Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's free movie streaming service includes tons of well-known films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for a Variety of Movies: Popcornflix

Jump right into watching free movies on your TV, phone, or computer without even setting up an account.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from comedies and dramas to horror and action films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV you can to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie sites on the internet. This list was last updated in March to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

Most of these sites have a mobile app for watching their movies. Take a look at our list of the best free apps for streaming movies so you can take the films with you wherever you go.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now at Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending Now — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Paddington 2, Hot Tub Time Machine, Penelope, Special Forces, Dheepan, Girl Next , and A Little Help.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Many aren't in HD.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free movies.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies . And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles that were uploaded by someone random. I'm talking full-length, totally legal movies, uploaded and managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch A Walk to Remember and Bram Stoker's Van Helsing ; both movies included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Longest Yard, Transcendence, Knowing, The Last Song, Hugo , and Donnie Darko .

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't have an idea about what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Most Watched Movies , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Big Time Movie Stars . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that not only does it let you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Some examples of 2024 titles include Calber Island, Much Ado, Ember in the Woods, and Everything is Both .

One great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you found it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can also pay for movies here ( some are even still in theaters ).

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added list, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

Here are some of the most popular movies you can watch at Freevee: The Homesman, Tidal Wave: No Escape, F9: The Fast Saga, Serenity , and Overcomer .

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but there are also some with full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Examples include The Black Collective: Black Cinema, 00s Replay, Godzilla, Award Winners, Directed by Women , and Comfort Movies .

These are some of the most watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Norbit , Mean Girls, Conic the Hedgehog, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Harlem Nights, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Top Gun , and She's the Man.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Popcornflix

Includes subtitles.

Has a one-page list of every movie available.

'Continue watching' section.

Can't sort by date or popularity.

Strange site navigation.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for examples, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals, and list some titles by a common theme. I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Movies are DVD quality.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming player. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is really high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Film Noir, Environment, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists, and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too, including Women Making History, Til Death Do Us Part, Cheap Thrills, Midnight Movies, and Best of the West.

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists these titles and more: To Kill a Mockingbird, Joy Ride, Collide, The Whole Truth, Men, Spree, and Scary Movie 4.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen here that are rare to find on a movie site: Festive Films, Undiscovered Gems, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , Short Movies, and Independent Cinema .

Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most watched movies are Machete Language, The Trolls, Afterlife, Words, and Play Hooky.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

Supports 'resume watching.'

Clearly shows which titles are leaving soon.

Genre lists can't be sorted.

Few unique genres.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users, but if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Blitz, Far Cry, Pursued, It Came From the Desert, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

Free Movies Online: 100 Fresh Movies to Watch Online For Free

This month's new additions include ghostbusters (1984), ghostbusters (2016), friday , the invisible man (2020), saving private ryan , and more..

TAGGED AS: Crackle , Freevee , movies , streaming , Tubi , Vudu , YouTube

Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

Which movies should you watch, though, now that you know where to find them? Rotten Tomatoes did some digging and sorted through the free movie catalogs of Peacock, Vudu, Tubi, Freevee, YouTube, and Crackle to find the 100 best movies available to watch for free right now. These films, all Fresh on the Tomatometer, include Oscar winners, blockbusters, comedy classics, informative documentaries, and family favorites — all available to watch for free.

Check out our list of the Freshest movies to watch free online to find something new without paying rental or subscription fees.

The Virgin Suicides

' sborder=

Awakenings (1990)

Critics Consensus: Elevated by some of Robin Williams’ finest non-comedic work and a strong performance from Robert De Niro, Awakenings skirts the edges of melodrama, then soars above it.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV

' sborder=

Back to School (1986)

Critics Consensus: Back to School gives Rodney Dangerfield plenty of room to riff — and supports the freewheeling funnyman with enough of a story to keep things interesting between punchlines.

' sborder=

Bound (1996)

Critics Consensus: Bound ‘s more titillating elements attracted attention, but it’s the stylish direction, solid performances, and entertaining neo-noir caper plot that make it worth a watch.

' sborder=

Chicago (2002)

Critics Consensus: A rousing and energetic adaptation of the Broadway musical, Chicago succeeds on the level of pure spectacle, but provides a surprising level of depth and humor as well.

' sborder=

Dick (1999)

Critics Consensus:  A clever, funny slice of alternate history, Dick farcically re-imagines the Watergate era and largely succeeds, thanks to quirky, winning performances from Michelle Williams, Kirsten Dunst and Will Ferrell.

' sborder=

Friday (1995)

Critics Consensus: What Friday might lack in taut construction or directorial flair, it more than makes up with its vibrant (albeit consistently crass) humor and the charming, energetic performances of its leads.

Where to Stream: Tubi

' sborder=

Ghostbusters (1984)

Critics Consensus: An infectiously fun blend of special effects and comedy, with Bill Murray’s hilarious deadpan performance leading a cast of great comic turns.

Where to Stream: YouTube

' sborder=

Ghostbusters (2016)

Critics Consensus: Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy — even if it can’t help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original.

Where to Stream: Freevee

' sborder=

The Invisible Man (2020)

Critics Consensus: Smart, well-acted, and above all scary, The Invisible Man proves that sometimes, the classic source material for a fresh reboot can be hiding in plain sight.

Where to Stream: Freevee March 19

' sborder=

Jack Reacher (2012)

Critics Consensus: Jack Reacher is an above-average crime thriller with a smoothly charismatic performance from Tom Cruise.

