It is important to state that businesses / facilities such arcades, themed amusement parks, gambling facilities, golf courses, country clubs, skiing facilities, marinas, fitness and recreational sports centers and bowling alleys are not part of the golf driving ranges & family fun centers industry.

If you have been following the Golf Driving Ranges and Family Fun Centers industry, you would have realized that the industry exhibited revenue growth in recent time, in spite of many consumers being time-strapped. While the industry struggled with mounting competition from alternative leisure activities, such as fitness, many operators generated industry revenue growth on the basis of convenience.

For example, golf driving ranges attracted time-strapped individuals, due to golf driving ranges being more time-efficient compared with consumers playing nine to 18 holes on the golf course.

Going forward, the revenue generated in the industry is projected to grow as operators in the golf driving ranges and family fun centers continue to enhance their product portfolios and services to attract families, regardless of their reduced time allotted for leisure and fun.

The Golf Driving Ranges & Family Fun Centers industry is indeed a very large industry and pretty much thriving in some parts of the world especially in developed countries such as United States of America, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and Italy et al.

The industry is responsible for directly employing about 156,658 employees and the industry rakes in a whooping sum of $11billion annually with an annual growth rate projected at 4.5 percent between 2011 and 2016. It is important to state that no establishment has a lion share of the available market in this industry.

A recent research published by IBISWORLD shows that during the past five years, the Golf Driving Ranges and Family Fun Centers industry exhibited growth due to many industry operators updating their facilities to attract consumers. This investment differentiated operators’ product portfolios from other consumer leisure activities, such as at-home digital entertainment.

The report further stated that, to attract budget-conscious consumers, some industry operators implemented coupons and discounts, which generated awareness about family fun centers and golf driving ranges as a local entertainment option.

Industry trend

Who doesn’t love go-karts?! You feel like a race car driver, hitting the gas and hugging those turns — but in a controlled environment. Go-karts were booming pre-pandemic, expanding 35% from 2012 to 2019. After a downturn in 2020, the industry is now coming back strong.

You start your own go-kart business and give people good times on the road while making good money. You could even grow your business to have go-kart tracks around the country like Pole Position Raceway or K1 Speed.

But first you’ll need to gather some information about how to start and run a business. Luckily, this step-by-step guide will push the gas pedal on your entrepreneurial knowledge and prepare you to launch a successful go-kart business.

Looking to register your business? A limited liability company (LLC) is the best legal structure for new businesses because it is fast and simple.

  • Room to Expand – Add a mini golf course or driving range
  • Large Investment – Spend money on building a track and go-karts

  • Today’s go-kart tracks are getting bigger, longer and more complicated in order to stand out and attract customers.
  • Go-kart racing is one of the world’s most popular motorsports, with an estimated 35M people participating annually in the US alone.

Challenges in the go-kart industry include:

  • Even with today’s technology, go-karts require a lot of upkeep, creating significant ongoing expenses.
  • Lawsuits can occur if users are not properly informed of safety rules. Go-kart businesses must have strict procedures in place to mitigate potential liability.

go-kart industry Trends and Challenges

How much does it cost to start a go-kart business?

Startup costs for a go-kart business range from $215,000 to $380,000. Costs include the rental or purchase of a large space or property, such as a warehouse or parking lot. Then there’s track construction, vehicles and safety equipment, and a labor and operating budget.

You’ll need a handful of items to successfully launch your go-kart business, including:

  • Safety equipment
  • Maintenance tools

How much can you earn from a go-kart business?

For a high-end track, a single go-kart race should cost about $25 per person. Your profit margin after labor and overhead costs should be about 20%.

In your first year or two, you might have 10 go-karts rented 5 times a day, bringing in more than $456,000 in annual revenue. This would mean $91,000 in profit, assuming that 20% margin. As your track becomes more popular, you might rent 10 carts for 20 races a day. With annual revenue of $1,825,000, you’d make an outstanding profit of $365,000.

What barriers to entry are there?

Step 2: hone your idea.

Now that you know what’s involved in starting a go-kart business, it’s a good idea to hone your concept in preparation to enter a competitive market.

Market research will give you the upper hand, even if you’re already positive that you have a perfect product or service. Conducting market research is important, because it can help you understand your customers better, who your competitors are, and your business landscape.

Why? Identify an opportunity

Research go-kart businesses in your area to examine their services, price points, and customer reviews. You’re looking for a market gap to fill. For instance, maybe the local market is missing a go-kart business that also has a miniature golf course or a golf driving range .

outdoor go kart business plan

You might consider targeting a niche market by specializing in a certain aspect of your industry, such as go-kart racing for corporate or family events.

This could jumpstart your word-of-mouth marketing and attract clients right away.

What? Determine your products or services

Your services will depend on how you build your facilities. In addition to go-kart racing, you could offer mini golf or a driving range. You could also have arcade games and offer food and beverages.

How much should you charge for go-kart racing?

The average price for a high-end go-kart race is $25 per person. After the costs of labor and overhead, you should aim for a profit margin of about 20%.

Once you know your costs, you can use this Step By Step profit margin calculator to determine your mark-up and final price points. Remember, the prices you use at launch should be subject to change if warranted by the market.

Who? Identify your target market

Your target market may tend to be younger, but it’s not exclusive to young people. You should spread out your marketing to include sites like TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.

Where? Choose your go-kart location

Selecting the right location for your go-kart business is crucial for attracting customers and ensuring its success. Look for a spot with ample space for a track, parking, and facilities, such as a warehouse or a retail space. Consider accessibility and convenience, ensuring that the location is easily reachable by car and has ample parking.

Additionally, assess the local regulations and zoning laws to ensure compliance and obtain any necessary permits. Depending on the type of go-kart experience you plan to offer, you may also want to consider the proximity to entertainment venues, restaurants, or other attractions.

By strategically choosing the right location, you can establish a profitable and popular go-kart business that offers a fun and exciting experience for customers and stands out in the competitive entertainment industry. You can find commercial space to rent in your area on sites such as Craigslist , Crexi , and Instant Offices .

Step 3: Brainstorm a Go-kart Business Name

Your business name is your business identity, so choose one that encapsulates your objectives, services, and mission in just a few words. You probably want a name that’s short and easy to remember, since much of your business, and your initial business in particular, will come from word-of-mouth referrals.

Here are some ideas for brainstorming your business name:

  • Short, unique, and catchy names tend to stand out
  • Names that are easy to say and spell tend to do better
  • Name should be relevant to your product or service offerings
  • Ask around — family, friends, colleagues, social media — for suggestions
  • Including keywords, such as “go-karts” or “go-kart racing”, boosts SEO
  • Name should allow for expansion, for ex: “Speed Racer’s Go-Karts” over “Kids Go-Karts”
  • Avoid location-based names that might hinder future expansion
  • Use online tools like the Step by Step Business Name Generator . Just type in a few keywords and hit “generate” and you’ll have dozens of suggestions at your fingertips.

Once you’ve got a list of potential names, visit the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office to make sure they are available for registration and check the availability of related domain names using our Domain Name Search tool. Using “.com” or “.org” sharply increases credibility, so it’s best to focus on these.

Find a Domain

Powered by GoDaddy.com

Finally, make your choice among the names that pass this screening and go ahead with domain registration and social media account creation. Your business name is one of the key differentiators that sets your business apart. Once you pick your company name, and start with the branding, it is hard to change the business name. Therefore, it’s important to carefully consider your choice before you start a business entity.

Step 4: Create a Go-kart Business Plan

Every business needs a plan. This will function as a guidebook to take your startup through the launch process and maintain focus on your key goals. A business plan also enables potential partners and investors to better understand your company and its vision:

  • Executive Summary: A concise overview of the go-kart business, highlighting its key aspects and objectives.
  • Business Overview: Detailed information about the go-kart business, including its mission, vision, and core values.
  • Product and Services: Description of the go-kart products and services offered, emphasizing their unique features and benefits.
  • Market Analysis: Examination of the target market, customer demographics, and trends influencing the go-kart industry.
  • Competitive Analysis: Evaluation of competitors in the go-kart market, highlighting strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
  • Sales and Marketing: Strategies for promoting and selling go-kart products, encompassing advertising, pricing, and distribution channels.
  • Management Team: Introduction of key team members involved in running the go-kart business, emphasizing their relevant expertise.
  • Operations Plan: Detailed plan outlining the day-to-day operations of the go-kart business, including facilities, equipment, and processes.
  • Financial Plan: Financial projections, budgets, and funding requirements for the go-kart business, providing a comprehensive view of its financial health.
  • Appendix: Supplementary materials, such as charts, graphs, and additional documentation, supporting and enhancing the information presented in the business plan.

what to include in a business plan

If you’ve never created a business plan, it can be an intimidating task. You might consider hiring a business plan specialist to create a top-notch business plan for you.

Step 5: Register Your Business

Registering your business is an absolutely crucial step — it’s the prerequisite to paying taxes, raising capital, opening a bank account, and other guideposts on the road to getting a business up and running.

Plus, registration is exciting because it makes the entire process official. Once it’s complete, you’ll have your own business!

Choose where to register your company

Your business location is important because it can affect taxes, legal requirements, and revenue. Most people will register their business in the state where they live, but if you’re planning to expand, you might consider looking elsewhere, as some states could offer real advantages when it comes to go-kart businesses.

If you’re willing to move, you could really maximize your business! Keep in mind, it’s relatively easy to transfer your business to another state.

Choose your business structure

Business entities come in several varieties, each with its pros and cons. The legal structure you choose for your go-kart business will shape your taxes, personal liability, and business registration requirements, so choose wisely.

Here are the main options:

  • Sole Proprietorship – The most common structure for small businesses makes no legal distinction between company and owner. All income goes to the owner, who’s also liable for any debts, losses, or liabilities incurred by the business. The owner pays taxes on business income on his or her personal tax return.
  • General Partnership – Similar to a sole proprietorship, but for two or more people. Again, owners keep the profits and are liable for losses. The partners pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.
  • Limited Liability Company (LLC) – Combines the characteristics of corporations with those of sole proprietorships or partnerships. Again, the owners are not personally liable for debts.
  • C Corp – Under this structure, the business is a distinct legal entity and the owner or owners are not personally liable for its debts. Owners take profits through shareholder dividends, rather than directly. The corporation pays taxes, and owners pay taxes on their dividends, which is sometimes referred to as double taxation.
  • S Corp – An S-Corporation refers to the tax classification of the business but is not a business entity. An S-Corp can be either a corporation or an LLC , which just need to elect to be an S-Corp for tax status. In an S-Corp, income is passed through directly to shareholders, who pay taxes on their share of business income on their personal tax returns.

types of business structures

We recommend that new business owners choose LLC as it offers liability protection and pass-through taxation while being simpler to form than a corporation. You can form an LLC in as little as five minutes using an online LLC formation service. They will check that your business name is available before filing, submit your articles of organization , and answer any questions you might have.

Step 6: Register for Taxes

The final step before you’re able to pay taxes is getting an Employer Identification Number , or EIN. You can file for your EIN online or by mail or fax: visit the IRS website to learn more. Keep in mind, if you’ve chosen to be a sole proprietorship you can simply use your social security number as your EIN.

Once you have your EIN, you’ll need to choose your tax year. Financially speaking, your business will operate in a calendar year (January–December) or a fiscal year, a 12-month period that can start in any month. This will determine your tax cycle, while your business structure will determine which taxes you’ll pay.

The IRS website also offers a tax-payers checklist , and taxes can be filed online.

It is important to consult an accountant or other professional to help you with your taxes to ensure you’re completing them correctly.

Step 7: Fund your Business

Securing financing is your next step and there are plenty of ways to raise capital:

  • Bank loans: This is the most common method but getting approved requires a rock-solid business plan and strong credit history.
  • SBA-guaranteed loans: The Small Business Administration can act as guarantor, helping gain that elusive bank approval via an SBA-guaranteed loan .
  • Government grants: A handful of financial assistance programs help fund entrepreneurs. Visit Grants.gov to learn which might work for you.
  • Venture capital: Venture capital investors take an ownership stake in exchange for funds, so keep in mind that you’d be sacrificing some control over your business. This is generally only available for businesses with high growth potential.
  • Angel investors: Reach out to your entire network in search of people interested in investing in early-stage startups in exchange for a stake. Established angel investors are always looking for good opportunities.
  • Friends and Family: Reach out to friends and family to provide a business loan or investment in your concept. It’s a good idea to have legal advice when doing so because SEC regulations apply.
  • Crowdfunding: Websites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo offer an increasingly popular low-risk option, in which donors fund your vision. Entrepreneurial crowdfunding sites like Fundable and WeFunder enable multiple investors to fund your business.
  • Personal: Self-fund your business via your savings or the sale of property or other assets.

Bank and SBA loans are probably the best option, other than friends and family, for funding a go-kart business. You might also try crowdfunding if you have an innovative concept. At some point, if you’re doing well and set to expand, you may be able to attract angel investors or venture capital.

types of business funding

Step 8: Apply for Licenses/Permits

Starting a go-kart business requires obtaining a number of licenses and permits from local, state, and federal governments.

Federal regulations, licenses, and permits associated with starting your business include doing business as (DBA), health licenses and permits from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ), trademarks, copyrights, patents, and other intellectual properties, as well as industry-specific licenses and permits.

You may also need state-level and local county or city-based licenses and permits. The license requirements and how to obtain them vary, so check the websites of your state, city, and county governments or contact the appropriate person to learn more.

You could also check this SBA guide for your state’s requirements, but we recommend using MyCorporation’s Business License Compliance Package . They will research the exact forms you need for your business and state and provide them to ensure you’re fully compliant.

This is not a step to be taken lightly, as failing to comply with legal requirements can result in hefty penalties.

If you feel overwhelmed by this step or don’t know how to begin, it might be a good idea to hire a professional to help you check all the legal boxes.

Step 9: Open a Business Bank Account

Before you start making money, you’ll need a place to keep it, and that requires opening a bank account .

Keeping your business finances separate from your personal account makes it easy to file taxes and track your company’s income, so it’s worth doing even if you’re running your ____ business as a sole proprietorship. Opening a business bank account is quite simple, and similar to opening a personal one. Most major banks offer accounts tailored for businesses — just inquire at your preferred bank to learn about their rates and features.

Banks vary in terms of offerings, so it’s a good idea to examine your options and select the best plan for you. Once you choose your bank, bring in your EIN (or Social Security Number if you decide on a sole proprietorship), articles of incorporation, and other legal documents and open your new account.

Step 10: Get Business Insurance

Business insurance is an area that often gets overlooked yet it can be vital to your success as an entrepreneur. Insurance protects you from unexpected events that can have a devastating impact on your business.

