Educational Loan Request Letter: How To Make Yours Stand Out!

As someone who has crafted numerous educational loan request letters over the years, I’ve realized that a well-structured and compelling letter can significantly increase your chances of getting your loan approved.

Here’s a comprehensive guide, based on my experience, to help you write an effective educational loan request letter.

Key Takeaways:

  • Understand the Purpose : Recognize the importance of the letter in securing your educational loan.
  • Be Clear and Concise : Present your information in a straightforward manner.
  • Personalization : Tailor the letter to reflect your unique educational journey and financial needs.
  • Documentation : Attach necessary documents to support your request.
  • Follow Up : Be prepared to follow up after sending your letter.

Step 1: Start with Personal Introduction

Begin your letter with a personal introduction. Mention your name, current educational status, and the program you wish to enroll in. This sets the context for your request.

Example: “My name is [Your Name], a recent graduate from [Your School], and I am writing to request a loan for my upcoming Master’s program in [Program Name] at [University Name].”

Step 2: State the Purpose of the Loan

Clearly explain why you need the loan. Include details about the course, such as the duration, fees, and how it aligns with your career goals.

Example: “The total cost of the program is [Amount], which covers tuition, books, and living expenses for the two-year duration. This program is a crucial step for my career in [Your Career Goal].”

Step 3: Outline Your Financial Situation

Discuss your financial situation honestly. Mention any scholarships, grants, or existing financial aid you have and explain why they are insufficient.

Example: “Despite receiving a partial scholarship, I am facing a shortfall of [Amount], which I am hoping to cover with this loan.”

Step 4: Detail Your Repayment Plan

Lenders want to know that you can repay the loan. Outline your repayment strategy, including potential earnings and any backup plans.

Example: “Upon graduation, I plan to work in [Industry/Job Role], where the starting salary averages [Amount]. This income will enable me to repay the loan within [Timeframe].”

Step 5: Provide Supporting Documentation

Attach documents like admission letters, fee structures, scholarship details, and your resume. This evidence strengthens your request.

Documentation Checklist:

  • Admission Letter
  • Fee Structure of the Program
  • Scholarship or Grant Details
  • Your Resume/CV
  • Financial Statements (if applicable)

Step 6: Conclude with a Thank You and Follow-Up

End your letter by thanking the lender for considering your request. Mention that you are willing to provide any additional information if needed.

Example: “Thank you for considering my application. I am happy to provide any further information required and look forward to a positive response.”

Step 7: Proofread and Send

Finally, proofread your letter for any errors. A well-written, error-free letter makes a good impression.

How to Write a Letter for a Student Loan

Proper Format for a Thank You Letter for a Scholarship

Proper Format for a Thank You Letter for a Scholarship

Asking for money from anyone is often a daunting task, but when it comes to funding your higher education and its hefty price tag, it is a necessary evil. When applying for a private student loan or for additional loan funding from your school, you may need to write a letter to a student loan officer. This letter needs to contain specific information to assist the lender in determining your eligibility and understanding your need. Knowing the specific elements needed in this type of letter will help you gather the funding necessary for your education.

Application for Education Loan in College

Many schools and lenders require you to complete an application that you will submit with your letter of request. Make sure you complete all required materials and submit the packet together to avoid a delayed response. In some instances, you may see a list of specific information you need to include in the request letter. You should use this as a checklist once you complete your request letter to ensure you have included all the required details for the school or lender to process your request.

Student Loan Department Letter Format

Your education loan repayment letter format should have a formal style. This means you should write in a professional and respectful manner. For example, you should not complain or use foul language when discussing your life circumstances. Instead, state your needs and background in a matter-of-fact way without appearing emotional. Set the tone of your letter by using a professional font and use a business letter format. Type the date on the top left side of the page and then move at least two lines down from the date, where you will type the name of the organization and the address. If you have a contact person, you will place his or her name on the line above the organization name. Conduct a web search and review student loan letter samples to get an idea of what your letter should look like.

Write a Clear Introduction

If you have a contact name, begin the letter with a traditional salutation, such as “Dear Mr. Smith.” However, if you do not know who will read your letter, start your letter with “To whom it may concern.” You will start a new paragraph that will be your introduction. In this paragraph, introduce yourself and include your major, academic standing and specific goals you have. Inform the school or lender of the amount of money you are requesting.

Identify and Explain Financial Needs

Once you have introduced yourself and the amount you need, you can explain how you plan to use the student loan. You may need funds for living expenses or perhaps a new computer. Make sure you know any limitations on how you can use your student loan since some lenders will not fund more than tuition, books or supplies needed for a course. Next, you should state the ways the student loan funds will help you reach your goals. This provides a chance for you to give the lender reasons to invest in you and your future.

Write a Conclusion

In a final paragraph, restate the amount you need and thank the school or lender for considering your request. You will then close your letter with “Sincerely,” or another appropriate ending. Include your name and contact information at the end of the letter.

How to Write a Student Loan Goodwill Letter to Save Your Credit: Sample Included

Late or missing student loan payments can cause your credit score to tank. Read on for a sample letter to remove a student loan from your credit report.

Sarah Li Cain

Nov 11, 2021

Not making on-time payments on your student loans will negatively impact your credit score . On the upside, you may be able to rescue your damaged credit score by writing a student loan goodwill letter.

It’s not a guarantee, but sending one might be worth the effort. The worst thing that could happen is that your loan servicer could deny your request. But you could get lucky, and the lender could ask the credit bureaus to take your late payments off your credit history.

Let’s g over what you need to know, including a sample letter you can use to remove a late student loan payment from your credit report.

What Is a Student Loan Goodwill Letter?

A goodwill letter is a letter you send to your loan servicer to request that, in an act of goodwill, it remove any late or missed student loan payments from your credit report. Since late payments are a major red flag, your credit score could tank if  you don’t make on-time payments .

One possible consequence of having a low credit score is being denied a loan. And even if you do qualify for a car loan, mortgage or personal loan, you could be charged high fees and interest rates.

