FREE Dr. Seuss Worksheets and Printables for Kids!

By: Author Leap of Faith Crafting

Home » FREE Printables

Instant download of 6 different Dr. Seuss worksheets for kids to do including a word search, crossword, and more fun activities!

The beloved Dr. Seuss… I have so many fond memories of reading Dr. Seuss books as a child and then reading them all to my own children.

My favorite Dr. Seuss book was Green Eggs and Ham and my kiddo’s favorite Dr Seuss books were Cat in the Hat, Lorax, and One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.

There are so many great Dr. Seuss books that it is really hard to pick just one favorite book! Our elementary school always had a Dr. Seuss’ birthday party for the kids and a ton of fun Dr. Seuss activities and free printables.

So in honor of Seuessville and Dr. Seuss’s genius that started with And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street , today I have 6 Dr. Seuss worksheets that will keep the kids or students engaged and learning at the same time!

Ways to Use Dr. Seuss Worksheets

You really can use these Dr. Seuss printables any time, but one of the best times is around Dr. Seuss’s birthday which is March 2nd aka Dr. Seuss Day and Read Across America Day!

If you are a teacher, homeschool Mom, or just a Dr. Seuss fan then having a Dr. Seuss party with a few easy DIY decorations would be a fun way to celebrate and make learning fun!

I made a ton of Dr. Seuss decorations for our Dr. Seuss theme bingo night at school. I love the whimsical look of Seussville themed decor and the library even kept the truffula trees and signs up on the bulletin boards year round.

Horton from Horton Hatches is my favorite character so of course I had to make a large cut out of him (and I did it with a cell phone and box projector !) The big elephant is so stinking cute!

Or you can find a bunch of Dr. Seuss decorations on Amazon or on Etsy here .

Have the party one day or spread it out over the Read Across America week or even a month while lesson plans can include reading a different Dr. Seuss book each day along with completing one Dr. Seuss activity sheet each day.

Amazon has a lot of great Dr. Seuss box sets if you are in need of some. This box set has some funny classics such as The Foot Book and There’s a Wocket in my Pocket.

Or leave the Dr. Seuss worksheets out during morning time for kindergarteners or elementary school aged students to work on as they like.

What’s Included in Dr. Seuss Printable Pack

Let’s take a quick look at the activity worksheets included in the PDF file of free Dr. Seuss printables. Any of these worksheets would pair nicely with our Oh The Places You’ll Go craft or another activity from our Dr. Seuss craft roundup .

First, there is a Who was Dr. Seuss informational worksheet about when and where Theodor Seuss Geisel was born.

If kids can read and write, they can read the short biography paragraph and then answer the questions by writing on the lines. If not, then a parent or teacher can read and help them!

dr seuss biography worksheet

Then there is a Dr. Seuss crossword puzzle all with the names of his most famous books.

dr seuss worksheets crossword

The next activity will keep the children busy by looking around the room finding items that start with each letter in Fox in Socks and Cat in the Hat. For an extra learning activity, you can then have them put the words in alphabetical order!

And instead of color by number coloring page, there is a color the rhyme printable. The kids will have a colored picture of the famous red and white hat at the end and helps with fine motor skills!

Students will learn about body parts when they label Thing One and then color him in. This worksheet would pair perfectly with our Thing 1 and Thing 2 craft project .

And lastly is a Dr. Seuss word search. This is probably better for older students but any age can try it (I’m sure there are first grade students that would love it!!

Id, Ego, and Superego in Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat

  • Related Resources

In this lesson, The Cat in the Hat is used as a primer to teach students how to analyze a literary work using the literary tools of plot, theme, characterization, and psychoanalytical criticism. In the first session, students use a plot handout to identify the elements of plot and theme for The Cat in the Hat . Session Two introduces psychoanalytic criticism as students classify the characters from the story, using the Id, Ego, and Superego. Students then develop an argument stating the psychological personality for each character. They gather evidence supporting their arguments by identifying examples of indirect characterization in the text. Finally, students refine their analysis and develop an analytical essay.

Featured Resources

An Introduction to Psychoanalytic Criticism : This handout explains Freud's structural model of personality and how it is used by literary analysis of character. Defining Characterization : This handout provides details about direct and indirect characterization, as well as a chart of the five different methods of indirect characterization for students to use in analyzing The Cat in the Hat. The Cat in the Hat Projects : This handout provides a list of essay topics for an analytical or evaluative essay of characters in The Cat in the Hat.