Here are some types of insurance to consider:

  • General liability: The most comprehensive type of insurance, acting as a catch-all for many business elements that require coverage. If you get just one kind of insurance, this is it. It even protects against bodily injury and property damage.
  • Business Property: Provides coverage for your equipment and supplies.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance: Covers the cost of replacing or repairing equipment that has broken due to mechanical issues.
  • Worker’s compensation: Provides compensation to employees injured on the job.
  • Property: Covers your physical space, whether it is a cart, storefront, or office.
  • Commercial auto: Protection for your company-owned vehicle.
  • Professional liability: Protects against claims from a client who says they suffered a loss due to an error or omission in your work.
  • Business owner’s policy (BOP): This is an insurance plan that acts as an all-in-one insurance policy, a combination of the above insurance types.

types of business insurance

Step 11: Prepare to Launch

As opening day nears, prepare for launch by reviewing and improving some key elements of your business.

Essential software and tools

Being an entrepreneur often means wearing many hats, from marketing to sales to accounting, which can be overwhelming. Fortunately, many websites and digital tools are available to help simplify many business tasks.

You may want to use industry-specific software, such as Clubspeed , RaceFacer , or kartingmanager , to manage your bookings, events, invoicing, and payments.

  • Popular web-based accounting programs for smaller businesses include Quickbooks , Freshbooks , and Xero .
  • If you’re unfamiliar with basic accounting, you may want to hire a professional, especially as you begin. The consequences for filing incorrect tax documents can be harsh, so accuracy is crucial.

Develop your website

Website development is crucial because your site is your online presence and needs to convince prospective clients of your expertise and professionalism.

You can create your own website using website builders . This route is very affordable, but figuring out how to build a website can be time-consuming. If you lack tech-savvy, you can hire a web designer or developer to create a custom website for your business.

They are unlikely to find your website, however, unless you follow Search Engine Optimization ( SEO ) practices. These are steps that help pages rank higher in the results of top search engines like Google.

For your go-kart business, the marketing strategy should focus on showcasing the thrill and fun of go-karting, the safety and quality of your karts and tracks, and any unique experiences or services you offer, like group events, leagues, or advanced racing classes. Here are some powerful marketing strategies for your future business:

Kickstart Marketing

  • Professional Branding : Your branding should convey excitement, speed, and fun. This includes your logo, track signage, and promotional materials, as well as the overall aesthetic of your facility.
  • Direct Outreach : Connect with local schools, businesses, and community organizations to offer group packages or host team-building events. Participating in community events can also raise awareness of your business.

Digital Presence and Online Marketing

  • Professional Website and SEO : Develop a website that highlights the features of your track, pricing, special events, and group booking information. Use SEO best practices to rank for local searches related to go-karting, family entertainment, and group activities.
  • Social Media Engagement : Utilize platforms like Instagram and Facebook to post exciting action shots, customer reviews, and information about upcoming events or promotions.

Content Marketing and Engagement

  • Racing Blog : Share blog posts about go-kart racing tips, the latest trends in kart technology, and profiles of popular racers or events.
  • Email Newsletters : Keep your customers informed about upcoming races, league sign-ups, and special offers.
  • Video Content : Create videos showcasing the excitement of racing on your track, customer testimonials, and special events.

Experiential and In-Person Engagements

  • Racing Events and Tournaments : Organize regular racing events or tournaments to attract competitive racers and spectators, increasing foot traffic and business visibility.
  • Open Track Days : Host open track days where newcomers can try go-karting at a discounted rate, attracting a wider audience.

Collaborations and Community

  • Partnerships with Local Businesses : Partner with nearby businesses for cross-promotion. For example, collaborate with local restaurants for food deals or with entertainment centers for combo packages.
  • Community Engagement : Sponsor local sports teams or participate in community events to build brand recognition and goodwill.

Customer Relationship and Loyalty Programs

  • Membership Programs : Offer memberships that provide regular customers with discounts, special racing privileges, or points-based rewards.
  • Referral Incentives : Encourage customers to refer friends by offering them discounts or free races.

Promotions and Advertising

  • Targeted Local Advertising : Use local advertising in newspapers, radio, and online platforms to reach potential customers in your area.
  • Seasonal Promotions : Run special promotions during holidays, summer breaks, or other times when your target audience is most likely to visit.

Focus on USPs

Unique selling propositions, or USPs, are the characteristics of a product or service that set it apart from the competition. Customers today are inundated with buying options, so you’ll have a real advantage if they are able to quickly grasp how your go-kart business meets their needs or wishes. It’s wise to do all you can to ensure your USPs stand out on your website and in your marketing and promotional materials, stimulating buyer desire.

Global pizza chain Domino’s is renowned for its USP: “Hot pizza in 30 minutes or less, guaranteed.” Signature USPs for your go-kart business could be:

  • Bring the family and be race car drivers for the day!
  • Go-karts and mini golf for your next corporate event?
  • Top-notch entertainment center with go-karts, video games and more

unique selling proposition

You may not like to network or use personal connections for business gain. But your personal and professional networks likely offer considerable untapped business potential. Maybe that Facebook friend you met in college is now running a go-kart business, or a LinkedIn contact of yours is connected to dozens of potential clients. Maybe your cousin or neighbor has been working in go-karts for years and can offer invaluable insight and industry connections.

The possibilities are endless, so it’s a good idea to review your personal and professional networks and reach out to those with possible links to or interest in go-karts. You’ll probably generate new customers or find companies with which you could establish a partnership.

Step 12: Build Your Team

If you’re starting out small from a home office, you may not need any employees. But as your business grows, you will likely need workers to fill various roles. Potential positions for a go-kart business include:

  • Track Workers – customer service, safety briefings
  • Maintenance Workers – maintain and repair go-karts
  • General Manager – scheduling, accounting
  • Marketing Lead – SEO strategies, social media

At some point, you may need to hire all of these positions or simply a few, depending on the size and needs of your business. You might also hire multiple workers for a single role or a single worker for multiple roles, again depending on need.

Free-of-charge methods to recruit employees include posting ads on popular platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Jobs.com. You might also consider a premium recruitment option, such as advertising on Indeed , Glassdoor , or ZipRecruiter . Further, if you have the resources, you could consider hiring a recruitment agency to help you find talent.

Step 13: Run a Go-kart Business – Start Making Money!

If you love go-karts, you’re not alone, and you could share your hobby with others with your own go-kart business. Go-karts are coming back strong post-pandemic, and with a bit of investment and a passion to help people have fun, you could build a thriving go-kart operation, and even open tracks across the country!

You’re up to speed on the business aspects now, so it’s time to rev your entrepreneurial engine and start your new go-kart business.

  • Go-kart Business FAQs

Go-karts can be a very profitable venture. You’ll need a good location, appealing track design, and great service and you can be successful.

The amount of space required for go-karting depends on the size and layout of the track. Generally, a go-kart track can range from a few thousand square feet to several acres.

The disadvantages of go-karting include the potential for accidents or injuries if safety precautions are not followed, noise pollution, and the high cost of maintaining and operating the equipment.

Effective marketing strategies for promoting your go-kart business may include creating a strong online presence through social media platforms and a user-friendly website, offering promotions or discounts to attract new customers, partnering with local businesses or event planners, and hosting special events or tournaments.

To ensure that your employees are properly trained to operate and maintain go-kart equipment, you could provide comprehensive training programs that cover safety procedures, maintenance protocols, and customer service skills. You could also require certification or licenses for employees who operate the equipment, regularly assess employee performance and provide feedback and additional training as needed.

A go-kart business can expect to pay for kart depreciation, gas, kart maintenance, track maintenance, facility cooling, heating, and insurance. Employees will be paid between $8 and $20 per hour, depending on their roles. On a monthly basis, you can expect to pay between $200 and $400 for your warehouse’s utility needs. Heating will also be included in your ongoing expenses as your customers will like to stay warm, and large warehouses often lost heat quickly.

Who is the target market?

Because go-kart racing can be incredibly dangerous, preferred clients are those who abide by location rules and who don’t drive recklessly. Understandably, go-karting caters to younger crowds. For this reason, family units are great customer types—if only to enhance a younger rider’s safety.

Go-kart tracks are normally found within arcade complexes, so consistent memberships, on average, are more profitable than single-use riders. A go-kart track profits from ongoing bulk service packages, as they assure consistent services and a constant stream of revenue.

How does a go kart business make money?

An independent go-kart track makes money from either individual rides or monthly memberships. Again, successful tracks utilize ongoing payment “packages” to ensure visitors return. Basic go-kart tracks make money from races, but some may charge extra for site-provided safety equipment. Small amenities, like food and drinks, can make a go-kart track money, too.

If a go-kart track is part of a larger complex, it will either be treated as the part complex or as its own entity serving under the complex. If the latter is true, money is earned after the overarching complex makes revenue.

Customers can be charged, on average, about $5 per ride. Safety gear should be rented for between $5 and $10 as their use limits overall track usage. If you want to make more money, consider offering yearly memberships for between $100 and $200, or you can offer special memberships for quick-access riding. Fortunately, go-kart pricing is incredibly variable. Since you’re dealing with kart depreciation, gasoline, and maintenance as expenses, you needn’t worry too much about each kart’s value compared to its use.

How much profit can a go kart business make?

While a go-karting business can cost a lot to open, its profits can be large. LLC go-kart businesses can make between $500,000 and $700,000 yearly, if they’re smart about attracting and retaining visitors. However, it’s a good idea to join a franchise to increase service reliability. Individual facilities can spend thousands of dollars on financial and marketing advice.

How can you make your business more profitable?

Reduce the liabilities as much as possible. New go-kart businesses face a lot of difficulty, expense-wise, with insurance and property upkeep. Once your business has grown, join a franchise or become part of an entertainment complex. You could also enter the high-speed racing market niche, and attract long-term customers with unique, competitive membership plans.

STEP 2: Form a legal entity

Establishing a legal business entity such as an LLC or corporation protects you from being held personally liable if your go kart business is sued.

Form Your LLC

STEP 3: Register for taxes

You will need to register for a variety of state and federal taxes before you can open for business.

In order to register for taxes you will need to apply for an EIN. It's really easy and free!

You can acquire your EIN through the IRS website . If you would like to learn more about EINs, read our article, What is an EIN?

There are specific state taxes that might apply to your business. Learn more about state sales tax and franchise taxes in our state sales tax guides.

STEP 4: Open a business bank account & credit card

Using dedicated business banking and credit accounts is essential for personal asset protection.

When your personal and business accounts are mixed, your personal assets (your home, car, and other valuables) are at risk in the event your business is sued. In business law, this is referred to as piercing your corporate veil .

Open a business bank account

Besides being a requirement when applying for business loans, opening a business bank account:

  • Separates your personal assets from your company's assets, which is necessary for personal asset protection.
  • Makes accounting and tax filing easier.

Recommended: Read our Best Banks for Small Business review to find the best national bank or credit union.

Get a business credit card

Getting a business credit card helps you:

  • Separate personal and business expenses by putting your business' expenses all in one place.
  • Build your company's credit history , which can be useful to raise money later on.

Recommended: Apply for an easy approval business credit card from BILL and build your business credit quickly.

STEP 5: Set up business accounting

Recording your various expenses and sources of income is critical to understanding the financial performance of your business. Keeping accurate and detailed accounts also greatly simplifies your annual tax filing.

Make LLC accounting easy with our LLC Expenses Cheat Sheet.

STEP 6: Obtain necessary permits and licenses

Failure to acquire necessary permits and licenses can result in hefty fines, or even cause your business to be shut down.

State & Local Business Licensing Requirements

Certain state permits and licenses may be needed to operate a go-kart business. Learn more about licensing requirements in your state by visiting SBA’s reference to state licenses and permits .

Most businesses are required to collect sales tax on the goods or services they provide. To learn more about how sales tax will affect your business, read our article, Sales Tax for Small Businesses .

Liability Waivers

To avoid liability and potential lawsuits, Go Kart businesses should have their clients sign a release of liability. Here is an example of one such form.

Recommended: Rocket Lawyer makes it easy to create a professional release of liability form for your Go Kart business when you sign up for their premium membership. For $39.95 per month, members receive access to hundreds of legal agreements and on call attorneys to get complimentary legal advice.

Certificate of Occupancy

A go-kart business can be run out of a large storefront or large outdoor space. Businesses operating out of a physical location typically require a Certificate of Occupancy  (CO).  A CO confirms that all building codes, zoning laws and government regulations have been met.

  • If you plan to lease a space :
  • It is generally the landlord’s responsibility to obtain a CO.
  • Before leasing, confirm that your landlord has or can obtain a valid CO that is applicable to a go-kart business.
  • After a major renovation, a new CO often needs to be issued. If your place of business will be renovated before opening,  it is recommended  to include language in your lease agreement stating that lease payments will not commence until a valid CO is issued.
  • If you plan to purchase or build a space :
  • You will be responsible for obtaining a valid CO from a local government authority.
  • Review all building codes and zoning requirements for you business’ location to ensure your go-kart business will be in compliance and able to obtain a CO

STEP 7: Get business insurance

Just as with licenses and permits, your business needs insurance in order to operate safely and lawfully. Business Insurance protects your company’s financial wellbeing in the event of a covered loss.

There are several types of insurance policies created for different types of businesses with different risks. If you’re unsure of the types of risks that your business may face, begin with General Liability Insurance . This is the most common coverage that small businesses need, so it’s a great place to start for your business.

Another notable insurance policy that many businesses need is Workers’ Compensation Insurance . If your business will have employees, it’s a good chance that your state will require you to carry Workers' Compensation Coverage.

FInd out what types of insurance your Go Kart Business needs and how much it will cost you by reading our guide Business Insurance for Go Kart Business.

STEP 8: Define your brand

Your brand is what your company stands for, as well as how your business is perceived by the public. A strong brand will help your business stand out from competitors.

If you aren't feeling confident about designing your small business logo, then check out our Design Guides for Beginners , we'll give you helpful tips and advice for creating the best unique logo for your business.

Recommended : Get a logo using Truic's free logo Generator no email or sign up required, or use a Premium Logo Maker .

If you already have a logo, you can also add it to a QR code with our Free QR Code Generator . Choose from 13 QR code types to create a code for your business cards and publications, or to help spread awareness for your new website.

How to promote & market a go kart business

You should promote your business through nearby fun complexes, arcades, and outdoor entertainment complexes. Promotion via sports complexes, gyms, basketball courts, baseball fields, and similar areas is a good idea. Internet promotion is a solid marketing plan, though your business’s most profitable clients will be found in similar areas—engaging outdoor activities, extreme sports or exercise. The most cost effective form of advertising will be the creation and maintenance of a social media page which showcases pictures of your business, a list of activities you offer, and any special events/promotions that are presently occurring.

