Facebook for iOS review: The best way to look at Facebook on the go
New photo-sharing features and a clean layout make the official app the best on mobile for staying in touch on Facebook.
Editors' note: This review has been updated to give more information about photo sharing features rolled out on October 27.
Facebook for iOS
The bottom line.
The Facebook app for iOS lets you browse the popular social-networking site on your iPhone or iPad. The app just got updated with some new features that make it easier to share photos, but recent updates made it run much faster than earlier versions, offering quicker ways to browse through friends' pages, statuses and photos.
While the app is still the best way to browse the social network, the removal of the Messaging portion into a separate app is an inconvenient change for a lot of users. Still, for browsing and posting statuses, it's the go-to app on smartphones, and Facebook continues to release updates that make the app better.
Facebook's interface makes it easy to stay connected (pictures)
Navigating the app
Across the bottom of the interface, you have buttons to look at your news feed, one to look at friend requests, a chat bubble that opens Facebook Messenger (more on this later) and a globe for notifications. A "More" button to the right of that opens up the sidebar where you can get all the same functions that you would on the Web site. Here you can touch to browse the News Feed, Messages, nearby check-ins, events, groups and any Facebook apps you might use. On your news feed, you have buttons at the top of your feed that you can tap to post a status, add a photo, or check in to a location.
One of the best things about Facebook is the interface for browsing photos. Just tap on a friend's Photos link and you quickly get all of his photo folders. From there you can just tap on a folder to browse. When you view a photo from a folder full-screen, you can swipe sideways to move on to the next picture and swipe up or down to return to the folder. You also can quickly upload a photo from your library or snap a new picture to upload with your iPhone or iPad.
Better photo sharing
In a recent update, Facebook is making it easier to share multiple photos from your phone, just tap the Photo option on the news feed to get started. Facebook will show you all of the photos on your phone or tablet, with the most recent ones at the top. Tap any and all photos you want to upload and you'll see a number on each image, which corresponds to the order in which it will be uploaded and displayed in your post. Once you're done picking your photos, you can rearrange or delete them, add individual captions, tag friends, and add a description to the entire photo set. If you want to add them to an album, you can do that too, but they'll all be added to your Mobile Uploads album automatically.
When you share your photo post, you'll see a collage of your pictures in the news feed. Tap on the collage to open a new page with all of the full-size images, where you can add comments, or like each photo.
All of these elements are laid out to make your most-used actions on Facebook both easy to carry out and much faster than in older versions of the app.
Recent updates added the Share button, more tagging features, and a button for sorting your News Feed to get the stories you want. Tagging features let you tag friends in any post, comment, or photo. Other minor tweaks brought bigger Like, Comment, and Share buttons below each post in your News Feed.
Find your friends
Nearby Friends lets you see which friends are nearby so you can potentially meet up. Using GPS, it shows the approximate location of your friends, grouped by city. It's similar to Apple's Find My Friends feature, which uses your phone's contacts and GPS to plot your friends and family's location on a map.
In order to use it, you need to enable the feature in the More tab, under Nearby Friends -- Facebook will not automatically turn on this feature for you. You can also turn it on by touching the icon at the top-right of the app, which looks like a person with three lines behind it. That'll open your chat list, and at the top, there's a section for Nearby Friends.
After you've gone through the short setup process, you'll see a list of other friends using Nearby Friends, and their approximate locations. It'll say what city they're in and a general location, such as a neighborhood, if available. You'll see how far away, in miles, they are from you, and how long ago, in minutes, they were in that area.
Great experience on the iPad
Last year the iPad version was redesigned with more thought toward how iPad users consume content. The main News Feed has more white space, less dividers, and standardized fonts that are more easily readable on the larger screen.
The Facebook app takes into account the larger viewing area on the iPad, displaying stories in your News Feed with larger images and more text than you'll find in the iPhone version. What results is not a sea-change for iPad users, but simply a cleaner, more efficient use of space to take advantage of the larger iPad screen.
Instant messaging
Facebook removed all instant messaging features from the main app, forcing you to use its separate Messenger app to chat with your friends. There is still a tab for your message inbox in the app, but you if you open it, you can only see a page telling you that you'll need to download Facebook Messenger to send or receive messages on your phone.
Also, if you use Facebook's Wi-Fi calling, you can no longer do that from the Facebook app and will need to download Messenger.
The Facebook app offers a smooth experience for browsing the social-networking site on the go. With an intuitive interface; a sleeker, more efficient design that takes advantage of the larger screen on the iPad; the power to make free calls over Wi-Fi and new ways to share photos, this is the best version of the app yet.
With that said, Messages is now a separate app that's fine as a chat client, but not exactly convenient if you need to open a separate app to communicate. It also means that when you're done chatting, you'll need to reopen the Facebook app to continue browsing.
Still, even with the inconveniences the messaging portion of the app causes, the official Facebook app is great for browsing your friends statuses and posting your own. If you like Facebook, the official app is still the best way to stay connected with the social network.