From Theory to Practice

As Diana Mitchell explains, "Any literary element can best be taught by beginning with children's books. The purpose, of course, in teaching about these elements is so students can use them as another way to get into the literature and talk about it" (94). Following that advice, this lesson taps Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat to explore complex characterization and analytical criticism. Mitchell argues, "Aside from ways it can build literacy skills, children's books can bring excitement. They are fun to use, and students will read them eagerly (94). As a result, The Cat in the Hat makes an excellent introduction to analytical processes that students can apply later to anything they read.

  • 1. Students read a wide range of print and nonprint texts to build an understanding of texts, of themselves, and of the cultures of the United States and the world; to acquire new information; to respond to the needs and demands of society and the workplace; and for personal fulfillment. Among these texts are fiction and nonfiction, classic and contemporary works.
  • 2. Students read a wide range of literature from many periods in many genres to build an understanding of the many dimensions (e.g., philosophical, ethical, aesthetic) of human experience.
  • 3. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics).
  • 4. Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.
  • 6. Students apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), media techniques, figurative language, and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and nonprint texts.
  • 12. Students use spoken, written, and visual language to accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the exchange of information).

Preparation

  • Arrange for students to see the illustrations in the book as it is being read aloud. Because the images figure in their analysis of the book, seeing the illustrations is vital. If possible, check out multiple copies of the text from your local public library and have small groups share the book as you read it. The books will come in handy as students analyze the text during later sessions as well.
  • Make appropriate copies of the handouts for the students.
  • If desired, make overheads of the handouts in order to model for the students.
  • Test the Venn Diagram and Plot Diagram tools on your computers to familiarize yourself with the tools and ensure that you have the Flash plug-in installed. You can download the plug-in from the technical support page.

Student Objectives

Students will

  • identify the literary elements of plot, theme, and character in a work.
  • use indirect characterization and psychoanalytic criticism to analyze a character in a work and explain how the character contributes to plot and theme.
  • structure an analytical essay based on their analysis.

Session One: Read Aloud and Identifying Plot and Theme

  • Begin the session by telling students that they will be listening to a familiar children's book, The Cat in the Hat . Elicit their memories and responses to the story.
  • Pass out copies of the book for students to refer to as you read.
  • Distribute the handout Plot Graphic Organizer to the students and ask students to listen closely to the story because after the story is read they will identify the elements of the story's plot. Alternately, students can complete the Plot Diagram tool.
  • Read The Cat in the Hat aloud. Be sure that students can see the illustrations as you share the story.
  • After reading the story, divide the class into small groups (each with a copy of the book to refer to as they work).
  • Ask groups to think about the elements of the story: setting, plot, character, and conflict.
  • Gather students as a class and invite discussion of the groups' findings.
  • After the students have discussed the story, ask them to complete the Plot Graphic Organizer or the Plot Diagram tool.
  • While the students are working, you can use The Plot of The Cat in the Hat handout as a reference.
  • When the students have completed their work, ask them to share their information in small groups. Monitor the conversations as an informal assessment to make sure that the students are on track.
  • Using photocopies, an overhead or an LCD projector, review with students the definition for theme and the five steps using The Literary Element of Theme handout.
  • After the students have worked with the concept of theme, ask them to identify the theme of The Cat in the Hat .
  • Ask students to share their responses in pairs or small groups. Monitor the conversations as an informal assessment to make sure that the students have an understanding of theme.

Session Two: Identifying the Id, Ego and Superego in a Literary Character

  • Invite students to share their definitions of plot and theme and how the elements relate to The Cat in the Hat .
  • When the discussions and sharing conclude, distribute the An Introduction to Psychoanalytic Criticism of Literature handout.
  • Ask the students to read the document. Provide time for them to ask any necessary questions about the content of the handout. Invite the students to mark-up the handout.
  • If desired, explain that the id and superego are like a devil and an angel, whispering into someone's ears telling the person what to do. The devil figure, representing the id, argues, "Think only about yourself!" and encourages the character to base decisions on the degree of self-satisfaction they will provide. On the opposite shoulder is an angel figure, representing the superego. This figure argues, "Think about society!" and encourages the character to base decisions on how well they satisfy society. In the center is the character, representing the ego, which must strike a balance between the id and superego.
  • Identify the presence of the id, ego, and superego in literary characters previously studied by the class. Some texts that can be used as examples are Hamlet, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, The Scarlet Letter, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Lord of the Flies, Wuthering Heights, or A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen.
  • Using their new knowledge of psychoanalytic criticism, ask students to identify what each of the main characters in  The Cat in the Hat represents in terms of the id, ego, and superego.
  • Distribute the The Cat in the Hat psychoanalysis chart .
  • Explain that this chart will provide preparation for an online activity for the following session.
  • Orally lead students through a discussion that helps them use the id, ego, and superego to determine each character's psychological personality.

