IELTS Model Essay: Self Employment

Self Employed v Employed

This week’s IELTS model essay is one of my favourite tasks! It’s on the topic of self employment:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

Cambridge IELTS Academic 14 Test 4

In effect, this is an ‘advantages – disadvantages’ essay in disguise! The first question ‘why might be the case’ is really asking you for the advantages of self-employment. People choose to be self-employed because there are advantages.

So I think the question could be worded like this:

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organisation. What could be the advantages and disadvantages of being self-employed?

If you find it difficult to generate ideas for this task , you can simply search online for “advantages and disadvantages of self employment”. You will get lots of ideas! Here are some interesting articles:

  • https://freelancinghacks.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-being-self-employed/

It’s probably a good idea to include some comparisons between self-employment and working for a company, because the topic isn’t only about self-employment: it includes the phrase “ rather than to work for a company or organisation” . So some comparative language is useful, and will increase your range of vocabulary too.

Reasons why (advantages)

Potentially higher earnings

  • may only get a small annual pay increase
  • self-employment: working harder can mean big financial rewards
  • don’t have to do what your boss tells you to do
  • e.g. make your own decisions
  • more flexibility with working hours / work

Disadvantages

Greater risk

  • no guaranteed income in self employment
  • employed people get regular pay
  • problem if you have mortgage
  • difficult to take holidays, may have to work weekends / evenings
  • working for someone else usually has fixed hours, finish by 5pm

This essay is quite long, so I decided to split my essay into four body paragraphs . This will make it easier for my reader to see the structure of my essay.

There seems to be a growing trend of people around the world choosing to be self-employed rather than to work for a company. This essay will consider the reasons for this as well as the drawbacks of working for yourself.

One of the main attractions of self-employment is the opportunity for higher earnings than you might receive when working for a company. In the latter, salaries are determined by your boss and increases are often limited, regardless of how hard you work. If you work hard as a self-employed person, the financial rewards are potentially unlimited, especially with online businesses. For example, using social media advertising can allow a solopreneur to rapidly increase sales.

But money is, for many people, not the main incentive of working for oneself. Instead, it’s the sense of autonomy you receive. You no longer have to do what your line manager tells you to do; instead, you can make your own decisions. This allows you to enjoy greater flexibility over things like working hours and the kind of work you do.

However, there are drawbacks to self employment. Firstly, there might be considerable financial risk. There is no guarantee of income, unlike those who receive regular pay cheques from their boss, and it’s not unusual to see new small businesses fail due to a lack of money. This is quite daunting for people who have regular expenses such as a mortgage, and so many people prefer the safety afforded to them by working for someone else.

Additionally, working for yourself will usually entail working long hours, sometimes at weekends and in the evening, leaving little time for the kind of recreation time enjoyed by workers who simply stop work at around 5pm. Furthermore, it may be difficult to take holidays if you work for yourself, so the work-life balance for self-employed people can be a problem.

In short, self-employment isn’t for everyone. There are clear drawbacks related to money and time, but for many people, the attraction of greater success and satisfaction is worth the risk.

Today, an increasing number of individuals choose to work for themselves, rather than working for corporate industries or MNCs. I believe that individuals choose to start their own business because of the corporate world’s little work/life balance or the imposition of rules and regulations. Although there are several perks of being self-employed, a few things about self-employment can cause a lot of stress to an individual.

The primary reason that encourages the youth to opt for self-employment is the freedom that comes with it. If a person is self-employed, he has the liberty to choose his working hours and plan his schedule. Further, a self-employed business can earn a hefty sum of money for an individual, securing the future. But people (employees) doing a corporate job receive only the given salary, which makes it difficult to balance their work and life. Initially, these employees are required to work for eight hours a day, but when the competition increases gradually and becomes fierce, they’ve to work hard and for longer hours to stay ahead of the company’s competitors. Further, if an employee doesn’t perform well or if the employer feels that the employee isn’t worthy enough, they can be expelled from the company. Moreover, the employee is bound by the rules and regulations laid down by the company or the employer. Not everyone appreciates being bound by the rules.

However, being one’s own boss can be exhausting and stressful. A self-employed individual should be disciplined enough not to skip deadlines. By missing out on important targets and deadlines, the individual may undergo financial losses, and he must solely bear all the consequences, as a result of which the guaranteed paycheck at the end of the month is lost. Moreover, it takes several years for self-employed professionals to establish themselves in their respective fields. Therefore, there’s no guarantee that a self-employed individual will earn enough to live a comfortable life until then. Thus, there’ll be a huge difference in their daily routine, adversely affecting their mental and physical health.

To recapitulate, I think working for oneself is definitely beneficial as it enables them to work on flexible schedules with their own terms and conditions. But eventually, they may fail if they don’t meet set targets. Therefore, an individual should be aware of the pros and cons of self-employment before venturing into one.

Band 9 Sample Essay

There is a significant splurge in the number of youngsters choosing the path of business rather than being restricted into the shackles of a cubicle and working 9-6 for a company. On top of that, an extensive range of putative and victorious businessmen are supporting these young entrepreneurs and helping them financially by funding their ideas. I believe that this concept comes with both merits and demerits and that one should be cautious when making this decision.

It is effortlessly evident that there are many reasons behind this rising trend of startup companies. To commence with, youngsters are finding it arduous to get a job as per their liking and preference. Individuals who wish to work in an acclaimed organisation or get a well-paid job must have high academic qualifications or years of work experience. Such requirements are somehow disqualifying a larger section of the job hunters. And then, there are people who desire to get riches in a shorter time period. To exemplify, a business can earn a hefty sum of amount if the idea is unique and targeted to the right type of consumer.

If looked at it from the different perspective, there are varying drawbacks as well. First and foremost, being self-employed doesn’t come with a guaranteed comfortable and luxurious life. When working in a company, there is a guaranteed amount that gets credited to the bank account at the end of the month. Another significant disadvantage that cannot be overlooked is that self-employed people, to make their companies successful, work throughout and the day and sometimes late in the night as well. This practice not just keeps them away from their friends and family but impacts their overall health as well. Hence, it creates an imbalance in their professional and personal lives.

