Moreover, the special part about my celebration is that my siblings prepare a dance performance for me every year on my favourite song. It is hilarious as they include funny steps deliberately to make me laugh.

The most exciting part about my birthday celebration is opening gifts when everyone leaves. I cherish every gift of mine dearly no matter how big or small. My favourite gift till date is the huge teddy bear my father got for me when I was six years old.

My Birthday Essay

Birthdays are often a joyous occasion for a person and their loved ones. People celebrate their birthdays in different ways, for instance, by partying, praying, or going on a trip. Here are a few sample essays on “My Birthday”.

100 Words Essay On My Birthday

My favourite day of the year for me is my birthday, which is on December 20. It's the day when I can do whatever I feel like, and I am made to feel extra special by my parents. My birthdays are always planned in advance. My parents always made an effort to prepare for my birthdays. When I was younger they bought me new clothes, new shoes, and new accessories so that I could dress my best.

My Birthday Essay

They also used to take me to the market and get me to buy may favourite toys and video games. As I got older, slight changes emerged in the way we celebrate my birthday. Now, instead of receiving toys as a gift from my parents, I receive money. My family and friends gather around me to sing "Happy Birthday" as I cut the cake, and shower me with their blessings and good wishes.

200 Words Essay On My Birthday

I believe that it is a privilege for us to get to celebrate our birthdays, for a huge chunk of children does not get this opportunity. I believe birthdays are also a time for us to realise our responsibilities and take a step towards fulfilling them. I always make different plans for my birthday every year, but one thing that is common every year is that my dad and I visit the temple and give out sweets to the poor as we leave. It brightens my morning to see the children's smiles.

Gifting The Needy | Because my birthday falls in the chilly month of December, I made the decision last year to purchase winter clothing for poor and needy families living close to my home rather than spending money on a party and decorations on my birthday. My parents supported and helped me when I discussed this idea with them.

The Celebrations | We went shopping for clothing in the afternoon, including sweaters, jackets, socks, gloves, and other necessities, and distributed them among underprivileged children. The greatest gift they gave me was their joy and well wishes. We had a simple family dinner after returning home, which was a great way to end my day.

500 Words Essay On My Birthday

I, like many of us, am always excited about celebrating my birthday. In fact, my planning of my birthday celebrations begins weeks and months before the actual day. I also get my parents to brainstorm and suggest how we would celebrate my birthday.

One thing I always ensure is that my birthday celebrations should involve the most special people of my life, that is, my family and friends, and that I should also do some good to the needy and underprivileged children. Here is a detailed explanation of how I celebrated my birthday in one of the previous years.

Celebrations At School

On my birthday, which was on December 20’ 2008, the whole school sang a birthday song for me in the morning assembly. I wore my favourite dress to school instead of the school uniform and distributed sweets among all students and teachers. For my friends who reside far from my house, I planned a party.

We went for lunch, my father picked us up and drove us to a restaurant. They were all talking happily as they ate lunch. After lunch and dessert, my father dropped off my friends at their houses before we returned home.

Evening Celebrations

I had a variety of plans for the evening. A birthday party was planned by my parents at home with lovely decorations and a big theme cake.

The Cake | The decoration was done by an event planner, and the cake was also customised. It was of light blue and pink colour and had detailing made of cream-like flowers and leaves, with two candles attached at the top of it. It was made of two layers, the first layer was of strawberry flavour, and the other was of vanilla.

What We Did | By 5:30, all of my friends and family members had arrived wearing party clothes. They all wished me birthday. Around six o'clock, we had begun playing games like races, musical chairs, and other activities. After playing, I cut the cake, and everyone handed me gifts. Although I had to wait, I was very eager to open the gifts. After the cutting of the cake, dinner was served, with a few starters, and both vegetarian and non-vegetarian main course. I also gave the guests a return gift as an expression of thanks. The return gift consisted of a small ‘thank you’ card and some chocolates.

Gifts I Got

Everyone went back to their homes after dinner, and I started opening the gifts, no matter small or big. I received one Barbie doll set, some chocolates, video games and one handmade card made by my friend. I became emotional on seeing the handmade card as it was beautifully crafted, having some pictures of my friends attached to it. I kept this card safely inside my almirah so that it remained as it is and did not get lost.

My parents and I were feeling incredibly exhausted, but we were happy that we had a great party and a meaningful day. My parents got emotional thinking that time was flying by too fast, and soon I would grow up enough to get married and leave their house.

The day would forever remain etched in my memory. I was still pondering on how I would celebrate, dance and merry-make in my eighteenth birthday. The colorful moment was of great significance to my life. Despite having been brought up in a well-off background, I had adopted the attitude of simplicity. I always strove to be humble and admired individuals based on their personality. This very day, I expected a collection of gifts from friends and relatives. Most importantly, I yearned for a gift from mum. I persistently reminded her about the occasion as if she had forgotten. The day had finally come. My eighteenth birthday became a reality. As I walked past my private study room, I spotted a token on my desk. It was wrapped in a sumptuous cover. I wanted the contents revealed to my conscience. However small the package appeared to be, my thoughts behind the token was the source of the inner beauty associated with it. As I opened the package, I was impressed by the lustrous silvery appearance that it possessed. This prompted me to endlessly ponder at the glamour of the gift each and every time I gave it a glance. The ancient adage which suggests that all which glitters is not gold was vividly inscribed in my mind. More sentimental value was attached to the person offering a token as opposed to its economic quantification. During the special occasion of my eighteenth birthday, the token that I received from my only mum and care-taker occasion conspicuously stood out. I strolled outside my parents’ compound as I enjoyed the cool summer winds. It wasn’t just an ordinary day. It was the eighteenth birthday that I had yearned for! Although I hardly celebrated significant occasions in my lifetime, the gifts colored the event and graced that particular occasion. I had often opted for simple presents and assets in possession. This attribute applied when it came to either receiving or dishing out gifts. My eighteenth birthday was the most anticipated as I yearned for a token from my mother. Irrespective of the impression a token generated to the public, I still appreciated it. I wasn’t bothered whether a token happened to be a pair of second-hand shoes or the most popular car in the vehicle mainstream. My conviction on passion and affection was based on the individual expressing the will to offer the gift. The present that I received from mum was a Gucci model pen; silvery, heavy and thick as well. The top was inscribed in cursive dark Arabic letters. The words were interpreted as “I’ll always love you.” The words had, and still have a heavy impact on my heart. I feel confident, appreciated and happier than before ever time I take a glance at my pen. It’s so exciting to write with mum’s pen. Its liquid composition is cool while the smooth sleek surface is comfortable to work with. The token might have sounded relatively cheap, but it wasn’t inexpensive as one would have thought! It was about my position in my mum’s heart. The Arabic inscription was worth to reckon with. Despite the fact that that they happen to be traditional words, she verbally reiterated the meaning at the exact time and occasion. Consequently, I had treasured an important trait of my mother within my heart-simplicity and love for people. No one could ever grab these aspects from me.