It is always essential to get feedback from your audience. Fortunately, the internet has made it easier than ever to get user feedback within the App Store and Play Store itself.
And responding to these reviews – be they positive or negative – shows your customers that you value their opinions.

According to research, 97% of people who read reviews will read responses as well. So, before you give cold responses to your customers that scare them, kindly read on.
This blog will uncover how to give the best reply to reviews in the App Store.

It's always recommended to include the user's name in your response. This will show them how much their one review means to you and that you value the time they took to provide valuable feedback. You can either tag the account directly in your response or simply write their first name if their username does not include their name.
Respond as soon as possible, even to your positive reviews. Don't leave your customer's positive review hanging without a response for too long while you keep resolving the issue of negative ones.
You want to ensure that you are a good communicator and respond in time, so your customers know that you are a responsive brand that cares about its customer's opinions.
Responding promptly is especially recommended if the user asks for something in their reviews or addresses a complaint. While you try to respond to your customer's reviews, don't forget to maintain your brand voice and tone in your responses.
You don't have to get into great detail when responding to a positive review. Remember that the reviewers are not expecting a detailed response either. They only need acknowledgment. Respond with what you feel is appropriate and required for the review to resolve.
Positive reviews with suggestions should be taken extra seriously. If the reviewer has provided suggestions for improvement in their positive review, feel free to respond with your thoughts on how you plan to act on those suggestions.
One of the best ways to show gratitude and respect for positive reviews is to include your business values in your review reply. It can be achieved by highlighting the things that make your business unique. Perhaps your services are top-notch with guaranteed satisfaction, or your business prides itself in offering the best products at affordable prices.
It should be conveyed positively, as it can go a long way in helping other potential customers make their decision on where they want to spend their money.
Be honest in your replies about the problems or concerns the reviewer has brought up. Try to be positive and encourage users to keep coming back or share their suggestions. You can also reply with how you plan on addressing those concerns in the future.
Be informed about how you will improve, and be patient. Positive reviews will not appear overnight. Many users may take some time to write a positive review – some take days, months, or years before writing a review.
Bonus Content: 10+ Ways To Get More Reviews For Your Business
If a user has just posted a good review of your business, it means that they are pleased with your services. Now, you have the perfect opportunity to call them to a specific action.
For instance, if the user's review is about the quality of your app, you could ask them to update it, so they get access to new features. Or, if they have mentioned they want to tell other people about their experience with your brand, you could ask them to leave a review on other sites like Yelp, Google, or Facebook.
Your users have done their part. So you should too. After all, that's what reviews are meant for.
One of the best ways to use your positive reviews is to encourage more customers to share their reviews. This can be done by showing your customer reviews to your other customers.
Sharing positive reviews on social media is a great way to get the word out. You can take screenshots of positive reviews from the App Store and post them on your Instagram Story or as a testimonial on your website for potential clients to see.

