Academic Preparation

The best preparation for success at Hunter College is a full program of college-preparatory courses. The college recommends four years of English, four years of social studies, three years of mathematics, two years of foreign language, two years of laboratory science and one year of performing or visual arts.

In addition to providing a strong foundation for college-level coursework, the program recommended above fulfills the 16 units of high school work in academic courses required for admission to a CUNY senior college. High school students should check with guidance counselors to determine which courses are considered to be academically within the English, mathematics, science, social science, foreign language and fine and performing arts curricula. Freshman admission to Hunter College is competitive. Applicants are considered for admission on the basis of the overall strength of their academic preparation, which includes SAT/ACT scores, high school academic average, the number of academic subjects and the distribution of those courses. A diploma from an accredited high school, an equivalency diploma or a United States Armed Forces diploma is also required for entrance to the college. Neither a high school certificate nor an IEP diploma is acceptable. For more information on how to prepare to apply to Hunter College, visit  freshman admissions information .

Advanced Placement and College-Level Courses Taken while in High School

A maximum of 30 transfer credits can be awarded to students in a freshmen status through the following programs; College Entrance Examination Board Advanced Placement (AP), College-level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB) Exam and any college-level courses. Certain academic departments may have restrictions on the award of credits by examination. Check with the department.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Students need to score at least a 3 on the AP exam to earn credit and/or exemptions from requirements (some exams may require a 5). For more information on how Hunter evaluates AP exams for credit see our  Advanced Placement (AP) Examination Course Equivalencies sheet.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

In accordance with CUNY policy, students have two ways to earn credit from an International Baccalaureate (IB) program:

30+ POINTS WITH AN IB DIPLOMA: Students who have completed an IB Diploma with 30 points or higher may be awarded 30 credits (7 credits for each HL exam and 3 credits for each SL exam). See the International Baccalaureate Policy for more detailed information.

24-29 POINTS: Students with 24-29 points may be awarded credits for HL (Higher Level) IB exams with a grade of “5” or better in accordance with the equivalencies in our International Baccalaureate Policy.  SL (Standard Level) courses are not transferable with 29 points or less. An official IB transcript and diploma (if applicable) are required for credit review.

College Courses Taken While in High School

Students who have completed college-level coursework offered by an accredited college while in high school may receive credit for courses in which grades of C or better are earned (Grade of D or better if taken in the CUNY College Now Program). Students admitted prior to fall 2019 may only receive non-CUNY college credit for courses (with a grade of “C’ or better) that were not used toward their high school graduation requirements.

An official college transcript(s) is required in order to be evaluated for college credit at Hunter.

Make a calendar with any upcoming deadlines. Remember to include standardized testing which can take six months, as well as letters of recommendation, transcripts, and financial aid, which you can apply to even before being accepted to the school.

Financial Aid

The Office of Financial Aid at CUNY works hard to ensure that higher education is affordable and accessible to all our students. Even before you apply, we recommend that you file your FAFSA. Funding is usually on a first come, first serve basis. Your FAFSA is the document that allows your college to determine your eligibility for scholarships, grants, loans and work study. The Financing Your Graduate Education page contains much more information about the different types of funding, contact information for each financial aid office, and  Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) .

Standardized Tests

Your program may require you to take a standardized test. Make sure you check the requirements. You may have to take one of the following exams. You should take your exams no later than the five or six months before you apply giving you the appropriate amount of time to receive your results and then retake the test if necessary.

When taking your exams, make sure you indicate the schools that you would like the scores to be sent to.

  • GRE – The Graduate Record Examinations (usually required for admission into programs in the social sciences, humanities etc.)
  • GMAT – The Graduate Management Admission Test (required for admission into business school)
  • NYS Teachers Certification – New York State requires candidates in Education programs to take certain tests for admissions.
  • LSAT – Law School Admissions Test (required for admission into Law School)
  • TOEFL – Test of English as a Foreign Language (required for all international students unless you obtained your bachelor’s degree in an English-speaking country such as the U.K, the Netherlands or some Caribbean countries, please refer to the school admissions website for more information)

Prepare for exams

The length of time to prepare for the exam will vary depending on the person. When you learn which test your program may require, follow these steps to help you prepare:

  • Take a diagnostic test to measure your strengths and weaknesses. This will help you focus on the areas that you need improvement upon and give you an idea of how long you will need to study.
  • There are many external resources available to help you prepare for your examination, including apps for your phone, books, and websites. You can also enroll in a preparation course which will vary in price and duration. Choose the one that is best for you
  •   Baruch College and Lehman College offer GMAT and GRE Test Preparation Courses.