Session Three: Visual Interpretation

  • Using the The Cat in the Hat psychoanalysis chart as a springboard, open discussion about the characters and the id, ego, and superego.
  • When discussion is complete, provide the students with the needed instructions for using the Venn Diagram student interactive or the Venn Diagram Graphic Organizer .
  • Label one circle of the Venn Diagram for each of the areas of personality (id, ego, and superego).
  • Remind students to use the The Cat in the Hat psychoanalysis chart for textual reference as they add notes to the student interactive. From there, the students will drag their notes to the appropriate place on the Venn diagram.
  • When the diagram is complete, remind students to print out the diagram.
  • The cat: Dominated by his id at the beginning but moves more to a balance between the superego and id at the end.
  • Fish: Dominated by his superego throughout the story.
  • Sally and the narrator: Fluctuate between the id and superego until the end when they allow the superego to take over.
  • Mother: Represents the superego through the moral and ethical restraints placed on us by caregivers.
  • Ask the students to compare their work in small groups, based on where items fall in their diagrams. For example, the Fish and the Mother are both found only in the superego area of the Venn Diagram. Are there similarities between these two characters? Differences?
  • Use the end of this session to answer any questions.

Session Four: Gather Support

  • Distribute the Defining Characterization handout.
  • Review definitions and Examples of Indirect Characterization , and answer any questions.
  • Encourage students to return to the book for a second look and consider both the text and the accompanying illustrations for evidence as they work.
  • Distribute the indirect characterization worksheets with the subtitle "The Cat."
  • As a class, identify and record the information needed to complete the handout. Sample responses to this part are included.
  • Ask students to repeat this activity for The Fish and the Narrator, using the remaining worksheets .
  • Conclude this session by answering any questions or concerns from the students. Or, ask them to examine characterization in some of the other texts read in class.

Session Five: Refine the Analysis

  • How do specific examples of characterization establish the psychological personality of the character?
  • How does the character's personality contribute to the main conflict and climax of the story's plot?
  • How does the character's personality contribute to the theme?
  • Explain how a character from The Cat in the Hat contributes to the plot and theme of the story.
  • Allow students time to work on the first part of the Refining Your Analysis handout. If desired, the students could work in pairs.
  • Once students have worked through the first part of the handout, introduce the The Cat in the Hat Projects (essay topics) to the students.
  • A rgument: A statement of the main point or argument.
  • S upport: Evidence that supports the main argument.
  • E xplanation: An explanation of the support and how it supports the argument.
  • Once students understand the "ASE" method, ask them to use their notes on the book to structure an argument about the role that one of the characters plays in the story.
  • Allow time at the end of the session for students to share any of their thoughts or insight into the process or the story.

Session Six to Eight: Analytical Essay Projects

  • Allow ample work time for the students, during and outside of class.
  • If desired, ask students to use the Revision Questions for Analytical Essays to review and strengthen their work before submitting their final drafts.
  • As a class, view the movie The Cat in the Hat . Analyze the movie and look for any similarities and differences between the representation of the id, ego, and superego in the characters of the movie and book. Refer to the Get The Reel Scoop lesson plan for ideas on comparing the two.
  • Invite the students to research the lives of Sigmund Freud and Dr. Seuss. They can document their findings using the Timeline Tool or the Graphic Map .
  • The students may also want to learn more about other Freudian terms and see if they can find examples in other pieces of literature.

Have students explore Freud's work using the Conflict, Freud & Culture online exhibit from the Library of Congress.

Students may be interested in seeing a more "grown-up" side of Dr. Seuss by perusing his political cartoons .

Student Assessment / Reflections

  • Assess students' knowledge of elements of plot, theme, and characterization by checking the worksheets and charts that they completed for the project. Look in particular for details from the text and illustrations that support students’ understanding.
  • Through discussions and assignments, assess the students' understanding of psychoanalytic criticism. Observe the way in which students analyze characters in a work, and then explain how the character contributes to the plot and theme.
  • Use the Venn Diagram student interactive or Venn Diagram reproducible as an assessment of the students' knowledge of the Id, Ego, and Superego.
  • Use the Revision Questions for Analytical Essays to guide feedback on students’ final essay.
  • Student Interactives
  • Professional Library

The Plot Diagram is an organizational tool focusing on a pyramid or triangular shape, which is used to map the events in a story. This mapping of plot structure allows readers and writers to visualize the key features of stories.

