Common mistakes to avoid when writing Bakery Worker Cover letter

Writing a Bakery Worker cover letter is an important step in the job application process. While there are no hard- and- fast rules for writing a successful cover letter, there are certain mistakes that can be avoided to make the best impression on potential employers.

Here are some of the most common mistakes to avoid when writing a Bakery Worker cover letter:

  • Not tailoring the cover letter to the job: A generic cover letter is a surefire way to get your application tossed out. Make sure your cover letter clearly states why you are the perfect fit for the job and how your skills and experience make you the ideal candidate.
  • Not mentioning important details: Include specifics about why you are the right person for the job. If you are knowledgeable about certain types of bread or cake- making, be sure to mention that in your cover letter.

By avoiding these common mistakes when writing your Bakery Worker cover letter, you can make sure your application stands out from the crowd and increases your chances of getting the job.

Storytelling/Narrative Writing Style Example

As I strolled through the vibrant farmer’s market on a crisp autumn morning, the warm, inviting aroma of freshly baked bread enveloped my senses, instantly transporting me back to my childhood. It was in my grandmother’s cozy kitchen, filled with the sweet scent of her homemade pastries, where my passion for baking first ignited. I remember watching in awe as she skillfully kneaded dough, transforming simple ingredients into mouthwatering masterpieces that brought our family together. Inspired by her devotion and artistry, I vowed to carry on her legacy by pursuing a career in the baking industry.

Since then, I have acquired over 10 years of experience in various bakeries, perfecting my craft and honing my leadership skills. As the Assistant Manager at my current workplace, I have gained valuable insights into inventory management, employee training, and quality control. I have also implemented innovative marketing strategies, resulting in a 25% increase in sales over the past year.

However, the moment that truly made me realize my potential as a Bakery Manager occurred during a sudden, unexpected absence of our head manager. Tasked with leading the team during this challenging time, I quickly stepped up and seamlessly coordinated operations, ensuring that our high standards of quality and customer satisfaction were maintained. This experience confirmed my ability to handle the responsibilities of a Bakery Manager, and it reinforced my dedication to creating an environment in which both employees and customers can flourish.

I am confident that my combination of passion, experience, and leadership skills make me the ideal candidate for the Bakery Manager position at your esteemed organization. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss how my background aligns with your vision and goals, and how together, we can continue to create memorable experiences through the magic of baking.

Cupcakes creating an 'emotional bond' with Russian consumers

Although cupcakes were first mentioned in an American cookbook in 1796, they truly came into their own in the 1990s. The first Magnolia Bakery, whose cupcakes may have caused the feeding frenzy around the small, portable desserts, opened in New York City in 1996, and was popularized through on-screen appearances in TV shows like Sex in the City and movies such as The Devil Wears Prada.  “You can spend all the time in the world at the gym and die for healthy food, but if you're left alone with a cupcake… That will be your little secret,” said Magnolia’s owner and CEO Steve Abrams in an interview with Russian magazine Afisha. “Why do people like cupcakes? I don't know. They're small and cute. People have different tastes, and there can be as many cupcakes as there are tastes. They remind you of the childhood, of grandma’s and mama’s cooking, of something nostalgic. Cupcakes create an emotional bond.”

Magnolia, which has outlets as far afield as Beirut, Dubai and Tokyo, recently added Moscow to the list of cities it has conquered. Despite the difficult political and economic situation in Russia, Abrams is sure that the new store will as successful as the company’s other international branches.

“We’re a happy brand, not worried about the politics,” said Abrams in an interview with Bloomberg. “We think Russia in general can be a bigger play for us.”

Abrams is planning to open at least five cafes in Moscow in the following years, predicting sales to be above the average. The first shop is located at Kuznetsky Most, in the center of the Russian capital near the Kremlin.

Magnolia is not the first cupcake shop in Moscow, however. That honor goes to the Upside Down Cake Company (UDC), created in 2010 by American chef Isaac Correa. The editors of Moscow's online lifestyle magazine The Village don't think that UDC has much to fear from Magnolia, however. According to The Village, UDC has done alot to adapt to the tastes and preferences of the Russian market by making its products less sweet and using more natural ingredients, whereas Magnolia plans to stick to the same standard flavorings and products it offers at its other outlets.

