Sea animals are the animals that live deep in the seas. Let’s discuss this a little more in detail.

To understand this better, you’ve first got to know why oceans are important to us. Over 70% of the earth is occupied by oceans. Yes, we know that you know this. But, did you know that the oceans store 50 times more carbon dioxide than our atmosphere and produce over half of the world’s oxygen? Mindblowing, right!

Now let’s get to the sea animals. These animals help in using up the carbon dioxide in the ocean, allowing the ocean to absorb some more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

According to a study published by the UN Environment Program , whales can help reduce climate change. How? By trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. You see, whales eat a lot, and they poo a lot, too. Thus, they excrete large quantities of nutrients. Also, when they swim to the surface, which they frequently do because their lungs need oxygen, they increase the availability of nutrients in the seawater, which assists in the growth of phytoplankton, very tiny marine algae found in the oceans. Phytoplankton absorbs carbon dioxide, just like the plants and trees on the surface of the earth.

Marine world is altogether different from our world. It is different and unique in its own way. We are surrounded by all around us but for Aquatic animals water is their world.

They thrive on water. Though the ocean world is completely different yet life is thoughts to have evolved from oceans millions of years ago.

Hence we cannot deny its importance and significance in our lives.

Water is a world in itself in which both animals and plants live. The animals which live in water are called Aquatic animals.

The aquatic animals live in sea, ponds, lakes, rivers etc. but water is their permanent house. It can be saline, still tor fresh.

As our houses are of different kinds similarly the aquatic animals live in different environments according to their sustainability.

Their lifestyle is totally different from ours. They have a different respiratory system. They breathe inside water with the help of gills. Although they too need oxygen like us but the medium is different. We inhale oxygen from air where as they inhale oxygen from water.

But we human for our own selfish mean keep on containing their homes with oil-spills and garbage.

This makes their life a living hell. Increasing water contamination and human interference in their habitats puts several of aquatic species at a grave risk of extinction and endangerment.

Aquatic animals also balance the equilibrium among various species connected to a food chain. Thus aquatic animals have immense importance in the world also.

As any changes in their lives affects the lives of other animals as well. So to make a good ecological balance, we should keep monitoring sea or ocean water pollution.

The world of aquatic animals is very vast; it is too complex to study all of it. Some of the species are still beyond the reach of human beings.

Although science and technology have helped in discovering various species each day, yet the fact remains that the world is as dark, complex and unknown place buts it is immensely beautiful in its own ways.

The more we acknowledge it the more it becomes unknown for us.

Different types of animals with different characteristics reside in the marine world. Some breathe through gills and some through skin also.

Other than aquatic animals some amphibians like frogs etc. have the ability to live in water as well as on the ground also.

They can breathe in both the mediums- water as well air. Aquatic animals are very different from us in all respects. They usually have soft and delicate body.

This makes them very prone to die from a hard touch. So one ought to be very careful in dealing with them.

Most of the people only think about fishes when we talk about aquatic animals. But in reality there are too many animals other than fishes that live underwater.

Animals like mammals, mollusks, cnidarians and crustaceans are also a part of this ecology.

Fishes belong to the vertebrate’s family. They have a back bone like us. Different animals have different characteristics.

A fish called Salmon can live bath in saline as well as fresh water. Dolphins and whales are mammals and can live only in water.

Whereas animals like beavers and seals can exit from water for longer hours. Mammals cannot breathe under water so they have to come out at the surface to breathe air.

Aquatic animals also use sounds to communicate just like us. Some use these sounds to hunting their prey and some uses it for relocation of food.

But sometimes they also use it to stun their prey. They also communicate but the medium is different here. The medium is water.

Marine animals seem to recognize the voices of their family members and other species from a distance.

Whales and dolphins make different combination noises to communicate underwater. Aquatic animals can see well underwater through a certain distance only, due to the lack of sunlight.

But when we go towards the deeper ends of water, it turns all cold and black; devoid of any sunlight.

