Everybody dressed up to the nine in the rose garden. People wear colorful clothes that’s why spring is my favorite season.

General Rules:

Here are some general rules about Part 1 that you may find useful. The point of Task 1 is for you to answer shortly to many questions. Think of it like an interview where you need to answer questions about yourself. You should:

Keep it short. When you practice, in general try to answer in 15 to 20 seconds per question.

Give at least 1 reason and 1 real-life example. again very general but try to have at least 1 real example in your answer., talk about yourself. this part is all related to you (if the question doesn't say another person)..

So, lets take a look at some questions:

Vocabulary related to the topic

Sentence starters and linking words, idioms or special phrases, what's the weather like where you live.

This is where I live right now. (China, Zhuhai)

I live in a small seaside city called Zhuhai, and as a southern Chinese city , the weather is mainly hot and humid . The summer lasts for quite a while , and some people joke about it being over six months long . The temperatures can go up to 35 in the summer but do get down to 10 in the short winter .

My Personal Answer:

Do you prefer cold weather or hot weather?

I prefer the warm and sunny weather of the summer. This is my favorite time of the year when I can enjoy a nice walk in the park , absorb some sunshine and feel warm and comfortable . I don't like cold, at all .

Do you prefer dry weather or wet weather?

Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast when how often.

Well, as we all have smartphones these days, I receive it directly on my screen . Every time I turn my phone on , I see a notification and an icon of the weather forecast . Now If I want to learn more information , I could click on it and get a detailed forecast . I don't do that so often though. I think the icon is more than enough for me to know the temperature and the type of weather I have to expect .

I am an absolute nature lover and am always awestruck by the natural phenomena that change every now and then. It has always been a matter of intrigue for me. However, besides being beguiled by the complexity of these phenomena, something that I am even more interested in is the variety in seasons and weather and especially the weather that we have in the spring season. I am quite a balanced personality myself and in that case, I love everything which is just balanced well and is not extreme at any end. Therefore, the weather where there is not too much scorching heat and not too much blood-chilling cold is what I love the most.

This kind of weather only actuates in the spring season around Feb-March, and honestly, that is the reason why these months are one of my favourite as I do not have to be fidgeted about wearing too many clothes or worrying about the heat rash that I generally get given the fact that I am sensitive to heat.

Usually, there is nothing peculiar or eccentric that I do or, for that matter, I don’t have any planned endeavours to do in this particular weather. However, it has got more to do with my comfort and composure that I could live my life smoothly in this particular weather.

Meaning: process Eg.: These phenomena are really interesting and beautiful.

Meaning: to be surprised by something you find interesting. Eg.: I was awestruck at the beauty of that bird.

Meaning: interest g.: Nature can often intrigue you by any of its aspects.

Meaning: worried about something Eg.: I fidgeted about the result as I didn’t perform well in the exams.

Meaning: special/unique Eg.: I don’t think there are any peculiar features of this building.

Part 3 Questions

How does the weather (or the weather forecast) affect the activities people do.

The weather decides the fate of a lot of activities. For instance, if we plan to go for an excursion, rain could ruin the plans. Also, weather forecasts can prognosticate the weather of a particular day well in advance and in that way, it becomes a lot easier for us to determine our plans for the day and whether to execute our plans or not.

Why do some people dislike some kind of weather?

It highly depends upon the persona of a person. For example, some might love when it drizzles, while some might completely despise rain. Similarly, some might like basking in the sun, while some might not like to tan. Hence, it has more to do with personal preferences.

Do you think the weather has an influence on people’s moods?

I guess yes, it does. To illustrate, people might not want to step out of their homes when it is too sunny to handle and this way, some might get irksome and tetchy as they could not execute some crucial action. Also, pleasant weather generally casts a soothing effect on the minds of people.

How do you feel about the climate in recent years?

Well, the climate has been going haywire in recent years. It seems as though the word ‘balance’ has lost its true meaning. The most unexpected weather comes to the fore when it is highly unlikely to come. I believe humans are culpable in this regard.

Meaning: to predict Eg.: The sage prognosticated the fate of that man years ago.

Meaning: sprinkles of drops Eg.: I love the drizzle, though I don’t like when it heavily rains.

Introduction

Although I have some fun to do in all kinds of weathers like swimming in scorching heat and sipping coffee in cold temperatures, the weather that I like the most is rainy.

In my city, usually, rain comes in July, August and September months.
However, sometimes it comes in February and March too.

What kind of weather it is?

This weather is a blessing for most people.
Some people call it romantic weather and some take it as a blessing from the almighty.
The summers of my city are harsh.
So whenever rain comes, we get respite from the relentless heat.

What you usually do during this weather?

Generally, I go for a long drive during rainy days.
Being a food lover, I love to eat my favourite snacks like cutlets and spring rolls accompanied by espresso coffee to make full use of this weather.
Apart from this, I participate in rain dance parties.

It acts as a stress buster for me because I do not enjoy the hot and humid climate.
This weather makes me feel close to my mother nature.
Moreover, I have immense respect for the farmers because they pamper our appetite by producing food. I feel good because farmers feel rejuvenated during rainfall.
Apart from this, after the downpour, my city roads look clean, and the air we breathe is pristine. I can enjoy my walk in a better way.
On the contrary, sometimes this weather irritates me, especially when I indulge in playing outdoor sports like cricket and football and all of a sudden rain comes to disrupt our game.

Also, climate change has made the weather unpredictable. It sometimes rains even in the dry season as such knowing the weather on a day-to-day basis has become a necessity.

People prefer to stay indoors on hot sunny days or rainy days and go out for picnics on pleasant days.