' sborder=

Julie & Julia (2009)

Critics Consensus: Boosted by Meryl Streep’s charismatic performance as Julia Child, Julie and Julia is a light, but fairly entertaining culinary comedy

' sborder=

The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)

Critics Consensus: The Killing of a Sacred Deer continues director Yorgos Lanthimos’ stubbornly idiosyncratic streak — and demonstrates again that his is a talent not to be ignored.

' sborder=

Lady Bird (2017)

Critics Consensus: Lady Bird delivers fresh insights about the turmoil of adolescence — and reveals writer-director Greta Gerwig as a fully formed filmmaking talent.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV , Tubi , Vudu , YouTube

' sborder=

The Lookout (2007)

Critics Consensus: The Lookout is a genuinely suspenseful and affecting noir due to the great ensemble cast and their complex, realistic characters.

' sborder=

Mr. Mom (1983)

Critics Consensus: Mr. Mom makes up for its stereotype-driven premise with a sweet script and charming work from a well-matched cast led by Michael Keaton and Teri Garr.

Where to Stream: Pluto TV , Tubi

' sborder=

Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire (2009)

Critics Consensus: Precious is a grim yet ultimately triumphant film about abuse and inner-city life, largely bolstered by exceptional performances from its cast.

' sborder=

The Queen (2006)

Critics Consensus: Full of wit, humor, and pathos, Stephen Frears’ moving portrait looks at life of the British royals during the period after Princess Diana’s death.

' sborder=

Reservoir Dogs (1992)

Critics Consensus: Thrumming with intelligence and energy, Reservoir Dogs opens Quentin Tarantino’s filmmaking career with hard-hitting style.

' sborder=

Rounders (1998)

Critics Consensus: Richly atmospheric and colorful performances contributed to the movie’s entertainment value.

' sborder=

Safe (2012)

Critics Consensus: While hard-hitting and violently inventive, Safe ultimately proves too formulaic to set itself apart from the action thriller pack — including some of its star’s better films.

' sborder=

Saving Private Ryan (1998)

Critics Consensus: Anchored by another winning performance from Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg’s unflinchingly realistic war film virtually redefines the genre.

' sborder=

A Simple Favor (2018)

Critics Consensus: Twisty, twisted, and above all simply fun, A Simple Favor casts a stylish mommy noir spell strengthened by potent performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively.

' sborder=

A Simple Plan (1998)

Critics Consensus: A riveting crime thriller full of emotional tension.

' sborder=

21 Jump Street (2012)

Critics Consensus: A smart, affectionate satire of ’80s nostalgia and teen movie tropes, 21 Jump Street offers rowdy mainstream comedy with a surprisingly satisfying bite.

' sborder=

22 Jump Street (2014)

Critics Consensus: Boasting even more of the bromantic chemistry between its stars — and even more of the goofy, good-natured humor that made its predecessor so much fun — 22 Jump Street is the rare sequel that improves upon the original.

' sborder=

The Virgin Suicides (1999)

Critics Consensus: The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola’s feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

' sborder=

Galaxy Quest (1999)

Critics Consensus: Intelligent and humorous satire with an excellent cast — no previous Trekkie knowledge needed to enjoy this one.

The Lighthouse (2019)

Critics Consensus: A gripping story brilliantly filmed and led by a pair of powerhouse performances, The Lighthouse further establishes Robert Eggers as a filmmaker of exceptional talent.

' sborder=

Little Women (1994)

Critics Consensus: Thanks to a powerhouse lineup of talented actresses, Gillian Armstrong’s take on Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women proves that a timeless story can succeed no matter how many times it’s told.

' sborder=

Strictly Ballroom (1992)

Critics Consensus: As emotionally rich as it is eye-catching, Strictly Ballroom uses its infectious energy as the fuel for a modern dance classic with all the right moves.

' sborder=

Swingers (1996)

Critics Consensus: Funny, heartfelt, and effortlessly cool, Swingers made stars out of Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau, established Doug Liman as a director to watch.

' sborder=

Child's Play (1988)

Critics Consensus: Child’s Play occasionally stumbles across its tonal tightrope of comedy and horror, but its genuinely creepy monster and some deft direction by Tom Holland makes this chiller stand out on the shelf.

' sborder=

Dead Man Walking (1995)

Critics Consensus: A powerful, thought-provoking film that covers different angles of its topic without resorting to preaching, Dead Man Walking will cause the viewer to reflect regardless of their political viewpoint.

' sborder=

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988)

Critics Consensus: A buoyant, clever update of the conman flick Bedtime Story , with plenty of comedic jousting resulting from a winning chemistry between Michael Caine and Steve Martin.

' sborder=

In & Out (1997)

Critics Consensus: It doesn’t always find comfortable ground between broad comedy and social commentary, but lively performances — especially from Kevin Kline and Joan Cusack — enrich In & Out ‘s mixture of laughs and sexual tolerance.

' sborder=

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)

Critics Consensus: Smart, funny, and profoundly melancholy, Inside Llewyn Davis finds the Coen brothers in fine form.

' sborder=

Mean Girls (2004)

Critics Consensus: Elevated by a brilliant screenplay and outstanding ensemble cast, Mean Girls finds fresh, female-fronted humor in the high school experience.

' sborder=

Moonstruck (1987)

Critics Consensus: Led by energetic performances from Nicolas Cage and Cher, Moonstruck is an exuberantly funny tribute to love and one of the decade’s most appealing comedies.

