6th Korea-India Friendship essay competition concludes

NEW DELHI, OCTOBER 12:  Thousands of students across India participated in the sixth edition of Korea-India Friendship essay competition organized by the Korean Cultural Centre in India.

The essay contest witnessed participation from 28,217 students from 560 schools PAN India. The winners were awarded trophies, certificates and cash prizes by H.E. Ambassador Shin Bongkil, Republic of Korea. The top three winners also received 6 Days and 5 Nights trip to Korea and other 41 winners were awarded the total cash prize of Rs. 1,19,000/- and trophies.

The essay competition is aimed at spreading knowledge and interest about South Korea among Indian youth, and expose students towards the culture, history and tourist attractions of Republic of Korea. Over the years, there has been a constant rise in the number of students participating in this competition.

Ambassador Shin Bongkil while addressing the gathering said that it was amazing to see such huge participation in the competition. The topic of the contest was not only interesting but difficult as well. India is a big country when compared to Korea, but both the nations have a lot similarities and wide scope to learn from each other. Kim Kum-pyoung, Director, Korean Cultural Centre India said, “Students have put immense efforts and gave tough competition. The increasing number in participation and depth of research on the subject was clearly visible in their essays.”

Structure of Competition

The competition was divided into senior and junior group. The topic for junior group was “Why South Korea is my Favorite Country?” in which 19,316 students from class 7 to 9 participated. Senior Group consisted of classes 10 to 12 students and its topic was “Why I want to become an Indian Ambassador to South Korea?” in which 8,887 Students participated. The first position in senior group was grabbed by Aakritie Raj (DAV public school, Faridabad, Haryana), the 2nd position was bagged by Sukhmani Kaur Riar (Army Public School, Ahmadabad Cant, Gujarat) and Yanshi Vaish (Puranchandra Vidyaniketan, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh) and 3rd position went to Muskaan Kapur (DAV Public School, Faridabad, Haryana) and Pratishtha Gupta (DAV Public School, Faridabad, Haryana).

Apeejay School Mahavir Marg has been declared the winner at the 7 th  Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition 2022 by the Korean Culture Centre India, Embassy of the Republic of Korea. The award comes as a recognition of the enthusiasm of several students from the school who participated in the competition.

The competition was held at multiple levels, starting from the school level to state, national and international levels. The online MCQ quiz was themed on Korean culture .   

Among these participants was Anandita Anand, from class 10, who was introduced to Korean culture about two years ago. “I got to know about the Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition from my class teacher. We were given some documents to know more about Korea, which helped me gain a lot of knowledge. I have been participating in various competitions related to it. I topped the quiz competition from school.” 

Anandita likes K-pop music and is also learning the Korean language. “I can speak a little bit of Korean, but I look forward to being able to speak it fluently.”

The students from Apeejay Mahavir Marg participated in the quiz competition individually. Meanwhile, the school has been conducting an India-Korea cultural exchange programme for some years now. Class 12 student Misha Puri says the first programme took place when she was in class 7. “Prior to the pandemic, the students from our school and those from Korea would meet each other in person by travelling to one another’s countries. Since the pandemic, we have been meeting online,” she says.

In the cultural exchange meetings, helmed by Apeejay, the students interact with their counterparts in Korean schools. “In the meetings, we exchange insights into our respective cultures and discuss the similarities between them. I recently showed them my kathak performance; another student shared her bhangra dance video. As I interacted with students from Korea, my interest in their culture grew, and eventually in K-pop. I am in awe of the respect Koreans show (they bow) every time they greet someone. I even started following their fashion. Recently, I started following popular Korean boy band BTS.

“So far, we have interacted with about four-five Korean schools,” Misha, who reached up to the national level of the competition, adds. Talking about Apeejay’s role, she says, “The school has been very supportive. Our teacher Pooja ma’am, who is involved in the programme, always motivates us to showcase our culture and heritage as much as possible and also learn from Koreans in the process.”