Their eyes are specially designed to see underwater in low light also but sounds help them to navigate accurately under water.

Sounds waves move five times faster than air. This specialty allows the animals to talk over long distances also.

The world of aquatic animals is gigantic but we human brings interfere in their habitat and threaten their existence.

The activities like overfishing, destructive fishing, marine pollution and climate change has increased their problems for the life that remains invisible to the naked eye and lives deep in the creeks and crevices of water.

Sound and light, both are an immediate necessity for aquatic animals. It helps them in finding food, avoiding danger and relocating their mates.

Some deep sea animals can prepare their own light for all their purposes. They are equipped with special characteristics features to generate light.

Sailfish which is the fastest fish in the ocean can swim at the speed of 68 mph to escape itself from predators like octopus.

A small sea animal named Mantis shrimp which is just 18 to 30 cm. in size can ‘accelerate its forelimb in same velocity of gunshot from a rifle’.

It can shatter its prey into pieces in less than a second. Its strength power can induce shock-waves on sea-beds.

Box jelly fish which are considered the most venomous creature in the world have a transparent body which helps it to remains hidden from the eyes of predators.

Its body have 5000 stinging cells which can stop the heart beat of the person in seconds if stung by it.

Aquatic animals have strong smell receptors. They can smell their predators from miles away.

The sharks have so strong nose receptors that the prey does not stand a chance of escaping the jaws of death. Smell plays an important role in underwater communication.

Like humans fishes also detect phenomenon that facilitate mating procedures. Fish can use smell to locate food.

We all know that Salmon fish can travel miles to spawn at its birthplace.

According to the survey, it is estimated that over 8 million species of animals exist on Earth, living on land and water. Each species has a unique place in the environment and balances the ecosystem. These species play a significant role in the stability of the ecosystem, environment, and our lives.

Since the beginning of human civilisation, humans have interacted with wildlife. Before the era of industrialisation and urbanisation, human life was dependent on animals. The big animals were a threat to our ancestors who once lived in caves and were nomads. Eventually, they learned to survive, fight and use the animal's skin for clothing, the meat for food or bait, and ivory elements as utensils or ornaments. Even as humans evolved, animals have contributed to various aspects like transportation, the economy, social life etc. The increased dependence of humans on animals has caused threats to their existence. Hence, their preservation and protection against any abuse is our responsibility.

Animals are the most adorable and loving creatures existing on Earth. They might not be able to speak, but they can understand. They have a unique mode of interaction which is beyond human understanding. There are two types of animals: domestic and wild animals.

Domestic Animals | Domestic animals such as dogs, cows, cats, donkeys, mules and elephants are the ones which are used for the purpose of domestication. Wild animals refer to animals that are not normally domesticated and generally live in forests. They are important for their economic, survival, beauty, and scientific value.

Wild Animals | Wild animals provide various useful substances and animal products such as honey, leather, ivory, tusk, etc. They are of cultural asset and aesthetic value to humankind. Human life largely depends on wild animals for elementary requirements like the medicines we consume and the clothes we wear daily.

Nature and wildlife are largely associated with humans for several reasons, such as emotional and social issues. The balanced functioning of the biosphere depends on endless interactions among microorganisms, plants and animals. This has led to countless efforts by humans for the conservation of animals and to protect them from extinction. Animals have occupied a special place of preservation and veneration in various cultures worldwide.

Animals are made up of numerous cells that can move, sense and reproduce. They play a vital role in maintaining nature’s balance. Numerous animal species exist in the land as well as water, and each has a purpose for their existence.

Different Types Of Animals

Biologists have divided into particular groups for better understanding at the species level, for instance – amphibians - animals which live on land as well as water, reptiles – which are scaled bodies and cold-blooded animals, mammals – animals which give birth to the offspring in the womb and have mammary glands, birds – animals with forelimbs evolved to wings and feather-covered body, and also lays eggs for giving birth, fishes – aquatic animals having fins in place of limbs, and gills for the respiration, insects – they are mostly six-legged or more, and mostly having a head, abdomen, and thorax.

