'This is a lucid and an insightful book that the novice and the more established student will find equally thought provoking and engaging. It prepares research-minded social work students and practitioners to stay true to their professional values by becoming critically reflective researchers, able to question and produce knowledge which can help empower the people they serve'
Surinder Guru, Lecturer, University of Birmingham
I am in a 'funny' position to be a social psychologist teaching Bachelor & Master students in the Department of Social Work, Social Management and Social Policy. Therefore it is a very helpful literature for me and my students to look at research under the perspective of Social Work requirements.
This is a very fine book. One of the most valuable books on social work research methods to have appeared in recent memory. It is the most valuable addition to the burgeoning literature in the field of social work research. A fine book to read by any serious social work student and practitioner.
Clear and insightful with strong evidence base
This book has allowed me to explore some of the complexities of research in social work practice. It is clearly written and easy to read, even for an amateur researcher. The lay out is accessible but it takes you through complex notions whilst making them easy to understand.
Very accessible, covers all the key concepts in an easy to understand way, and does a great job discussing the politics of research.
The text is essential for social workers engaging in research, especially for the first time. the case studies are appropriate for the readership, and online material supports the work.
A well written book for anyone embarking on Social Work Research in Practice. A must read for Practitioners and students.
very useful
A valuable resource for social work students. It addresses key themes within the research and dissertation modules.
Combines research methodology with areas that impact on research such as Anti discriminatory practice and evidence-based practice.

Political social workers and other policy practitioners frequently lack explicit guidance from the NASW Code of Ethics as to how to navigate difficult ethical choices. This secondary analysis of qualitative data explores ways in which social work students encounter ethical challenges when practicing in a political setting. Secondary analysis was conducted with data from interviews with social work students. Interviews took place after students concluded an immersive field placement in a Southern part-time state legislature. Transcripts were coded deductively, with the NASW ( 2017 ) Code of Ethics’ six core values as an agreed-upon coding schema, using latent thematic analysis. Data also were examined to identify teleological or deontological approaches to ethical decision-making. Themes emerged relating to each of the profession’s core values. These include four themes related to social justice and to competence, three themes related to the importance of human relationships and to integrity, and one theme each related to service and to dignity and worth of the person. Both the absolutist deontological and the morally relativistic teleological approaches were evident in transcripts, with students tending to prefer one. Social work education must better prepare students and practitioners for the ethical challenges of practice in political and policy-making spaces. Challenges that emerge in practice of a political nature should be considered during the next Code of Ethics revisions.

The paper is centred in three intertwined issues concerning Social Work research: the research-minded practitioner; evaluating for good practice; researching as a practitioner. In the attempt to shape the development of social work research, relations between theory and practice were analyzed, taking the experience of practitioners in education as influential for Social Work. The processes advocated here are complex and not likely to have easy answers or procedural manuals. Reflective critical questioning, tentativeness and uncertainty are critical features for a Social Work researcher

Social work’s prime responsibility is to engage with people and structures to address life challenges and enhance well-being in order to further social change, social development, social cohesion, empowerment (and liberation) of people. Engaging with people and structure requires an in-depth understanding of the local environment and the policy frameworks. Local environment such as resources, ecological community, and network of relationships between people is not static and social, economic, cultural and policy frameworks too change rapidly. The environment and frameworks within which social work professionals work and conduct research have changed and evolved over time. The socio-political landscape too has changed considerably over the last decade across the globe. The processes of globalisation, privatisation, new managerialism and technocratisation have further impacted different countries in different ways ( Gibbs, 2001). These socio-economic and political developments have brought large scale changes in the community structures, institutional power arrangements and welfare systems, which have further led to new forms of injustice, oppression and discrimination. The gaps in the social structure are widening and new vulnerabilities have been created which pose serious threats to the well-being of people. As a result, subaltern voices on equality, social justice, human rights, development, security, education, health and mental health, employment, immigration and empowerment have emerged against the socio-political structures and systems. The varied ways in which these voices have played out differs from one environment to another.

The role of research in social work has become increasingly critical and relevant to training and practice. Social Work Research has been designed to address this and to demonstrate the importance of research for improving social work practice.

· Addresses topical issues such as the need for evidence-based practice and an awareness of ethics.
· International in scope - draws upon international literature
· Grounded in ′real-life′ research through case studies
· User-friendly and student-focused, it includes student exercises and further reading sections.

Here, the main argument is that social work research has to be compliant with social work standards of reflective practice and the need to ensure that social work research, social work practice and social work theory are linked, rather than split off from one another.
Social policy equips the social workers to think critically about the complex interaction between social, legal, economic, political, and cultural contexts in which social work is located and to be able to comprehend the issues and trends to respond to them effectively (Cunningham and Cunningham, 2017). It helps them to question both the social ...
