What peaceful hours I once enjoyed! How sweet their memory still! There is no doubt in it that a visit to a historical place is our cultural heritage. Such places are a window to our splendid part. It is certainly a wonderful experience to visit such places. These visits add a lot to our knowledge. When we visit historical places, we come to know the skill and ability of the past. Sometimes such historical places tell us true stories better than the story that is described in books on history. It is well said,

” Architecture is frozen music. “

In this modern age, we remain busy day and night like machines our minds are all the time preoccupied with the worries and responsibilities of everyday life. In this humdrum life, people become dull in soul and drab in spirit. They have confined themselves to the small stinging nooks of the offices. They feed their big bellies but do nothing for their vexed souls, life has become flat, boring and monotonous for them. They have no space-time to spend in the company of balmy nature.

We should realize the fact that life should be enjoyed with all its charms and pleasures. We should also spare some time for pleasure and recreation. I have visited many places but the place I like most is the Jahangir Tomb who was a Mughal Emperor. Sometimes such places tell us better stories than history books. A visit to a historical place is always valuable for a student. As it is well said,

“ All history is the biography of great men.”

Last Sunday, we decided to go for an outing. We planned to visit the Jahangir Tomb because we had not seen it. So we all agreed at this historical place should be visited. The Tomb of Jahangir is situated at Shahdara near Lahore. We started preparing for this visit. After two hours we reached there by bus. We were much excited. The great tomb of Jahangir was in front of our eyes. The four tall minarets of the tomb were visible from a distance۔ As we entered the gate, we saw large grassy lawns on both sides of the road. The weather was very pleasant. The parks were full of blooming flowers. They were spreading their fragrance all around. It was a very charming sight.

There were also some cool shady trees. Many birds were sitting in the twigs of there trees. They were chirping. The flower was presenting a colorful right. I am very happy about a visit to a historical place. In such type of an attractive atmosphere, I began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

” Ah, happy bough that can’t shed your leaves, Or ever bid the spring, Adel .”

There was a beautiful fountain in front of the Jahangir Tomb. It was sprinkling its light shower. The drizzling of drops produced charming music.

Then we reached the tomb itself. It is a low, large and beautiful building. In an inner room, the great Mughal Emperor sleeps. The great king was laying in his grave, silent and friendless. This was the king who led a luxurious life surrounded by courtiers.

The room was decorated with colorful designs. It is a wonderful piece of Muslim architecture. We offered “ Fateha” there.

We went up to the roof/terrace and had a view of the city of Lahore. It was a beautiful sight. The cool breeze and the deep blue sky made a magical impression on us. We came down and sat under a shady tree to take rest and had our lunch. We had some light refreshments. Soon it was evening. It was a very beautiful place. The silence and the peace of the Jahangir Tomb affected us strangely.

The death of the great king reminded us that everybody had to leave this world. There were none of his courtiers to solute him. “ On every side decamping talk, at every place is shrieking in stock.” At about 5:30 PM, we sat again under a shady tree. My mother spread the table cloth on the ground and put our things on it. Mother had prepared many tasty dishes. We took our meal and had some rest. Then we played cricket in a grassy park. It was a source of great amusement. My elder brother told me some interesting one-dotes. We sang together some national and film songs.

In the evening, we packed our belonging and made our way home. Our hearts were saturated with pleasure. I enjoyed this place very much. I have a dream to enjoy this beautiful place forever. Our minds were full of great thoughts when we left this historical place.

The tomb of Jahangir was built after the Mughal emperor’s death in 1627 and completed in 1637, in the reign of his son and successor, Shah Jahan, when the Mughal Empire held sway over the entire Indian subcontinent and Lahore was an important urban center. The emperor, a lover of nature, wished to be buried in Shahdara, until that time a precinct of pleasure gardens on the far side of the Ravi River from the fortified citadel of Lahore.

