IELTS Global Warming Essay

This model answer is for an  IELTS global warming essay .

You are asked in the question to discuss the causes of global warming and possible solutions for individuals and the government.

Here is the question:

Global warming is one of the most serious issues that the world is facing today.

What are the causes of global warming and what measures can governments and individuals take to tackle the issue?

Three Tasks

You must answer these three things in order to fully answer it:

• What are the causes of global warming?
• What can governments do about it?
• What can individuals do about it?

This essay has been divided into two paragraphs. However, you could write a separate paragraph about each of the above points if you wanted.

Take a look at the model answer and examine how it has been organized.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own experience or knowledge.

Write at least 250 words.

IELTS Global Warming Essay - Model Answer

Probably the most worrying threat to our planet at the present time is global warming. This essay will examine the reasons why global warming is occurring and discuss some possible solutions.

The predominant factors resulting in the warming of the earth are the emissions of CO2 and deforestation. CO2, which damages the ozone layer, comes from several sources, but the most problematic are those coming from the burning of fossil fuels from power plants. This releases thousands of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every year. Another cause of these emissions is the burning of gasoline for transportation, which continues to grow because of our demand for cars and also our increasing worldwide consumption, resulting in an escalating need to transport goods. Also, forests store large amounts of carbon, so deforestation is causing larger amounts of CO2 to remain in the atmosphere.

Nevertheless, there are potential ways to solve these problems, or at least reduce the effects. Firstly, governments need to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and promote alternatives. Plant-derived plastics, biodiesel, wind power and solar power are all things that are a step in the right direction, but governments need to enforce the limits on CO2 emissions for the polluting industries in their countries for these to be effective. Also, individuals can play a part by making lifestyle changes. People should try to buy cars with the best fuel economy, and only use their car when really necessary. They can also switch to energy companies that use renewable energy rather than fossil fuels. Finally, small things like buying energy efficient light bulbs, turning off electricity in the house, and planting trees in the garden can help.

To conclude, although global warming is a serious issue, there are steps that governments and individuals can take to reduce its effects. If we are to save our planet, it is important that this is treated as a priority for all concerned.

Task 2 globalisation essay questions are very common in the IELTS exam.  Before we get into looking at globalisation task 2 examples, there’s a small point to make about spelling. Recently, a student asked me, ‘What is the difference between globalization and globalisation?’ The answer is, not much. Either spelling is acceptable, the only difference is that spelling it with an s is generally preferred in the UK, while the word is more commonly spelt with a z in the USA. All you need to do is be consistent, meaning that if you use the word more than once in your answer, spell it the same way both times. In order to be fair, we will write the next part of the article using the z spelling.

What  exactly  is Globalization?

Globalization is  a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world a more connected and interdependent place . Globalization also captures in its scope the economic and social changes that have come about as a result.

So, any globalization essay in IELTS could mention the term directly or talk about jobs or technology. A globalization writing task 2 gives you a lot of scope for using less common phrases to talk about the world. ( With the rapid development of the global economy…. ). When you look at the globalization task 2 example questions below, think first about how you might answer them and then look at the sample answers for more hints and ideas.

Some people believe that the most important aspect of their job is their salary. Others think that the job itself is the most important. What do you think is the most important aspect of a job? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

Global warming: Band nine problem and solution essay

IELTS examiners love to ask questions about global warming and environmental change. That means that you should do what you can to prepare yourself by practicing writing on this topic. You should also check out this band nine model answer and our guide, including vocabulary, to why it is a band nine.

Band nine sample essay

What are the causes of global warming and what can governments do to stop it .

The climate crisis presents humanity with some of the direst circumstances it has known. In this essay, I will, first, explore how petrol-burning transportation has helped cause this crisis and how encouraging alternative means of transport can help to solve it. 