Personal Statement

Your personal statement can vary depending on which program you are applying to. The application may call for you to answer specific questions or you may be given little direction. This is all to help the program get a sense of who you are as an applicant, your unique abilities, your accomplishments, your past experiences, your personal and career goals and also how you think this particular program will allow you to reach these goals. You want to start writing three months prior to submitting your application . This will allow ample time to ask for critiques and for you to edit your work.

Letters of Recommendation

You will need two or more recommenders for your application. Make sure you know who your program expects a recommendation from (your professors, a supervisor, etc). You want to reach out to possible recommenders at least a month before you submit your application to give them adequate time to write your recommendation letter. You should pick someone who you have a professional relationship with and who can genuinely speak to your capabilities to succeed in the program.

Although the G.P.A requirements vary, in general, the minimum G.P.A. to enroll in a graduate program is a 3.0. Some programs may also require you to have taken a certain amount of credits or particular classes in a related field prior to beginning your degree. Make sure you go over the requirements and your qualifications and contact the program advisor if you have any questions. If needed, you may be able to take non-degree courses to fulfill prerequisite coursework. These courses will not count towards your graduate degree but will help you gain entry into a program.

International Students should pay particular attention to the international students’ page and the school admissions website to make sure that they are adhering to all the instructions and requirements for submitting a transcript from another country .

Your resume is used to give the graduate committee more information of why you would be a good candidate for the program. It should paint a picture of your academic career and any work experience that would enhance your experience in an advanced degree. It should not be too long (one to two pages) but list any extracurricular activities, research assistant work, honors and awards, work experience, volunteer opportunities, and any other relevant experience.

Supplemental Materials

Some colleges or programs will request that you submit additional essays, writing samples, portfolios, screenplays or short films as part of your application. Please pay attention to the specific program requirements because they are individualized to each program. Check with the program you are applying to for requirement details.

Additional Statement or Addendum

This is an additional opportunity to explain discrepancies or unique situations that may hurt your graduate school application. It is a brief statement that may address a low Standardized test score or grade and explain how/why this is not an accurate reflection of your abilities. Students must be very careful in adding this section as it is meant to address any questions or hesitations by the admissions professional when reviewing your application.

If you were educated outside of the United States and English is not your first language, you will have to take one of the following exams. Check with your desired campus to confirm which exam is accepted.

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE)

Find out more about TOEFL requirements .

In addition, your official documents may need to be translated before you apply. You should allow additional time to complete this process. Check with the college you are applying to for specific details.

Please fill out the fields below and submit the form. Some information is required and marked with asterisks. You will not be able to submit the form without filling the required fields. Please make sure that Email and Verify Email should match with each other.

Hunter College GPA Requirements

Many schools specify a minimum GPA requirement, but this is often just the bare minimum to submit an application without immediately getting rejected.

The GPA requirement that really matters is the GPA you need for a real chance of getting in. For this, we look at the school's average GPA for its current students.

Average GPA: 3.7

The average GPA at Hunter College is 3.7 .

image description

(Most schools use a weighted GPA out of 4.0, though some report an unweighted GPA.

With a GPA of 3.7, Hunter College requires you to be above average in your high school class. You'll need at least a mix of A's and B's, with more A's than B's. You can compensate for a lower GPA with harder classes, like AP or IB classes. This will show that you're able to handle more difficult academics than the average high school student.

If you're currently a junior or senior, your GPA is hard to change in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 3.7, you'll need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate . This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have higher GPAs than you.

SAT and ACT Requirements

Each school has different requirements for standardized testing. Only a few schools require the SAT or ACT, but many consider your scores if you choose to submit them.

Hunter College hasn't explicitly named a policy on SAT/ACT requirements, but because it's published average SAT or ACT scores (we'll cover this next), it's likely test flexible. Typically, these schools say, "if you feel your SAT or ACT score represents you well as a student, submit them. Otherwise, don't."

Despite this policy, the truth is that most students still take the SAT or ACT, and most applicants to Hunter College will submit their scores. If you don't submit scores, you'll have one fewer dimension to show that you're worthy of being admitted, compared to other students. We therefore recommend that you consider taking the SAT or ACT, and doing well.

Hunter College SAT Requirements

Many schools say they have no SAT score cutoff, but the truth is that there is a hidden SAT requirement. This is based on the school's average score.

Average SAT: 1240

The average SAT score composite at Hunter College is a 1240 on the 1600 SAT scale.

This score makes Hunter College Competitive for SAT test scores.

image description

Hunter College SAT Score Analysis (New 1600 SAT)

The 25th percentile SAT score is 1150, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1330. In other words, a 1150 on the SAT places you below average, while a 1330 will move you up to above average .