The tomb was placed in the center of a large, Persian-style garden, forming a tranquil setting for commemoration. The garden was laid out in four quadrants, based on the char bagh prototype established in Kabul under Babur, Jahangir’s ancestor and the founder of the Mughal dynasty. Each quadrant was subdivided into quadrants in turn, demarcated by water channels that symbolize the four rivers of paradise, with paved walkways laid alongside them and fountains placed at their intersections. Water from wells dug outside the perimeter was lifted onto channels that were built into the tops of the enclosure walls, and from there flowed thanks to gravity to the fountains and water channels at ground level. The tomb was placed at the principal intersection, in a single-story structure with corner minarets enclosing a white marble sarcophagus at its center. The building’s exterior is made of red sandstone with floral and other motifs inlaid in marble.

UNESCO World Heritage Candidate

The garden is accessed through a transitional space, known as the Akbari Serai, which is adjacent on its other end to the tomb of Mughal official Asif Khan, Jahangir’s brother-in-law. These monuments are part of the large collection of Mughal-era monuments that survive in Lahore, which is frequently praised as the cultural capital of Pakistan. Together, the three monuments and gardens form a candidate site for future inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Notwithstanding sporadic interventions over the years, the mausoleum structure remains in need of conservation and maintenance. The nearby river washed away the southeast part of the site as early as the nineteenth century and has often caused flooding in the garden, including a major event in 1988 when the tomb flooded for multiple days. On the other sides of the garden, Shahdara has grown into a densely populated city with houses and a cemetery built up against the perimeter wall of the site to the north and surrounding the Tomb of Asif Khan.

Through the World Monuments Watch, World Monuments Fund (WMF) collaborates with local partners to design and implement targeted conservation programs—including advocacy, planning, education, and physical interventions in the historic built environment—to improve human well-being through cultural heritage preservation.

Description

Jahangir's tomb

The Monument, a single storey structure, square in plan, consists of a platform with tall octagonal corner towers and a projecting entrance bay in the middle of each side. The exterior of the monument including the lowest stage of the towers, has a red sandstone facing with rich panel decoration inlaid with marble decorative motifs. The four corner towers, with white marble cupolas, rise in five stages to a height of 100 feet with a zigzag inlay of white and yellow marble : the building is divided into a series of vaulted compartments. The interior is embellished with floral frescoes, delicate inlay work (pietra dura) and brilliant marble intersia of various colours. The marble cenctaph with its delicate and colourful pietra dure is engraved with the ninety-nine attributes of Allah.

Asif Khan's tomb

The tomb, an octagonal structure with a high bulbous dome stands in the centre of a vast garden divided into four squares once set with reservoirs, fountains and pathways. The exterior was originally adorned with rich stone inlay work and the interior decorated with very bold stucco tracery, tile mosaic and ghalibkari. The high bulbous double dome was originally covered with marble veneering.

Akbari Sarai

The series of tombs called Akbari Sarai, is situated between the tombs of Jahangir and Asif Khan. The open courtyard of the Sarai is flanked on all sides by a raised terrace where are built rows of small cells, numbering 180, fronted with a verandah and a common open passage. The corners of the Sarai are graced by burjis. The Sarai has two stately gateways of usual Mughal style, one on the north and the other on the south. These gateways are beautifully decorated with frescoes and ghalibkari. From the decorative elements, the style of the structure and the size of bricks, the Sarai and the entrance gatoway to the tomb seem to have been built in the same period apparently parts o single building complex of Shah Jahan's Tomb. To the west of the Sarai in the middle of the row of cells is a mosque with three splendid domes. It is graced with red sandstone facing decorated with inlay work.

Jahangir's Tomb

One of the most historic figures of his time remains buried in the outskirts of the city Lahore in a place called Shahdara. Near the banks of the mighty Ravi in the northwest of the city lies the great Jahangir’s Tomb and his final resting place. Here lies the emperor was considered "one of the mightiest Princes in Asia" by Thomas Roe, the first English ambassador to the Mughal court.