Essay on How I Celebrated My Birthday [PDF]

Hello readers, today this essay presentation is on how I celebrated my birthday. A birthday is the most exciting day of everyone’s life, a special day which is your own. So let’s dive into today’s essay on My Birthday Celebration.

Essay on How I Celebrated My Birthday feature image

What can be the most exciting and favorite day of my life than my birthday? I have celebrated my birthday last week on Saturday. I invited all my friends and dear ones at my place.

I have been really excited about my birthday last month. My relatives were also there to celebrate my birthday with me. As it was the day of the weekend hence my grandmother arranged a small pooja where my relatives and neighbours came to bless me for a better future.

I was really happy as I got so many wishes and blessings. Then after the pooja was over, I and my mother went shopping for buying me a gift. My father joined up for shopping too.

I got a really pretty dress as a present for my birthday. I wore the same dress for my birthday party. As the shopping was over I came back to my house and found that the house was decorated by my brother with balloons and frills all along. I also found that there was nobody in the hall.

As I entered the house and my parents were busy getting other gifts from the car. As soon as I stepped into the house, all my friends, family members, and relatives jumped out and wish me “Happy Birthday”. I was really shocked but then surprised by the same that happened.

My parents came along and kissed me on my forehead. I was in tears as I was really happy and overwhelmed. I feel they have done everything to make my birthday the most memorable one. Being it my 10th birthday, I got ten different small and big gifts from my parents.

As everyone was enjoying in the hall I went upstairs and got dressed in the same dress my parents gifted to me. I came downstairs to enjoy the party. As soon as I reached downstairs I saw my school friends waiting for me.

I played with them for a while and then my father came up with the cake. The cake was very beautiful as it was my favorite flavor. I like chocolate truffle the most and my dad always takes care of my wishes.

He put the cake on the table and everybody exclaimed that it is so beautiful. Delighted by the site, I saw that the cake was two-storey and that is what I was planning for so long.

I hugged my dad and then I proceeded further. Everyone was cheering me up for the birthday as I blew the candle and cut the cake. The taste of the cake was really delicious.

After I cut the cake I gave it to all the loved ones by myself. Everyone gave me the gifts that they have brought for me. I was really happy about receiving all the gifts and blessings.

My parents also have surprised something else too; as everybody was enjoying the great party my brother who is 2 years older than me recited a poem for me. That was really cute and simple. That melted my heart and I felt that I am the luckiest girl on this planet.

I ate and then enjoyed dancing and playing with my friends and brother. We danced a lot for a lot of time. I still remember how we all were celebrating my birthday with so much excitement. Then the food was served and everyone ate it happily.

I also ate noodles and pizzas as they are of my most liking. Everybody seemed happy. All my friends played with me and my cousins like musical chairs, hide and seek, Jaenga were some games that we played. The winner got some return gifts too.

That time was really fun and everybody enjoyed it a lot. I also received calls from all the people and relatives who couldn’t show up at the party. They were also really happy for me. My best friend, Kavya also sang a song for me that showed that she considers me the best of friends.

She has been with me since my childhood. When everybody has enjoyed themselves completely, then all my friends and relatives started to go as it was really late. Everybody departed by giving me good luck and prosperity for my studies and life.

Then I helped everyone in winding up the mess. As we all were free and changed for our night suits, I asked my grandmother to unpack the birthday gifts. I was really excited about that part of the day. As soon as mom and dad bring gifts to my room I started opening them.

I was surprised that I got such lovely, precious, and great gifts or my birthday. I got an amazing wristwatch from my grandmother and my brother gifted me a diary which had such a beautiful cover. I was very happy seeing such gifts.

My friends gave me really nice gifts as there were stuff toys, books, crayons, paint colours, photo frames and several dresses for me. I liked all the gifts a lot. But one I received from my family will always be the most special to me. I celebrated my 10th birthday with a lot of surprises and gifts. My birthday was really memorable and I hope I celebrate many more birthdays like this.

Someone said: “Motherhood is the most merciful love”. Someone said: “Motherhood is the most tolerant of love”. There is nothing stronger and purer than maternal love. It is a unique bond between the child and his mother, and the first real love a child experiences the moment he is born. My life has taught me that maternal love is equally self-giving, generous, unmercenary, and irreplaceable. It is unique. It is unstoppable and never-ending. It is the greatest miracle a child witnesses and experiences from the very first until the very last day of his life. The selfless and unrequited character of maternal love turns our mothers into the carriers of unique life philosophy and vision, which we accept, comprehend, and later transfer to our own children.

It was a routine summer day in 2000. I woke up early, opened the window, and spread my arms to welcome the new day. I felt greedy to grasp and feel the sense of fresh and chilly air on my skin and in my lungs. For a moment, I thought the air could touch my soul. Suddenly, I realized the significance of the day. It was no longer routine, but filled with unbelievable expectations – that was the day when my mother had been born. It was my mother’s birthday – the day that was equally significant for me and the most special person in my life. I was standing in front of the window, trying to imagine my mother’s face and her mood on that special day. However, I could not wait any longer and had to act quickly, to be able to prepare my surprise before she could see me.

