neighbors ( Mia Farrow ), and spooky notes from someone who really, really wants them to leave their new estate.

One of the joys of a Murphy production is watching all of the spinning plates and wondering which will topple first, but this one actually keeps most of them airborne throughout the final episode. No one does the blend of crime and soap quite like Murphy, and his ability to goad some of our generation’s best actors into increasingly wide-eyed theatrics remains unparalleled.

You (2018–2024)

A blessedly perverse spin on both CW shows and classic psycho-thrillers, You confidently and effortlessly reinvents itself throughout four seasons. It follows bookstore employee and serial killer Joe Goldberg ( Penn Badgley ), who develops an obsession with Guinevere (Elizabeth Lail) and wiggles his way into her friend group.

You is wonderfully knowing and often surprising, never content to milk one narrative thread for too long. As the later seasons segue into a sort of demented serial killer version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith , the show finds its satirical feet.

One of the earliest mainstream attempts at this concept was Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer , directed by John McNaughton, a disturbingly nuanced investigation into the mind of someone who has dedicated his life to killing others and getting away with it. Audiences found this subversion alluring, being rightfully disgusted by the titular Henry ( Michael Rooker ) but intrigued by the complexity this movie gave what would typically be a one-dimensional villain . It was this layered presentation that made the movie even scarier because by painting horror killers like Henry as real, multi-faceted people, the plot grants his actions a level of reality sure to haunt viewers . By making these monsters appear as realistic beings, the films draw on the inherent fear that the actions onscreen could somehow be replicated in real life — making this kind of story perfect for found footage.

No One Could See This Found Footage Horror Movie for Seven Years

Found footage is a saturated but endlessly enjoyable subgenre that uses its particular view to make each movie more feasible, often delving into unnatural phenomena like the famous Paranormal Activity franchise but using the camera to create a sense of connection with the audience. Many found-footage movies have tried to use that depth to show their horror from the killer's literal POV, with some of the most famous examples being Spree , Man Bites Dog , and Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon. While each of these films presents genuinely disgusting examples of people who thrill in terrorizing others, for some reason these specific intersections of theme and medium are always tinged with some sense of comedy, alleviating the terror onscreen with dark humor that varies in success. Whatever the intention of this comedy, it often detracts from the film's actual horror — which is why The Poughkeepsie Tapes is so hauntingly effective. Rather than ease some of its audience's discomfort, it actively works to make everyone's viewing experience an excruciating one , creating some of the genre's most disgusting moments with no reprieve anywhere to be found. It is a horrifying, utterly hopeless film, and it's because of this that it accomplishes what almost all found footage movies set out to do: putting its audience in the shoes of those suffering.

'The Poughkeepsie Tapes' Is Too Real

The Poughkeepsie Tapes follows the actions and fallout of Edward Carver ( Ben Messmer ), a brutal serial killer who has eluded the police for years while committing despicable acts of murder and torture throughout the U.S. — and made sure to film every single one. In a recent raid on what's believed to be his home, authorities discover not only one of his victims, Cheryl Dempsey ( Stacy Chbosky ), just about alive, but also over 800 videotapes of the man committing senseless acts of carnage and depravity.

The content of these tapes is scary on its own, these stomach-churning scenes showing him stalking and slaying hundreds of people and even, in one truly jaw-dropping moment, sewing one person's head into another person's torso. But even with all of that visceral gore , one of the film's scariest aspects is showing the effects of these actions on an entire nation. Law enforcement can't find a trace of him, investigators are baffled, and the families of his victims are utterly broken, knowing not only that they've lost a loved one but also the potential of what he's done to them in the process. The movie showcases the man's disturbing actions and their heartbreaking results, but its real terror comes from seeing just how easy it is for Edward to carry out these despicable acts.

