Natural disasters are the consequence of natural phenomena unleashing processes that lead to physical damage and the loss of human lives and capital. Earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, windstorms, floods and droughts are some examples of natural disasters. These disasters disrupt the lives of communities and individuals and the economic activity of the affected area. Classification of Natural Disasters

Natural disasters result from forces of climate and geology. These are perhaps the most “unexpected” and costly overall in terms of loss of human lives and resources.

Disasters are classified into four categories depending on how they arise:

(1) Internal Earth Processes: It covers geophysical phenomena arising from the internal processes of the earth. It includes earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions etc., which human beings cannot usually predict or prevent.

(2) External Earth Processes: These comprise phenomena such as landslides, collapses, flooding, mudslides etc. These hazards can be avoided and are often associated with man-made alterations in the environment, such as deforestation on hillsides or excavations and many more such activities.

(3) Hydrometeorological Hazards: It is associated with changes in air and ocean temperature. This hazard is responsible for the formation of weather phenomena such as hurricanes and tornadoes, and the precipitation and climate variations that sometimes cause extreme flooding, storm surges, droughts and other hydrological phenomena.

(4) Biological Hazards: Biological disasters result from the proliferation of agents such as bacteria, viruses and toxins that can kill or disable people, harm animals, and crops and damage the environment. Some examples of biological hazards are cholera, dengue, yellow fever, Ebola virus and Marburg virus. The current pandemic situation due to Coronavirus is also an example of biological hazards.

Disaster Management

Disasters have massive human and economic costs. They may cause many deaths, severe injuries, and food shortages. Most incidents of severe injuries and deaths occur during the time of impact, whereas disease outbreaks and food shortages often arise much later, depending on the nature and duration of the disaster. Anticipating the potential consequences of disasters can help determine the actions that need to be started before the disaster strikes to minimize its effects.

Disasters are the ultimate test of a community’s emergency response capability. There are 3 major steps that can be taken to manage disaster which include pre-disaster management, during-disaster management and post-disaster management. The pre-disaster management involves generating data and information about the disasters, preparing vulnerability zoning maps and spreading awareness among the people about these. Apart from these, disaster planning, preparedness and preventive measures are other steps that need to be taken in vulnerable areas.

During disasters, rescue and relief operations such as evacuation, construction of shelters and relief camps, supplying of water, food, clothing and medical aids etc. should be done on an emergency basis. Post-disaster operations involve rehabilitation and recovery of victims. It should concentrate on capacity building in order to cope with future disasters, if any. These measures have special significance to India as about two-thirds of its geographical area and an equal proportion of its population are vulnerable to disasters. The Government of India has also taken some steps for disaster management such as passing the disaster management bill and the establishment of the National Institute of Disaster Management.

How to Deal with Natural Disasters?

India, due to its unique geographical character, faces natural disasters every year which cause massive harm to lives and property. Whether it be the floods of Uttarakhand in 2013 or the landslides in Western Ghats of Kerala. The cost of our blind exploitation of natural resources without showing reverence for the delicate balance of Nature has severely harmed us and we must learn lessons from these incidents.

One of the greatest stories of the Indian government in dealing with disaster readiness has been the story of the Indian state of Odisha. Odisha is a coastal state in eastern India that regularly faces cyclones that have caused great harm to the state. To deal with the menace of these cyclones the Odisha Government made an elaborate plan by taking the local communities in confidence and have successfully reduced the number of deaths in Odisha to a very small number which used to be in thousands earlier. Other Indian states should also learn from the experience of Odisha on how to improve disaster preparedness.

Natural disasters are the unforeseen occurrence of events or catastrophic events that causes harms to society. It is a dangerous events that could cause injury , loss of life or damage to property. Ever since man came to this earth, man has faced various natural calamities at different times.

Scientists around the world have researched about the causes of these disasters and made people aware of them.

Types of natural disasters

There are many kinds of natural disasters like volcanic eruption, storm, wild fire, lightning, hailstorm, ice storm, earthquake, thunderstorm, blizzard, tornado, tsunami, drought , flood and hurricane. Any kind of natural disasters bring with them destruction and ruin. They damage the environment and the people living in it. We will discuss some types of natural disasters here.

1.Volcanic eruptions

Volcanic eruptions occurs when lava or magma or hot material is released out from volcano. volcanoes emit hot lava, ash, and gas from underground. It comes up loudly. It is a system that can be slow and fast. After the eruption of the volcano, the lives of birds and animals are also affected, the birds die from the fire, smoke and heat emitted from it. Forest fires break out.

Human settlements, societies or cities are destroyed. Tambora produced the biggest volcanic eruption in 1815. It says roughly that 100,000 people died in it.

It is a prolonged period of unusual persistent of dry weather that causes serious problems such as shortage of water supply result in crops damage . A Drought can last for months or even year.

3. Earthquake

An earthquake is caused by a sudden shaking of the earth’s surface. Earthquakes cause cracks in the ground and strong tremors are felt.

According to scientists, due to the heat inside the last part of the earth, the heaviest object goes under the earth and the object which loses weight falls to the ground. As if oil is poured on the surface of the water comes. Similarly, when an object goes underground, it produces an electric current, which causes the earth’s plates to collide with each other, causing earthquakes. At the same time, many changes are taking place on the ground. For example , cracks in the ground, landslides, or the formation of mountains.

On October 8, 2005 a magnitude of 7.5 earthquake struck Pakistan . It is estimated that death toll could reach over 100,000.

4. Wild fire

Forest fires are fires that start naturally in forest trees or in an uninhabited green area. It is common to see wildfires in the summer. Due to the heat of the sun, the dry leaves catch fire and the whole forest comes under its grip. This type of fire is found in the pine forests of our country, Uttarakhand, India.

