Be brief. D on’t overwhelm your audience with health information. Instead, focus on the few key points they need to know.

Give action steps. Tell your audience clearly what you want them to do.

Use examples and stories.  These can help you explain tough concepts. Plus, they engage your audience.

Organize information. Put information in a logical order. Start with the most important information.

Introduce and summarize. Start by saying what you’ll be covering. Close by summarizing key points.

Be kind.  Consider your listener’s thoughts and feelings.

Treat your listeners with respect.  Honor their dignity as human beings. Avoid making assumptions. Instead, treat each person as an individual with unique needs.

Take it slow. Speak at a moderate pace. Pause often. This gives your listener a chance to make sense of the health information.

Invite questions. If you’re speaking to people live (in person or at a distance), encourage them to ask questions. Say something like: “What questions do you have for me today?”

Literature Summary

Language is defined as “the principal method of human communication, consisting of words used in a structure and conventional way and conveyed by speech, writing, or gesture.” 1 Literacy has multiple components, including oral literacy (listening and speaking skills), print literacy (writing and reading skills), numeracy (the ability to understand and work with numbers), and cultural and conceptual knowledge. 2 , 3 Literacy is distinct from health literacy , which has been defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as the degree to which individuals and organizations find, understand, and use health-related information or services. 4 Research indicates that limited language skills and low literacy skills are associated with lower educational attainment and worse health outcomes. 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 , 9

Certain groups are at higher risk for having limited English language skills and low literacy, such as individuals who do not speak English at home, immigrants, and individuals with lower levels of education. In 2019, an estimated 21.6 percent of the United States population age 5 years or older spoke a language other than English at home. 10 Among these individuals, 61 percent reported they spoke English “very well” and 39 percent reported speaking English less than very well (“well,” “not well,” or “not at all”). 10 The U.S. National Adult Literacy Survey found that while almost 100 percent of individuals who immigrated to the United States between the ages of 1 and 11 years self-reported being fluent in English, approximately one-third of individuals who immigrated to the United States when they were age 12 years or older reported that they were not fluent in English — although this figure varied significantly by race/ethnicity, age at immigration, and amount of formal education prior to entering the United States. 11 The same study found that for English-only speakers, literacy scores increased by educational attainment, with scores varying by level of educational attainment more than by ethnicity or immigrant status. 11

Having limited English proficiency in the United States can be a barrier to accessing health care services and understanding health information. 2 For example, those who identify as having limited English proficiency are less likely to have a usual place to go to when sick or have a preventive care visit in the past year. 12 A study that examined self-reported health status among Hispanic adults in the United States found that Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, and other Hispanic people who chose to respond to a survey in Spanish were more likely to report a poor/fair health status than their counterparts who responded to the survey in English. 13

Likewise, literacy and health are interconnected. Limited literacy is a barrier to accessing health information, proper medication use, and utilization of preventive services. 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 Individuals with limited literacy face additional difficulties following medication instructions, communicating with health care providers, and attaining health information — all of which may adversely affect their health. 9 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22   Research has also shown a positive correlation between limited literacy skills and chronic conditions, including diabetes and cancer. 2 , 16

Institutional barriers such as a lack of well-trained interpreters and culturally competent health care providers adversely affect the health of individuals with low literacy and limited English proficiency. For immigrants dealing with language and literacy challenges, cultural barriers and financial difficulties may create additional obstacles to accessing and comprehending health information. 23 Quality of care is lowered when patients do not understand their health care providers, when patients and providers do not speak the same language, and when a provider’s approach is not linguistically competent. 24 , 25 , 26 Patients with limited English proficiency may receive lower-quality mental health care due to inadequate interpretation services, as interpreters may “normalize” or omit pathological symptoms from their interpretations. 27   However, trained interpreters and bilingual health care providers improve patient satisfaction, quality of care, and health outcomes for individuals with limited English proficiency. 25 , 27 Overall, there is a need for health care providers and organizations to be more active in developing and employing strategies to meet the language and literacy needs of diverse populations, including via online, written communication. 14 , 28 , 29

Additional research is needed to increase the evidence base regarding the relationship between language, literacy, and health outcomes. This additional evidence will facilitate public health efforts to address language and literacy as social determinants of health.

The 8 Key Elements of Highly Effective Speech

…and why your words barely matter.

I’d like you to take a moment to experience the following sentence, taken from a recent article exploring the nature of human consciousness: “Neuroplastic mechanisms relevant to the growing number of empirical studies of the capacity of directed attention and mental effort systematically alter brain function.”