How to keep customers coming back

Record your races, promote on YouTube, and offer Facebook membership exclusives. Go-kart tracks, again, thrive on return visits. If you can offer yearly memberships, discounts, holiday deals, and birthday racing packages, you’ll become a preferred provider in your area. Beware of opening a large track, however, as large tracks have niche audiences. While these audiences are often willing to pay hundreds of dollars for high-speed racing, they generally aren’t sustainable buyers.

STEP 9: Create your business website

After defining your brand and creating your logo the next step is to create a website for your business .

While creating a website is an essential step, some may fear that it’s out of their reach because they don’t have any website-building experience. While this may have been a reasonable fear back in 2015, web technology has seen huge advancements in the past few years that makes the lives of small business owners much simpler.

Here are the main reasons why you shouldn’t delay building your website:

  • All legitimate businesses have websites - full stop. The size or industry of your business does not matter when it comes to getting your business online.
  • Social media accounts like Facebook pages or LinkedIn business profiles are not a replacement for a business website that you own.
  • Website builder tools like the GoDaddy Website Builder have made creating a basic website extremely simple. You don’t need to hire a web developer or designer to create a website that you can be proud of.

Recommended : Get started today using our recommended website builder or check out our review of the Best Website Builders .

Other popular website builders are: WordPress , WIX , Weebly , Squarespace , and Shopify .

STEP 10: Set up your business phone system

Getting a phone set up for your business is one of the best ways to help keep your personal life and business life separate and private. That’s not the only benefit; it also helps you make your business more automated, gives your business legitimacy, and makes it easier for potential customers to find and contact you.

What happens during a typical day at a go kart business?

Go-kart business owners handle insurance plans, kart maintenance, track timing systems, part sourcing, safety gear sourcing, barrier setup, and day-to-day racing governance. Looking through an administrative lens, successful go-kart business owners handle finances, marketing, management, and location maintenance. Successful tracks are run by personnel who are experienced with driver safety, since it is important to monitor every race.

What are some skills and experiences that will help you build a successful go kart business?

Firstly, a firm understanding of driver safety, insurance, and premises maintenance is important. Go-karting is incredibly dangerous, and many go-kart businesses must stand strong against legal scrutiny for their sake and for the sake of their customers.

Go-kart business owners also need to understand the fundamentals of motor vehicle management, safe driving procedures, mechanics, racing procedures, warehouse operation, and general business planning. Go-kart racing is a profitable opportunity, but it fails to be sustainable if it isn’t approached by a responsible someone with an entrepreneurial mindset.

What is the growth potential for a go kart business?

Since most go-kart businesses operate as contractor entities, many simply serve larger complexes. In these cases, a go-kart business’s growth potential will eventually be tied to the complex’s. Larger complexes absorb many go-kart businesses, too. This mostly happens because individual go-kart businesses struggle to compete against larger entertainment complexes.

As an individual entity, however, a go-kart business can become an area’s preferred provider. Go-kart businesses are far and few between, making them a unique service in the market. If a go-kart business manages to stay independent, it can benefit from a healthy environment of returning customers. However, it is quite difficult to become a multi-state go-kart racing provider.

What are some insider tips for jump starting a go kart business?

At the beginning, a go-kart track shouldn’t exist as a sole proprietorship or a partnership. It should exist as a limited liability corporation (LLC) to be protected against accident and risk claims. Jump-starting a go-kart business isn’t necessarily difficult if you have the capital, but liability coverage must be incredibly sustainable. Every jurisdiction has specific laws regarding LLC coverage.

As for jump-starting in a local market, pricing matters. Your go-kart business should price competitively, pricing family races at about $5.

How and when to build a team

You’ll need a team of at least five before opening day. Your workers will include technicians, track operators, safety instructors, and payment processors. Once your go-kart track is sustainable, consider increasing your team to about 10. Go-kart tracks tend to become popular quickly, if they offer a solid pricing incentive, so scaling can be rapid, difficult, and dangerous.

The go kart industry is on the rise. With global earnings of $161.17 in 2022 and a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.3%, now is a great time to get involved. The market could reach $195.83 by 2028 if it continues on this trajectory.

outdoor go kart business plan

Starting a go kart company can be lucrative, but also requires significant upfront investment and planning. From sourcing equipment and securing a location, to hiring staff and attracting customers – it’s no simple Sunday drive.

This guide offers insight into how to start a go kart business. Topics include go kart business insurance, market research, opening a business bank account, customer focus, marketing, registering an EIN, and more. Here’s everything you need to know to start a karting business.

1. Conduct Go Kart Market Research

Market research is invaluable to any new go kart business. Market research offers insight into your target market, service trends, competitors, and more. As you research, make sure you use primary and secondary research. Primary is research you conduct yourself and secondary is research conducted by a third party.

Some of the details you’ll learn as you research opening a go kart business includes:

  • The US accounts for the largest share of the global market.
  • Key opportunities exist in tourist locations and urban areas where family entertainment venues can provide go karting alongside other activities.
  • While the upfront investment for setting up a go kart business can be $200k-$500k, the relatively short payback period of 2-3 years makes it financially attractive.
  • Profits per kart can range from $30k-$60k depending on utilization rates.
  • A prime go kart location is one with high foot traffic and proximity to family attractions.
  • Tourist hot spots are ideal, but the challenge lies in seasonality.
  • Strategically placing near hotels and restaurants helps draw steady customers.
  • Staffing requires management, track monitors, maintenance crew, ticketing, and sales associates.
  • Effective social media marketing and online booking can help acquire customers. Events and partnerships with local businesses also support promotion.
  • Safety is paramount, and go kart sites must secure adequate insurance policies.
  • Obtaining required permits and undergoing regular inspections ensures compliance with legal regulations.

With strategic planning around location, operations, marketing, and risk management, go-karting presents an attractive business opportunity. The demand drivers and growth trends point to a sizable market ready for experienced entrepreneurs to tap.

2. Analyze the Competition

When starting a go kart business, it’s crucial to analyze your local competition. This includes assessing brick-and-mortar go kart venues within a 20-mile radius.

Some ways to get to know about other successful go kart business owners in your area include:

  • Track their location, pricing, track types/sizes, and unique offerings like leagues or advanced karts.
  • Visit incognito to evaluate the customer experience. This helps identify their strengths and weaknesses.
  • Review online ratings and reviews for these establishments on Google, Facebook, and Yelp.
  • Look for customer feedback on safety, staff, maintenance, and overall satisfaction.
  • Search online directory listings like YellowPages to uncover all go-kart options in the area. Enter keywords like “go kart racing” and scout each result.
  • Study their website and social media presence.
  • Check engagement on recent posts and reviews. See if they offer online booking or packages.
  • Set up Google Alerts for the brand names of competitive go kart businesses to monitor news coverage and promotional activities.
  • Evaluate the SEO health of their website by looking at Google search rankings.
  • Input local keywords like “go kart racing Atlanta” to see where they place.
  • Use tools like SEMrush to assess their organic traffic sources.
  • Regularly analyze competitor market share on review sites like Yelp.
  • Keep up with industry news through associations like the International Kart Federation.
  • Study trends impacting go kart operations, safety regulations, and participation.

Continuous competitive analysis, both online and off, ensure your go kart business can identify opportunities to differentiate.

3. Costs to Start a Go Kart Business

When launching a go-kart company, there are considerable upfront investments to get the venue operational.

Start-up Costs

  • Location – Purchasing or leasing land for the track can range from $ 200,000 to $1 million depending on acreage, location, and whether it’s developed land.
  • Track Build – Constructing the track with professional-grade asphalt or concrete will cost around $300,000 for a basic 13-acre circuit.
  • Karts – An initial fleet of 10-20 karts will likely run $150,000-$300,000. Advanced adult karts cost $5,000-$8,000 each.
  • Insurance – Businesses need liability insurance starting around $4,000/year for minimal coverage. Higher policy limits of $3-$5 million can cost up to $30,000/year.
  • Licensing & Legal – Obtaining business licenses, permits and corporation formation averages $2,000-$5,000. Lawyers may also be needed for contracts.
  • Staff – Managers earn approximately $45,000/year. Track monitors and maintenance crew average $15/hour. Plan for a team of 10-15.
  • Equipment – An initial stock of safety gear, tools, POS systems, and maintenance items will run $15,000-$20,000.
  • Marketing – Website, signage, and initial promotions average $7,000-$10,000 to build local awareness.

In total, launching a go-kart venue requires a minimum of $500,000-$750,000 to cover these start-up costs. High-end builds exceed $2 million.

Ongoing Costs

  • Rent/Mortgage – If leasing land, budget $5,000-$15,000. Mortgage payments can be $3,000-$8,000.
  • Staff Payroll – With a team of 12 at average wages of $15/hour, payroll is approximately $35,000 monthly.
  • Utilities – Expect electric bills of $2,000-$4,000 monthly depending on lighting needs and other power uses.
  • Equipment Maintenance – Average around $4,000/month for kart parts and repairs, replacement safety gear, and general upkeep.
  • Insurance – Monthly premiums are usually $1,500-$2,500 if paid annually.
  • Marketing – Budget $2,000-$3,000 monthly for PPC ads, social media spending, promotions and partnerships.
  • Accounting & Legal Fees – Plan for $300-$500 monthly.

In total, monthly recurring costs typically range from $20,000-$40,000. Larger venues with more staff and equipment maintenance will be higher. Careful financial planning and cost control are key to managing cash flow for a go kart business.

4. Form a Legal Business Entity

When starting a go kart business, choosing the right legal structure is critical. The four main options each have pros and cons to weigh:

Sole Proprietorship

A sole proprietorship is the simplest and most affordable, with no formal business registration needed. However, the owner is personally liable for all debts and legal claims, which is very risky for go kart businesses given the high chance of injury lawsuits.

Partnership

Partnerships allow multiple owners to share control and liability. But similar to sole proprietors, partners are not shielded if the business is sued. Any disagreements between partners can also jeopardize operations.

Corporation

A corporation provides limited liability protection for shareholders. However, corporations require extensive record keeping, annual meetings, and double taxation on profits. The formality makes them better suited for large companies.

Limited Liability Company (LLC)

For most go kart businesses, an LLC (limited liability company) offers the best of all worlds. LLCs limit the financial liability of owners while allowing pass-through taxation like a partnership or sole proprietorship. An LLC also imposes less paperwork than a corporation.

5. Register Your Business For Taxes

One key legal step for any go kart business is obtaining an Employer Identification Number, or EIN, from the IRS.

An EIN is essentially the business equivalent of a social security number – it identifies your business for tax and reporting purposes. An EIN is mandatory if your go kart company will have employees or operates as a corporation/LLC.

Applying for an EIN is free and can be done online via the IRS website in just minutes:

The online EIN application will ask for basic information about your go kart business including name, address, and ownership structure. No sensitive data is required. At the end, you’ll be provided an EIN confirmation letter with your new number to use when filing taxes and opening business bank accounts.

In addition to a federal EIN, you must also register with your state revenue or taxation department for sales tax collection purposes. This entails submitting an application and a fee, which varies by state from $10-$150.

Sales tax registration enables your go kart company to legally collect and remit sales tax on ticket purchases. You will be provided a Sales & Use Tax Permit Number for charging sales tax at your point-of-sale system. Failing to collect sales tax can lead to government penalties.

Most states allow online registration for sales tax permits. Some may require submitting additional business license applications. Be sure to research the specific requirements for your state.

6. Setup Your Accounting

Operating a go kart venue requires meticulous financial tracking and accounting to stay profitable and compliant. Investing in tools like software and an accountant from the start is highly recommended.

Accounting Software

Using accounting software like QuickBooks streamlines recording income and expenses. Features like bank feed imports and invoice automation save tons of time on bookkeeping tasks. QuickBooks seamlessly tracks sales, payroll, and taxes and generates financial reports. This gives go kart owners real-time insight into the health of their business.

Hire an Accountant

While the software does the heavy lifting, partnering with an accountant is still advised. A qualified accountant provides oversight to ensure your books are audit-ready. They can manage tasks like monthly reconciliations, sales tax filings, and advising on tax deductions. Come tax season, an accountant will handle completing and submitting all required business returns.

Open a Business Bank Account

For banking, go kart businesses should always maintain a dedicated business checking account separate from personal finances. This makes tracking income and expenses much simpler. It also provides necessary documentation if audited. Depositing business earnings into a personal account can spawn accounting headaches.

Apply for a Business Credit Card

Applying for a small business credit card also simplifies accounting. Business cards build credit history and offer protections not provided by personal cards. Approved limits are based on time in business and annual revenue, not personal credit scores. Having a dedicated card exclusively for go kart operating expenses streamlines financial organization.

7. Obtain Licenses and Permits

Before welcoming your first customers, any go kart operation must obtain all required state and local licenses. Find federal license requirements through the U.S. Small Business Association . The SBA local search tool offers details on state requirements.

One essential license is a commercial occupancy permit for the physical go kart facility. This involves having building inspectors review your venue to ensure it meets code standards for electrical, plumbing, accessibility, and more based on its occupancy purpose.

Go kart businesses will also need to apply for relevant local business licenses based on activities offered onsite. For example, if you operate a snack bar, you may need both a restaurant permit and food handler certifications. Having arcade games requires an amusement center license. Check with your city clerk on all applicable licenses and education mandates for onsite offerings.

Liability insurance is another compulsory requirement for go kart tracks to protect customers with high-risk rides. Most states enforce minimum policy limits starting around $500,000. Be sure to work with an insurer familiar with the go kart industry to find adequate coverage for accidents and injuries.

If utilizing gas-powered karts, federal EPA regulations require emission control permits and testing to prevent excess air pollution. Electric karts bypass this mandate. Always research what’s required based on your equipment.

Inspections from the fire department, building department, and health department are also standard. Review protocols for emergency bathroom accessibility, equipment maintenance, and ride safety processes. Document all policies in a safety manual.

8. Get Business Insurance

Given the high risks inherent in operating go karts, securing adequate business insurance is crucial. Policies help hedge against scenarios that could otherwise devastate your company.

Without coverage, just one major lawsuit from an injured customer could bankrupt your business. The same goes for an accident that causes property damage or equipment theft. Lawsuits and legal fees mount quickly without insurance buffers.

Specific examples of catastrophic scenarios without coverage:

  • A damaged kart malfunctions and crashes into a barrier, breaking a rider’s spine. Medical bills exceed $500,000.
  • An electrical fire sparked by outdated wiring destroys your venue overnight. Rebuilding costs top $2 million.
  • A disgruntled former employee sneaks in overnight and steals 12 karts worth $60,000 total.

