The history behind Khalid's 2017 rise to fame

khalid biography

In spring 2016, few El Pasoans knew a 17-year-old teenager by the name of Khalid Donnel Robinson.

Fast-forward to the final days of 2017, and the whole country, and a lot of people worldwide, have heard of the singer-songwriter, now simply known as Khalid.

But in those dwindling days of his senior year at Americas High, Khalid merely wanted to have a new song up on his Soundcloud page before prom. Soundcloud is a social media website and app used by artists and fans to share music.

The song he came up with was "Location," and it was co-written by himself and a handful of producers and musicians in El Paso and Atlanta.

A LOOK BACK: Khalid releases new video for 'Shot Down'

Khalid debuts title track off 'American Teen'

The song would launch Khalid from an unknown military kid who moved to El Paso shortly before his senior year in high school, to a nationally known, acclaimed R&B and pop sensation with an MTV Award for Best New Artist and, count 'em, five Grammy Award nominations.

This is a look back at Khalid's time in El Paso, and his meteoric rise to fame, as told in various interviews with a few key players in the El Paso Times and other media outlets and through social media.

The players

Khalid: The singer's debut single "Location" peaked at No. 8 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, No. 2 on the Hot R&B Songs chart and No. 16 on its Hot 100 singles chart; the song has sold the equivalent of 3 million copies nationally, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Khalid's debut album, "American Teen," peaked at No. 4 on Billboard's albums chart and No. 1 on its R&B albums chart. He is nominated for five Grammy Awards including Best New Artist, Best R&B Song for "Location" and best Urban Contemporary Album. The 60th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held Jan. 28 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Khalid spoke to the El Paso Times in a phone interview prior to his concert at Tricky Falls in February.

Tunji Balogun, vice president of A&R, RCA Records:  Balogun is a record company executive who has worked with a number of acclaimed hip-hop and R&B artists, including Bryson Tiller, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and 50 Cent. Balogun discovered Khalid through Soundcloud. He spoke to the El Paso Times in a phone interview in January.

Kylie Jenner:  Reality TV and social media star.

Kristopher Rivera, former El Paso Times reporter:  Rivera attended a sold-out concert in Washington, D.C., during Khalid's first tour. This story contains excerpts from Rivera's review for the Times' entertainment blog, The Beat.

Dave Rocco, g lobal head of artist marketing for Spotify:  In March, Spotify sponsored a special surprise concert for Khalid's "biggest fans" at Americas High.

Patricia Cuevas, principal at Americas High: Cuevas called Khalid one of "her chiples," or spoiled students, while he was enrolled at Americas High.

Khalid's family moves to El Paso, summer 2015

Khalid: I didn’t feel like I had a home until I moved to El Paso. The love and the friendships I made were influential. El Paso is where I started. I don’t feel like I’d be making the music I’m making now if I hadn’t gone there. Everyone showed a lot of support at my high school. That’s what crafted my interest in recording. I always wanted to do music, record, but I never had the confidence to do it.

Record labels take notice, April 2016

Balogun: I think the first song I heard was "Stuck On U." A friend of mine sent it to me. I was struck by how mature the lyrics were. (Khalid) was only 17 at the time. He became an artist I was watching. I got more and more impressed with each release. He put up a Frank Ocean cover (“Lost”), then two more songs, “Coaster” and “Would You.” They kept getting better. I first reached out to him in April (2016).

Recording 'Location,' spring 2016

Khalid: It was my first time recording in Atlanta. I started the chorus in Atlanta. I was around different producers like Syk Sense (who produced the original beat for “Location”). I was inspired by the culture there and I was trying to find a sound. I went through a long studio session and I almost quit. Syk came to me and asked if I wanted to continue, and I was like, “Hell, yeah.” I took the chorus back to El Paso and recorded (the verses) at Beacon Hill (Recording Studios). I had friends, my mom, all these people around. And I wrote it all there. I took bits and pieces from drafts on Twitter and I put it in a song.

Khalid uploads 'Location' to his Soundcloud page, spring 2016

Khalid: I pushed to release “Location.” Senior prom was right around the corner. I was like, “Damn, I need to get a song out." ... I put it on Soundcloud like, “Let’s see what this does.”

