What is IELTS Writing Task 1?

The IELTS Writing Test has two tasks.

Firstly, IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic specifically checks your ability to analyze visuals like charts, tables, graphs, maps, process diagrams, and so on.

You'll get different types of visual prompts for Academic vs General Training:

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic deals with visual data representation. The types of IELTS Writing Task 1 questions are:

• Line graphs

Process diagrams

Combination (mixed) charts.

IELTS General Writing Task 1  focuses on everyday functional writing. Question types include:

• Formal Letters

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic has a 3-step process. Here's a basic scaffolding for approaching any Task 1 question.

IELTS Writing Task 1 structure:

• Paraphrase the chart title, source, and date.
• Describe the main trend(s) in the data in 2-3 body paragraphs ordered logically.
• Close with an overview of the key relationships or patterns.

Let's see how this works with this IELTS Writing Task 1 question - sample bar chart response:

Sample Answer

The map shows the layout of a town currently and a proposed future plan. Overall, the town appears to be becoming more industrialized and connected through additional roads, although much of the existing structures remain unchanged.

In the present-day map, there is an airfield in the northwest that connects to a long north-south road (A2). This road has a roundabout, with another road extending eastwards across a railway line to a gas station. The future plan moves the roundabout southwards slightly and replaces the airfield with an industrial estate, with a new eastward road to the railway line. The railway itself will also be interrupted by a new roundabout near the same gas station.

In the far east of town, there is currently a town center and built-up area around Ring Road, both of which stay the same in the future plan. The proposals add a new road (A4) from the town center along the south edge of town, connecting to A2 in the west. There will also be one more street from the town center allowing passage to the east and north of town.

IELTS Writing Task 1 General

What are some key strategies for scoring higher?

To really ace Task 1, make sure you:

• Use synonyms  - Don't just copy words from the prompt. Paraphrase with your own vocabulary.
• Include units of measurement  - From the visual like millions, percentage, tons, dollars. This shows attention to detail.
• Highlight obvious contrasts or similarities  - Between data trends to make logical comparisons.
• Use linking words  - Like "while", "in addition", "on the other hand" to connect your ideas and show cohesion.
• Stick to plain English  - Don't try to sound overly complex. Keep your language clear and concise.

General Training Writing Task 1 in 5 Simple Steps

• Understand how the test is marked. Knowing the marking criteria is the best way of giving the examiner exactly what they need and nothing else.
• Decide whether the letter is formal or informal. This part is easy. If the question asks you to write to a ‘friend’, it should be an informal letter. If the question asks you to write to anyone else, it should be a formal letter. It is that simple!
• Discuss each bullet point from the question. Make sure to take a new paragraph for each bullet point. This will make your letter easy to read and understand.

How many paragraphs should I write?

Introduction

You can put the overview at the end if you'd like.

Can I use idioms?

No, you should typically avoid using idioms in Writing Task 1.

The only time this is acceptable is if you are taking the General Training test and must write an informal letter.

Should I write a conclusion for Task 1 Academic?

No. A conclusion is a summary of YOUR ideas and your opinion. Task 1 is simply reporting what you see, so there shouldn't be any of your ideas or your opinion.

Instead of a conclusion, you should write an overview.

The reason lots of people get confused about this is that some teachers, books and even one British Council website call the overview a 'conclusion'. It's not a conclusion, it's an overview.

Finally, it does not matter where you put the overview paragraph. We teach our students to put it after the introduction, but it is also fine to have it as your final paragraph.

How many words should I write?

You must write at least 150 words in Writing Task 1 (yes, the examiners will count them!)

I would suggest that you aim to write around 160-170 words for Task 1. Aiming for 20-30 words more than the required amount makes you more likely to reach the word limit without setting an unrealistic goal.

Will I lose marks if I don't write enough words?

Yes. If you don't write the required number of words, you will lose marks in 'Task Achievement' for not answering the question fully. Read more here .

Can I use contractions?