To properly insure a go kart business, start by researching industry-specific brokers like K&K Insurance. They offer tailored policies covering:

  • Liability – Protects against injury lawsuits, property damage, and more. Minimum $1 million recommended.
  • Business Property – Covers buildings, equipment, inventory, and renovations for disasters.
  • Business Interruption – Provides income if forced to temporarily close after an incident.
  • Commercial Crime – Safeguards against employee theft and fraud.

When applying, you’ll need to provide a detailed business plan, financial records, facility details, and more. Expect monthly premiums from $2,000-$5,000 or more depending on your policy limits. This major investment is non-negotiable for go kart businesses given the risks.

9. Create an Office Space

While go kart venues focus on outdoor track operations, securing office space provides a centralized hub for admin work. An office allows owners and managers to handle crucial business functions in a professional environment.

Home Office

Working from home can offer a convenient and affordable option early on. Home offices maximize flexibility and require no commuting. However, blurring home and work boundaries can hurt productivity over time. Plus homes aren’t designed for constant employees or client meetings. Expect costs of $200-$500 for basic furniture and supplies.

Coworking Office

Coworking spaces like WeWork provide a happy medium between home and traditional offices. Coworking spaces offer flexible month-to-month memberships for $300-$800 monthly. This grants access to fully equipped offices with business amenities like meeting rooms, printers, WiFi, and more.

Retail Office

Opening a small retail office at the go kart venue itself brings management onsite. This allows close supervision of daily operations. Onsite offices can utilize unused space at the track. Budget $2,000-$5,000 for basic build-outs. The downside is a distraction from customers and noise.

Commercial Office

Leasing a private commercial office space offers the most professional setting for managers and sales teams. While pricier with rents from $1,000-$2,500 monthly, traditional office spaces project legitimacy with clients. Private offices also provide room for support staff. The location should balance commute convenience with proximity to your track.

Ultimately the right office solution depends on budget constraints and the scale of administrative needs. Just be sure the space allows focus for critical business functions away from daily track activities.

10. Source Your Equipment

Launching a go kart venue requires acquiring an extensive fleet of karts, safety gear, and maintenance equipment. Savvy entrepreneurs have options when acquiring these necessary materials:

Purchasing new karts from leading manufacturers like Sodikart , OTL , and BirelArt provides the latest designs and the longest lifespan. However, expect to invest $2,500-$8,000 per kart. Shopping clearance models at the end of each racing season can offer savings. Attending industry trade shows also helps source promotional pricing.

Buying used karts is more affordable, with race-ready models available for around $1,000-$3,000 on sites like RacingJunk . Private sellers on Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace also list karts. Inspect secondhand karts meticulously and ask for maintenance records to confirm quality.

Many tracks rent their karts rather than taking on ownership. This transfers upkeep responsibilities to the rental company. Kart rental outfits like Victory Lanes offer flexible per-day pricing. Just be sure to account for delivery fees and security deposits.

Leasing through a financing provider is another alternative to owning karts. Programs from companies like STO Financial spread acquisition costs over 3-5 years. This preserves capital for other startup needs. However, interest charges add 10-20% typically.

11. Establish Your Brand Assets

Creating a strong brand identity is crucial for go kart businesses to stand out and be remembered. Thoughtfully developing brand assets establishes trust and recognition with local customers.

Get a Business Phone Number

Securing a professional business phone number via a service like RingCentral projects legitimacy to callers. Toll-free and local number options are available starting at $30/month. Choose a number that’s easy to remember.

Design a Logo

Designing an iconic logo and visual identity helps customers recognize your brand anywhere. Logos like your signage, website, uniforms, etc. should share cohesive qualities. Bold, vibrant graphics suit the high-octane nature of go karts. Use a logo maker like Looka to explore affordable options.

Print Business Cards

Business cards offer convenient marketing that employees can distribute anywhere. Cards should display your logo, tagline, contacts, social media, and more. Vistaprint provides affordable, high-quality card printing starting around $10 for 500.

Buy a Domain Name

Secure a branded domain name that’s easy to remember. Short, keyword-driven names like GoKartRaceway.com optimize for searches. Use Namecheap for affordable registration starting at around $12 annually.

Build a Website

Building a polished website establishes your brand online. Users can book tickets, view safety information, and more through an intuitive, mobile-friendly site. Use a service like Wix for DIY site building or hire a skilled web developer via Fiverr .

12. Join Associations and Groups

Joining relevant local groups and associations provides invaluable connections when starting a go kart venue. Surrounding yourself with fellow industry experts helps trade insights and elevate your success.

Local Associations

Local go karting associations like the Georgia Karting Association offer conferences, discounts, and peer mentorship. Veteran members guide track setup, maintenance, marketing, and more. Associations also lobby for favorable local regulations. Consider joining chapters in your state like the Florida Karting Association .

Local Meetups

Attending meetups and trade shows is ideal for networking with others firsthand. Use sites like Meetup to find regular local events for motorsports enthusiasts and small business owners. Chat up fellow go kart track owners about what works for winning customers. Approach vendors about equipment deals.

Facebook Groups

Facebook groups provide online communities to tap into. The East Coast Kart Racing and Racing go kart parts connect thousands of operators worldwide. Post questions to access decades of collective wisdom. Groups like Florida Kart Racing also provide localized advice.

13. How to Market a Go Kart Business

Implementing an ongoing marketing strategy is essential for go kart businesses to attract customers and stand out locally. A multifaceted approach combining digital and traditional tactics is ideal.

Personal Networking

Start by leveraging your network and existing customer base. Satisfied patrons who promote your venue to friends and social media followers via word-of-mouth and online reviews are invaluable. Consider offering a promotional incentive, like a free race, for referrals.

Digital Marketing

For digital marketing:

  • Run Google and Facebook ads targeting local families, youth groups, and motorsport fans. Geotargeting reaches those nearby.
  • Create social media business pages on Facebook and Instagram to highlight events, share photos/videos, and engage followers.
  • Start a YouTube channel with virtual track tours, safety overviews, and customer testimonials.
  • Launch an email newsletter with promotions, events, and company updates to build an audience.
  • Blog about go-kart racing tips, mechanics, the latest gear, etc. to establish expertise.

Traditional Marketing

For traditional marketing:

  • Distribute flyers and coupons at local schools, youth centers, tourist spots, and racing events.
  • Take out ads in local newspapers and magazines geared towards families and motorsports.
  • Send direct mail promotions to households within a 10-mile radius. Target larger populations.
  • Arrange for radio commercials on stations popular with your target demographics.
  • Explore billboard placement alongside busy roads and highways near your venue.

A strategic mix of digital and traditional marketing paired with customer outreach expands your reach and brand presence locally. Monitor results closely to double down on tactics proving most effective.

14. Focus on the Customer

Providing exceptional customer service is crucial for go kart businesses to cultivate loyalty and word-of-mouth referrals. Given the experiential nature of the product, customer satisfaction hinges on every interaction.

Some ways to improve customer focus in your own go kart business include:

  • Staff should be trained to deliver prompt, friendly assistance to all patrons.
  • A quick check-in at the start builds rapport.
  • During the experience, monitor rides to ensure safety and enjoyment.
  • Afterward, ask for feedback and invite sharing on social media.
  • Follow up with thank you emails recapping the visit.
  • Well-executed special occasions like birthdays, corporate events, and youth group outings are prime opportunities to wow customers.
  • Get creative with themed decor, photo booths, and custom cakes to create lasting memories they’ll eagerly recommend.
  • Quickly resolving any issues that arise also prevents bad sentiment.
  • Offer complimentary return visits if customers have lackluster experiences.
  • Respond promptly to negative reviews with apologies and rectification.

1) Project location: This refers to the study of the place where the project is intended to be carried out. There are several factors that will determine a prime location such as:

  • City or city center location
  • Transportation availability
  • Foot traffic
  • Size of the premises
  • Rent/cost of acquiring the premises

2) Feasibility, sustainability and study of the location: After choosing the perfect place, whether it is purchased or leased, it is essential to carry out a study of the demographics and economy within the area. This will help you get an idea of how many customers could visit and/or purchase the products and services that will be offered.

Feasibility Study of Location

3) Complete project design : This step carries vital importance since it requires the complete study of the project. It involves the following:

  • Track design according to the space and layout of the business.
  • Design of secondary areas such as the cafeteria, office, point of sale, workshop, gift shop, complementary activities, etc.
  • Choice of all equipment and accessories.
  • Obtaining 3 rd party quotes
  • Licensing and documentation

For legal terms , we consider it appropriate to put yourself in the hands of professionals such as lawyers or consulting firms . The legal steps to follow are:

  • Creating a company
  • Obtaining licenses, permits and insurance both on site and in operation
  • Have commitment sheets (waivers) that customers must sign prior to racing

Once this stage of the project is completed, it will be possible to have a much more realistic idea of the appearance of the business and the costs of construction and operation. In addition, it will be possible to estimate potential business income .

At this stage you may search for potential investors and/or financial institutions to apply for project funding if necessary.

If the person who carries out this project is not familiar with the karting sector, it is essential they seek advice and do not cut corners to save on budget . By making this mistake not only you risk the safety of the site, but also hinder the return of investment and reduce the maximum income potential. Contact us to obtain a project according to your needs that ensures its full potential and success.

  • Paving the track
  • Installation of all components (protective barriers, modular structures, pit lane, race control, workshop, etc.)
  • Paint and other decorative aspects
  • Installation of music equipment, lights, etc.

  • General Manager
  • Director of Marketing and Social Media
  • Track managers
  • Track marshals’

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is the approximate cost to carry out an ideal go karting business project from scratch?

The approximate cost is something that is determined by the type of go kart project you seek. A big project will require more protective barrier, more karts, more staff, etc. Therefore, this would convert into a higher running cost. On average, a karting project featuring the latest technological advances, can start as low as $800,000 and reach up to $2M.

  • What items and/or accessories should you invest in for a go kart business?

The most important elements of a successful go kart track are the go karts themselves, followed by the track layout and design. For this reason, it is recommended to research before choosing a reputable brand that will deliver a product that exceeds your expectations and will require minimum maintenance in the long run. A fun track with sharp turns and straightaways to build speed will always keep a customer engaged.

  • How long would it take to obtain ROI for a go kart track business?

Based on experience we know that an investment to create a karting center is not relatively low. However, the ROI is remarkably high. A project that has invested over $1,500,000 could receive the ROI as early as 1-2 years.

  • What kind of pavement is ideal for a go kart track; asphalt or polished concrete? What about the special paint?

As a rule of thumb, the ideal pavement to use on a go kart track is ASPHALT. We have a special formula specially designed for the use on go karting tracks that will give the best grip thus increasing its safety. Choosing the wrong pavement can lead to serious problems that can affect the operation, increase maintenance costs, and hurt the income projection.

We understand that sometimes it is not possible to apply asphalt due to the location of the go kart track project (shopping centers or premises at different levels) where the machines that work with asphalt do not have access. In this case it is important to be cautious when choosing the asphalt substitute .

On the other hand, there are special resin paints that are becoming more popular and guarantee a good grip for the go karting activity. Furthermore, we can also provide information on applying polished concrete properly to create an ideal grip on the track.

  • Is it necessary to have previous experience to start a go kart business?

The short answer is NO . It is true that all the prior knowledge always helps, although with our advice and training, anyone can be qualified to run a go kart track business.

  • What is the minimum area needed to develop a go kart track?

It all depends on the type of project being carried out to get an idea of the space that is needed. However, to carry out a profitable go karting project it is recommended to be somewhere in between 2,500 m2 – 5,000 m2 . The space may be lower if there is extra height where second track levels can be implemented therefore adding more length and optimizing the space to its full potential.

  • What is the ideal go kart track length?

This question is often confusing. Some believe the greater the distance the greater the profitability of the project. This is totally false. A track must be dynamic to get the drivers to repeat. The length will not affect the perception of the drivers.

For indoor tracks , it is suggested they should have a length between 300m (28 seconds/lap) and up to 500m (48 seconds/lap.)

For outdoor tracks , it is ideal to have a greater size (both wide and long) and may reach up to 1000m or 1200m lineal (70-100 seconds per lap.)

  • How many go karts should I run per race? And how many go karts should I purchase?

The number of karts that should run per lap and total amount to own are determined by the design, size, and layout of the track . A popular choice for a lot of indoor tracks is usually 24 electric adult karts . This setup allows you to keep 12 units charging while 12 units are racing, maintaining the battery levels always fully charged guarantees a seamless operation.

  • How long does it take to complete a go kart track project?

After the design step, you can usually estimate the completion time of the project accurately. The time usually ranges between 3 to 5 months depending on the size, complexity of the project and location.

How to Start a Go-Kart Business

Main Sections In This Post Steps To Starting A Go-Kart Business Points to Consider Knowledge Is Power Featured Video

Starting your own Go-Kart business can be an exciting venture combining the thrill of racing and running your own business.

It requires careful planning – including finding a suitable location, acquiring go-karts, setting up safety measures, obtaining necessary permits, and crafting a strong marketing strategy.

We will examine the steps, highlight important considerations, and provide many current and future references. With proper guidance and resources, your go-kart business can become a reality.

So, buckle up, and let’s get started with the steps!

Steps to Starting a Go-Kart Business

1. ensure you’re ready to run a business.

Finding out if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur is the first step in starting your own business. Not everyone should pursue entrepreneurship. While you might enjoy driving and working on go-karts, you might not be the best candidate to manage a go-kart operation.

More information can be found in the article below.

  • Business Startup Considerations

2. Research

Business research.

The more you know about the go-kart industry, the easier it will be for you to run a successful business.

With the link below, you can get inside information from people who work in the industry, get in touch with them, and learn more about how a go-karting business works.

Target Market

Knowing your target market allows you to tailor your products and services to appeal to your customers.

To create effective advertising campaigns, you need to know what your target audience wants.

For more, see,  How To Understand Your Target Market .

3. Setup Considerations

You must have a vision for your go-kart business. You can develop one by answering the questions below.

It’s acceptable for your perspective to change as you conduct research. Start with one vision as a starting point and alter it as necessary.

Questions for you to answer:

  • Do you intend on one location or multiple ones?
  • Will you operate full or part-time?
  • Will you do all the work or hire a crew for operations and management?
  • Do you want an indoor or outdoor setup?
  • Are you considering electric or gas-powered carts?
  • Will you offer low or high-speed karts or both?
  • Is there anything  original about your business  for a competitive edge?

Track Considerations

One of the main considerations for a go-kart business is the track. There are many types of go-kart businesses out there.

You’ll see indoor and outdoor tracks offering gas-powered and electric-powered karts.

Some are theme-based, for example, arcade-like themes with food and apparel. I saw one go-kart business that offers a restaurant and live music.