To recapitulate, working independently is surely advantageous for youngsters as it allows them to work on their own terms and conditions. However, there are obvious disadvantages as well that must be considered before entrepreneurship is chosen.

Meaning: something extra you get, in addition to a salary, in exchange for working. Eg: One of the perks of being a programmer is that you get access to the 24×7 seamless WiFi.

Meaning: freedom Eg: In the absence of the teacher, the students got the liberty to peep outside the classroom.

  • Corporate job

Meaning: a job where an individual is working in a corporate organisation or a large company. Eg : Rose turned down her corporate job offer to only start a clothing store in the market.

Meaning: having or displaying an intense or ferocious aggressiveness. Eg : Mary’s father was fiercely attacked by the tiger in the forest.

Meaning: force (someone) to leave a place Eg : Due to his bad attitude, the security guard was expelled from the company.

Meaning: having a moral or legal duty to do something. Eg: Children were bound to follow the rules and regulations in the school.

  • Being one’s own boss

Meaning: have full control of a business or enterprise Eg: Jack’s friends were jealous of him as he became his own boss.

  • Recapitulate

Meaning: summarize and state again the main points of. Eg: Rose was asked to recapitulate the presentation.

Meaning: very tired Eg: John was exhausted after a journey of 8 hours.

Meaning: undertake a risky or daring journey or course of action. Eg: Joshua decided to venture in the dark.

In this modern world, an increasing number of people choose to be their own boss and, work individually. I assume this trend has risen due to the perspective they have about working in a company or a firm, or maybe idealizing the concept self-employing. The point is, we should be aware of both down and up sides of it. For this purpose, I am going to discuss in the further paragraphs. Firstly, being self-employed can be an appropriate choice for introverted people who cannot communicate with large groups and prefer to be isolated in a room while listening to a music. For instance, a friend of mine, couldn’t fit in the company she worked in and felt irritated while surrounded by so many colleagues. In addition to this, being you own boss means your schedule depends on you, and you have the opportunity to utilize all your time and energy the way you enjoy. Moving on to the negative aspects, the most important disadvantage is your balance in life may get ruined. You have no boundaries between the quality time with your family and other occupational meetings. Furthermore, you can be sure on your income, because the company is compelled to give you the salary at the end of each month but in this case, it is all up to you and, you may have no earnings in a month and no one is responsible for this but you. In conclusion, self-employment has pros and cons and, it can be an authentic choice for some. Yet, we have to be cautious about its drawbacks if we want to opt for this type of working.

Recently, while numerous people have had to fight so hard to achieve a great platform as a job, others pursue being self-employed to take control of their work schedules or have a higher income. However, financial risk and burnout are two significant drawbacks of entrepreneurship. To commence with, freedom and flexibility in working schedules might be the factor of this phenomenon. Due to the desire for greater control and adaptation of work hours to personal needs and balance work-life commitments. To illustrate, a freelancer can take care of his business in the morning and do other jobs in the afternoon than those employees who have to blind their lives with the work schedules because of the long working hours. Furthermore, by being self-employed, you have the possibility of higher earnings, especially if a venture becomes successful. However, being one’s own boss can be risky and exhausting. Firstly, irregular income patterns and personal financial risk, as business success or failure, directly influence the individual’s income and economic well-being. Moreover, burnout will appear daily, resulting from prolonged work stress and long work hours to build and maintain their business, especially when the business finances witness a terrible change. For example, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and Space X, had to spend 100 hours a week to operate his own business. In conclusion, the choice of self-employed offers various advantages like flexible schedules and more opportunities for a higher income. Still, it comes with potential financial risk and an overload in responsibility and working hours. Individuals considering self-employed should carefully weigh these factors to make informed decisions.

In recent times, many individuals preferred their own businesses as compared to working for private companies or corporations. To my opinion, people opt for self businesses so as to earn a good amount of money with comparatively a flexible schedule with their own terms and conditions rather than being paid a fixed salary every month. To begin with, the main reason which allured people to start up and engage in their own businesses is the probability of making quite good financial gains. Individuals workings with companies are generally paid a fixed remuneration every month with little or no increments. The decision regarding salary increments totally lies with the company or organization. The other reason for establishing self businesses includes flexible schedules and working hours. People can work as per their availability without any force from anyone as they are not answerable to any higher authorities as in private salaried jobs. Overall people feel more happy and satisfied if they are their own boss and working style. Their could be certain disadvantages also for being self employed sometimes. Firts of all, being self employed is a risky job. All the losses has to bear by the individual himself or between the partners of the business. People may have huge financial losses if not working with the guidelines or not keeping themselves updated as per market trends. It become necessary for the individuals to become pefect all the time to prevent or avoid any mistakes. It sometimes may become stressful to handle the entire company single handed. To recapitulate, working for their own business may be financially good for a person but it comes with many responsibilities and accountabilities. If not met with guidelines may results into huge losses which could be the biggest disadvantges of self employment.

The traditional culture of boss-worker is of less demand among present generation. Many individuals tend to be self-employed instead of working under another person. The freedom to make decisions and no strict rules at the work place makes individuals stand-alone. Though there are benefits, being self-employed has drawbacks as well. While being self-employed, people are free to make their own decisions and need not wait for another person’s approval in accomplishing their tasks. One clear example is, when they wish to have an off from the work or wants to go for a trip, they could simply take leave without getting any consent from anywhere. Furthermore, they prefer to have working conditions where no strict rules are imposed, for example, a dress code or a systematic working time, on them. A more flexible schedule is ensured by being self-employed. However, they are likely to get no employee benefits such as holiday pay and sick pay which are some of the benefits obtained by people while working for a company or an organization.. Also, they may face issues like increased responsibility and pressure as this individual is the prime authority for the whole running of the working system. They can’t rely on anyone else in case of a trouble or loss and makes them the sole bearer in every situation they face. In conclusion, while there are many plus points in being self-employed, these people tend to working much harder than they ever did for an employer, which makes them vulnerable to overwork and it’s consequence burnout.