Paramveer Singh, class 12, who also participated in the quiz competition was intrigued by Korean food and architecture, which motivated him to enroll in the quiz. “As far as the cultural exchange meetings are concerned, we usually have two sessions with each Korean school. I am grateful to our school for giving us this form of exposure.”

The accolade won by Apeejay Mahavir Marg comes as a significant milestone in its strong cultural partnership with Korean schools, fostering greater involvement of students.

Registrations open for 7th Korea-India friendship quiz competition

Registrations open for 7th Korea-India friendship quiz competition: Korean Cultural Centre India opens registration for “7 th Korea-India Friendship Quiz Contest”. Schools from Pan India can participate in one of the biggest school level quiz contest. This event aims to spread awareness about Korea and its diverse facets among school students, leading to greater understanding of the nation, its people and its interaction with India over the years. To participate students need to register at www.koreaindiaquiz2022.com

The contest will focus on all kinds of knowledge related to Korea’s society & culture, traditions, history, art, architecture, nature, wildlife, geography, tourism & travel destinations, cuisines, heritage, language, sports, science technological innovations, diplomacy and more.

The event will be divided into three parts. First online round which will be held till 15 th April after registering through the web link, students can take the quiz according to their own convenient time, at the end student will receive an electronic participation certificate. In 2 nd round, Pan India will be divided into 5 Zones- North, South, West, East and central zones, the contest will be held from 27 th April to 29 th April on their respective dates decided for each zone separately.

The winners of each zone selected through the second round will have their final face-to-face competition on 12 th May (Thursday) grand finale at the Delhi event venue. In the final competition, where representatives of the huge Indian continent, each zone will attend, Korean Cultural Centre plans to prepare various events such as K-pop and Taekwondo demonstration performances, Korean food & Hanbok (Korean traditional dress), and virtual reality experiences and proceed as a Korean culture festival.

Mr. Hwang Il-yong, director of Korean Cultural Centre India said, “Despite the difficult situation of the pandemic, Korean Cultural Centre India has continuously maintained youth cultural exchange projects & programs for Indian students in various forms and will continue to do so in the future. We hope that Indian students will be able to learn more about Korea and Korean culture through real experience as well as knowledge which will be provided through this event.”

Exciting prizes are waiting for the winners. First winner will be awarded a cash prize of INR 2,00,000, runner-up will be awarded INR 1,50,000, 2 nd runner-up (3rd rank) will be awarded INR 1,00,000. 5th Korea-India Friendship Essay Competition Announced

Korean culture centre india, embassy of republic of korea is organising an essay writing competition for junior and senior school going students of class 7 to 12. the purpose of the essay writing competition is to develop friendly bond between south korea and india..

To develop friendly bond between South Korea and India, Korean Culture Centre India, Embassy of Republic of Korea has organized essay writing competition for juniors and seniors for school going students from class 7- 12.

Theme for junior category is ‘What I like about South Korea’ in 150- 300 words and for senior category is ‘Why I want to visit South Korea’ in 300- 500 words. The writings are to be submitted in English language only.

Application submission closes on August 08, 2017 on or before 12:00 midnight. To check the eligibility and application procedures follow the proceedings:

Eligibility:

Students studying in class 7 to 9 can participate under junior’s category and students of class 10- 12 can participate under senior’s category.

Third position holders under senior category will be awarded with cash prize of up to INR 5000. Winners will get free trip to South Korea for six- days and five- nights. Travel will be incurred by the organizers to top 3 winners outside Delhi/ NCR for participation in award ceremony in Delhi. Maximum air fare of INR 10,000 will be given on presenting the actual ticket and maximum train fare of INR 5000 on presenting the actual ticket.

Winners under junior category will be awarded with cash prize of up to INR 20,000.

The essay competition is an initiative to develop healthy and harmonious bond between the two countries and help Indian students get to know about South Korean life and culture.

With the stellar rise of South Korea as a highly developed mixed economy destined to play a major role in global economy in coming decades, the blooming friendship of India and South Korea is gradually percolating to peoples.