Indoor VS an Outdoor Operation

Are you considering having an indoor or outdoor track or possibly both? You may want to consider electric karts due to emissions with indoor tracks. Currently, the top speed of electric karts is 50 mph, while the top speed of gas karts is 160 mph.

An outdoor track is more suitable if you plan on high-speed karts. There is much more room for bends and straightaways that allow you to reach high speeds.

You can also consider two tracks—an inside track for lower speed and bad weather days and a high-performance track for outside racing.

Safety is a serious part of your operation with this type of business.

I would perform daily safety checks for the establishment, the track, and the karts. It’s essential to document your safety checks every day.

When you have the highest regard for safety, you protect those that come to your business. As a business owner, you must keep your customers and employees safe. If an accident occurs and you are found negligent, there will be harsh consequences. Therefore, you’re better off being overly protective.

4. Business Location Selection

There is a strong correlation between location and success. A bad location will hurt your chances of success, whereas a good one will help you achieve your goals.

If there’s no demand for karting, there’s no use in opening a go-kart track in that area. If you live in a small town, there may not be enough interest to run a successful karting business.

If there are many tracks in your area, it might be hard to establish a new go-kart business. Instead, you’ll need to bring something new to the market, like better karts, a more modern track, a better experience, etc.

For more, see  Choosing The Best Location for Your Business.

5. Register Your Business Name

Your company name should be catchy, easy to pronounce, memorable, and available for registration. Your website’s domain name must also be the same as the name of your business.

6. Business Registering

The legal operation of your business requires the proper business structure, permits, and registration.

Your company’s structure is determined by several factors, including its financial status and size.

You must check with your local municipality for the regulations and permits necessary to run this business.

Naturally, there are different regulations when running an indoor or outdoor track.

With an outdoor track, you have the noise barriers that come into play, especially for high-performance karts that can reach speeds of 160 MPH.

Permits and Issues to Consider

A new go-kart business requires several permits and licenses to ensure your operations are legal and compliant with local, state, and national regulations. The exact requirements can vary depending on your location, but here’s a general list of permits and licenses you may need:

  • Business License : This is a basic requirement for any business, giving you the legal right to operate within a particular area.
  • Land Use Permits : Depending on where you plan to construct the go-kart track, you may need permission from local zoning boards or planning commissions.
  • Building Permits : Building permits are usually required if you are constructing new buildings or significantly altering existing ones.
  • Health and Safety Permits : Go-kart tracks often need to meet specific health and safety standards. This may require inspections and permits from the fire department, health department, or other related agencies.
  • Environmental Permits : If your go-kart operation involves significant land disturbance, emissions, or potential for pollution, you may need environmental permits.
  • Food and Beverage License : If you plan to sell food and drinks at your facility, you must obtain the appropriate permits and pass any necessary inspections.
  • Alcohol License : Selling alcoholic beverages requires a separate license, often subject to more stringent regulations.
  • Retail Sales License : If you sell merchandise, parts, or other retail goods, you will likely need a sales license.
  • Signage Permit : Depending on your area, you may need a permit to erect signage for your business.
  • Music License : If you play copyrighted music at your venue, you may need a license.
  • Amusement Permit : Some areas require a special permit for amusement or recreational activities.
  • Special Events Permit : You may need additional permits to host special events at your go-kart track.
  • Tax Registration : You’ll need to register for various state and federal taxes before you can open for business.

Remember, this is a general list, and requirements can vary widely. Always consult with a local business adviser, attorney, or the appropriate government department to ensure you have all the necessary permits and licenses for your go-kart business.

See,  How to Register Your Business  for all the details.

7. Considerations For Your Corporate ID

Having a logo , business cards , stationary, promotional products, brochures, etc., that all share a consistent look and feel is essential.

Logos and business cards can serve as a foundation upon which additional components can be built. In addition, you will need a professional design to leave a good impression on your customers.

See  A Complete Introduction to Corporate Identity Packages  for more.

8. Estimating Your Startup Cost

You’ll need a budget for the startup stage and the first several months of operation. Your list should begin with the issues you’ll need to pay for. As you explore costs, you may discover issues you hadn’t considered that you could add to your startup estimate.

Cost to Consider

The investment required to set up a go-kart business can be expensive. You can expect anywhere from $100,000-$300,000 or more. Your cost will depend on the size of the track and the types and quantities of karts you buy.

Can you start a business with a smaller investment? Sure, you can. Let’s look at an example.

Say you have a two-acre lot you own that is suitable for building a track. You could purchase ten used Karts, put up a sign, and pave the track, which is a start.

So, in conclusion, your startup cost depends on the setup you are considering. However, below is a sample list that can help you plan.

Sample list of startup costs and monthly expenses for a new go-kart business in the USA.

Please note that these are rough estimates, and actual costs can vary significantly based on location, size of operation, and other specifics. Some costs are one-time startup costs, while others will be recurring expenses.

Startup Costs:

  • Lease or purchase of land: $200,000
  • Building construction/renovation: $100,000
  • Go-Karts purchase (10 Karts @ $3,000 each): $30,000

  • Business registration and licensing: $1,000
  • Insurance down payment: $2,000
  • Website setup and branding: $3,000
  • Snacks and beverages for concession stand : $2,000

Startup Cost Subtotal: $358,000

Monthly Expenses:

  • Land/building lease or mortgage: $2,000
  • Utilities (electricity, water, internet, etc.): $500
  • Salaries (3 full-time staff @ $3,000/month each): $9,000

Remember, these are just rough estimates. Conducting a detailed financial analysis of your situation before starting a business is critical. This should include gathering quotes from suppliers and contractors, considering your desired location’s cost of living, and accounting for potential changes in the market.

9. Writing a Business Plan

A business plan is required when you apply for a business loan. A bank won’t even process your application without a professional one.

A business plan will help you stay focused during the startup phase and when your business is running.

The link below provides multiple possibilities for establishing one.

10. Set up Your Banking

Your business and personal finances must be kept separate. You need to open a business checking account for this purpose. Likewise, you will require a merchant account if you wish to accept credit or debit card payments.

For more on business banking, see the following articles.

  • Choosing a Business Bank
  • How To Open a Business Bank Account
  • What Is a Merchant Account, and How to Get One?

11. Get the Funding for Your Operation

Lenders consider startups high-risk investments, making it difficult to get startup financing. Investors are likelier to take a chance on an established, profitable business than on a startup.

You can get a business loan with a professional business plan that a lender trusts and enough collateral to cover the loan if the business isn’t successful.

Considerations when Meeting with a Loan Officer:

  • Loan Purpose: Clearly define the purpose of the loan for your new go-kart business. Be prepared to discuss how the funds will be used, such as purchasing equipment, securing a location, or covering operating expenses.
  • Business Plan: Develop a comprehensive business plan that outlines your go-kart business, including market analysis, target audience, revenue projections, and marketing strategies. The loan officer will want to assess the viability and profitability of your venture.
  • Financial Projections: Prepare detailed financial projections, including income statements, cash flow forecasts, and balance sheets. Provide realistic estimates based on market research and industry benchmarks to demonstrate that your business can generate sufficient revenue to repay the loan.
  • Credit History: Review your personal and business credit history before the meeting. Loan officers will evaluate your creditworthiness to assess your lending risk. Ensure your credit reports are accurate, and address any discrepancies or negative items beforehand.
  • Collateral and Personal Assets: Determine if you have any collateral or personal assets that can be used to secure the loan. This could include property, vehicles, or other valuable assets. Be prepared to provide details and documentation regarding their ownership and value.
  • Existing Debts: Take stock of your existing debts, including loans, credit cards, or other financial obligations. The loan officer will consider your debt-to-income ratio when evaluating your loan application. It’s important to demonstrate your ability to manage and repay debts responsibly.
  • Industry Knowledge: Familiarize yourself with the go-kart industry, including trends, competitors, and regulations. Knowledge of the industry will show the loan officer that you understand the challenges and opportunities in your business niche.
  • Loan Repayment Plan: Develop a clear and realistic loan repayment plan. Consider how the loan payments will fit into your overall financial strategy and ensure you have a solid plan to meet your repayment obligations.

Sample List of Documents Needed to Apply for a Business Loan for a New Go-Kart Business:

  • Completed loan application form
  • Business plan, including market analysis and financial projections
  • Personal and business tax returns for the past three years
  • Personal and business bank statements for the past six months
  • Personal and business credit reports
  • Identification documents (e.g., driver’s license, passport)
  • Proof of business ownership (e.g., articles of incorporation, partnership agreement)
  • Purchase orders or quotes for go-kart equipment or other major expenses
  • Lease agreement or proof of property ownership for the business location
  • List of existing debts, including loan statements and credit card balances
  • Documentation of collateral or personal assets that can be used as security for the loan
  • Business licenses and permits required for operating a go-kart business
  • Insurance policies (e.g., liability insurance) related to the business
  • Resumes or bios of key management personnel
  • Letters of reference or recommendation from industry professionals or business partners (optional but helpful)

Specific document requirements may vary depending on the lender and the loan program. It’s advisable to consult with the loan officer or the lending institution directly to obtain a complete and accurate list of documents needed for your particular loan application.

For ideas, see our article,  Getting a Small Business Loan.

12. Software Setup

You can organize, evaluate, and manage your company using business software . I advise you to review each software program that appeals to you.

Discover programs from the links below to help you find the software you need to manage your go-kart business.

  • Go-Kart Businesses Software
  • Small business Software

13. Get The Right Business Insurance

A business like this needs full coverage for injuries or incidents. You want to make sure your customers have excellent coverage.

You want them to have fun and experience something exciting at your entertainment center. The last thing you want is for someone to get hurt and, even worse, get hurt without coverage.

Below is a list of the issues you want to consider to get the best coverage for your go-kart business.

Starting a go-kart business presents several unique insurance needs and concerns. Consider these factors:

  • Liability Coverage: This is essential to protect your business in case of accidents, which are common in the world of go-karting. This insurance covers costs related to injuries or property damage that happen on your premises or due to your business operations.
  • Property Insurance: You’ll need this to cover your go-karts, equipment, and buildings from damages caused by events such as fire, theft, or vandalism. Ensure the policy covers the full value of your property.
  • Equipment Breakdown Insurance: Go-karts, timing systems, and other equipment can break down, causing  business interruption. This insurance would cover repair or replacement costs.
  • Workers’ Compensation: If you have employees, you’ll need workers’ compensation insurance to cover them in case they are injured on the job. This is required in most states.
  • Business Interruption Insurance: If a covered event, like a natural disaster, forces you to temporarily close, this insurance could cover loss of income and other related costs.
  • Auto Liability Insurance: This is crucial in case one of your go-karts causes injury or damage. It’s distinct from general liability insurance, which may not cover vehicle accidents.
  • Product Liability Insurance: If you sell go-karting accessories or food and beverages, product liability can protect you if a product you sold causes harm to a customer.
  • Event Cancellation Insurance: If you host special events or races, consider this insurance to protect against losses if the event has to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.
  • Cyber Liability Insurance: If your business stores customer data digitally, cyber liability insurance can cover losses related to data breaches or other cyber threats.
  • Commercial Umbrella Insurance: This can provide coverage beyond the limits of your other policies, offering additional protection in case a claim exceeds your other policy limits.
  • Seasonal Coverage: Depending on your location, go-karting might be a seasonal business. Make sure you’re not over-insured in the off-season.

Remember that every go-kart business is unique, and your insurance needs will depend on your circumstances. Working with a trusted insurance agent or broker can help ensure you get the right coverage for your business.

14. Physical Setup

For this step, you will need to focus on the layout of your operation. For example, you may want to consult a professional to ensure your go-kart track is safe, up to code, and effective while helping you decide on the best track setup.

Your track should have signage and an attractive design to impress customers.

Office Setup

Your office is where you’ll be spending time managing your business. Therefore your office should be fully equipped, organized and set up to your preference.

Business Sign

It’s time to ensure your business has a professional design and is legible from a distance because this is part of your marketing to attract new customers.

15. Website Considerations

Your website is a customer communication tool that can also be used for marketing purposes. Therefore, your website must be mobile-friendly and quick to make a good impression on your customers.

In addition, you will need to register a domain name and sign up for a reliable hosting account to ensure you have full control over your website.

See the following articles for more.

16. Consider an External Support Team

Your team consists of individuals who provide professional or consulting services that are not on your payroll but are paid hourly, by the job, on a retainer, etc. Building a team may take months or years, but waiting until the team is complete is unnecessary before utilizing it.

Create a list of potential team members and consider scheduling a meeting with them. For example, your team may consist of a lawyer, a financial advisor, an accountant, a banker, an IT professional, a marketing expert, consultants, etc.

For more, see,  Building a Team of Professional Advisors.

17. Hiring Employees

Hire only as many employees as you need when the time comes. But on the other hand, having too many employees will increase your operating costs and decrease your profits.

Each position should be filled with a candidate who is a good fit.

It is frustrating to start over when a hire doesn’t work out. Hiring mistakes result in wasted time, lost productivity, and wasted money.

Points to Consider

We have gone over the steps to start your go-kart business. Next, let’s look at a few considerations about this type of business.

Marketing any business is tough, especially when you’re starting. So here’s an idea that will cost a bit of money but, if executed correctly, will be a promotion people will remember.

Plan a grand opening to invite locals like the mayor, police chief, city council members, and even the chamber of commerce for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

During your grand opening, have a raffle where you give away a brand-new go-kart to anyone in attendance. Sure, the Kart may cost you $2,000, a tax write-off but imagine the interest it would drum up in your area. Especially when you send out a press release , the local news will spread the word so their listeners and readers can have a chance to win a new go-kart.

Since you must be present to win, you raffle the go-kart at the end of your grand opening. That way, you keep people enjoying the day’s events and becoming familiar with your business.

Another idea is to hand out tickets to local radio stations. Take out some ads for your grand opening and offer, for example, 50 free tickets for go-kart rides that the station gives out once every few hours for five days. Then, when those ticket holders come in, you will give them a great experience.

They will tell their friends that, hopefully, they will become long-term customers.

Marketing is an ongoing process for any business. Focus on the marketing techniques that make sense to you and keep using them to bring in customers and increase revenue.

No one can tell you how much profit to expect because operating expenses differ from business to business.

You may get an estimate of the profitability per sale, but a net profit can only be determined by subtracting gross revenue from total expenses. This can be calculated at the end of each month and year.

My advice for business profit is to keep your expenses as low as possible without sacrificing productivity and quality.

Finding the Perfect Location

As with any business venture, location is king when figuring out how to start your go-kart empire. You'll want a spot that's easily accessible, highly visible, and attractive to your target market--a challenging trifecta to find. The space needs to be large enough not only for the track but also for amenities like parking, concessions, and spectator areas. Additionally, zoning laws could either be your best friend or worst enemy; so thorough research here is non-negotiable. Finally, consider proximity to other attractions that might complement your offerings and increase overall foot traffic.