250 Words Essay on Self Employment

Introduction to self employment.

Self-employment, often portrayed as the epitome of personal freedom and financial independence, is an increasingly popular choice among individuals. It is a lifestyle that allows individuals to create their own work environment, set their own hours, and determine their own income based on the effort they put in.

The Appeal of Self-Employment

The allure of self-employment lies in its potential for personal and financial freedom. It offers an escape from the 9-to-5 grind, enabling individuals to pursue their passions and interests. Moreover, it provides the opportunity to directly reap the benefits of one’s hard work, rather than having the fruits of labor divided among various stakeholders in a traditional employment setting.

Challenges of Self-Employment

Despite its appeal, self-employment isn’t without its challenges. It requires a high level of self-discipline, resilience, and financial management skills. The lack of a guaranteed income can lead to financial instability, especially in the early stages. Moreover, self-employed individuals often have to wear many hats, dealing with marketing, finance, and operations, all while delivering their core services.

Conclusion: The Future of Self-Employment

The rise of the gig economy and digital platforms has made self-employment more accessible than ever. However, it is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Individuals must carefully consider their skills, risk tolerance, and personal goals before venturing into self-employment. Despite its challenges, for those who value autonomy and are willing to navigate through uncertainty, self-employment can be a rewarding career choice.

500 Words Essay on Self Employment

Self-employment, a concept that has been around for centuries, is becoming increasingly popular in today’s fast-paced world. It is the practice of creating one’s own job, rather than working for an employer. Self-employment can take on many forms, from freelancing and consulting to building a startup. It is a path that requires ambition, resilience, and a great deal of independence.

The Rise of Self-Employment

The landscape of work is changing, and self-employment is at the forefront of this transformation. Technological advancements, particularly the internet, have made it easier to start and run a business. Digital platforms have created a new economy where people can offer their skills directly to consumers or businesses, bypassing traditional employment structures. This shift is not just about convenience; it also reflects a changing attitude towards work. More people are seeking autonomy, flexibility, and the ability to pursue their passions.

The Pros and Cons of Self-Employment

Self-employment offers numerous benefits. It provides freedom to choose the type of work, the clients, and the working hours. It can lead to a more balanced lifestyle and potentially higher income. Moreover, it offers the satisfaction of creating something on your own and seeing it grow.

However, self-employment also comes with challenges. It often means longer hours, especially during the initial phases. There is no guaranteed income, and financial instability can be stressful. Self-employed individuals must also handle all aspects of their business, from marketing to accounting, which can be overwhelming.

Skills for Successful Self-Employment

Successful self-employment requires a unique set of skills. Entrepreneurial skills such as creativity, risk-taking, and strategic thinking are crucial. Equally important are technical skills related to the specific job or industry. For instance, a freelance graphic designer needs to be proficient in design software.

Additionally, self-employed individuals must be adept at time management and self-discipline. They need to be resilient, able to handle setbacks and failures. Furthermore, they must be continuous learners, adapting to new trends and technologies to stay competitive.

In conclusion, self-employment is a viable and increasingly popular career path. It offers numerous benefits, including autonomy, flexibility, and the potential for higher income. However, it also comes with challenges, such as financial instability and the need to manage all aspects of the business. To succeed in self-employment, individuals must possess entrepreneurial skills, technical skills, and a resilient mindset. As the world of work continues to evolve, self-employment will likely play a significant role in shaping the future of our economy.

What Is Self-Employment?

  • Understanding It

Special Considerations

  • Pros and Cons

The Bottom Line

essay for self employed

Self-employment is earning income without being employed and paid by someone else. Self-employed persons may be involved in a variety of occupations but generally are highly skilled at a particular kind of work. Writers, tradespeople, freelancers , traders/investors, lawyers, salespeople, and insurance agents all may be self-employed. Self-employment isn't like being a traditional worker because self-employed individuals aren't tied to an employer. Being self-employed gives people flexibility but comes with certain tax implications.

Key Takeaways

  • Self-employment allows people to work for themselves without being tied to an employer.
  • Self-employed individuals are generally required to pay estimated taxes each quarter.
  • Being self-employed can provide flexibility and autonomy, but there is a greater degree of employment risk and a cyclic or varying income.

Understanding Self-Employment

The precise definition of self-employment depends on who you ask, as it varies among different agencies, including the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) , the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) , and private research firms. However, the overarching definition of the term is the state of earning a living from any independent pursuit of economic activity instead of earning a living working for a company or entity.

A self-employed person is anyone who performs work for pay, independent contractors, sole proprietors of businesses, and individuals engaged in partnerships . A freelancer or an independent contractor who performs all of their work for a single client may still be a self-employed person.

Being self-employed is often confused with owning a business, but the two concepts aren't necessarily the same. A self-employed person is usually the business itself, whereas a business owner may own the company but not be involved in operating or managing it.

A self-employed person must file annual taxes and pay an estimated quarterly tax . They are also required to pay what is called the self-employment tax in addition to income tax. This tax equals 15.3% of their earnings. Of this tax, 12.4% goes to Social Security on the first $168,600 in 2024, and 2.9% goes to Medicare tax.

Those who make less than an annual net profit of $400 are exempt from paying taxes on that income.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Self-Employment

There are benefits and drawbacks of working as a self-employed individual. We've highlighted some of the key pros and cons below.

