Lisa Marie Presley’s memoir to be posthumously published this autumn

Book co-written with the star’s daughter Riley Keough promises to reveal ‘the complexity of being a Presley’

The posthumous memoir of Lisa Marie Presley written in collaboration with her daughter Riley Keough will be published later this year.

The as yet untitled book about Lisa Marie’s life as the daughter of Elvis will be released by Pan Macmillan on 15 October. Lisa Marie, who died on 12 January last year, had asked Keough to help her finish her memoir, parts of which she had recorded on tape.

According to the publisher, the memoir is composed “mostly” of Lisa Marie’s words, with Keough “filling in the blanks” from her own memory. The book will discuss Lisa Marie’s relationship with Elvis and her mother Priscilla, as well as her marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage and the loss of her son, Keough’s brother Benjamin, who killed himself in 2020.

“Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter,” said Keough. “I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one.”

Lisa Marie died unexpectedly aged 54 because of a bowel obstruction, which was a complication of bariatric surgery she had several years ago.

Sara Cywinski, publishing director at Pan Macmillan, said she is “glad that there is an opportunity for the world to see Lisa Marie as Riley, and those closest to her, saw her. And, too, for the generations to come to understand the complexity of being a Presley.”

An audiobook of the memoir, read by Keough and including snippets of Lisa Marie’s voice, will be released simultaneously with the print edition.

Lisa Marie was the only child of Elvis and Priscilla, and she was raised in Graceland. She became a singer and released three albums, To Whom It May Concern, Now What, and Storm & Grace. Thirty-four-year-old Keough, the sole trustee of Graceland, is an actor; she starred in Daisy Jones & the Six and Zola among other productions.

“I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did,” added Keough.

Lisa Marie Presley‘s posthumous memoir will hit shelves later this year, thanks to her daughter Riley Keough.

Almost exactly one year after Presley’s unexpected death , Random House revealed Thursday that the singer was writing a memoir about her high-profile and complicated life as the sole child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. In a statement shared with The Times, Random House said that Presley asked her daughter to help finish the book before she died.

Presley died on Jan. 12, 2023 , at 54 after she suffered a cardiac episode at her Calabasas home. The L.A. County Medical Examiner determined in July that Presley died from complications of a small bowel obstruction, which was linked to previous bariatric surgery.

Singer Lisa Marie Presley, the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, has died at age 54. She was hospitalized Thursday after suffering a cardiac episode.

Keough, star of “Daisy Jones & the Six” and “Mad Max: Fury Road,” initially held off on collaborating on the book but picked up where her mother left off after Presley died.

“Riley carried a guilt that the world would never know the loving, joyful, and caring woman that she knew and grieved,” the statement said.

To complete the memoir, Keough listened to hours of Presley’s recordings, which touched on her father’s love, her complex mother-daughter relationship with Priscilla , her highly publicized romantic relationships and the 2020 death of her son Benjamin Keough.

Described as the “most intimate look at the Presley family to date,” the currently untitled memoir is set to publish on Oct. 15.

In recent years, the Presley family has been at the center of numerous entertainment projects, including Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” in 2022 and Sofia Coppola ’s “ Priscilla ” last year. Before the latter made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2023, Priscilla spoke about one of the final moments she shared with her daughter.

The “Dallas” and “The Naked Gun” star told the Hollywood Reporter in August that she knew “there was something not right” with her daughter’s health and that Lisa Marie complained about pain in her stomach after they shared laughs during a Hollywood party.

“I still can’t believe it. I don’t wish this on any mother,” the Presley matriarch added.

After Lisa Marie’s sudden death, Priscilla and Keough engaged in a tense legal battle over her estate. Priscilla and her granddaughter reached a settlement in May , making Keough the sole trustee of Lisa Marie’s estate and, by extension, part of Elvis’ estate .

“Riley and I are on good terms,” Priscilla said. “We were never not on good terms. That was all publicity.”

Lisa Marie Presley posthumous memoir announced, book completed by daughter Riley Keough

NEW YORK — A memoir that Lisa Marie Presley had been working on at the time of her death will be published this fall. The book, currently untitled, was completed with the help of actor Riley Keough , the eldest of Presley’s four children.

“Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter,” Keough said in a statement released Thursday by publisher Random House. “I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one. I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did.”

Her book is scheduled for release on Oct. 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley and a recording artist in her own right, died almost exactly a year ago at age 54. A coroner’s investigation found that the singer-actor died of complications from bariatric surgery years earlier. Lisa Marie is now buried on the grounds of the Graceland family estate in Memphis, Tennessee, where she had been the day her father died in 1977.

According to Random House, Lisa Marie had wanted her daughter to assist on her memoir, but Keough had “pushed off the project, feeling that there would be a right time for them to sit down together and finish it.” After Presley’s death, Keough spent hours listening to tapes her mother had made in preparation for her life story.

“Riley knew that it was time for Lisa Marie’s voice to be heard,” Random House’s announcement reads in part.

“She listened as Lisa Marie told story after story about the unconditional love she felt from her father, about being upstairs at Graceland, just the two of them, a sanctuary from the chaos of her life. About Lisa Marie’s complicated relationship with her mother Priscilla. About growing up with the clicking cameras perpetually at the door. About her own wild love stories, and her marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage. About motherhood and the shattering loss of her son, Riley’s brother Benjamin Keough, to suicide.”

Random House is calling the book a “raw, riveting, one-of-a-kind memoir,” told mostly through Lisa Marie Presley, “with Riley filling in the blanks from her own memory and those closest to her mother.”

An audio edition will be read by Keough, along with some excerpts from Lisa Marie’s taped recollections.

Riley Keough to finish Lisa Marie Presley’s memoir after putting off mother’s request when she was alive

The still-untitled memoir hits shelves on Oct. 15, 2024.

Almost a year to the day of Lisa Marie Presley ’s death, her daughter Riley Keough has announced plans to publish her posthumous memoir.

“I’m honored to help put my mother’s book out for her,” Keough wrote in a Thursday Instagram post, sharing a childhood photo of herself and Presley. EW has learned that the book will hit shelves on Oct. 15, 2024.

The upcoming autobiography has been long in the making. Prior to her death on Jan. 12 2023, Presley asked her daughter to help finish her long-gestating memoir. The project was put off to a later date until her unexpected death prompted Keough to revisit the “countless hours of tape” that her mother recorded, telling her life story. The final product will comprise mostly of her mother’s words, with Keough filling in the blanks from her own memory and those closest to her mother.

“Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter,” Keough said in the statement. “I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one.”

She adds, “I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did.”

The book will feature stories including Presley’s memories of Elvis, delve into her complicated relationship with her mother Priscilla, and explore aspects of her later life, including motherhood, the loss of her son, and marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage .

Presley was hospitalized following an apparent cardiac arrest on Jan. 12, 2023 and died hours later. An autopsy later determined her cause of death was due to be complications of a small bowel obstruction .

Per Random House, the book’s publisher, her memoir will “lift the veil on one of America’s most storied families, sharing intimate memories of Lisa Marie’s remarkable, tumultuous life while offering a poignant exploration of the bonds between a mother and daughter.”

Sanyu Dillon, president of the Random House Group, adds, “Lisa Marie led a truly singular life, and we know this book, brought to publication with the guidance of her daughter, will be a beautiful legacy not only for her children but for the generations of people who have loved her.”

The audiobook edition will be read by Keough and feature "never-before-heard recollections" in Lisa Marie’s own voice. The still-untitled book will hit shelves on Oct. 15.

Just 9 years old when her father died, Lisa Marie dropped out of high school and began abusing illegal drugs. Later, Presley turned to music for solace and released three albums, starting with To Whom It May Concern in 2003. She was married four times, including brief marriages with Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage , and had four children, including actor Riley Keough . Presley died in January 2023 from a bowel obstruction at age 54.

Born on February 1, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Elvis and Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie Presley grew up living in her father’s Graceland estate until the age of 4, when her parents separated. After, Presley moved with her mother to Los Angeles. Even though her parents were separated, she continued to see both, splitting time between Los Angeles and Memphis.

When she was 9, Presley’s father died of an apparent heart failure associated with prescription drug abuse. She became the sole heir to his estate but wouldn’t officially inherit it until she was in her 20s.