Securing Financing for Your Go Karts Venture

Selecting the right vehicles for your fleet isn't just about aesthetics--it's about durability, maintenance costs, safety features, and customer satisfaction too. High-quality karts may come with higher upfront costs but tend to have lower long-term expenses due to their longevity and fewer repairs needed over time. Don't skimp on timing systems or other tech that enhances the racing experience either; they're investments in customer loyalty and retention. Lastly, ensure your staff are fully trained on maintenance protocols to keep those engines purring.

America’s need for speed shows no sign of slowing down, which is good news if you want to open a go-kart business. In fact, the latest statistics show that over the past five years, the go-kart racing industry has grown by 5.7 percent with revenues of nearly $120 million in the U.S. It’s important to remember that your profits from a go-kart business aren’t solely based on the number of tickets or subscriptions you sell, but also on concessions, merchandise, corporate events and birthday parties. Understanding the steps to opening a go-kart business is the key to future success.

Create Your Business Plan to Obtain Financing

Your business plan is the most effective means to attract financing for your go-kart business, so you have to ensure that it’s complete and appealing. First, decide on your target market. Are you going to appeal to youth as an alternative to attending amusement parks, or are you going to cater to adult weekend warriors who like to imagine that they are amateur race-car drivers?

Second, what type of revenue model are you following? Will you rely mostly on selling individual tickets for rides or are you going to focus on monthly subscriptions and memberships to drive revenue? Also, will you offer a full concession area and a shop for customers to buy gear? Next, you need to determine if you will operate independently or locate your business within a larger complex to offset costs? Finally, choose a location that matches the information you’ve acquired about the mobile habits of your target audience.

Set Up Your Legal Entity

Due to the potential liability involved in a go-kart business, you may want to consider opening it as a limited liability corporation rather than a sole proprietorship or partnership. An LLC provides you with several advantages including:

  • Limited personal liability
  • Flexible tax classification
  • Flexible profit distribution
  • Limited paperwork requirements

Obtain Licenses, Permits and Insurance

In addition to obtaining local licenses and permits to operate your business, you will also have to adhere to a range of regulations, including those in regard to how you store fuel for your karts and submit to regular safety inspections. You must comply with minimum age rules for drivers who are operating a kart alone and make sure drivers below the age limit have an adult accompanying them. You should also obtain insurance on the track and buildings as well as liability insurance in case anyone gets hurt.

Create a Liability Release Form

Many business owners find it's a good idea to have customers sign a liability release form, which indemnifies them against a claim that doesn’t result from their own negligent action. The standard boilerplate in these waivers is the acknowledgment by any prospective rider that go-kart racing carries an element of risk, and that your business isn’t responsible for any injuries, health events or death arising from the actual riding of the karts. You may wish to have an attorney help you with this.

Build Your Expert Support Team

Your go-kart business can’t survive without a support team of automotive experts. This typically includes auto-repair technicians, track operators, safety instructors and fuel supervisors who oversee the storage and refueling of all your karts. You may also need track designers to change your track formation and keep the experience fresh for patrons.

Establish Your Pricing

The majority of go-kart tracks charge $3 to $5 per session. Gather information from other go-kart tracks in your state and surrounding states. Determine how much it costs to run your go-kart business, including expenses such as the cost of fuel and attendants. Charge enough to make a profit after paying basic costs to run the equipment.

Final Important Considerations

Some neighborhoods have zoning ordinances that limit noise and pollution. This could mean that you would have to obtain special permission from a council or governing board to build your go-kart business in certain municipalities. Also, it’s important that your opening day offers fantastic deals such as free rides to attract as many patrons as possible. And to reduce costs, you can forego fuel-based karts in favor of electric-powered karts that are environmentally friendly and make far less noise.

Make sure you have a marketing plan to bring in customers and don't forget about the importance of social media to spread the word.

  • Red Bull: Karting: Gas or Electric
  • IBIS World: Go-Kart Racing Tracks Industry in the US
  • Purchase safety equipment such as helmets to keep on hand for guests. Some bring their own equipment. Add a concession area for additional sales.

How to write a business plan for a go-kart?

go-kart business plan

Putting together a business plan for a go-kart can be daunting - especially if you're creating a business for the first time - but with this comprehensive guide, you'll have the necessary tools to do it confidently.

We will explore why writing one is so important in both starting up and growing an existing go-kart, as well as what should go into making an effective plan - from its structure to content - and what tools can be used to streamline the process and avoid errors.

Without further ado, let us begin!

In this guide:

Why write a business plan for a go-kart?

  • What information is needed to create a business plan for a go-kart?
  • How do I build a financial forecast for a go-kart?

The written part of a go-kart business plan

  • What tool should I use to write my go-kart business plan?

Having a clear understanding of why you want to write a business plan for your go-kart will make it simpler for you to grasp the rationale behind its structure and content. So before delving into the plan's actual details, let's take a moment to remind ourselves of the primary reasons why you'd want to create a go-kart business plan.

To have a clear roadmap to grow the business

It's rarely business as usual for small businesses. The economy follows cycles where years of growth are followed by recessions, and the business environment is always changing with new technologies, new regulations, new competitors, and new consumer behaviours appearing all the time...

In this context, running a business without a clear roadmap is like driving blindfolded: it's dangerous at best. That's why writing a business plan for a go-kart is essential to create successful and sustainable businesses.

To write an effective business plan, you will need to take stock of where you are (if you are already in business) and where you want the business to go in the next three to five years.

Once you know where you want your go-kart to be, you'll have to identify:

  • what resources (human, equipment, and capital) are needed to get there,
  • at what pace the business needs to progress to get there in time,
  • and what risks you'll face along the way.

Going through this process regularly is beneficial, both for startups and existing companies, as it helps make informed decisions about how best to allocate resources to ensure the long-term success of the business.

To maintain visibility on future cash flows

Businesses can go for years without making a profit, but they go bust as soon as they run out of cash. That's why "cash is king", and maintaining visibility on your go-kart's future cash flows is critical.

How do I do that? That's simple: you need an up-to-date financial forecast.

The good news is that your go-kart business plan already contains a financial forecast (more on that later in this guide), so all you have to do is to keep it up-to-date.

To do this, you need to regularly compare the actual financial performance of your business to what was planned in your financial forecast, and adjust the forecast based on the current trajectory of your business.

Monitoring your go-kart's financial health will enable you to identify potential financial problems (such as an unexpected cash shortfall) early and to put in place corrective measures. It will also allow you to detect and capitalize on potential growth opportunities (higher demand from a given segment of customers for example).

To secure financing

Crafting a comprehensive business plan for your go-kart, whether you're starting up or already established, is paramount when you're seeking financing from banks or investors.

Given how fragile small businesses are, financiers will want to ensure that you have a clear roadmap in place as well as command and control of your future cash flows before entertaining the idea of funding you.

For banks, the information in your business plan will be used to assess your borrowing capacity - which is defined as the maximum amount of debt your business can afford alongside your ability to repay the loan. This evaluation helps them decide whether to extend credit to your business and under what terms (interest rate, duration, repayment options, collateral, etc.).

Similarly, investors will thoroughly review your plan to determine if their investment can yield an attractive return. They'll be looking for evidence that your go-kart has the potential for healthy growth, profitability, and consistent cash flow generation over time.

Now that you understand the importance of creating a business plan for your go-kart, let's delve into the necessary information needed to craft an effective plan.

Information needed to create a business plan for a go-kart

You need the right data in order to project sales, investments and costs accurately in the financial forecast of your go-kart business plan.

Below, we'll cover three key pieces of information you should gather before drafting your business plan.

Carrying out market research for a go-kart

Before you begin writing your business plan for a go-kart, conducting market research is a critical step in ensuring precise and realistic financial projections.

Market research grants you valuable insights into your target customer base, competitors, pricing strategies, and other crucial factors that can impact the success of your business.

In the course of this research, you may stumble upon trends that could impact your go-kart.

You may discover that younger generations may have a greater interest in go-karts than older generations. Additionally, you could find that go-karts may be becoming increasingly popular in urban areas.

Such market trends play a pivotal role in revenue forecasting, as they provide essential data regarding potential customers' spending habits and preferences.

By integrating these findings into your financial projections, you can provide investors with more accurate information, enabling them to make well-informed decisions about investing in your go-kart.

Developing the sales and marketing plan for a go-kart

As you embark on creating your go-kart business plan, it is crucial to budget sales and marketing expenses beforehand.

A well-defined sales and marketing plan should include precise projections of the actions required to acquire and retain customers. It will also outline the necessary workforce to execute these initiatives and the budget required for promotions, advertising, and other marketing efforts.

This approach ensures that the appropriate amount of resources is allocated to these activities, aligning with the sales and growth objectives outlined in your business plan.

The staffing and equipment needs of a go-kart

As you embark on starting or expanding your go-kart, having a clear plan for recruitment and capital expenditures (investment in equipment and real estate) is essential for ensuring your business's success.

Both the recruitment and investment plans must align with the timing and level of growth projected in your forecast, and they require appropriate funding.

The staffing costs for a go-kart might include the cost of hiring an attendant to oversee the operation, as well as any additional workers needed for maintenance and repair of the go-karts. The equipment costs could include the price of the go-karts themselves, as well as any safety equipment needed to operate them such as helmets, harnesses, and protective clothing. Other costs might include the cost of renting out the facility or track where the go-karts are operated, as well as any additional parts or supplies needed for maintenance and repair.

To create a realistic financial forecast, you also need to consider other operating expenses associated with the day-to-day running of your business, such as insurance and bookkeeping.

With all the necessary information at hand, you are ready to begin crafting your business plan and developing your financial forecast.

What goes into your go-kart's financial forecast?

The financial forecast of your go-kart's business plan will enable you to assess the growth, profitability, funding requirements, and cash generation potential of your business in the coming years.

The four key outputs of a financial forecast for a go-kart are:

  • The profit and loss (P&L) statement ,
  • The projected balance sheet ,
  • The cash flow forecast ,
  • And the sources and uses table .

Let's look at each of these in a bit more detail.

The projected P&L statement

Your go-kart forecasted P&L statement enables the reader of your business plan to get an idea of how much revenue and profits your business is expected to make in the near future.

forecasted profit and loss statement in a go-kart business plan

Ideally, your reader will want to see:

  • Growth above the inflation level
  • Expanding profit margins
  • Positive net profit throughout the plan

Expectations for an established go-kart will of course be different than for a startup. Existing businesses which have reached their cruising altitude might have slower growth and higher margins than ventures just being started.

The projected balance sheet of your go-kart

The balance sheet for a go-kart is a financial document that provides a snapshot of your business’s financial health at a given point in time.

It shows three main components: assets, liabilities and equity:

  • Assets: are resources owned by the business, such as cash, equipment, and accounts receivable (money owed by clients).
  • Liabilities: are debts owed to creditors and other entities, such as accounts payable (money owed to suppliers) and loans.
  • Equity: includes the sums invested by the shareholders or business owners and the cumulative profits and losses of the business to date (called retained earnings). It is a proxy for the value of the owner's stake in the business.

example of projected balance sheet in a go-kart business plan

Examining the balance sheet is important for lenders, investors, or other stakeholders who are interested in assessing your go-kart's liquidity and solvency:

  • Liquidity: assesses whether or not your business has sufficient cash and short-term assets to honour its liabilities due over the next 12 months. It is a short-term focus.
  • Solvency: assesses whether or not your business has the capacity to repay its debt over the medium-term.

Looking at the balance sheet can also provide insights into your go-kart's investment and financing policies.

In particular, stakeholders can compare the value of equity to the value of the outstanding financial debt to assess how the business is funded and what level of financial risk has been taken by the owners (financial debt is riskier because it has to be repaid, while equity doesn't need to be repaid).

The cash flow forecast

As we've seen earlier in this guide, monitoring future cash flows is the key to success and the only way of ensuring that your go-kart has enough cash to operate.

As you can expect showing future cash flows is the main role of the cash flow forecast in your go-kart business plan.

example of projected cash flow forecast in a go-kart business plan

It is best practice to organise the cash flow statement by nature in order to show the cash impact of the following areas:

  • Cash flow generated from operations: the operating cash flow shows how much cash is generated or consumed by the business's commercial activities
  • Cash flow from investing activities: the investing cash flow shows how much cash is being invested in capital expenditure (equipment, real estate, etc.) either to maintain the business's equipment or to expand its capabilities
  • Cash flow from financing activities: the financing cash flow shows how much cash is raised or distributed to financiers

Looking at the cash flow forecast helps you to make sure that your business has enough cash to keep running, and can help you anticipate potential cash shortfalls.

Your go-kart business plan will normally include both yearly and monthly cash flow forecasts so that the readers can view the impact of seasonality on your business cash position and generation.

The initial financing plan

The sources and uses table or initial financing plan is a key component of your business plan when starting a go-kart.

It shows where the capital needed to set up the business will come from (sources) and how it will be spent (uses).

sources and uses table in a go-kart business plan

This table helps size the investment required to set up the go-kart, and understand how risks will be distributed between the business owners, and the financiers.

The sources and uses table also highlights what the starting cash position will be. This is key for startups as the business needs to have sufficient funding to sustain operations until the break-even point is reached.

Now that you have a clear understanding of what will go into the financial forecast of your go-kart business plan, let's have a look at the written part of the plan.

The written part of a go-kart business plan plays a key role: it lays out the plan of action you intend to execute to seize the commercial opportunity you've identified on the market and provides the context needed for the reader to decide if they believe your plan to be achievable and your financial forecast to be realistic.

The written part of a go-kart business plan is composed of 7 main sections:

  • The executive summary
  • The presentation of the company
  • The products and services
  • The market analysis
  • The strategy
  • The operations
  • The financial plan

Let's go through the content of each section in more detail!

1. The executive summary

In your go-kart's business plan, the first section is the executive summary — a captivating overview of your plan that aims to pique the reader's interest and leave them eager to learn more about your business.

When crafting the executive summary, start with an introduction to your business, including its name, concept, location, how long it has been running, and what sets it apart. Briefly mention the products and services you plan to offer and your target customer profile.

Following that, provide an overview of the addressable market for your go-kart, current trends, and potential growth opportunities.

Next, include a summary of key financial figures like projected revenues, profits, and cash flows.

Finally, in the "ask" section, detail any funding requirements you may have.

2. The presentation of the company

In your go-kart business plan, the second section should focus on the structure and ownership, location, and management team of your company.

In the structure and ownership part, you'll provide an overview of the business's legal structure, details about the owners, and their respective investments and ownership shares. This clarity is crucial, especially if you're seeking financing, as it helps the reader understand which legal entity will receive the funds and who controls the business.