No, should not use contractions when you are writing an academic essay or formal letter. However, it is fine to use contractions in an informal letter.

IELTS practice Academic Writing test - Task 1

How to approach academic writing task 1.

In the IELTS Academic Writing test, you will have one hour to complete both of the two set writing tasks. Keep an eye on the time it takes you to complete practice Tasks 1 and 2 to make sure you don’t go too far over, and to use as a benchmark for how long you can expect each task to take you.

In the actual test, you will move from the first to the second task without a break. However, while practising, you may wish to reflect on the outcomes of practice Task 1 using the model answer provided before moving on to practice Task 2. Or you may wish to complete them both before looking at the model answers to give you a more accurate sense of timing.

Candidates ​have 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete all parts of the IELTS test. Reading, writing, and listening skills are assessed together, regardless of whether the test is paper-based or computer-based. You must learn smart strategies to help you speed up your work when taking the IELTS test.

IELTS Writing Task 1 Preparation

 In task 1, candidates must write a short report in IELTS Academic Writing by analyzing the data provided in the map, diagram, tables, or combination. It can be simple or complicated which generally depends on the type of diagram that is given in the paper. The student must showcase the graphical representation for the writing task 1 Academic and in 150 terms must write a paper in 20 minutes. If the candidates do not surpass the word cap, it would be better, so no extra credit is available for additional writing. The examples of the IELTS university-level written task 1 are a great support.

IELTS Table Chart

Table content in the IELTS writing examination is called the table chart.  In IELTS, the description of a table is the same as that of a bar graph. Candidates need to compare and contrast the data provided in the table query. Candidates should make sure that it is original and attractive while writing. Use your creativity while writing the answer. 

The candidate should evaluate whether the question is in the past, present, or future and write the answer accordingly to define the table. In addition, the IELTS  task 1 vocabulary list must also be developed to help you clarify the query effectively. It is advised that you should break the data into various parts so that you can clarify and understand it easily. Data that is special can also be found.

It is very important how you organize your answer since it represents your thinking flow. You can build your own structure because it is not governed hard and quick. The dividing of the key functions in separate paragraphs is a way of explaining the given data. This allows you to indicate your point on any key characteristic.

IELTS Graph Preparation

The question paper of IELTS typically contains a bar graph question. The measurement is similar to the graph on the line. There are also two axes in the IELTS bar chart that reflect changes over time. The diagram bars have horizontal or vertical rectangular bars. Data with 2 or more values are represented. Analyzing the issue and understanding is the first step. The questions are a short summary of the graph, graph, chart, or table instructions. It is really important to identify the core concept.

 The bar chart questions should be easy to answer, as they test your linguistic skills and not mathematical abilities. You should be able to extract and write about the main function. In the introduction, all you have to do is paraphrase the question. Synonyms may be used and the query rephrased. The language used is essential to sound natural.

IELTS Pie Chart

Pie Chart is a circular diagram that has categories mentioned with the percentage. Pie diagrams are circular diagrams, which typically show the percentages in parts or pie sections. The percentage of data it reflects is shown in each segment of the pie chart. It forms a circle when you bring together all the pieces. When you are attempting the Pie Chart question you should start with its introduction. The introduction may take up to 2 phrases and the phrase already in the question may be paraphrased when presenting it. 

 You have to compose a description of the graph in the second paragraph. You have to choose and clarify some of the key features of the map. First of all, you should take from the pie chart and describe the largest or smallest pieces. Second, recognize those who have not changed over time. You can write on any of the options, but don’t write them all.

More than One Graph

Two charts will be one of the basic task 1 questions. In this problem, you should concentrate on both diagrams – mention data on both diagrams, locate and state the main characteristics of each diagram. In contrast to the other charts, however, everything you see in the charts does not have to be defined. Select and correctly summarise the important details. When more than one graph is given make sure that you don’t miss the important information given in it. You have to focus on both the graphs so that any important information that needs to be concentrated does not skip out of our minds. Multiple graphs can be confusing but once you know the trick to go for such a question you can easily attempt such questions. 