To begin, people using petrol-powered vehicles, such as cars and aeroplanes, to get about can cause global warming. This is because when these fuels are burned, they release gasses which increase the amount of heat which is absorbed by the planet. For example, someone taking an intercontinental flight can release as many harmful emissions as an average person uses in a year. Likewise, even short trips around town in a car can, when taken regularly, do serious damage to the environment. These emissions can cause a vicious cycle as when the planet warms, ice melts and releases more trapped gasses, further increasing global warming. 

However, governments can encourage alternatives to these gas guzzlers. If governments improve local public transport, they can drastically reduce the number of people who take short trips by car. Similarly, by making train travel more affordable, they can encourage people to avoid short-haul flights. For instance, as long as a trip from London to Edinburgh, a journey of 400 miles, is far cheaper by plane than by train, the government cannot expect people to avoid this damaging route. 

To conclude, transportation which uses fossil fuels is a major cause of global warming. However, the use of these vehicles is often avoidable and governments can work to counteract this by making other modes of transport more enticing. 

Why is this essay band nine? 

There are a few ways of approaching a problem and solution essay. In this example, I have dedicated one body paragraph to one problem and one body paragraph to a solution. This is a good way of dealing with a common problem with this question type: giving a shopping list of problems and a list of solutions. Instead, I’ve given myself plenty of room to give details about each of my points. 

You can also see that the flow in this essay is very smooth. The introduction lets you know what is coming up in the body paragraphs. Similarly, the conclusion refers back to what has come before. There are also cohesive devices like ‘to begin’, ‘likewise’, ‘for example’, and ‘similarly’ which help show the links between sentences. 

I’ve included some of the more interesting and high-level vocabulary from the essay below. These words are underlined in the essay. They appear in the same order here as they appear in the essay. 

Climate crisis

This is another term often used for global warming. It is often preferred because ‘global warming’ sounds like it is mild while ‘climate crisis’ sounds more urgent. 

Dire circumstances 

If something is dire, it is very serious or desperate. This word often goes together with ‘circumstances’. 

Intercontinental

Inter is a prefix which means ‘between’. You might have already heard of ‘international’ which is between countries. Intercontinental is between continents. You might also hear ‘intercity’ and ‘interstellar’ for between cities and between stars. 

This is the noun version of ‘emit’. It’s something that is given off by something. Usually, this is going to be for describing a gas and especially gasses that cause global warming. 

Vicious cycle

A vicious cycle is when something causes itself and things continue to get worse and worse. Another example might be going into debt because you have no money, but having even less money because you are in debt. 

This is a common way of saying a short flight. This is usually under three hours. Between three and six hours is ‘medium-haul’ and anything over six hours is ‘long-haul’.

Fossil fuel

Fossil fuels are essentially coal and oil. The name comes from the fact that these are made from fossilised carbon. 

One type of complex grammar I found useful in this essay is an appositive. This is a piece of extra information that you insert into a sentence between commas. For example, in this sentence ‘a journey of 400 miles’ is an appositive. 

For instance, as long as a trip from London to Edinburgh, a journey of 400 miles, is far cheaper by plane than by train, the government cannot expect people to avoid this damaging route.

IELTS Model Essay: Environmental Problems

In this post, I’m going to write an IELTS Writing Task 2 model essay in response to this question about environmental problems from  Cambridge 14 (Academic) :

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own  knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

First of all, I’ll take you through my 4 Step Approach to essay planning :

• Analyse The Question
• Decide My Position
• Generate My Ideas
• Develop My Ideas

Step 1: Analyse The Question

The first thing to do is analyse the question. One way of doing this is to ( VERY carefully ) simplify the question. In this question, I think  the simplified question is this:

What is the most important environmental problem?  Is it species loss…or something else?

We can also simplify the 2 views:

View 1: species loss is the main environmental problem.

View 2: there are “more important” ones.

What might these “more important” environmental problems be? Global warming comes to my mind.

Step 2: Decide My Position

So, what do I REALLY think about this issue? In other words, what’s my position on this issue?