This particular area has been known as one of the favorite places of Jahangir's and his wife Noor Jahan for having the true essence of the majestic Lahore. It is also said that this specific place was the point of departure for travels to and from Kashmir and Lahore prior to the construction of the tomb. The Great Jahangir died in 1672 and as per his last wish, he was fortunate enough to get buried in Dilkusha Garden. The tomb stands tall in the centre of the garden and is considered to be the "finest ornament of Lahore," and the "most magnificent edifice in the subcontinent after the Taj and the Qutub."

Construction of Jahangir's Tomb

The Jahangir's tomb is the second-most magnificent Mughal structure and was built under the observation of his wife Noor Jahan who outlived him by eighteen years but it was Jahangir’s son, Shah Jahan ascended to the throne, and ordered to build this magnificent tomb to honor his father. The mausoleum took a total of ten years to be constructed but as soon as it was built it was definitely a sight for sore eyes.

In the suburbs of Lahore, this tomb is not only a reminder of the emperor Jahangir but a forlorn reminder of their passionate relationship.  Although, there still remains confusion whether the tomb was funded by imperial treasure or by Noor Jahan but the Persian influence of Noor Jahan can be clearly seen in the structure of the tomb. It was the Empress’s outstanding vision that was the real reason that this ensemble became one of its kind.

The entire complex measures about five hundred meters and is divided among three main areas; the exterior, the gardens, and the inner chamber. The structure has a tall tower with a projecting entrance from all 4 sides. The 4 corners of the tower are 100 feet high and give a spectacular vision from a distance. Interestingly, the Mughal architects used a quadrangle design scheme at that time, which made the tomb to be further subdivided into four-part gardens.

The architecture of Jahangir’s Tomb

Surely, this historical site is an outstanding piece of Mughal Architecture. Each of these four-part gardens officially called “Chahar baghs”, have a central fountain. All the people coming in must walk in through a western gate, called the “Akbari Sarai”. As you walk through this gate, you’ll see a tiny mosque as well as a tomb dedicated to Asif Khan, Jahangir’s brother-in-law. Visually the first thing you see is the four minarets on top of the exterior. Each of these minarets measures around 100 feet in height and are made of brilliant white marble.

Admire the exquisite symmetry and geometrical perfection the ancient Mughal architects used to construct this masterful exterior. Through the beautiful garden, you can see the actual Jahangir's tomb.

The Jahangir’s Tomb was constructed in such an artistic way to give the impression of Islamic paradise on earth to the people who see it.

The Tomb is in an octagonal chamber that measures around eight meters in diameter. This has central marble on which 99 traditional attributes of Allah are written. At its foot, an inscription is written in Persian, that reads, “This is the illumined grave of His Majesty, the Asylum of Pardon, Nooruddin Muhammad Jahangir Padshah 1037 AH.”

Then further down are the bricked canals in which a number of fountains were there but ruined completely a few years back. But the tomb still has a lot to show to its visitors. Glorious and royal structure of Jahangir’s tomb is far more superior to that of Noor Jahan’s tomb. It’s sad to see that the women who stood hand in hand with the great emperor couldn’t get the same amount of respect and attention as him but she still has a tomb not too far away from Jahangir’s and you must pay a visit to this woman too! One can’t ignore the beauty of expensive marbles used in and outside the tomb.

The Jahangir’s Tomb showcases the aesthetic brilliance and artistic mindset of people in the Mughal era. It clearly shows the potential and set of skills as well as the glory and pride of Mughal rulers. The structure faced a lot of disrespect at the hands of the British and Sikh’s both who did their fair share in damaging the site but the government of Pakistan has since its establishment been dedicated to protecting all of its historical sites as it is their connection to their roots.

As you visit the Jahangir’s Tomb it has a story of its own to tell that can never be written in words. The mausoleum’s white marble walk away will give you a once in a lifetime experience.

