Why I chose to adopt the UAE as my second home

The UAE’s vision of creating a global hub for groundbreaking technology and innovation is not a destination but a journey. On the face of it, that may sound a tad cliché, but digging a little deeper reveals a path of self-reliance, self-determination, and an unwavering commitment to build a sustainable ecosystem where innovation and technology can flourish driving the nation’s burgeoning knowledge economy.

A nation of plentiful resources, the natural, easier option for the UAE is to buy rather than to make. However, its extraordinary vision and ambition to lead by example means the country has shunned the path of least resistance to carve out its place among the most progressive nations in the world in less than 50 years assuming leadership on many fronts, both regionally and internationally, with the climate challenge being the latest example.

Master plans such as the National Innovation Strategy, the UAE Strategy for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the UAE Strategy for Artificial Intelligence, National Cybersecurity Strategy 2019, and the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 reflect what the country wants to achieve on the scientific front. And these strategies are all backed up by action. Simply speaking, research and development that are fundamental to these strategies are entirely reliant on local, regional, and global cooperation, something which is not commonly seen or heard of. The Advanced Technology Research Council has given Abu Dhabi just that structure and direction. At ASPIRE, our job is to help turn that vision into reality.

This thrust on partnership and cooperation proved immensely attractive to me, like so many scientific innovators from around the world, who flock to this part of the Gulf to quench their thirst for discovery.

Arriving in Abu Dhabi, I immediately felt its infectious collaborative environment that pervades the emirate. And this first year has been one amazing ride of innovation and collaboration. We’ve launched the MBZIRC Maritime Grand Challenge aimed at resolving critical safety and security issues in the shipping industry, whilst in partnership with XPRIZE, we’ve launched “Feed the Next Billion” to revolutionize the global food supply chain and its impact on communities around the world.

It’s not hard to see the connection between Abu Dhabi’s collaborative principles geared towards the larger good of humanity with the ideas behind MBZIRC and Feed the Next Billion. Both competitions engage innovators and talented research teams from all over the world to develop groundbreaking solutions to some of the world’s pressing challenges. The contests will prove the power of collaboration and there’s no better place for that to happen than here in my adopted homeland.

Are You a Second-Home Person?

A place outside the city might sound like heaven, but there are some things you should consider.

A collage of a woman with her head tilted and her finger on her chin, pondering, next to a waterfront house with a hammer, nails, a faucet and a calendar hovering above it. Between the woman and the house is a tall city building, representing her primary residence. The woman and the city building are in sepia tones, while the waterfront house and the tools are in color.

By Joanne Kaufman

A Home Away From Home Could Be Perfect for You If …

You understand the importance of being organized. You make lists to ensure that you don’t have two jars of turmeric in the city and none in the country (and vice versa). You listened very carefully and took appropriate action when a knowledgeable source told you it was necessary to book at least a month ahead for a table at a popular restaurant on Saturday night, and three months ahead for a Pilates class on Saturday morning, during high season.

You’re not much of a traveler. Of course, you have to factor in the time it takes to get from your primary residence to your second home. But it’s a way to have a change of scenery without packing a large suitcase or getting anywhere near an airport.

You want to be near nature but strictly on your own terms. To own a second home is to have the great outdoors but to have it in proximity to the great indoors.

You love being a host. You love feeding and boarding a crowd, and chances are you’ll have more room to do so at your second home than at your primary residence. And now, at long last, you can reciprocate the generosity of people who bought a second home before you did.

You’re a D.I.Y. person. A second home will give you plenty of opportunities to demonstrate your skills because you can absolutely depend on the fact that something is about to break (if it hasn’t already), just as you can depend on the fact that the plumber/electrician/odd-job person is booked solid until after Labor Day. And perhaps because this is your first time owning a garage, you suddenly have room for a wide array of tools. Home Depot, here you come.

