Located in Aberdeen, South Dakota, with additional campuses throughout the state, Presentation College grants both bachelor's and associate's degrees in: * Allied Health * Arts and Sciences * Business * Education * Social Work Since enrollment is deliberately kept below 1,000, students get to work closely with one another as well as with their instructors. Outside of class, there are also many opportunities to meet fellow students while also serving the religious mission of the Catholic faith. In addition to regularly held campus religious services, Presentation College offers chances to get involved in student fellowship and local charitable service. Presentation even sponsors mission trips abroad. Presentation College notifies applicants within two weeks of submitting their application. Admissions requirements include a high school diploma or GED, a minimum grade point average of 2.0 and minimum scores on the SAT or ACT. Home-schooled and transfer students are also accepted. Financial aid awards may consist of loans, grants, work-study and/or scholarships. The main criteria used for determining loan, grant and work-study eligibility are financial need and one's status with the Department of Education. A student's academic performance is used for determining scholarship eligibility. Both partial and full tuition scholarships are awarded, depending on one's grades and test scores.

The Types of Colleges: The Basics

Find the right college for you., sorting out colleges by their types.

Is a college the same thing as a university? What does "liberal arts" mean? Why are some colleges called public and others private? Knowing the basics in regard to different types of colleges is imperative to making the right decision.

Public and Private Colleges

Public colleges are funded by local and state governments and usually offer lower tuition rates than private colleges, especially for students who are residents of the state where a college is located.

Private colleges rely on tuition, fees, and non-government funding sources. Generous financial aid packages for students are often available thanks to private donations.

For-Profit Colleges

For-profit institutions are businesses that typically offer career training. Although these colleges offer a variety of degree programs, it's wise to exercise caution when applying to a for-profit school. The degree programs often come at a higher cost, meaning students graduate with more debt. Credits earned may not transfer to other colleges so be sure to check with the admissions office at each institution.

Four-year and two-year colleges

Four-year institutions are referred to as undergraduate colleges. Four-year colleges specifically offer bachelor's degree programs. These include universities and liberal arts colleges.

Two-year colleges offer certificate programs that can be completed in under two years. They also offer two-year associate degrees. These include community colleges, vocational-technical colleges, and career colleges.

Liberal Arts Colleges

These institutions offer numerous courses in liberal arts in areas such as literature, history, languages, mathematics, and life sciences. Most of these institutions are private and offer four-year bachelor's degree programs. These colleges prepare students for a multiplicity of careers as well as graduate studies

Universities

Universities are larger institutions that offer a wider variety of academic majors and degree options. These schools provide bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. Most universities contain several smaller colleges, such as colleges of education, engineering, or health sciences. These colleges can prepare you for a wide range of careers or for graduate study.

Community Colleges

Community colleges offer two-year associate degrees that prepare undergraduates for four-year institutions offering bachelor programs. They also provide career-specific associate degrees and certificates. Community colleges are an affordable option because of their low tuition costs. 

What is the difference between a college and a university?

A college is a smaller school that may offer a wide variety of educational programs or more focused specializations for those seeking undergraduate degrees. Standing alone or as part of a larger institution, a college is often a private institution with a lower student population and smaller class sizes. On the other hand, a university is a larger school offering both undergraduate and graduate-level degrees. Because they’re a component of a university's doctoral programs, such institutions also serve as research facilities for educational advancement.

Vocational-Technical and Career Colleges

Vocational-technical and career colleges offer specialized training in a particular industry or career. Areas of study include the culinary arts, firefighting, dental hygiene, and medical-records technology. These colleges usually offer students certificates or associate degree programs.

Colleges with a Special Focus

Some colleges focus on a specific interest or student population. These include:

  • Arts colleges
  • Single-sex colleges
  • Religiously affiliated colleges
  • Specialized mission colleges

Arts Colleges

Conservatories and colleges of this variety focus on the arts. In addition to regular coursework, these institutions provide training in areas such as photography, music, theater, sculpture, drawing, or fashion design. Most of these schools offer associate or bachelor's degrees in the fine arts or a specialized field.

Single-Sex Colleges

Some private colleges are specifically for men or women.

Religiously Affiliated Colleges

Some private, higher-education institutions are connected to a religious faith. Such connections may simply be historic in nature. Others incorporate religious study into day-to-day student life.