While self-employment generally requires much more work and attention, many benefits are attractive:

You are the boss

  • You have the luxury of deciding what projects you work on
  • You work the hours you want, which gives you the freedom to take time off and work whenever you want
  • You can specialize in work you enjoy rather than working for pay doing something you may not like

Disadvantages

One of the most significant disadvantages of self-employment is that there is no entity withholding and paying your estimated taxes or withholding —you're required to pay estimated federal taxes quarterly. Some other disadvantages are:

  • There are no paid days off or paid vacation time, so a day off is a day without pay
  • You are responsible for your own health insurance and retirement benefits
  • You must ensure you remain profitable and busy, finding work for yourself
  • You must ensure you abide by the tax laws, filing requirements, and any applicable fees in your state and county

Ability to choose projects

Flexibility in your schedule

Do what you enjoy

No paid days off

No benefits

Work may come and go

You are liable for your own taxes

Types of Self-Employment

Independent contractors  are businesses or individuals hired to do specific jobs. They receive payment only for the jobs that they do. Because they are not considered employees, they do not receive benefits or workers’ compensation , their clients do not withhold taxes from their payments for work performed, and equal opportunity laws do not apply to them.

Examples of independent contractors include doctors, journalists, freelance workers, lawyers, actors, and accountants who are in business for themselves. It is worth noting that independent contractors are not just limited to specialized fields and can include various jobs.

Sole proprietors are the only owners of unincorporated businesses, while partnerships involve two or more self-employed people who form a business together. Independent contractors, sole proprietors, and partnerships often hire a few employees to help them with their work.

10.11 million

The number of self-employed and unincorporated individuals in the U.S. as of March 2024.

It is estimated that freelancers, particularly in what is known as the gig economy , will continue to grow. There were approximately 67.6 million freelancers in 2021, which is expected to grow to 86.5 million by 2027. It is expected that 50.9% of the workforce will be freelancers by 2027.

What Are the Main Types of Self-Employment?

The main types of self-employment types are independent contractor, which is an individual working a specific job; a sole proprietorship, which is a business enterprise run by an individual and which may or may not have additional employees; and a partnership, which is a business structure between two or more individuals with ownership status.

How Do You Show Proof of Income If You Are Self-Employed?

Proof of income may be required in various instances, such as filing taxes, obtaining a mortgage or other loan, or purchasing health insurance. Ways to show proof of income if you are self-employed include tax returns, Form 1099, bank statements (both personal and of the business account), audited profit and loss statements, and official invoices.

What Are the Benefits of Being Self-Employed?

The benefits of being self-employed include being your own boss, creating your own schedule, flexibility, working towards your dreams, enjoying the challenges of starting something from scratch, choosing the people you work with, and creating your own work environment.

A self-employed person isn't tied to a specific employer. They more or less decide when they'll work and when they won't. As such, a self-employed person is their own boss, which comes with certain tax liabilities. This includes paying the employee and employer portions of Social Security and Medicare taxes as well as periodic income tax payments. They must also foot the bill for supplies, equipment, and office space. Although it may sound tempting, it's important to consider the benefits and disadvantages carefully if you're considering going out independently as a self-employed person.

IELTS Writing task 2 requires test takers to write an essay of 250 words. The question is a statement based on the point of view, argument, or problem. Candidates must present their opinion and solution, back them with factual information, and evaluate ideas and evidence. This blog will present a sample IELTS essay on Nowadays Many People Choose to be Self-employed'.

Table of Contents

Why do you think many people choose to be self-employed nowadays: ielts sample essay 1, do you think being self-employed nowadays is a challenge: ielts essay sample 2, explore more resources related to ielts essays:.

With the cut-throat competition that has plagued the current job market, finding a suitable job has become quite challenging. Even if a person finds a job, there is no certainty, as every year, we hear how organizations sack their employees overnight because of poor performance. In addition, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit the nation, the economy was in shambles, and thousands of people lost their jobs as the companies started facing losses.

The unsure job scenario in India has prompted individuals to establish their own startups or business rather than working for any other organization. This decision also stems from the freedom that comes along with being self-employed. They get to be their own boss, plan their working hours and schedule according to their convenience, and there is no higher authority to dominate.

However, though it might look easy, it is exhausting and stressful to be one's own boss. Being self-employed means that a person's business is like their child, and they cannot afford to disappoint the clients by missing deadlines. When the business undergoes financial losses, the entrepreneur only has to bear all the costs, which is not the case when working in a corporate. Moreover, when a person chooses to be self-employed, they can hardly take time for themselves, and even after years of hard work, there is no guarantee that they will succeed.

In conclusion, many people choose entrepreneurship or freelancing to maintain a work-life balance, but it is not an easy path and comes with a lot of stress.

Nowadays, many people are switching from working for a company to starting their own business. This is mainly because of their wish to work at flexible hours and be their own boss. While being an entrepreneur assures unlimited freedom, it is not as easy as it might look. People with businesses have to face many challenges, and no fixed income or a paycheck is coming at the end of the month. Self-employed people have to bear the brunt of losses and reap the benefits when the business makes profits.

The COVID-19 pandemic witnessed the highest unemployment rate in the last 50 years. The unemployment rate in the urban areas rose to 20.9% during the April-June quarter of 2020, which was more than double the previous year's unemployment rate of 8.9%. Many companies shut down due to the nationwide pandemic, and some laid-off employees to cut costs. This instilled fear in job seekers' minds, making them switch to being self-employed.

With digitalization, launching a business has become much easier. Thanks to the internet, entrepreneurs do not require huge capital to start their businesses. However, it might take time to establish the startup, and a person's income might even be lower than their previous salary. Competing with already established brands is not easy. Therefore, you might have to work for even 16 to 18 hours along with a great deal of discipline to succeed.

To summarise, young people choose to be self-employed, lured by the freedom to work on their terms. However, behind every successful business, an entrepreneur has to devote unlimited hours of hard work, and that too without any stable income.

Essay 278 – Some people think that it is better to be self-employed

Gt writing task 2 / essay sample # 278.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people think that it is better to be self-employed. Others say that it is better to work for a company or organisation.

Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

Model Answer:

Opinions are split as to whether self-employment or a salaried job is better. This essay will centre on both perspectives, but I believe that self-employment is a far better choice than doing a job

On the one hand, there are many cogent reasons why self-employment seems better than a paid job in a company. First and foremost, self-employed individuals can enjoy considerable independence. As self-employed persons, they decide what they do, how they do something, and when they do it. Although it sometimes proves to be difficult, and discipline needs to be maintained- but they have the option. Not only does self-employment offer freedom, but also it helps to maintain a better work-life balance. Second, self-employed persons’ income potential is higher than those who are traditionally employed. For instance, one study reveals that freelancers in the UK earn three times more than their counterparts. Last but not least, self-employed individuals can utilize their full potential.