As a junior in high school, Presley dropped out of school and began abusing illegal drugs. At 17, Presley was sent to Scientology’s Celebrity Center rehab facility.

Presley was married four times in her life. Her husbands included Danny Keough , Michael Jackson , Nicolas Cage , and Michael Lockwood.

While in rehab, Presley met rock ’n’ roll musician Danny Keough. Presley and Keough married on October 3, 1988. The couple had two children, Danielle Riley and Benjamin, but Presley and Keough divorced in 1994 after six years of marriage.

Only 20 days after her divorce from Keough was finalized, Presley married Michael Jackson, who reportedly proposed over the phone after only four months of dating. Their relationship was short-lived, however, and Presley filed for divorce from Jackson in January 1996.

In 2000, she met Nicolas Cage while engaged to musician John Oszajca. She soon broke off the engagement to Oszajca to date Cage. The couple married shortly after in Hawaii on August 10, 2002, but divorced only 108 days later.

On January 22, 2006, Presley married for the fourth time, this time to Michael Lockwood, a guitarist, producer, and director. The couple welcomed twins, Harper and Finley, in October 2008. Although her longest marriage, Presley ultimately filed for divorce in 2016. It was finalized in 2021 after a lengthy custody battle.

Presley had four children: Danielle Riley and Benjamin with husband Danny Keough, and twins Harper and Finley with husband Michael Lockwood.

Danielle Riley Keough, better known by her stage name Riley Keough , was born in May 1989. A former model, Riley has transitioned into a successful acting career. She has appeared in movies and TV series, including Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), Logan Lucky (2017), The Girlfriend Experience , and 2023’s Daisy Jones & The Six .

Presley’s second child, Benjamin Keough, was born in October 1992. Like his parents, Benjamin pursued a music career but never released an album. In July 2020, 27-year-old Benjamin died by suicide. “My and my three daughters’ lives as we knew it were completely detonated and destroyed by his death,” Presley wrote in an essay about grief in August 2022.

Fraternal twins Harper and Finley Lockwood were born in October 2008. During Presley’s custody battle with Michael Lockwood, Harper, and Finley were placed in protective custody with grandmother Priscilla Presley .

While she was building her family, Presley was also forming a music career. In 1992, she recorded her first demo. She rejected the record contract she was offered afterward, however.

Presley released her first album, To Whom It May Concern , on April 8, 2003. The album debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and was certified gold in June 2003. Now What , Presley’s second album, was released on April 5, 2005, and debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200. The album was certified gold in November 2005.

In 2007, Presley recorded the single “In the Ghetto” as a posthumous duet with her father. The video released for the song reached No. 1 on iTunes and No. 16 on the Billboard singles chart, with all proceeds going to a Scientology charity. Her third album, Storm and Grace , was released in 2012.

In addition to her music career, Presley served as a co-trustee of the Elvis Presley Estate along with her mother, Priscilla, and the National Bank of Commerce. She remained connected to Scientology through her mother, the Apple School, and the Celebrity Center rehab facility.

Presley struggled with sobriety at different points in her life. During her divorce proceedings with Lockwood in 2017, Presley admitted in a deposition she abused opioids, cocaine, painkillers, and alcohol and attended rehab several times.

In a foreword for the 2019 book The United States of Opioids: A Prescription for Liberating a Nation in Pain , Presley revealed she became addicted to opioids after her doctor prescribed them following the birth of her daughters Harper and Finley. She said she was “grateful to be alive today” and credited her four children for motivating her to stay sober.

Although Presley kept her battle relatively private, Lockwood expressed concerns amid their divorce that she might relapse following her son Benjamin’s death in 2020.

Shockingly, Presley’s net worth was estimated to be negative-$10 million at the time of her death, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Upon Elvis’ death, she became the sole heir to his estate and officially inherited it on her 25 th birthday. However, in December 2004, she agreed to sell off 85 percent of Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. to businessman Robert F.X. Sillerman, the founder of SFX Entertainment, for around $100 million. She reportedly received $53 million in cash in the agreement and was absolved of $25 million in debts owed by the estate.