On the Other Hand, Maybe Not If …

You are looking to shake up your life. “Psychologically speaking, this is not a good reason,” said Dr. Gail Saltz, a clinical associate professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College. “In buying the property, people have invested money and time and will thus feel compelled to go there regularly. And having two choices — the primary residence and the vacation home — doesn’t add much in the way of variety.”

Your goal is to create a glorious retreat for generations to come. Well, good luck with that. “Your heirs may not want it,” Dr. Saltz said. “They may prefer a place in the mountains or at the beach. Perhaps they could use the money a sale would bring, but will feel obligated to keep it.”

You are easily thrown for a loop. Boilers get ornery. Faucets spring leaks. Lawns, siding, gutters, roofs all need to be maintained. The snowstorm comes, but the snowplow guy doesn’t. All this is what aggravates people about first homeownership. The acquisition of a vacation property is an invitation to multiply this agita by two.

“I’ve had people sell their weekend home because they worried so much about the property when they weren’t there,” said Amy Lonas, an associate broker in the Woodstock, N.Y., office of Coldwell Banker Village Green Realty. “We’ve had ice storms and floods here, and they just didn’t want the angst.”

The situation can be particularly challenging for those whose primary residence is a rental. “This may be their first home purchase,” Ms. Lonas said. “They think they’re buying a dream and that nothing can go wrong. I tell these clients, ‘Expect something to break right after you close.’”

You’re deeply concerned about what others think. “Because we’re living in a time when there is so much wealth disparity,” Dr. Saltz said, “you need to think through how you would deal with the knowledge that some people will say, ‘You must be really rich,’ which may or may not be true.” Of course, you may encounter just as many people who will say: “You bought there ? Ugh! Nobody goes there.” Add these reactions to the very long list of judgments family, friends, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers have already made about you.

You expect life , wherever your second home is situated, to precisely mirror life at home. There won’t necessarily be a Starbucks on the corner or first-rate kung pao tofu a three-minute walk away. Uber or DoorDash might not operate where you are. Accept this or rethink your real estate plans. Diane Saatchi, an associate broker at Saunders & Associates in East Hampton, said, “I always tell people to rent for a season before they buy.”

The State of Real Estate

Whether you’re renting, buying or selling, here’s a look at real estate trends..

A lot of change is happening in the housing market. Here’s the outlook .

With a landmark legal settlement  poised to upend a decades-old norm that has dictated who pays real estate agents and how much, economists, agents and lenders are beginning to worry that the burden could now be on first-time home buyers .

American homeowners could see a significant drop  in the cost of selling their homes  after a real estate trade group agreed to a landmark deal  that would eliminate the standard 6% sales commission.

A pricey housing market and higher interest rates have made it harder to afford a house, but so-called closing costs — for items like loan origination fees, discount points, appraisal and credit report fees — are also adding to the challenge .

As the prices for office space in urban centers tumble, cities whose municipal budgets rely on taxes associated with commercial real estate are starting to bear the brunt .

Homeowners are adding hidden doors and rooms to foil burglars, eke out extra storage space and prepare for Armageddon .

There is no second home quite like the UAE

Opportunities aplenty and an accommodating lifestyle are not the only perks of living in this country.

For those who have lived in the city or the country for the past 10 years, seeing the United Arab Emirates rank 10th among the world's best countries for expats in the HSBC Explorer Survey comes as no surprise. Year-round sunshine and sandy beaches are only two elements of a charmed lifestyle that attracts millions of expatriates from around the world.

Over the past decade, several factors and developments have encouraged residents to establish deeper roots in the country. A majority of the respondents in the survey said they had been in the UAE for more than five years.

While many people are drawn here by the prospect of greater career opportunities, higher wages and an expanding investment and business environment, the chance to enjoy a better quality of life is not the only attractive feature of the seven emirates. Being part of the country's journey and development  is exciting and is all the more so when one can gain exposure to unique projects and gain an extensive professional experience.

The country's drive to distinguish itself as an art, culture and tourism hub in the region is an added value that has charmed many residents, while the diverse curricula on offer in schools and universities tell the story of children who can thrive in a safe environment.