Exciting? Hardly! In fact, most of the words you read barely register in your brain, and most of the words you speak barely register in the listener’s brain. In fact, research shows that words are the least important part of communication when you have face-to-face conversations with others. So before you utter another word to another person, memorize this list of the 8 key elements of highly effective speech:

  • Gentle eye contact
  • Kind facial expression
  • Warm tone of voice
  • Expressive hand and body gestures
  • Relaxed disposition
  • Slow speech rate
  • The words themselves

Effective communication is based on trust, and if we don’t trust the speaker, we’re not going to listen to their words. Trust begins with eye contact because we need to see the person’s face to evaluate if they are being deceitful or not. In fact, when we are being watched, cooperation increases. [1] When we are not being watched, people tend to act more selfishly, with greater dishonesty. [2]

Gentle eye contact increases trustworthiness and encourages future cooperation, [3] and a happy gaze will increase emotional trust. [4] However, if we see the slightest bit of anger or fear on the speaker’s face, our trust will rapidly decrease. [5] But you can’t fake trustworthiness because the muscles around your mouth and eyes that reflect contentment and sincerity are involuntary. Solution: if you think about someone you love, or an event that brought you deep joy and satisfaction, a "Mona Lisa" smile will appear on your face and the muscles around your eyes will soften.

The tone of your voice is equally important when it comes to understanding what a person is really trying to say. If the facial expression expresses one emotion , but if the tone conveys a different one, neural dissonance takes place in the brain, causing the person confusion. [6] The result: trust erodes, suspicion increases, and cooperation decreases.

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam found that expressions of anger, contempt, disgust, fear, sadness, and surprise were better communicated through vocal tone than facial expression, whereas the face was more accurate for communicating expressions of joy, pride, and embarrassment . [7] And in business, a warm supportive voice is the sign of transformational leadership , generating more satisfaction, commitment, and cooperation between other members of the team. [8]

You can easily train your voice to convey more trust to others, and all you have to do is slow down and drop your pitch. This was tested at the University of Houston: when doctors reduced their speaking rate and pitch, especially when delivering bad news, the listener perceived them “as more caring and sympathetic.” [9] Harvard's Ted Kaptchuk also discovered that using a warm voice would double the healing power of a therapeutic treatment. [10]

If you want to express joy, your voice needs to become increasingly melodic, whereas sadness is spoken with a flat and monotonic voice. When we are angry, excited, or frightened, we raise the pitch and intensity of our voice, and there’s a lot of variability in both the speed and the tone. However, if the emotion is incongruent with the words you are using, it will create confusion for the listener. [11]

Gestures, and especially hand movements, are also important because they help orchestrate the language comprehension centers of your brain. [12] In fact, your brain needs to integrate both the sounds and body movements of the person who is speaking in order to accurately perceive what is meant. [13] From an evolutionary perspective, speech emerged from hand gestures and they both originate the same language area of the brain. [14] If our words and gestures are incongruent, it will create confusion in the listener’s brain. [15] Our suggestion: practice speaking in front of a mirror, consciously using your hands to “describe” the words you are speaking.

Your degree of relaxation is also reflected in your body language , facial expressions, and tone of voice, and any form of stress will convey a message of distrust . Why? Your stress tells the observer’s brain that there may be something wrong, and that stimulates defensive posturing in the listener. Research shows that even a one-minute relaxation exercise will increase activity in those parts of the brain that control language, communication, social awareness, mood-regulation, and decision-making . [16] Thus, a relaxed conversation allows for increased intimacy and empathy. Stress, however, causes us to talk too much because it hinders our ability to speak with clarity.

When you speak, slow down! Slow speech rates will increase the ability for the listener to comprehend what you are saying, and this is true for both young and older adults. [17] Slower speaking will also deepen that person’s respect for you, [18] Speaking slowly is not as natural as it may seem, and as children we automatically speak fast. But you can teach yourself, and your children to slow down by consciously cutting your speech rate in half. A slow voice has a calming effect on a person who is feeling anxious , whereas a loud fast voice will stimulate excitement, anger, or fear. [19]

Try this experiment: pair up with a partner and speak so slowly that … you … leave … 5 … seconds … of … silence … between … each … word. You’ll become aware of your negative inner speech that tells you that you should babble on endlessly and as fast as possible. It’s a trap, because the listener’s brain can only recall about 10 seconds of content! That’s why, when we train people in Compassionate Communication, we ask participants to speak only one sentence at a time, slowly, and then listen deeply as the other person speaks for ten seconds or less. This exercise will increase your overall consciousness about the importance of the first 7 elements of highly effective communication. Then, and only then, will you truly grasp the deeper meaning that is imparted by each word spoken by others.

But what about written communication, where you only have access to the words? When it comes to mutual comprehension, the written word pales in comparison to speech. To compensate, your brain imposes arbitrary meanings onto the words. You, the reader, give the words emotional impact that often differs from what the writer intended, which is why so many email correspondences get misinterpreted. And unless the writer fills in the blanks with specific emotional words and descriptive speech – storytelling – the reader will experience your writing as being flat, boring , dry, and probably more negative than you intended.

The solution: help the reader “paint a picture” in their mind with your words. Use concrete nouns and action verbs because they are easier for the reader’s brain to visualize. Words like “sunset” or “eat” are easy to see in the mind's eye, but words like “freedom” or “identify” force the brain to sort through too many conceptual frameworks. Instead, our lazy brain will skip over as many words as possible, especially the abstract ones. When this happens the deeper levels of meaning and feeling will be lost.