Tips to Prepare for Writing Task 1

There are few tips that will help you attempt the writing task1 easily without any hassle. Make sure that you read all the points and understand them clearly. These tips can help you a lot. 

  1. Write an Overview 

An overview is just a summary of the important points that you encounter in the graph, process, chart, or map. It is usually 2-3 phrases long and the second paragraph you write in your essay should be. It also determines what you write in the remaining essay, as we can see below. An overview is the first thing an examiner searches since it indicates that the most relevant details can be identified from the chart or the graph and that general patterns and similarities are clearly determined. An overview is the first thing an examiner looks at since it shows the features of the chart or graph can be found and general trends and similarities are clearly defined.

The candidate needs to provide a concise description of the key characteristics. You make this by choosing 3-4 of the most important items you will see and writing them generally in the summary paragraph. Generally speaking, I mean, you can’t help something that is displayed in graph or diagram results.

2. Paraphrasing an Important Skill

Paraphrasing is an important skill needed in the writing section. Paraphrasing is the skill to change the sentence using different words and different sentence structures but having the same meaning. You are more likely to get the score you like when you know how to paraphrase. The mental processes necessary for paraphrasing will also help you to understand the issue thoroughly and this is one of the reasons behind the advice to paraphrase the question before starting with the answer. One important part of paraphrasing is using synonyms. You should have a good vocabulary to use different words with the same meaning in the sentence. This helps a lot in paraphrasing any sentence.

How much time should I spend on IELTS writing task 1 in the IELTS test?

The IELTS writing exam is divided into two sections . You have an hour to write both. Since task 1 makes up 33% of the test you should plan to spend 20 minutes on this section to ensure that you make effective use of your time.

IELTS Task 1 Marking criteria

Task 1 is marked according to the following:

• Task achievement (25%)
• Cohesion and coherence (25%)
• Vocabulary (25%)
• Grammar (25%)

IELTS Graphs, Charts or Diagrams

Academic writing task 1 requires that you summarise and compare a diagram, chart or graph, talking about the main features.

You should use at least 150 words for the task. This section is not an essay. It is a summary. You should use formal language and it must factual.

Academic writing task 1 is a report on a bar chart , pie chart, table, map diagram or process. Below we have tutorials, guiding you on how to answer the different task 1 questions.

Summarise and Compare

Read the question carefully. Academic writing task 1 may contain two to three charts which may be a line graph , a table, a pie chart , a map , a diagram or a bar chart . To do well in this task you need to take a general overview of the task.

A good description will look at trends, at highs and lows and at the times that these occurred – beginnings and endings in other words. You need to describe the key features and changes in the graphs. That means just talk about the main features and don’t try to describe everything! A great tip is to use superlatives. For example:

The most expensive item was…

The largest amount spent was…

The lowest point was…

Another useful tip for IELTS writing task 1 is to find things that were the same or similar, then contrast them with what was different. For example,

‘Sales of both sugar and salt increased during the period shown, reaching their highest prices in November. In contrast, sales of coffee fluctuated significantly.’

The Process

Start off by looking at the graphs to determine what you need to summarise and compare. Write an introduction of one to two sentences. Then offer a general overview, describing trends. The next paragraphs should get into the specifics, grouping your information according to the main features and then describing each of them.

Always bear in mind that this is a test of your English-speaking abilities. Use the appropriate vocabulary . Try to showcase as much of your vocabulary as possible and make sure that your English grammar is immaculate. Write at least 150 words – this cannot include copying any of the information from the question word for word. Paraphrasing several words in a sentence is fine.

Preparing for the Exam

The best way to prepare for the exam is to get plenty of practice beforehand. First, look at some excellent essay examples for writing task 1. There are quite a few useful links at the end of this article. Find a style or model you like and try to use some of the same phrases to describe a similar diagram, remembering to write at least 150 words. Try your hand at describing and comparing various diagrams and graphs. Send them in for an evaluation and learn from the outcomes.