' sborder=

Mystic Pizza (1988)

Critics Consensus: Mystic Pizza is like its namesake food: it’s cheesy, topped with romance, and rises to the occasion.

' sborder=

The Raid 2 (2014)

Critics Consensus: Although its high-energy plot and over-the-top violence may play better with genre aficionados, The Raid 2 definitely delivers more of everything audiences loved about its predecessor.

' sborder=

Rain Man (1988)

Critics Consensus: This road-trip movie about an autistic savant and his callow brother is far from seamless, but Barry Levinson’s direction is impressive, and strong performances from Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman add to its appeal.

' sborder=

South Park: The Movie (1999)

Critics Consensus: Its jokes are profoundly bold and rude but incredibly funny at the same time.

' sborder=

Zola (2020)

Critics Consensus: Zola captures the stranger-than-fiction appeal of the viral Twitter thread that inspired it — and announces director/co-writer Janicza Bravo as a filmmaker to watch.

' sborder=

Thief (1981)

Critics Consensus: Thief ‘s enigmatic conclusion will rob some audiences of satisfaction, but it’s an authentic and sleekly rendered neo-noir, powered by a swaggering James Caan at the peak of his charisma.

' sborder=

Belfast (2021)

Critics Consensus: A deeply personal project for writer-director Kenneth Branagh, Belfast transcends its narrative deficits with powerful performances and directorial craft.

' sborder=

Chinatown (1974)

Critics Consensus: As bruised and cynical as the decade that produced it, this noir classic benefits from Robert Towne’s brilliant screenplay, director Roman Polanski’s steady hand, and wonderful performances from Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.

' sborder=

The Founder (2016)

Critics Consensus: The Founder puts Michael Keaton’s magnetic performance at the center of a smart, satisfying biopic that traces the rise of one of America’s most influential businessmen — and the birth of one of its most far-reaching industries.

The Best Free Movie Sites and Apps: Watch Free Movies Online

Here's where you can stream hundreds of movies online for free..

The Best Free Movie Sites and Apps: Watch Free Movies Online - IGN Image

As convenient as today's grand selection of paid streaming services is, sometimes it feels good to watch a movie knowing that you aren't paying for a subscription. Luckily, there is an array of websites and services that make this possible, even with the existence of their fierce competitors. While they are less sought-after or convenience incentivized than services like Netflix , Hulu , or HBO Max , they are perfect for those penny-pinching movie viewers looking to save. Since there are so many paid streaming services in 2024, for many–if not all–of the sites on this list, advertisements are an obvious obligation.

Since there are so many options that come up from a simple search, this list will be a guide for the free movie sites that tend to be a bit less risky than some alternative options. There are plenty of sites available that are illegal in multiple provinces and countries, it should be noted that the free movie websites and appson this list are all legal in the way that the streaming rights were acquired.

Paramount+ Free-Trial

You can also check out our guide on where to stream TV for free online .

The Roku Channel

movies websites cast

One of the few on this list that has its own original content, The Roku Channel is a unique option for the casual viewer. With no need to sign up or register, it’s easy to start streaming one of the many titles available. While it is one of the favored free sites to stream, the quality of content is somewhat limited, making it a good option to catch an arthouse film you may have missed. And if you’ve been wanting to watch the Weird Al movie , this is the only place you can.

With a surprisingly impressive interface, Pluto TV acts almost as an interactive TV Guide of movies and TV shows. With multiple options for the layout, anyone who visits this site–no registration required–will have access to a fairly large catalog of movies. While there are no popup or banner ads, there are still ads that may interrupt in the middle of a scene or dialogue.

A site with a higher standard of big movies available for free, Plex is a good choice for the money-saving cinephile. After a quick sign-in through Google, Facebook, or Apple, a viewer can watch many popular movies with the cast, internet ratings, and reviews from mainstream sites right there in the film summary section. On top of that, Plex is available to stream through the app on an extremely wide array of devices.

For those skeptical about the safety of various unknown websites, a well-known and overall trusted source of free movies is YouTube . While all of the movies contain a higher frequency of ads than other sites, the amount of mainstream options available here is worth the look. Since it’s a familiar layout for most, navigating the site shouldn’t cause any holdups.

Another of the sites on this list growing in popularity, Tubi rivals the best when it comes to layout and movie selection. While it resembles Netflix in look and interface, Tubi is one of the few options here that are only available in some countries: the U.S. included. It’s also got some nostalgic classics that might interest the millennial crowd.

Tubi is also a great place to stream anime for free , making it a very well-rounded service.

While Crackle carries a lot of generally unknown sequels or continuations of movie series, the sheer amount of content is enough to justify a visit. Regarding safety, this site is among the more easily trustworthy sites, as Sony is held to a much higher standard than your everyday streaming site. Along with these other pros, the ads are actually a bit lower in frequency and annoyance than the other sites.

Taking on more of an Amazon feel, Vudu has options for purchasable, rentable, on-sale, or free movies. While there are not multitudes of ideal options for movies free to watch, it still remains another good option if you’re looking for a very particular movie. As a huge bonus, the ads for this website are quite minimal in comparison to other sites mentioned.

Freevee (fka IMDB TV)

movies websites cast

A sub-site of Amazon (formerly IMDB), Freevee has transitioned to an app-only format that requires an Amazon sign-in. Obviously available through Amazon Prime, free movies from Freevee can also be streamed via Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Echo Show, and more. While the library is not as expansive as some, users can feel a sense of comfort streaming through a website they may already be subscribed to: Amazon.