The much talked about thing these days is Health. Everyone has become conscious about what to eat and what to avoid. People have taken up physical exercise or a sport to keep themselves fit. A lot of gyms have come up as a result; health canters too have mushroomed in every locality. A whole lot of youngsters, office goers have realised the importance of taking care of oneself and they eat healthy and stay fit.

On this page we have shared here some examples of Speech on Health and its importance, that will help you with a preparing a speech of your own, for any occasion. Our short speech on Health can be used at school or college level and the long speeches may be used by speakers other than children. The language is easy to understand with simple words that each one can relate to. You can draw reference from our speeches and make your speech interesting for your audience.

“Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.”   A very famous saying by Mr. Edward Stanley-the three times Prime Minster of the UK.

Good morning to all who join me here today on this occasion of World Health Day. We are all aware and will agree with Mr Edward. And the truth is a lot of us are even conscious about the fact that health is a matter of utmost importance. We all know and have heard umpteen numbers of times to have a healthy start to begin our day. Let us face it, how many of us truthfully follow a health regime. I would say just about 20% roughly! It is not a fact but my estimation, it may be low or it may be high, depending from country to country, region to region. According to a survey in America a few years back, obesity was becoming a bigger disease than cancer.

Only a healthy person can enjoy the fruits of his labour. What use is ones richness if a person who is wealthy lacks good health? He or she will be spending most of it either on medical bills or on employing help who will assist them to complete their daily chores.

“Health is like money, we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.”  Says Josh Billings – a famous humour writer & professor in UK University. So very right he was when he said it a century back. It still hold good and will be for next centuries to come.

So before this happens to us, and we lose our health, it is time to think. It is time to change. Who said that change is easy? It is a fight against your own will power. It is after all I who is stopping myself from doing what is best for me. The benefits of health begin with me. So the efforts also must begin with me. The day one realises this he or she will become actively involved in building this invaluable asset called healthy body. It is after all a healthy body in which a sound mind lives. If we are healthy we will be able to work better, think better, live better and enjoy to the fullest this gift called life.

Lastly, I would want to point out, that great health can be achieved by eating healthy, following at least one physical activity every day, if possible, sleeping sufficient, drinking enough water to keep yourself hydrated, getting up early and doing yoga. Yes and most importantly stay away from junk food as far as possible. It is alright to have fried food once in a blue moon, but having it on say every weekend can only damage your arteries. I leave it up to you my dear listeners, what combination works for you. I end my speech with this very famous saying by William Shakespeare

“Our bodies are our gardens – our wills are our gardeners.”

Greetings everyone! It gives me immense pleasure to welcome you all on behalf of all my staff and colleagues. Whether one is a small as a kid, an adolescent, an old or moving towards the middle age; at every stage our health is the centre of all our activities and the life we lead. A healthy body is a vehicle and I, the conscious being, am the master or the traveler.

Friends, these days people have become very conscious about their health & are often seen going to gyms, dance classes, aerobics or yoga centres etc. Some of the people do this as a style statement, without knowing how important it is for each one of us to keep fit. And keeping fit does not necessarily mean that one has muscles and can show them off. But it definitely does mean that you have an active lifestyle and are able to do your work without feeling too tired or feel taxed on your strength. I mean you do not feel the daily chores tiring and you are able to enjoy the day fully. For me health is an integral part of your daily activities woven into a day’s schedule. Taking care of your health is something that cannot be thought of as an activity for which you will take out time when you are free from office, or daily chores. There are various aspects on which our health is dependent. They include physical, mental and emotional factors.

For achieving physical strength it is important that we begin our day with some sort of physical exercise. Go for your morning walk or gym, yoga, or simply exercise at home if you like. Basically, do whatever you are fonder of and can take up physically according to your age. Take your pick and then, stick to the schedule. To be with your plan you need a lot of, no, not physical, but mental power too. Yes you got it; a lot of will power is needed to follow your regime. A very famous Spanish proverb says “A man too busy to take care of his health is like a mechanic too busy to take care of his tools.”

“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear” said Buddha.

Now that you have chosen your sport and a regime and imbibed it in your system, the next best thing to do is to check what you eat. This is the most important aspect of keeping fit and healthy. Eating too little or too much both is bad. As rightly said by Buddha, the wise one, it is our duty to keep our body healthy. By choosing the right food that gives us nutrition and strength, we need to take it in the right quantity. Avoid junk food as much as possible. “Garbage in Garbage Out” is the principle that applies in our life as much as on a computer. Eat junk and the result is a fat lethargic & lazy you! If you want a healthy body and a clear, strong mind then you must eat your greens, have a balanced diet, drink milk, juices and adequate amount of water.