Balogun: When he put out “Location,” it was like, “Oh, my god. This kid knows how to make a hit, in addition to being a talented vocalist and being ahead of his age." With “Location,” the stars aligned.

Kylie Jenner posts 'Location' on Snapchat, May 27, 2016

@TheGreatKhalid on Twitter, May 27: I can’t believe Kylie Jenner is listening to my song ‘Location’ on her Snapchat story.

Khalid graduates from Americas High, where he was elected Prom King and Most Likely to Go Platinum:

@TheGreatKhalid on Twitter, May 28: I woke up from my high school graduation and @KylieJenner is listening to my song "Location" for the 2nd day in a row.

Khalid readies debut album, 'American Teen,' August-December 2016

Balogun:  He had already built his own community around himself. ... We can see that there’s no reason to delay in putting out music, especially in 2017. He’s a millennial. He’s 18 years old. Kids his age don’t need (outside) validation to love an artist. They’ve bought in. He makes music very quickly and we had enough music to go ahead and make a (full-length) project. I felt it was important for him to take advantage of what he was writing about, which was his high school experience, being young, disillusioned and trying to find love. In reality, (the reason RCA put out his album so quickly) was him. He’s just that good. Why would we wait?

Khalid embarks on first national tour, January-February 2017

Khalid: We sold out New York City, Los Angeles. A lot of shows are already sold out. It gives me the confidence and a sense of excitement for the next tour.

Balogun: We were nervous at first to put him out on the road, but he’s stepped up to the challenge. He’s never done a lot of shows, maybe three or four before we signed him. But he grew up doing plays and choir. He’s been singing and performing all his short life. He really wanted this. He stepped up and really delivered. I can see the growth. He’s making it his own, like he did with songwriting and recording. He’s a natural.

Rivera:  The night of Jan. 21, in the Adams Morgan strip (in Washington, D.C.), Khalid played to a sold-out crowd in a small intimate basement at Songbyrd. About a hundred fans lined up, while some scavenged for an extra ticket. ... At the end of the night, Khalid had a line of fans waiting to meet him. While meeting fans, Khalid was ecstatic to hear a song playing at the club by another upcoming El Paso artist, Evander Griiim.

Khalid performs at a sold-out Tricky Falls in Downtown, Feb. 4

Khalid: It’s really special. I’ve gotten a lot of requests to do it at a bigger venue. I want my first El Paso show to be super personal — as personal as you can get with 1,000-plus people. I feel like it’s going to be a growing experience for me. People are asking for a bigger venue, but I want it to be a growing experience for me. This is where I started and imagine what I’m going to do later on. At the same time, it’s for fans who were able to buy tickets early and supported me early. People bought tickets after the first tweet. It feels good when people genuinely support you; it’s very special. A lot of people might be upset (I didn’t perform at a bigger venue), but it’s not going to be my only El Paso show.

'American Teen' released, March 3

@TheGreatKhalid on Twitter, Jan. 31: March 3. My debut album. The day my life changes forever.

Balogun:  He wrote every song on this album and came up with all the concepts; he’s an original. He’s a once-every-20-years kind of artist; I really believe that. I’ve worked with a lot of artists, but no one this talented at 18 years old. His limit is whatever his dreams are. … I believe we have all the ingredients for a legendary artist.”

Khalid:  It's surreal. It's a moment of humility for me. I get to go back to my roots and look at a field that I saw in high school, walk around the halls. It keeps me level-headed.

Rocco:  Khalid’s deep connection to El Paso made it the perfect place to celebrate the release of his debut album, "American Teen," with his family, friends, fans and city that inspired him.

Cuevas:  He has this larger than life personality — always singing, dancing, singing. To see him grow up the way he has, I can't think of anyone more deserving. He's still humble and he still has his love for the 915, as he says on "American Teen."

I was very excited, but it doesn’t feel all too real right now. Not long after seeing the nominations, I got a phone call from my mom congratulating me — that was very special. Kahlil Gibran

Kahlil Gibran

(1883-1931)

Who Was Kahlil Gibran?