Information about IELTS Writing

IELTS Writing test is made to assess your writing skills and techniques. There are two IELTS Writing modules: Academic and General. If you plan to study abroad, then you should take IELTS Academic module. And if you wish to work abroad, then you should take IELTS General module.

IELTS Writing test lasts 1 hour and consists of 2 parts : task 1 and task 2. Writing task 1 is different for Academic and General IELTS, but Writing task 2 is the same for both modules.

In Academic Writing task 1 you're asked to describe a graph, chart or diagram. And in General Writing task 1 you have to write a letter to someone. In Writing task 2 you have to write an essay on a given topic.

IELTS Academic Writing

IELTS Academic Writing module lasts 60 minutes and has 2 tasks, which must both be completed. Although it is recommended to spend approximately 20 minutes on task 1 and about 40 minutes on task 2, you can divide your time between two sections the way you prefer.

Which sources did you get this from? IELTS essay questions do not relate to only one country. However, the topic of curfew is possible. With such a topic, you would write about freedom of movement, learning independence and learning about safety, against protecting children for various reasons.

The topics are basically the same although it is unlikely GT candidates will get Space Exploration as a topic (but they could easily get this topic in the Speaking test part 3). Hi liz, I am a trainer of IELTS. Your lessons are much beneficial for me. But I have a question that while getting training I heard from trainers that we are not allowed to use personal words like we, us, he, she, him, her, our as well as words like etc. and too, too much as it effect our writing bands. So can you tell me that is it put any effect on our band of writing or not? Thank you

“etc” is an abbreviation of “et cetera”. When you give examples, choose the number of examples to give rather than use “etc”. When you explain something, be specific rather than using “etc”. It is completely fine to use pronouns, but some pronouns are used more than others. For example, the pronouns “we” and “us” are not commonly used. Also the pronouns “he/him” or she/her” are also not used a lot because we are mostly writing about people in general rather than specific people. The word “too” is used whenever it is needed. So, you see, there are no IELTS rules about this. It is just about what the likely to be used based on the aims of the essay. I have a chapter on Pronouns in the Grammar E-book which covers this.

If you can’t understand the meaning fully, hopefully you can understand the meaning partially. Of course, it will affect your score for Task Response, but not for the other marking criteria. However, most essay questions are written quite simply so you can understand. Also, your preparation should involve reviewing all common topics and over 100 essay questions.

Strict implies that they follow the dress code precisely and have very specific dress codes. For example, they have very precise rules for the length of a girls skirt and they make sure these rules are followed. In South Korea, they are even strict about the length of a girls hair and if a teacher thinks the girls hair is longer than permitted, they get a pair of scissors and cut it. That is a very strict rule about appearance. However, in the school I went to, girls had to wear ties, but the ties could be tied in any way the girl wanted. There were also rules about how short a skirt could be. But, in fact, the girls often looked very sloppy with ties in a mess and skirt very short. So, my school had rules but didn’t enforce them properly. So, struct dress codes applies to both the rules and the enforcing of those rules.

Hello Liz, I have a question to ask about agree or disagree essay. “In the future, it seems more difficult to live on the Earth. Intro: disagree, money should be spent on saving the Earth rather than doing researches on other planets 2. Body 1: no certainty about life on other planets => could waste money 3. You have the right approach. However, your third body paragraph is not needed. That forms part of body paragraph 1 = Earth is more important which is why more money should be spent on research.

If I get a question which I dont know at all in task 2, can I write something general related to that.For instance, if they asked about the importance of preserving historic places, can i just talk about history and can still get good bands for the other three criteria except for task achievement. Secondly, If I dont talk about anything about history,and I completely write offtopic, do they still consider my answer by giving 0 for task achievement,but giving appropriate band scores for the other three criteria.Thank u

1. If you don’t write about history at all, you might get band 0 for a memorised answer. Don’t change the topic because you prefer a different one. 2. If your topic is obviously off topic because you chose that – the above might apply. 3. You should always stick as close to the topic as possible. Yes, being on or off topic, only affects Task Response score – unless the above applies. 4. Hey Liz, Greetings. Can I agree on the first half and express my disapproval on the second half for the same essay?