Also, there are things we like to eat in certain weather – for example, fritters on rainy days, ice creams on warm days, etc. It also affects the clothing patterns. People wear light-colored loose cotton dresses in summers and dark warm clothes in cold weather.

Yes, the weather affects our economy. For example, due to milder winters, a lot of people from cold northern countries visit us during that time.

Thus it promotes tourism. Also, certain weather like hot sunny days boosts the earning of local ice cream vendors. Similarly, winters boost the jackets and sweaters industry.

7. (Similar but different) (In your country), are there any differences in economic activity in the different seasons?

There are differences in certain economic activities. For example, warm clothes’ industry gets a boost in the winter season. Similarly, farming is also dependent upon seasons – certain crops like rice are grown in summers whereas others like wheat in winters.

There are certain topics in the IELTS exam which can be considered quite common. They are not guaranteed to appear in your next exam, but they are common enough that you really should spend some time studying them. One of these super common IELTS topics is weather .

I’m sure that when you first began learning English, you learned to talk about the weather. In my first teaching job, I taught this topic to kindergarten students. Even those cute little 3-year-olds could say, “It’s a sunny day!” or “It is raining.” Of course, for IELTS you need to be able to produce more advanced language than that!

Today, I want to tell you all about weather as a topic for your IELTS test. I’ll explain a little about how it might appear in the exam, and also give you some useful language for describing it.

IELTS Speaking Questions about Weather

The IELTS speaking test is by far the most likely part of the exam to contain questions about weather. This topic could appear in any of the three parts of the speaking test, but it is most likely to occur in part one as the topic is rather shallow. In part one, you aren’t expected to say very much, and so this is the best place for simple questions about things like weather. Here are ten example questions about weather from IELTS speaking part 1:

What’s the weather like where you live?
Does the weather affect your mood?
Do you like sunny days?
What type of weather do you like best?
Does the weather ever affect what you do?
Does it bother you much when it rains?
What do you like to do on sunny days?
Does it rain a lot in your hometown?
Which months have the best weather in your country?
Does rain ever affect transportation in your hometown?

All of those questions are quite simple, factual matters. There is no real complexity to them because they would be asked in part one and you will only be expected to give a basic answer. For example, let’s look at two of the questions from above:

It rains a lot in my hometown, even in the summer. Sometimes it’s sunny but it’s never really very warm.
I really like warm, sunny days the best. When the weather is like that, you can go out and do interesting things rather than being stuck indoors.

You can see that in those answers, I have given only two sentences as a reply. You might think that this is not enough, but actually it is perfectly fine. Notice that I also didn’t use any complex vocabulary. This is also acceptable because for part one the questions really will be simple. You might have a chance to show off more in part three, but don’t worry about it. Sometimes it’s best to use simple language with a high degree of accuracy.

Part two is a little harder to predict, and it’s less likely that you will get a weather question here, but it could still happen. Two cue cards that you might possibly encounter will ask you to do the following:

Describe your favourite kind of weather.
Describe a time when you experienced extreme weather conditions.

In each case, you would need to follow the cue card and give an appropriate response. Here is a video about describing a season, which has some overlap with the topic of weather.

Part three might have questions about weather as well, but remember that here they will be more complex and abstract. In this section, questions often get into morality, gender, age, and other difficult issues. There isn’t really too much that could be said about weather here, but you might find something like the following:

Do you think that weather affects people’s behaviour?

Notice that this is similar to a question from part one, but now we are talking about people in general , rather than your personal opinion. This is much harder to do, and of course here you are expected to speak for longer. You might give an answer like this:

I think that weather definitely affects people’s behaviour. You just have to go outside on a sunny day to see how friendly people are compared to when it’s raining. Also, when the weather is really bad you see people looking depressed and often acting with impatience towards others. People do things like fight over taxis or push rudely past each other when it’s rainy and cold. So, yeah, it definitely has an impact.

This answer is much longer than my first ones, and you can see how each sentence sort of adds a little more to the idea. There is also a basic introduction and conclusion as I tell my listener what I think and then summarize what I said. But is there much difficult weather vocabulary? Not really. There isn’t too much that you can really say in a question like this, as it relates more to a person’s mood than actual weather.

Weather for IELTS Writing

It is less common that you will encounter the topic of weather for IELTS writing, but it could still happen. For one example, you may see weather appear in task 1 as you have to describe patterns of rainfall or hours of sunshine. However, this really wouldn’t require much knowledge of the weather, as you are just expected to describe what you see.

For task 2, there is definitely more scope but the topic of weather is a bit limited. Instead, you would probably see it arise within the greater topic of environment . For example, look at the following question and sample answer. I will highlight some useful vocabulary that may be helpful for you in giving more complex descriptions of weather and the related issue of global warming.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Question: Weather

Global warming is one of the biggest threats to our environment. What causes global warming? What solutions are there to this problem?

Sample Answer

It is clear that the earth’s climate is changing due to human activity. The weather is growing increasingly erratic , and temperatures are soaring in many places. This essay will explore the reasons for this, as well as some possible solutions.

Our modern style of living is causing huge damage to the planet in a number of ways. For one thing, people want constant comfort in their homes, and this means huge amounts of energy must be generated to provide them with electricity, not to mention the production of goods that make them feel happy. As such, power stations and factories around the world ch urn out huge volumes of emissions that go straight into the atmosphere and cause terrible damage. This is compounded by emissions from cars and airplanes, which are also continually rising as the population grows and people become more mobile. Altogether, these cause global warming by changing the earth’s atmosphere and trapping heat .