Last summer, my friends and I sketched out a programme to visit the historical places of Lahore. As we were to set forth from Multan in the scorching heat of summer, we decided to travel by an air-conditioned bus. We packed our luggage, hurried with hysterical haste to the bus station, got on the Bus eagerly at about 10 am and reached Lahore in the twilight. We rented a well-furnished room in a hotel and after a superbly delicious dinner, we enjoyed a deep sleep. Next dawn, we got up with much gusto. We decided to visit the tomb of Jahangir. Straightaway we were ready to start off. In a hired taxi, we reached the elegant tomb in half an hour. The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented an exquisite view. A high wall and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park. The park was aromatically studded with colourful buds .and blooming flowers. The flowers “fluttering land dancing in the breeze” presented a spectacular sight. The fruit trees were blossoming. Birds perched on the twigs and boughs were twittering. Impressed by the “soft incense hanging upon the bough” and “many incense-bearing trees” I began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

“Ah, happy, happy boughs that cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu”

In front of the grand tomb, a lovely fountain was sprinkling its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops of the fountain was producing the resonance of ultimate excellence.

Soon afterwards, we entered the majestic edifice of Mughal Art containing the sepulchre of the emperor. What a life of luxury and opulence he had enjoyed; but now he was lying desolate and deserted in the sheer calm of infinity.

The walls of the room were adorned with oral and mosaic design. There were curious colourful patterns signifying the mystery of death. We offered “Fateha” and prayed to God to be Merciful and Beneficent to the departed soul. As a whole, the building is a marvellous specimen of Muslim architecture, unique and matchless in its beauty and structure.

We came up to the terrace and had a view of Lahore from there. It was a startling sight. The cool breeze, a canopy of silvery clouds over our heads and the prevailing aroma of the blooming flowers made the panorama charismatic that it had a lasting impact on our memory. We spent the rest of our time in eating the meal, drinking tea and making some of the sketches of the floral designs we had just observed in the vest chamber of the tomb. When the brightness of the day faded into the descending dusk, we hesitatingly headed home. Our minds were full of solemn thoughts, We were pondering over the mystery of death. We all agreed with Shakespeare:

“In Nature’s infinite book of secrecy A little I can read”.

We wished to visit some historical places because they are our cultural heritage. So, we chose Jahangir’s Tomb as our picnic point. We reached the tomb in the morning at 10. The weather was very pleasant.

The splendid building of the tomb was very impressive. There was greenery all around. A cool breeze was blowing. Birds were chirping in the trees. There were vast lawns, open spaces and flowers of different colours.

At about 2 o’clock, we sat under a shady tree. My mother spread the table cloth on the ground and put our things on it.  Mother had prepared many tasty dishes. We took some meal and had some rest.

Then we played cricket in a grassy park. It was a source of great amusement. My elder brother told some interesting anecdotes. We sang together some national and film songs.

In the evening, we packed our belongings and our way home. Our hearts were saturated. It was a picnic of full enjoyment and recreation.

Recently our school organized an educational trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The Taj Mahal is the most beautiful monument built in the Mughal period. It is one of the wonders of the world. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal.

This gateway of Taj Mahal is built with the use of Red Sandstone. There is a beautiful garden that begins at the main gateway and ends at the base of the monument. The building is made of pure white marble. It took twenty thousand workmen and twenty years to build. The monument is built on the bank of the river Yamuna.  It was the most beautiful building I had ever seen.

Last Sunday, we went to the Red Fort by a specially hired bus. Along the entrance two rows of shops selling various objects of art besides selling handicrafts. During the Mughal times, this was known as Meena Bazaar. After crossing the lawn, we reached the historic building known as ‘Naubat Khana’. Then we saw ‘Diwan-e-Aam’ or the Hall of Public Audience.

Then we went to the ’Rang Mahal’ which was a place of pleasures and richly inlaid with precious stones in the Mughal period. There is a ‘Khas Mahal’ beside the Rang Mahal. It has a beautiful marble screen. The Red Fort also has the War Memorial Museum where weapons used in the First World War are exhibited. We got to see many historical things that we read in our books. We enjoyed the trip very much.