Magnolia is more likely to compete with the restaurants in the Friends Forever chain, which also offer traditional American-style sweets. Pavel Kosterenko, co-founder of Friends Forever Co, says they serve cupcakes at all of their establishments, which include a cafe called simply I Love Cake.

«When we opened our first project, Friends Forever, six years ago, the cupcake was the main character on our menu. For us it's not just a dessert in a cafe, but a lovely present as well. It's a very beautiful and tasty dessert. Many of our guests already know what a cupcake is, so they come to us boldly. We make various flavors, but I think caramel is the most popular,» Kostrenko said.

Russian pay-per-minute cafe to open in New York

Cupcakes may be replacing cheesecake as the most popular of American desserts in Russia. One benefit of cupcakes is that they are easy to make at home, and Kostarenko says that the pastry counters in his restaurants may soon face competion from home cooks. «The new generation is already training at home, making cupcakes, cakes and pies. So I believe there'll be a lot of experienced hands in our country soon.» Kostarenko said, adding that from a profitablity standpoint, it doesn't matter to him whether his customers buy more cupcakes than cheesecake. “We never compared a cupcake to a cheesecake, we never even thought what sold better. The goal is to make them and put them in the display case.»

Along with that, you’ll want to submit any required essays, making sure they highlight your aspirations and your personality. You can even strengthen your application by including additional information about yourself and a résumé.

Most colleges will require an application fee. If you require financial assistance to cover this fee, ask your school counselor about application fee waivers.

What are five things you need to know about college application process?

When navigating college admissions requirements, consider these five points:

  • Go through each college's admissions requirements, including transcripts, test scores, essays, and recommendations.
  • Pay close attention to submission deadlines to ensure you deliver all required documents on time.
  • Familiarize yourself with the admissions criteria, including academic performance, extracurricular activities, and personal attributes.

Is the admissions process the same for all colleges?

The admissions process can differ between institutions. Colleges you apply to may ask for standardized test scores and recommendation letters. Or they may have more specific requirements. Before you even begin an application, you’ll need to review the admissions guidelines of each college you plan to apply to and personalize your application to their needs.

How important are extracurricular activities in the college admissions process?

Participating in extracurricular activities can significantly influence the college admissions process. Colleges seek students who aren’t only academically accomplished but also have a diverse range of interests and a demonstrated dedication to their passions. Being actively involved in clubs, sports, community service, and leadership roles can positively impact your application and highlight your potential contributions to the college community.

Are interviews required for college admission? How should I prepare for them?

Colleges may require interviews as part of their admissions process, or they may not require them. You’ll want to verify the specific requirements of each college. If a college recommends an interview or it’s mandatory, make sure to prepare yourself thoroughly. Practice answering common interview questions, research the college, and think about how to express your objectives and interests effectively. Interviews offer a chance to present yourself in a more personal and engaging way, so take advantage of this opportunity.

Did One Guy Just Stop a Huge Cyberattack?

A Microsoft engineer noticed something was off on a piece of software he worked on. He soon discovered someone was probably trying to gain access to computers all over the world.

Reporting from San Francisco

  • April 3, 2024

The internet, as anyone who works deep in its trenches will tell you, is not a smooth, well-oiled machine.

It’s a messy patchwork that has been assembled over decades, and is held together with the digital equivalent of Scotch tape and bubble gum. Much of it relies on open-source software that is thanklessly maintained by a small army of volunteer programmers who fix the bugs, patch the holes and ensure the whole rickety contraption, which is responsible for trillions of dollars in global G.D.P., keeps chugging along.

Last week, one of those programmers may have saved the internet from huge trouble.

His name is Andres Freund. He’s a 38-year-old software engineer who lives in San Francisco and works at Microsoft. His job involves developing a piece of open-source database software known as PostgreSQL, whose details would probably bore you to tears if I could explain them correctly, which I can’t.

Recently, while doing some routine maintenance, Mr. Freund inadvertently found a backdoor hidden in a piece of software that is part of the Linux operating system. The backdoor was a possible prelude to a major cyberattack that experts say could have caused enormous damage, if it had succeeded.