The problem needs to be dealt with immediately or else there will be no chance of saving the planet later. Governments around the world need to work together to stamp out toxic emissions from factories, power stations, and transportation. Once lowered, these should also be offset by planting more trees to replace carbon dioxide with oxygen. Doing all this will take a massive effort, but it is important that the world is in agreement. Primarily, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of governments, who will need to impose regulations to stop corporations and individuals from perpetrating more destruction upon the environment .

In conclusion, the earth is dying because of human actions, and the whole world will need to act immediately to reverse the damage.

IELTS Reading and Listening Topic: Weather

I don’t really recommend preparing for IELTS reading and listening in terms of topic because actually the topics here are much wider, particularly for reading. In the reading test, you could be given a passage about almost anything, and for listening the final lecture is pretty much the same. Theoretically, any of those could well relate to weather, but you wouldn’t really be expected to know that much about it. Instead, you’d just be expected to have the basic English skills required to pick apart the grammar and main ideas.

Of course, knowing about the weather is useful and you should definitely study it. Reading and listening to English sources like news articles is always helpful and if these are about weather, it may give you a slightly better chance at IELTS listening and reading. (Pro tip: Try watching the weather forecast in English.)

Important Language for Discussing the Weather

As we have seen, most of the questions that are likely to arise in IELTS relating to the topic of weather are actually quite simple, and you wouldn’t need to know complex terminology for the topic. It would be enough to know words like hot, cold, rain, sun, etc. Of course, you also need to know the noun and adjective forms:

Most that is pretty simple, but if you want to impress the examiner a little more, you can try using slightly more specific language. By this, I mean that you don’t just have to say “rain” or “rainy.” It rains a lot in the UK, so we have many words for this type of weather. 😄

We can use other nouns to describe particular kinds of rain:

We can also use an adjective to modify the word “rain”:

Driving rain
Pouring rain
Torrential rain
Freezing rain

We could also use some verbs to talk about how it was raining:

The rain battered down around us.
It was pouring rain all night.
The rain seemed to go right through us.
It just sprinkled down for an hour and then stopped.

You see, it is possible to extend your vocabulary a little from “rain” to using a wider range of language. None of those words or phrases is particularly “advanced” but they all offer a chance to go beyond the most basic and obvious term.

When talking about weather, there are different types of word that we can use. I showed you above that we can vary how we talk about rain by using verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Well, that is possible for some types of weather.

We can say “it is + adjective”:

It is sunny.
It is rainy.

Or “it is a(n) adjective + day”:

It is a sunny day.
It is a rainy day.

We can also say “it is verb+ing”:

It is raining.
It is snowing.

Or we can even use “there +noun”:

There is snow outside.
There will be thunder later.

Some words can be adapted to all forms:

It’s raining! (verb)
It’s rainy! (adjective)
There’s been a lot of rain recently. (noun)

However, others can’t:

It’s sunning!
It’s sunny!
There’s been a lot of sunshine recently.

Here is a PPT I made for my former students. It contains some interesting language about weather. I recommend that you download it and play it on your computer so that you can challenge yourself without seeing the answers first.

I would like to mention here that I have missed out some apparently obvious questions from above. The questions I might have also included were things like, “What’s your favourite season?” Actually, I feel that there is a slight distinction between seasons and weather , and so I will keep this particular article devoted to the latter. It could also be argued that there is some crossover into the topic of climate change and environment because obviously the current phenomenon of global warming is related to the weather. However, I will also leave this aside for now and just focus on more basic weather questions.

I would love to tell you about that weather which makes me happy inside out, and it’s rainy weather.

This weather occurs randomly. I’m not a fan of the rainy season, which comes in June-July in India, and during the rainy season, it rains all the time; it makes me depressed. I mostly like rainy and cloudy weather, which occurs during the summers for a day or two. It gives relief from the sizzler days.

I go out with my sisters and brother for the outing on our bicycles, which we usually don’t do. The way the cold breeze hits my body and gives me goosebumps is just unexplainable. I do not have words to express how cheerful I feel during such weather.

Due to the pleasant weather, I cook Indian fried foods such as Pakoras and Samosas. My friends and family say I am a good cook, and all the family members enjoy the delicious dishes with flavored tea. I love tea with the flavor of cardamoms.

I was born in Hanoi and have been living here for pretty much my whole life. Hanoi is known for all kinds of things, from street food to crazy rush hour traffic . And the city is also unique when it comes to how fickle the weather is. In the summer, the mornings can be so scorching hot that you won’t want to leave your house or office, and then all of a sudden it’ll be raining cats and dogs in the afternoon. Perhaps for someone who has spent more than 20 years living here, I somehow know the best time of year to go out and enjoy a picnic or go on a bicycle tour with your friends: and that’s late autumn.

The weather during the last two weeks of October is just ideal for all kinds of activities. I mean, who doesn’t love looking at a pure blue sky ? Or who doesn’t love having a change of scenery after a torturously hot Summer, instead, having a good time with your family in a gentle breeze ? And people always say that during this time of year, Hanoi is the most beautiful.

This is also when I like to spend some quality time with my mum and dad and other people around me. We usually invite some neighbours around and have a barbecue out in the open . My dad has a very old cassette player, that he seems to be very proud of, maybe because no one in the neighbourhood has this kind of thing anymore, and he always brings it out during the barbecue and listens to some sport news with his friends while enjoying a few beers . Other people usually turn on some music and sing along. It’s just like a feast of a small Viking clan, and it is so fun to be a part of.

Living in a city where the weather can be so harsh and pretty much unpredictable all year round, I think having 2 weeks or so of perfect weather where I can have a truly joyous occasion with my family and neighbours isn’t so bad.