How Animals Help Humans

Since the time of existence and evolution of human beings, we have established ourselves as the greater and more superior species because of sophisticated and advanced ways of thinking and applying. With time, humans have learned to use animals to their benefit and have also realised how to incorporate animals into our social lives:-

Animal husbandry has been in existence for a very long period of time.

Animals have been used for numerous purposes like clothing, food, entertainment, and transportation.

Animals have also been used to discover new things from tests and research. Several vaccines and medicines obtained from animals have turned out to be benison.

Animals have also been used for outer-space explorations, leading to milestone achievements in scientific discoveries.

Humans have used animals for good (sustain livelihood) and evil purposes (acts of torture to poor animals). Even as the world modernised, people have started thinking about animals and working for their rights, creating awareness among humans.

The bond between humans and animals has evolved as a strong bond, and now both coexist with a mutual understanding of nature. Humans have strived to preserve those endangered and rare species via modern conservation modes, including national parks, sanctuaries, etc.

My Experience With Animals

As a child raised in a city, I never had first-hand experience with animals. Though people domesticate animals, I was always afraid of them. Due to the fear of getting infected and being bitten, I never went near them. One fine day, I saw finches in the pet shop near my house. At first glance, I loved them for a long time, but then one of my friends asked me to reach out to them and observe them. To my astonishment, the finches drew near me and were looking at me. I thought to take them with me, and when I took them – I was amazed by their understanding, love and interactions. This led me to love the animals and look at them from a different perspective, not with a fearful heart. They are the most loving creatures existing on Earth.

Aquatic Ecosystem

Habitat is a part of an ecosystem. The climate, plants, and animals are the identities of a habitat. Ecosystems primarily have two domains:

Terrestrial or Land ecosystem
Aquatic or Water ecosystem.

Water supports many lives. Organisms which survive in water are called aquatic organisms. They depend on water for their food, shelter, reproduction and all other life activities.

An aquatic ecosystem includes a group of interacting organisms which are dependent on one another and their water environment for nutrients and shelter. Examples of aquatic ecosystem include oceans, lakes and rivers.

An aquatic ecosystem includes freshwater habitats like lakes, ponds, rivers, oceans and streams, wetlands, swamp, etc. and marine habitats include oceans, intertidal zone, reefs, seabed and so on. The aquatic ecosystem is the habitat for water-dependent living species including animals, plants, and microbes.

Types of Aquatic Ecosystem

Different types of aquatic ecosystems are as follows:

Freshwater Aquatic Ecosystem

They cover only a small portion of earth nearly 0.8 per cent. Freshwater involves lakes, ponds, rivers and streams, wetlands, swamp, bog and temporary pools. Freshwater habitats are classified into lotic and lentic habitats. Water bodies such as lakes, ponds, pools, bogs, and other reservoirs are standing water and known as lentic habitats. Whereas lotic habitats represent flowing water bodies such as rivers, streams.

Lotic Ecosystems

They mainly refer to the rapidly flowing waters that move in a unidirectional way including the rivers and streams. These environments harbor numerous species of insects such as beetles, mayflies, stoneflies and several species of fishes including trout, eel, minnow, etc. Apart from these aquatic species, these ecosystems also include various mammals such as beavers, river dolphins and otters.

Lentic Ecosystems

They include all standing water habitats. Lakes and ponds are the main examples of Lentic Ecosystem. The word lentic mainly refers to stationary or relatively still water. These ecosystems are home to algae , crabs, shrimps, amphibians such as frogs and salamanders, for both rooted and floating-leaved plants and reptiles including alligators and other water snakes are also found here.

Wetlands are marshy areas and are sometimes covered in water which has a wide diversity of plants and animals. Swamps, marshes, bogs, black spruce and water lilies are some examples in the plant species found in the wetlands. The animal life of this ecosystem consists of dragonflies and damselflies, birds such as Green Heron and fishes such as Northern Pike.

