assignment radio 4

In the old time radio show Dangerous Assignment International Operative Steve Mitchell had only two jobs, to get in and out of danger. This old time radio spy series was well-received by listener's across America, despite the fact that it dealt with your typical Cold War fare. Veteran film actor Brian Donlevy breathed life into the character of Mitchell and convincingly portrayed the dangerous lifestyle the espionage had. The Commisioner, played by Herb Butterfield was a mysterious politician shrouded in intrigue. His plots and machinations would often land Mitchell in all sorts of hair-raising situations that would quickly snowball from bad to worse. However, Mitchell's quick wit and sharp reflexes would often allow him to escape safe and whole, if not a little unscathed. Needless to say, Dangerous Assignment with its high drama and fast-paced action sequences will always have a place in the list of the best loved old radio shows for all time. DANGEROUS ASSIGNMENT Ryan Ellett Dangerous Assignment , with Brian Donlevy in the lead role of Steve Mitchell, was developed by NBC during the summer of 1949 at a cost of $15,000. Other shows developed as part of this new programming blitz by the network included Dragnet at a cost of $34,000, Richard Diamond at $51,000, and Four Star Playhouse at $60,000. Seven episodes were broadcast that summer, from July 9 to August 20, 1949. When no sponsor stepped forward the show left the airwaves for six months. Originally scheduled to replace Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis’ program at 10:00 in early February 1950, Dangerous Assignment instead took Dave Garroway’s slot at 10:30 with Garroway pushed back to 11:30 while Night Beat claimed the 10:00 time. Sustained initially, in the spring of 1950 General Mills signed to take sponsorship of the show beginning May 10 as part of a large bundle sale with NBC. In September 1950 it was announced in the trades that Donlevy had formed a production company – New Colony, Inc. – to bring Dangerous Assignment to television. He purchased the video rights from writer Bob Ryfe, who was also the package owner, and signed Ryf to script the visual version in addition to continuing his radio responsibilities. While Donlevy funded the start-up himself, he had an understanding with radio sponsor General Mills that the cereal manufacturer would take over production costs if the initial results were satisfactory. When Dangerous Assignment was once again looking for a sponsor in 1951 NBC advertised to potential backers that it had a gross weekly cost of $4,117, in comparison to $1,823 for Hollywood Love Story and $8,820 per half hour of Tallulah Bankhead’s The Big Show . Dangerous Assignment ran until July 1953 on radio and could be found in syndication on various television stations throughout the 1950s and even into the early 1960s. An Australianbased version was produced in 1954. In addition to Donlevy as lead character Steve Mitchell, his boss The Commissioner was played by Herb Butterfield and the Commissioner’s secretary, Ruth, was played by Betty Moran. Under the authority of a never-named federal spy agency, every week secret agent Steve Mitchell was off to an exotic locale to solve an international mystery. Interestingly, destinations in U.S-allied countries were regularly identified, from Italy to France to Norway, while Communist-bloc nations were not, usually referred to as simply a Balkan or Eastern European country. Old-time radio author John Dunning found the episodes “predictable” but audiences found the series if not ground-breaking at least enjoyable enough to afford it more than three years on the airwaves. The head writer was Bob Ryf with Adrian Gendot frequently attributed as co-writer. Bill Cairn directed and Robert Armbruster provided music for most of the run. OTRR Definitions: OTRR Maintained Set -- This set contains all known episodes in the best available audio condition with the most accurate dates and titles known to be in general circulation and based on current research at the time of release. Replaces OTRR Certified Accurate and OTRR Certified Complete . OTRR Non-Maintained Set -- A collection of shows that has not gone through the OTRR Maintenance process. Pre-2019 OTRR Definitions: OTRR Certified Accurate -- A series that was "Certified Accurate" indicated that all the episodes were properly identified and labeled based on current information but that the series did not contain all known extant episodes. OTRR Certified Complete -- A series that was "Certified Complete" achieved the highest level of certification available under the OTRR Certified Standards. This certification level implied that all the files in the series were "Certified Accurate" and also indicated that the series was as complete as possible and included all circulating episodes. OTRR Non-Certified -- A collection of shows that has not gone through the OTRR Certification process. Also, beginning in 2019, the version numbers of our OTRR releases changed format -- instead of v1.0 or v2.1, we are now using a version number that reflects the year and month the set was released. The format used is a two-digit year followed by a two-digit month. For example, "v1906" indicates a set that was released in June 2019, or "v1910" indicates a set released in October 2019. NOTE: There are no passwords for any of our ZIP files. If you are prompted for a password, before downloading the file again, try unzipping the file into a shorter full folder path name -- for example, unzip to "C:\" instead of "C:\Documents and Settings\your_Windows_ID\some_other_folder\". Sorry, some of our releases contain long folder and file names, which sometimes manifests itself on the Windows platform as prompting for a password for the ZIP file. Or try renaming the ZIP file itself to a shorter name before unzipping.