If the 2012 song gangnam style by park jae-sang, popularly known as psy ts films, was a groundbreaking cultural exposure of korean pop for the world, it is being followed up more in india with consistent rise in popularity of not only korean pop but the whole range of entertainment from films to drama and comics. the cultural stimulation and influence is also spreading to food and travel..

With the presence of more than 700 Korean companies in India including hugely popular brands such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai, the demand for Korean language courses is increasing day by day in India. JNU, Delhi University and Jamia Milia Islamia had already started Korean language courses and programmes. With the new National Education Policy announced in 2020 by India, Korean became one of the Indian government’s recommended foreign languages. This has led to many schools introducing Korean in their schools.

Curriculum Magazine’s Autar Nehru in an email interview with Hwang Il-yong, Director of Korean Cultural Centre India got a sense of this new trend in schools

Korean Cultural Centre in India (KCCI) is doing a remarkable service in bringing the people especially youth of Korea and India closer. Can you please briefly enlist some of these youth oriented programs from KCCI for awareness of our readers?

Currently, “K-Pop Contest 2021”, “6th Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition 2021” and “INDOREA Essay Writing Competition” are going on as our main events for the youth. K-Pop is Korean pop music, through BTS`s global sensation, I believe you to be aware of what K-Pop is. In vocal and dance categories, all Indian youth can participate to this contest. Just sending us your singing or dancing video with Korean pop music can lead you into the big community in India. And Quiz one is for school students and Essay one is for college students. Understanding and learning each other as friend is natural interest and process. In this perspective, we are holding online quiz and essay writing about Korea (history, culture, language, current affairs, etc.) as a format.

And apart from these special events, we have operated Korean language, Taekwondo (Martial arts), Korean culture experience programs since our beginning as our regular programs.

Apart from this, the decision to start Korean language classes in schools in India is a milestone in this exchange of our cultures; can you give a sense of footprint and timeline of this welcome initiative?

Korean in schools was started with one school in year 2015 as demo hobby class. In year 2019 it was formally introduced as hobby class programme in 14 Schools, which was further creased by another 13 schools in year 2020.

Year 2020 can be considered as a major milestone, as Korean was introduced as a ‘Curriculum based’ language programme in 6th grade in three schools and this year, it has gone upto to 12 schools in Year 2021, along with 20 more schools starting hobby class programme.

Foreign languages in India are traditionally tied to employability and as a gateway to countries of these languages. In that context, how useful is Korean to Indian students?

Approximately 700 Korean companies and offices are already working in India. Demand of Korean language professionals is showing an increasing trend which is expected to go up further with the increasing bilateral trade between Korea and India.  Also, the inclination to do higher studies in Korea is also increasing among the Indian      students due to top-notch and future promising education system of Korea. The numbers of Scholarships is also increased if we compare to scholarship situation 3 years back. With English’s rising popularity in Korea, students don’t face language barriers as such and with time we’ll see more and more students from India in Korea.

Is there any support or incentives that your centre offers to schools in starting  Korean language classes/labs etc?

Yes, Since year 2015 with the start of First demo hobby class, all the hobby class and the curriculum based Korean language classes are fully funded by KCCI including all expenses of the teacher’s and the textbooks.

Apart from regular school classes, what are the other ways of studying Korean in India?

Other ways of learning Korean in India can be categorized into full time study programs like Graduate, Masters Programme in universities. Institutes like King Sejong Institute which is having presence in six locations in India, is also playing a major role in imparting Korean language proficiency and skills.

There is a lot what we call exotic to Korea and remains unexplored for a lot of people, do you see interest of Indians in Korea and vice-versa cementing relationship of the two countries as friends forever?

Actually, the friendship relation between India and Korea has been continued for a long time, about 2,000 years, starting with ancient Korean king and Indian princess`s love story. Both governments have recognized this well also, so the cooperation in every fields and aspects have been initiated and developed these days not only in economy sphere, national security, diplomacy, science & technology, but in medical welfare, city development & administration, culture, education, etc. as well.