I gathered all pocket money I had, to buy a perfect gift for my mother. I must say that I had been extremely thorough in my pocket expenses, trying to save as much as I could to surprise my mom on that special day. I left the house, thinking about my mother and my love to her. I walked down the road, thinking of how my mother would react when she saw my present. I knew she would be surprised. I felt she would be delighted. I was confident she would smile and whisper “thank you, darling”. I expected that my present would make her feel special and loved. I walked down the road, thinking of how good or hurtful I had been toward my mother over the last year. No, our relations had never been perfect. We could argue and even quarrel, but those rare instances never spoiled the unique bond we longed to preserve and expand. It was a unique sense of belonging which we experienced every single second of our lives. Birthday was a perfect occasion to prove my commitment to my mother. It was a perfect way to make my mother feel valued and recognized. That was the day when I could finally reveal my gratitude for everything my mother had done for me.

With so much on my mind, I did not notice how I approached a small mall. To a large extent, it was a subconscious move I could not control. I went in without thinking of the amount of money I held in my pocket. I was wandering across the lines of products and wonderfully beautiful things, until I realized that the money I had could not suffice to bring my mother a decent gift. With the sense of sorrow, regret, and disappointment I had to leave. I was standing in the middle of the parking lot, thinking of what I would have to do. I got extremely reasonable and thorough. I knew my finances were scarce, but I could not let my mother go without a present. I decided to visit several different malls, and that was, probably, the best decision I could take at the moment. I decided not to give up. I would be persistent and reasonable in my search for the best birthday present. However, the next series of visits to smaller and larger malls went without any result. I was growing nervous. I was losing time but did not find anything even close to what would suit my mother and the remarkable birthday occasion. Suddenly, I saw a small roadside shop and reluctantly walked inside.

The first thought that happened to me when I entered the store was “What am I doing here?” I was surrounded by a variety of smaller and bigger items, the ones which people traditionally buy on their way to other places. The name “roadside store” told everything for itself, and I doubted I would find anything nice there. The cashier man might have noticed my hesitation, because I heard the traditional, even impersonal may-I-help-you question. The question expressed more duty than genuine willingness to help and sounded extremely automatic. I answered, “I am looking for a birthday gift for my mother, but I feel ashamed to say that I do not have enough money in my pocket”. Suddenly, the cashier’s face grew serious, and he uttered: “The best gift you can give your mother is love!” I left the roadside store, thinking what the cashier man meant when he talked about love and what I could do to express my love and gratitude to my mother. Money no longer mattered. I felt that there was something else, more valuable than money. So, I was developing a new strategy of birthday celebration for my mom.

I decided that to cook a meal for my mother would be an excellent way to celebrate her birthday. I went into the kitchen, filled with excitement and anticipation. Everything in the kitchen was familiar to me, but suddenly I realized how I missed cooking for my parents. The years at school burdened me with all sorts of responsibilities, leaving no time for real family pastime. I felt an urgent sense of guilt and something I had been missing for ages. Suddenly, I heard my mother coming out her room. The steps approaching, I had to take fast decision. Longevity noodles were everything I could think of at that time.

I was rushing around the kitchen. Everything turned into a mess. I had to do everything quickly, not to spoil the birthday picture. I heard my mother coming from the outside and rushed to meet her. Upon eeeing me in the kitchen, my mother smiled secretly and genuinely. She saw the noodles… Her look was strange, anticipating, surprised, and – oh my goodness! – grateful! She was grateful, and I felt so much appreciated for everything I had done to make my mother’s birthday special! My mother smiled while I was singing a birthday song and in a second, her black hair seemed to go white. With a tint of bitterness in my voice, I asked: “Anything wrong?” My mother raised her eyes, – they were filled with tears: “This is the best birthday I ever had in my life”…

I am standing in front of my window… Ten years have passed since the moment I heard those words. I can see my mother, sitting in front of me with a plate of longevity noodles and smiling. I can see myself running from store to store, searching for something I did not know I was holding in my hands; and in my heart. I look into the sky. Clouds are passing me by, and no one can imagine how much my mother’s birthday has changed my life. Even millions are not enough to get someone to love you for who you are. Even billions cannot secure you from tragic mistakes and failures. Material things are a double-edged sword – they can be equally valuable and killing. They can be useful and cold. They can be surprising and unimportant. The value of life is in being able to show love and affection every day. The value of life is in trying to remind someone of how loved and cherished they are. To love someone is a daily work. It is like sports – once you stop, you lose your skills and grow weaker. There is nothing better than to know somebody loves you, unconditionally and passionately. There is nothing better than to act as if you always miss an opportunity to show your love to others. “I will never forget that day,” – I keep saying to myself. I grab my suitcase and leave the house. Fresh air and street noise beat my face. I stop and look back into the window, to see my reflection… I pick up the phone and call my mother… and in a moment, I am on my way to the next point of no-return which, no matter the distance, cannot reduce the feelings of closeness and connectedness that follow me everywhere… thank you…

Essay, Paragraph on “My Best Birthday Present” English Composition in 200 words for kids and Students of Classes 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, College and Competitive Exams.

My best birthday present.

“I hope you like the present,” Aunt Julie told me with a twinkle in her eye. I nodded and thanked her for the gift. From the size of the box, I thought I would be getting a new pencil case.

I shrieked in delight when I opened my present that night. My aunt had given me the latest Play station Portable game console. I was in seventh heaven. I had been longing for it for the past month but my parents refused to buy it for me. They said that it was too expensive. I opened the box and took out the shiny new console. Aunt Julie had also bought me my favourite racing game. I could not believe it. I pinched myself just to make sure that I was not dreaming. I immediately charged the battery so that I would be able to use it the next day. I slept very late that night as I read through the manual from cover to cover. I was amazed by the different features. I could even download my favourite songs.

That night, I slept with the manual under my pillow. I dreamed that I was playing with my new game console. It was a dream comes true. It was the best present that I had ever received.