Kick off Read Across America Day this March by adding these free Dr. Seuss worksheets and other fun activities to your homeschool lesson plans.

What are your favorite Dr. Seuss books you’ve read? It’s hard to imagine childhood without them! From Cat in the Hat to Green Eggs and Ham to Sam I Am, most likely you’ve enjoyed a great book by Dr. Seuss with your own kids in your homeschool. My toddler is enamored with Wacky Wednesday currently (we read it countless times each day!).

Not only do kids love the creative drawings and whimsical stories, but Dr. Seuss books are a wonderful way to foster a love of reading and even begin building a solid literary foundation.

And really, they’re just plain fun.

Dr. Seuss’s birthday (celebrated on March 2nd) has become a big annual reading celebration, kicking off Read Across America Week. These free Dr. Seuss Worksheets are a great addition to your homeschool lesson plans this time of year!

Kick off Read Across America Day this March by adding these free Dr. Seuss worksheets and other fun activities to your homeschool lesson plans.

In fact, the entire month of March is National Reading Month, so it’s a great time to plan to be more intentional about reading with your kids and making learning fun and enjoyable for your entire family. Your favorite Dr. Seuss books are a great place to start!

Who Was Dr. Seuss?

Dr. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in 1904, and he loved writing children’s books. Probably the most popular is The Cat in the Hat , which was a result of him being asked to write a book that would help teach kids to read, using many basic vocabulary words.

I was surprised to learn that Dr. Seuss also wrote political cartoons for the Army during World War II, and many of his books were written to highlight political issues happening during his life (you can learn more about a few of those here ).

The rhymes and crazy characters are staples in Dr. Seuss’s masterpieces, and have helped many kids fall in love with reading over the years.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss Day

Why not plan a fun day to celebrate the life of Dr. Seuss with your kids, and kick off an entire month of reading celebration? Here are some fun ideas and educational activities to get you started:

Read a Dr. Seuss biography

Here are a few of my favorite options, with options for kids of all ages and reading levels: Who Was Dr. Seuss? , Dr. Seuss: The Great Doodler , or The Life of Dr. Seuss: A Biography of Theodor Seuss Geisel Just for Kids!

Visit your local library

Some libraries host a special storytime on this day, but if not, you can still head to yours to pick out a new favorite book to enjoy. You might even try finding some of the lesser-known Dr. Seuss books to read, such as The Sneetches and Other Stories or Yertle the Turtle .

Throw a party!

You can plan a party with just your kids, or invite some friends to celebrate Dr. Seuss day. Find some creative treat ideas here (I love the strawberry and banana kabobs – super easy!), dress up like your favorite Dr. Seuss characters, and read some classic Dr. Seuss books.

Dr. Seuss Math

A great way to incorporate some math is to help your kids take a poll of your friends’ and families’ favorite Dr. Seuss books, then create a graph of their results.

I’ve also got some free printables here that you can use to work on fractions with your kids on Dr. Seuss Day!

Do a Simple Dr. Seuss Craft

Pick out a great craft to go along with the books you read, and further encourage that love of reading for your kids. Here are a few fun Dr. Seuss craft ideas to choose from.

Watch a movie

There are many options to choose from if you want to rent a movie made from one of Dr. Seuss’s books! Try The Grinch (it’s ok to watch when it’s not Christmastime!), Horton Hears a Who , or The Lorax .

In addition to all of these ideas, I’ve got some free Dr. Seuss worksheets you can print off and add to the festivities.

Free Dr. Seuss Worksheets

These Dr. Seuss printable worksheets have something fun for all your kids. It includes a Dr. Seuss word search, crossword puzzle, write-around-the-room activity, and a color-by-rhyming sheet.

Educational Value

Simple vocabulary for beginning readers. Good introduction to poetry.

Positive Messages

Though not as clear-cut as Dr. Seuss' other stories, the overall message of this tale is about fun: It's very important to have, but it's also necessary to set limits. When you make a mess, clean up after yourself.

Positive Role Models

Despite his poor behavior, the Cat in the Hat is an enduring character. The true voice of reason in this story is the family's pet fish, who opposes the Cat's exuberant, reckless behavior. But the Cat ignores the fish's multiple requests for him to stop, even when the Cat's behavior puts the fish in danger. The brother and sister come to have a strong sense of responsibility about setting limits on the fun that the Cat insists on having. Despite all the chaos he's caused, the Cat is able to clean up the mess he made moments before the mother returns, and he disappears without a trace.

Diverse Representations

The two kids are White, the boy gets the active role, they talk about their mother with no mention of a father, and the nonhuman characters are male (though technically, Thing One and Thing Two aren't gendered).

Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Dr. Seuss ' The Cat in the Hat is a classic early reader book, originally published in 1957, about a walking, talking cat who visits two children on a rainy day while their mother is out. Young readers will mostly side with the reckless, fun-inspiring Cat and his sidekicks, Thing 1 and Thing 2, not the guilt-tripping goldfish who serves as the voice of reason. The book's colorful illustrations capture the Cat's exuberant spirit and match the rapid-fire rhyming text, which will encourage multiple readings.

Best horror book

What's the story.

Two children, Conrad and his sister Sally, are moping indoors on a rainy day when in strolls THE CAT IN THE HAT. Making one of the most unforgettable entrances in the history of children's literature, the lanky feline, stylishly dressed in a candy-striped stovepipe hat and oversized bow tie, creates a whirlwind of misbehavior that the kids are at first powerless to stop. He opens a box and releases Thing 1 and Thing 2, who cause even more trouble. But the goldfish is the voice of reason, and Conrad sends the Cat and his friends packing. The mess gets cleaned up before the kids' mom comes home.

Is It Any Good?

This is a must-read classic for every child. The Cat in the Hat was born in response to a pivotal Life magazine article titled "Why Johnny Can't Read." Children's author Theodor S. Geisel—aka Dr. Seuss —spent more than a year shuffling a minimal assortment of words, polishing and polishing, until he produced this wacky, offbeat story for very young readers.

The Cat wanders into the house, juggles objects, and invites his unusual pals to help him trash the place. But the children's grumpy goldfish, a self-appointed babysitter, is a perfect foil for the mischievous Cat. And after the boy finally asserts himself and orders the fun-loving feline to "pack up those Things" and hit the road, the Cat is the picture of remorse—even his whiskers and bow tie droop. The Cat in the Hat is a wonderful read-aloud and a rollicking good time for kids and grown-ups alike.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about Dr. Seuss' unique use of language in The Cat in the Hat. What's fun about a book that uses rhyming to tell the story?

How many sets of rhyming words can you find in the text? Do you notice any kind of pattern with rhyming pairs?

What would happen in real life after the Cat's irresponsible behavior?

What did you think about the Cat continuing his behavior even after the fish asked him to stop? How would you feel if someone was being mean to you and didn't stop when you asked them to?

Do you think the children will be honest with their mother about what actually happened in the house that day? Why, or why not?

Key Facts & Information

Personal and early life.

  • Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. He was the son of Theodor Robert Geisel and Henrietta Seuss Geisel.
  • In 1921, he attended the Dartmouth College. He became the editor-in-chief of the Jack-O-Lantern humor magazine. After being kicked off because of a violation, he started using pen names to continue his contributions.
  • He was caught drinking alcohol during the Prohibition Era.
  • Four years later, he moved to England and attended Oxford University. He then met his future wife Helen Palmer. Wanting a change, he went back to the United States and started a full time job as a cartoonist. In 1927, he published his first cartoon in the Saturday Evening Post.
  • By December 21, 1937, “And To Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street” was finished and published by the Vanguard Press after 20 rejections from various publishers. He was known for his rhythmic and lyrical style of writing. After a year he published ‘The 50 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins’, ‘The King’s Stilts’, and ‘The Seven Lady of Godivas’ in 1939.
  • During WWII, at the age of 38, Theodor joined the US army. He worked for the director of the Signal Corps unit, Frank Capra, for three years. Rhythmic script such as the Private Snafu was his main contribution which educated the new recruits in obeying orders and norms.

ACCOMPLISHMENT AND LEGACY

  • By 1957, Geisel wrote ‘The Cat in the Hat’ written using only 236 words – a firm favourite with many first graders. It became his breakout masterpiece with 400,000 copies sold and later on translated to several languages including braille. Green Eggs and Ham followed with only 50 words used.
  • During his lifetime Geisel used several pen names such as Theo LeSieg, Theophrastus Seuss, Rosetta Stone, and Dr. Seuss. He received several awards including The Honorary Doctoral a Degree from Dartmouth, The Pulitzer Prize, two Academy and Emmy Awards, The Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, and The Peabody Award.
  • In 2004, the US Children’s Librarians established the Theodor Seuss Geisel Awards recognizing American books for beginner readers. In total, he published over 50 children’s books with political and moral themes and sold more than 600 million copies by the time of his death in 1991.
  • Some of his famous works are ‘The Lorax’, ‘Yertle The Turtle’, ‘The Sneetches’, ‘Horton Hears a Who’, and ‘The Butter Battle Book’.