And we expect the relation continually grow as overall these friendship streams are much appreciated and accepted by both sides well.

Finally, what do you like most about India and how do you see the next generation of people of the two countries partnering in taking this relationship to a new high?

Many people have shared the perspective that Korea and India blood shared friend based on the story of king and queen which I shared at the above question. I also personally feel India and Indian are close friends to me. We share many similarities in many fields, society and human character, ethnics, culture, etc. I like all, Indian food, movie, culture, cities, beautiful nature, and so on.

For our next generation, I believe understanding and learning each other as friend is important. That`s our main strategy and vision also, “introducing Korea as friend to Indian youth”. I was asked by someone recently why focusing on history of two countries` relation and why are you working hard for all events even in this pandemic situation, my answer is this, Remembering India’s help and support as a friend, when we were in difficult times, is very important for us. We feel obligated to teach this to both countries’ young generations. History should be maintained, taught and properly promoted continuously for the next generation. We hope that more people get interested and study more about this point — the historical relation between Korea and India. When it is a difficult time, we should try and struggle more not to lose heart, hope and the challenging spirit. Life should go on.

6th Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition 2021 thrown open for Indian students

NEW DELHI: Korean Cultural Center India (KCCI) has announced registration open for the online ‘6 th Korea–India Friendship Quiz Competition’. The purpose of the competition is to introduce the culture, traditions, cuisine, and general knowledge about the Republic of Korea to Indian students and help strengthen the Korea – India friendship. The top 4 winners will win a victory trip to Korea.

Students from class 07 th to 12 th are invited to participate from across India. The registration is open from 1st April to 30th May 2021. Students can apply through www.koreaindiaquiz2021.com

Seeing the growing interest of youth in Korean content, this year the contest will be held in 6 regions from 25 cities in 3 levels: Level 1: Individual-level online tests on quiz website, Level 2: City level quizzes on videoconference, and Level 3: National level quizzes on video conference.

In Level 1 each student will get two attempts at the test, which will be timed for each player. In each school, the student with the highest score in the shortest time will be declared the winner and will qualify for Level 2 – the city quiz round, which will be conducted from 12 June to 23 July 2021.

The winners of Level 2 will compete in the National semi finale round(s) on 26 th and 27 th July. The then winners of semi finale(s) will participate in the national grand finale on 30 th July 2021. The top 4 winners will get a free trip to South Korea.

The 6 regions include North: Jammu, Chandigarh, Dehradun-Mussoorie, and Delhi-NCR, West: Mumbai-Pune, Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar, Jaipur, South: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kochi-Ernakulam, Central: Nagpur, Indore-Bhopal, Raipur, East: Kolkata, Bhubaneswar, Patna and in Northeast: Guwahati, Shillong, and Darjeeling.

Hwang Il-yong, director of Korean Cultural Centre India says, “Korea and India have been friend each other for a long time, I believe we have been connected each other throughout our long-history cultural exchanges. I hope through this event, Indian students learn Korea as their real friend country.”

The annual quiz competition inaugurated in 2016 had around 12,505 student’s participation in the first year. The participation number increased every year and till now a total 1,31,740 number of students have participated in this contest.

Winners of 7th Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition 2022 declared

Aarushi mohta, aashita bakshi and leishi narumbam respectively bag the top three positions.

The ‘7 th  Korea-India Friendship Quiz Competition 2022’ organized by Korean Cultural Centre India (KCCI) of this season came to its collusion with announcement of the winners. Aarushi Mohta from Zydus school of excellence, Gujarat took the National Championship title and was awarded with prize INR 2,00,000. The first runner-up Aashita Bakshi from Delhi Public School, West Bengal received INR 1,50,000 and the second runner-up. Leishi Narumbam from S.I school, Manipur received INR 1,00,000.