Writing a goodwill letter is your best bet if you were the one who caused the late or missed payment and you want to explain why it happened. If a reported late payment was because of your loan servicer’s mistake, then you’ll need to dispute it with the credit bureau directly.

If you can successfully convince your lender you’re still a reliable borrower, you may have these negative remarks on your credit report removed. If so, your credit score could see a sharp improvement reasonably quickly.

Will My Goodwill Letter Work?

No matter how well written your goodwill letter is, there is no guarantee that the lender will agree to your request. The decision is totally up to the lender, which may not accept or care about the circumstances that resulted in your missed or late payment.

But you may get a sympathetic reader who understands why you made a late student loan payment, especially if it was due to an illness, a sudden job loss or other unexpected circumstances.

If you explain what happened in a polite and appreciative tone, your lender might be receptive to your request.

When you write your letter, carefully explain what happened that got you into a financial pickle — aka what resulted in your late or missed payment. Admit your mistake and conclude by assuring the loan servicer that it won’t happen again and that missing a payment is rare for you.

Sample Letter to Remove Student Loan From Credit Report

Each borrower’s goodwill letter will be unique, but this sample can give you a good start for how to structure yours. Remember: You should write your letter with a friendly and appreciative tone while being clear in your request. All letters should include the loan account number, the borrower’s contact information, and details about the late or missed payment.

Dear [loan servicer name],

My name is [your name], and my student loan account number is [your account number]. I discovered there was a late payment reported on Jan. 1, 2021, on my credit report. I understand that my actions resulted in this late payment.

I want to let you know that I am willing to do everything I can to pay back my student loans in full and on time. Sadly, I recently underwent major surgery and have been negotiating with my health insurance company for months about my five-figure medical bill. Due to this unexpected expense, my budget was stretched too thin. I also had to take unpaid time off work and could not keep up with payments.

I assure you that missing payments is rare for me. You can check my payment history to see that I’ve always made on-time payments (and sometimes more than the minimum amount) other than this one time. Once I went back to work, I was able to balance my budget and resumed making my loan payments on time.

I am concerned that my low credit score may result in me having to pay a higher interest rate for a home equity loan I plan to take out. I don’t feel as though my credit report reflects the kind of responsible borrower I truly am.

I request that you remove the late payment as a goodwill gesture. I appreciate and thank you for your consideration and hope that my request will be granted.

How long does it take to get a response to a goodwill letter?

It may take a few weeks to get a response from your lender. You can follow up by calling your lender if you haven’t heard anything after a few weeks.

If Your Request Is Denied

There’s a chance your lender won’t approve your request. If your credit score is negatively affected, you’ll have to take steps to rebuild your credit. The best way to do so is to keep making on-time payments, to be careful about closing old accounts, and to avoid maxing out your credit cards, among other steps.

If you’re still struggling with making your student loan payments, contact your lender to see what can be done, such as adjusting your monthly payments or exploring your options for loan deferment or forbearance. You may be able to reach an agreement and prevent further damage to your credit.

Also consider  refinancing through an organization such as Juno , which could help you save tens of thousands of dollars throughout the life of your loan. Juno negotiates with partner lenders on behalf of borrowers to help each student qualify for the best refinance rates they can given their financial situation.

How to Write a Student Loan Goodwill Letter

Wondering, “what is a goodwill letter?” Learn how to write a goodwill letter for student loans and more.

Updated by B Harshitha on 1st September 2021

Student loan providers and servicers aren’t very forgiving, especially when it comes to missed or late payments. Tardy or missed loan payments will cost you late fees, higher APRs, a 7-year blemish on your credit report, and a tanked credit score. But, the worst consequence is your tarnished ability to access favourable loan terms for future credit. Mortgages and business loans are quite difficult to obtain if you have records of missed loan payments on your credit file.

Despite the consequences, we know that sometimes, late or missed payments are inevitable. Being a student with little income and high expenses can easily result in the odd missed payment. If you find yourself missing payments on your student loans for any number of reasons, you might want to reach out to your student loan servicer. That’s where a goodwill letter comes in handy. A goodwill letter for student loans is a great step in addressing missed or late payments, and is sometimes even enough to erase late payments from your credit report. Many students write goodwill letters to remove late payments from their credit reports.

We’ll go through the ins and outs of goodwill letters, specifically student loan goodwill letters, to help you understand “what is a goodwill letter,” and to learn how to write a goodwill letter. We’ll look at specific goodwill letter templates and sample goodwill letters to help you prepare one for yourself.

A student loan goodwill letter is a letter written by a student to a student loan servicer requesting erasure of any records of late or missed student loan payments. Specifically, the letter requests that the servicer/creditor ask credit bureaus to remove any records of late or missed student loan payments from the student’s credit report. Student loan goodwill letters can be used for both federal and private student loans .

A goodwill letter also describes a student’s specific financial and personal situation, offering any context and evidence of goodwill towards the student’s missed payments. For example, a lender might offer leniency to a student who faced death in their family. In some cases, goodwill letters point out errors and mistakes in a loan servicer’s assessment. Most goodwill letters have a calm, apologetic,  and soft tone to appeal to the reader’s sympathy.

Here are some scenarios that might warrant a student loan goodwill letter:

Technical Issues

Sometimes your loan servicer might not record your payment properly due to technical issues. either on your end or the servicer’s end. If this happens, confirm the technical issue with your servicer. Then, write a goodwill letter to your lender explaining what happened and requesting that they withhold the late or missed payment information from the credit bureau.

Personal Issues

Being a student is expensive and stressful, and guess what — that’s a good enough excuse to write a goodwill letter. If you simply had a lot going on in your life, describe your situation in a goodwill letter. High stress levels, financial illiteracy, confusion in the student loan process, death or illness, and other personal issues are all valid topics to discuss in your letter.

Wrong Address

If you receive bills in the mail, your loan servicer might send your bill to the wrong address. Make sure you always update your personal information on your loan servicer account, including if you move to a new address. If you missed a bill for this reason, you could describe the situation to your loan servicer in your goodwill letter.