Another site where streaming live TV is an option, XUMO Play has some pretty great movie options that arguably rival the other services, depending on what a viewer is looking for. With specialized lists of movies and vast device compatibility, this is an underrated underdog of a streaming site.

movies websites cast

Quite unique to this list, registration is required but the criteria needed for registration are a bit strange. In order to sign up for this ad-free, simultaneously streaming website, one needs to have either a public library card or a university login. The options are better than most for movies after registration, all of which can be enjoyed on your TV, mobile phone, tablet, or online. Kanopy is a great way to get free movies without ads.

Popcornflix

movies websites cast

Popcornflix is another way to get your free movie and TV show fix (no pun intended). No registration is required, though you will have to sit through ads with whatever you choose to watch. It has quite the range of shows and films as well, both in genre and release, so you're sure to find something to suit your next movie night or TV binge-watch.

More Ways to Watch Free Movies Online in 2024

Another great way to watch free movies online is by taking advantage of free trials from different streaming services . If you're not already a member, both Prime Video and Hulu offer a 30-day free trial, but the latter depends on what plan you're interested in. At the moment, you can take advantage of the 30-day free trial on Hulu by signing up for their No Ads plan (which is $14.99/month once the trial ends). Paramount+ and Apple TV+ also offer a free trial period, though they're both 7 days long rather than 30 days.

You can filter by age, gender location, and even union status. But it also acts as a kind of casting streamlining tool. You post a job, and immediately get seen by 250,000 actors looking for jobs like yours. Message and manage your talent selections all in the site.

Cast your next project with Backstage

It's also great for actors looking to find jobs. We really can't recommend this all-in-one tool enough.

"Classic" Casting Solution

2. Actors Access

Actors access is a casting website built around “the breakdown.”.

No, no, not the emotional state after spilling hot coffee on yourself.  A breakdown is a notice that casting offices release to agents containing important information about the production.

This includes a synopsis, character descriptions, proposed locations and the principal production staff.

Casting Websites-Actors Access-StudioBinder

Actors Access is a premier source for casting breakdowns.

Actors Access is definitely at the top of the list. As it so happens, Actors Access is owned by  Breakdown Services Inc , one of the premier breakdown distributors in the industry.

Because of this, Actors Access is one of the best casting websites for both actors and casting directors.

Actors Access offers every service the actor and casting director could want.

This includes the ability to upload and maintain headshots, resumes, and reels.

And yes, it is free to create an account.

Here’s what it includes:

  • 24/7 access to breakdowns.
  • The ability to upload 2 photos, a resume, and a size card.
  • A Slate Shot , which is a seven-second video clip of an actor introducing themselves.
  • There are no monthly maintenance fees for Actors Access, but keep in mind, any additional profile elements must be purchased.
  • $10 per photo
  • $22 per minute of video
  • $11 per minute of audio
  • $5 for an additional Slate Shot

Actors Access also offers a service called  Showfax , which allows members to browse sides for upcoming projects.

One of the things you need to have at your audition is script sides . A script side is very simply a portion of your script. You normally need these for two reasons:

  • To print out the pages you will record on a specific shoot day.
  • To print for actors to have a sample scene to perform in an audition.

Creating script sides traditionally used to be a hassle, and would require you to search through your script to find out which scenes have which roles, and then you need to specify which pages you wan to print out — all of this eating up valuable time.

Now, it is much easier to create script sides when casting:

Creating casting sides with StudioBinder

For instance, if we were casting Mia (Emma Stone) in La La Land, we might want to just have actors audition using the coffee shop scenes. Check out our script sides for the Mia/Coffee Shop auditions below:

As you can see, there are no hanging pages or portions of scenes. Make sure to print and bring those script sides with you to your audition.

Free Casting Call Website

3. Casting Frontier

When discussing the best free casting websites, one has to mention  casting frontier..

Casting Websites-Casting Frontier-StudioBinder

Casting websites like Casting Frontier streamlined the distribution of materials.

Casting Frontier is often thought of as one the premier innovators of digital casting tools.

Now back in the old days of Hollywood, acting auditions were grueling for both the casting directors and the actors.

Casting directors were pulling their hair out trying to ship audition materials across the country.

And the actors themselves were burning through money on high-quality headshots.

Then in 2006, Casting Frontier launched iSession, a digital platform that permitted casting directors to upload audition materials to their clients.

The move was revolutionary and helped to make it one of the most revered casting websites for both actors and casting directors.

With Casting Frontier, members can submit to casting calls for commercials, TV shows, feature films as well as print and digital content.

Here’s what the free account includes

  • An online resume
  • Limited direct casting submissions.

Now, if you want further options, you’ll have to upgrade to a higher membership level.

CASTING FRONTIER PREMIUM PLAN

$75.99/year (or pay monthly for $12.99/month)

It includes the following:

  • 5 headshots
  • Unlimited headshot changes
  • Unlimited direct casting submissions

  • Online Resume

CASTING FRONTIER PREMIUM PLUS PLAN

  • Digital video reel

Although the free membership doesn’t include some of the bells and whistles as the premium, it’s still an effective means of getting your materials seen on one of best casting websites in the industry.

Casting Networks offers customizable multimedia profiles.

Casting Networks Inc. sought to change all that and became the first system to put the entire casting process online.

With customizable multimedia profiles and access to new jobs posted daily through their Talent casting portal , this casting website is consistently at the forefront of casting solutions.