Last but not the least we must keep ourselves mentally and emotionally fit too. Keep our emotions in control. We must learn to handle our anger, learn to be patient and accommodating to the others’ needs. This may be easily achieved by some people, credit it to family values or great upbringing. But for those who are still struggling to control their emotions meditation is the answer. Meditation, not just on our goals, but also helps us to achieve more. It helps us to stay focused. It helps us clear our minds and create space for creative and constructive thoughts. Especially in the times of today where there is so much stress is ours lives, we need to distress and think and work rationally. Our EQ is more important than IQ I say. Only a healthy mind can be trained to achieve the unachievable. So meditation is what we must learn to practice, each day. It is the health in totem that is desired after all.

As I said in the beginning, our body is a vehicle, it is important for us to understand that neglecting it will end us up with facing difficulties. Sometimes it may make it difficult for us even to breathe. A little negligence on our part may mean invitation to illness. A very famous Dutch proverb puts things in perspective, It says, “Sickness comes on horseback but departs on foot” One who suffers from ailments can best tell you how important it is to be healthy. So if we need to reach our life’s destination comfortably and become successful in our career, be an asset and not a liability, then we have to learn to take great care of this precious gift that we get so naturally. It is important for this vehicle to be in the best of its condition to enable us to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

I urge each one of us to be a health freak. Be super conscious. It is a great thing to do. Stay healthy and fit. Enjoy! Thank you.

Good Morning respected Principal Ma’m, teachers & my dear friends,

The fresh breeze in the morning, the dawn that brings the soothing rays of the sun, green plants and trees, fragrances from the roses & marigold in the balcony, they all are inspiration enough for anyone to go out and be there. You may want to go and be in the best of the company – Mother Nature’s lap, the one place where you always find comfort. Nothing can bind you to your bed, once you have had the experienced the morning freshness. And if you have enjoyed this precious gift, you will fully agree with me.

These are some reasons to inspire you to have a healthy start of your otherwise super busy, tiring and officious day.

I start my day with some exercise, with my mother, and then my daily routine begins. All through the day my healthy start keeps me energetic and lively so I can complete all my tasks efficiently and enthusiastically. Exercise induces and increases the adrenaline in my blood taking the energy levels high improving the oxygen supply to the organs that otherwise do not receive it and improves my muscle endurance.

Interestingly exercising helps in producing a feeling of happiness and reduces pain. It helps people who suffer from anxiety, feelings of depression. It can actually be very effective in lifting ones mood. And if you are looking for weight loss, then exercising is your one-stop shop solution.

Since the benefits of exercising are not limited to physical maintenance, they can be realised only by the people who actually follow a strict regime. They will tell us how it also helps to keep them mentally healthy too. For, studies now have proven that people who exercise regularly have improved brain functioning, swift thinking and definitely better memory.

It can be concluded from here that exercise has a direct relation with health. Health is a sum total of physical fitness as well as mental and emotional.

A morning walk, jog, aerobics, yoga or cycling on fresh lovely mornings; is way to jump-start your day. You choose the activity that appeals to you and that you are able to endure physically. Exercise regularly and you will see the difference. If you are young then you will definitely feel more energetic and be able to do much more than you can otherwise manage. And if you are in your middle age then you can easily keep all the heart ailments and other many such monsters at bay.  One study has found that by regular fitness regime you can decrease blood pressure and blood fat levels.

These days even good organisations and offices have become health conscious and have developed the surroundings of their premise around the  fact that one must, and needs to get up from his or her desk and do some physical exercise before going back to work again from a refreshing break. Coffee breaks can wait! Some of the offices allow the officers to cycle & go from one end to the other. Yet there are some who have gyms or re-creational rooms built within their office complex. They have claimed to have better performance from their employees thus increasing their output on the whole.

“Without health life is not life, it is only state of languor and suffering”, said Buddha. And it is only right, thinking, assessing, analysing and adopting the ways that lead us to a path of great health and happiness should be our motive.

Good Morning! I am glad to see the glowing, beautiful radiant faces of the wonderful August gathering. We popularly say that “You can judge the book by its cover.” And upon seeing all the happy faces my judgement about you is that you are all completely fit and healthy. For if you were not, then you couldn’t have had this glowing luminous smile.

That is the beauty of taking good care of this body that is known as temple of our beautiful soul. We take a lot of things for granted. For example our eyes, hands, legs, power of speaking, hearing and thinking intellectually, they all come so naturally to us that we just cannot think of life without them. Now all these features are the characteristics of a healthy body. But these are the external gifts that life offers us. How about the gift of a healthy stomach, lungs, liver or heart, even muscles? These are some invisible gifts given to humans subtly. If any of these organs stop functioning modestly, our life goes for a toss! Thankfully, we do not have to do much of a maintenance job when it comes to taking care of all these body parts. God gave us this beautiful computer fitted inside our head. And this super intelligent thing regulates our systems perfectly.