We all have our birthday party once every year on our birthday. On my birthday my father brings a big cake. We place candles on the cake. There is one candle for each year after my birth. When I am ten there will be ten candles on my cake. The cake is specially made for the occasion with ‘Happy Birthday’ written on it. But the porridge my mother prepares on the occasion is what I like most. I feel very important in my beautiful new dress. How I wish there were many birthdays every year!

A Birthday Party Essay in 250 to 300 words

My friend and neighbour, Natasha, turned five years old recently and her parents held a birthday party for her. All the kids in the neighbourhood were invited. I was one of those invited. The party began at 6:30 p.m. at the house of the birthday girl. She wore a beautiful new dress. About twenty children were there. All of them were in their best clothes. Natasha’s mother served soft drinks to the guests. Then we had a round of games like ‘musical chairs’, ‘treasure hunt’ etc. It was fun and enjoyable. The winners were given prizes. By now more children had come to the party.

It was time to move on to the next program. A huge cake was brought out and put in the middle of the hall. The cake had five candles on it indicating the age of the birthday girl. The guests sang “Happy Birthday to Natasha” in the chorus as she cut the cake and blew the candles. The children clapped their hands in joy. Balloons were burst and cake pieces were served to all the guests. This was followed by giving and receiving gifts. All the guests gave presents to the girl and wished her all the best. In turn, all the children were also given gifts. By then it was 8 p.m. All the people were hungry and tired. Soon dinner was served. We all had our food which was quite delicious.

Shortly afterward people started leaving thanking the hosts for an enjoyable evening. I was also eager to go home and look at the present I had got. I wished Natasha all the best and slowly left the place.

Essay on Birthday Party in English ( 400 words )

Everybody likes to celebrate his birthday but children are particularly fond of celebrating their birthday. I turned twelve last month. I decided to celebrate my birthday with the usual pomp and show. I invited all my friends and relatives to my birthday party which was to be held in the evening on that particular day. My friends and I had decorated the room well with balloons and bunting where the party was to be held.

It became difficult for me to decide which dress I should wear for the party. Different friends of mine suggested different dresses. Finally, I chose the pink dress which had been sent by my aunt from Paris. Everybody at the party appreciated my dress. The guests started coming in the afternoon. By the evening, our house was full of guests and my friends.

I was glad to note that all my relatives and friends whom I had invited, had reached punctually. I blew twelve candles which were placed on the chocolate bedecked charming cake baked by a renowned baker of the town. Everybody clapped loudly.

As I started cutting the cake, all the guests and my friends spoke out in chorus “Happy Birthday to you.” Then everybody was given a piece of cake and drinks.

My father had also arranged an elaborate orchestra for the occasion. The tunes displayed by the orchestra were, indeed, marvelous and everybody there automatically started dancing to the sweet melodious tunes.

Then the dinner was held after which a brief session of skits, titbits, and jokes was held. My friend Savita, was declared the best clown for her mimicry, funny talks, and titbits. She was given a precious watch as a prize by my father.

As the guests left, I was tempted to have a glance at the gifts I had received. I found all the gifts precious since they were presented with genuine love and affection. The monetary value of a gift could not sway me to value any gift more or less than others. It is thus that even at this tender age I have realized that money does not always rule the roost.

The Day Ram Dass Died

By Christopher Fiorello

Ram Dass speaking to people seated in grass.

I woke up every thirty minutes the night before Ram Dass died. Stretching my perception through the big divider that separated his study—where I lay on a narrow couch—from his bedroom, I’d count the seconds between the short, ragged breaths churning through his sleep-apnea machine.

Four years later, I still have no idea why I was chosen to watch over him that night. I was at the bottom of the caregiver pecking order when it came to things directly related to Ram Dass’s body. I lacked the size and strength to transfer him from bed to wheelchair, or wheelchair to recliner, on my own; was too much of a novice to help organize his schedule or coördinate with his doctors; and was too unfamiliar to offer intellectual comfort in the rare moments that he wanted to talk. I’d met him ten months earlier, had his voice in my head for just three years. There were people in the house, on Maui, who had known him for more than three decades.

Before arriving, I had no formal medical training, but I had done three weeks of volunteering at a hospice facility in anticipation of coming to the island. Most of it involved moving Kleenex and changing the amount of light in empty rooms. Several times I sat with the dying. It was overwhelming to look at their closed eyes, feeling the heaviness in the room, the sense of something happening or about to happen. I scanned their faces for signs of pain, of fear or bliss, of transcendence. Through the palliative haze of opioids, they were impossible to read. No one was thrashing in pain; no one was smiling, either.

But it somehow buoyed me, being so close to death. The heaviness seemed critically important to my spiritual growth. I imagined myself giving peace to the dying through my presence, and in the process conquering my own fear of leaving life behind.

During my time with Ram Dass, I flitted constantly between self-righteousness and self-pity, one day indulging in grandiose fantasies that I was the heir to his legacy, charged with scattering his ashes, and the next imagining that everyone in the house hated me. The caregivers called it the classroom or the fire—a site of purifying work, a pathway to enlightenment.

My own work, purifying or otherwise, consisted mostly of handling various chores needed to keep a six-bedroom cliffside home with a pool, guesthouse, and two-acre yard going. For the bits that mattered—the scrubbing and the laundry and the cooking—there was a team of cleaners and a rotating cast of chefs. I ended up doing a lot of the rest: separating recycling, washing dishes, and replacing cat-scratched screens. There were three other caregivers in the house, and I was given a modest salary, plus my own room, meals, and shared access to a truck. I was an employee, but most days the house felt like a family, for better or worse.

Still, this was only the second time I’d been asked to spend the night in the study. It was generally perceived as an act of intense devotion: accepting a horrible night’s sleep, on a couch that reeked of cat pee, while facing the prospect of Ram Dass dying on your watch. I hated it, but I was there to care for the guy however it was decided that he needed care.

Most of the deciding was done by a woman affectionately dubbed Dassi Ma, a seventysomething lapsed-Catholic firecracker from Philadelphia. Dassi Ma was Ram Dass’s primary caretaker, and, though she no longer did the more strenuous physical tasks, she was still in command of what he got and when, often more so than Ram Dass himself. He was eighty-eight, and his health had been steadily deteriorating owing to a host of issues, including chronic infections. When I moved to Maui to be near him, in February, 2019, he had almost died the night I arrived. He bounced back, to everyone’s surprise but his own. “It wasn’t time,” I remember him saying in his stoic way, neither relieved nor disappointed. Now he had another spreading infection, and what appeared to be a cracked rib from being transferred to and from his wheelchair.