On the other hand, a salaried job also confers several benefits. One of the primary advantages of working for an organization or company is greater job security. When commencing a job, employees sign a contract paper with their employer which provides an outline of their employment conditions as well as duties, responsibility, and rights. Apart from that, being employed by someone else means an employee gets certain benefits such as paid sick leave, paid annual leave, and a pension scheme. This provides employees with an extra level of protection in life. Finally, regular income is another obvious advantage. This means that employees get a consistent salary, regardless of profit or loss of the company, thus it makes their financial planning much easier.

To conclude, being self-employed means you are your own boss, and you can plan the business or tasks the way you feel fit. It gives the liberty to design everything the way you love it, and this is why it is a better choice than working 9 to 5 in a company.

IELTS Essay on Employment

IELTS Essay on Employment

There are many IELTS writing topics but one of the common ones is employment . This means anything relating to the idea of working. (Of course, it could also be the opposite: unemployment .) In any case, today I will explain how to write an IELTS essay on employment.

We are going to look at two examples of IELTS writing task 2 questions about employment and then I will show you my two sample answers.

IELTS Writing Questions about Employment

The topic of employment could arise almost anywhere in the IELTS exam but it is quite common in task 2 of the writing test. In fact, the scope for what sort of question you could be asked is immense! You could be asked about employment and:

  • Environment
  • and much more

In short, you cannot really prepare for this by guessing the questions or having any expectation of a particular topic. Just know that you might have to write an essay about employment and that you will need to read it carefully.

IELTS Essay #1: Self-Employment vs Traditional Employment

First of all, let’s look at an IELTS writing question about self-employment.

Nowadays many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization. Why might this be the case? What could be the disadvantages of being self-employed?

ielts essay on employment

This is a two-part question , which means you should aim to answer both questions in the body of your essay. In a sense, this makes it much easier to understand the question and structure your answer.

However, let’s make sure that we understand it perfectly.

Question analysis

Premise: In the modern era, many people work for themselves. This is different from the past, when they worked for companies.

We have to write about two things:

  • Why this has happened.
  • What are the disadvantages.

In a sense, this is a rare instance where the two-part question and the advantages-and-disadvantages question come together! You can see how #1 is sort of asking for the advantages, and #2 specifically asks for disadvantages.

How interesting!

Common Problems

I have often seen my writing correction students make the mistake of confusing freelancing, self-employment, and working from home. There can obviously be some overlap between these but there are also important distinctions:

To answer this question, I would take a pretty simple, four-paragraph structure for my approach. It would look like this:

Sample Band 9 Answer

It is quite common nowadays for people to be self-employed, rather than working for a company or organization. This essay will look into the reasons for that change, and then discuss some of the disadvantages of being self-employed.

In the information era, it is quite possible for people to work at home on their computer. The internet has opened up all sorts of possibilities in terms of making money, and so people may work as freelancers or start their own company. It has never been easier to do this because in the past working for yourself required renting an office or shop, whereas now you can simply set up a website or social media profile. People typically prefer this because it allows them a great deal of freedom. A person who prefers nights and loathes waking up early might choose to conduct their business at night, whereas someone who likes to travel might work from a laptop while visiting different places.

Of course, there are some disadvantages to being unemployed. This sort of employment lacks the security of a traditional job. In most countries, workers are protected by laws that guarantee them certain rights. However, with no employer and no workplace, these laws do not apply. Similarly, traditional jobs provide pension plans and health insurance, but when you work for yourself you have to provide these yourself, and they are not cheap. In fact, most self-employed people simply forego these things and take the risk as a part of their comparatively free life.

In conclusion, being self-employed allows people a far greater degree of freedom in their life, but there are several significant drawbacks that mean this sort of work is not suitable for everyone.

Note: This essay originally appeared here .

IELTS Essay #2: Job Satisfaction

Next, we will look at an IELTS essay on employment that deals specifically with the interesting issue of job satisfaction:

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing. What factors contribute to job satisfaction? How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

This is another two-part question. What a coincidence!

Question Analysis

In order to understand this question, we can again look closely at its premise:

Premise: Job satisfaction is important for a person’s wellbeing.

You have to write about:

  • The factors that make people satisfied with their work
  • Whether or not it is realistic for everyone to achieve job satisfaction

You should aim to write about all of this without straying off topic.

A lot of people seem to misunderstand or overlook the second question, which asks whether it is realistic for everyone to have job satisfaction . This can be a difficult thing to discuss with any depth, but you need to address it as best you can.

Here is how I will plan my IELTS essay about job satisfaction:

Although some people think that a high salary is the most important part of a job, the truth is that job satisfaction is probably more important. This essay will look at some of the factors contributing to this, and then argue that it is a reasonable expectation to have some degree of job satisfaction.

Every person is different and so defining job satisfaction is not an easy task. However, it could be stated that in order to provide this to employees, employers must give them a good justification for doing their job. The reason for this is that having a sense of satisfaction with one’s job largely comes from feeling a sense of purpose. People who feel that their efforts are useless or unappreciated invariably feel no job satisfaction. In addition to this, it is important that a person is given some degree of responsibility and autonomy with their tasks. Having a supervisor monitoring every single action presents a lack of trust and creates an atmosphere of oppression. When these two factors are met, they can result in workers who feel satisfied with their positions.

It may seem unlikely that people can achieve this because ever since the industrial revolution, it has been normal for people to work long hours in order to make money to survive, with little thought given to making workers happy or comfortable. However, in the modern world there is no good reason why this cannot be a new target. Employers should strive to give their employees dignity in the workplace, instead of maximizing productivity. Whether this is likely or not depends on social expectations and workplace laws, but it is certainly possible if the effort were made.