Eventually, her net worth plummeted. During a 2018 hearing in court amid her divorce with Lockwood, Presley claimed she was more than $16 million in debt—including income taxes, credit card bills, and a defaulted mortgage.

lisa marie presley posing for a photo at the golden globes red carpet

Presley’s last notable public appearance was at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards on January 10, 2023, to support actor Austin Butler, who played her father in the biopic Elvis . She appeared to have trouble walking down steps and speaking during an interview with Extra reporter Billy Bush, prompting concerns about her health.

Only two days later, Presley died on January 12, 2023, at age 54 in California. Early reports shared that she suffered cardiac arrest. An autopsy report later cited a small bowel obstruction caused her cardiac arrest. The obstruction was the result of scar tissue that developed after Presley’s bariatric surgery years prior.

She is buried at Graceland, where her memorial service was also held on January 22, 2023. More than 1,000 people gathered on the front lawn to mourn her, with The Smashing Pumpkins lead singer Barry Corgan, Alanis Morissette, and Axl Rose all performing during the service.

Shortly after Lisa Marie’s death in January 2023, her mother, Priscilla , submitted a filing to Los Angeles Superior Court challenging the validity of her daughter’s will—sparking a temporary rift among the Presley family.

A 2016 amendment to the will replaced Priscilla and her former business partner, Barry Siegel, as co-trustees of the Promenade Trust with Lisa Marie’s children Riley and Benjamin Keough. Priscilla claimed the amendment wasn’t properly witnessed or notarized, featured an atypical signature by Lisa Marie, and argued she didn’t receive the required notice of the change.

The trust included control of the Graceland property and a 15-percent stake in Elvis Presley Enterprises. According to The Los Angeles Times , Lisa Marie owned the Graceland mansion, costumes, cars, awards, and other possessions once belonging to her father, Elvis .

In May 2023, reports emerged that Priscilla and Riley Keough had reached a settlement agreement in the dispute. A judge approved the settlement in early August and finalized financial details that October. Ultimately, Keough was named Promenade’s sole trustee, as Presley became a “special advisor” to the trust for $100,000 annually. She also received a $1 million payout and will have a burial plot at Graceland .

Lisa Marie Presley 'Feels Lucky To Be Alive': Elvis' Daughter Will Tell All In Jaw-Dropping Memoir, Source Dishes

Feb. 4 2021, Updated 12:05 a.m. ET

Lisa Marie Presley is one of the most private stars in Hollywood. But after marking her 53rd birthday on February 1, she's letting her guard down — and opening up about her life in a jaw-dropping memoir, OK! has learned.

"Publishers have been clamoring to get her story for years," an insider tells OK! , adding that Lisa Marie will leave no stone unturned. "She's kept everything bottled up for so long, and now it's time to let it go."

SEALED WITH A KISS! LISA MARIE PRESLEY’S EX MAKES OUT WITH NEW GIRLFRIEND & TRIES HIDING AFTER BEING SPOTTED

One of the first things she plans to dish on is her late father Elvis Presley — and his shocking death in 1977. "Lisa Marie remembers her childhood as magical, warm and loving," shares the insider, adding that she was "broken" when her dad passed. "She didn't see the dark side of Elvis — everything that went on behind the glitz and glamour. All she knew was her dad loved her and she loved him."

Lisa Marie will also open up about her love life, including her high-profile failed marriages to Michael Jackson and Nicolas Cage , says the source. "She'll talk about how Michael promised her everything — he wanted to give her a fairy-tale life. But their union wasn't perfect. They even had separate bedrooms," spills the insider, adding that her romance with Nicolas wasn't ideal either.

After everything she's been through, "Lisa Marie feels lucky to be alive," says the insider.

"It was exciting but turbulent," the insider continues. "They fought a lot. She was almost relieved when Nicolas filed for divorce." And while her book will get emotional at times — she'll touch on deep topics like sobriety and the recent suicide of son Benjamin , 27, says the insider — the hope is that Lisa Marie's story will help others.

Lisa Marie Presley's memoir will be released posthumously by Random House and is set to hit shelves on Oct. 15

Riley Keough is opening up about what it means to finish her late mother Lisa Marie Presley ’s memoir.

Several days after it was announced that the actress, 34, was helping to release her mother and the daughter of Elvis and Priscilla Presley ’s memoir posthumously , she spoke to Variety about how “honored” she is to be a part of the process.