The competition started off on 1 st  March 2022 and concluded on 12 th  May 2022 at Korean Cultural Centre India, New Delhi. After individual rapid fire quiz and group speed rounds, it concluded with Taekwondo demonstration and a K-pop performance by a girl group who won the 2021 K-pop contest India Delhi round.

This year 6,810 schools participated in the contest from across India, which is a huge leap from 2,608 school participation last year in 2021. After three months and two highly competitive rounds, 07 students from all over India competed in the finale for the title of National Champions in Delhi. The flight tickets and accommodations of all 07 finalists and their individual guardians for the final round of the event were supported by KCCI.

This was followed by a Korean cultural experience tour which had all finalists and audience members get to experience the depths of the Korean culture with a demonstration of samulnori, a traditional percussion instrument, trying out Hanbok and Playing Korean traditional games. Korean Cultural Centre India had also organised the Korean cuisines reception with the buffet of all vegetarian Korean delicacies like Japchae, Kimbap, and Tteokbeokki, to name few, for everyone to relish.

The budding writers of the school bagged laurels at the prestigious Korean Essay Competition, a National Level Competition where there were over 28,000 entries submitted from schools across India.

Aryan Mathur and Prithika Dasgupta of Class XII and Rhea Suri of Class XI won the Special award in senior category in which they got cash prize of Rs 2000 each. Vidushi Tankha of Class IX won the Special award in junior category and got cash prize of Rs 1000.

About the Competition

The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) was founded in 1950 with the primary objective to actively participate in the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes pertaining to India’s external cultural relations; to foster and strengthen cultural relations and mutual understanding between India and other countries; to promote cultural exchanges with other countries and people, and to develop relations with nations.

ICCR has been playing an equally important role in the field of education for International students in India. It offers a number of scholarships to foreign nationals to pursue higher studies in Indian Central/State Universities and other recognized Institutes of higher education and learning.

ICCR proposes to organize an “Essay Competition”.

Topics (participants will have to write upon only one from the following):-

1) Development of Democracy in India.

2) Contribution of spiritual leaders in development of India.

3) STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Education and its Future in INDIA.

Who can participate?

1) The competition is open to all international students studying in India at present below the age of 35.

2) Free for all eligible (as above).

1) Registration & Submission of Essay – 1 to 30 January 2023 (1800 hrs IST).

2) Declaration of result – 15 February 2023 (tentative).

2021-2022 Korea-America Academic Essay Competition and Conference

The Korea-America Association works to promote friendship and understanding between the Republic of Korea and the United States. In order to enhance relations and encourage cooperation, they are hosting the annual Korea-America Academic Essay Competition and Conference. All undergraduates from the United States and Korea are eligible to enter and may work in co-author teams of up to 4 members. The essay can be in English or Korean and must adhere to one of the following themes:

• Korea-U.S. diplomacy
• Korea-U.S. security
• Korea-U.S. economy

The deadline to submit is January 30, 2021, at 9:59 AM ET (this is 11:59 pm KST).

RESULTS- KOREA- INDIA FRIENDSHIP ESSAY COMPETITION

1st Latvia Ambassador 1day Students’ Competition 2019 is the first of its kind essay competition, open for all Indian students studying in any board in India from grade 7 to 12. Students are invited to participate in the competition and express their views about the topic related to Latvia, explore relevant websites to find relevant information about the theme/topic and execute the best essay.

The winners of essay competition will be invited for reception dinner at residence of ambassador/ at embassy and will be accommodated at embassy for a day to explore, understand and learn real diplomatic skills.

Essay Topic:    “ My first 3 tasks, I would like to perform as a Latvian Ambassador to strengthen Latvia- India relations”

Word Counts:  300-500 words

Eligibility:   Class 7 to 12 students

• 7 winners will be accommodated at embassy for a day and perform the real task as diplomats, learn basic skills and duties of diplomats and learn about embassy’s work.
• 7 winners will be invited for reception dinner at embassy in Delhi
• 7 winners will be felicitated with Latvian souvenir kit + Trophy + Book “Rapid Vedic Mathematics