Specially Designated Colleges

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) focus on educating African American students. Colleges and universities are designated Hispanic-serving institutions (HSIs) when at least 25% of the full-time undergraduate students are Hispanic. HBCUs and HSIs may offer programs, services, and activities targeted to the underrepresented students they serve.

What is better, a university or a college?

Those who prefer a more intimate experience with a greater connection to faculty may prefer a college. However, a university may be better for those looking for a broader range of programs and more learning facilities. The ultimate answer will depend on your personal preferences and the school in question. Both colleges and universities can provide a rewarding educational experience.

What to Do Now That You Know About the Different Types of Colleges

Now that you’re familiar with the types of institutions available, you should decide which one will suit your future goals. It’s often helpful to create a vision board of what you plan to achieve before deciding how you plan to achieve it. Take some time to think about your trajectory while keeping the knowledge of these various types of schools in mind. If you need direction after you assess your needs, you may find it helpful to talk to your school's guidance office, a college recruiter, or a college alum to work through any other questions you might have.

Brad Stevens Addresses Rumors of Leaving Celtics for College Coaching Job

In this story:

When Brad Stevens joined the Boston Celtics for the 2013-14 season, he left a Butler University men's basketball head coaching job that he held for six years. He finished his tenure with the Bulldogs with a 166–49 record—the second-best winning percentage in school history (minimum 100 games coached).

Stevens, a native of Zionsville, Indiana, enjoyed a fruitful career at the Indianapolis-based university before entering the NBA ranks.

From coach to President of Basketball Operations, Stevens has found a home in Boston. Yet no matter how long he spends with the Celtics, he will constantly be connected to college jobs, especially ones that pop up in his home state of Indiana.

Seth Davis of CCBS Sports tweeted as recently as Apr. 14 of this year about Stevens potentially heading back to college. “Don’t rule it out,” Davis tweeted, hinting at the possibility of him being linked to an Indiana gig that could open up in the near future.

When asked about the connections on Tuesday, Stevens shook off the idea.

“I don’t get into any of the rumor stuff,” Stevens said. “I’ve got a heck of an opportunity here. We’ve been here 11 years now and got the chance to see this team do a lot of cool things and go a long way. 

“Our goals have been the same since we’ve moved here. We’d like to get over that hump. I’ve got plenty enough to do right now rather than think about all that stuff.” 

Among the potential college basketball head coaching gigs that could become available, Mike Woodson’s position at the University of Indiana stands out. The Hoosiers missed the tournament this year, but Woodson will reportedly be back on the bench as the leader next season.

'The Catch' 2024: Pairings of NFL players, anglers released for annual saltwater fishing tournament on CBS

Kayvon thibodeaux, raheem mostert are among 14 nfl players who'll compete alongside all-star anglers this weekend.

Some of the  NFL's  elite are set to team up with the Sport Fishing Championship's best saltwater anglers, as the team pairings for the second annual SFC "The Catch" powered by Verizon have been released. The made-for-TV tournament is set to air Saturday, April 20, at 3 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.

The tournament will take place at Pier Sixty-Six in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with seven boats that will be manned by notable pairings of  NFL  players along with SFC Billfish Championship top anglers. The tournament will use the SFC's standard billfish catch-and-release scoring system.

Here are the team pairings for The Catch:

Gypsea / Team OluKai

  • Gerry McGraw (owner)
  • Jordan Sanford (Mate)
  • Dalvin Cook (former Pro Bowl running back)
  • James Cook ( Buffalo Bills )

Team OluKai features the defending champions of The Catch in McGraw and Sanford, who was voted by fans as an SFC All-Star in 2023. They're joined by former Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook of Minnesota Vikings fame and his brother James Cook, a rusher who is coming off his first Pro Bowl season with the Bills.

Rising Son's / Team Verizon

  • Toby Berthelot (owner)
  • Jaselyn Berthelot (angler)
  • Alvin Kamara ( New Orleans Saints )
  • Raheem Mostert ( Miami Dolphins )

Team Verizon features the Berthelots, SFC Championship Fish Division winners each of the last two years. They may get it done on the water, but they'll be joined by two running backs who do their damage on land. They will be joined by Kamara, who has had at least 1,100 all-purpose yards every season, and Mostert, who's fresh off his first 1,000-yard rushing season.

MECA hosts job fair in search of workers for College World Series

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The College World Series is just around the corner, and event organizers are already preparing for it.

The Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority (MECA) was taking applications and doing job interviews. at Charles Schwab Field on Wednesday. They were looking to add people for CWS roles like crowd managers, ticket sellers and ushers.

Those games are more than a month away, and officials told 6 News it takes hundreds of staffers to help host them.

“It maybe seems a little early to be thinking about College World Series, but we know it takes hundreds of people—specifically our event staffers—to help pull off that event without a hitch,” said MECA communications Vice President Kristyna Engdahl. So this is why right now, we’re thinking about getting the stadium staffed up with people to help work and be a guide for visitors who come into the facility.”

MECA said positions start at $14.50 an hour.

This hiring event was not just for CWS positions, but also for other events that happen at MECA’s facilities.

“This is casual, part-time work based on what events that we have going on,” Engdahl said. “So that could be something as big as the College World Series, it could be a concert at the CHI Health Center arena, or we also have things going on all the time over in our convention center too.”

If you couldn’t make it to Wednesday’s job fair, MECA said those opportunities are always posted online .

NLRB Ruling Protects Drivers and Sets Union Election for May

(WASHINGTON) – After a vigorous argument from the Teamsters, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has ruled in favor of 80 drivers at United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI) in Sarasota, Fla., refusing to accept the company’s plans to outsource jobs to notorious nonunion employer J.B. Hunt. The decision by the NLRB protects jobs and safeguards the rights of UNFI workers seeking union representation with Teamsters Local 79 in Tampa, Fla.

“UNFI’s attempt to outsource jobs was nothing more than a desperate, union-busting tactic to stop drivers from becoming Teamsters. The company’s actions were shameful and illegal and won’t be tolerated,” said Tom Erickson, Director of the Teamsters Warehouse Division. “UNFI continues to make bad decisions at the expense of its workers. The Teamsters will fight this anti-union employer in every avenue, at every level. This ruling reaffirms UNFI workers’ right to representation in the workplace without interference from management.”

Based on UNFI’s obstinate refusal to provide pertinent evidence that its drivers would actually be laid off, the NLRB ordered an election to be conducted on May 4 and 5 and the votes to be counted immediately.

“I was in tears when I got the news that we were going to be able to keep our jobs and move forward with our election. This was a huge win and a relief for all of us,” said Patricia Morris, a seven-year driver at UNFI in Sarasota. “As a former UPSer, I know the value of being a Teamster firsthand and how beneficial representation will be for us at UNFI. We’re already seeing results. Without the Teamsters, we could have lost our jobs.” 

The NLRB is continuing to investigate whether UNFI also committed unfair labor practices (ULPs) when it subcontracted driving jobs to J.B. Hunt. The Teamsters have active organizing campaigns at UNFI facilities in Pompano Beach, Fla., and Harrisburg, Pa., where the company is also attempting to outsource jobs to prevent drivers from organizing. The Teamsters have filed ULPs and are currently in litigation for workers in both locations.

With State Bans on D.E.I., Some Universities Find a Workaround: Rebranding

Welcome to the new “Office of Access and Engagement.” Schools are renaming departments and job titles to try to preserve diversity programs.

At the University of Tennessee, the campus D.E.I. program is now called the Division of Access and Engagement.

Louisiana State University also rebranded its diversity office after Jeff Landry, a Trump-backed Republican, was elected governor last fall. Its Division of Inclusion, Civil Rights and Title IX is now called the Division of Engagement, Civil Rights and Title IX.

And at the University of Oklahoma, the diversity office is now the Division of Access and Opportunity .

In what appears to be an effort to placate or, even head fake, opponents of diversity and equity programs, university officials are relaunching their D.E.I. offices under different names, changing the titles of officials, and rewriting requirements to eliminate words like “diversity” and “equity.” In some cases, only the words have changed.

For some universities, the opposition to diversity programs comes at a challenging time. They face an incoming student shortage, the result of declining birthrates and skepticism of the value of an expensive college degree. Others are worried about how the ban on race-conscious admissions will affect the complexion of their campuses.

In either case, many college officials feel they need D.E.I. offices to market to an increasingly diverse generation of students and the faculty who might attract them. While no two campus diversity programs are exactly alike, they often preside over a variety of functions, including operating student cultural centers, ensuring regulatory compliance and hosting racial bias workshops for students and faculty members.