Negative Closed Account

If you have a closed and charged off negative student loan account, it could still show up on your credit report. In this case, you might want to write a goodwill letter to your lender. If your negative closed account remains on your report, your credit score will continue to drop.

What Documents Should I Include With My Student Loan Goodwill Letter?

A mere description of your situation won’t be sufficient for the lender or servicer. They need details to make sure they know who you are, and which loan and payments you’re drawing to their attention. Make sure you include the following information and documents with your letter:

  • Name, phone number, address, and email
  • Credit bureaus listing mistaken report
  • Creditor information - name, address,
  • Account number and other important banking details
  • Bank statements showing your general ability to pay on time
  • Any other documents that prove your described issues

Student loan goodwill letters, also known as goodwill forgiveness removal letters and goodwill adjustment letters, require some thought before drafting. In your letter, you don’t want to appear rude, misinformed, or secretive.

Use these tips to write the perfect goodwill letter:

Be Polite and Personable

Debt and credit worries are stressful. It’s easy to lose your temper over the phone or even with a person if you’re discussing something that worries you. Make a conscious effort to maintain a neutral, polite tone with your creditor or servicer, even if they were the ones who made an error. And, make sure to address a specific representative or department instead of the generic “to whom it may concern” opening. This channels a more personable voice

Be Accountable

Describe your overlooks or wrongdoings early in the letter. Take responsibility for late payments, but also explain your situation and how it made it harder for you to make your payments. Additionally, take this time to assure your lender or servicer that you are capable of making future payments. Include proof like bank statements to demonstrate your financial capability, and to gain their trust.

Keep It Short and Sweet

Explain your situation and include pertinent details, but don’t write an elaborately long letter. Your loan servicer will appreciate it!

Student Loan Goodwill Letter Sample

Drafting a goodwill letter might feel intimidating at first. It’s always helpful to refer to a goodwill letter student loan example. Use this student loan template to draft your student loan goodwill letter:

[Your name]

[Your address]

[Account number]

[Last four digits of your Social Security number]

To [Student loan lender/servicer],

Thank you for this opportunity to discuss my issue with you. My name is [Your Name], and I’m writing to discuss a late/missed payment I noticed on my credit report.

It has always been a pleasure working with your organization, and I appreciate your support over the months/years in helping me manage my student loans. I have always maintained a good repayment record up until now, and rarely, if ever, paid anything late.

Recently, I experienced a sudden [insert personal issue] which severely impacted my ability to make payments on time. Had it not been for [[insert personal issue], I would have made my payments on time as I have for the past [insert time period].

I’m hoping you could help me by removing this late/missed payment from my record, and asking the credit bureaus to remove it from my report.

I plan to [insert credit activity, like getting a mortgage] and with this blemish on my credit report, I’ll be faced with high interest and fees, which will set me back. I also believe my credit report isn’t an accurate representation of how creditworthy I am, or of my dedication to repaying my loans.

I value punctuality and am confident that I will do better in the future. I’ve attached bank statements to demonstrate my ability to make my payments going forward. I would really appreciate a goodwill adjustment to help me move on with life, without having a past mistake hold me back.

Thank you for your time and consideration. Feel free to reach out with any questions. I hope you have a great day.

How to Write a Loan Application Letter (with Samples)

Sometimes we need financial assistance to push through with our business idea, education, medical emergencies, or any other personal project or goals that require a huge amount of money for its realization. Basically, it is for this reason that banks and other money lending institutions exist.

Applying for a loan from any lending institution requires the applicant to first fill out a form.  Along with this form, the applicant can attach a loan application letter that provides more details on what he/she intends to do with the money and an overview of how the loan will be paid.

As a loan applicant, you need to learn how to write the loan request letter in a polite and convincing tone to appeal to your lender for your loan to be granted successfully.

What is a Loan Application Letter?

A Loan application letter is a document that informs the financial lending institution of the amount of money you are asking for, a clear outline of what you intend to do with the money, and convinces the bank why you are a good investment risk. Because it is a request, a loan application letter should be written in a polite tone, short and to the point.

The Loan Application Process

Based on the financial institution you choose, the process and time it takes for you to receive funding may vary. However, the typical loan application process may take on the following critical stages:

Pre-qualification stage

Prior to the loan contract, the potential borrower receives a list of items that they need to submit to the lender for them to get a loan. This may include Identification proof, credit score, current employment information, bank statements as well as previous loan statements.

Immediately this information is submitted, the lender reviews the documents and makes a pre-approval- meaning the borrower can move on to the next phase of the loan application process.

Loan application

In the second phase of the loan origination process, the borrower fills-in the loan application form either electronically- through mobile apps, websites, or paper-based. The data collected is then tailored to specific loan products.

The aspects that are included in the loan application form include the following;

The payment method- if it will be personal, through a check, or via online banking.

The payment frequency- There are several payment frequency methods, for example, Monthly installments, annually, or if the loan will be paid once.

The amount of interest accumulated on the loaned amount. This is the amount of money charged by the lender to the borrower on top of the amount which he/she has loaned.

The assets in the form of properties of the borrower will serve as collateral damage/guarantees in case the borrower defaults loan repayment or is unable to make his payments as per the agreed time.

Application processing

Once the application is received by the credit department, it is reviewed for accuracy, genuineness, and completeness.  Lenders then use Loan Originating Systems to determine an applicant’s creditworthiness.

Underwriting process

This process only begins after an application is totally completed. In this stage, the lender checks the application in consideration of various accounts, such as an applicant’s credit score, risk scores, and other industry-based criteria. Today, this process is fully automated using Rule Engines and API integrations with credit scoring engines.

Credit Decision

Based on the results from the underwriting phase, the lender makes a credit decision. The loan is either approved, denied, or sent back to the originator for additional information. If the criteria used do not match with what is set in the engine system, there is an automatic change in the loan parameters, for instance, reduced loan amount or a different interest rate on the loaned amount.

Quality Check

Quality check of the loan application process is very critical since lending is highly regulated. The loan application is then sent to the Quality Control Team to analyze critical variables of the loan against internal and external regulations on loans. This is often the last step of the application process before funding is approved.