For the same point? You would say “I agree in free education” and then in the next paragraph you would say “I don’t agree with free education”? This means you have confused the reader. In an opinion essay, the requirement of a high score is that you maintain a clear position throughout – this means one position from start to finish. This is clearly stated in the band score descriptors that IELTS have published to the public.

I think what you are talking about it actually a partial agreement (a balanced approach) to an opinion essay. You should only try this if you have been trained. it depends on the plan followed in an essay as well as question asked. for illustration, if you are asked to give only your views then you can,,or if you are asked to discuss both pros and cons of notion.In the case,you are discuss give only one side so you have to go on one side either in favour or not. You need to look at how it is phrased: more X than Y. If you think there is more X, you will also think there is less Y. This means you will explain both from your point of view. Do you see what I mean?

I have just one doubt. While studying about poverty i found that every cause of it is totally related to other one, and in this situation it becomes difficult to write two separate reasons or body paragraphs about poverty. Overpopulation, for instance, is the reason of lack of resources or services that include education, but education can be a different reason. In the similar way unemployment is another cause of pooverty, and unemploymet is also due to overpopulation.

You have plenty of ideas and that’s great. Now it is your task to select and organise. You can’t put all your ideas in your essay – you need to decide which ones to use. If the essay is about poverty (lack of money), then resource depletion isn’t really relevant. However your point about limited education is a good point. You do not need to link lack of good education to overpopulation – that isn’t necessarily connected. So, one cause is – lack of good education which helps create professionals who will pull a country out of poverty. Your second point is lack of employment – this is a clearly connected to poverty and that is a another good cause. You can add as a supporting point that overpopulation leads to too much competition for jobs that are scarce in the first place. So, you see, you need to filter your ideas and cut out any point that isn’t directly related. IELTS essays are short – only 280 words on average – you can’t list everything. So, we have cut out “resource depletion” and we have decided that “overpopulation” is a supporting point which adds problems to the lack of employment. The two main causes will be: limited education and lack of jobs, which together cause poverty both for the country, for families and for individuals. Do you see how you need to plan more after you have brainstormed. Once you have ideas, sift through them to choose only two causes that you will use. This of course is advice for a cause/solution essay where you shouldn’t have more than two causes. I hope this helps.

Coherence is about your language being easy to understand with a logical flow of ideas. Cohesion is about how ideas connect to each other (ie linking). Personally, I have given IELTS 5 times, in 6 years. Unfortunately, I have not received the required score yet. BUT, I have received in Speaking 8, reading 7, Listening 7.5, and most horrible part-writing 6.5

Those numbers were different in each time, I just compiled them in the best shape, to show the greatest achievement I could get in those hardest ever my exams. I never got any bad marks during my 8 years of medical exams. I graduated from medical school with Honors yet ENGLISH- is my weak point.

I am proactive and will try for the 6th time, I believe it will be my last time of giving IELTS, I will achieve the required and even more band.

I have never really practice writing exactly at it is given in your explanation. But this time I WILL.

This can be checked by regular urine and blood tests. It can also be dealt with by having harsher penalties for people using drugs to enhance their performance. This issue has been in the news a lot so you can read up on google. Good luck Liz

I can’t remember where I found an essay question that really stressed me out. It was something along the lines of “Some people believe the government should spend more money on defense while others believe social benefits should be favored. Discuss both sides.” I really can’t remember what it was exactly, but it concerned defense and social benefits and I honestly had no idea what I could write about on that topic. Would you have tips?