Marine Aquatic Ecosystem

Marine ecosystem covers the largest surface area of the earth. Two third of earth is covered by water and they constitute of oceans, seas, intertidal zone, reefs, seabed, estuaries, hydrothermal vents and rock pools. Each life form is unique and native to its habitat. This is because they have adaptations according to their habitat. In the case of aquatic animals, they can’t survive outside of water. Exceptional cases are still there which shows another example of adaptations (e.g. mudskippers). The marine ecosystem is more concentrated with salts which make it difficult for freshwater organisms to live in. Also, marine animals cannot survive in freshwater. Their body is adapted to live in saltwater; if they are placed in less salty water, their body will swell (osmosis).

Ocean Ecosystems

Our planet earth is gifted with the five major oceans, namely Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and the Atlantic Ocean. Among all these five oceans, the Pacific and the Atlantic are the largest and deepest ocean. These oceans serve as a home to more than five lakh aquatic species. Few creatures of these ecosystems include shellfish, shark, tube worms, crab small and large ocean fishes, turtles, crustaceans, blue whale, reptiles, marine mammals, seabirds, plankton, corals and other ocean plants.

Coastal Systems

They are the open systems of land and water which are joined together to form the coastal ecosystems. The coastal ecosystems have a different structure, and diversity. A wide variety of species of aquatic plants and algae are found at the bottom of the coastal ecosystem. The fauna is diverse and it mainly consists of crabs, fish, insects, lobsters snails, shrimp, etc.

Plants and animals in an aquatic ecosystem show a wide variety of adaptations which may involve life cycle, physiological, structural and behavioural adaptations. Majority of aquatic animals are streamlined which helps them to reduce friction and thus save energy. Fins and gills are the locomotors and respiratory organs respectively. Special features in freshwater organisms help them to drain excess water from the body. Aquatic plants have different types of roots which help them to survive in water. Some may have submerged roots; some have emergent roots or maybe floating plants like water hyacinths.

The never-ending water body is filled with various aquatic animals that are interesting, unique, and mysterious . Although we have explored only five percent of the water bodies, we have already discovered around 230,000 species. What Are Aquatic Animals?

Water or aquatic animals are either vertebrate or invertebrate animals, which live in the water all through or most of their lives. These animals breathe air through their lungs or gills by extracting the oxygen dissolved in the river, lake, or ocean water.

Types Of Water Animals

Aquatic animals living in freshwater are called freshwater animals and those living in saltwater bodies such as the sea, oceans, etc., are called marine animals.

Varieties Of Aquatic Animals

1. sea turtles.

One of the few animals with blue blood, octopuses are considered the most intelligent of all the invertebrates. Scientific studies are increasingly confirming that they are sentient creatures i X Creatures that can feel, sense, and react to the environment with their emotions ( 2 ).

2. Seahorses

They are unique in a way that the male carries the babies, instead of the female. The female deposits her eggs in a pouch in the male. The mating ritual includes dancing and intertwining the tails. Pregnancy lasts for two to five weeks with just one percent of offspring surviving to reach adulthood ( 3 ).

3. Blue whales

They are the largest animals and have evolved from the hippopotamus. They are an endangered species with just 4,500 left on the planet . They can swim up to five miles an hour, but on sensing danger, they can speed up to 30 miles an hour. The best part about blue whales is that they can sleep while swimming with half its brain functioning.

The graph below represents how the population of these gigantic sea animals have dwindled over the years. It shows that the population size of the mature Atlantic blue whale ( Balaenoptera musculus intermedia ) sharply declined from 1960 to 2000 and has marginally risen by the year 2020.

4. dolphins.

They are beautiful, intelligent, and friendly aquatic animals and are the only mammals born tail first. They take care of and nurture old or hurt members in a group, and the young ones live with their mothers until they are three years old.