This machinery of life is a self-driven, self-lubricated and self-maintained intelligent super system. Even your cars or vehicles need maintenance, servicing and an up-keep schedule. The great thing about your vehicles is that we can always change them, buy new ones when their life gets over or you get bored with the old ones. But your most important vehicle, your body is given to you only once! You need to take care of it. It is your prime duty to maintain it. If this body is not healthy then even the best of the cars in your fleet is going to be of no use to you.

The health of your body is the health of your soul. Keeping an active regime, eating healthy food, having healthy thoughts, i.e. thinking positive thoughts, keeping a positive attitude towards others and keeping your environment clean are the contributors of a holistic approach towards health. Yoga and meditation has become such a rage these days. Every guru, every sports coach, life coach and professional organizations have become aware of the importance of including YAM -yoga & meditation in the daily lives of the people who follow them or are attached to them. YAM is becoming a way of life. Even in villages and not so urban regions people are becoming conscious day by day. It is only the ones who take their life too casually, and are care less about their body and life otherwise, are doing too little to keep healthy and fit. They are the ones you will find mostly in eating joints, restaurants, bakery shops, sweet shops etc. These people can then easily be spotted frequenting hospitals, doctors and chemists, taking self-medication sometimes to overcome their digestion problems. Most of the times they even are seem fighting with obesity too.

Healthy people on the other hand can be seen in the parks, playing the fields and sports clubs, gaming or simply walking, jogging or running. Such people even the cold weather conditions cannot stop. It is not that these self-motivated self-driven self-directed people do not go out and eat in various places. It is just that they do it less frequently and the quantity and quality of food they order is definitely different from the food ordered by unhealthy eaters. It is all about making choices in life, whether professional or personal. Substantial deliberation in the way we want to lead our life is the key. We must use our power of discretion sensibly and judiciously. What we allow inside our digestive system is our choice. What we think is also our choice. So keeping a virile body and prophylactic mind will lead us towards an invigorating health.

While exercise and good eating habits are good for body, meditation is wonderful for our mind, thoughts and brain. It helps us to have a superb memory and keeps us peaceful and composed throughout our day. While yoga gives us physical competency, meditation gives us psychological and cognitive aptitude. And for an exemplary life lived in a perfect manner we need both. Now the most important thing is time. We all very conveniently blame it on time. We say where the time is. We are always hard-pressed for this precious commodity. But the truth is we are too relaxed and lazy when it comes to doing things for our own self. Procrastination is engraved in our souls as an inherited feature. We just delay it incessantly and perpetually, knowing that one day we will have to do it when we see it on a prescription given to us by a doctor, when it just may be not too late for us to change our reckless ways we have been treating our body. So why wait till that extremity. Why not start now. Why not make some time for the best to happen now. Let us change for “If you won’t change then who will”.

What this handout is about

This handout will help you create an effective speech by establishing the purpose of your speech and making it easily understandable. It will also help you to analyze your audience and keep the audience interested.

What’s different about a speech?

Writing for public speaking isn’t so different from other types of writing. You want to engage your audience’s attention, convey your ideas in a logical manner and use reliable evidence to support your point. But the conditions for public speaking favor some writing qualities over others. When you write a speech, your audience is made up of listeners. They have only one chance to comprehend the information as you read it, so your speech must be well-organized and easily understood. In addition, the content of the speech and your delivery must fit the audience.

What’s your purpose?

People have gathered to hear you speak on a specific issue, and they expect to get something out of it immediately. And you, the speaker, hope to have an immediate effect on your audience. The purpose of your speech is to get the response you want. Most speeches invite audiences to react in one of three ways: feeling, thinking, or acting. For example, eulogies encourage emotional response from the audience; college lectures stimulate listeners to think about a topic from a different perspective; protest speeches in the Pit recommend actions the audience can take.

As you establish your purpose, ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want the audience to learn or do?
  • If you are making an argument, why do you want them to agree with you?
  • If they already agree with you, why are you giving the speech?
  • How can your audience benefit from what you have to say?

Audience analysis

If your purpose is to get a certain response from your audience, you must consider who they are (or who you’re pretending they are). If you can identify ways to connect with your listeners, you can make your speech interesting and useful.

As you think of ways to appeal to your audience, ask yourself:

  • What do they have in common? Age? Interests? Ethnicity? Gender?
  • Do they know as much about your topic as you, or will you be introducing them to new ideas?
  • Why are these people listening to you? What are they looking for?
  • What level of detail will be effective for them?
  • What tone will be most effective in conveying your message?
  • What might offend or alienate them?

Creating an effective introduction

Get their attention, otherwise known as “the hook”.

Think about how you can relate to these listeners and get them to relate to you or your topic. Appealing to your audience on a personal level captures their attention and concern, increasing the chances of a successful speech. Speakers often begin with anecdotes to hook their audience’s attention. Other methods include presenting shocking statistics, asking direct questions of the audience, or enlisting audience participation.

Establish context and/or motive

Explain why your topic is important. Consider your purpose and how you came to speak to this audience. You may also want to connect the material to related or larger issues as well, especially those that may be important to your audience.