Moving on to the location part, you'll offer an overview of the company's premises and their surroundings. Explain why this particular location is of interest, highlighting factors like catchment area, accessibility, and nearby amenities.

When describing the location of your go-kart to a third party financier, you may want to emphasize its potential as a business opportunity. You could discuss the population size of the area and how the area may be a suitable place for people to come and have fun. You might also point out the existing infrastructure in the area that could support a successful go-kart business. Finally, you could explain how the location may be in close proximity to other attractions or experiences that could potentially draw people to your business.

Finally, you should introduce your management team. Describe each member's role, background, and experience.

Don't forget to emphasize any past successes achieved by the management team and how long they've been working together. Demonstrating their track record and teamwork will help potential lenders or investors gain confidence in their leadership and ability to execute the business plan.

3. The products and services section

The products and services section of your go-kart business plan should include a detailed description of what your company sells to its customers.

For example, your go-kart could offer customers a range of services to enhance their experience. This could include a kart customization service to make each ride unique, a pit-stop station with spare parts and accessories, and an on-site cafe for refreshments. Each of these services would ensure customers have a fun and safe experience, as well as providing them with the opportunity to make their ride memorable.

The reader will want to understand what makes your go-kart unique from other businesses in this competitive market.

When drafting this section, you should be precise about the categories of products or services you sell, the clients you are targeting and the channels that you are targeting them through.

4. The market analysis

When outlining your market analysis in the go-kart business plan, it's essential to include comprehensive details about customers' demographics and segmentation, target market, competition, barriers to entry, and relevant regulations.

The primary aim of this section is to give the reader an understanding of the market size and appeal while demonstrating your expertise in the industry.

To begin, delve into the demographics and segmentation subsection, providing an overview of the addressable market for your go-kart, key marketplace trends, and introducing various customer segments and their preferences in terms of purchasing habits and budgets.

Next, shift your focus to the target market subsection, where you can zoom in on the specific customer segments your go-kart targets. Explain how your products and services are tailored to meet the unique needs of these customers.

For example, your target market might include thrill seekers looking for a unique way to experience a high-speed adventure. This could include people looking for a fun activity for a special occasion, such as a birthday or bachelor party. It could also include people who enjoy the adrenaline rush of racing go-karts, and would be willing to pay to experience the thrill again and again.

In the competition subsection, introduce your main competitors and explain what sets your go-kart apart from them.

Finally, round off your market analysis by providing an overview of the main regulations that apply to your go-kart.

5. The strategy section

When crafting the strategy section of your business plan for your go-kart, it's important to cover several key aspects, including your competitive edge, pricing strategy, sales & marketing plan, milestones, and risks and mitigants.

In the competitive edge subsection, clearly explain what sets your company apart from competitors. This is particularly critical if you're a startup, as you'll be trying to establish your presence in the marketplace among entrenched players.

The pricing strategy subsection should demonstrate how you aim to maintain profitability while offering competitive prices to your customers.

For the sales & marketing plan, outline how you plan to reach and acquire new customers, as well as retain existing ones through loyalty programs or special offers.

In the milestones subsection, detail what your company has achieved thus far and outline your primary objectives for the coming years by including specific dates for expected progress. This ensures everyone involved has clear expectations.

Lastly, in the risks and mitigants subsection, list the main risks that could potentially impact the execution of your plan. Explain the measures you've taken to minimize these risks. This is vital for investors or lenders to feel confident in supporting your venture - try to proactively address any objection they might have.

Your go-kart could experience mechanical failure due to wear and tear, as it is exposed to the elements and is subject to intense use. This could be a result of a lack of maintenance or an unforeseen issue. It may also be vulnerable to theft, as it is a valuable item and could be a target for criminals. It is important to take the necessary precautions to ensure your go-kart is stored securely and is well looked after.

6. The operations section

The operations of your go-kart must be presented in detail in your business plan.

The first thing you should cover in this section is your staffing team, the main roles, and the overall recruitment plan to support the growth expected in your business plan. You should also outline the qualifications and experience necessary to fulfil each role, and how you intend to recruit (using job boards, referrals, or headhunters).

You should then state the operating hours of your go-kart - so that the reader can check the adequacy of your staffing levels - and any plans for varying opening times during peak season. Additionally, the plan should include details on how you will handle customer queries outside of normal operating hours.

The next part of this section should focus on the key assets and IP required to operate your business. If you depend on any licenses or trademarks, physical structures (equipment or property) or lease agreements, these should all go in there.

You may have intellectual property such as the design of the go-kart itself and the logos or symbols associated with it. These could be protected by trademarks, copyrights, or patents. Additionally, the key assets of the go-kart might include the physical components of the kart itself, such as the frame, wheels, and engine. These could be protected by design rights or other intellectual property laws.

Finally, you should include a list of suppliers that you plan to work with and a breakdown of their services and main commercial terms (price, payment terms, contract duration, etc.). Investors are always keen to know if there is a particular reason why you have chosen to work with a specific supplier (higher-quality products or past relationships for example).

7. The presentation of the financial plan

The financial plan section is where we will present the financial forecast we talked about earlier in this guide.

Now that you have a clear idea of what goes in your go-kart business plan, let's look at the solutions you can use to draft yours.

What tool should I use to write my go-kart's business plan?

There are two main ways of creating your go-kart business plan:

  • Using specialized business planning software,
  • Hiring a business plan writer.

Using an online business plan software for your go-kart's business plan

The modern and most efficient way to write a go-kart business plan is to use business plan software .

There are several advantages to using specialized software:

  • You can easily create your financial forecast by letting the software take care of the financial calculations for you without errors
  • You are guided through the writing process by detailed instructions and examples for each part of the plan
  • You can access a library of dozens of complete business plan samples and templates for inspiration
  • You get a professional business plan, formatted and ready to be sent to your bank or investors
  • You can easily track your actual financial performance against your financial forecast
  • You can create scenarios to stress test your forecast's main assumptions
  • You can easily update your forecast as time goes by to maintain visibility on future cash flows
  • You have a friendly support team on standby to assist you when you are stuck

Hiring a business plan writer to write your go-kart's business plan

Outsourcing your go-kart business plan to a business plan writer can also be a viable option.

Business plan writers are experienced in writing business plans and adept at creating financial forecasts without errors. Furthermore, hiring a consultant can save you time and allow you to focus on the day-to-day operations of your business.

However, hiring business plan writers is expensive as you are paying for the software used by the consultant, plus their time, and their profit margin of course.

From experience, you need to budget at least £1.5k ($2.0k) excluding tax for a complete business plan, more if you need to make changes after the initial version (which happens frequently after the initial meetings with lenders or investors).

You also need to be careful when seeking investment. Investors want their money to be used to grow the business, not spent on consulting fees. Therefore, the amount you spend on business plan writing services (and other consulting services such as legal services) needs to be negligible relative to the amount raised.

The other drawback is that you usually don't own the business plan itself: you just get the output, while the actual document is saved in the consultant's business plan software - which makes it difficult to maintain the document up to date without hiring the consultant on a retainer.

For these reasons, outsourcing the go-kart business plan to a business plan writer should be considered carefully, weighing both the advantages and disadvantages of hiring outside help.

Ultimately, it may be the right decision for some businesses, while others may find it beneficial to write their business plan using online software.

Why not create your go-kart's business plan using Word or Excel?

Using Microsoft Excel and Word (or their Google, Apple, or open-source equivalents) to write a go-kart business plan is a terrible idea.

For starters, creating an accurate and error-free financial forecast on Excel (or any spreadsheet) is very technical and requires both a strong grasp of accounting principles and solid skills in financial modelling.

As a result, it is unlikely anyone will trust your numbers unless - like us at The Business Plan Shop - you hold a degree in finance and accounting and have significant financial modelling experience in your past.

The second reason is that it is inefficient. Building forecasts on spreadsheets was the only option in the 1990s and early 2000s, nowadays technology has advanced and software can do it much faster and much more accurately.

And with the rise of AI, software is also becoming smarter at helping us detect mistakes in our forecasts and helping us analyse the numbers to make better decisions.

Also, using software makes it easy to compare actuals vs. forecasts and maintain our forecasts up to date to maintain visibility on future cash flows - as we discussed earlier in this guide - whereas this is a pain to do with a spreadsheet.

That's for the forecast, but what about the written part of my go-kart business plan?

This part is less error-prone, but here also software brings tremendous gains in productivity:

  • Word processors don't include instructions and examples for each part of your business plan
  • Word processors don't update your numbers automatically when they change in your forecast
  • Word processors don't handle the formatting for you

Overall, while Word or Excel may be viable options for creating a go-kart business plan for some entrepreneurs, it is by far not the best or most efficient solution.

  • Using business plan software is a modern and cost-effective way of writing and maintaining business plans.
  • A business plan is not a one-shot exercise as maintaining it current is the only way to keep visibility on your future cash flows.
  • A business plan has 2 main parts: a financial forecast outlining the funding requirements of your go-kart and the expected growth, profits and cash flows for the next 3 to 5 years; and a written part which gives the reader the information needed to decide if they believe the forecast is achievable.

We hope that this in-depth guide met your expectations and that you now have a clear understanding of how to write your go-kart business plan. Do not hesitate to contact our friendly team if you have questions additional questions we haven't addressed here.

The pros and cons of opening a go-karting business in 2021.

outdoor go kart business plan

2021 is shaping up to be just as weird, if not weirder, than 2020. Where before we were lost in chaos, now we’re waiting in a confusing sort of purgatory. COVID-19 is still out there, showing no intentions of slowing down, while many people try to create a new normal or develop routines both safe and reliable. That leaves business owners (current and potential) stuck in a tricky spot. Is 2021 the right time to move forward with a new venture?

If you’re interested in expanding your current Family Entertainment Center by adding a go-kart track, or starting a go-karting business for the first time, you’re probably weighing the pros and cons on a daily basis.

Starting a new business of any kind is always a gamble, but there are certainly paths more likely to lead you to success. When it comes to go-karting, there are plenty of reasons why now is an excellent time to get in the game. Yet there’s much to consider in this fraught playing field and in the end, only you can know what’s best for your goals and vision. It’s more important than ever to examine every corner of what it would take to make your idea into reality.

Let’s look at some of the most prominent factors influencing your decision.

Red Light: Fearlessness

Either you are or you aren’t and if you’re not fully committed to the endeavor, you should avoid it at all costs.

Starting a business of any kind is always a massive undertaking. Even expanding an already established business can potentially throw everything off balance. It's a risk, no matter how you look at it, and it requires you to never falter.

It turns out that oftentimes, acquiring necessary funds is the easy part. It’s the acumen to keep going, to adjust and problem solve, and to learn from any stumbles along the way that determine whether you’ll succeed.

Here at Clubspeed, we know that tenacity and character are critical to the growth of not just the amazing Family Entertainment Centers we proudly serve, but our own company as well. We never shy away from feedback and see it for the valuable lesson it is. We also know that we’ll never grow or be able to provide our customers with exactly what they need, if we’re unable to adapt. Finally, if we weren’t dedicated to what we do...well, we wouldn’t be in this business in the first place.

It is inevitable that problems will arise and unforeseen circumstances can place you in situations you never imagined or planned for. How you handle those trials will tell your investors and customers immediately if they can rely on and trust you. Without that security, your business will never get off the ground. The more committed you are to pushing through the struggles and doing the hard work involved, the more likely you are to achieve your goals. If you’re absolutely sure you can move forward with the drive necessary, take a deep breath and then take that first step. If running a go-karting facility is more of a fanciful idea or daydream, it’s best to leave it that way.

Yellow Light: Pandemic

Wait, the pandemic is a yellow light? Believe it or not, it absolutely is.

Starting a go-karting business today requires a strategy owners are still trying to figure out as they go along. Why you should be slow and cautious is clear. People are staying home both to avoid getting sick or spreading germs and because finances are constrained. If no one can come to your go-kart facility because they could fall gravely ill or they can barely put food on the table, then what are you really offering your community at this time?

Use these truths to inform your business plan. The safety and well-being of your guests is always priority #1. Design your new go-kart track with that at the forefront of your mind. The safer your guests feel, the more relaxed they’ll be, allowing them to have a great time.

Understanding what your guests need is critical no matter what. If you’re able to adapt to the current circumstances, you’ll be able to make an impact. With so many families desperate to leave their homes for an adventure or two, knowing they can do so safely at your go-karting establishment is a huge draw.

Here are some ways you can make it happen:

  • Sanitize everything. Every. Thing. All of it. Every spot. All the time.
  • If possible, build your go-karting track (or part of it) outside.
  • Helmets are everyone’s friends.
  • Establish strict guidelines that you’re willing to enforce, no exceptions. Don’t be afraid to turn away customers who refuse to follow the rules.
  • Develop an organization plan that regulates capacity and make your schedule accordingly.
  • Invest in technology that allows guests to make reservations and purchase other activities or merchandise both no-contact and cashless.
  • Give back to your community. Host a food drive or fundraiser. Offer discounts to essential workers. Donate whatever you are able.

The nature of go-karting gives it an advantage when it comes to social distancing and COVID restrictions. Everyone is in their own, individual car. There’s plenty of space. Helmets and masks make for a great protective pair. By proceeding with caution and thoughtfulness, you can start a new business that uplifts your community during difficult times.

Green Light: Affordable Technology, Tools, and Opportunity

Now is the best time to access everything you need to open a successful go-karting business. The significant advancements in go-karting and entertainment center technology makes the actual management of your business easier. Best of all, they’re largely designed to be no-contact and cashless. You won’t have to pay more for software platforms that can best serve your guests during a pandemic. Those options are already affordable.

You can save even more time and money by choosing a platform that manages everything in your facility requiring oversight, all in one simple program. By doing so, you’re avoiding the extra dollars you’d spend on multiple platforms and the time needed to learn how the software works and train others.

Excellent go-karting software will be reliable and engaging. You’ll obviously want a platform that won’t incur additional costs in maintenance. You’ll also have more flexibility to grow your business the way you want to with a platform that easily adapts to your needs and can be upgraded with specific tools that set your facility apart. Entertainment Center software with open API allows just that. If you have an idea and want it to be actionable, software developers working within the API can make that happen. No new equipment, teams, or investments needed.

You’ll also benefit from a platform that offers unique opportunities to your guests. Perhaps you’d like to gamify the experience for guests, displaying a scoreboard with race results, rankings, and more. Or maybe you’d like to change the race by offering drivers fun and safe ways to slow down their opponents. You might even want a system that keeps track of the go-karts’ condition, reducing your maintenance costs. With the right platform, the opportunities are abundant and your new business will hit the ground running.