Casting Networks Inc. does offer a free account, but there is a catch.

In order to register for free, you MUST have agency representation.

Without representation, there is a $25 annual fee.

Although not spending money is always preferable, Casting Networks inc. does offer members a lot for $25.

Here’s what the membership includes:

  • Profile searchable by Casting Directors and Agents
  • Personalized URL to your online resume

SAG-AFTRA provides a service called iActor .

Casting Cautionary Tales

Be cautious with casting websites

As with many things in the entertainment business, one needs to approach free casting call websites with the same caution they would anything else..

First, "free" doesn't necessarily mean 100% free. Many sites do provide premium solutions for a price. In many cases, these offerings are well worth the price tag, but just don't be surprised when you hit a limit of some sort. Like most things, nothing is really ever "free."

Secondly, be mindful that not all free casting websites have a strong vetting process. It’s important for actors to be mindful of where and to whom they are submitting materials.

Here are some casting website warning signs to watch out for:

PROMISES OF HIGH PAY

If you come across a notice that reads, “Earn $500 per day as an extra, no experience required,” chances are the offer is too good to be true.

Promises like these are red flags for casting websites and should be approached with caution.

For example, the SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actor's Guild) rate for extras in Los Angeles is $148 per day. And that’s the rate for due-paying members. Non-union jobs often pay much less.

You can find more information about daily acting rates on  the SAG-AFTRA website .

PROMISES OF STARDOM

As much as you may not want to hear it, legitimate casting websites do not guarantee fame and fortune.

Now, of course, they want to provide all the helpful resources they can, but also know it’s irresponsible to promise something so uncertain.

Whether they’re free or paid, be aware of this when you’re navigating casting websites.

RUSH CASTING CALLS AND IMMEDIATE AUDITIONS

Yes, legitimate casting websites and agencies will occasionally cast last minute, but often require an actor to submit a headshot and resume in advance of the actual audition.

Be wary of postings that do not follow this procedure.

CASTING CALL ADS ON CRAIGSLIST

Production companies in major markets use established casting agencies to acquire extras for their shows.

These agencies do not advertise on Craigslist, in classified ads, or through someone handing out fliers on a street corner.

If a posting on Craigslist claims to be representing NBC/UNIVERSAL, for instance, it’s probably not something you should pursue.

ALL TYPES, AGES AND ETHNICITIES WANTED

For most roles, a specific look is required.

If a free casting website claims a role would be right for anyone, chances are it’s right for no one.

Make sure that any opportunity you pursue has a clear picture of what you would be auditioning for.

HIDDEN IDENTITIES

If you see a post that reads, “Wonderful casting company hiring in abandoned, haunted warehouse after 11 pm,” then run away!

Casting Websites-Walking Dead-StudiBinder

Legitimate casting agencies will never hide their identity. The Walking Dead (2017)

Major market agencies will never hide their identity, or be available in the wee hours of the night. Or hang out in an abandoned warehouse for that matter.

Vague contact information is usually a good test of whether something is a scam or not.

Ultimately, legitimate casting agencies have legitimate websites.

If you’re uncertain about a casting website, enter their web address into Who Is Hosting This .

By using the service, you’ll be able to see when and by whom the site was created.

If this is a reputable casting agency, you should have no trouble connecting the people on the website to actual people in the industry.

Wrapping up

More casting websites.

The convenience of casting websites like Backstage and Actors Access has revolutionized the way actors and casting directors navigate the production world.

Although there are limitations on some of the free-service memberships offered by these sites, they are excellent starting places to familiarize yourself with the casting process.

Joss Whedon once said, “Casting is storytelling.” Without casting the story would not exist. It’s that vital reality that makes casting websites so important to the individual and the arts as a whole.

New on Netflix

The beautiful game.

Micheal Ward ( Empire of Light ) also stars as Vinny, the talented but troubled player on the team whose skills might deliver them the championship.

The Wages of Fear

A man in a kevlar vest holding a large container of nitroglycerine in The Wages of Fear (2024).

Genre: Thriller Run time: 1h 28m Director: Julien Leclercq Cast: Franck Gastambide, Alban Lenoir, Ana Girardot

The third remake of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s classic 1953 thriller follows a team of drivers who are tasked with a deadly mission: Deliver two truckloads of highly volatile nitroglycerine across a desert to douse a deadly gas explosion. This version of The Wages of Fear stars a cast of big-name French talent, including Alban Lenoir of Lost Bullet fame.

When You Finish Saving the World

New on MGM Plus

The boys in the boat.

Where to watch: Available to stream on MGM Plus

A boatful of men rowing across a lake.

Genre: Sports biopic Run time: 2h 3m Director: George Clooney Cast: Joel Edgerton, Callum Turner, Jack Mulhern

When I think of the 1936 Summer Olympics, I think of Jesse Owens and the incredible things he accomplished in the sprint and long jump events in front of a German crowd passionately rooting against him. But another group of Americans also made history while vying for Olympic glory — the University of Washington rowing team, a group of working-class athletes whose story is told in George Clooney’s latest directorial effort.

New on Peacock

Lisa frankenstein.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Peacock

Lisa laying in bed beside the Creature, stroking his hair.

Genre: Comedy horror Run time: 1h 41m Director: Zelda Williams Cast: Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano

Writer-producer Diablo Cody ( Jennifer’s Body ) and director Zelda Williams’ latest film is a fiendishly funny horror comedy inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein . Kathryn Newton ( Freaky ) stars as Lisa, a lonely and misunderstood teenage girl who finds love in the most unexpected of places: the reanimated corpse of a Victorian-era man (Cole Sprouse).