In conclusion, job satisfaction occurs when people are given tasks that matter and then offered some degree of responsibility. This could be given to everyone with the right motivation, although it is also possible that it may not happen.

Ok folks, I hope that was helpful for you. Now you can go and write your own IELTS essay on employment. Remember that there are many possible questions and so you should not assume that these two will appear in your next test. Also note that the topic of employment could appear in task 1 as a line graph of employment rates or any other sort of visual representation of employment and unemployment.

Essay of the Week: Should you work for yourself or a company?

Our band nine sample essays give you the opportunity to learn from successful essays that show off the best structure, vocabulary and grammar. This essay is asks for your opinion about if it would be better to work for yourself or someone else.

Band Nine Sample Essay

Many people believe it is better to be self-employed than work for a company. to what extent do you agree or disagree.

Some people believe it is better to vacation in another country while others believe it is best to stay in one’s home country. Compare both sides and give your point of view.

As the tourism sector has grown in importance in the modern world, whether people should travel abroad on holiday has also gained in importance. In this essay I will, first, look at the cultural understanding that can be gained from traveling abroad, and then second, explore the environmental harm this can cause. I will conclude that it is better to avoid foreign travel.

First, travelling to other countries can be a culturally enriching experience. When travelling abroad, they can discover new styles of music, art and food. If people have this type of experience, it can teach them to learn more about the world and appreciate their own and other cultures, something that can enrich their lives long term. For example, if someone travels to Japan, they might gain a deeper understanding of areas of Japanese culture, such as sumo, sushi and communal eating.

However, although there are many advantages to international travel, there is also a significant environmental cost. When people travel abroad, their flights cause carbon dioxide to be ejected in the high atmosphere, contributing to global warming. Furthermore, the infrastructure for these tourists, such as building new hotels, roads and restaurants, can have a detrimental impact on the local environment. Ironically, such developments can often lead to the destruction of the local environment that initially lead people to want to visit.

To conclude, while I appreciate the cultural benefits of international travel, I believe that the environmental costs are too high. As a result, in my view it is better to take a stay-cation than travel abroad.

Essays About Work: 7 Examples and 8 Prompts

Whether employed or self-employed, we all need to work to earn a living. Work could provide a source of purpose for some but also stress for many. The causes of stress could be an unmanageable workload, low pay, slow career development, an incompetent boss, and companies that do not care about your well-being.  Essays about work  can help us understand how to achieve a work/life balance for long-term happiness.

Work can still be a happy place to develop essential skills such as leadership and teamwork. If we adopt the right mindset, we can focus on situations we can improve and avoid stressing ourselves over situations we have no control over. We should also be free to speak up against workplace issues and abuses to defend our labor rights. Check out our  essay writing topics  for more.

A perennial search for a job that fulfills your sense of purpose has been an emerging trend in the work landscape in recent years. Yet, as human resource managers scramble to minimize employee turnover, some still believe there will still be workers who can exit a company through a happy retirement. “…[L]et’s creatively collaborate on ways to re-establish our own sense of value in our institutions while saying yes only to invitations that nourish us instead of sucking up more of our energy.”

Quiet quitting signals more profound issues underlying work, such as burnout or the bosses themselves. It is undesirable in any workplace, but to have it in school, among faculty members, spells doom as the future of the next generation is put at stake. In this essay, a teacher learns how to keep from burnout and rebuild a sense of community that drew her into the job in the first place.

“We don’t think about managing the demands that are pushing our buttons, we just keep reacting to them on autopilot on a route I call the burnout treadmill. Just keep going until the paramedics arrive.”

Studies have shown the detrimental health effects of stress on our mind, emotions and body. Yet we still willingly take on the treadmill to stress, forgetting our boundaries and wellness. It is time to normalize seeking help from our superiors to resolve burnout and refuse overtime and heavy workloads.

“As we start to emerge from the pandemic, today’s workplace demands a different kind of VUCA career growth. One that’s Versatile, Uplifting, Choice-filled and Active.”

The only thing constant in work is change. However, recent decades have witnessed greater work volatility where tech-oriented people and creative minds flourish the most. “Ultimately, the biggest challenge in regulating labor markets in developing countries is what to do about the hundreds of millions of workers (or even more) who are beyond the reach of formal labor market rules and social protections.”

The challenge in regulating work is balancing the interest of employees to have dignified work conditions and for employers to operate at the most reasonable cost. But in developing countries, the difficulties loom larger, with issues going beyond equal pay to universal social protection coverage and monitoring employers’ compliance.

“Suppose you want to design the best company on earth to work for. What would it be like? For three years, we’ve been investigating this question by asking hundreds of executives in surveys and in seminars all over the world to describe their ideal organization.”

If you’ve ever wondered what would make the best workplace, you’re not alone. In this essay, Jones looks at how employers can create a better workplace for employees by using surveys and interviews. The writer found that individuality and a sense of support are key to creating positive workplace environments where employees are comfortable.

“Bottom line: People seek purpose in their lives — and that includes work. The more an employer limits those things that create this sense of purpose, the less likely employees will stay at their positions.”

In this essay, Turner looks at how employees seek value in the workplace. This essay dives into how, as humans, we all need a purpose. If we can find purpose in our work, our overall happiness increases. So, a value and purpose-driven job role can create a positive and fruitful work environment for both workers and employers.

In this essay, talk about how you envision yourself as a professional in the future. You can be as creative as to describe your workplace, your position, and your colleagues’ perception of you. Next, explain why this is the line of work you dream of and what you can contribute to society through this work. Finally, add what learning programs you’ve signed up for to prepare your skills for your dream job. For more, check out our list of simple essays topics for intermediate writers .

For your essay, look deeply into how your school prepares the young generation to be competitive in the future workforce. If you want to go the extra mile, you can interview students who have graduated from your school and are now professionals. Ask them about the programs or practices in your school that they believe have helped mold them better at their current jobs.