Brian Donlevy

International spy series (1949 - 1953)

Dangerous Assignment Ad

The worldwide locations are dealt up with a feeling of local, and the characters that inhabit these far-away places with strange sounding names are solid and capably acted by veterans. Music is an almost harsh orchestra. Donlevy carries the plots with a world-weary and wary tone that makes sense, based on his occupation.

old time radio picture

It took Ian Fleming to put this genre back on the international map "big time" with his 1952 debut Bond novel, Casino Royale. First Bond novel, perhaps the best, with the most atmosphere, the most violence and Bond at his coldest and most ruthless - ridiculous Bond flick, even with Orson Welles . Fleming had passed on prior to the film's release, so he was one Bond fan who wasn't upset.

Announcements, unit order #4 - portable radio assignment and control.

PURPOSE OF THIS ORDER:

To establish procedures concerning the assignment, storage, and responsibilities associated with the care and distribution of portable radios.

The distribution of the Department issued portable radios will enable sworn personnel at Internal Affairs Bureau (IAB) to have instant access to emergency communications and assets, if the need arises.

This unit order is in addition to communications policies and regulations outlined in the Manual of Policy & Procedures.

All sworn personnel assigned to IAB will be assigned a portable radio, as needed.

The IAB Law Enforcement Technician (LET) will have the collateral duty to oversee the issuance and deployment of all portable radios.  The designated radio control person will maintain the radio inventory system, specifying the make, model number, serial number, and personnel assignments for each portable radio assigned to the Bureau.  Any portable radio not specifically assigned to an individual shall be safely stored in a locked and secured equipment cabinet inside the LET’s office.

All sworn personnel assigned to IAB will be required to store their assigned radio in a secure location, e.g., desk or overhead cabinet, in the “off” position.  Radios shall not be left unattended in the interior of vehicles.  If a radio must be left in a vehicle, it shall be locked in the trunk.

It is the responsibility of each individual assigned a portable radio to have his/her assigned radio with them during their working hours and during their rollout scheduling period.

Portable radios cost the Department approximately $1,000.  All personnel assigned a portable radio shall exercise reasonable and prudent precautions to prevent the loss or theft of their portable radio.

Lost or stolen radios pose a potential officer safety and homeland security risk.  In the event of the loss or theft of any Department radio, the concerned person shall immediately (upon realization) report the loss in compliance with Manual of Policy and Procedures section, 3-07/010.40.

The Unit Commander has the authority to revoke radio assignment privileges due to negligence by an assigned employee.

During an extended leave, radios shall be collected by the affected person’s immediate supervisor and returned to the LET.  Long term injuries/illness, including absences or vacations exceeding 30 calendar days, are cause to return a radio to the Bureau.

Sheriff’s Communication Center can provide periodic in-service training upon request.  Appropriate documentation of such training shall be maintained by the training staff using an APIS roster.

For additional information, refer to the attached policies pertaining to possession and care of portable radios.

3-07/010.10 DEPARTMENT AND FCC REGULATIONS

Radio frequencies (channels) and the licenses to operate radio equipment are issued to Los Angeles County for this Department by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).  All communications equipment and its use must conform to Department and FCC regulations including:

  • all temporary or permanent base Station equipment must be approved and licensed at the specified site;
  • all radio equipment must be FCC type-accepted and approved by the Director of OAS;
  • only communications which are essential to official police activities are permissible;
  • no indiscreet or profane remarks;
  • no superfluous or facetious wording or unauthorized communications,
  • no personal remarks or conversation; and
  • use of radio channels for training or simulation shall occur only with the prior approval of the SCC Watch Commander. Failure to comply with FCC Rules and Regulations violates federal law and jeopardizes this Department's license to operate.

3-01/040.15 CARE OF COUNTY PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT

A member shall be responsible for the care, maintenance and serviceable condition of any County property, fixed or movable, issued or assigned to him or otherwise in his care. Loss of, damage to or unserviceable condition of such property shall be reported to his Unit Commander.

Reasonable and prudent precaution shall be taken to prevent the loss or theft of County property. Exceptional care shall be exercised to prevent the loss or theft of security items such as evidence, weapons, radios, vests or tasers.