From our review :

Many of Lisa Frankenstein ’s individual scenes are strong, but like the decaying male lead, the movie could use more connective tissue. One of the movie’s first scenes takes place at a party, and drags on way longer than it needs to, burying Lisa in the shuffle of moving parts. When Lisa first encounters the Creature, there’s an involved sequence as she runs away from him, through the house, ultimately dangling out of a window in an effort to get away. But not even a full minute later, she’s tenderly taking care of him, before she even recognizes that he’s the same man whose grave she’s been enamored with.

New on Mubi

The settlers.

Where to watch: Available to stream on Mubi

Three stern-looking men mounted on horseback with a forest of trees and bushes in the distance.

Genre: Crime drama Run time: 1h 37m Director: Felipe Gálvez Haberle Cast: Camilo Arancibia, Mark Stanley, Benjamin Westfall

This revisionist Western follows three horsemen: a Chilean marksman (Camilo Arancibia), British lieutenant (Mark Stanley), and an American mercenary (Benjamin Westfall) who embark on a mission to “secure” a wealthy landowner’s plot of land. After realizing the true scope and intent of their expedition, tensions flare between the men.

New to rent

The taste of things.

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon , Apple , and Vudu

Benoît Magimel as “Dodin”, taste testing something

Genre: Romance drama Run time: 2h 16m Director: Tran Anh Hung Cast: Juliette Binoche, Benoît Magimel, Emmanuel Salinger

This historical romance follows the story of Eugenie (Juliette Binoche) and Dodin (Benoît Magimel), a cook and a gourmand who live in a French country estate in 1889. Though the two are in love, Eugenie refuses to marry Dodin, and wishes to keep their relationship as it is. Desperate to woo her, Dodin takes up cooking in order to prepare a meal that will sweep her off her feet.

The Peasants

A painted shot of a woman in a white dress and floral crown dancing with a man in a room filled with people.

Genre: Animated historical drama Run time: 1h 54m Directors: DK Welchman, Hugh Welchman Cast: Kamila Urzędowska, Robert Gulaczyk, Mirosław Baka

Loving Vincent directing duo DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman return with yet another period drama composed of live-action footage and thousands of hand-painted images. Set in a 19th-century Polish village rife with feuding and gossip, a young woman named Jagna strives desperately to forge a life for herself beyond the expectations of those around her.

A woman riding on the back of a bicycle while another woman pedals and smiles.

Genre: Drama Run time: 1h 33m Director: Anthony Chen Cast: Cynthia Erivo, Alia Shawkat, Ibrahima Ba

After escaping her war-torn country, a Liberian refugee named Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo) settles on a Greek island in hopes of building a new life. She befriends a directionless American tour guide (Alia Shawkat), and the pair grow closer together and help one another to confront their past trauma.

Stop Making Sense

David Byrne, wearing his signature suit, holds the microphone towards the camera in Stop Making Sense.

Genre: Concert movie Run time: 1h 28m Director: Jonathan Demme

You may find yourself at home on your couch, looking for something to watch. And you may find yourself scrutinizing what’s new on streaming and VOD. And you may find yourself intrigued by the latest 4K remaster of Jonathan Demme’s acclaimed concert film of the Talking Heads performing. And you may ask yourself, Well, why don’t I watch that?

Lousy Carter

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple , and Vudu

A bearded man smiling behind a desk with a chalkboard visible in the background.

Genre: Black comedy Run time: 1h 20m Director: Bob Byington Cast: David Krumholtz, Olivia Thirlby, Jocelyn DeBoer

After learning that he has only six months to live, a deadbeat college professor makes a last-ditch effort to realize his dreams and not be such a lousy person. Incidentally, he’s also sleeping with the wife of his “best friend,” who hates him. Wow!

DeWanda Wise in Imaginary stands in a shadowy room wearing a yellow dress with stains on it

Genre: Horror thriller Run time: 1h 44m Director: Jeff Wadlow Cast: DeWanda Wise, Taegen Burns, Pyper Braun

This supernatural horror film from director Jeff Wadlow ( Kick-Ass 2 ) follows the story of Jessica (DeWanda Wise), a children’s book author who returns to her childhood home with her new family. Jessica’s stepdaughter Alice forms a bond with her old stuffed teddy bear, and things quickly grow out of hand when she starts committing gruesome acts on behalf of her new imaginary friend.

It’s tempting to try to read into this labyrinth of digressions to try to find some kind of meaning or intention, but Imaginary never makes that feel worthwhile. There isn’t a single character in the movie who feels worth rooting for, and the performances are entirely devoid of charisma. The script, written by Wadlow, Jason Oremland, and Greg Erb, is full of wooden dialogue that’s stiff and often feels almost completely nonsensical. Characters sometimes introduce new information like it’s a fact the audience has known forever.

The 10 most unnecessary movie trilogies in movie history — sorry

  • Sometimes, a story needs three installments to be told fully.
  • But, sometimes, a movie is such a big hit that the story is stretched out over three films.
  • Or, in the case of "The Hangover," the same story is told three times in a row.

Insider Today

It's no secret that intellectual property is one of the most important commodities in Hollywood. The top 10 grossing movies of 2023 internationally were all either sequels or based on books, video games, or toys.

One of those films, " Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ," was the final installment of a much-beloved trilogy of superhero films. It was a huge hit with critics and fans, making $845 million worldwide.