Now, in a twist fit for Hollywood, tech leaders and cybersecurity researchers are hailing Mr. Freund as a hero. Satya Nadella, the chief executive of Microsoft, praised his “curiosity and craftsmanship.” An admirer called him “the silverback gorilla of nerds.” Engineers have been circulating an old, famous-among-programmers web comic about how all modern digital infrastructure rests on a project maintained by some random guy in Nebraska . (In their telling, Mr. Freund is the random guy from Nebraska.)

In an interview this week, Mr. Freund — who is actually a soft-spoken, German-born coder who declined to have his photo taken for this story — said that becoming an internet folk hero had been disorienting.

“I find it very odd,” he said. “I’m a fairly private person who just sits in front of the computer and hacks on code.”

The saga began earlier this year, when Mr. Freund was flying back from a visit to his parents in Germany. While reviewing a log of automated tests, he noticed a few error messages he didn’t recognize. He was jet-lagged, and the messages didn’t seem urgent, so he filed them away in his memory.

But a few weeks later, while running some more tests at home, he noticed that an application called SSH, which is used to log into computers remotely, was using more processing power than normal. He traced the issue to a set of data compression tools called xz Utils, and wondered if it was related to the earlier errors he’d seen.

(Don’t worry if these names are Greek to you. All you really need to know is that these are all small pieces of the Linux operating system, which is probably the most important piece of open-source software in the world. The vast majority of the world’s servers — including those used by banks, hospitals, governments and Fortune 500 companies — run on Linux, which makes its security a matter of global importance.)

Like other popular open-source software, Linux gets updated all the time, and most bugs are the result of innocent mistakes. But when Mr. Freund looked closely at the source code for xz Utils, he saw clues that it had been intentionally tampered with.

In particular, he found that someone had planted malicious code in the latest versions of xz Utils. The code, known as a backdoor, would allow its creator to hijack a user’s SSH connection and secretly run their own code on that user’s machine.

In the cybersecurity world, a database engineer inadvertently finding a backdoor in a core Linux feature is a little like a bakery worker who smells a freshly baked loaf of bread, senses something is off and correctly deduces that someone has tampered with the entire global yeast supply. It’s the kind of intuition that requires years of experience and obsessive attention to detail, plus a healthy dose of luck.

At first, Mr. Freund doubted his own findings. Had he really discovered a backdoor in one of the world’s most heavily scrutinized open-source programs?

“It felt surreal,” he said. “There were moments where I was like, I must have just had a bad night of sleep and had some fever dreams.”

But his digging kept turning up new evidence, and last week, Mr. Freund sent his findings to a group of open-source software developers. The news set the tech world on fire. Within hours, a fix was developed and some researchers were crediting him with preventing a potentially historic cyberattack.

“This could have been the most widespread and effective backdoor ever planted in any software product,” said Alex Stamos, the chief trust officer at SentinelOne, a cybersecurity research firm.

If it had gone undetected, Mr. Stamos said, the backdoor would have “given its creators a master key to any of the hundreds of millions of computers around the world that run SSH.” That key could have allowed them to steal private information, plant crippling malware, or cause major disruptions to infrastructure — all without being caught.

(The New York Times has sued Microsoft and its partner OpenAI on claims of copyright infringement involving artificial intelligence systems that generate text.)

Nobody knows who planted the backdoor. But the plot appears to have been so elaborate that some researchers believe only a nation with formidable hacking chops, such as Russia or China, could have attempted it.

According to some researchers who have gone back and looked at the evidence, the attacker appears to have used a pseudonym, “Jia Tan,” to suggest changes to xz Utils as far back as 2022. (Many open-source software projects are governed via hierarchy; developers suggest changes to a program’s code, then more experienced developers known as “maintainers” have to review and approve the changes.)

The attacker, using the Jia Tan name, appears to have spent several years slowly gaining the trust of other xz Utils developers and getting more control over the project, eventually becoming a maintainer, and finally inserting the code with the hidden backdoor earlier this year. (The new, compromised version of the code had been released, but was not yet in widespread use.)

Mr. Freund declined to guess who might have been behind the attack. But he said that whoever it was had been sophisticated enough to try to cover their tracks, including by adding code that made the backdoor harder to spot.

“It was very mysterious,” he said. “They clearly spent a lot of effort trying to hide what they were doing.”