I think species loss is a major problem, but I think global warming is the more important one. However, I think the two problems are linked: my understanding is that global warming will lead to species loss anyway; if global warming causes species loss, it makes sense that global warming is the bigger problem.

Step 3: Generate My Ideas

Next, I need to generate some ideas for this essay .

I must also remember that the question is asking about environmental PROBLEMS, not solutions.

View 1: species loss is main environmental problem.

Well, I agree it’s important. Why do I think this?

• important to protect species – we share the world – moral obligation
• also loss of species affects humans (e.g. affects food chain, loss of fish in seas means less food for us)

View 2: there are “more important” problems.

I think global warming is a more important problem. Why do I think this?

• danger that global warming will escalate and lead to runaway warming
• ultimately this will lead to species loss anyway

Step 4: Develop My Ideas

Next, I’m going to develop my ideas using a logical structure . This will give me a clear essay plan.

Introduction :

• species loss a major concern, but is it main one?

Body Paragraph 1 

• Main Idea: moral obligation to protect species
• Explanation: loss of species is permanent, future generations
• Example: dodo

Body Paragraph 2

• Main Idea: loss of species affects humans
• Explanation: food and drugs

Body Paragraph 3

• Main Idea: global warming is more important
• Explanation: runaway heating will lead to more problems, including species loss
• Example: polar bears
• both are important, but global warming will cause species loss, so  it’s the most important problem.

I decided to write 2 separate paragraphs in my discussion of the first idea – it seems more logical to do this.

So, all I need to do now is expand these notes into full sentences and link them together ! While I write, I must, at all times, remember my position: species loss is an important problem, but global warming is even more important, and they are also linked.

So here’s my essay:

My Model Essay

The loss of natural habitats, in part due to intensive agriculture and industrial-scale mining in some parts of the world, as well as urbanisation, has put the survival of many species of plants and animals under threat. While this is certainly a major concern, is this the most pressing environmental problem that we should deal with?

I certainly feel that humanity has a moral obligation to safeguard the survival of different species of fauna and flora. The loss of any species is permanent and means that future generations will not be able to appreciate the wonders of a diverse natural world. For example, the tragic extinction of the dodo is something which we still lament even today.

Moreover, it can affect us detrimentally too. Many herbal remedies are derived from plants, and so the destruction of rainforests could easily have a negative effect on the production of medicinal drugs. In addition, we are part of a natural food chain, so the loss of animals, such as fish, means we will have less food in the future.

Ultimately though, there is a far wider problem that needs to be addressed: global warming. As a result of emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, global temperatures are rising and we risk seeing runaway heating. This will lead to a number of problems, including flooding, extreme weather and drought, but also the extinction of species. Indeed, polar bears are already struggling to survive because of the loss of polar ice caps due to rising temperatures.

In other words, working to safeguard the survival of the natural world without tackling global warming would be entirely ineffective, so it’s not really a case of which one is more important: all environmental issues are ultimately interconnected, and so we need to take a holistic approach to the issue.

My Comments

Task response: had I just argued that global warming was more important than species loss, it would be good enough for a Band 7 or 8 for TR, but I went further: I argued that both problems are important, and that they are linked. It’s a more developed position, and I think worthy of a Band 9. But explaining this position requires some advanced language, so it’s tricky for many students to do well.

Vocabulary : I desperately wanted to use the phrase “flora and fauna” somewhere! (If you don’t know it, fauna = animals, flora = flowers. There’s also a lot of natural collocation in this essay, and these phrases have precise meaning:

• intensive agriculture
• industrial-scale mining
• under threat
• the most pressing environmental problem
• has a moral obligation to
• herbal remedies

There’s some repetition of words: loss, survival and species are repeated, but this is not a problem. I’ve tried to paraphrase where appropriate (e.g. “natural world” instead of “species”).

Overall, the essay uses “natural and sophisticated control” of vocabulary, with no errors (as far as I can tell!) so it’s at a Band 9 level.