Loss or preventable theft of County property when the circumstances indicate that a greater degree of caution should have been taken to prevent such loss or theft, willful or negligent abuse, misuse, damage or destruction, shall be grounds for disciplinary action.

A parked vehicle left unattended on the street or in a driveway is particularly vulnerable to theft or burglary. Therefore, personnel shall assure that any County vehicle or any personally owned vehicle which contains County equipment is parked in a safe location and that any firearm, portable radio, evidence, confidential documents or high value County property are secured in the vehicle’s trunk, in a rack or a locked container (when available). All weapons shall be removed from any vehicle parked overnight outside of a secure garage. Absent exigent circumstances, any improperly secured equipment stolen from such an unattended vehicle shall be labeled a negligent loss. Consequently, the employee entrusted with the equipment shall, after consideration of all facts and circumstances, be subject to appropriate Department discipline, refer to section 3-03/060.00.

3-07/010.40 LOST/STOLEN/DAMAGED RADIO AND CELLULAR TELEPHONE EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES

  • When Department portable communications equipment or accessories are lost, stolen or damaged, the Unit at which it occurred shall:
  • make an immediate phone notification to CFMB, Logistics;
  • file an Incident Report (SH-R-49) and distribute as follows: o original to be imaged in the electronic archival system, SECDA; o one copy to the Auditor-Controller, Fixed Assets Unit; o one copy to accompany SH-AD-32A to the reporting Unit’s Division Chief or Division Director; and o one copy to CFMB Systems Maintenance Section;

Full description, i.e., brand name, model, size, etc.; o County serial number and/or the inventory control number; o a brief description of the circumstances surrounding the loss or damage; and o the Unit Commander's finding on the cause of the loss/damage and a determination of negligence involved;
  • after review by the Division Chief or Division Director, the SH-AD-32A shall be forwarded to the Chief of TSD, Attn: CFMB; and

Dangerous Assignment, Volume 4

Volume 4 of the Dangerous Assignment radio series! Yeah, danger is my assignment. I get sent to a lot of places I can't even pronounce. They all spell the same thing, though. Trouble." In this opening line heard on various episodes, Steve Mitchell, special agent for an unnamed agency protecting America from foreign threats, describes Dangerous Assignment perfectly. Focused on Mitchell's adventures around the world, Dangerous Assignment capitalized on the desire of Americans at the time for patriotic, stalwart heroes to stand up for them. Mitchell, as portrayed by Brian Donlevy definitely fit that bill. Hard-boiled delivery and two-...

It's been a banner year for women's college basketball, with Caitlin Clark becoming a household name and viewership up 60% across national networks.

Now, with March Madness upon us, we've talked with some of the other star players poised for a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

Here's what they told us — and what you should look out for this tournament.

  • Hannah Hidalgo
  • School/Team: Notre Dame Fighting Irish
  • Position: Guard

What's it like to have your dad be your basketball coach all through middle school and high school?

For Hannah Hidalgo, this was a good thing – even if he didn't take it easy on her.

"I think my dad was the hardest on me for sure, because he knew what I could accomplish," she said. "And he ... kind of saw greatness in me."

Today, Hidalgo is the top player for second-seeded Notre Dame.

The 5-foot-6-inch guard is the Division I basketball's third-leading scorer this season, and leads all players in steals — as a freshman.

One of her inspirations is Aari McDonald, who now plays in the WNBA.

"[McDonald] was a really small guard on the women's side," Hidalgo said. "Seeing how small she was and how she was able to score over girls that were like six-four, six-five, and just her ability to finish and get kind of leader at team, it was just like phenomenal."

Hidalgo has never let her height keep her down. In high school, she was the New Jersey player of the year, and led U.S. junior national teams to two FIBA World Cup gold medals.

With all the extra eyes on her now, she says her faith in God keeps her grounded amid criticism or praise in sports media. And for pre-game pump-up music, she opts for gospel.

"We're always listening to gospel music," she said. "[It] gets our mind focused. And then of course after gospel, I'll call my parents and we pray together before every single game."

Hidalgo says she remembers people looking down on women's basketball when she was younger. So she's happy to be seeing women finally getting mainstream recognition and also endorsement deals.

"So I kind of see how now we're able to make money off of our name and how many millions of people [are] watching this," she said. "Seeing these younger kids who are coming up now ... it makes you really excited to see kind of what's for the future."

  • JuJu Watkins

School/Team: University of Southern California Trojans

Juju Watkins has all the assets: she has the jump shot, the size and the speed.