5. Electric eels

They belong to the knife fish family and are one of the 500 fishes that can produce electricity. The skin of the eel insulates it from its electric attack, but if the eel is wounded it could shock itself. The electric shock of an eel is powerful enough to knock down a horse and can prove fatal to a human. Some eels produce enough electricity to light ten bulbs!

6. Jellyfish

They are one of the oldest aquatic organisms and came into existence even before the dinosaurs. They have been around for 500 to 700 million years. Some species possess light-sensitive organs and can glow in the dark. The jellyfish does not have bones, brain, heart, and head ( 4 ).

They can change genders depending on the mating situation. They can also change back to their original genders ( 5 ).

8. Great white shark

It is one of the most well-known species of aquatic animals and the largest predators in the oceans. Sharks may attack humans, but they don’t eat them as humans lack fat. Great Whites in South Africa are famous for their majestic jumps from water. Male sharks mature when they turn ten while females mature when they turn 15. Females give birth to two to ten sharks after a year of pregnancy. Baby sharks care for themselves from the moment they are born; parent sharks don’t exhibit parental care ( 6 ).

It means fish tooth, and they possess powerful jaw bones and pointed sharp teeth. They have extremely sensitive organs that help them detect blood in oceans just like the sharks. Piranhas are not only omnivorous but also cannibals, with an insatiable appetite for blood.

10. Cuttlefish

It is a slow swimmer, and swims by emitting out a large quantity of water from its mantle. The phenomenon is known as jet propulsion, and it aids cuttlefish in escaping predators. They also release ink to escape from sharks and large fishes. Cuttlefish was widely used as a source of ink in ancient times ( 7 ).

Being mammals, can easily stay underwater for 30 minutes without having to come to the surface to breathe. They are incredibly protective of one another and would rush to help any walrus under attack.

12. Starfish

They can change their gender at any time, reproduce sexually or asexually, and in sexual reproduction, the females produce millions of eggs. Though most starfish have only five arms, some could have about 20 to 40 arms as well. They can regenerate a body part within a year ( 8 ).

13. Giant squids

They are one of the most mysterious animals and live at depths of 2000 to 3000 feet in the oceans. Information on giant squids depends entirely on the carcasses i X The remains of a dead animal found at beaches. They don’t hunt predators but ambush them. Some produce luminescent inks i X Ink with a type of pigment that absorbs the fallen light and re-emits it at another wavelength to escape predators.

It is popular as ‘sea cow’ and is one of the few vegetarian aquatic mammals. They survive only on seagrass and can consume about 88 pounds of seaweed every day. They are a vulnerable species that need protection and are put up in various sanctuaries across the world ( 9 ).

15. Lobsters

Lobsters are crustaceans found in coastal waters worldwide, preferring cold and salty ocean environments ( 10 ). Residing on the ocean floor, they primarily consume fresh food, such as fish, clams, crabs, sea urchins, mussels, and occasionally other lobsters ( 11 ). Lobster blood, typically grayish or clear, circulates through large vessels by a heart located just behind the stomach ( 12 ).

16. Narwhals

The narwhal, categorized as a toothed whale, stands apart from its counterparts with no teeth in its mouth. Rather distinctively, male narwhals possess a single long, straight tooth (or tusk) that extends two to three meters from their upper left jaw. These marine mammals primarily feed on Greenland halibut, Arctic and polar cod, squid, and shrimp. Narwhals feature a distinctive black-and-white mottled skin pattern, with their undersides being white.

About 71% of Earth’s surface is covered with water. Unfortunately, only 3% of the water available is freshwater. About two-thirds of the freshwater lies in the form of frozen glaciers and ice caps. The rest of the small portion is available in the form of groundwater and surface water.

We totally depend on water for multiple purposes. Water is used in agriculture for the irrigation of crops. We use water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other domestic purposes. Water is used for recreational activities. In industries, water is used as a coolant, solvent and also used in other manufacturing purposes. Hydroelectricity is generated with the help of water. Water is also used for navigation and transportation of goods. This tells us how water is the most essential component of life and every drop of water is vital for sustenance.