Ram Dass’s life is the subject of multiple documentaries, an autobiography, and a docuseries in development starring “ High Maintenance ” ’s Ben Sinclair. He was born Richard Alpert in 1931 to a wealthy Boston family. His pedigree was sterling: a Stanford psychology Ph.D., tenure track at Harvard, visiting professorship at Berkeley. In 1963, after five years at Harvard—much of it spent studying psychedelics with his fellow-psychologist Timothy Leary —he was fired for giving psilocybin mushrooms to an undergraduate.

He bopped around for a few years, often taking obscene amounts of mind-altering substances with Leary at the Hudson Valley estate of his friend Peggy Hitchcock. In 1967, like so many other Westerners of the time, he travelled to India in pursuit of exotic answers to life’s biggest questions. He’d grown disenchanted with the psychedelic world, which had come to seem rotely defined by highs and comedowns. In India, he met a Californian hippie named Kermit Riggs and followed him to a village called Kainchi, in the Himalayan foothills, to meet Riggs’s guru.

The guru was an old, squat man named Neem Karoli Baba. Before long, an enthralled Alpert was reborn as Ram Dass, or roughly “servant of God.” He returned to America later that year, arriving at the airport dressed in white robes and with a long, scraggly beard, and began his career as a spiritual teacher. Most of what he talked about, from 1967 to his death, were the experiences he had with Neem Karoli Baba, whom he called Maharaj-ji (“great king”), and the spiritual beliefs that emerged from those experiences.

One of his main ports of call became death and dying. In 1981, he co-founded the Dying Center, in Santa Fe, an organization that described itself as “the first place specifically created to support and guide its residents to a conscious death.” The center sought, in effect, dying people who wanted to use their death to become spiritually enlightened, and staff members who wanted to use other people’s deaths to achieve the same. Even before the Dying Center took shape, Ram Dass was lecturing on the spirituality of death, its place in the natural order, and the starkly contrasting way that he believed it was perceived in the East. His teachings were rooted in a specific vision of metaphysical reality, as informed by his guru and by the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text. Roughly, he believed in nondualism, that there existed an unchanging and absolute entity—the Hindu Brahman, which Ram Dass more frequently called God, the divine, or oneness—from which all material reality came. Included in that reality were souls (something like the Hindu atman ), which by their nature were caught in the illusion of their separateness from God, repeating a cycle of birth, suffering, death, and reincarnation until they remembered their true nature as part of the oneness—that is, until they became enlightened.

Death could be a crucial moment for remembering this nonduality, as it was when the “veil of separateness” was thinnest. In his 1971 book, “ Be Here Now ,” which has sold more than two million copies worldwide, Ram Dass summarizes his views: “You are eternal . . . There is no fear of death because / there is no death / it’s just a transformation / an illusion.”

He often spoke to crowds afraid of dying, repeating that he had “no fear of death.” He sat with people on their deathbeds and talked routinely about the power of “leaving the body,” his efforts to “quiet himself” so that the dying could see where they were in the reincarnation process and do what they could to escape it. His stories were sometimes graphic—people dying prematurely, or dying in tremendous pain—but always tinged with a lightness and humor.

Perhaps Ram Dass’s most memorable remarks about death came not from his own mind but from a woman named Pat Rodegast, who claimed she had channelled a spirit named Emmanuel from 1969 to her death, in 2012. Rodegast was working as a secretary, raising children, and practicing Transcendental Meditation when she began to see a light, which evolved into what she called telepathic auditory guidance. Some of that guidance was captured in three books published in the eighties and nineties, two of which came with forewords from Ram Dass. According to Ram Dass, when he asked Emmanuel what to tell people about death, Emmanuel replied that it was “absolutely safe,” “like taking off a tight shoe.”

I first encountered the voice of Ram Dass in 2016. I was twenty-seven and living in New York, in a Chinatown building that rattled every time an empty box truck drove down First Avenue. Each morning, I tumbled down five flights of sticky stairs and placed one of his talks deep into my ears, letting his distinct blend of scientific erudition and spiritual mysticism carry me across town.

He had a habit of segueing from psychological concepts, like attachment theory and childhood trauma, to cryptic ones, like Emmanuel’s messages and the astral plane, pausing briefly to ask listeners if they could really, truly “hear this.” He seemed to build on the insights of others who had revolutionized end-of-life care in America—thinkers such as the psychiatrist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross —but also spoke in the New Age argot of Alan Watts. I gobbled it all up, feeling my spiritual life deepen exponentially by the day. His lectures made me more prosocial, more anti-capitalist, more curious, and decidedly more self-loving.

This was my second rodeo with spirituality; growing up, a rigid strain of Protestantism had been foisted on me like a chore. In Kansas City, Missouri, I was enveloped by an atmosphere of creationism, tent revivals, and anti-abortion screeds. I still recall standing on a busy street as a six-year-old and holding a sign that read “Before I Formed You in the Womb I Knew You—God.”

The teachings of Ram Dass were nothing like that. They were straight out of the hippie movement, and seemed to license a more liberal, self-directed search for meaning. As the grind and filth of Manhattan wore me down, Ram Dass’s voice became a salve, a way to “wake up to the illusion of our separateness.” I turned to his work again and again—to ease my loneliness when, walking down the street, droves of people moved around me like I was a light post, or to arrogantly tell my ex-girlfriend that we would always be “together,” even though I’d already dumped her.

After a couple of years, I learned that I could actually meet Ram Dass, for free, by signing up for one of his “Heart-to-Hearts”—a one-on-one, hour-long Skype call he offered as a sort of public service. When my time came, and the man appeared onscreen, I was stunned into silence. I had thought of him as a spry, ethereal figure who existed only in decades-old recordings. This Ram Dass was very old and lived with fairly advanced aphasia, a side effect of a major stroke he’d had in 1997. His speech was slow—in our full hour, he said roughly sixty words—but not at all ponderous. I thought it gave him a mystical quality.