My dream came true when last month our history teacher arranged a trip to Agra for us. It was 24 October when we reached there. That very afternoon we went to see the famous Taj Mahal. It is a masterpiece of architecture-all in marble. We admired the four more mosques with tall slender minarets and the huge central dome. The surroundings lend beauty to it. The mausoleum stands in the center of a big garden with marble water channels, rows of fountains, and stately cypress trees.

The tombs of Shah Jahan and his wife lie beneath the dome. We went to see the Agra Fort too. When Shah Jahan was confined there, he spent his time gazing at the mausoleum of his creation from his prison window. We saw things that we had read about in our books-the Dewan-i-Am, the Diwan-i-Khas, the Pearl Mosque, and the Shish Mahal. A visit to a place of historical importance does make history real and interesting. It was a wonderful trip.

A visit to a historical place is very educative. It instructs as well as entertains us. I am fond of visiting historical buildings. Last year, I went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal. In the evening, we went to see the Taj Mahal. I had heard a lot about the beauty of the Taj Mahal. But reality surpassed the descriptions that had been given to me.

It is a wonder in marble, a specimen of Mughal art. Taj Mahal was built by Shah Jahan in the sweet memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It was built about three hundred and fifty years ago.  It stands on the right bank of the river Yamuna. The gateway which is made of red stone is very beautiful. The garden is very lovely. The tall dark cypress trees, smooth green lawns, and the beds of flowers are pleasing to the eyes. The fountains flow here and there.

The main building is made of white marble. It stands on a raised platform. At its four corners, there are four stately towers. Inside the tomb, Emperor Shah Jahan and his beloved Mumtaz Mahal lie buried side by side. This monument tells us about the expertise of the artists and craftsmen of that era. The visit to the Taj Mahal was a wonderful experience for us. It was both enjoyable and educational.

Historical hallmarks, distinct deeds of genius, accomplished achievements of people; admirable accomplishments of individuals, and cultivation of art collectively constitute the culture of a nation. Culture is the radiance that casts its luster on every sphere of life. It is the fiery fervor to enhance enlightenment.

Culture is the passion for sweetness and light, and the passion for making them prevail.

Pakistani culture, though replete with all these attractive attributes are outstandingly exceptional for its marvelous historical heritage The most startling and spectacular superiority of our culture is pleasurable of Muslim Architecture. And the historical places are the esteemed and exalted emblems of Muslim Culture in Pakistan.

A fortnight ago, my mates and I planned an entertaining excursion. We decided to explore the sheltered mystery of the historical places of Lahore. We finalized our program in a trice. First of all, we decided to visit the legendary tomb of Jahangir. We hired a taxi and reached the elegant tomb without any hitch.

The four magnificent minarets of the tomb presented a stunning sight. They looked like eagle-eyed guards to shield the terrific tomb. Lofty walls and an elegantly decorated big gate guarded the mausoleum of the great emperor. The tomb occupies the heart of a fragrant park.

The park was studded with blooming buds and fragrant flowers. Evenly spaced, thickly growing tall trees with big and lush green shoots (04) enriched the beauty of the place. The flowers” fluttering and dancing in the breeze” presented a spectacular sight. The fruit trees were blossoming.

The swaying twigs of trees, the leaves, the twittering birds, and the whistling wind created an impact of a sanctified place. Impressed by the “soft incense hanging upon the boughs” and “many incense-bearing trees.” l began to sing the beautiful verses of Keats:

Ah, happy, happy boughs that cannot shed Your leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu

In front of the great tomb, a lovely fountain was spreading its light shower. The drizzling of hoary drops of the fountain produced ultimate excellence. Summing up in the words of S.T. Coleridge, it was

A savage place, holy and enchanted.

Soon afterward, we entered the majestic mausoleum of Mughal Art containing the grave of the emperor. What a life of luxury and abundance he had enjoyed, but now he was lying alone and deserted in the sheer calm of infinity.

Oh, threats of Hell and Hopes of paradise! One thing at least is certain-This Life flies.