Loan funding

Once the loan documents are signed by both the borrower and the lender, funds are released shortly after. Nevertheless, business loans, loans on properties, and second mortgage loans may comparatively take more time to be approved due to legal and compliance reasons.

Essential Elements of a Loan Application Letter

Now that you have already understood the complex loan application process, it is important that you know the critical points to include in your loan request letter to convince your lender to give you a business loan.

Here is how to effectively write a loan application letter:

Header and greetings

The first and most important element of your business or personal loan application letter should be a header and an appropriate greeting.

In your header, include the following details:

  • Your business names
  • The physical address of your business
  • Business telephone and cell phone numbers
  • Lender’s contact details
  • Lender’s or Loan Agent’s Name and Title
  • A subject line stating the loan amount you are requesting for.

Once you have written your header, include a friendly but professional greeting to start off your loan application letter in a cordial tone.

Business Loan Request Summary

The body of your business or personal loan request letter should start with a brief summary of your loan request amount, why you need the loan, your basic business information, and why you are an ideal risk investment for the lender. This section should be brief and concise. Only include the relevant information to capture your loan agent’s interest and keep them reading the body of your loan application letter.

Basic Details about your Business

Ideally, this is the third paragraph of your loan application letter. Use a few short and concise sentences to give a clear outline of your business.

Be sure to include the details below:

  • The legal name of your business and any DBA that your business uses
  • Your business structure- if it is a corporation- partnership, individually owned, etc.
  • A summary of what your business does.
  • How long your business has been operational
  • Total number of employees
  • A brief description of your current annual revenue

Once you have provided your basic business information, it is time to write the meat of your business loan request letter- clearly explaining why you need the business loan and how you intend to recuperate the investment.

The purpose of the business loan

In the fourth paragraph of your loan application letter, explain succinctly how you will use the business loan. Additionally, tell the lender why your intended use of the business loan will be a wise business investment.

While detailing this section, be as specific as possible and demonstrate to the lender that you have carefully considered the kind of revenue generation this new debt will accomplish for your business. for instance, don’t just say that you intend to use the loan for working capital. Rather, say that you plan to increase your inventory by 45% or that you need to increase your Human Resources to 4 to generate more income by 6%.

In the same paragraph, inform the lender exactly how the loaned amount will help generate more profits necessary to cover repayment plus the interest accumulated on loan.

Proof that you’ll be able to fully repay the loan

In this section, you need to demonstrate to the lender that you can pay back the loaned amount together with interest as per the agreed repayment period. You will want to use any figures from your latest income statements or balance sheets to prove your business is financially healthy and that it is a low-risk investment decision for your lender. In case you have other existing debts, be sure to mention them and include a business debt schedule if possible. If your business is profitable, highlight that in your letter since it something that most lenders pretty much look for in successful loan applicants.

In addition to that, consider including specific cash flow projections to demonstrate to your lender how you plan to fit repayment of the loaned amount plus interest into your budget.

Guarantor Trust Bank

Ref: Loan Request for $10,000

Exactly two years ago, I started my small face mask vending business in our local market. Over the last two years, my business has picked up really well to an extent where I need to expand to a bigger face mask vending company.

It is for this reason that I am writing this letter. I am confident that there is a great market niche for face masks, especially due to the current worldwide Novel Covid-19 Pandemic. Thus far, I have had many repeat customers, new customer links through referrals, and my client base has grown rapidly. Generally, there is an increase in demand for my products; therefore, I am requesting for a loan amounting to $10,000 to be able to supply more and satisfy all my clients.

This money, along with the amount that I have saved up from my profits, will enable me to lease a large, modern storefront and to import supplies that will help me launch my business plan.

I have attached my business plan, my latest business balance sheets, current business schedules, as well as my credit history statements for your perusal and review. If you have any questions or need any further clarifications, please contact me directly on (111) 345 679 or email me at Mitchel.facemasksltd.co.ke. Thank you for your consideration.

Samira Mitchel.

Sample 2: Personal Loan Application Letter

Dear Michael,

It is common for everyone to face difficult situations and bitter realities in life. I am currently facing a situation where everything seems bleak, and there seems to be no way out of this difficult situation. I am in debt, and I need to pay at least 30% of my house’s mortgage will be taken over by the bank, and I am currently ailing and weak, I’ll not be able to survive such a nervewrecking situation.

The only way I can avoid such a fate is by paying the full amount that is needed by the bank. I can be able to do so if I am allowed to take out a loan from the office, which is a privilege that the company has granted to all the employees. I would be thankful if the company allows me to borrow the money against my monthly pay.

Do’s and Don’ts of Writing a Loan Request Letter

A loan application letter may increase or break your chances of receiving funding from any lending institution. This is because it is the first thing that lenders look for in the underwriting process when you submit an application. That said, you must know the dos and don’ts of writing a winning loan request letter to help you receive the funding that you really need.

  • Check your personal and business credit scores before sending a loan request letter and take the necessary steps to improve them.
  • Have all your financial statements ready, including cash flow statements, business balance sheets, P$L statements, etc
  • Make sure to submit all your relevant credentials along with your loan application request letter.
  • Always provide the correct and factual information to avoid fraudulent consequences.
  • Don’t make your letter too long and unnecessarily wordy
  • Don’t use an informal format while writing the loan application letter. Instead, follow the proper rules on writing formal letters
  • Don’t include any false information in your loan request letter- be it your business’s current financial health, assets, and liabilities that may be used as collateral damage in case you default payment or why you need the money.

Things to Remember When Writing a Loan Application Letter

Generally, you should always consider the following essential tips if you want to write a winning loan application letter:

  • The loan application letter is a formal document. Therefore, observe the proper rules of writing a formal letter.
  • Clearly state your intent to borrow a given amount of money
  • Provide a vivid but brief description of why you need the money. Your explanation should be concise, genuine, and transparent. While at it, explain how you plan to use the loaned amount and be very sincere about it.
  • Explain why your business is a low-risk investment decision for the lender.
  • Enumerate your assets and liabilities
  • Include the time, date, manner, and method that you will use to make your payment.