There was no format to the session; Ram Dass just smiled his winning smile and listened. At one point, after I’d nervously overshared, he told me, “You take yourself pretty seriously.” That struck me as profound, at least at the time, but what endured was more feeling than words. It seemed he had arrived at a place from which he could find genuine love for strangers like me. It didn’t strike me as brand positioning, or as a form of ego; I didn’t think he loved me in the sense that he wanted to be close, or even that he cared whether we got to know each other. I just believed he saw me as another soul, and that, in his view, made me worthy of kindness.

Ram Dass meditating.

By then, I was walking around New York, trying desperately to feel connected to anything. I wanted what Ram Dass had. So I left the city, intending, among other things, to get him to show me how to have it.

The friend I’d discovered Ram Dass with had already moved to Neem Karoli Baba’s temple, in Taos, New Mexico. I visited him for a fortnight of cooking group meals, wandering through the snowy high desert, and hobnobbing with Maharaj-ji zealots, including one white teen-ager who insisted that he was the reincarnation of Krishna, one of Hinduism’s most revered avatars. Like the young Krishna of lore, he would steal away to the temple pantry to eat pure butter until caught.

Some of this evoked my childhood church, where kids compared how quickly they could transition into speaking in tongues, or flexed the depth of their personal relationship with Jesus while leading a collective prayer. But this was my first encounter with Neem Karoli Baba devotees; I figured followers would be a bit more mellow the farther I got from his temple. Toward the end of my stay, I met a longtime friend of Ram Dass. He saw that I was eager to do volunteer work—known as seva , Sanskrit for “service”—so, when he learned of my intent to find Ram Dass on Maui, he offered to put in a good word to Dassi Ma.

That recommendation made the seemingly impossible possible. People of all ages came to the island to be near Ram Dass. Some found their way into the group texts for arranging kirtan —living-room chanting sessions at Ram Dass’s house—or beach excursions. A few found opportunities to be useful around the house, or made friends with one of the live-in caregivers, enabling them to drop by every week or so. But to be offered to help care for Ram Dass, for pay, as a virtual nobody, was exceptionally rare.

Upon arriving at the house, I found it shot through with the same quasi-religious fervor I had seen at the temple. I was quickly intercepted by another caregiver and taken to a lean-to, in a nearby pasture, so that I could silently meditate with prayer beads. It was incredibly humid, and I got annihilated by mosquitoes. I returned to the house to find a living room packed with people chanting—mostly the Hanuman Chalisa, a devotional hymn that features verses like “With the lustre of your vast sway, you are propitiated all over the universe.” A collective effervescence filled the room, and I joined along, staring at hundreds of statuettes of religious figures while fighting back the sense that I was in church.

After more than an hour of chanting, we milled about, greeting one another over chai and snacks. Attendees swapped stories of Maharaj-ji’s miracles, told me that my presence must be part of his plan, sat smiling at Ram Dass’s feet, their hands over their hearts. During my year on Maui, Ram Dass’s foundation led retreats at a local resort, where hundreds of people would gather for spiritual talks and chanting. Inevitably, someone at these events would look at me with confusion or pity when I told them my name was Christopher. “He hasn’t given you a name yet?” the person would ask. Ram Dass often bestowed a Hindu name on people: Lakshman, Govinda, Hari, Devi. I was fine with Christopher.

But there were other moments, informal and fleeting, when I witnessed the mixture of play and profundity that first drew me to Ram Dass. One autumn morning, two other caregivers and I were helping him get through his daily routine—brushing teeth and hair, putting on clothes and hearing aids, making the bed—when I turned on Doja Cat’s “Go to Town,” a song I later learned was about cunnilingus. I cranked the volume, and the four of us started dancing with illicit glee. One caregiver jumped on the bed, another swung from the divider between the bedroom and the study, and Ram Dass waved his one mobile hand with bright eyes and a rascally smile.

Another day, I was alone with Ram Dass, helping him pick out a shirt. Though I spent nearly all my time in the house, I could count the hours we had been alone together on two hands, and most of them had involved food and drink, or foot massages, ostensibly to relieve the pain that he felt from diabetic neuropathy. On this day, the house was recovering from Ram Dass having been denied psilocybin owing to his health. I felt sorrow for him; the drug was, after all, the beginning of his spiritual journey more than five decades prior. I asked him if the house ever felt like a prison. A full minute of silence passed, with me standing over him in his walk-in closet. Eventually, he tapped his temple and said, “This is the prison.”

When morning broke on December 22, 2019, and Ram Dass was still alive, I allowed myself a moment of relief. Dassi Ma came up, looking short on sleep, and took his vitals. They were horrible. We snapped into action, trying to comfort Ram Dass until one of his doctors arrived.

The infection had pooled fluid in his lungs, which made every breath a burden. Wet, rattling half-breaths were punctuated by coughs of bloody mucus. He looked wrecked, but still managed a weak smile when his Chinese-medicine doctor told a joke at his bedside.

At some point, Dassi Ma and the doctor began talking in the study; other caregivers were on an oxygen-tank-and-essentials supply run. I was on one side of Ram Dass’s bed; on the other was his longtime co-author Rameshwar Das, a friend since Kainchi. Then Ram Dass started choking.

It wasn’t that different from any of the other horrible breaths he’d taken that morning, except that he just couldn’t breathe it. When he realized this, he turned to me with a look that haunts me even now: light eyes wide as quarters, mouth open, lips a bit rounded. I immediately panicked, calling for Dassi Ma and trying to get his adjustable bed as upright as possible so that he could clear his throat. Then, when that didn’t seem upright enough, I frantically tried to lug his torso up so that his head could hang over his waist; perhaps he could vomit his throat clear.