The walls of the room were adorned with floral designs. There were curious colorful patterns signifying death. We offered “Fateha” and prayed to Allah to be Merciful and Beneficent to the departed soul. As a whole, the building is a marvelous specimen of Muslim architecture, and is matchless in its beauty and structure.

We came up to the top of the tomb and had a beautiful spectacle of Lahore from there. It was a startling scene. The balmy breeze, fluffy clouds floating in the firmament, the sun hiding behind a flimsy veil of clouds, and the prevailing aroma of the blooming flowers made the panorama so charismatic that it had a lasting impact on our memory.

Then we descended the stairs and sat under a huge shady tree in the park. We spent the rest of our time eating meals, drinking tea, and making some sketches of the floral designs we had just observed in the vast chamber of the tomb.

When the brightness of the day faded into the descending dusk, we hesitatingly headed home. Our minds were full of solemn thoughts. we were pondering over the mystery of death. We all agreed with Shakespeare;

Visits provide a chance to enjoy life; celebrate happy moments and break the monotony of routine life. A visitor a picnic is the best way of enjoying life in the best possible way by breaking the barriers of boredom. A picnic or a visit opens the door of pleasant change to individual and group life.

Holidays especially weekends are always enjoyable as they provide us blessed breaks to change hard routines. They are also a source of enjoyment and relaxation. Holidays are always a welcome change. The best way to make use of time is to travel to the best places of pleasure and charm. Therefore, visits to certain great and important places are really very useful in many ways.

I always enjoy visits to historical places very much. It is my routine to visit and go for a picnic with my family and friends whenever find free time and get a chance to do so. Last Sunday, when the One-week Mid-Term holidays started our group of friends decided to visit the historical Qasim Bagh at Multan. The very idea was so exciting and pleasant. The beauties of Nature are a blessing.

The plan and program regarding the date, day, time and mode of traveling were finalized. Different duties of arrangements were assigned to different persons. At last, the day and time approached. We had planned to gather at the college gate. So, on the fixed time we all gathered at the college gate. All the arrangements were perfect.

The bus was new, beautiful, and comfortable. The weather was very fine and fit for pleasure trip. The boys were dressed in colorful dresses. They were all in very gay moods and high spirits. They were talking to each other excitedly and making their individual plans to make it a memorable trip. All in all, it was an ideal day for a visit to a historical place.

The journey started very early in the morning as it is a tradition of traveling to start journey as early as possible. The mellow sunshine, the cool breeze, and above all the scene of sunrise was amazing. The journey is always noisy and loud. Everyone was sitting with his best friend. During the journey, we sang songs, raised slogans, and shared gossip and jokes. After a journey of two hours, we reached Qasim Bagh . We went straight to the office of the in-charge of Qasim Bagh. He welcomed us with open arms. He gave us tickets and all the necessary information about the great Qasim Bagh.

We started our visit from the main gate (Bab-e-Qasim). It was beautifully built and maintained and reflected the grandeur of ancient architecture. By just watching the gate the glory and the greatrešs of iš history brightened the corridors of our minds. All the parts were integrated symmetry. The beautiful image, the typical atmosphère arid the unique history cast a spell on us. It was a splendid combination of old and modern art of construction. On the one side, it reflected the historical aspect of Muhammad Bin Qasim.

On the other side, it showed us the religious Supremacy of the great Saints like Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya, Hazrat Shah Rukn-e-Alam, and many other friends of Almighty ALLAH. First of all, we went to the tombs of the saints and offered Fateha. Then we went to the historical highest point known as Damdama. We viewed the whole city from that top. It was a unique view.

We walked along the lush green areas. We got tired We rested at the public park. We sat there for half an hour and chatted. Then we felt hungry and took our lunch. Some of our friends suggested playing a cricket match. Soon, it started raining. We loved it very much. Rain and cricket have a Wonderful relation. Though we all got wet but we enjoyed it. This beautiful shower in summer on a Sunday was Worth enjoying.

Then we again decided to visit other parts of Qasim Bagh. It has many charming things to offer. This visit added to our knowledge. We have never seen or heard many things about Qasim Bagh.