The effects of wildfires are devastating. Which also badly affects our natural environment. Over the past several centuries, it has emerged as a catastrophe. Recently, wildfire occur in California.

Tectonic Earthquake: The Earth’s crust comprises of the slab of rocks of uneven shapes. These slab of rocks are tectonic plates. Furthermore, there is energy stored here. This energy causes tectonic plates to push away from each other or towards each other. As time passes, the energy and movement build up pressure between two plates.

Therefore, this enormous pressure causes the fault line to form. Also, the center point of this disturbance is the focus of the Earthquake. Consequently, waves of energy travel from focus to the surface. This results in shaking of the surface.

Volcanic Earthquake: This Earthquake is related to volcanic activity. Above all, the magnitude of such Earthquakes is weak. These Earthquakes are of two types. The first type is Volcano-tectonic earthquake. Here tremors occur due to injection or withdrawal of Magma. In contrast, the second type is Long-period earthquake. Here Earthquake occurs due to the pressure changes among the Earth’s layers.

Collapse Earthquake: These Earthquakes occur in the caverns and mines. Furthermore, these Earthquakes are of weak magnitude. Undergrounds blasts are probably the cause of collapsing of mines. Above all, this collapsing of mines causes seismic waves. Consequently, these seismic waves cause an Earthquake.

Explosive Earthquake: These Earthquakes almost always occur due to the testing of nuclear weapons. When a nuclear weapon detonates, a big blast occurs. This results in the release of a huge amount of energy. This probably results in Earthquakes.

First of all, the shaking of the ground is the most notable effect of the Earthquake. Furthermore, ground rupture also occurs along with shaking. This results in severe damage to infrastructure facilities. The severity of the Earthquake depends upon the magnitude and distance from the epicenter. Also, the local geographical conditions play a role in determining the severity. Ground rupture refers to the visible breaking of the Earth’s surface.

Another significant effect of Earthquake is landslides. Landslides occur due to slope instability. This slope instability happens because of Earthquake.

In Unit 3, students apply their learning from the previous units to help educate others in being prepared for a natural disaster. They begin by researching in pairs the kinds of food to include in an emergency preparedness kit. For the mid-unit assessment, students then research the other necessary items to include in a kit. In Lessons 3-5, students write an opinion essay based on their research to explain which two items they think are most important to include in an emergency preparedness kit and why. This prepares them for the end of unit assessment, in which students write an on-demand opinion essay about the two personal items they would include in an emergency preparedness kit and why.

In Lessons 8-11, students prepare an educational leaflet to distribute at their performance task presentations explaining what to do in a natural disaster and the kinds of things to pack in an emergency preparedness kit. They create prompt cards for their presentations and practice them. For the performance task in front of a live audience, students present their PSAs, created in Unit 1, and describe the items they would pack in an emergency preparedness kit.

In this unit, students continue to read research texts independently for homework, and engage in frequent research reading shares during the module lesson for accountability.

The Meeting Students' Needs column in each lesson contains support for both ELLs and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and some supports can serve a wide range of student needs. However, ELLs have unique needs that cannot always be met with UDL support. If necessary, consider placing less focus on the peer critiques in Lessons 3, 4, and 11.

However, rather than analyzing a model essay focused on the writing prompt for this unit as they have done in previous modules, students revisit the Model Essay: Branch Rickey from Module 3. This provides students with structural support for their opinion essay, while allowing for gradual release to prepare students for writing on-demand essays. For students who may need additional support, see specific suggestions in the Supporting English Language Learners box and the Meeting Students' Needs column in Lessons 3-5.
  • Presentation structure and prompt cards: In Lessons 10-11, students build on their understanding of presentation structure from Module 3 to prepare prompt cards for their presentations in Lesson 12. In classrooms with many ELLs, work closely with groups to create their prompt cards and use color-coding to support this skill. Also, this presentation structure may be different from the structure students are familiar with in their home language. Compare and contrast home language presentation structure whenever possible.
  • Celebration: Celebrate the courage, enthusiasm, diversity, and bilingual assets that ELLs bring to the classroom.
  • Invite guests, including community and family members, to the performance task presentations in Lesson 12.
  • Prepare technology necessary for students to:
  • Research online in Lessons 1-2.
  • Word-process opinion essays in Lessons 3-7.
  • Create emergency preparedness leaflets in Lessons 8-9.
  • Play PSAs while practicing their presentations in Lesson 11.
  • Play PSAs for performance task in Lesson 12.
  • Prepare emergency preparedness kit(s) . Refer to the following site for more information on preparing an emergency preparedness kit: How the supplies are obtained for kits is dependent on school resources. For example, schools may provide the supplies and keep the kits in classrooms in case of an emergency. In following years, students could then review the contents based on current research and check the expiration dates on supplies in these kits. Students or community members could also donate supplies for one class kit, or students could provide supplies to create their own kits. How many kits you choose to create will depend on school/student resources and how you organize the presentations for the performance task. Options include:
  • Each student creates an emergency preparedness kit for his or her family.
  • A number of kits are created and then distributed to classrooms after the performance task.
  • One kit is created for the whole group.

The Additional Language and Literacy (ALL) Block is 1 hour of instruction per day. It is designed to work in concert with and in addition to the 1-hour Grades 3-5 ELA "module lessons." Taken together, these 2 hours of instruction comprehensively address all the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

The ALL Block has five components: Additional Work with Complex Text; Reading and Speaking Fluency/GUM (Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics); Writing Practice; Word Study and Vocabulary; and Independent Reading.

The ALL Block has three 2-week units which parallel to the three units of the module.

  • Visit an area affected by a natural disaster.
  • Share PSAs with other classes in the school.

  • Create emergency preparedness kits for classrooms in school.
  • Create emergency preparedness kits for local community organizations or families in need.