Where is conclusion ? I think conclusion is mandatory to complete the essay without sum up or conclusion it will affect on overall band score, from task achievement no one can get good band score.

The conclusion is in the final paragraph, which starts “in other words”. It probably would be clearer if I’d started it “in conclusion”, but I used a different discourse marker to improve the flow of the essay.

Introduction

There is no denying this  conviction  that the world has become a global village due to the rapid incline in technology. The spread of technical know-how has led to many problems which are spread worldwide. One of the issues is leading to disastrous aftermaths. Hence it is worth mentioning.

What is it?

The  pressing problem  that most nations are encountering these days is pollution.

Environmental contamination in any form is detrimental to mother nature. Firstly air pollution leads to harmful implications for human beings, animals, and plants. In addition, millions of people worldwide are suffering from  respiratory disorders  due to a rapid incline in the contamination of the atmosphere.

Secondly, water pollution makes life challenging for humans and marine species. Many sea creatures are on the brink of extinction because of this.

Lastly, soil pollution is declining soil fertility, and the nutritional value of the food we eat is nosediving considerably.

The prominent cause of this issue is rapid urbanization. Due to the vested interests of a few people, deforestation is burgeoning without any control, increasing the extent of harmful gases in the air.

Secondly, most people know that plastic is detrimental to our environment. Still, they are continuing with it, and this attitude of having a comfortable lifestyle is the primary cause of water and soil pollution.

Lastly, the persistent usage of fossil fuels for running automobiles is escalating air pollution at an alarming rate.

Follow up Questions

Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner might ask during your speaking part 3 related to the cue card “ Describe an International Problem.”

1. What are the most pressing global issues facing the world today?  Although we have numerous issues to tackle worldwide, the most prominent are global warming, corona pandemic, economic imbalance, and political chaos.

2. How do international organizations address global issues?  International organizations, like the United Nations and the World Bank, do their best to tackle global problems using divergent means, including diplomacy, financial aid, and peacekeeping initiatives.

3. What role do individual countries play in addressing global issues? 

Individual nations are vital in tackling global problems by collaborating with international organizations and executing policies and drives on the national front.

4. How do international relations impact global issues?  

International relations often have a considerable impact on global problems, as one nation’s deeds can usually have implications for other countries and worldwide too.

5. How can individuals get involved in addressing global issues? 

There are beaucoup ways through which individuals can provide support in caring for global problems, like helping organizations that specialize in these conflicts, offering time or funds, and expressing solidarity for initiatives that foster worldwide well-being.

Global warming is one of the various climatic issues. Discuss the possible causes and offer measures to control the damage caused. 

The scientific community of the world accepts the fact that our world has turned warmer. The temperature of the earth is seeing a steep rise. A shift in the climatic conditions is an acute problem caused due to various aspects of global warming. 

Climate scientists have concluded that measures should be taken to restrict the temperature rise if we have to avoid hazardous droughts, earthquakes, floods, and forest fires in the coming years. Today, we will understand the possible causes and the solutions to decrease the threat associated with global warming.

Firstly, the burning of fossil fuels is one of the prime causes of global warming. The increasing demand for cars and energy consumption has escalated the emission from fossil fuels like petroleum and coal. 

Secondly, deforestation is a major cause behind the world turning warmer. Growing towns and cities are damaging the forests, which leads to deforestation. Several human activities cause global warming, but the major reason is the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide trap sunlight to raise the temperature above the optimal standards. This leads to a sharp rise in the temperature. 

Lastly, the industries emit waste and hazardous chemicals into the air without treating them. These gases and harmful wastes have detrimental impacts on the environment. The temperature rise triggers various natural calamities like droughts, severe floods, and ice cap melting. The damage done cannot be altered. However, steps and measures need to be taken by both the government and individuals, to reduce damage in the future. 