In a region that is riddled with conflict and chaos, the UAE has committed itself to tolerance and understanding. It acts as a beacon for talent keen to enjoy the benefits of the country and to experience the rapid development and ever-expanding progress of our cities. Heartened by the stability, security, integration and inclusiveness the country has to offer, expatriates from more than 150 nationalities have chosen to make the country their second home. All of us benefit from that unique environment. Indeed, belonging to such a multicultural and hospitable society can add richness to one's life and personality.

The sun always shines in Dubai where people from all walks of life congregate all year round and contribute to this growing economy. And for the many who have touched the magic of success, the city also offers a fantastic venue to own, showcase, and drive the vehicle or vehicles of their choice.

One such individual who has found her niche in the entrepreneurial space is Rachita Luthra. The marketing agency director, who moonlights as a social media star with over 205k followers on Instagram professes her love for the city and ‘Queen’ i.e. her Maserati Ghibli in the latest edition of ‘My Dubai Car’. Here’s what she has to say…

When did you move to Dubai and what do you like most about this city?

Dubai welcomes individuals of all nationalities, offering new opportunities daily. Since relocating here, I've accomplished a great deal, and that's what I appreciate about the city. Its lively atmosphere ensures I never get bored, and despite residing here, it feels like I'm always on vacation—such is the unique lifestyle Dubai provides.

What do you do for work?

During the pandemic, I established my own marketing agency in Dubai and have been fortunate to receive incredible opportunities. Our agency offers comprehensive 360-degree marketing support to various brands. Additionally, I continue to work and create an impact as a social media influencer alongside managing the agency.

What kind of car-related activities do you enjoy?

I find great enjoyment in various car-related activities, particularly exploring scenic drives beyond the city that offer a blend of adventure and relaxation. I also find pleasure in engaging in the many motoring activities Dubai has to offer, like off-roading and go-karting.

What made you purchase your vehicle?

For the past eight years since relocating to Dubai, I've consistently opted for car rentals. It was a deliberate choice until I reached a point of financial stability, allowing me to purchase my own vehicle. I was patient in my decision, avoiding the temptation of cheaper options, and waited until I could afford a luxury car that aligned with my preferences. The car I eventually purchased fits well within my budget, and I appreciate the regal vibes it exudes. Given the nature of my job, which involves daily interactions with various people, a satisfying driving experience is essential, and my Maserati Ghibli fulfills that requirement admirably.

What do you like most about your car and what could be improved?

I am particularly fond of Maserati for its luxurious features and the sense of elegance it brings. My Ghibli’s spacious interior and advanced technology contribute to an overall positive driving experience. However, there is always room for improvement. One aspect that could be enhanced is fuel efficiency, as it tends to be on the lower side.

What does your car mean to you?

Besides being a stylish extension of myself, my car serves as a second home, with several essentials always on hand. It always has a pair of heels, few bags and jackets, and occasionally even outfits, along with basic makeup for daily use. Given the considerable amount of time I spend in it, my car has become a personal space where I keep items that are part of my routine.

If money were no object what car or SUV would you have in your garage? Where would you like to drive it?

If money were no object, the Porsche 911 would undoubtedly be my dream car to own. Its iconic design, powerful performance, and precision engineering make it a symbol of automotive excellence. I envision driving the 911 on the winding roads of the Swiss Alps. But for now, it’s my ‘Queen’, the Maserati Ghibli. She is everything I want and need.

It is, without a doubt, one of the world’s most fascinating cities. In fact, if cities were ranked on their celeb appeal, Dubai would be perched at the very top. A leading centre of business, culture, and learning, the city offers some of the world’s best infrastructure and creature comforts. Dubai is an architectural wonderland, it is a shopper’s paradise, a global hub for trade, a tourist’s sanctuary and an expat’s haven.