Vocabulary highlights:

1. rush hour traffic – when traffic is the busiest

2. unique – one of a kind

3. fickle – changing suddenly or often

4. scorching hot – very hot

5. raining cats and dogs (idiom) – raining heavily

6. ideal – perfect

7. pure blue sky – a very blue sky without a cloud

8. a change of scenery – to go somewhere different after being in one place for a long time

9. torturously hot – extremely hot

10. a gentle breeze – a light wind

11. quality time – time that you spend with someone to improve your relationship

12. out in the open – outdoors eg. in a park

13. enjoying a few beers – drinking some beer with friends

14. so harsh – unkind or not nice

15. a truly joyous occasion – a very happy occasion

IELTS SPEAKING PART 1 WEATHER [ANSWERS]

Do you prefer cold or hot weather?

(Answer 1)

I absolutely prefer cold weather to hot weather because it’s more comfortable. I hate hot weather because I sweat a lot and I feel discomfort that I can’t work well. Besides, I easily get irritated and get headaches due to heat intensity. And because of that, I don’t like summer days, at all.

(Answer 2)

That’s a very easy question – I prefer hot weather to cold weather. I love hot weather because I enjoy sunny days. It actually brightens my day and it makes me so inspired to do some water activities such as swimming or snorkeling. Well, I tried living in a country where cold weather is extreme and I just loathed it because I felt depressed.

What’s the weather like in the place where you live?

Well, I’m lucky that our state doesn’t have extreme weather conditions compared to other states where people can experience extreme cold and hot weather. The weather condition in our place is just mild. We have bearable (tolerable) cold and hot days and because of that, a lot of local tourists visit our place when they feel the discomfort of the weather that they have in their own states.

Since I’m living in a tropical country, most of the time our weather is hot but it’s actually hotter during summertime. We sometimes reach 41-42 degrees Celsius and honestly, that is extremely hot in my opinion. Well, I love summertime but I’m not a fan of (not liking something much) 42 degrees Celsius. That for me is unbearable and I normally just stay at home when the weather is that hot.

Do you check the weather forecast before going out?/Are you in the habit of checking the weather forecast?

Yes, always! That’s simply because I want to wear something that suits best the weather condition of the day and I need to be aware if there’s a storm coming so I can be prepared. You know, it’s better to prepare than to feel sorry and it doesn’t cost anything to check the weather before leaving the house, anyway.

Yes, I do but not regularly since I’m living in a tropical country. Well, most of the time, the weather condition here doesn’t change a lot. We have dry and rainy seasons so we can expect what the weather is like almost every single day. It doesn’t change that much.

Would you like to visit other cities that have different climates from where you live?

Of course! Who wouldn’t want to? (rhetorical question – to add dramatic effect) It’s exciting to experience freezing temperatures in winter and play in the snow in a different city. Also, enjoying the cool breeze that autumn brings while being surrounded (be all around) by the beauty of maple trees with red, yellow, or orange leaves is a great experience. So, who wouldn’t want to experience any of these?

Well, this country is tropical (hot and humid) so the temperature of almost all cities is just the same. But if we talk about visiting another country to experience the four seasons, yes, I would love to. In fact, I make sure to visit another country every year to experience either winter or autumn. What do you think are the effects of climate change in recent years?

I believe extreme weather conditions are the effects of climate change. I notice that during winter time, the weather is extremely cold that some countries experience a negative 20 degrees Celsius or even more than that, and when it’s summertime, a heat wave is inevitable in some parts of the world. Well, this is the price that we have to pay (the unpleasant or difficult aspect that one must face) for not taking care of our planet.

I really think the natural disasters that happen from time to time in different parts of the world are the common effects of climate change in recent years. Different countries experience different calamities such as hurricanes, typhoons, forest fires, drought, floods, and the like (and similar things) . Although the world experiences any of these, world leaders don’t make any serious effort to address the issue of climate change. All of them are just paying lip service (to express support for something without taking any significant action) to the world.

Which do you like better, dry or wet weather?

I prefer the former ( refers to the first mentioned) since I can be very productive ( fruitful) . When the sun’s up, I’m usually loaded ( filled) with so much energy. Also, I’m a person whose mood is greatly influenced by the weather, so if it’s dry and sunny I can work more efficiently and happily, however, if it’s rainy I can be as lazy as a sloth ( a sloth refers to a mammal that moves very slowly) .

What kind of weather do you like the most?

Well as I’ve just said, I like dry or sunny weather. There are no other types of weather that can suffice ( be sufficient; be enough; do; serve) the happiness that I feel on sunny days, as I can do various things such as running errands ( doing a lot of things at a time: going out to buy something, going to the bank, etc.) , doing the laundry, taking a walk in the park, and swimming.

Without a doubt ( indisputably) , it’s summer! The ambiance ( atmosphere) of summertime is just so different – people’s faces are painted with happiness. That’s because they can enjoy staying outside and doing some outdoor activities with family and friends. Actually, I dream of living in tropical ( having warm or humid weather) countries since those types of countries have the happiest people. I imagine how beautiful their life is.

Can you tell me the typical weather in your hometown?

Well, my hometown is no different from any other place in my country. We do have four seasons. When it’s winter, we experience below-zero degrees ( a temperature that is negative) . When it’s autumn or spring, we have chilly and rainy days, and when it’s summer, our temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius. The temperature in summer is just manageable ( doable) but not in winter.

Whether you’re at the coffee machine or waiting your turn at the post office, you might get into a casual conversation with the person next to you about what’s happening outside.

Here are some phrases to talk about the weather in English.

Both of these are good questions to ask if you haven’t gone outside in a while, and you’re wondering if things have changed.

Or maybe you’re still debating about whether or not you want to venture (go) outdoors, so you might ask this to someone who comes inside.

This question is asking about degrees in Fahrenheit or Celsius . However, people are typically looking for an approximate temperature:

It’s around 40°.