Get to the point

Tell your listeners your thesis right away and explain how you will support it. Don’t spend as much time developing your introductory paragraph and leading up to the thesis statement as you would in a research paper for a course. Moving from the intro into the body of the speech quickly will help keep your audience interested. You may be tempted to create suspense by keeping the audience guessing about your thesis until the end, then springing the implications of your discussion on them. But if you do so, they will most likely become bored or confused.

Making your speech easy to understand

Repeat crucial points and buzzwords.

Especially in longer speeches, it’s a good idea to keep reminding your audience of the main points you’ve made. For example, you could link an earlier main point or key term as you transition into or wrap up a new point. You could also address the relationship between earlier points and new points through discussion within a body paragraph. Using buzzwords or key terms throughout your paper is also a good idea. If your thesis says you’re going to expose unethical behavior of medical insurance companies, make sure the use of “ethics” recurs instead of switching to “immoral” or simply “wrong.” Repetition of key terms makes it easier for your audience to take in and connect information.

Incorporate previews and summaries into the speech

For example:

“I’m here today to talk to you about three issues that threaten our educational system: First, … Second, … Third,”

“I’ve talked to you today about such and such.”

These kinds of verbal cues permit the people in the audience to put together the pieces of your speech without thinking too hard, so they can spend more time paying attention to its content.

Use especially strong transitions

This will help your listeners see how new information relates to what they’ve heard so far. If you set up a counterargument in one paragraph so you can demolish it in the next, begin the demolition by saying something like,

“But this argument makes no sense when you consider that . . . .”

If you’re providing additional information to support your main point, you could say,

“Another fact that supports my main point is . . . .”

Helping your audience listen

Rely on shorter, simpler sentence structures.

Don’t get too complicated when you’re asking an audience to remember everything you say. Avoid using too many subordinate clauses, and place subjects and verbs close together.

Too complicated:

The product, which was invented in 1908 by Orville Z. McGillicuddy in Des Moines, Iowa, and which was on store shelves approximately one year later, still sells well.

Easier to understand:

Orville Z. McGillicuddy invented the product in 1908 and introduced it into stores shortly afterward. Almost a century later, the product still sells well.

Limit pronoun use

Listeners may have a hard time remembering or figuring out what “it,” “they,” or “this” refers to. Be specific by using a key noun instead of unclear pronouns.

Pronoun problem:

Keeping audience interest

Incorporate the rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos.

When arguing a point, using ethos, pathos, and logos can help convince your audience to believe you and make your argument stronger. Ethos refers to an appeal to your audience by establishing your authenticity and trustworthiness as a speaker. If you employ pathos, you appeal to your audience’s emotions. Using logos includes the support of hard facts, statistics, and logical argumentation. The most effective speeches usually present a combination these rhetorical strategies.

Use statistics and quotations sparingly

Include only the most striking factual material to support your perspective, things that would likely stick in the listeners’ minds long after you’ve finished speaking. Otherwise, you run the risk of overwhelming your listeners with too much information.

Watch your tone

Be careful not to talk over the heads of your audience. On the other hand, don’t be condescending either. And as for grabbing their attention, yelling, cursing, using inappropriate humor, or brandishing a potentially offensive prop (say, autopsy photos) will only make the audience tune you out.

Creating an effective conclusion

Restate your main points, but don’t repeat them.

“I asked earlier why we should care about the rain forest. Now I hope it’s clear that . . .” “Remember how Mrs. Smith couldn’t afford her prescriptions? Under our plan, . . .”

Call to action

Speeches often close with an appeal to the audience to take action based on their new knowledge or understanding. If you do this, be sure the action you recommend is specific and realistic. For example, although your audience may not be able to affect foreign policy directly, they can vote or work for candidates whose foreign policy views they support. Relating the purpose of your speech to their lives not only creates a connection with your audience, but also reiterates the importance of your topic to them in particular or “the bigger picture.”

Practicing for effective presentation

Once you’ve completed a draft, read your speech to a friend or in front of a mirror. When you’ve finished reading, ask the following questions:

  • Which pieces of information are clearest?
  • Where did I connect with the audience?
  • Where might listeners lose the thread of my argument or description?
  • Where might listeners become bored?
  • Where did I have trouble speaking clearly and/or emphatically?
  • Did I stay within my time limit?

Where can I find additional information about speech and language developmental milestones?

The first 3 years of life, when the brain is developing and maturing, is the most intensive period for acquiring speech and language skills. These skills develop best in a world that is rich with sounds, sights, and consistent exposure to the speech and language of others.

There appear to be critical periods for speech and language development in infants and young children when the brain is best able to absorb language. If these critical periods are allowed to pass without exposure to language, it will be more difficult to learn.

The first signs of communication occur when an infant learns that a cry will bring food, comfort, and companionship. Newborns also begin to recognize important sounds in their environment, such as the voice of their mother or primary caretaker. As they grow, babies begin to sort out the speech sounds that compose the words of their language. By 6 months of age, most babies recognize the basic sounds of their native language.