Firstly, the government must regulate the emission of dangerous chemical waste and harmful carbon gases from industries. They should impose strict policies for the industries to control the harmful emissions, by treating them before releasing them into the air. Industries need to come up with environmentally friendly alternatives to fossil fuels. 

Secondly, apart from the government, every individual needs to be alert. Various community awareness schemes and programs are important to educate the masses about the causes and impacts of global warming. Individuals need to decrease the demand for cars and use public transportation. Alternatives like CNG and electric vehicles should be considered. Household wastes should be dumped in such a manner that the environment is not harmed. 

To conclude, global warming has harmful effects on mankind, the ecosystem, and wildlife. Individuals and government bodies are equally responsible for carrying out effective measures to control global warming. Effective strategies and awareness can at least reduce the harmful impacts of global warming. We should aim to make our earth - green, safe, and a happy place for lives to sustain.

• Introduction

The introduction should be of about 2-3 lines and should talk about the subject at hand. This paragraph should also clearly tell the examiner about your opinion on the topic (if asked in the question). This paragraph should talk about the first side of the argument or the problems of greenhouse gas emissions, or global warming causes, depending on the type of question you have been asked. You should also provide any examples that may be relevant over here. This part of the essay should talk only about the second side of the argument or the possible solutions for a problem or the effects of a problem. Just like the previous paragraph, you should try to give a good example here as well that is in coherence with the whole argument. This part should summarise both sides briefly while also emphasising your opinion of the topic. All the while, you should ensure that you are using excellent vocabulary and perfect grammar in every paragraph because it is sure to leave a great impression on the examiner.

Here, the writer thinks of deforestation as the more severe problem.

Of late, the question of which poses a greater danger to our survival from global warming and deforestation forms the backbone of many conflicts in a number of circles. While some people believe that the effects of global warmings, such as extreme weather conditions, are more far-reaching and, therefore, more concerning, some others are of the opinion that the rapid depletion of our forest cover caused by deforestation leads to more serious consequences like soil erosion, air pollution, and loss of habitat. In my opinion, the impact of deforestation is more immediate and is, therefore, to be taken relatively more seriously. Global warming gives birth to extreme weather conditions like scorching hot summers, impossibly heavy rainfalls, and brutally cold winters. On average, the Earth’s temperature is rising by 1.5 and falling by 2.2 degrees Celsius in summers and winters, respectively. In this regard, while deforestation only impacts the local areas where the forest cover is reduced, global warming also impacts regions like Antarctica, where the problem of deforestation is not as grave. So, many people consider global warming to be the paramount concern when it comes to the survival of human life. In contrast to the former viewpoint, some people strongly believe that deforestation is the more immediate cause of concern because of the shorter gestation period. We can see its repercussions like soil erosion, loss of wildlife, increase in cO2 , and droughts, among other problems. Recently news showed that after the state government of a metropolitan area ordered to cut down trees to procure more land to build complexes on, wild animals were seen roaming the streets. As if this wasn’t enough, the amount of carbon dioxide rose, and the area was flooded by the monsoon soon after. To recapitulate, I believe that deforestation is more concerning than global warming because of its immediate impact on the local environment, and the people and government need to work in tandem to curb this practice in their district.

With the dawn of industrialisation and urbanisation, our environment has changed drastically, and mostly for the worst. After witnessing the utter chaos on a global scale brought to life by alarming consequences of climate change like ozone layer depletion, forest fires, and global warming, people have narrowed down the causes to two very serious environmental problems: global warming and deforestation. The question of which one has a more severe impact on our world has been the topic of discussion in recent decades. Global warming has given rise to a myriad of issues like rising temperature and worsening air and water quality, which have long-lasting ramifications for this planet’s inhabitants. For instance, surging sea levels in cities situated on river banks have been a piece of alarming news that has prompted various governments to act on it. Additionally, the state of coral reefs in parts of Australia and other countries has also gained global attention.