Collateral is defined as something that helps secure a loan. Generally, based on the type of lending institution you pick, the lender will give you less than your pledged asset value. Lenders every so often quote an acceptable loan to value ratio, meaning that if you borrow against your house, for example, and it worth $400,000, you will be given a loan amounting to $380,000. Again, this depends on the bank.

The prepayment penalty is a fee that some lenders charge if you pay off all or part of your loan before the loan’s maturity date. These do not usually apply if you pay extra principal on your loaned amount in small amounts at a time. However, it is good that you counter check with your lender.

Every lender follows a different criterion to approve a business or personal loan. The application process depends on several factors; therefore, the time taken to receive funding in your account may take anywhere from a few minutes to several days. This depends on the type of institution you choose and the type of loan you are asking for.

Acquiring a loan is sometimes a necessity in one’s business or personal life.  Nonetheless, it is not always easy to get a loan as lenders are wary of granting loans due to loan repayment defaults and fraudulent borrowers. This article has provided you with great insight on loan application letters, the loan application process, essential tips for writing a winning loan application letter, and the dos and don’ts of writing a convincing loan request letter. If you keep these things in mind every time you are thinking of applying for a loan, you are sure to get the funds you need to ensure the smooth running of your business and sort any personal emergency that may come your way.

The application was briefly made available in beta mode over the weekend; if you submitted an application during the beta-testing period, you do not need to apply again.

On August 24, President Biden announced that he would forgive $10,000 in student loans per borrower , $20,000 if you received a Pell Grant, if you meet the following income requirements:

  • Annual income of $125,000 or less for individuals
  • Annual income of $250,000 or less for married couples who file their taxes jointly

  • Defaulted loans (including Department of Education-held or commercially serviced Subsidized Stafford, Unsubsidized Stafford, Parent PLUS, and graduate PLUS loans, and Perkins loans held by the Department of Education)

Additionally, you can check your student-loan servicer. If your student-loan servicer is Nelnet, MOHELA, or one of the federal student-loan servicers listed below, your student loans qualify for forgiveness.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Student Finance

In University by Think Student Editor December 22, 2022 Leave a Comment

Sorting out your finances and funding can be difficult at any point. However, due to the rather complex systems and there often being a lack of information, it can be even worse for university students when applying for student finance. The problems especially arise when it comes to the more nitty-gritty parts of sorting out student finance, such as with your actual application for it and cover letters.

Continue reading to learn more about writing a cover letter to secure your student finance. This article will answer your burning questions about what this cover letter is all about, whether you need one and a step-by-step guide for writing your own.

Table of Contents

What is a student finance cover letter?

In general terms, a cover letter is normally used for a job application. It is a short letter, only about 5 paragraphs long, that is meant to essentially convince a potential employer to hire you. For more information about this, check out this guide by the National Careers Service.

However, for student finance, this cover letter can be pretty different and is at times less clear. While it may be in reference to the general student finance application, your student finance form. To learn more about these, check out this governmental guide .

A cover letter for student finance is more likely to be in reference to applying for additional finance for compelling personal reasons . This may also be known as discretionary funding.

This is where you are applying for additional funding from student finance to support you in your studies after having put on hold or withdrawn from your previous studies . This pause or withdrawal from your studies will need to have been unavoidable for it to come under the bracket of compelling personal reasons.

The idea of this cover letter is that you will need to explain your situation and why this means that you need more funding to study . You will also need to provide some form of evidence of your situation. For more information about this, check out this guide by the University of Manchester.

Do you need a cover letter for your student finance application?

Whether you need a cover letter for your student finance application will depend on what kind of application it is . For example, if this is just the regular student finance application, you will generally be able to apply online and so you won’t need a cover letter . To learn more about applying for funding, check out this UCAS guide .

However, if this application is for additional finance for compelling personal reasons, you will need a cover letter in order to explain your situation . Compelling personal reasons is an overarching term for a range of reasons for why someone may have had to stop or pause their studies. These can include but are not limited to mental or physical health issues, bereavement, pregnancy, or caring responsibilities.

The cover letter is important for discretionary funding as your application for this funding is much more of an appeal that the regular student finance application. In this way, your application for discretionary funding due to compelling personal reasons may not be accepted. To learn more about this, check out this guide by the Sheffield Hallam Students’ Union.

How long should your cover letter be for student finance?

While there’s not particularly an exact word count for how long your student finance compelling personal reasons cover letter should be, it mostly like will only need to fit about one side of A4 . In fact, considering how it is in some ways structurally similar to the cover letter of a job application, it is likely that once again you may only need about 5 or so paragraphs, as mentioned above.

While it is unlikely to be very long, you will need to make sure that you include everything . Included in your student finance cover letter will need to be:

  • Your personal details – This is including your name, address, ways of contacting you such as email or phone number and your student finance reference number.
  • An explanation of what you are requesting – This is essentially to explain what type of funding you need, whether this is a reinstatement of funding from the year you couldn’t complete or if it is the continuation of your maintenance loan during your suspension of studies.
  • An explanation of your situation – This is where you would explain what your compelling personal reasons for pausing or suspending your studies are and how they have affected you.
  • An explanation of the timeframe – This is where you would explain when the problem(s) began and how long they have been an issue for.
  • An explanation of how your situation has changed – This is for you to explain why the same situation that suspended your studies is unlikely to happen again.

For more information about all of this, check out this guide by Northumbria University.

How do you write a cover letter for student finance? (step-by-step guide)

Writing your cover letter for compelling personal reasons to student finance is no easy feat. However, it is such an important part of your application that it is important that know how to do it.

The following steps will take you through a step-by-step guide on how to write your cover letter to student finance. The information included in the following sections is taken from this guide by Aberystwyth University and this guide by Northumbria University. To find a template of a compelling personal reasons cover letter, you can check out this guide by Nottingham Trent University.

Step 1: Set up your student finance cover letter

The first thing you need to do when writing your compelling personal reasons cover letter is to properly set it up. By this, I mean that you need to essentially get your personal details section written and then plan what you’re going to put in the rest of the cover letter.