We spent almost six hours at Qasim Bagh. We enjoyed the great scene, hustle, and bustle, and spicy and tasty foodstuff available there. The whole visit was very charming. Each and everything was printed on our minds. We also did some shopping. We purchased charming gifts and decoration pieces. We returned home with sweet and enjoyable memories of this wonderful visit. No doubt such days are rare and unforgettable.

A Visit to a Historical Place Essay- 500 Words

Pakistan has a grand historic past. She is famous for her historical places, monuments and buildings. Mahon-jo-Daro and Harrapa are the oldest centers of civilization. The other historical centres are Bambore, Maklee, Thatta, Lahore, Multan and Texila. They attract thousands of foreign tourists every year.

A visit to a historical place is a unique experience full of wonders and awe. Last year I and a company of friends visited Lahore. Like Dehli, Lahore had been the seat of the Mogul rulers, a centre of Muslim culture. Centre always implies excellence. We stayed in the provincial capital for a week. Lahore offers a great variety of tourists and visitors. It is full of parks, running fountains and greenery.

The greatest attractions are the historical places- the Lahore Fort, the Shalimar Gardens, the grand Badshahi Mosque, the Tombs of Jahangir and Noor Jahan, the beauty queen. The Hiran Minar at Shakbupara tells of the strange story of the great love of the emperior for his deer.

First I visited the Fort. It is a wonderful specimen of Mogul architecture. The Sheesh Mahal and Diwan-e-Aam reminded us of the past glory. I was transported into the past and felt myself part and parcel of the scene. The grand Shah Jahan Mosque with its spacious yards and bara-darees, in red stone, made us spellbound. I went up the imposing minaret and saw a bird-eye of the city. 

The next day we drove the Shalimar Gardens and Tombs of Jahangir and his Queen. It was the spring season. The old trees in blossoms, the colorful smiling flowers and the running fountains gave a good feast to our eyes. We descended the well where the green enjoyed scented baths. The well is renowned for it’s half hot, and half cold water. From the canopy, I surveyed the scene like a prince.

The beautiful tomb of Emperior Jahanghir in marble and aplic work depicted Mogul tastes. The surrounding ministerial annexes and towers were in bad shape. The gardens were well maintained. But the Tomb of Queen Noor Jahan presented an humble picture. It reminded me of Gray’s famous line

“The paths of glory lead but to the grave.”

On the third day we visited the historical museum and Hinar Minar. A few could climb it. We enjoyed boating in the tank and snacks in the garden. We did not fail to see the Lahore Zoo. Fatima Jinnah garden, Iqbal Park and Nawaz Shareef Park. The most impressive scene was the Racecourse park with colourful winking fountains during the night and an artificial water fall.

At last we enjoyed a picnic in the newly built Bara-Daee across the Ravi. As we stood on the bank and said goodbye, the river seemed to whisper to us:

“For man many came and man may go; But I go on for ever”.

The weather was very pleasant.

The splendid building of the tomb was very impressive. There was greenery all around. A cool breeze was blowing. Birds were chirping in the trees. There were vast lawns, open spaces, and flowers of different colours.

  Jahangir’s Tomb is the best place for a family picnic. There, we enjoyed ourselves very much. Everyone was taking interest in the remarkable structure of the building, the matchless beauty of the lawns and the historical significance of the Tomb.

At about 2 o’clock, we sat under a shady tree. My mother spread the table cloth on the ground and put our things on it.  Mother had prepared many tasty dishes. We took some meals and had some rest.

Then we played cricket in a grassy park. It was a source of great amusement. My elder brother told some interesting anecdotes. We sang together some national and film songs.

In the evening, we packed our belongings and our way home. Our hearts were saturated. It was a picnic of full enjoyment and recreation.

The historical places, no doubt, are beautiful objects. They are a source of pleasure, joy and comfort. They are treasures ( خزانہ ) of our past. They reflect our past history. A visit to some historical place is always valuable for a student. It enriches ( بڑھانا ) his knowledge and increases his vision. There are many historical places in Pakistan.