But that's the best-case scenario.

Just as often, a series will be let down by its final installment or audiences find it didn't need to be turned into a trilogy at all. In one case, a series wasn't even supposed to be a trilogy, but the third film performed so poorly that the fourth film never materialized.

Here are the worst, most unnecessary trilogies in movie history.

Based on a book series, "Divergent" was supposed to be a four-film story, but "Allegiant" was so poorly received the studio only made three.

movies websites cast

After the success of movie series like " Harry Potter ," " The Hunger Games ," and " Twilight ," studios were on the hunt for the next big YA book-to-movie adaptation.

Enter "Divergent" in 2014, a film that takes place in a dystopian world where society is split into five factions, each dedicated to a specific personality trait. People who fit into more than one category are called divergent and are considered dangerous.

If you're confused, we understand — the lore of these movies is borderline incomprehensible. Not even actors like Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, and Kate Winslet could make this movie interesting.

The first film did well enough, making almost $290 million worldwide, so a second film, "Insurgent," was made in 2015. When it didn't make much more than "Divergent," it became clear the series was in trouble.

"Allegiant" was released in 2016 and made less than its predecessors. It was also poorly received by fans and critics alike.

It was announced that the final installment, "Ascendant," would go straight to streaming, but some cast members reportedly weren't on board with that move, so the story of Tris (Woodley) will forever remain unfinished on screen.

That might be a good thing — fans widely reviled the conclusion of the book series.

It stings that "The Hobbit" movies are so boring, because "The Lord of the Rings" is one of the best trilogies of all time.

movies websites cast

" The Lord of the Rings " is based on a behemoth of a book series by J.R.R. Tolkien. Whole characters and plotlines had to be cut from the books when director Peter Jackson adapted them to the big screen.

On the other hand, the prequel story "The Hobbit" is told in around 290 pages, give or take the edition you have.

So, why did they stretch this positively breezy story to three movies released from 2012 to 2014?

Yes, these three movies did make $1 billion altogether, but they're not well-regarded by all fans and have nowhere near the cultural staying power that the original trilogy does.

Stick with the story of Frodo and the Fellowship — trust us.

"Cars" is only one of two Pixar movies that got more than one sequel, and we don't understand why.

movies websites cast

"Toy Story" is the only other Pixar franchise that has more than two installments. "Toy Story"! One of the most beloved Pixar films of all time!

And then there's "Cars," released in 2006.

"Cars 2" (2011) is perhaps a nadir for Pixar , and then, instead of letting Lightning McQueen and Co. drive off into the sunset, we got "Cars 3" in 2017, the lowest-grossing film of the franchise.

Why couldn't we get "Incredibles 3" instead?

Did you even know that they made three "Chronicles of Narnia" films?

movies websites cast

From 2005 to 2010, three "Chronicles of Narnia" films were released: "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" in 2005, "Prince Caspian" in 2008, and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" in 2010.

A fourth film was planned but never materialized, and now that Greta Gerwig will be directing a reboot for Netflix, as reported by Deadline , we'll probably never think about these movies again.

We're thankful that this series gave us two things: James McAvoy as Mr. Tumnus, and a hilarious meme about Aslan telling someone not to cite the deep magic to him since he was there when it was written.

The "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy was more well-known for its soundtracks than its films.

The only person who hated their own franchise more than Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson apparently hated being in "Fifty Shades" is "Twilight's" Robert Pattinson , which is ironic since "Fifty Shades of Grey" and its two sequels are based on "Twilight" fan-fiction .

"Love Me Like You Do," "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," and "Earned It," which came from the first two film's soundtracks, were great songs and, ultimately, hits.

But by the time "Fifty Shades Freed" rolled around in 2018, the lead single was by Rita Ora and Liam Payne — it just didn't hit like the earlier bops by Taylor Swift, Zayn, The Weeknd, and Ellie Goulding.

It's criminal that there are three "Hangover" films.

There's not much to say other than: How is it possible that the same group of friends keep blacking out around the world?

Why did we need high-concept sequels to a hilarious yet very simple film?

Jacob Elordi would prefer you forget the "Kissing Booth" trilogy, which was released between 2018 and 2021.

Elordi, star of "Saltburn," "Euphoria," and "Priscilla," made headlines when he called "The Kissing Booth" movies "ridiculous" in a 2023 interview with British GQ .

Much has been written about how problematic (at best) these films are, so all we have to add is that a huge component of these movies is a love of the video game "Dance Dance Revolution," which was initially released in the late 1990s.

Does Gen Z even know what "DDR" is?

There are supposed to be more "Fantastic Beasts" movies, but it's not looking good.

Perhaps no franchise is more cursed than "Fantastic Beasts" right now.

JK Rowling has been called out for her transphobic rhetoric , star Johnny Depp was fired from the second film after many controversies , and the third film is based on the mystery of a character played by Ezra Miller, who is also a problematic figure in pop culture right now.

The third film, "Secrets of Dumbledore," also managed to anger fans with a final reveal that disrupts years of canon and is the lowest-grossing Wizarding World movie to date.

We'll potentially never get those fourth and fifth "Fantastic Beasts" movies — instead, Warner Bros. is pivoting towards a rebooted "Harry Potter" series on Max.

It's hard to suspend your disbelief for one "Taken" movie, let alone three.

"Taken" was a surprise hit upon its release in 2008, making over $226 million against a $25 million budget.