Here's the breakdown of SAT scores by section:

SAT Score Choice Policy

The Score Choice policy at your school is an important part of your testing strategy.

Hunter College has the Score Choice policy of "All Scores."

This means that Hunter College requires you to send all SAT scores you've ever taken to their office.

This sounds daunting, but most schools don't actually consider all your scores equally. For example, if you scored an 1300 on one test and a 1500 on another, they won't actually average the two tests.

More commonly, the school will take your highest score on a single test date. Even better, some schools form a Superscore - that is, they take your highest section score across all your test dates and combine them.

Some students are still worried about submitting too many test scores. They're afraid that Hunter College will look down on too many attempts to raise your score. But how many is too many?

From our research and talking to admissions officers, we've learned that 4-6 tests is a safe number to submit . The college understands that you want to have the best chance of admission, and retaking the test is a good way to do this. Within a reasonable number of tests, they honestly don't care how many times you've taken it. They'll just focus on your score.

If you take it more than 6 times, colleges start wondering why you're not improving with each test. They'll question your study skills and ability to improve.

But below 6 tests, we strongly encourage retaking the test to maximize your chances. If your SAT score is currently below a 1240, we strongly recommend that you consider prepping for the SAT and retaking it . You don't have much to lose, and you can potentially raise your score and significantly boost your chances of getting in.

Hunter College ACT Requirements

Just like for the SAT, Hunter College likely doesn't have a hard ACT cutoff, but if you score too low, your application will get tossed in the trash.

Average ACT: 24

The average ACT score at Hunter College is 24. This score makes Hunter College Moderately Competitive for ACT scores.

The 25th percentile ACT score is 21, and the 75th percentile ACT score is 27.

Even though Hunter College likely says they have no minimum ACT requirement, if you apply with a 21 or below, you'll have a very hard time getting in, unless you have something else very impressive in your application. There are so many applicants scoring 24 and above that a 21 will look academically weak.

ACT Score Sending Policy

If you're taking the ACT as opposed to the SAT, you have a huge advantage in how you send scores, and this dramatically affects your testing strategy.

Here it is: when you send ACT scores to colleges, you have absolute control over which tests you send. You could take 10 tests, and only send your highest one. This is unlike the SAT, where many schools require you to send all your tests ever taken.

This means that you have more chances than you think to improve your ACT score. To try to aim for the school's ACT requirement of 24 and above, you should try to take the ACT as many times as you can. When you have the final score that you're happy with, you can then send only that score to all your schools.

ACT Superscore Policy

By and large, most colleges do not superscore the ACT. (Superscore means that the school takes your best section scores from all the test dates you submit, and then combines them into the best possible composite score). Thus, most schools will just take your highest ACT score from a single sitting.

We weren't able to find the school's exact ACT policy, which most likely means that it does not Superscore. Regardless, you can choose your single best ACT score to send in to Hunter College, so you should prep until you reach our recommended target ACT score of 24.

SAT/ACT Writing Section Requirements

Currently, only the ACT has an optional essay section that all students can take. The SAT used to also have an optional Essay section, but since June 2021, this has been discontinued unless you are taking the test as part of school-day testing in a few states. Because of this, no school requires the SAT Essay or ACT Writing section, but some schools do recommend certain students submit their results if they have them.

Hunter College considers the SAT Essay/ACT Writing section optional and may not include it as part of their admissions consideration. You don't need to worry too much about Writing for this school, but other schools you're applying to may require it.

Final Admissions Verdict

Because this school is moderately selective, strong academic performance will almost guarantee you admission . Scoring a 1330 SAT or a 27 ACT or above will nearly guarantee you admission. Because the school admits 47.8% of all applicants, being far above average raises the admission rate for you to nearly 100%.

If you can achieve a high SAT/ACT score, the rest of your application essentially doesn't matter. You still need to meet the rest of the application requirements, and your GPA shouldn't be too far off from the school average of 3.7. But you won't need dazzling extracurriculars and breathtaking letters of recommendation to get in. You can get in based on the merits of your score alone.

But if your score is a 1150 SAT or a 21 ACT and below, you have a good chance of being one of the unlucky few to be rejected.

With Help From the Pulitzer Center, Stephanie Hanes Tells Stories of Hope

cuny hunter essay

On April 2, Hunter College students and faculty joined the journalist Stephanie Hanes at the Roosevelt House for a discussion on Hanes’ series The Climate Generation .