Of course, an answer like the following is still acceptable:

It’s really (hot/cold/warm/cool).

If you’re planning a trip or event, you might want to know the weather ahead of time. Forecast simply refers to what kind of weather is expected in the coming days or weeks.

Use other adjectives like nice or gorgeous to make your descriptions more interesting.

This is a simple sentence using two or more descriptive adjectives.

It’s warm and windy outside.

Blue skies is a phrase meaning a sign of good weather:

There’s nothing but blue skies outside.

Here the use of the comparative adjective better suggests that the weather is so good that it couldn’t get any better. You could use other comparative adjectives like nicer or more beautiful .

We couldn’t ask for nicer weather this week!

The superlative adjective best is used to show that this weather is simply the best and nothing else can be better. You can also use worse with this sentence structure.

Here’s another example:

This is the most beautiful weather we’ve had all week!

This is the worst weather we’ve had all spring!

Using the question form can be quite refreshing, especially when you expect the person to agree with you. You could use similar adjectives like nasty or terrible instead.

Nasty weather today, isn’t it?

The word boiling is used here as an adjective, not as a verb, to create an image of how hot it is. You could also use adverbs like extremely or really .

In this simple sentence, you may use any verb in its -ing form to describe the weather, such as pouring (raining very heavily) or sizzling (very hot).

Here’s a simple way to express your surprise. Feel free to use any other suitable noun such as storm or wind .

This is a popular idiom (expression) for saying that it’s raining heavily. Have fun with it.

Here you’re saying it looks like it might rain in the near future. It could be that you can see dark clouds or hear thunder. You could use other nouns like snow or a storm .

The phrase seems to be suggests that a storm is likely to be coming. You could also say:

Heavy rain seems to be heading this way.

Warming up means the temperatures will be rising and it’s getting warmer. The opposite of that would be:

The weather will be cooling down soon.

The phrase expected to be suggests that you think it’ll happen.

Use a comparative adjective here to compare the weather now with another time in the past. You could use other comparative adjectives like colder or less windy .

In English, the words “weather,” “climate” and “temperature” usually aren’t interchangeable. This means they have slightly different meanings.

Weather is used to describe what’s going on outside. For example, the weather can be stormy, sunny, cloudy or rainy.

Climate refers to the weather tendencies of a place. For example, the climate of Texas—a state in the United States—can be described as scorching hot summers and mild winters.

Finally, the temperature is how hot or cold it is outside. In most countries, the temperature is expressed in degrees Celsius. But in the United States, you’ll hear the degrees in Fahrenheit.

Weather is the day-to-day state of atmosphere and pertains to short term changes in conditions of heat, moisture and air movement. In other words, the instantaneous state of atmosphere can be called as weather. It is usually expressed as fine, fair, foggy, cloudy, rainy, sunny or windy weather.

The process of exchange of heat and moisture between earth and atmosphere over a long period of time (month, season, and year) related to large areas (zone, state, country, continent) results in conditions what we call climate.

It is aggregate of atmospheric conditions involving heat, moisture and air movement. In other words, the totality of weather over a large area is known as climate. It is expressed as marine, continental, arid, semiarid, humid or desert climate.

The differences between weather and climate are:

Geographical factors influencing weather and climate are referred to as climatic controls .

The distance from the equator (latitude), either from south or north, largely creates variation in climate. Based on latitude, the climate has been classified as tropical, subtropical, temperate and polar climates. The height from mean sea level (altitude/elevation) adds to variation in climate.

Temperature and pressure decreases with increasing height from mean sea level. Based on altitude, the climate is described as mountainous and valley/plateau climates. Nearness to large bodies of water also causes variation in climate. The climates are referred to as continental and maritime.

Instruments for Measuring Weather Parameters :

Different instruments are used for measuring weather parameters in observatories and laboratories. Depending on the level of accuracy required and the cost, instruments are used for recording the weather data.

Irrespective of whether it is an observatory or a lab. Table 2.1 gives a list or of instruments and weather parameter measured:

Climatic parameters are determined, primarily, by geographic factors such as:

1. Latitude.

2. Altitude.

3. Distance from large water bodies.

4. Ocean currents.

5. Intensity of wind.

All the above climatic parameters influence the wind. Three geographic factors—altitude, latitude and longitude are important for crop production. These are embodied in Hopkin Bioclimatic Law. It states that crop production activities (planting to harvest) and specific morphological developments are delayed by 4 days for each 1° latitude, 5° longitude and 12 m (40 ft) of altitude as one move northward and upward, respectively.

Intensity, velocity and direction of wind vary with three geographic factors leading to variation in climate and weather.

Geographic surface features such as large bodies of water and mountain ranges modify the wind characteristics and hence the meteorological parameters. A mountain range in the path of prevailing wind creates moist conditions on the windward side and dry conditions on the leeward side. Air cools adiabatically to the dew point as it rises up the mountains.

The air that is forced upward by the mountain range loses its moisture and becomes a dry mass when it goes over the top. This is called the orographic effect (relief effect), which is different from the usual rainfall without mountains. Topography influences weather and microclimate through variation in temperature and wind.

Water is normally warmer than the surrounding land. When wind blows over a large body of water, it picks up moisture, thus creating a more moderate leeward condition. The leeward side of the body of water is subjected to less temperature fluctuations (relatively stable weather) compared to windward side. Windward side is suitable for drought tolerant crops and leeward side to relatively drought sensitive crops. North facing and south facing slopes may differ in climate and natural vegetation. These sites differ in crops that can be grown.