Dubai My Second Home presents the various faces of Dubai to those who wish to explore it further: Potential retirees, entrepreneurs, business owners, remote workers, professionals, healthcare workers, scientists, students, and visitors, among others.

A splendid brew of adventure, achievement and audacity, Dubai means different things to different people. To some, it’s a place to relax and unwind after earning their stripes in their chosen domain. To others, it is a professional and entrepreneurial arena that they’ve entered in the hope of winning their spurs. To still others, it’s ground zero in their pursuit of happiness, the destination of their journey, their raison d’être.

But to almost everyone who lives, works, plays (and shops) in this city of superlatives with a heart of gold, Dubai is a home away from home. The united nations of cities, Dubai embraces people from over 200 nationalities without judging them for their faith, race, age, gender – or disability. It’s a city that welcomes anyone and everyone with the right intentions.

My Second Home Group plans third luxury UAE pet care resort and eyes international expansion

The group's commitment to pet well-being and enrichment appeals to its loyal members

gnFocus

Of all history’s great thinkers and leaders, Albert Einstein wasn’t exactly top-of-mind when Dubai’s My Second Home luxury pet care resorts were being planned back in April 2015.

But the theoretical physicist nailed the essence of the group’s approach to world class dog and cat care when he suggested that while logic can get us from A to B, it’s imagination that can take us everywhere else.

And while the three My Second Home Founders and General Manager Sean Parker have relied on vision, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to indulge their passion for pet care, they’ve also dared to dream.

As a result of their imagination (and quite a bit of logic!), on any given day the two boarding, day care, grooming, training, and retail facilities offer a truly home-from-home socialising and enrichment experience to 300 adored dogs and 25 cats on behalf of almost 4,000 owners.

The first resort in Dubai Investment Park, is vast and includes the world’s largest indoor free play dog park as well as indoor and outdoor pools and outdoor off-leash recreation areas. Covering 5,800 square metres (the equivalent of around 30 tennis courts), it was opened with a $2.7m investment from Co-Founder Sanjiv Dhiman.

The second, built to meet demand for a replica resort from more northerly dog owners, opened in mid-2021 in the busy Al Quoz area. It offers the same level of professionally managed service and quality but in about half the space. It was part of an additional $10m stepped investment commitment by Dhiman in animal wellbeing, socialisation and enrichment which also includes plans for a third UAE resort as well as the launch of the first My Second Home pet care facilities outside the UAE.

Attention to detail

“Doing something special for the dogs and cats of Dubai on this scale once, was tricky. But replicating such a big commitment to their welfare more than once, was the real test,” said Dhiman. “Although we’re still learning lessons even after seven years, owners reassured us that we were providing what their dogs and cats needed and so we felt the time was right to cater for the needs of more animals up in Al Quoz.

“Coming off the back of an astonishing summer and with both resorts having been fully booked for Christmas for several weeks, we’re again under pressure from owners to care for even more of the UAE’s dogs and cats and so a third resort seems to make sense. We’re also very excited about offering our luxury services to owners and their beloved pets in some relevant international markets. Our approach seems to suit Dubai’s dogs, so why not share the love overseas!”

Aside from the vast amount of indoor and outdoor recreation and socialisation space that the My Second Home resorts provide, it’s the attention to detail, rigid safety and welfare protocols and commitment to pet wellbeing and enrichment that appeals most to the group’s loyal Members.

“Pet owners tend to know what they want, and they want it consistently,” said Robin Hill. “That’s a big challenge for businesses that set their stall out to provide a world class service — particularly in crucial areas such as pick-up and drop-off. Sure, there are occasional delays — Dubai’s roads are unpredictable. But the key is that as anxious owners, we’re continually informed. And yes — it may not be the cheapest pet taxi service in town. But who cares, because for a pet owner, knowing that the service level will be right every time, is priceless. And that’s the My Second Home difference. They’ve taken the time to understand our family’s needs — and particularly Leroy’s.”