Thirty seconds had passed since he first lost his breath. Somewhere from near his feet, the doctor snapped at me: “You have to calm down!” It jolted me into an awareness that Ram Dass was dying, right there. Perhaps it did the same for Dassi Ma, because she sprang for the study, returned with a large framed photo of Neem Karoli Baba, and commanded him to focus. “Ram Dass! Maharaj-ji! Maharaj-ji!” she said, placing the photo at the foot of the bed. She told him that she loved him, that he could go. I told him that I loved him. And then Ram Dass stopped trying to breathe.

I was the only person to leave the room. Stumbling into the study, I picked up my phone, hands quivering, and sent word to the other caregivers: “RD’s dying imminently. Like within the next couple of minutes.”

The wind was screaming outside. On Maui’s North Shore, it wasn’t unusual for it to reach thirty, forty knots, rattling the windows and throwing palm fronds across the lawn. That day, it had blown from early in the morning, under a tightly woven blanket of gray clouds. Sitting in the study, I watched it bend the trees, felt the violence of it, indiscriminate.

Ram Dass believed that fear kept us from recognizing our interconnection to all things. “Change generates fear; fear generates contraction; contraction generates prejudice, bigotry, and ultimately violence,” he said. In his teachings, he often placed fear and love on opposing sides of the human experience. Fear was the by-product of the ego; love was the by-product of the soul that remained pure, in the moment, especially at the time of death. “When we are fully present,” Ram Dass wrote, “there is no anticipatory fear or anxiety because we are just here and now, not in the future.”

And yet this binary is precisely what made watching him die so disorienting. I’ve no idea what Ram Dass felt in those final moments, what he could see or hear. I don’t even really know if that was fear I saw in his eyes, though it certainly looked like it. Perhaps it was surprise or another sensation entirely, the rush of emptiness before a huge plunge into something tremendous.

Whatever it was, its existence seemed largely absent from his teachings. There were times when he acknowledged the pain and coarse brutality of death. In his book “ Still Here ” (2000), he writes:

Dying is often not easy . . . the stoppage of circulation and starving of the heart muscle . . . the inadequate transport of oxygen to tissues, the failure of organs . . . Where can we hope to stand in our own consciousness during such traumatic conditions, in order to die with clarity and grace?

Yet the emphasis he placed, over decades of lectures, on the importance of grace during death made so little space for terror—for how fear could coexist with presence, and even with love. In the minutes after his passing, the chasm between how he died and how I thought he was supposed to die reminded me of the betrayal I’d felt when, at sixteen, I flouted my mother’s and pastor’s admonitions and stopped asking God for protection, only to discover that a similar slew of terrible and wonderful things still happened to me.

In the house, too, marching through three days of death rituals before Ram Dass’s body was removed, I felt my spirituality slip its moorings. Late on the second night, his body lay on ice in his study—a rite he’d specifically requested, hoping that it would help those around him transcend their fear. I sat on the floor and peered up at his face through candlelight, his skin whitish blue and gaunt, his mouth slightly agape. I waited for grace, for him to speak reassuringly from some other plane of reality. Instead, I was taken back to our final moments together, where fear sutured me to each passing second. Not fear of the past or some uncertain future, but fear of the vast, strange intensity of what is. ♦

The Problem With Saying ‘Sex Assigned at Birth’

A black and white photo of newborns in bassinets in the hospital.

By Alex Byrne and Carole K. Hooven

Mr. Byrne is a philosopher and the author of “Trouble With Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions.” Ms. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist and the author of “T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us.”

As you may have noticed, “sex” is out, and “sex assigned at birth” is in. Instead of asking for a person’s sex, some medical and camp forms these days ask for “sex assigned at birth” or “assigned sex” (often in addition to gender identity). The American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association endorse this terminology; its use has also exploded in academic articles. The Cleveland Clinic’s online glossary of diseases and conditions tells us that the “inability to achieve or maintain an erection” is a symptom of sexual dysfunction, not in “males,” but in “people assigned male at birth.”

This trend began around a decade ago, part of an increasing emphasis in society on emotional comfort and insulation from offense — what some have called “ safetyism .” “Sex” is now often seen as a biased or insensitive word because it may fail to reflect how people identify themselves. One reason for the adoption of “assigned sex,” therefore, is that it supplies respectful euphemisms, softening what to some nonbinary and transgender people, among others, can feel like a harsh biological reality. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” is taken to be an indirect and more polite way of communicating that the person is biologically female. The terminology can also function to signal solidarity with trans and nonbinary people, as well as convey the radical idea that our traditional understanding of sex is outdated.

The shift to “sex assigned at birth” may be well intentioned, but it is not progress. We are not against politeness or expressions of solidarity, but “sex assigned at birth” can confuse people and creates doubt about a biological fact when there shouldn’t be any. Nor is the phrase called for because our traditional understanding of sex needs correcting — it doesn’t.

This matters because sex matters. Sex is a fundamental biological feature with significant consequences for our species, so there are costs to encouraging misconceptions about it.

Sex matters for health, safety and social policy and interacts in complicated ways with culture. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to experience harmful side effects from drugs, a problem that may be ameliorated by reducing drug doses for females. Males, meanwhile, are more likely to die from Covid-19 and cancer, and commit the vast majority of homicides and sexual assaults . We aren’t suggesting that “assigned sex” will increase the death toll. However, terminology about important matters should be as clear as possible.

More generally, the interaction between sex and human culture is crucial to understanding psychological and physical differences between boys and girls, men and women. We cannot have such understanding unless we know what sex is, which means having the linguistic tools necessary to discuss it. The Associated Press cautions journalists that describing women as “female” may be objectionable because “it can be seen as emphasizing biology,” but sometimes biology is highly relevant. The heated debate about transgender women participating in female sports is an example ; whatever view one takes on the matter, biologically driven athletic differences between the sexes are real.

When influential organizations and individuals promote “sex assigned at birth,” they are encouraging a culture in which citizens can be shamed for using words like “sex,” “male” and “female” that are familiar to everyone in society, as well as necessary to discuss the implications of sex. This is not the usual kind of censoriousness, which discourages the public endorsement of certain opinions. It is more subtle, repressing the very vocabulary needed to discuss the opinions in the first place.