World climate is not static but is subjected to changes caused by factors such as systematic changes in solar activity, sea level, atmospheric carbon dioxide and continental drift. Continental drift gradually changes the latitudinal position of the land masses and the sea level. Volcanic explosions discharge large amounts of dust and gases into the atmosphere. This may cause a decline in temperature (reverse of greenhouse effect).

Accumulation of greenhouse gases is responsible for global warming (gradual increasing trend in global average temperature largely due to greenhouse effect). In spite of technological advances in modern crop production, crop production is still subject to the vagaries of the weather that are manifested in three main ways— moisture stress, temperature stress and natural disasters.

Q: I tend to feel more tired than usual when it’s cloudy or rainy. Why is that?

If you’re feeling tired on an overcast day, it could be for any number of reasons, experts say. Maybe it’s because you’re lounging around at home and not as active as you usually are. Or maybe the change in atmospheric pressure is causing a headache or other aches and pains .

Or perhaps, said Dr. Alfred J. Lewy, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at Oregon Health & Science University, it’s because of something else going on in your body that experts don’t fully understand.

The truth is, scientists don’t know how — or even if — daily weather changes like the occasional overcast day can influence energy levels.

“It’s kind of a mess to study,” said Kelly Rohan, a professor of psychological science and a clinical psychologist at the University of Vermont. And research on the topic is sparse.

Not everyone has the same response to the weather , the experts said. Some people hate the rain or are especially sensitive to a lack of sunlight, while others cannot stand a sweltering summer day.

“ We’d love to say there’s an easy answer, but there just isn’t,” said Dr. Paul H. Desan, a psychiatrist and director of the Winter Depression Research Clinic at the Yale School of Medicine.

The best research has tried to tease out how certain aspects of a day — like the temperature or atmospheric pressure, or how sunny, cloudy or rainy it is — might affect your mood while controlling for other factors like the season and how much time you spent outside. Most of these studies have not measured energy levels alone, Dr. Rohan said, but have assessed mood by asking people questions about how they’re feeling as well as how active or alert they are.

Dr. Rohan’s read on that research, she said, is that for most people, the weather’s influence on day-to-day mood is “either nonexistent or very subtle.”

In a 2010 study of more than 14,000 people in the Netherlands, for example, researchers concluded that weather conditions were not associated with a low mood. And a 2008 study of more than 1,200 people in Germany found that the average effect of weather on mood was small, and that both sunny and rainy days were associated with tiredness.

In general, Dr. Rohan said, your daily stress, such as from relationships or work, is probably going to affect your mood “much more than the weather forecast.”

Fleeting feelings of lethargy should not be confused with seasonal affective disorder , or SAD, the experts said. SAD is a type of depression that affects about 5 percent of adults in the United States — it is more common among women than it is among men and it tends to run in families. Typically, SAD arrives in the fall or winter and it lingers, regardless of daily weather fluctuations, before finally going away in the spring. (Though you can also experience SAD during the spring and summer months .)

In winter, what triggers SAD is not the overcast days, but the shorter days that result in the sun rising later than it would during spring or summer.

“You’ve got enough light on a cloudy day to treat winter depression, but it’s not at the right time,” said Dr. Lewy, who is an expert on internal clock disorders. For most people, the bright light therapy used for SAD should take place in the early morning hours, the closer to wake time the better, he added.

It might also be tempting to assume that melatonin, a hormone that helps induce sleep, could contribute to feelings of sluggishness on an overcast day, because it’s produced at night and is associated with darkness. But “melatonin is always turned off by the body clock in the morning, even in the absence of light,” Dr. Lewy said, so the hormone does not play a role in daytime fatigue.

If you find yourself dragging during the occasional cloudy day, it can help to focus on getting more rest at night and incorporating more energy-creating strategies into your day, such as taking movement breaks or focusing on what you eat . It might just be the boost you’re looking for.

A large part of the residents is poor and lives in one of the many ugly buildings that were built during the time of the iron curtain. The center is the playground for a handful of extremely rich Russians that made their money with the export of oil. Moscow has a moderate continental climate with cold winters and warm summers. From December till February the Red Square and the streets of Moscow are covered in snow. Temperatures are -5 to -15 degrees Celsius on average. However, temperatures may even drop lower. During the frosty period a large amount of the homeless dies on the streets. When spring starts in April temperatures rapidly rise. Because of the absence of a tempering influence of the sea temperatures may rise to 40 degrees during the summer.

Weather forecasts have become much more accurate; we now need to make them available to everyone

A four-day forecast today is as accurate as a one-day forecast 30 years ago..

Weather forecasts are often seen as just a nice thing to have. Useful when planning a Sunday barbecue, or when we want to know if we’ll need an umbrella for the day. But in many ways weather forecasts are absolutely crucial: they can be a matter of life and death.

Accurate forecasts can save lives by giving early warnings of storms, heat waves, and disasters. Farmers use them for agricultural management, which can make the difference between a lost harvest or a harvest of plenty. Grid operators rely on accurate forecasts of temperatures for heating and cooling demand, and how much energy they’ll get from wind and solar farms. Pilots and sailors need them to carry people across oceans safely. Accurate information about future weather is often absolutely vital.

In this article, I look at improvements over time and the global inequalities that need to be closed to protect lives and livelihoods around the world.

Weather forecasts have improved a lot

Weather forecasting has come a long way. In 650 B.C. the Babylonians would try to predict weather patterns based on cloud patterns and movements. Three centuries later, Aristotle wrote Meteorologica , discussing how phenomena such as rain, hail, hurricanes, and lightning formed. Much of it turned out to be wrong, but it represents one of the first attempts to explain how the weather works in detail.