Conservative critics have questioned the cost of what they call D.E.I. bureaucracies, which in some places have budgets reaching into the tens of millions of dollars, and attacked the programs for being left-wing, indoctrination factories.

In a recent webinar making the case for the continuation of D.E.I. efforts, Khalil Gibran Muhammad, a professor of history, race and public policy at the Harvard Kennedy School, said the backlash is based on “a few anecdotal examples of some terrible training module that went haywire.”

In announcing the renaming of the Louisiana State D.E.I. program, the school's president, William F. Tate IV, said that there had been no political pressure.

But he also recently told the faculty senate that “we most certainly have paid attention to the ripple effects that have happened to campuses around the country.” He vowed that the university, one of the most diverse in the Southeastern Conference, is “still committed to D.E.I.”

Todd Woodward, a university spokesman, said that the idea of “engagement,” which is now used instead of “inclusion,” has been the centerpiece of the university’s strategic plan since before Governor Landry was elected.

According to The Chronicle of Higher Education , at least 82 bills opposing D.E.I. in higher education have been filed in more than 20 states since 2023. Of those, 12 have become law, including in Idaho, Indiana, Florida and Texas.

This has led to layoffs and closures. The University of Florida recently announced that it would lay off more than a dozen diversity employees. At the University of Texas at Austin, the Multicultural Engagement Center closed. And about 60 administrators received notices that they would lose their jobs, according to the state chapters of the N.A.A.C.P. and American Association of University Professors. Some Texas campuses shut down their L.G.B.T.Q. centers.

But some schools, even in states with D.E.I. crackdowns, have reacted more moderately.

Florida State University, in Tallahassee, seems to be taking a “damage mitigation approach,” Will Hanley, a history professor at F.S.U., said in an interview.

The school has reshuffled jobs and turned the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office into the Office of Equal Opportunity Compliance and Engagement .

But there have been limits to how far it will go.

F.S.U. students are required to take two “diversity” courses, which include dozens of topics like Buddhist ethics, German literature and L.G.B.T.Q. history. A faculty committee recently proposed renaming the requirement “perspectives and awareness.”

The faculty senate rejected the idea. In the senate meeting, Dr. Hanley, who specializes in the Middle East, said that the new name would obfuscate the requirement’s very intent.

“In the context of attacks on D.E.I., I wondered if changing the name of this requirement gives weight to those attacks,” he said, according to minutes of the meeting.

In Georgia, David Bray, a finance professor at Kennesaw State University, sees things another way, and says that diversity officials should have been eliminated rather than given a new title. Kennesaw State announced last December that its diversity chief would now be the vice president overseeing the Division of Organizational Effectiveness, Leadership Development and Inclusive Excellence .

The move came after the state Board of Regents approved a policy change barring Georgia’s 26 public colleges from requiring applicants and employees to fill out diversity statements.

“It’s the same lipstick on the ideological pig,” said Dr. Bray, who is gay and opposes diversity programs, arguing that they promote equal outcomes rather than equal opportunity. “As soon as D.E.I. was uncovered as political left, they now reinvent the language and have morphed into the ‘sense of belonging’ crew.”

But for many administrators, name changes are often an attempt to keep the mission of diversity programs intact.

Donde Plowman, the chancellor of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, told the faculty senate in November that the school had “not historically done well” attracting students from underrepresented groups to its campus. The percentage of Black students declined between 2020 and 2023, from 5.5 percent of total enrollment to 4.2 percent.

After a professor asked whether prospective faculty and lawmakers “looking for red meat” would be put off by the name change of the D.E.I. program, the Division of Diversity and Engagement, Dr. Plowman said, “What has happened is those words have become weaponized — they create noise and distractions away from the real work.”

Thus, the newly renamed Division of Access and Engagement.

Dr. Plowman has “consistently discussed the change to access and engagement on campus as a broadening of our mission to reach and support students, faculty and staff,” said Tisha Benton, a spokeswoman for the chancellor.

Tennessee lawmakers seemed wise to the workaround. A bill introduced in January specifically stated that no such offices should be operating “regardless of name or designation.”

The legislation had seemed destined for passage in the overwhelmingly Republican legislature. But the mood shifted during a committee meeting after members considered a letter from the Knoxville Jewish Alliance, which expressed concern that the ban would limit how the University of Tennessee reached out with support for Jewish students.

The bill was killed, unanimously, on a voice vote.