I happened to visit Jehangir’s Tomb last Sunday. I reached the tomb by bus. The splendid building of the tomb was before my eyes.

On entering the gate, I saw spacious ( وسیع ) lawns on either side of the road. The flowers were fluttering and dancing in the breeze. The soft incense ( مہک ) was coming from the boughs. Keats has rightly sung for such a splendid scene:

Ah happy, happy boughs that cannot shed

Young leaves, nor ever bid the spring adieu.         

The grand building was surrounded by open lawns. There were green grassy plots with fountains on either side of the canal. Cypress ( سرو ) and other trees added to its charm. Its four great minarets stood like watchmen. There were flowers of different colours and kinds. All the plants and flowers were in their bloom.

I marched on towards the right. Soon, I reached the main building which was very beautiful to look at. It was constructed with white marbles. Around it, there was a wall of red stones. The tomb was in the centre of the building.

In the inner room of the tomb, sleeps the great Mughal Emperor Jehangir. The walls of this room have curious ( متجسّس ) and coloured designs on them. I was greatly surprised to see the craftsmanship of the stone cutters and artisans of Mughal times.

The huge mausoleum ( مزار ) had a vast terrace ( چبوترہ ). In each corner, a minaret soared up in the sky. I went up to one of the towers and from there I could see the lofty ( بلند مرتبہ ) building of Badshahi Masjid. The whole city of Lahore was before my eyes. The river Ravi appeared to be no more than a silvery line. I came down and offered fateha at the grave of the great Mughal King.

As I offered fateha, I was filled with great reverence ( احترام ) and love for the mighty king. I felt that the paths of glory lead but to the grave. The emperor lay forgotten in his grave. There were none of his courtiers to salute him. I came home burdened with feelings of sorrow and gloom. The futility and aimlessness of life stood exposed before me. How beautifully James Shirley has depicted ( تصویرکھینچنا ) the picture of the futility of life:

The glories of our blood and state

Are shadows, not substantial things;

There is no armour against fate;

Death lays its cruel hand on kings.

Last Sunday we went to Jahangeer Tomb for a picnic. It was a pleasant day. It was neither hot nor cold. My mother cooked very delicious ( مزیدار ) dishes to eat there. They were in small steel pots so that we might heat them there. We also took a lot of fruit with us. We left home at 9 o’ clock in the morning. The sun was shining brightly but it was not hot. We hired a taxi and reached the tomb at 10. The tomb is built on acres of land and is surrounded by very thick walls. There are big gardens all-round the tomb.

  As we entered the main gate, we were greatly impressed by the greenery and beauty of the surrounding area. There were many shady places. As we entered another gate we saw the tomb just before our eyes. The colour and texture ( بناوٹ ) of the tomb caught our eyes. We saw many English and European tourists there. They were taking pictures of the tomb. Its unique ( منفرد ) design attracts a lot of foreign tourists every year. We went inside the tomb and said ‘Fatiha’. After that, we went to a corner of the garden. The mother took out a sheet of cloth and spread it on the ground to sit on. Then she started heating the food in a portable gas oven. We helped her in setting the plates on the sheet. After that, we enjoyed a big delicious meal in a very pleasant atmosphere. It was our first experience of eating outside in the open. We were sitting in a circle and felt very excited while eating.

After enjoying a good hearty meal, we played for some time. I saw some boys playing cricket in the gardens. They were making a lot of noise. To my right, a family was playing some indoor game. Everybody was so relaxed and happy. They were enjoying themselves. After that, we went around the tomb. It was amazing to see so much greenery around. There was a tall tree in the garden. Flowers of different colours were adding to the beauty of the tomb. There was no pollution in the city and no noise from the horns and rickshaws.

         After some time we returned home more happy and fresh. I think it is a good idea to go for a picnic once in a while. It has a good effect on our body and mind. I will remember my visit to the Jahangir Tomb forever.