It wasn’t until 1859 that the UK’s Meteorological Service (the Met Office) issued its first weather forecast for shipping. Two years later, it broadcasted its first public weather forecast. While meteorological measurements improved over time, the massive step-change in predictions came with the use of computerized numerical modeling. This didn’t start until a century later, in the 1960s.

Forecasts have improved a lot since then. We can see this across a range of measurements, and different national meteorological organizations.

The Met Office says its four-day forecasts are now as accurate as its one-day forecasts were 30 years ago.

Predictions have gotten much better in the United States, too. We can see this in some of the most important forecasts: the prediction of hurricanes.

The National Hurricane Center publishes data on the “track error” of hurricanes and cyclones — the error in where the hurricane hits. This is shown in the chart below, from the 1960s onwards.

Each line represents the error of forecasts for different time periods in advance. For example, 12 hours before it hits, all the way up to 120 hours (or 5 days) before.

We can see that this track error — especially for longer-term forecasts — has decreased a lot over time. In the 1970s, a 48-hour forecast had an error between 200 and 400 nautical miles; today this is around 50 nautical miles.

We can show the same data another way. In the chart below, each line represents the average error for each decade. On the horizontal axis we have the forecast period, again extending from 0 to 120 hours.

The 72-hour error in the 1960s and 70s was over 400 nautical miles. Today, it’s less than 80 miles.

Meteorologists can now make pretty accurate predictions of where a hurricane will hit three or four days in advance, which lets cities and communities prepare while preventing unnecessary evacuations that might have been implemented in the past.

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) produces global numerical weather models. While national weather agencies use much higher-resolution processing to get local forecasts, these global models provide a crucial input into these systems.

The ECMWF publishes analyses of its errors over time. This is shown in the chart below. 1 It shows the difference between the forecast and the actual weather outcome for forecasts 3, 5, 7, and 10 days in advance. The metric used here is the “ 500 hPa geopotential height ”, a commonly used meteorological measure of air pressure (which dictates weather patterns).

The solid line is for the Northern Hemisphere, and the dashed line is for the Southern.

Three-day forecasts — shown in blue — have been pretty accurate since the 1980s, and have still gotten a lot better over time. Today the accuracy is around 97%.

The biggest improvements we’ve seen are for longer timeframes. By the early 2000s, 5-day forecasts were “highly accurate” and 7-day forecasts are reaching that threshold today. 10-day forecasts aren’t quite there yet but are getting better.

Why have weather forecasts improved?

A few key developments explain these improvements . 2

The first big change is that the data has improved. More extensive and higher-resolution observations can be used as inputs into the weather models. This is because we have more and better satellite data, and because land-based stations are covering many more areas around the globe, and at a higher density. The precision of these instruments has improved, too.

These observations are then fed into numerical prediction models to forecast the weather. That brings us to the next two developments. The computers on which these models are run have gotten much faster. Faster speeds are crucial: the Met Office now chunks the world into grids of smaller and smaller squares. While they once modeled the world in 90-kilometer-wide squares, they are now down to a grid of 1.5-kilometer squares. That means many more calculations need to be run to get this high-resolution map. The methods to turn the observations into model outputs have also improved. We’ve gone from very simple visions of the world to methods that can capture the complexity of these systems in detail.

The final crucial factor is how these forecasts are communicated. Not long ago, you could only get daily updates in the daily newspaper. With the rise of radio and TV, you could get a few notices per day. Now, we can get minute-by-minute updates online or on our smartphones.

Low-income countries have much worse forecasts, and often no early warning systems

At home in Scotland, I can open an app on my phone and get a pretty accurate 5-day forecast within seconds. Unfortunately, this quality of information isn’t available to everyone. There are large differences in weather forecasts across the world, with a large gap between rich and poor.

As the researchers Manuel Linsenmeier and Jeffrey Shrader report in a recent paper , a 7-day forecast in a rich country can be more accurate than a one-day forecast in some low-income ones. 3

While national forecasts have improved over time across all income levels, the quality gap today is almost as wide as it was in the 1980s.

There are a few reasons for this. First, far fewer land-based instruments and radiosondes measure meteorological data in poorer countries. Second, the frequency of reporting is much lower.

This is unsurprising when we look at the amount of money spent on weather and climate information. In a paper published in Science , Lucian Georgeson, Mark Maslin, and Martyn Poessinouw looked at differences in spending across income groups. 4 This includes private and public spending on commercial products that fall within the definition of “weather and climate information services”.

This is shown as the spending per person , and the spending as a share of gross domestic product (GDP) in the chart below.

Low-income countries spend 15 to 20 times less per person than high-income countries. But given the size of their economies, they actually spend more as a share of GDP.

This gap is a problem. 60% of workers in low-income countries are employed in agriculture , arguably the most weather-dependent sector. Most are small-scale farmers , who are often extremely poor.

Having accurate weather forecasts can help farmers make better decisions. They can get information on the best time to plant their crops. They know in advance when irrigation will be most needed, or when fertilizers might be at risk of being washed away. They can receive alerts about pest and disease outbreaks so they can either protect their crops when an attack is coming or save pesticides when the risk is low. That means they can use precious resources most efficiently if they have access to accurate weather forecasts. Good weather forecasts are most crucial for the poorest people in the world.

They’re also crucial for protecting against cyclones, heat waves, flooding, and storm surges. Having accurate forecasts several days in advance allows cities and communities to prepare. Housing can be protected, and emergency services can be on standby to help with the recovery.

But accurate forecasts alone don’t solve the problem: they’re only useful if they are disseminated to people so they can respond. Many of the deadliest disasters over the last few decades were accurately forecasted ahead of time. The common failure was poor communication. 5

Improving forecasts is the foundation. But these also need to be incorporated into effective early warning systems. The World Meteorological Organization estimates that around one-third of the world — predominantly the poorest countries — do not have them.