One of the film's most harrowing aspects is Edwards's treatment of Cheryl, starting with her abduction. This is an excruciatingly long process that sees the man break into her house and hide while the teenager and her boyfriend enjoy an evening together before finally appearing, gruesomely killing the man and beating Cheryl before kidnapping her. His tapes document the many years he spends mentally degrading the young woman, the entire time evading the police, and even at one point going to her mother's house to gloat about what he's done to her daughter.

Along with this, there are several moments of Edward being shockingly public about his crimes, leaving the authorities hints about his victims through CCTV footage and, in one heartbreaking scene, snatching a young girl feet away from her front door while she's playing in her yard. What makes The Poughkeepsie Tapes such a horrifically effective tale is how it makes it clear that Edward Carver is not some mythical monster or immortal slasher like in other horror movies. It clarifies that he is just a person with a twisted, intelligent mind, and the methods he uses to capture victims and escape justice are startlingly simple ones that play on the basics of human interaction that everyone watching is familiar with. By using the connection found footage entails, The Poughkeepsie Tapes puts viewers directly into the man and his victim's minds, granting not only a painful view of his atrocities but also a haunting wonder of whether there are people this evil — and this efficient — in their real world.

'The Poughkeepsie Tapes' Uses Found Footage in the Scariest Way Possible

The Poughkeepsie Tapes relishes in its audience's discomfort, though the movie's tendency to sensationalize its gore often endangers the complexities its plot is attempting to communicate. However, the plot utilizes this violence and the devastation that comes with it to not only reveal how horrible its central killer is but to offer a close view of the tremendous repercussions this kind of monster can cause. It isn't the first found footage horror movie to attempt to put watchers into a malicious perspective but it's the one that makes the biggest commitment to unflinchingly show how someone can easily commit such atrocities. It doesn't shy away from the graphic violence or try to lessen the disastrous impact. Instead, it heightens this horror at every level , playing with the viewer's own sense of safety by constantly reminding the audience that such acts are possible in real life. In a Violent Nature is promising to be an innovation for the genre and has fans excited for its inventive storytelling. She cozied up to Hemsworth and Miller for several photos before Warner Bros. Pictures' special presentation titled 'The Big Picture,' which will preview the studios' upcoming film slate.

CinemaCon kicked off on Monday, April 8 and will run thru April 11th. 

It will feature presentations from other major studios, including Universal Pictures, Lionsgate, Focus Features, Paramount and Walt Disney Studios.

According to the CinemaCon  website , the convention is considered 'the largest and most important gathering for the worldwide motion picture theater industry.'

'From exclusive Hollywood product presentations debuting a slate of upcoming films, to must-see premiere feature screenings, to the biggest stars, producers and directors, CinemaCon will jumpstart the excitement and buzz that surrounds the holiday season (and beyond) at the box office,' the event descriptions reads.

Warner Bros. Pictures at CinemaCon 2024: Everything Announced and Revealed

Joker: folie à deux, furiosa: a mad max saga, beetlejuice beetlejuice, and much more..

CinemaCon 2024 has officially kicked off and many of the big movie studios are in Las Vegas ready to show off what the future holds for each of them. We here at IGN are in attendance and will be breaking down all the big news from the biggest presentations.

We must sadly share, however, that not everything is released to the public right away after a presentation, do we will do our best to describe as much as we can so you can learn more about your favorite upcoming films!

Warner Bros. Pictures' presentation was the first we attended and was highlighted by Joker: Folie à Deux, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. We also got a new look at Kevin Costner's Horizon and M. Night Shyamalan's Trap.

Joker: Folie à Deux First Trailer Unites Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck With Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn

As we mentioned, not everything shown at CinemaCon is released to the public. Luckily for DC fans, the first trailer for Joker: Folie à Deux was and it is already taking the internet by storm.

In the footage, we see parts of Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck and Lady Gaga's Harley Quinn relationship. What is perhaps most striking is how it appears to switch from what could be described as their romantic delusions to a grimmer reality. It also looks to confirm a big change in Harley Quinn's story in that she will now be a patient at Arkham Asylum rather than a psychiatrist.