Take Responsibility
Don't pick a fight, take the conversation in private, take actions to resolve negative reviews, offer a token of gratitude, ask to update negative reviews.
Apologize to your customer. Provide an outline of your brand's steps to address its complaint. Not every customer complaint will have a resolution, nor will every complaint be your fault, but simply acknowledging a customer's negative experience with your business goes a long way.
Bonus Content: 3 Ways To Get Google Reviews Deleted [Always Work]
Although negative reviews may be confrontational, disrespectful, and even rude, your response shouldn't be. Avoid escalating the situation or exacerbating the public confrontation by maintaining a professional and helpful tone at all times.
Take the conversation to another platform once you have left a thoughtful public response on the App Store. Resolving your customer's issue may require their personal information, login details, or a lengthy back-and-forth conversation, all of which are best kept out of a public forum like the App Store.
Ensure you provide a direct point of contact in your response and expect to receive a private message from the customer. If they don't reach out, that means they most likely complained just for the sake of complaining, and their issue isn't a pressing concern.
Begin your private conversation with a brief apology. Remain sympathetic and polite as you ask the user for more details about their complaint. Explain in detail what you will do to make up for their unfavorable experience.
Just a heartfelt apology may not be enough to change a negative review to a positive one. However, if you resolve the customer's complaint, they are much more likely to change their negative opinion of your brand. In fact, almost 70% of customers who complain about a company will do business again if they act to resolve their problem.
Once you understand the customer's issue, consult with the department best equipped to handle it. For instance, if there's a technical glitch in your app, forward the complaint to your product or engineering team. Stay in contact with the customer. Let them know when their issue has been resolved. Similarly, if the complaint is about customer service, get in touch with your customer support team to resolve the matter amicably.
Bonus Content: How To Outsmart Fake Negative Reviews On Google My Business
Consider offering your customers an additional show of appreciation once you have resolved their issue. For instance, if you made a clear error in your app that caused the users to lose their valuable time or productivity, compensate them with a discount or extended trial.
With that being said, don't send gifts to every customer who voices a negative opinion about your brand. You don't want to reward negative reviews. You don't even want your giveaways to seem like an empty gesture. Your priority should be to fix the customer's problem. When it's appropriate, take an extra step to make things right.
Your first instinct may be to remove or hide negative reviews once they have been resolved. But here's the thing - your prospects want to see negative reviews. Check out these statistics:
- 72% of B2B buyers say negative reviews give insight into a product.
- 40% of B2B buyers claim that negative reviews help build credibility for a product.
- 95% of consumers are suspicious of fake reviews if there are no bad scores.
Rather than asking for a review to be taken down, ask your customers to update their review once you have resolved their issue. An updated review is clear evidence of your commitment to fixing mistakes and helping unsatisfied customers.

Use iphone app Moscow Metro to get around
The metro is not as scary as you think. Download the application on your iphone called Moscow Metro and it gives you an interactive map and plans your journey, in English. You can obtain a metro map usually from the hotel you are staying in Russian and then cross reference with the English app.
Go on a tour of the metro and explore the stations. An organised one is best to get the full experience. Don't forget to look at all the ceilings
I taught English for one month in Moscow and had the pleasure of riding this everyday. Muscovites complain that it is overcrowded, the doors close quickly and without mercy, and that it's really no big deal. Although mostly true, as a tourist, I think it has the most beautiful subway stations of any city in Europe I have ever visited. It is also the largest Metro I have ever ridden. Also, its subway trains are 3 times as long as trains in other cities and, thus, its stations are huge. I decided to spend a whole day in the Metro with my SLR camera and a tripod. I then learned that you are not allowed to take photos with a tripod, and was told this at 5 different stations, in Russian of course, which I could not understand. However, they didn't kick me out, arrest me, ask for bribes, nor inform guards at other stations. So do this at your own risk! As a tourist you will likely use the Metro, but if not, you should try to check it out. It's extremely cheap to ride. The best stations are the circle line stations, plus others such as Ploschad Revolyutsii, Mendeleevskaya, and Baumanskaya.
You will be blown away by the beauty of the metro stations-just make sure to stay clear of peak-times (I'd advise to visit it on weekend mornings). Whatever your preferred style may be,you'll find it underground (Slavyanskiy Boulevard for art nouveau, Volokolamskaya for new-age gothic, Park Pobedi for spacious geometry, Kievskaya,Komsomolskaya, the entire circle line for palace-like interiors and incredible mosaics, Rimskaya for all things roman, Belorusskaya for an obscene gate to heaven, Ploshad Revolutsii for statues,Mayakovskaya for elegant sovietism,Trubnaya because it's remarkably pretty) Plus it's a striking encyclopedia of Russian history, with stations marking the most important events and people. There are so many legends and curiosities in the metro that I would advise to take a guided tour -however,wandering around on your own is fun, too. Also it's a very romantic date spot (trust me on this one)) A must-visit in Moscow!
The art and architecture of the stations is interesting and the system is easy to manage once you work out how to interpret the cyrillic script, and there are plenty of other tourists.
Each station has its unique beauty and architecture. I like station named Park Cuture the most. Though the trains seem old but the stations themselves are masterpieces