Kahlil Gibran moved to the United States in 1895 and was exposed to Boston's artistic community. Initially showing promise as an artist, he also began writing newspaper columns and books in Arabic, drawing attention for his prose poems. After moving to New York City, Gibran began writing books in English, including his most famous work, The Prophet (1923). The popularity of The Prophet endured well after the author's death in 1931, making him the third-best-selling poet of all time.

Early Years

Gibran Khalil Gibran was born on January 6, 1883, to a Maronite Christian family in Bsharri, Lebanon. A quiet, sensitive young boy, he displayed an early artistic aptitude and a love for nature that became evident in later works. His early education was sporadic, although he received informal lessons from a local doctor.

Gibran's temperamental father worked as a tax collector, but he was charged with embezzlement and his property was seized. Seeking a better life, Gibran's mother in 1895 moved the family to Boston, Massachusetts, where they settled in the immigrant South End neighborhood.

Artistic Development

Receiving his first formal schooling, where he was registered under his now-commonly known name of Kahlil Gibran, the 13-year-old stood out with his artistic ability. He was steered to photographer and publisher Fred Holland Day, who nurtured Gibran's talents and introduced him to a wider artistic community.

At 15, Gibran returned to his home country to attend a Maronite school in Beirut, where he displayed an interest in poetry and founded a student magazine. He returned to Boston in 1901 shortly after the death of one of his sisters from tuberculosis; the following year, his brother and mother passed away as well.

Financially supported by his surviving sister, a seamstress, Gibran continued to work on his art. In 1904, he enjoyed an exhibition of his drawings at Day's studio, and he began writing a weekly column for the Arabic newspaper al-Mohajer. Gibran drew a following for his "prose poems," which were more accessible than traditional Arabic works and explored themes of loneliness and a loss of connection to nature. He published a pamphlet on his love for music in 1905, and followed with two collections of short stories.

Meanwhile, Gibran grew close to Mary Haskell, a progressive school headmistress who became the writer's benefactor and literary collaborator. She funded his enrollment at the Académie Julian in Paris, and then his move to New York City in 1911.

New York Years

Establishing himself in New York's artistic circles, Gibran in 1912 published the novella al-Ajniha al-mutakassira (Broken Wings). He had an exhibition of his paintings in late 1914, although by then his Symbolist-influenced style was becoming outdated in the art world.

Gibran began writing for the Arabic newspaper al-Funun , and with the outbreak of World War I he expressed more nationalistic leanings. He joined the board of another newspaper, Fatat Boston , and in 1920 he founded al-Rabitah al-Qalamiyah (The Pen Bond), a society of Arab writers.

With the help of Mary Haskell, Gibran began writing books in English, producing a collection of parables with The Madman (1918) and The Forerunner (1920). In 1919, he also published the poem al-Mawakib (The Procession) and a book of art, Twenty Drawings .

Books: 'The Prophet'

In 1923, Gibran published what became his most famous work, The Prophet . Centered on the character of Almustafa, a holy man set to return home after 12 years in exile, the book expounds on matters of love, sorrow and religion over 26 poetic essays. The limited reviews were mixed, but The Prophet quickly sold out its first edition and continued selling steadily, giving its author his first taste of widespread fame.

However, by this time Gibran was also battling alcoholism and becoming more of a recluse. One final completed book, The Earth Gods , hit shelves in early 1931, and he finished a manuscript of what became The Wanderer (1932) shortly before his death on April 10, 1931, from cirrhosis of the liver.

Legal Battle and Legacy

Gibran's body was interred in Bsharri at the Mar Sarkis monastery, which soon became a museum. However, legal problems rose due to the provision in his will that directed royalties from his book sales to his hometown. Unable to reach a consensus on how to distribute the money, the people of Bsharri engaged in a bitter dispute that stretched out for decades, before the Lebanese government stepped in to put the matter to rest.

Meanwhile, the popularity of The Prophet endured. It found a particular resurgence in the counterculture movement of 1960s America, at times reaching sales of 5,000 copies per week. Often dismissed by critics during his lifetime, Gibran eventually became the third-best-selling poet of all time, behind William Shakespeare and Chinese philosopher Lao-tzu.