Director Todd Phillips took the stage to discuss the film and confirmed that while the sequel is not a full musical, music will be an "essential element." It also apparently won't "veer" too much from the original film and that Arthur Fleck has always had "music in him."

Joker: Folie à Deux will hit theaters on October 4, 2024.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga Footage Shows Anya Taylor-Joy on a Mission

Those in attendance at Warner Bros. Pictures' CinemaCon panel were treated to an extended sneak peek at Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The few moments on display showcased the early life story of Anya Taylor-Joy's Furiosa and her arduous journey to avenge her mom and lost childhood. We also saw some of this story in the most recent trailer for Furiosa.

Director George Miller also stopped by CinemaCon and said Furiosa will take place over a span of 16-18 years of backstory and Taylor-Joy shared that this is "the story of one woman's committment to impossible hope."

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga rides into theaters on May 24, 2024.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Is Almost Back After 36 Years of Waiting

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice took center stage at Warner Bros.' presentation and we were shown new footage of the sequel in action alongside previous clips from the trailer. We get good looks at Keaton's Beetlejuice, the Deetzes - Winona Ryder's Lydia, Catherine O'Hara's Delia, and Jenna Ortega's Astrid - and even Willem Dafoe's character. Lydia also seemingly confirms the film will deal with the dead and the living trying to co-exist.

Keaton has seen the film two times now and says it is "really f***** good" and that Ortega is "just perfect" in the movie and got what they were going for right away.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens in theaters on September 6, 2024.

Mickey 17 Trailer Shows the Many Lives of Robert Pattinson's Mickey

The first trailer for Mickey 17 was shown at Warner Bros.' panel and showed how Robert Pattinson's Mickey is an "expendable" asset who can be reprinted whenever he dies. The film is based on Edward Ashton's Mickey 7, but director Bong Joon-ho of Parasite fame changed the title to Mickey 17 because he kills Pattinson's character 10 more times than the book did.

The footage featured Pattinson acting against himself multiple times in this futuristic sci-fi world and Bong-ho knew he could play all these different versions of Mickey because he has a "crazy thing in his eyes." We also got to see Mark Ruffalo's dictator character, his wife who is played by Toni Collette, Mickey's girlfriend who is played by Naomi Ackie, and Steven Yeun, who will be playing Mickey's "strange buddy."

Mickey 17, which really is the story of a "simple man who ends up saving the world," will be released in theaters on January 31, 2025.

Horizon: An American Saga Gets a Breathtaking First Look

Footage from Horizon: An American Saga, the two-part Western epic that stars and is directed, produced, and co-written by Kevin Costner, was revealed at CinemaCon and what was shown was a breathtaking sizzle reel of sorts from the films that tell a story set in the Civil War expansion and settlement of the American West.

Costner said to the audience that he first tried to make these films back in 1988 and then in 2012 and he's so happy he now finally gets to get them across the finish line. However, his full plan for Horizon involves four movies that tell more of the story.

He also discussed how this film will explore the "promise" of America that was earned by people who claimed it for their own by being tough and resilient. However, that came at the expense of those already here. He also wants music to be an important focus for this epic and he even went to Scotland to get 92 musicians to work on the score.

Horizon: An American Saga Part 1 is set to arrive in theaters on June 28, 2024, and the second part will be released on August 16, 2024.

M. Night Shyamalan's Trap Looks to Send Audiences to a Concert Gone Wrong

M. Night Shyamalan's next film is called Trap and he told us that his daughter Saleka, who is a musician, helped him form the idea for the project. As for what the movie is about, Trap looks to tell a story of an immersive experience like a concert that turns into a thriller.

When the concert begins and the singer Lady Raven (played by Saleka!) comes on stage, something terrible happens and you come to find out this has all been a trap to capture a wanted serial killer who is played by Josh Hartnett.

Trap will be released in theaters on August 9, 2024.