Essays about work: The importance of teamwork at work

In a workplace where colleagues compete against each other, leaders could find it challenging to cultivate a sense of cooperation and teamwork. So, find out what creative activities companies can undertake to encourage teamwork across teams and divisions. For example, regular team-building activities help strengthen professional bonds while assisting workers to recharge their minds.

Finding a job after receiving your undergraduate diploma can be full of stress, pressure, and hard work. Write an essay that handholds graduate students in drafting their resumes and preparing for an interview. You may also recommend the top job market platforms that match them with their dream work. You may also ask recruitment experts for tips on how graduates can make a positive impression in job interviews.

Creating a fun and happy workplace may seem impossible. But there has been a flurry of efforts in the corporate world to keep workers happy. Why? To make them more productive. So, for your essay, gather research on what practices companies and policy-makers should adopt to help workers find meaning in their jobs. For example, how often should salary increases occur? You may also focus on what drives people to quit jobs that raise money. If it’s not the financial package that makes them satisfied, what does? Discuss these questions with your readers for a compelling essay.

Motivation could scale up workers’ productivity, efficiency, and ambition for higher positions and a longer tenure in your company. Knowing which method of motivation best suits your employees requires direct managers to know their people and find their potential source of intrinsic motivation. For example, managers should be able to tell whether employees are having difficulties with their tasks to the point of discouragement or find the task too easy to boredom.

A handful of managers have been worried about working from home for fears of lowering productivity and discouraging collaborative work. Meanwhile, those who embrace work-from-home arrangements are beginning to see the greater value and benefits of giving employees greater flexibility on when and where to work. So first, draw up the pros and cons of working from home. You can also interview professionals working or currently working at home. Finally, provide a conclusion on whether working from home can harm work output or boost it.

Identifying critical skills at work could depend on the work applied. However, there are inherent values and behavioral competencies that recruiters demand highly from employees. List the top five qualities a professional should possess to contribute significantly to the workplace. For example, being proactive is a valuable skill because workers have the initiative to produce without waiting for the boss to prod them.

Sample Essay 1

The trend towards self-employment has surged in recent years, driven by a desire for autonomy and the potential for higher earnings, but it also brings challenges such as financial instability and increased workload. This essay will explore the primary reasons for this shift, including the quest for freedom and the lure of unlimited income, while also examining the drawbacks, like the lack of corporate benefits and the unpredictability of self-employment income.

The enticement of self-employment lies chiefly in the autonomy it provides, a valued commodity in a society that increasingly cherishes individualism. This autonomy not only allows for tailored work-life integration, a rarity in traditional employment, but also empowers the pursuit of innovative ventures without the hindrance of bureaucratic red tape. A case in point is Silicon Valley's tech entrepreneurs, who favor self-employment for its capacity to swiftly turn ideas into reality. Additionally, self-employment appeals to those seeking a proportional reward for their efforts. In contrast to the rigid pay structures of regular jobs, it promises no cap on earnings. This is particularly evident among freelance digital marketers, whose income, directly tied to their skill and effort, often surpasses that of their peers in more conventional roles.

However, this path is not devoid of challenges. One significant drawback is the absence of corporate safety nets. Self-employed individuals must often forego benefits like employer-sponsored health insurance and retirement plans, shouldering these responsibilities alone. Furthermore, the volatility of income can be daunting. Unlike steady paychecks, self-employed earnings can fluctuate dramatically, as evidenced by freelance writers who may experience periods of feast or famine depending on market demand. Another notable challenge is the increased workload. Managing all aspects of a business, from client acquisition to financial planning, can be overwhelming. The case of independent consultants, who often juggle multiple roles simultaneously, illustrates this struggle vividly.

In conclusion, while self-employment offers enticing benefits such as autonomy and potentially unlimited earnings, it also demands considerable resilience and adaptability. The decision to embark on this path should be made with a full understanding of both its glittering prospects and its gritty realities.

Sample Essay 2

In recent times, a growing trend has emerged where people choose to be self-employed, rather than working for a company or organization. This shift is largely fueled by the ease of starting online businesses and the ability to reach a diverse consumer base. However, this entrepreneurial freedom comes with its challenges, particularly the heightened competition. As Internet access broadens, it also empowers competing businesses, intensifying the competitive landscape in various business domains.

The key reason behind people’s motivation towards owning a business is the unprecedented advancement of online technology. Take internet shopping as an example, people can launch an online business within an incredibly short period. As establishing online farms incurs low cost and hassle, owners can comfortably launch a farm and earn a handsome margin, whereas in the past, people had to rent a retail space associated with a sophisticated registration process, and mostly ended up with an insignificant profit. Furthermore, the cost of advertising has declined drastically with the blessing of digital platforms. Nowadays, harnessing the benefits of social media, with a minimal cost, people are easily promoting their brands to a large audience.

Nevertheless, it is always challenging to own a business, as it comes up with a lot of relevant difficulties. One of them is the involved high operating cost. There is an intense competition among the businesses, which is making it difficult for the start-ups to make their products stand out in the market. Moreover, those who work for themselves, need to bear an inevitable financial risk. These people are deprived of official benefits like company picnics, holiday pays and sick pays etc.

To conclude, even though people are finding it easier to take on self-employment and access to the market using online platforms, there are some massive drawbacks that come along with this trend, because owning a small business and easy entry into markets might incur diverse business competition and financial risks.

Sample Essay 3

In contemporary society, an increasing number of individuals are gravitating towards self-employment, eschewing traditional employment within companies or organizations. This trend can be attributed to the allure of autonomy, flexibility, and the potential for greater financial rewards. However, this path is not without its pitfalls, including instability and a lack of social benefits. This essay will explore both the reasons behind this choice and the potential drawbacks associated with self-employment.

The primary allure of self-employment lies in the autonomy it offers, allowing individuals to take control of their professional destinies. Many people choose to be self-employed, rather than to work for a company or organization, because it empowers them to pursue their passions on their own terms, free from the constraints of corporate hierarchies. This independence not only fosters creativity and innovation but also allows for a more flexible work-life balance. For instance, a freelance graphic designer can choose projects that align with their creative vision and schedule work hours around family commitments. Additionally, the potential for financial gain is significant, as entrepreneurs can directly reap the benefits of their hard work and ingenuity, often leading to higher earnings than those possible in traditional employment roles.