Thanks in large part to the diaries kept by Mary Haskell, biographers have been able to uncover extensive details of the writer's life before he became famous. In 2008, Kahlil Gibran: The Collected Works was published, and in 2014, Kahlil Gibran's The Prophet enjoyed a positive reception upon hitting the big screen as an animated feature.

Popular Questions

Khalid basic information.

Khalid Donnel Robinson was raised by his mother, who had to move around a lot because of her military work. Before his mother was relocated to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, he had previously lived in Heidelberg, Germany, as well as on military bases in Kentucky, New York, and Fort Stewart, Georgia. Khalid had always been around music—he began singing before he could talk, and his mother sang with the U.S. Army Chorus—but the encouraging atmosphere at Americas High School in El Paso sparked his imagination and gave him more self-assurance.

Khalid uploaded his first recordings while at Americas. Tunji Balogun, an A&R executive, brought the artist to major-label RCA after they rapidly connected with him. With “Location,” Khalid made his debut in the music industry in August 2016, three months after receiving his high school diploma. A sparse love song with Syk Sense and Smash David on the production team, it reflected the singer’s preference for artists like James Blake and Frank Ocean.

As “Location” was astonishingly still climbing the charts, the anti-anthemic second single “Young Dumb & Broke” didn’t come out until the following February, setting up the March release of the album American Teen. The album, which includes both singles, debuted on the Billboard 200 at position nine. Two months later, the R&B / hip-hop chart’s number two position for “Location” and the Hot 100’s number 16 position for “Young Dumb & Broke” respectively reached their respective peaks.

Through 2018, a discography of featured parts grew to include remixes of Lorde ’s “Homemade Dynamite,” Calvin Harris’ “Rollin’,” Marshmello ’s “Silence,” and other tracks from 2017. Along with previous appearances, Khalid also made chart impacts on Shawn Mendes’ “Youth” and Benny Blanco’s Top Ten smash “Eastside.” The soundtracks of Love, Simon, 13 Reasons Why, and Superfly featured Khalid more prominently as a headliner or co-headliner; the Normani and Khalid duet “Love Lies” reached the Top Ten; and they both peaked with “Lovely” alongside Billie Eilish.

While all was going on, Khalid released the tracks “OTW” and “Better” from his upcoming second album. The latter was featured on Suncity, an EP released that October, and it peaked the R&B/hip-hop chart and reached the Top 20 in pop. Before the release of Free Spirit in April, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200, Khalid released “Saturday Nights” and “Talk” in the early part of the following year. The singer received his sixth Grammy nomination, for Record of the Year, for “Talk,” a number three pop song. In July 2021, the lead single from his upcoming third album, Everything Is Changing, called “New Normal,” was released.

In December of that year, Khalid offered up Scenic Drive (The Tape), his first mixtape, which featured contributions from Alicia Keys, Ari Lennox, and Majid Jordan, among others. Khalid has received multiple accolades including six Grammy Award nominations, six Billboard Music Awards, three American Music Awards and a MTV Video Music Award. In 2019, Khalid was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

Khalid Biography, Yours Truly, Artists, April 18, 2024

As of August 2022, Khalid’s estimated net worth is $10 Million. A huge part of Khalid’s earnings comes primarily from his album sales and touring. He also makes some good money off merchandise sales. Music streams are yet another stream of income for the singer. Over the years, he has amassed millions of listeners on Spotify and other streaming platforms. Though money from music streaming comes in trickles, it becomes quite the downpour with a much larger fan base, which is the case with Khalid who has surpassed over 20 billion cumulative streams.

He might bear a name with Arabic origins, but nothing certain is exactly known or available about the singer’s religion. It is possible that many would be under the impression that he is from a Muslim background, but so far, Khalid has seemed to keep that side of his personal life out of the public eye and under wraps, largely focusing on his music career.

As is the case with most big international acts, Khalid has got a bunch of merchandise of various designs that have been on sale over the course of his flourishing career, and the fans are and have been copping and lapping them up like thirsty fashion deers to the point that some of the merch he has have been sold out, completely out of stock. The singer’s merch range from colorful and carefully-designed hoodies, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and even hats. His merch can be purchased from online stores and a select few retail outlets.