With the support of the Pulitzer Center and The Christian Science Monitor, Hanes and other reporters conceived of the series as a follow-up to an acclaimed 1980s package of stories called Children in Darkness, which focused on the hardships facing children around the world.

For that project, two reporters and a photojournalist traveled the world to tell the stories of children working in mines and factories, others consigned to prostitution and slavery. Children in Darkness was released in 1987, and two years later, the United Nations established the Convention on the Rights of the Child .

“This move was a breathtaking international recognition,” said Hanes. “Not just that this thing called childhood existed, but that young people themselves had inalienable rights.”

A few years ago, Hanes and fellow reporters thought of updating the Children in Darkness series. But, they realized that while those earlier stories helped to reveal the injustices children were facing, they wanted to help people imagine better futures as well. They wanted the new series to focus on hope.

Hanes said that although young people today were born with inalienable rights, they also were born at a time of unprecedented environmental change. This, she believed, was cause for optimism.

“We realized that climate change is transformative and because of it, young people are reshaping ideas from everything about how we live,” Hanes said.

Hanes and the other reporters then went to tell the story of what the new generation was doing in places that were the most affected by environmental change. Reporting the series took them to countries in Africa, Southeast Asia, Europe and the Caribbean, as well as parts of North America.

In Barbados, young people are finding ways to turn climate change into a business. One young man, Joshua Forte, began harvesting large amounts of sargassum seaweed and using it to make compost to help the island’s homegrown agricultural system.

In the Arctic, indigenous elders are teaching young people in their communities how to interact with the land in a way that honors traditional belief systems, which also, incidentally, helps to protect the environment.

After sharing the stories and research she and other reporters found through their work on the series, Hanes and Hunter’s Journalism Program Director Sissel McCarthy had a short discussion and Q&A with the audience.

Hanes explained that what made the series impactful was having good characters that connect with the audience, and stories that connect readers with human experience. She also highlighted the importance of writing stories that inspire readers to find hope and creative solutions.

Hanes noted that journalists often focus on the threats of climate change, rather than the solutions. “It does have doom and gloom in some places,” she said, “but it’s also a transition, and in this transition there’s an awful lot of hope.”

CUNY Gets $1M Donation to Boost FAFSA Completion Rates

cuny hunter essay

The City University of New York received a $1 million donation from the nonprofit Petrie Foundation to create a student aid completion program in response to the recent delays with the national rollout to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA program, according to a recent press release .

Students need to complete the FAFSA to receive financial aid, but there have been several significant delays and glitches since the form was updated to be more streamlined that have led to fewer students submitting it.  CUNY’s program would provide personalized assistance to current and prospective students through individual counseling and FAFSA completion events at CUNY campuses, libraries and high schools.

Hunter College has been quiet on the situation , leaving students unsure of their plans for the next academic year.

“The questions that FAFSA was asking don’t exactly make … sense. So I feel like I’ve made a lot of mistakes,” said Public Health Major Jacob Villorente about the new application.

cuny hunter essay

Villorente is one of the many Hunter students who rely on scholarships and loans to pay for school.

“If I don’t get FASFA on time, I am gonna be homeless,” said Villorente. “If I can’t pay for my school, then that has to come out of my paycheck, and I can’t afford rent.”

In response to the FAFSA delays, CUNY extended the deadline for new students to commit by one month to June 1. The university has also released the CUNY Net Price Calculator to make it easier for students to estimate what aid they qualify for and a webpage with guidance on the financial aid application process.

Villorente said the programs to help students complete the form would be really helpful but wants to see a policy from the school that would extend the tuition payment deadline for students who are waiting on FAFSA delays.

cuny hunter essay

Amid all the recent complications, one Hunter student, Michelle Mei, has been in Albany working on a bill proposed by Governor Kathy Hochul to increase FAFSA completion rates, as part of her internship with the NYPIRG Donald K. Ross Future Leaders Program.

The “Universal FAFSA Bill” or SB8148 would require every New York high school senior to complete the FAFSA and apply for the New York Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) or sign a waiver form. Similar legislation has led to increased rates of FAFSA completion in the states that have implemented it, and some research has revealed that students who complete the FAFSA are more likely to attend college.

“If people know about their financial options…they’re more likely to go to college,” said Mei.

The policy was rejected in the recent One-House Budget Resolution passed by the New York State Senate. But Mei said students can still support the Universal FAFSA Bill by calling their Assembly members to speak in favor of it. She also noted that they’re particularly interested in what their constituents are saying now since it’s their election year.

“You guys have a lot of voting power. You guys just don’t realize it,” said Mei. “Exercise your right to vote, because that’s important as well.”