Overall, the consequences of global warming are threatening the wide gamut of species existing on our planet. Deforestation has also caused a multitude of environmental issues like frequent flooding due to the soil going loose owing to a depleting forest cover, loss of indigenous species, droughts, and more. A good example of this is the rising levels of pollution in overly industrialised countries which is a direct implication of fewer forests. Conclusively, it is impossible to pick one out of the two – deforestation and global warming – and to claim it as the more serious problem because both have worked in tandem to increase environmental concerns. Therefore, we have to direct our efforts in the direction that curbs the effect of both issues equally and significantly if we don’t want to find ourselves on the brink of extinction in the near future.

Managing global environmental issues should be handled by one organisation on a global scale. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your ideas.

Opinion essay

Introduction

Sentences 1&2 – In the present day and age, people are facing greater environmental problems on a larger scale than in the past. Therefore, several people opine that environmental issues should be dealt with by a unitary global organisation rather than dispersed efforts from small groups.

Sentence 3 – However, I disagree with this notion and will expand on my views in the following essay.

Body Paragraphs

Paragraph 1 – For people to take accountability and for faster decision making, smaller bodies rather than a global organisation should be tasked with resolving environmental issues.

Paragraph 2 – It may be difficult to bring people from so many different countries together and having a large global body may leave some issues unaddressed while dealing with others.

Paragraph 3 – Having a global body managing environmental issues will help establish universal laws and policies for the environment while also encouraging a spirit of collaboration.

To sum up, it can be said that while there are some benefits to having a worldwide organisation managing environmental issues, it might be preferable to have smaller organisations for individual accountability and the ease of decision making and effecting change in the community.

Sample Essay

In the present day and age, people are facing greater environmental problems on a larger scale than in the past. Therefore, several people opine that environmental issues should be dealt with by a unitary global organisation rather than dispersed efforts from small groups. However, I disagree with this notion and will expand on my views in the following essay.

Firstly, constructive action to mitigate the environmental problems arising today must originate at a very small scale level in order for the change to be felt by people at the grassroots level. Encouraging people to take individual action will enable them to develop accountability rather than shirk their responsibilities toward the environment. Additionally, implementing changes and making decisions will be much faster and more efficient if it takes place at a more rudimentary level.

Furthermore, conglomerating individuals from different countries with disparate perspectives and viewpoints into one universal body will be very difficult to organise. Hence, having smaller bodies operating at the community, state, or national level may be easier to institute. Research has also shown that when working, environmental workers prefer to work within their own teams than working with larger groups consisting of a myriad of teams. Lastly, the environmental challenges faced differ from one region to another, so having a global organisation addressing all the problems may leave some issues unaddressed.

However, it can be said that a worldwide authority on environmental issues will help establish uniform policies, laws, and criteria for action. Environmental problems are of concern to every country; thus, ensuring their participation in such an organisation would guarantee that they are all doing their bit to resolve the environmental crisis. In addition, carrying out such a widespread venture would encourage a spirit of collaboration and help people unite in the face of problems.

To sum up, it can be said that while there are some benefits to having a worldwide organisation managing environmental issues, it might be preferable to have smaller organisations for individual compliance and the ease of decision making and effecting change in the community.

Meaning – Basic or elementary Example – I was only able to develop a very rudimentary grasp of Mandarin before the classes stopped.

• Conglomerate

Meaning – Combination or mingling Example – The rocks are formed with a conglomerate of a number of elements.

Meaning – Different Example – Even though they were related, they could not have looked any more disparate.

Meaning – Step forward or proceed Example – We ventured farther out into the forest in search of a place to pitch our tent.

• Constructive

Meaning – Productive or possible Example – Norway’s prison system helps convicts figure out how to play a constructive role in society well before their release.

Meaning – Varied Example – From the flight, I could see the myriad light of the city floating below me.

Meaning – At the most basic or fundamental level Example – It is important to implement environmental awareness and concern from the grassroots level.