Asma is so good! Hope she does more exemplary reporting!

Since Asmi’s family left Pakistan, I am curious to know whether they are Sunni or Shi’ite.

America is the most prejudiced and judgemental country in the face of this earth, mostly due to the ignorance of our people. I truly believe that if anyone has the credentials, knowledge, and drive, he/she is entitled to all opportunities! Religion or ethnicity should have no place here.

Asma Khalid in the fewest words possible? “The Gold Standard”

Asma has the highest integrity, honest morals and is truthful.

It is a proud moment to be a Muslim and a Pakistani American. Asma Khalid is another example that one can wear a scarf or Hijab and be successful. I have many nieces who wear the Hejab and are successfull physicians and engineers.

As-salaamu-alaiki…Alhamdulillah for not compromising in believing in our religion of Islam. May Allah bless you in your efforts of serving “all mankind for the good, and the better.”

She is a Kenyan commercial model, digital influencer, and an award-winning actress. You probably know her as Trisha Khalid, but her real name is Fosi Mplole Hamis.

From being raised by a single mother to a successful career in the entertainment industry, this is her journey as told by WoK :

Trisha was born on 31 December 1994 in the coastal region of Mombasa as the youngest of six siblings. Sadly, her father died while she was still young, so she was raised by her mother.

From a young age, she showed a keen interest in the world of fashion and entertainment, particularly modelling and acting.

For her education, she attended the Star of the Sea Primary School and later the Star of the Sea Secondary School situated near Mombasa Town, in the Kisauni Constituency of Mombasa County.

In college, she studied to work as a cabin crew. But fate had other plans for her.

With her captivating presence and striking looks, Trisha, despite describing herself as an introvert, found herself naturally drawn into the world of modeling.

Submit your story

This saw her gracing the runways of various fashion events, featuring in high-profile ad campaigns and mingling with renowned fashion designers.

Prior to her fame, she used to do funny skits on Tik Tok. She went viral over a Tafuta mtu akushike TikTok skit when she sent her followers into a frenzy with her trademark ‘nyash’.

However, contrary to popular belief, including being accused of undergoing plastic surgery, Trisha insists that her curves and derriere are natural, attributing them to family genetics.

However, she supplements her curves by working out.

Acting career

Trisha gained fame after her starring role in the Maisha Magic East telenovela Kovu, where she played the role of actress Ruby.

Unlike many actors who face struggles at the beginning of their careers, Trisha’s journey was remarkably smooth.

In a revealing interview with Nation in 2021, she disclosed that it was none other than Citizen TV’s Lulu Hassan who approached her with an invitation to play Ruby in “Kovu.”

She was however hesitant and initially turned it down, but Lulu encouraged her.

She later admitted that accepting the role was the best decision of her life. It led to her nomination as the best lead actress in the 2020 Kalasha Awards.

She is currently playing the role of Trisha in the telenovela show Becky on Citizen TV.

Trisha’s personal life has garnered significant attention from the media.

In 2022, she made headlines when blogger Edgar Obare exposed her alleged relationship with a prominent Mombasa government employee.

Rumors suggested that the employee had a family, making Trisha the ‘side chick.’ At another point, there were whispers of a romantic connection between her and former Mombasa governor Hassan Joho.

However, in later interviews, the voluptuous actress encouraged younger girls to shun dating older men for financial gain, saying it is best if they worked hard for themselves.

Besides her acting career, Trisha has proven herself as a successful entrepreneur. Online sources estimate her net worth to be around $ 300,000.

In Bamburi, she owns a salon called Tees Beauty Salon. She is also the proud owner of Trendy Collection, an online boutique.

Aside from that, she is a highly sought-after video vixen and a brand influencer.

As a socialite-cum actor, she is one of the most followed Tiktokers in Kenya, boasting over 2.2 million followers. On Instagram, she boasts over 670,000 followers.

Generally, most of her income comes from her acting career, salon business, brand endorsements, fan gifts, and endorsement fees.