Your personal details section is essentially the part where you are actually setting it up as a formal letter. As mentioned above, this section is going to need to include your name, your student finance number, your address, your email/ phone number as well as the date of the letter .

Then, I would suggest planning your other sections to make it easier to write them up when it comes to it. To learn more about what the key points of each of these sections are, continue reading the following steps.

Step 2: Explain what you a requesting from student finance

For student finance to be able to help you, they will need to know what you need help with. This is why it is so important that you explain what you are requesting from them in your cover letter. It can also help to put it at the start to get it out of the way before your other sections.

However, you may also feel that it fits best at the end to wrap up your cover letter. The choice on how to structure your cover letter is up to you. To get you started, you may wish to use phrases, such as “I am writing to request…”.

Step 3: Explain what your situation was to student finance

For student finance to be able to properly consider your application, they will need to know what the circumstances that led you to suspend your studies were. In this part of your cover letter, you will need to explain your compelling personal reasons. This will need to be done in some depth so make sure you put enough focus on it .

This is the part where you would explain what the situation was, how it affected you and when your problems started and ended. You will also want to write about the emotional and/or physical effects it has had on your wellbeing, which have made you unable to carry on with your studies. To do this, you may want to use phrases, such as “I experienced…” or “I suffered with…”.

You will also need to include evidence of your situation, such as a medical note for health issues or a death certificate for bereavement. While this will not be in the cover letter itself, you will likely need to refer to where this evidence comes from and what type of evidence it is .

Step 4: Explain how your situation has now improved to student finance

In order to convince student finance that the funding will go to good use, you have to explain to them how your situation has changed so that you suspending your studies again is unlikely to happen . To do this, you may wish to describe any treatment you have had and explain how it has improved your situation or describe how your situation has otherwise improved.

Everything you need to know about letters of recommendation

Oct 13, 2023

  • Recommendation letters can be an important part of applying to college, graduate school, and internships.
  • They can provide a sense of your talents and who you are as a person.
  • You’ll want to ask people who can vouch for your work ethic and relevant skills.

Whether you’re completing college applications or applying for an internship, letters of recommendation can help the decision makers decide if you’d be a good fit for their program. Letters of recommendation provide an outside perspective on your work ethic, talents, and skills . Here’s when, who, and how to ask for letters of recommendation.

When to ask for a recommendation letter

You’ll likely need letters of recommendation when applying for:

  • An undergraduate program
  • Graduate school
  • Internships
  • Post-college employment

Give yourself plenty of time to get your recommendation letters together. The people you’re asking to write them will need ample time to fine-tune their thoughts and craft their recommendations. You should aim to reach out to people between four-to-six weeks before the application due date. Jot down your application deadlines and begin thinking about who to ask. The sooner you approach them, the better.

Who to ask for a letter of recommendation

When deciding who to ask for a letter of recommendation, zero in on people you’ve worked with directly who can speak to:

  • Your ability to follow through on tasks
  • Your willingness to solve problems and work through dilemmas
  • Your ability to adapt to the unexpected
  • Your relevant skills and how they relate to the program you’re applying to
  • Your unique talents and interests
  • Your character and personality

Think about teachers, professors, coaches, club advisors, and guidance counselors who you feel comfortable asking for a letter of recommendation. Managers or mentors you’ve worked with at after-school jobs or volunteer programs may also come to mind. Choosing someone who knows you well helps ensure their recommendation will be strong and authentic.

How to ask for a letter of recommendation

Once you’ve decided who to ask, you can reach out in person, over the phone, or send them a short email to see if they’d be open to writing a letter of recommendation. Make sure to personalize the email and include why you’re asking them. Perhaps you’ve really enjoyed learning from them or see them as a mentor you respect. The goal is to ask in a way that’s warm, genuine, and professional. It’s also helpful to include key details about the request such as the deadline and information about the school or program you’re applying to.

How to highlight your accomplishments

Chances are that the people you’re asking to write recommendation letters have a lot on their plates. Helping to lighten the lift can make the process a little easier for them. A simple way to do that is to provide your résumé or list of accomplishments. This can be an easy-to-scan summary of:

  • Relevant projects you’ve worked on or times you’ve shined
  • Awards you’ve won
  • Groups and extracurricular organizations you belong to, along with any leadership roles you’ve held
  • Hardships you’ve overcome
  • Special skills you’ve demonstrated

You can also ask the letter writer to highlight why they think you’d be a good candidate for whatever you’re applying to, whether it’s an undergraduate program, master’s program , or internship.

How to follow up on a recommendation letter

If your application deadline is approaching and you haven’t received your letter yet, it’s acceptable to give the person a gentle reminder. Life happens, and they probably got sidetracked with other things. Aim to send a follow-up message 10 days before your deadline to give them enough time to complete your letter.

You can follow up via email, text, phone call, or in person, depending on your relationship. Either way, be sure to express your gratitude while reminding them of your original ask. If you’re sending an email, you can even reattach relevant information they may need, such as your résumé or list of accomplishments. What matters most is maintaining the relationship and staying on their radar.

How to say thank you for a recommendation letter

Make sure to express your gratitude to anyone who wrote a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Show your appreciation for their time and support with a personalized thank-you note.

As you move through college and internships, make it a point to connect with your professors and managers. You may need fresh recommendation letters when applying for jobs after you graduate. Having strong letters of recommendation can go a long way.

How to Get Student Loan Forgiveness in 2024

Student loan forgiveness has a mixed track record. Last summer, the Supreme Court struck down a broad plan that would’ve erased up to $20,000 per borrower. Still, student loan forgiveness is more accessible now than ever before. A handful of existing federal student loan forgiveness programs have erased $143.6 billion in student debt for 3.96 million borrowers as of March 21, according to the Education Department, with more to come this year.

The White House is currently trying to push through a narrower forgiveness ‘Plan B’ version of its failed broad forgiveness plan. The proven paths to forgiveness, however, include programs that range from income-driven repayment (IDR) plans — which cap monthly bills at a percentage of your income and forgive your remaining balance after 10 to 25 years — to niche programs for borrowers with certain loan types, jobs or school circumstances.