And the University of Southern California freshman guard also has star power.

LeBron James has come out to see the USC women's team play. And USC legend Cheryl Miller has paid to see Watkins in action.

"I'm always in shock," Watkins said. "I mean, Cheryl's the GOAT of women's basketball, so for her to really buy tickets, when she probably could have got them for free, is crazy."

"I watched a lot of Candace Parker growing up and, of course, LeBron. With my generation, he's so influential. I try to model my game and my compassion after them."

Watkins is from the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts. Her great-grandfather established the Watts Labor Community Action Committee, an anti-poverty nonprofit, after the 1965 Watts Riots. And JuJu Watkins volunteered there in her childhood.

That's all part of her decision to attend USC.

"I think [at] USC there's rich history and I'm glad to be a part of that, so that was a big part of my decision-making process," she said. "And then just wanting to stay home and really grow my roots in L.A. and have that reach, I think that was important for me since I value my community so much and where I'm from."

Watkins said she believes she's continuing to grow as a person and a player.

"I was raised to really just pursue something to the fullest and really put a lot of time and energy into something I'm serious about. And I think basketball was that," she said.

As a freshman, Watkins has already led her team to a PAC-12 championship while becoming the second-leading scorer in Division I. And she says her squad is peaking at the right time for the big dance.

"We're finally, like, a true team now," she said. "I feel like everyone knows their roles, knows their spots and I think that as we continue to just stay level headed throughout everything, even coming off of a championship, we're not satisfied."

  • Te-Hina Paopao
  • School/Team: University of South Carolina Gamecocks

Te-Hina Paopao has a sweet tooth and a penchant for siestas.

"I'm such, like, a boring person for pre-game rituals," she said. "I always got to get a nap in, no matter if it's a noon game, afternoon, or even a night game."

Then, after the game — win or lose — it's time for dessert.

Paopao grew up in Oceanside, California with brothers who played a whole bunch of sports. Eventually, when she jumped in, something clicked on the basketball court.

And people noticed.

"I was entering eighth grade when I was getting calls from colleges and talking to college coaches. And I knew right then and there that I could do something big with this," she said.

Fast forward about eight years. For this season, Paopao transferred from Oregon to a powerhouse South Carolina program that went undefeated this season.

A key part of their success has been Paopao's long-range shooting. At the end of the regular season, the senior had the highest three-point percentage in all of women's Division I basketball.

But when it comes to inspiration, for Paopao it's not about accolades or fame — it's about her faith and her family's heritage.

"I know God has been there through every step of the way, through this journey that I've been journeying through since, you know, a young child," she said. "Because I take so much pride in wanting to make my family proud of me and just wanting to inspire the younger generation, especially for Polynesian hoopers."

Paopao isn't quite ready to go pro yet. Earlier this month, she announced she would return to South Carolina for a fifth season this fall.

"It wasn't a hard decision at all," she said. "And I knew if I had another year under Coach [Dawn] Staley I could be a much more all-around player and just get that improvement that I came looking for. And it was just everything that I was looking for in a program."

  • Alissa Pili
  • School/Team: University of Utah Utes
  • Position: Forward

Alissa Pili is the second oldest of nine kids who grew up in Alaska.

"All of my siblings played sports growing up, so there was always something to do," she said. "We're always watching each other's games and I mean, in Alaska, it was super fun, it was never boring. Definitely a lot of fighting, but it was all love at the end of the day."

Pili carried that competitive spirit through her adolescence, racking up more than a dozen state championships in volleyball, track and field, wrestling — and her main sport, basketball.

Then she was recruited to play for the University of Southern California. But she admits she lost her edge, especially after a close family member died.

So Pili — who is of Samoan and native Alaskan descent — went home. She recalibrated, and transferred to Utah.

Let the madness begin: 3 things to watch at the NCAA basketball tournaments

"When I got to Utah I think that I just got my groove back again," she said. "I really was just playing carefree, not thinking about it and that's kind of where I just took off."

That's an understatement. The senior was named the PAC-12's player of the year last season. In last year's NCAA tournament, Utah lost a close game to the eventual national champion, Louisiana State University.

"They won the championship and we were right there, and I think that was really just motivation that we compete with anybody when we play our best basketball," Pili said.

She says she lives for those moments.

"You got to have the attitude of you don't really care who you're going up against," she said. "I think playing a school that's supposed to be top dog or, like, a player who's the talk of the town, like, that kind of drives me to want to beat them more. I don't know, I gotta just show out."