In a red carpet interview at Monday’s 2023 Emmy Awards , the Daisy Jones and the Six star shared that Lisa Marie had been working on the book for several years before she died at age 54 in January 2023 , and said that she felt compelled to complete it.

“She had been working on it for I want to say three or four years and it’s just something I felt that I needed to do for her and help her complete that project,” Keough told the outlet ahead of the Emmys, which she attended with her grandmother Priscilla , 78.

She added, “It’s very bittersweet and I am happy to do that for her. I feel honored to be able to help.”

The Zola star explained that she’s felt a mix of emotions revisiting the draft that her mother had long been working on. “It’s extremely emotional and also very therapeutic,” the Golden Globe-nominated actress revealed. “It makes me feel very close to her. So it’s kind of, again, bittersweet and difficult, but also really special.”

Lisa Marie’s memoir was first announced last Thursday, ahead of the one-year anniversary of her death. A press release revealed that the book, which is currently untitled, will be published by Random House and is due to hit shelves on Oct. 15.

The performer is said to act as a collaborator on the project, which the singer had previously asked for her help with. Following her death, the Under the Silver Lake star began listening to all of the tapes her mother had recorded in an effort to tell her story.

“Few people had the opportunity to know who my mom really was, other than being Elvis’s daughter,” the actress/filmmaker said in a statement. “I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one.”

The Emmy-nominated talent continued, “I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did.”

In the memoir, the late singer-songwriter is said to reflect upon her childhood spent at Graceland, her relationship with her parents, her marriages to stars Nicolas Cage and Michael Jackson and the loss of her son , Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020, among other stories.

Keough opened up about finishing her mother’s memoir shortly after she reflected on the recent anniversary of her death .

On Friday, she paid tribute to Lisa Marie by sharing a sweet, throwback photo of the two together on Instagram . In the shot, an elementary-aged Keough smiled while sitting next to her mom, and she left a simple “❤️” in the caption.

Lisa Marie Presley started writing a book before she died. Riley Keough completed it

LOS ANGELES – Lisa Marie Presley‘s posthumous memoir will hit shelves later this year, thanks to her daughter Riley Keough.

Almost exactly one year after Presley’s unexpected death, Random House revealed Thursday that the singer was writing a memoir about her high-profile and complicated life as the sole child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. In a statement shared with The Times, Random House said that Presley asked her daughter to help finish the book before she died.

Presley died on Jan. 12, 2023, at 54 after she suffered a cardiac episode at her Calabasas home. The L.A. County Medical Examiner determined in July that Presley died from complications of a small bowel obstruction, which was linked to previous bariatric surgery.

To complete the memoir, Keough listened to hours of Presley’s recordings, which touched on her father’s love, her complex mother-daughter relationship with Priscilla Presley, her highly publicized romantic relationships and the 2020 death of her son Benjamin Keough.

Described as the “most intimate look at the Presley family to date,” the currently untitled memoir is set to publish on Oct. 15.

“I was lucky to have had that opportunity and working on preparing her autobiography for publication has been a privilege, albeit a bittersweet one,” Keough said in Thursday’s announcement. “I’m so excited to share my mom now, at her most vulnerable and most honest, and in doing so, I do hope that readers come to love my mom as much as I did.”

In recent years, the Presley family has been at the center of numerous entertainment projects, including Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” in 2022 and Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla” last year. Before the latter made its debut at the Venice Film Festival in 2023, Priscilla Presley spoke about one of the final moments she shared with her daughter.

The “Dallas” and “The Naked Gun” star told the Hollywood Reporter in August that she knew “there was something not right” with her daughter’s health and that Lisa Marie Presley complained about pain in her stomach after they shared laughs during a Hollywood party.

“I still can’t believe it. I don’t wish this on any mother,” the Presley matriarch added.

After Lisa Marie Presley’s sudden death, Priscilla Presley and Keough engaged in a tense legal battle over her estate. Priscilla Presley and her granddaughter reached a settlement in May, making Keough the sole trustee of Lisa Marie Presley’s estate and, by extension, part of Elvis’ estate.

“Riley and I are on good terms,” Priscilla Presley said. “We were never not on good terms. That was all publicity.”