Here’s how to get student loan forgiveness in 2024 — and what you need to know before pursuing this path.

Check your eligibility

You must have federal student loans to qualify for a forgiveness program. Private student loans aren’t eligible.

To verify you have federal loans, go to StudentAid.gov , and try to log in or recover your account.

Next, check which types of federal student loans you have. If you have certain types of loans, like commercially held FFELP or Perkins loans, you may have to consolidate them before going after forgiveness .

Income-driven repayment

The newest IDR plan — Saving on a Valuable Education, or SAVE — is the most accessible path to forgiveness. All borrowers with federal direct loans are eligible to enroll.

The SAVE plan forgives remaining student debt in as little as 10 years if you have an original balance of $12,000 or less, and in up to 20 or 25 years for other borrowers. While working toward forgiveness, your monthly bills could be $0 per month if you earn less than $32,800 as an individual or $67,500 as a family of four; otherwise, they’ll be capped at 5%-10% of your income.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness

If you work for a qualifying government or nonprofit employer, you could be eligible for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) . This program erases your remaining balance after a decade of repayment.

“Generally, the PSLF program is the best one if you have access to it,” says Scott Stark, a financial coach and certified financial planner at Financial Finesse, a workplace financial wellness company.

Other forgiveness programs

Outside of IDR and PSLF, your student loan forgiveness options may include:

Teacher Loan Forgiveness , if you work in a qualifying low-income school.

Borrower defense to repayment , if you think your school defrauded you.

Closed school discharge , if your school closed during or shortly after your time there.

Perkins loan cancellation , if you have Perkins loans and work in public service.

State-based student loan payment assistance , if you work in health care or are willing to relocate to a new area.

Do the math

Use the Education Department’s loan simulator to see how much debt you could get erased under various forgiveness programs and repayment plans, how much your monthly payments could be and how long you’ll be in repayment.

If an IDR plan will result in you paying more interest for a longer period or paying off your debt before getting forgiveness, then it may not be a good choice for you. (Public Service Loan Forgiveness also requires enrollment in an IDR plan.)

“It really is a case-by-case kind of thing, but generally speaking, for people whose income is relatively high compared to their student debt loads, the income-driven repayment plans can be pretty unattractive,” says Tisa Silver Canady, founder of the Maryland Center for Collegiate Financial Wellness. “It might behoove them to just stay on a balance-driven plan and pay extra when they feel it makes sense.” Making extra payments toward the principal while on a balance-driven plan — like the standard 10-year plan , which splits your loan into 120 payments — allows you to shrink your debt faster and reduce total interest costs.

On the other hand, if the math for IDR works out such that borrowers can have smaller payments and keep more of their money to reach other financial goals, pursuing forgiveness is a good option, Stark says.

Prepare for a future tax bomb

IDR student loan forgiveness is exempt from federal taxes through 2025. After that, any amount forgiven could result in a student loan tax bomb . A small number of states tax IDR forgiveness, too.

It’s important to plan for a tax bomb if your forgiveness timeline will extend past 2025. Put a small amount of money aside each month to cover your future tax bill, Stark says.

Use the loan simulator to determine how much forgiveness you could ultimately receive: Your taxable income will increase by that amount in the year you get forgiveness. In some cases, the forgiveness could push you into a higher tax bracket, which could further increase your tax burden. If the amount you have to set aside each month to cover the tax bill is larger than the amount you’d save on the IDR plan, it might not be worth it.

Loan balances forgiven through PSLF, Teacher Loan Forgiveness, borrower defense to repayment, closed school discharge and Perkins loan cancellation are exempt from federal taxation.

Change your repayment plan

If you decide IDR forgiveness is the right choice, you must switch to an IDR plan like SAVE.

To sign up for an IDR plan, submit an online application at StudentAid.gov/IDR or call your student loan servicer.

You must also sign up for an IDR plan if you’re striving for PSLF. Choose the plan that gives you the smallest monthly bill to maximize the amount you could get forgiven after 10 years. It’s a good idea to submit your PSLF employer verification form each year to stay on track for forgiveness, Canady says. You can do this through the Education Department’s online PSLF Help Tool .

How to Write a Letter for Education Loan Application in India

' src=

Congratulations on receiving an acceptance letter from your dream university! Now, to finance your tuition fee, living costs, and other expenses, you can consider opting for education finance. It is a ray of hope for students who aspire to study in premier institutes and are looking to manage their educational expenses.

Loans for education come with a pretty simple application process. But, first things first, you must write a loan application letter to the lender requesting them to sanction your loan. Read on to understand how to write an application for education loan.

How to write application for loan

After you have selected a lender, you must write a loan application letter to them explaining your academic and financial situation. Here’s what you should include in your letter.

  • Recipient’s address

First, you must mention the Manager’s name you are writing the letter to, the name of the lending institution, branch details, and the branch address.

  • Applicant address

Next, include your name and address.

Once you have mentioned the address details, write the date. This doubles up as the date of application when the lender approves your letter.

After the date, write the subject line or the purpose of the letter. So, make sure it is to the point and conveys the intent of writing the letter.

Once you mention the email subject, address the authority directly in the salutation.

Now comes the meat of the application. This section must include all the details required by the lender to grant you a loan. So, introduce yourself, talk about the institute you have been accepted into and the degree you wish to pursue and mention why you need the loan. Make sure to include your academic records, entrance/foreign exam scorecard, acceptance letter, and other relevant documents to make a convincing case for why you deserve the opportunity. Lastly, assure the lender that you will complete your studies and fetch a good job and close the letter.

Here’s a sample letter to make things clear for you.

Sample letter for education finance

The Bank Manager

Date: XX/X/20XX

Subject: Application for the education loan

I am writing this letter to apply for a student loan to pursue higher education in English Literature. I recently completed my Bachelor’s in English Literature from the University of Delhi with a 9.7 CGPA. Besides, I scored 85% marks in the All India Senior School Certificate Examination (AISSCE) with a Science background.