However, the path of self-employment is fraught with challenges. The absence of a stable paycheck introduces financial uncertainty, making it difficult to plan for the future or secure loans for personal investments such as a home. Moreover, self-employed individuals must bear the full burden of health insurance and retirement savings, lacking the employer contributions that benefit traditional employees. The psychological toll, including isolation and stress, can also be significant, as the responsibility for the success or failure of the business rests solely on the individual’s shoulders.

In conclusion, while the autonomy, flexibility, and potential for financial prosperity are compelling reasons for many to choose self-employment over traditional employment, these benefits are counterbalanced by considerable disadvantages. These include financial instability, the responsibility for one’s own social security benefits, and the potential for increased stress and isolation.

A freelancer who used Fiverr to leave a bad office job explains how she knew it was time and the pros and cons of the lifestyle

  • Rose Almond is a fully self-employed freelance engineer after resigning from her office job in 2015.
  • Almond shared the positive aspects, and challenges, of this career move.
  • There can be quiet work periods, but she likes the flexibility of picking projects and when to work.

Insider Today

Rose Almond was over her 9-to-5 job as a mechanical engineer.

"It was not a good place to be for a young female engineer," she told Business Insider. "It didn't really suit me being in the office environment."

Plus, Almond said working a nights-and-weekends side hustle of freelance gigs was exhausting. So she quit her day job in 2015.

Now, she gets to choose her own schedule and which projects she works on.

"I knew something had to give," she said.

Almond lives in Canada and is fully self-employed as a freelance product design engineer. She said a lot of her work still falls under mechanical engineering. Almond didn't decide to become a self-employed freelancer lightly. To help prepare, Almond said she ensured she "had enough cash in my business to survive paying my bills" for a couple of months.

"Then I approached my employer to ask to switch to part-time hours so that I could ease softly into the freelance side," she added. "Honestly, I wasn't being utilized to the best of my ability, and I could have kept the same pace of work in half the time anyway, but they refused to even consider it. They got my resignation the same day."

For others hoping to identify when to make this lifestyle move, Almond said a main part of it comes down to recognizing both your strengths and weaknesses.

"Freelancing gives flexibility in scheduling your time, but comes with a responsibility for time management and a need to be able to self-motivate — even on the days it's hard to get going," she said. "Everyone has their own level of acceptable risk, which should be considered carefully in terms of financials, healthcare, and any other benefits that might be traded in."

Earning money through the freelance platform Fiverr

Since joining Fiverr in the summer of 2014, Almond has made around $288,000 through this freelance platform. This includes around a year of side work while still employed at her previous job. She has also done freelance work through Upwork.

In 2021, she made around $65,400 through Fiverr. Almond credits that partly to people looking to freelancers more amid the pandemic. Last year, her Fiverr earnings were nearly $36,000, based on documentation shared with Business Insider. Her total revenue from her self-employed work in 2023 was around 65,400 Canadian dollars, or over $47,500.

Almond offers product designs and creates concept sketches for clients. She said she helps clients "create the products that they're going to be able to sell." Based on her Fiverr profile, basic hand sketches for a product concept cost $750. Prices increase to $1,000 for digital sketches with color and $1,250 for 3D mockups. Those prices differ though if the delivery time is shortened. She also has prices listed for designing a client's product for 3D printing and prototyping.

"It's really fun to see the products actually getting launched and hitting the market," she said.

The pros and cons of working as a freelancer

Almond said choosing her own hours is a major upside; she likes working at night.

Location flexibility is another positive. Almond said she has completed projects while traveling. She also has done some work, such as answering people's questions, while waiting for school pickup.

Related stories

"I love that the focus is firmly on the quality of what you deliver, not something arbitrary like your location," she said.

Almond has found flexibility in deciding the projects to work on another pro to being a freelancer.

"That wasn't so much there at the beginning because at the beginning it was, kind of, you take what you can get," she said. "And now that I'm more established, I'm able to choose what I want to spend my time on a little bit more."

There are also pros specifically with being a freelancer as a parent, Almond has found. She has two young children. She said this type of work gives her flexibility with their schedules as needed and to take care of them if they are sick.

She said that flexibility would be tough if she were still working as a mechanical engineer for an employer.

"Honestly, a lot of the office culture, it isn't fair to women in the workforce," Almond said.

There can be some negatives that come with being a self-employed freelancer. Almond has found that "the lack of face-to-face interaction" that comes with freelance work can sometimes get lonely.

Another con is the workflow "isn't always smooth," she said.

"Some weeks or even months, it might be really quiet. There's not much going on," Almond said. "And then, suddenly, on one day, you get five different orders from different people that you've quoted for the last six months, and they all want everything done tomorrow."

She said managing client expectations, communications, and personalities can also be hard, "especially in a field where outcomes are not always linear and perfectly predictable," and "there's no buffer via management."

"I've definitely gotten better at setting clear guidelines and boundaries over the years," she added and noted this has helped with customer relations.

Almond is ready to explore working on her own products amid freelance gigs

Almond's advice for other parents hoping to take a chance on freelance work is to keep trying at this kind of work.

"Definitely don't expect it to be all at once," she said. "It does take a little bit of time to kind of ramp up, especially on platforms like Fiverr that have really grown, and they've got more people offering services now. But just keep working at it, and it will happen eventually."

Something she wished she had known before entering the freelance world is to "make sure you know your own value."

"It's very easy in a competitive environment like freelancing to offer your services too low," she said. "And sometimes it's better to hold out for the people who really will value you because they're going to come in with a better attitude, and that makes for a better working relationship."

Freelance work has now given Almond a chance to explore another work goal.

"The flexibility of the hours working with clients is letting me explore some of my own personal projects on the side, so I'm really excited to try and get some of my own products launched within the next few months and year."