Owner Manal Fahby added: “It’s more of a way of life for Sparky than a day care or boarding facility. And that’s all down to the people. The Reception team, the Handlers, the Trainers, the Groomers, the Managers. They all know exactly how to manage guests on both four legs and two. As Members, when we talk among ourselves, we call it the My Second Home Magic — because the way they get it so right really is astonishing.”

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Essay

Introduction, reference list.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the most economically successful urban areas in the United Arab Emirates. These emirates’ economic and social progress directly depends on the development of the oil industry.

In spite of the controversial aspects which are associated with the issues of economic and environmental sustainability, the planning and housing in Abu Dhabi and Dubai are the important developed sectors which are promoted by the governments to satisfy the citizens’ needs with the help of the developed housing programmes and projects.

Although the housing policies and programmes developed and implemented in Abu Dhabi and Dubai differ in some conditions and aspects, the basic principles and norms on which the policies and programmes are based are similar and work to protect the citizens’ rights.

The projects worked out in Abu Dhabi and Dubai respond to the idea of social and environmental sustainability, and the housing programmes are developed to address the citizens’ needs and resolve the housing problems.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) consist of seven federal emirates, and the paper focuses on the discussion of the development of such emirates as Abu Dhabi and Dubai which economic and social progress is associated with the effective government policies implemented within the economic and social spheres. Several decades ago, the territories of Abu Dhabi and Dubai were deserts, and today they are prosperous urban regions.

The main purpose of this report is to examine the functioning of governmental housing policies and programmes, the main trends in the real estate markets of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and the property rights followed in the emirates which can influence the development of the housing policies; it is necessary to analyze the data on the housing programmes’ implementation and to compare the information on the functioning of the policies in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The reason for writing the report is the necessity to examine the factors that shape the growth of Abu Dhabi and Dubai in relation to the accepted planning and housing policies. The results of this report can be used to work out the recommendations that can improve the economic and environmental sustainability of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The report is developed to address several significant assumptions. It is possible to assume that the rapid demographic and economic growth of Dubai and Abu Dhabi is based on the development of the oil industry in the country (Sayigh 2013, p. 131).

However, it is also important to pay attention to the fact that there are different visions of the rapid economic development of the UAE in relation to the impact on the environment (Norton 2005). The study is conducted to examine the economic and environmental sustainability of the hosing policies, projects, and programmes used in Dubai and Abu Dhabi (Hawkins 2004; Kazimee 2012, p. 179).

These assumptions are helpful for evaluating the development of these two emirates in relation to the efficiency of many housing programs implemented in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

This report contains a literature review in which the history of housing policies in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is discussed, the discussion of the urban development in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the discussion of property rights and housing policies in the emirates, the discussion of the government housing policies and programmes in Dubai and Abu Dhabi with the focus on their similarities and differences, and the results and discussion sections which provide the comparison and overview of the report findings.

A Place I Call Home

My home is situated in the city. It is not too big nor too small, just the perfect size. My family lives in the home. It comprises of my father, mother, sister and grandparents. We live in our ancestral home so my home is very vintage.

It is very old but remains to be super strong. There are six rooms in my home. Each family member has a unique room which they have decorated as per their liking. For instance, my elder sister is a big fan of music, so her walls are filled with posters of musicians like BTS, RM, and more.

Our drawing room is a large one with a high ceiling. We still use the vintage sofa set which my grandmother got as a wedding gift. Similarly, there is a vintage TV and radio which she uses till date.

Adjoining the drawing room is my bedroom. It is my favourite room because it contains everything that I love. I have a pet guinea pig which lives in a cage in my room. We also have a storeroom which is filled with things we don’t use but also cannot discard.

Our lawn in front of the house has a little garden. In that garden , my mother is growing her own kitchen garden. She is passionate about it and brings different seeds every month to grow them out and use them in our food.

The fondest memories I have in a place is my terrace. Our terrace is huge with many plants. I remember all the good times we have spent there as a family. Moreover, we play there a lot when my cousins come over. Thus, every nook and corner of my home is special to me.