Children vary in their development of speech and language skills. However, they follow a natural progression or timetable for mastering the skills of language. A checklist of milestones for the normal development of speech and language skills in children from birth to 5 years of age is included below. These milestones help doctors and other health professionals determine if a child is on track or if he or she may need extra help. Sometimes a delay may be caused by hearing loss, while other times it may be due to a speech or language disorder.

Children who have trouble understanding what others say (receptive language) or difficulty sharing their thoughts (expressive language) may have a language disorder. Developmental language disorder  (DLD) is a language disorder that delays the mastery of language skills. Some children with DLD may not begin to talk until their third or fourth year.

Children who have trouble producing speech sounds correctly or who hesitate or stutter when talking may have a speech disorder. Apraxia of speech is a speech disorder that makes it difficult to put sounds and syllables together in the correct order to form words.

Talk to your child’s doctor if you have any concerns. Your doctor may refer you to a speech-language pathologist, who is a health professional trained to evaluate and treat people with speech or language disorders. The speech-language pathologist will talk to you about your child’s communication and general development. He or she will also use special spoken tests to evaluate your child. A hearing test is often included in the evaluation because a hearing problem can affect speech and language development. Depending on the result of the evaluation, the speech-language pathologist may suggest activities you can do at home to stimulate your child’s development. They might also recommend group or individual therapy or suggest further evaluation by an audiologist (a health care professional trained to identify and measure hearing loss), or a developmental psychologist (a health care professional with special expertise in the psychological development of infants and children).

The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) sponsors a broad range of research to better understand the development of speech and language disorders, improve diagnostic capabilities, and fine-tune more effective treatments. An ongoing area of study is the search for better ways to diagnose and differentiate among the various types of speech delay. A large study following approximately 4,000 children is gathering data as the children grow to establish reliable signs and symptoms for specific speech disorders, which can then be used to develop accurate diagnostic tests. Additional genetic studies are looking for matches between different genetic variations and specific speech deficits.

Researchers sponsored by the NIDCD have discovered one genetic variant, in particular, that is linked to developmental language disorder (DLD), a disorder that delays children’s use of words and slows their mastery of language skills throughout their school years. The finding is the first to tie the presence of a distinct genetic mutation to any kind of inherited language impairment. Further research is exploring the role this genetic variant may also play in dyslexia, autism, and speech-sound disorders.

A long-term study looking at how deafness impacts the brain is exploring how the brain “rewires” itself to accommodate deafness. So far, the research has shown that adults who are deaf react faster and more accurately than hearing adults when they observe objects in motion. This ongoing research continues to explore the concept of “brain plasticity”—the ways in which the brain is influenced by health conditions or life experiences—and how it can be used to develop learning strategies that encourage healthy language and speech development in early childhood.

A recent workshop convened by the NIDCD drew together a group of experts to explore issues related to a subgroup of children with autism spectrum disorders who do not have functional verbal language by the age of 5. Because these children are so different from one another, with no set of defining characteristics or patterns of cognitive strengths or weaknesses, development of standard assessment tests or effective treatments has been difficult. The workshop featured a series of presentations to familiarize participants with the challenges facing these children and helped them to identify a number of research gaps and opportunities that could be addressed in future research studies.

What are voice, speech, and language?

Voice, speech, and language are the tools we use to communicate with each other.

Voice is the sound we make as air from our lungs is pushed between vocal folds in our larynx, causing them to vibrate.

Speech is talking, which is one way to express language. It involves the precisely coordinated muscle actions of the tongue, lips, jaw, and vocal tract to produce the recognizable sounds that make up language.

Language is a set of shared rules that allow people to express their ideas in a meaningful way. Language may be expressed verbally or by writing, signing, or making other gestures, such as eye blinking or mouth movements.

Mental health is just as important as physical health. You may ask, “Why is that?” Well, let’s break it down. When you have a cold, you feel tired and weak, right? You might even need to stay in bed. Mental health is similar. When your mental health is not good, you might feel sad, worried, or scared all the time. It can make it hard to do everyday things, like go to school or work.

Let’s imagine our mind like a garden. If you water the plants every day, give them sunlight, and remove the weeds, they will grow well. But, what if you forget to water them, or if they don’t get enough sun? The plants won’t grow well. They may even die. Our minds are like those plants. We need to take care of them every day.

Sometimes, people think that if they can’t see a problem, it’s not there. But that’s not true. Just like you can’t see the wind, but you can feel it, mental health problems are real even if you can’t see them. They can hurt a lot and make life difficult.

Now, you might think, “I am young, I don’t have to worry about this.” But, you are wrong. Mental health is important at every age. Just like a small tree needs care to grow into a big tree, young minds need care too. If we learn to take care of our mental health when we are young, it will be easier when we are older.