A proponent of the new language may object, arguing that sex is not being avoided, but merely addressed and described with greater empathy. The introduction of euphemisms to ease uncomfortable associations with old words happens all the time — for instance “plus sized” as a replacement for “overweight.” Admittedly, the effects may be short-lived , because euphemisms themselves often become offensive, and indeed “larger-bodied” is now often preferred to “plus sized.” But what’s the harm? No one gets confused, and the euphemisms allow us to express extra sensitivity. Some see “sex assigned at birth” in the same positive light: It’s a way of talking about sex that is gender-affirming and inclusive .

The problem is that “sex assigned at birth”— unlike “larger-bodied”— is very misleading. Saying that someone was “assigned female at birth” suggests that the person’s sex is at best a matter of educated guesswork. “Assigned” can connote arbitrariness — as in “assigned classroom seating” — and so “sex assigned at birth” can also suggest that there is no objective reality behind “male” and “female,” no biological categories to which the words refer.

Contrary to what we might assume, avoiding “sex” doesn’t serve the cause of inclusivity: not speaking plainly about males and females is patronizing. We sometimes sugarcoat the biological facts for children, but competent adults deserve straight talk. Nor are circumlocutions needed to secure personal protections and rights, including transgender rights. In the Supreme Court’s Bostock v. Clayton County decision in 2020, which outlawed workplace discrimination against gay and transgender people, Justice Neil Gorsuch used “sex,” not “sex assigned at birth.”

A more radical proponent of “assigned sex” will object that the very idea of sex as a biological fact is suspect. According to this view — associated with the French philosopher Michel Foucault and, more recently, the American philosopher Judith Butler — sex is somehow a cultural production, the result of labeling babies male or female. “Sex assigned at birth” should therefore be preferred over “sex,” not because it is more polite, but because it is more accurate.

This position tacitly assumes that humans are exempt from the natural order. If only! Alas, we are animals. Sexed organisms were present on Earth at least a billion years ago, and males and females would have been around even if humans had never evolved. Sex is not in any sense the result of linguistic ceremonies in the delivery room or other cultural practices. Lonesome George, the long-lived Galápagos giant tortoise , was male. He was not assigned male at birth — or rather, in George’s case, at hatching. A baby abandoned at birth may not have been assigned male or female by anyone, yet the baby still has a sex. Despite the confusion sown by some scholars, we can be confident that the sex binary is not a human invention.

Another downside of “assigned sex” is that it biases the conversation away from established biological facts and infuses it with a sociopolitical agenda, which only serves to intensify social and political divisions. We need shared language that can help us clearly state opinions and develop the best policies on medical, social and legal issues. That shared language is the starting point for mutual understanding and democratic deliberation, even if strong disagreement remains.

What can be done? The ascendance of “sex assigned at birth” is not an example of unhurried and organic linguistic change. As recently as 2012 The New York Times reported on the new fashion for gender-reveal parties, “during which expectant parents share the moment they discover their baby’s sex.” In the intervening decade, sex has gone from being “discovered” to “assigned” because so many authorities insisted on the new usage. In the face of organic change, resistance is usually futile. Fortunately, a trend that is imposed top-down is often easier to reverse.

Admittedly, no one individual, or even a small group, can turn the lumbering ship of English around. But if professional organizations change their style guides and glossaries, we can expect that their members will largely follow suit. And organizations in turn respond to lobbying from their members. Journalists, medical professionals, academics and others have the collective power to restore language that more faithfully reflects reality. We will have to wait for them to do that.

Meanwhile, we can each apply Strunk and White’s famous advice in “The Elements of Style” to “sex assigned at birth”: omit needless words.

Alex Byrne is a professor of philosophy at M.I.T. and the author of “Trouble With Gender: Sex Facts, Gender Fictions.” Carole K. Hooven is an evolutionary biologist, a nonresident senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, an associate in the Harvard psychology department, and the author of “T: The Story of Testosterone, the Hormone That Dominates and Divides Us.”

Lauren Graham Remembers Late Friend Matthew Perry, Reveals His Final Birthday Gift to Her

The 'Gilmore Girls' alum called the late 'Friends' actor "a constant" in her life

Leon Bennett/Getty; Mark Sagliocco/Getty

Lauren Graham will always carry Matthew Perry in her heart.

On Friday, April 5, the Gilmore Girls alum, 57, hosted a Q&A during her Have I Told You This Already? book tour. Speaking to an audience at the Lincoln Theater during her stop in Washington, D.C., she reflected on her friendship with the late actor.

“It’s still really hard to believe,” Graham said of Perry’s death.

The Friends actor died in his Los Angeles-area home on Oct. 28, 2003, due to acute effects of ketamine, according to an autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE. He was 54.

“While he was not technically ever a boyfriend, he was an almost in my life,” Graham said, adding that Perry was also “a friend and a constant.”

“We would stretch for a year, then he would come back in my life, and he had just come back in my life last year,” she explained before sharing what Perry bought her for her birthday that March.

According to Graham, the actor had sent her “a pickleball set” for her special day. As audience members laughed, she smiled while sharing her fond memories.

“He’s like really into tennis and pickleball, with a card that said, ‘Be older,’ ” she said, calling his death “a terrible loss.”

Perry had once referred to Graham as “one of my favorite people ” during a Q&A of his own for his show The Odd Couple .

“We have great chemistry when working together and it’s fun to work with a close friend,” he said.

A photo of him and Graham appeared in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing . “Me and the beautiful Lauren Graham,” the caption read.

One month after his death, the Evan Almighty actress appeared on CBS Mornings and said of Perry: “ No one made me laugh as hard . Just tears, streaming. There was just such joy in being around him and being his friend.”

For Friday’s event, Graham shared a silver lining, noting that Perry was proud of how his book was received.

“The solace I take from having seen him at the time I saw him was he was so thrilled with how his book was received — and not just because it was a huge success, but because his life’s work kind of became, ‘How can I give back? How can I talk about the struggles I had and hopefully help someone else?'” she said.

Graham added that Perry “was so pleased” that he had been contributing in that way, which made him “really happy.”