But, did we really need a sequel where Liam Neeson's character Bryan has to, yet again, show off his particular set of skills to a new group of kidnappers in 2012's "Taken 2"?

We certainly didn't need 2014's "Taken 3," where Bryan has to deal with the death of his ex-wife and his daughter Kim getting kidnapped again.

"A Christmas Prince" did not need two sequels.

When "A Christmas Prince" dropped on Netflix in 2017, people were delighted with how ridiculous it was. None of the journalism in the movie makes sense , no one acts like a human , and it has the predictable happy ending of the Hallmark holiday movies that it's clearly indebted to.

However, the campiness had diminishing returns in 2018's "The Royal Wedding," which deals with financial corruption, and in 2019's "The Royal Baby," which adds international relations and a immense amount of debt.

‘Opening Night’ Review: A Stylish Movie Becomes a Sludgy Travesty

Ivo van Hove’s stage adaptation of the 1977 John Cassavetes film, with music by Rufus Wainwright, turns a taut character study into a corny melodrama.

A woman in a purple dress stands with her hands purple onstage, in front of a large projection of her face on a screen behind.

By Houman Barekat

The critic Houman Barekat saw “Opening Night” in London.

In a London auditorium, a work of art is being desecrated. “Opening Night,” John Cassavetes’s understatedly stylish 1977 movie about an actress struggling with midlife ennui, has been reimagined as a musical by the Belgian director Ivo van Hove, and the result is a travesty.

Its antiheroine, the Broadway superstar Myrtle Gordon (Sheridan Smith), has landed the lead role in a play about a middle-aged woman. But she isn’t feeling it: Though she is about 40, she insists she can’t relate. She stumbles through rehearsals, clashing with the director, Manny (Hadley Fraser), and the playwright, Sarah (Nicola Hughes), then goes rogue during previews, taking liberties with the script.

To compound matters, the actress develops a neurotic fixation on Nancy (Shira Haas), a 17-year-old fan killed in a car crash moments after getting Myrtle’s autograph. Convinced that Nancy is a cipher for her own lost youth, Myrtle intermittently hallucinates the dead girl’s ghost, and even converses with it. Myrtle is unraveling, but the show — somehow — must go on.

It’s a compelling story line, filled with dramatic possibilities, but “Opening Night,” which runs at the Gielgud Theater through July 27, is scuppered by a series of poor choices. Smith is miscast as Myrtle, for a start: Her onstage bearing exudes a homely approachability rather than high-strung poise or inscrutable aloofness.

Benjamin Walker is wooden as Maurice, Myrtle’s stage co-star and ex-partner, who Cassavetes himself played charmingly in the film. The estranged couple’s brittle onstage chemistry is an essential ingredient in the drama; here, they seem like actual strangers. Haas’s spectral Nancy is a disconcertingly cutesy symbol of youthful feminine vitality, a sprite-like figure who scurries around the stage in a short skirt, knee-high socks and platform boots — suggesting not so much a young woman as a pubescent child.

The songs, by Rufus Wainwright, are algorithmically bland. Several address aging, including the unsubtly titled “A Change of Life” (about menopause) and “Makes One Wonder,” a duet in which Myrtle and Sarah realize that, as women of a certain age, they may have more in common than they’d like to admit.

Others are about showbiz: “Magic” is an upbeat cabaret-style number about the wonder of the stage; “Moths to a Flame” is a somber, sentimental paean to the indefatigability of thespians everywhere. There is a brief foray into rock opera during an excruciating scene in which Myrtle, having figured out she must banish Nancy’s specter to get herself back on track, scuffles with the girl-child amid flashing strobe lights and 1980s-style power riffs. It’s so schlocky that it almost feels like a sendup.

Jan Versweyveld’s set is a theater within a theater. The rehearsal space occupies the foreground, and a row of vanity mirrors at the rear of the stage represents the backstage area. As in van Hove’s 2019 adaptation of “All About Eve ” — another story about the emotional travails of an aging actress — camera operators stalk its perimeter, transmitting close-up, real-time footage of the actors onto a big screen above the stage.

The idea is to ramp up the psychodrama by bringing us up close and personal, but there isn’t much intensity to intensify. The multiple angles add little to the experience. (The occasional bird’s-eye view is particularly unnecessary, unless you happen to have an interest in the topography of hairlines.) A screen caption at the start of the show informs us that a documentary film crew is recording the company’s rehearsals — a plot device that is supposed to make this camerawork feel less like a gratuitous gimmick, but so flimsily transparent that it has the opposite effect.

There are one or two good moments, including a tense rehearsal scene in which Myrtle objects to having to endure an onstage slap. She says it’s humiliating, but Manny insists it’s artistically necessary. Smith renders the standoff with a bleak comic pathos: At one point she even slaps herself to forestall the blow. (For van Hove, who is known for pushing his performers to the limit, this material is close to home.) Near the end, as the characters make their final preparations for opening night, the big screen cuts to recorded footage of theatergoers passing through the Gielgud foyer a couple of hours earlier — a clever touch that spurred a ripple of amused murmurs from the audience. But these are slim pickings.

As an artist yearning to take back control of her narrative, Myrtle should resonate at a time when questions of agency — for women and minorities, among others — are on many people’s minds. But van Hove’s corny treatment trivializes her suffering. Cassavetes’s movie had an elliptical quality that drew viewers in through the strength of its narrative artifice and the power of the actors’ performances; here, the story never comes to life, and the themes are labored. Van Hove has transformed a taut, subtly observed character study into a sludgy melodrama.