Taking care of your mental health is not hard. You can talk to your friends and family about your feelings. You can do things you enjoy, like playing sports or reading books. You can also ask for help if you need it. There’s no shame in asking for help. It’s just like asking for a band-aid when you fall and hurt your knee.

In conclusion, mental health is very important. It helps us to be happy, healthy, and strong. It helps us to learn, to work, and to make friends. It’s something we should all care about, no matter how young or old we are. It’s not something to be scared of or ashamed about. It’s just another part of being human. Sunak to cite Britain’s ‘sicknote culture’ in bid to overhaul fit note system

Prime minister to express concern about ‘over-medicalising’ normal worries with diagnoses as mental health conditions

Rishi Sunak will today claim Britain is suffering from a “sicknote culture”, as he warns there is a risk of “over-medicalising” normal worries by diagnosing them as mental health conditions.

In a speech on how to reduce people being signed off sick from work, the prime minister will say the government is planning to trial getting “work and health professionals” to issue fit notes, shifting away from GPs carrying out this role.

Sunak will say he is concerned about the increase in long-term sickness since the pandemic, largely driven by mental health conditions with 2.8 million people now “economically inactive”.

In relation to mental health, he will say he would “never dismiss or downplay the illnesses people have”, but also argue that there is a need to be “more honest about the risk of over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life”.

His language echoes that of Mel Stride, the work and pensions secretary, who has claimed that too often doctors “label or medicalise” conditions which in the past were seen as “the ups and downs of life”.

As part of a new drive to overhaul the system, Sunak will say one plank of the reforms will be testing whether responsibility for issuing sicknotes should be shifted from “overstretched” GPs to “specialist work and health professionals who have the dedicated time to provide an objective assessment of someone’s ability to work and the tailored support they need to do so”.

The law was changed last year to allow fit notes to be issued by any doctor, nurse, pharmacist, physiotherapist or occupational therapist in addition to GPs, who have traditionally overseen the system. No 10 last night would not clarify whether the government was planning to widen the criteria further to allow non-medical professionals to issue or change fit notes as well.

Sunak will suggest in his speech that GPs are signing people off sick for work “by default”, with 11m fit notes issued last year, of which 94% assessed people as “not fit for work”. No 10 claimed that the fit note system has “opened the floodgates for millions of people to be written off work and into welfare without getting the right support and treatment they might need to help them stay in work”.

However, extracts of the speech released to the media on Thursday night did not address the issue of NHS mental health capacity, with NHS bosses warning “overwhelmed” services have been unable to cope with a big post-Covid increase in people needing help.

Dr Sarah Hughes, chief executive of the mental health charity Mind, said: “We are deeply disappointed that the prime minister’s speech continues a trend in recent rhetoric which conjures up the image of a ‘mental health culture’ that has ‘gone too far’.

“This is harmful, inaccurate and contrary to the reality for people up and down the country. The truth is that mental health services are at breaking point following years of underinvestment, with many people getting increasingly unwell while they wait to receive support.”

She added: “To imply that it is easy both to be signed off work and then to access benefits is deeply damaging. It is insulting to the 1.9 million people on a waiting list to get mental health support, and to the GPs whose expert judgment is being called into question.”

James Taylor, the director of strategy at the disability charity Scope, said: “Much of the current record levels of inactivity are because our public services are crumbling, the quality of jobs is poor and the rate of poverty among disabled households is growing.”

Employment experts said the number of fit notes issued – 11m last year – has not risen since before the pandemic.

“Fit notes are not driving the increase in economic inactivity. They are not responsible for high levels of worklessness from ill health. Economic inactivity has been driven by people who are already out of work and have been for long periods,” said Tony Wilson, the director of the Institute for Employment Studies.

Plans to reform the fit note system were first flagged by Jeremy Hunt in the autumn statement. A new service called WorkWell is due to be launched this year in 15 areas , which is described as “early-intervention work and health support and assessment”. This will be targeted largely at people with mental health and musculoskeletal conditions, with people who have fit notes attending sessions with “work and health coaches” in an effort to get them to return to employment.

The last Labour government introduced “fit notes” rather than “sicknotes” in 2010 to put a new emphasis on doctors certifying what patients are able to do, rather than what they cannot.

Alison McGovern, Labour’s acting shadow work and pensions secretary, said: “We’ve had 14 Tory years, five Tory prime ministers, seven Tory chancellors, and the result is a record number of people locked out of work because they are sick – at terrible cost to them, to business and to the taxpayer paying billions more in spiralling benefits bills.”

Ruth Rankine, the director of the NHS Confederation’s primary care network, said its members had “long advocated for a review of the fit note process which could be more effectively managed through trained professionals that support people back into work”.

But she added: “The deeper problem isn’t the system – it’s that people are sicker than they were and they have more complex healthcare needs. This is why it is vital the government starts treating investment in the NHS as an explicit tool of economic development and also, that the prime minister should lead a national mission for health improvement to shift the focus from simply treating illness to promoting health and wellbeing.”