Improving forecasts — especially in low-income countries — is underrated

After the big progress in recent decades, we take good weather forecasting and dissemination for granted in large parts of the world. Making this available to everyone would make a difference.

This will be even more important as climate change increases the risks of weather-related disasters. It is ultimately the poorest, who are the more vulnerable, who will suffer the worst consequences. Better forecasts are key to good climate change adaptation.

Proper investment and financial support will be essential to close the gaps.

There also emerging technologies that could accelerate this. A recent paper published in Nature documented a new artificial intelligence (AI) system — Pangu-Weather — that can perform forecasts as accurately (or better) than leading meteorological agencies up to 10,000 times faster. 6 It was trained on 39 years of historical data. The speed of these forecasts would make them much cheaper to run and could provide much better results for countries with limited budgets.

Faster and more efficient technologies can also fill the gaps where land-based weather stations aren’t available. Sensor-carrying drones can run surveys over specific areas to build higher-resolution maps. With lower-cost and more efficient ways of turning that into forecasts, mobile technologies can disseminate this information quickly. Some companies are already sending messages to farmers in low-income countries to advise them on the best time to plant their crops.

This innovation is crucial to making countries more resilient to weather today. But it’s also essential in a world where weather is likely to get more extreme.

People hate budgeting. Here's why — and how to reframe it

A recent poll concluded 68% of consumers say a budget would help them reach their personal and family goals, yet 40% say they have never had a budge, by greg iacurci,cnbc • published 2 hours ago • updated 1 hour ago.

The concept often leads to a sense of deprivation, comparable to the notion of dieting, experts said.
There are some easy ways to reframe the budgeting exercise more positively.

However, reframing the concept can yield more positive results, experts said.

They "cringe" at the word budgeting, said Winnie Sun, co-founder of Sun Group Wealth Partners, based in Irvine, California.

"It's sort of like telling someone they need to diet and eat healthy," said Sun, a member of CNBC's Advisor Council . "It's a very overwhelming concept for the average consumer."

About 68% of consumers say a budget would help them reach their personal and family goals, yet 40% say they have never had a budget, according to a poll by the CFP Board, which oversees the certified financial planner designation, published in 2019.

Sun estimates more than 60% of her clients "feel as if they're literally going to suffer" if Sun mentions budgeting.

Conversations around budgeting are generally distilled into two camps: spending on needs (i.e., essential items) and wants (nonessential items).

This framework is meant to help weigh one's financial priorities, thereby keeping spending in check, wrote Sarah Newcomb, a behavioral economist at Morningstar.

But the exercise can turn budgeting into a feeling of deprivation — and people rebel as a result.

The classic financial advice of slashing spending on wants such as entertainment, social connection, dating and education, for example, is at odds with "the natural process of human motivation," Newcomb wrote.

"Yes, the numbers must work, but your life must work, too," she wrote. "Otherwise, you'll internally resist your budget, and we all know how that can play out."

How you should reframe budgeting

Financial experts recommend reframing the budgeting concept as a positive rather than a negative.

For example, households can think of it as "raising funds" instead of cutting spending, Sun said.

They can also establish financial goals. For example, what do they want to do with their extra funds? That may be paying down debt, saving for the long term or growing a pot of money for shorter-term goals such as a vacation, Sun said.

"We let the goals lead the act of budgeting," she said.

"For me, a budget is not about restricting myself," Lynnette Khalfani-Cox, a personal finance expert known as the Money Coach, said during a Q&A with JPMorgan Chase and Essence. "It's about choosing how I allocate my resources and how I spend my money."

Similarly, Newcomb recommends identifying new strategies that can meet one's needs and simultaneously save money.

Newcomb gives the real-life example of a husband and wife who argued about how much money he spends on his boat each year. His needs are about self-actualization: He enjoys the wind in his hair and the sun on his face. She seeks safety and security, which are also important to her quality of life.

Here, the husband found a new strategy: offering sailing lessons to teens at his yacht club, which helped offset the cost of his boat and allowed his wife to funnel that additional income into savings.

There are other easy ways households can find extra money without sacrificing much, Sun said.

For example, households with more than one streaming service can opt to use one service for six months then change to another for the next six months, decreasing their streaming budget by 50%, she said.

Households with an ample emergency fund intact can consider shopping for auto and other insurance policies with a higher deductible than their current policy, likely lowering monthly premiums, Sun said. In the event of an insurance claim, the emergency fund can meet the deductible, she said.

They can also commit to doing curbside pickup when shopping for groceries, for example. Shoppers make purchases more mindfully and avoid in-store impulse buying, Sun said. She finds clients generally save 20% to 25% or more on their groceries this way.

Any additional cash flow can immediately be used to pay down debt, or go into long-term savings or toward a short-term goal, she said.

Ultimately, if there is a money issue, she challenges clients to decrease their spending by 5% to 10% during the month. After each week of success, she encourages them to celebrate by making memories instead of debt: perhaps by doing something with friends, or hanging out at a park, beach or someone's backyard.

"You have to have a joy to replace that negative," she said.

DEAR ANNIE: I have a dear friend with a loving dog, but I dread going to her house because her dog enthusiastically jumps up on me for the first few minutes I am there. I have tried doing what she asks me to do -- turning my back on him -- and have been not doing what she doesn’t want me to do -- putting my knee out to keep him back or sternly saying “no.”

But he gets no better at any subsequent visit with her method of dealing with it.

I have had, and fostered, numerous dogs and have trained them to not jump up with just a few minutes of training. I’m coming off caring for her dog while she was out of town and am very over her dog jumping on me. She lives alone and relies on her friends to step in with the dog’s care when she travels.