I applied to the University of Pennsylvania for a full-time Master’s degree in English and have been selected for the programme. The total hostel fee, cost of education accessories, tuition fee, and boarding expenses in the United States is approximately Rs. 20 lakhs.

Due to my humble family background, I’m unable to afford the cost and require financial assistance. I request you to grant me a personal loan for higher education at this prestigious university. I will repay the loan amount on time.

I have attached my academic records, credentials, acceptance letter and other relevant documents with the letter. I am looking forward to your response.

Thank you. Yours sincerely, Anita

After formally putting your request forward with aletter for education loan, you must wait for the lender to approve and sanction your loan.

Biden's latest student-loan forgiveness plan brings questions for borrowers: What to know

how to write application letter student loan

Some student loan borrowers may not take advantage of President Joe Biden's final plan to eliminate debt for millions because they don't know if they're eligible, don't understand the process or think it is a scam.

On Monday, Biden promised student loan relief by the fall with his final proposal. This plan comes less than a year after the Supreme Court blocked his initial attempt.

Under the proposed plan, more than 4 million borrowers who have been paying down their student loans for 20 years or more could have their debt completely canceled, according to the White House. The plan would also help more than 10 million borrowers by giving them $5,000 or more in relief, Biden's administration said.

Biden also aims to help 23 million borrowers by eliminating interest past the original loan amounts.

How to apply for student loan forgiveness?

If eligible for debt relief, borrowers should periodically check their emails for updates from their student loan servicers and Federal Student Aid .

Learn more: Best personal loans

While Biden works on his final proposal, eligible borrowers can apply on the Federal Student Aid website for other kinds of relief, including if they have a disability , work for a nonprofit , or are a teacher , government employee or medical professional .

Borrowers repaying their loans for 20 to 25 years can apply for income-driven repayment (IDR) loan forgiveness.

Several other loan forgiveness options are available on the Federal Student Aid website, but borrowers should check if they're eligible by looking closely at each selection. Victims of forgery, borrowers who declared bankruptcy and Perkins loan borrowers are examples of individuals eligible for forgiveness.

What document explains your rights and responsibilities as a federal student loan borrower?

A Master Promissory Note (MPN) is a binding legal document borrowers must sign before they receive a federal student loan promising they'll repay the loans and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education, according to Federal Student Aid.

Student loan debt: Averages and other statistics in 2024

There is one MPN for direct subsidized/unsubsidized loans and a different MPN for direct PLUS loans. All MPNs can be signed electronically.

"You may receive more than one loan under an MPN over a period of up to 10 years to pay for your or your child’s educational costs, as long as the school is authorized to use the MPN in this way and chooses to do so," the Federal Student Aid website says.

Am I eligible for student loan relief?

By checking their emails, borrowers typically receive messages explaining whether they're eligible for relief and what type they can apply for.

If not signed up for emails, borrowers can visit the Federal Student Aid website and check their eligibility by hovering over the "loan forgiveness" tab and clicking "types of loan forgiveness."

Once the borrower clicks "types of loan forgiveness," they will be taken to a page showing the available relief options. Borrowers then can check their eligibility.

Be aware of student loan scams

Federal Student Aid warns borrowers to be aware of scams because they "might be contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee."

"You never have to pay for help with your federal student aid," the office's website says. "Make sure you work only with the U.S. Department of Education, the office of Federal Student Aid, and our loan servicers, and never reveal your personal information or account password to anyone."

The emails to borrowers come from [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected].

Borrowers can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission by calling 1-877-382-4357 or by visiting reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Student loan scam involving 'Mission Hills Federal'

The Federal Trade Commission announced March 13 that it is sending more than $4.1 million in refunds to 27,584 borrowers who "lost money to student loan debt relief scammers who lured consumers with fake loan forgiveness claims and pocketed their money," according to a news release.

The scheme, which "tricked students into paying hundreds to thousands of dollars" since 2014, went by many names including Mission Hills Federal, Federal Direct Group, National Secure Processing and The Student Loan Group.

The group made the borrowers pay "illegal upfront fees and pretended to lower consumers’ monthly student loan payments," according to the FTC. The operators also deceived borrowers into sending their monthly student loan payments directly to them by "falsely claiming to take over the servicing of the consumers’ loans," the agency said.

"In reality, few payments were actually applied to consumers’ student loans and in many cases, none at all," the FTC said. "Instead, the defendants kept consumers’ money for themselves."

Sen. Schmitt: Illegals 'Prioritized' for Govt College Loans

By Nick Koutsobinas    |   Wednesday, 03 April 2024 06:02 PM EDT

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., has requested a response from Education Secretary Miguel Cardona explaining why the federal college loan applications for prospective American students are mired in a "bureaucratic disaster" while the applications of illegal migrants are "prioritized."

In his letter to Cardona, sent Wednesday, Schmitt pointed out that despite having ample time and resources, the Department of Education has not successfully implemented the new, simplified Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The simplified FAFSA comes from the FAFSA Simplification Act, which passed in 2020 with the intention of streamlining the application process by reducing the number of questions from 108 to 38. Yet, according to the senator, prospective students found themselves unable to access the form until December 2023, resulting in significant delays.

Noting the lack of availability, Schmitt added that "colleges and universities did not begin to receive student data from completed applications until the end of March 2024, delaying the process further."

"Now, students are not expected to receive financial aid letters until April or even May. This is well past many universities' decision timelines and most final decisions are required before mid-May."

"The impact of this bureaucratic disaster has been keenly felt in Missouri," the senator continued.

Citing a report from Kansas City's NPR outlet KCUR , Schmitt conveyed that the rollout of the simplified FAFSA, while marketed as a streamlined approach for federal loans, "has been marked by glitches, delays, and updates complicating the process for families."

But what's more concerning than the Department of Education's mere administrative failures, or the "unnecessary and legally dubious loan bailout initiatives," is that "the Department has prioritized the applications of families with illegal aliens, devising 'workarounds' and loopholes to allow these applications to be submitted."

This potential obfuscation of the federal college loan application, according to Schmitt, relegates working American families dependent on FAFSA determinations to the end of the line.