Since his findings became public, Mr. Freund said, he had been helping the teams who are trying to reverse-engineer the attack and identify the culprit. But he’s been too busy to rest on his laurels. The next version of PostgreSQL, the database software he works on, is coming out later this year, and he’s trying to get some last-minute changes in before the deadline.

“I don’t really have time to go and have a celebratory drink,” he said.

Requesting an extension of time to file.

The tax return filing deadline is almost here.  If you haven’t filed yet, you should file timely to avoid possible penalties and interest. See below for tax return filing help.

Filing Help

For most people, your tax return needs to be filed by April 15.   If you need assistance with filing your tax return you can visit the  Filing for Individuals page ,  Online tools and resources  , or  Free tax preparation available for millions of families pages  on IRS.gov.

If you haven’t filed yet and you cannot do so by the due date, you can request more time. See below for how to request more time to file. Please be aware – there are  consequence to not filing at all .

Special Situations

In some situations, you may have an automatic extension of time to file and pay. This include, but are not limited to:

  • When April 15 falls on a holiday.
  • Military members serving in a combat zone.
  • Areas covered by a disaster declaration.
  • International taxpayers.

To request  more time to file your tax return , individuals can file  Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return . This allows you six more months to file. However, if you can file sooner, do it and don’t wait the whole six months. Instead of filing Form 4868, you can apply for an automatic extension by making an electronic payment by the due date of your return. You can pay online or by phone.

See  Extension of Time To File Your Tax Return on IRS.gov  for more details and for information on filing extension requests for special situations.

An Extension to File Does Not Mean You Can Wait to Pay

The IRS urges people with a filing requirement and a balance due to file by the April deadline even if they cannot pay in full. Taxpayers in this situation should pay what they can and consider a payment plan for the remaining balance. This is because any monies paid after the due date will incur interest  and   penalties (up to the maximum allowed by law) until the balance is fully paid. There are certain instances when some or all of the penalties charged can be waived , but interest isn’t generally waived for any reason other than an IRS delay.

Payment Options

There are several payment options, but you need to review them all and understand the consequences of each before you choose. You can visit our  I can’t pay my taxes  page for more information on where to start.

Other great resources are IRS provides various payment options for taxpayers who owe but can’t pay in full , and Paying Your Taxes .

The worst thing you can do is take no action! Get help for filing, paying, or both from the  IRS , a  Tax Return Preparer  or the  Taxpayer Advocate Service , if appropriate.

University of Wisconsin–Madison Graduate School: Notice of data incident

The University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison) is providing notice of a data incident involving certain electronic letters of recommendation (eLOR) submitted as part of the application for admission to the UW–Madison Graduate School.

Notifications

Potentially affected individuals have been notified by email, and information is posted on this webpage. Although the UW–Madison Graduate School receives a high volume of applications for admission each year, only a very small number of enrolled graduate students were affected by this data privacy issue.

What Happened

On January 18, 2024, UW–Madison discovered that internet search engines had accessed and stored certain UW–Madison Graduate School submitted electronic letters of recommendation in a way that allowed public access to those letters. UW–Madison responded by immediately taking the affected system offline and promptly engaging its Cybersecurity Incident Response Team to investigate the incident. Following a thorough inquiry, UW–Madison confirmed that the incident did not compromise any University Restricted data .

What Information Was Involved

Based on UW–Madison’s investigation, the incident potentially affected information submitted to the university by prospective students between December 29, 2021, and January 18, 2024, including:

  • Applicant’s name
  • Applicant’s email
  • Recommender’s name
  • Recommender’s email
  • Program applied for
  • A short questionnaire about the applicant rating them for skills and aptitudes
  • Letters of recommendation (if submitted)
  • Due date for the application

What We Are Doing

UW–Madison takes data security very seriously and is making consistent and strong efforts to protect a vast array of technology and information. Since learning of the incident, UW–Madison has taken multiple measures to address the issue.

The eLOR site was taken down immediately on January 18 and within days a secure system was implemented for the electronic submission of letters of recommendation. The university requested removal of the information from search engines shortly after taking down the site; Google, the dominant search engine, quickly honored the request.

Subsequent work by the UW–Madison Office of Cybersecurity and Graduate School include decommissioning the existing eLOR system and replacing it with a new platform, setting a retention schedule for electronic letters of recommendation, and ongoing review for security best practices.