This is a current issue in many countries. Should a country aim to protect itself or should it spend money on providing benefits for its citizens. Defense is essential in order to ensure the security of a country and its citizens. Without defense, a country would be open to attack from terrorists or other countries. It is in the interest of the citizens to provide strong defenses. However, if many of a country’s citizens are in poverty or sick, the government has a responsibility to provide benefits and extra money to support them. Without these benefits, they might end up living below the poverty line. I hope some of these ideas help. Feel free to share your views. Liz

Also, I read that each paragraph should have one controlling idea. However, on subjects such as “Some believe a good salary is more important, others believe an enjoyable job is more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion” (something along those lines, I shortened it of course). I’m struggling on two things :

1. Is it ok if I write two paragraphs, one about good salary and the other about enjoying the job but with more than one idea for both? (ie. I wouldn’t have one single controlling idea). 2. Do I have to give my opinion in the intro or can I give it in the conclusion?

You must put your opinion in the introduction, body and conclusion. You could have two body paragraphs and join your opinion with one of them or you could put your opinion separately. Hello there ! Liz, I tried writing this topic and I’m trying the For-and-Against approach, and my opinion stated at the last paragraph. However, I can’t come up with any ideas as to how is radio more entertaining? How is it more entertaining than TV? Could you please help me out?

I am not clear what topic you are referring to – you need to write it in full in your message. Also I don’t know what you mean about the “for-and-against” approach. Are you talking about the discussion essay? Liz

Oh, I’m sorry, I completely forgot to mention which essay I was talking about. I was referring to “Some people think that radio is much more interesting and entertaining than TV. To what extent do you agree/disagree?” And what I meant by “for-and-against” was that I handle those type of questions like a discussion essay. I would first write the reasons why some people think it IS better than TV, and in the next paragraph I would list the reasons why others think it IS NOT. At the end I give my own opinion. However, I couldn’t think of any ways in which radio is more interesting, so I thought I would ask you for some ideas.

It is ESSENTIAL that you follow the instructions. The instructions do not say “discuss both sides”. This is an opinion essay, you decide your opinion in the introduction and explain it in the body paragraph. Never add any information which is not your opinion. If you fail to follow instructions 100%, you will get a low mark. Hi Liz, I found your blog very useful, I have my exam in a week time, I m looking to improve my scores in Reading and Writing Section of ielts, I m good enough in English I would say, What tips you would help me on this.

Listening: As I m from Asian, And you mentioned that on your video that most of the foreigners have issues when it comes to listening to Plurals. with S. any way i can differential or improve on identify it. if so

Reading for General: Ii have experienced issue with matching question type and matching of heading or where you have lists of headings to choice or pick from like for example ( i, ii, iv) or the case of matching with the paragraph ( A, B, D,H). one where of the problem i fixed was with use of Synonyms in passage vs question., with the crunch of time . Are the Any Traps.. to look out for or tips that can help me to do well with this kind of questions apart from skimming the text and identifying the main idea of the paragraph…

Writing: I have issue with sentence construction or paragraph building i have ideas or points in mind when i end up reading up a task question.

Speaking: I plan on using diverse vocabulary words. towards my topic, but how would be able to know when should i use , Could be/ Should be / Would be any differences on those, I m sure i m likely loose points on misuse of words in context or when it comes to pronounciation of words. is that the case

I don’t have time to give you all tips but here are some. For speaking, the issue you are talking about is not vocabulary, it is grammar. The use of the correct modals (should, could etc) and the use of conditional sentences all relates to your grammar accuracy and range. You will find a grammar website recommended on my useful website page in the IELTS Extra section. For writing, the key is preparing ideas for all common topics and also planning your essay so that each paragraph has a central point. If you mix your ideas up in paragraphs, you will not get a good mark for coherence and cohesion – so plan your ideas and then plan how to put them into paragraphs. After that, plan how to support them. All that should be done before you start writing. All the best Liz

Would you recommend to have a balanced view? Or single sided view? If I will choose a balanced view, I think I still need to state clearly which side I preferred. Is that correct? Thanks

You can get a good score with either approach. A one sided approach choose one side (either agree or disagree). The balanced approach is a specific opinion which doesn’t fully agree or fully disagree. I’ll soon be releasing a video to buy which explains in detail how to do both approaches for the opinion essay. I’ll post a link when it’s ready. Liz