Spotify's second iOS app update attempt in EU fails to pass App Store review
Spotify's app in the EU
Apple has already made a number of changes to its App Store rules, primarily to comply with EU legislation like the Digital Markets Act. While Apple has laid out new rules developers must follow to perform specific actions, not all apps have gone down the correct route.
An App Review email sent to Spotify and viewed by AppleInsider states that version 8.9.33 of Spotify's app was halted from publication to the App Store.
The email explains that Apple created a Music Streaming Services Entitlement for the European Economic Area storefronts, affecting iOS and iPadOS music streaming apps. The entitlement allows streaming services to use external links, buttons, and calls to action to drive users to a developer's website, so they could make a purchase outside of Apple's In-App Purchase mechanism.
Below is the entire text of what we've seen. We have authenticated its provenance.
Hello team at Spotify We are reaching out to let you know about new information regarding your app, Spotify - Music and Podcasts, version 8.9.33. As you may be aware, Apple created a new Music Streaming Services Entitlement (EEA) for iOS and iPadOS music streaming apps offered in EEA storefronts. The entitlement allows music streaming apps to use buttons, external links, or other calls to action to direct customers to a purchase mechanism on a website owned or controlled by the developer. You must accept its terms before adding any of these capabilities to your app. Please find more information about the entitlement here. We note that your current submission includes a call to action to purchase a Spotify subscription on your website. As such, you must accept the terms of the Music Streaming Services Entitlement (EEA) and include the entitlement profile in your app for submission. To be clear, this entitlement is required even if your app does not include an external link (nor does it require that you offer an external link). We will, however, approve version 8.9.33 after you accept the terms of the Music Streaming Services Entitlement (EEA) and resubmit it for review. If you have any questions about this information, please reply to this message to let us know. Best regards, App Review
Before developers can add those links and buttons, they must accept the terms of the Music Streaming Services Entitlement (EEA) and add the entitlement profile as part of the App Store review submission.
While Apple hasn't allowed version 8.9.33 into the storefront just yet, it's not completely rejected. The App Review team does say that the update can be resubmitted after Spotify accepts the terms of the entitlement.
It is unclear if the app will be blocked in other territories, but since it is an EEA-specific issue, it should be allowed elsewhere.
Spotify has previously complained about Apple's lengthy delays in reviewing updates submitted to the App Store. In March, Spotify complained that Apple had failed to respond about the app update after nine days of waiting.
What is the Music Streaming Services Entitlement
According to Apple's developer support pages , the entitlement means streaming services can include a link to a developer-owned website that can advise of other ways to purchase digital goods or services. In short, instead of using the In App Payments process, the app can instead take payment from their own purchasing system.
To qualify for the entitlement, the app must primarily offer music streaming services, have selected Music as their primary app category, and be available in the iOS and iPadOS App Store for an EEU storefront.
The app also must not use the StoreKit External Link Account Entitlement profile, which is effectively the same thing for other app types. The app also cannot participate in the Video Partner Program or News Partner Program.
Apps must pay Apple a commission of 27% on purchases made through this alternative process. This is slightly lower than the usual 30% fee for direct App Store payments.
However, if the app is a participant in the Small Business Program, or the transaction is an auto-renewal in the second year or later of an auto-renewing subscription, the commission drops to 12%.

Most people are tending to download or purchase apps, as a result of globally spreading technologies and smartphone usability. The Google Play Store app market is one of the most famous and rapidly increasing app markets and it captured the users’ thoughts, feelings, and, opinions about the appropriate apps they used. It is helpful for new users, app developers, and app creators to gain insights into the existing audience's opinion about relevant apps. Therefore, this study mainly aims to perform sentiment analysis on Google Play Store app users’ reviews based on the 15 latest apps. We collected 33,000 user reviews and implemented a machine-learning algorithms after initially pre-processing the data and extracting features through Term Frequency—Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) vectorizer tool. The Artificial Neutral Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms were used for the comparison of results. By applying these algorithms, users’ reviews are mainly categorized into neutral, positive, and negative in each app separately. The overall results show that LSTM outperformed both ANN, and SVM and had a greater accuracy, recall, f-measure, and lowest error rates across all apps for providing valuable insights for sentiment classification. According to the outcomes, LSTM produces the best sentiment analysis outcomes for keeping track of users' app reviews. Affirming 80–90% accuracy in each Apps, the outcomes reinforce the all model's validity in understanding user attitudes, consolidating the method's effectiveness. The results useful for new app users and app developers to taking their decisions.