Taking the First Step

Clubspeed’s management software for FECs worldwide provides everything we’ve discussed and then some. With one platform, you can manage every component of your business, saving time, money, and eliminating stress. Startup Costs

Introduction.

Starting an outdoor go-kart business can be a lucrative venture for those who are looking to enter the recreational market. However, like any other business, starting up an outdoor go-kart track requires significant investment. Here are some of the startup costs that need to be considered.

  • The cost of purchasing a go-kart depends on the size, model, and quality of the vehicle. It is recommended to start with a small fleet and gradually expand based on customer demand.
  • The cost of construction and development of the outdoor track varies based on the size and complexity of the track and the location.
  • The cost of rental or purchase of land depends on the location and availability of land. Leasing could be a good option if the startup capital is limited.
  • The cost of safety barriers and fencing also depends on the size of the track and the materials used for installation.
  • The cost of safety equipment is negligible compared to other startup costs, but it is essential to ensure customer safety and compliance with local regulations.
  • The cost of hiring trained staff for operation and maintenance of the track varies based on their experience and qualifications. It is important to have staff trained in first aid and CPR in case of emergencies.
  • The cost of tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs includes spare parts, cleaning and maintenance tools, and other equipment to ensure the smooth operation of the track.
  • The cost of marketing and advertising expenses includes designing graphics and promotional materials, online advertising, and social media promotion.
  • The cost of legal and permit fees includes obtaining business licenses, permits for construction and operation of the track, and other legal fees required by local authorities.

1. Purchase of go-karts and other vehicles for the track

One of the biggest expenses when starting an outdoor go-kart business is the purchase of go-karts and other vehicles for the track. The cost of a go-kart can vary greatly depending on the type, make, and model. On average, a new go-kart can cost anywhere from $1,500 to $10,000.

It is important to consider the number of go-karts needed for the track, as well as any additional vehicles such as safety cars or maintenance carts. It is recommended to have at least 10 go-karts for a small track, while larger tracks may require 20 or more. This means the cost of purchasing go-karts alone can range from $15,000 to $200,000 or more.

It is also important to consider the cost of maintenance for these vehicles. Regular maintenance is necessary to keep the go-karts and other vehicles running smoothly and safely. Maintenance costs can range from a few hundred to several thousand dollars per month depending on the size of the track and number of vehicles.

One option to save on the initial investment in go-karts is to purchase used or refurbished vehicles. However, it is important to thoroughly inspect these vehicles and ensure they meet safety standards before putting them into use on the track.

  • Example: 10 new go-karts at $2,000 each = $20,000
  • Example: 20 used go-karts at $1,000 each = $20,000
  • Example: Additional vehicles (safety cars, maintenance carts, etc.) at $5,000 each = $15,000

2. Construction and Development of the Outdoor Track

Constructing an outdoor go-kart track requires careful planning and execution. According to industry experts, the cost of constructing an outdoor track can range from $150,000 to $500,000 depending on the size and complexity of the track. Factors that determine the cost of construction of an outdoor go-kart track include the design of the track, the amount of earthwork required, materials used, track length, and facility amenities.

A well-designed outdoor track should provide a challenging and exhilarating racing experience for customers while adhering to safety standards. The quality and durability of the track surface should be a top priority when constructing an outdoor track, as it affects the performance and safety of the go-karts. Using high-quality materials such as asphalt or concrete, and investing in proper drainage systems, are proven methods to minimize maintenance and upkeep.

Aside from the track itself, other cost considerations include landscaping, lighting, fencing, and parking. The cost of fencing will depend on the perimeter of the track and the height of the fence required for safety. Lighting can be an added expense, but necessary for evening racing events. Landscaping can add to the ambience of the facility, but should not compromise safety and functionality. Lastly, adequate parking space should be available to accommodate visitors.

The development of an outdoor go-kart track is a multi-step process that requires compliance with zoning and environmental regulations, as well as obtaining permits from local authorities. Before construction begins, an engineering analysis should be conducted to ensure the site is suitable and safe for a kart track. Some states have regulations in place to prevent noise pollution and restrict the hours of operation for outdoor tracks. It is important to research and comply with all local regulations.

Overall, the construction and development of an outdoor go-kart track requires significant capital investment. However, with proper planning and execution, it can provide a profitable and enjoyable business venture for entrepreneurs. Investing in quality construction and equipment, regular maintenance, and safety protocol adherence can ensure the success of the venture.

  • Investing in quality construction and equipment, regular maintenance, and safety protocol adherence can ensure the success of the venture.

3. Rental or purchase of land for the track

The cost of land varies widely depending on the location, size, and zoning of the property. In some urban areas, the cost per acre can be in the millions of dollars, while in rural areas it can be significantly less expensive. According to recent data, the average cost of an acre of land for commercial use in the US ranges from $5,000 to $125,000.

If you plan to rent land for your outdoor go-kart track, the costs will depend on the length and terms of the lease. Short-term leases (1-2 years) usually have higher monthly rents, while long-term leases (10 years or more) offer lower monthly rents but require a larger upfront payment. In general, renting land can range from $500 to $20,000 per year depending on the location and size of the property.

Alternatively, purchasing land for your go-kart track can be a significant expense but provides long-term benefits. The cost of buying land varies widely depending on the location, size, and zoning. The average cost of an acre of land for commercial use in US ranges from $5,000 to $125,000. If you plan to buy land, it’s important to conduct a thorough real estate search to find the perfect location for your go-kart track.

In addition to the cost of land, there may be other expenses associated with developing the property for a go-kart track. These may include site preparation, such as grading or leveling the land and installing utilities. Depending on the location, zoning, and local regulations, the cost of permits and government fees may also be required.

  • Example 1: A go-kart enthusiast in Colorado Springs, CO purchased 20 acres of land for $400,000 to build his track. He estimated that the cost of permits and site preparation was an additional $100,000.
  • Example 2: A group of investors in Orlando, FL leased 10 acres of land for a period of 15 years at a cost of $10,000 per month. They estimated that the cost of site preparation and permits was an additional $80,000.

4. Installation of Safety Barriers and Fencing around the Track Perimeter

The safety of customers is of utmost importance in the outdoor go-kart business. To ensure this, safety barriers and fencing around the track perimeter must be installed. The costs of the installation can vary depending on a few factors which are mentioned below.

The size of the track: The cost of the installation will depend on the size of the outdoor go-kart track. For a small track, the cost of installation could be around $5,000 while a larger track could cost upwards of $50,000.

The type of fencing: The type of fencing used around the track perimeter is another factor that affects the cost. Chain link fencing is a popular choice and can cost around $3 to $6 per linear foot. For a track with a perimeter of 1,000 feet, the cost of the fencing would be between $3,000 and $6,000. Other types of fencing, such as wooden or vinyl, could be more expensive.

The quality of safety barriers: There are various types of safety barriers used in outdoor go-kart tracks, such as tire walls, water barriers, and concrete barriers. Each type of barrier has different costs associated with it. For instance, tire walls may cost between $25 and $50 per linear foot, while concrete barriers can cost up to $500 per linear foot.

The location: The location of the outdoor go-kart track can also affect the cost of installing safety barriers and fencing. Different states and municipalities have different regulations regarding track safety, which can impact installation costs. Depending on the location, installation costs can vary between $10,000 to $70,000 or more.

Therefore, the total cost of installing safety barriers and fencing around the track perimeter can range from $5,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on various factors. It is important to keep in mind that the cost of installation is a one-time expense, but it is critical to ensure the safety of customers and protect the business from liability issues.

  • Example 1: If the outdoor go-kart track is small, with a perimeter of 500 feet, and uses chain link fencing, the cost of the installation could be around $8,000, including safety barriers.
  • Example 2: For a larger track of around 1,500 feet, with concrete barriers for safety, the cost of installation could be around $150,000.

5. Purchase of safety equipment such as helmets and fire extinguishers

Ensuring the safety of customers is a top priority for any outdoor go-kart business. Purchasing safety equipment such as helmets and fire extinguishers is essential to prevent and manage accidents. The cost of purchasing safety equipment can vary depending on the quality and quantity needed.

The average cost for a high-quality go-kart helmet ranges from $100 to $200 .

Fire extinguishers are another necessary safety equipment in case of a fire accident. The cost of a fire extinguisher ranges from $20 to $50 depending on the size and type of extinguisher.

For a standard-sized outdoor go-kart track, the purchase of safety equipment, including helmets, fire extinguishers, and other necessary safety gears can cost around $2,000 to $3,500 .

It can also be a good investment to purchase more robust safety equipment such as barriers or cages to prevent collisions and accidents on the track. The cost of such equipment can range from $1,000 to $20,000 depending on quality and quantity needed.

In summary, purchasing safety equipment is essential for the safety of customers in any outdoor go-kart business. The cost can vary depending on the quantity and quality needed, but an estimated cost of $2,000 to $3,500 can be expected for a standard-sized track. Additionally, larger investments such as barriers or cages can be made to prevent accidents on the track.

6. Hiring of trained staff for operation and maintenance of the track

When opening an outdoor go-kart business, hiring trained staff for operation and maintenance of the track is crucial. The cost of hiring staff will vary depending on factors such as the location of the track and the number of employees required. However, according to recent studies, the average cost of wages for staff can range from $10-$20 per hour.

It is important to hire staff members who are experienced in the operation and maintenance of go-karts. In addition to wages, employers will also need to consider the cost of training and certification for each employee. This can cost anywhere from $500-$1000 per staff member.

One way to save money on staff costs is to consider hiring part-time or seasonal employees. Many college students are looking for part-time work during the summer months and are a great resource for businesses looking to fill seasonal positions. Part-time staff can also help during peak hours and weekends, when the track is most busy.

Another important factor to consider when hiring staff is insurance costs. As with any business that involves physical activity, there is the potential for accidents and injuries. It is important to have liability insurance coverage for the business and employees. The cost of this insurance can vary depending on the size of the business, but employers can expect to pay an average of $2000-$3000 per year in insurance costs.

In addition to wages, training, and insurance, employers should also consider the cost of uniforms and safety gear for staff members. This can include items such as helmets, safety goggles, and work boots. These costs can vary depending on the number of staff members required, but employers should budget an average of $500-$1000 for uniforms and safety gear.

Overall, the cost of hiring trained staff for operation and maintenance of the track can be a significant expense for outdoor go-kart businesses. However, it is a necessary cost in order to ensure the safety of customers and the smooth operation of the track. By hiring experienced staff, offering training and certification, and providing appropriate safety gear, businesses can attract customers and establish a reputation for safety and professionalism.

  • Employers can save money on staff costs by hiring part-time or seasonal employees.
  • Training and certification of each staff member is also a necessary expense.
  • Liability insurance coverage for the business and employees is crucial for the safety of the customers as well as the business.
  • Uniforms and safety gear such as helmets, safety goggles, and work boots are also an important expense for businesses.

7. Purchase of tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs

When starting an outdoor go-kart business, it is important to understand the costs associated with purchasing and maintaining tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs. According to recent statistics, the average cost for tools and equipment can range anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 USD, depending on the size of the business and the number of karts being used.

Tools and Equipment for Regular Maintenance: Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity of the karts and keep them in good working condition. This can include items such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and other hand tools. In addition, a pressure washer, air compressor, and hydraulic jack can be helpful for cleaning and servicing the karts. The cost of these tools can vary, but on average, it can range from $2,000 to $5,000 USD.

Equipment for Repairs: Even with regular maintenance, go-karts will inevitably need repairs from time to time, such as replacing tires, brakes, or engines. It is important to have the necessary equipment on hand to make these repairs, such as a tire changer machine, engine hoist, and welding equipment. On average, these equipment costs can range from $3,000 to $6,000 USD.

Inventory Management Software: Effective inventory management is critical for any business, and go-kart tracks are no exception. By investing in inventory management software, you can keep track of your tools and equipment, monitor usage, and reorder supplies when necessary. The cost of inventory management software can vary, but on average, it can range from $1,000 to $3,000 USD.

Training and Certification: The final consideration when purchasing tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs is ensuring that your staff are trained and certified to safely operate the equipment. This includes completing a training course on how to safely use the equipment and becoming certified to perform specific tasks. The cost of training and certification can range from $500 to $1,500 USD per employee.

  • Hand tools: $2,000 to $5,000 USD
  • Tire changer machine, engine hoist, and welding equipment: $3,000 to $6,000 USD
  • Inventory management software: $1,000 to $3,000 USD
  • Training and certification: $500 to $1,500 USD per employee

Overall, the cost of purchasing tools and equipment for maintenance and repairs can be a significant investment for a go-kart business. However, by budgeting for these expenses and investing in quality tools and equipment, you can help ensure the long-term success and sustainability of your business.

8. Marketing and advertising expenses to promote the business

Marketing and advertising expenses are a crucial part of any business, and the outdoor go-kart business is no exception. The amount needed for marketing and advertising expenses can vary based on location, competition, and target audience. On average, the costs can range from $5,000 to $10,000 for a basic marketing campaign.

A significant portion of the marketing budget should be allocated towards online advertising, including social media ads, Google AdWords, and website development and optimization. Depending on the target audience, the costs for these platforms can range from $500 to $2,000 per month.

While online marketing is essential, traditional advertising methods should not be overlooked. Flyers, billboards, and print ads in local newspapers can cost anywhere from $500 to $2,000 depending on the size and frequency of the ads.

Sponsoring local events or supporting charity organizations can also be an effective way to market the business. The costs for event sponsorship can range from $1,000 to $5,000 , while charity donations can be as low as $50 to $100 .

Word of mouth is another powerful marketing tool for the outdoor go-kart business. Offering discounted rates or free rides for customers who refer others to the track can help generate repeat business and attract new customers. The costs for these referral programs can be minimal, as low as $100 to $500 .

  • Marketing and advertising expenses can range from $5,000 to $10,000
  • Online advertising costs can range from $500 to $2,000 per month
  • Traditional advertising methods can cost $500 to $2,000
  • Event sponsorships can cost $1,000 to $5,000
  • Charity donations can be as low as $50 to $100
  • Referral programs can cost $100 to $500

It is essential to develop a comprehensive marketing and advertising plan to ensure the business is effectively reaching its target audience while staying within the allocated budget. A combination of both online and traditional advertising methods, along with word-of-mouth referrals, can help maximize exposure and attract a steady stream of customers.

9. Legal and permit fees for operating the business.

When it comes to opening an outdoor go-kart business, there are several legal and permit fees that you will need to consider. These vary depending on your location, but it's important to budget for them to ensure that you comply with all the necessary regulations.

According to recent reports, the average legal and permit fees for operating an outdoor go-kart business in the US range from $5,000 to $10,000. This includes fees for licenses, permits, inspections, and legal fees.

One of the most important permits you will need to obtain is a zoning permit. This ensures that your business complies with local zoning regulations and is allowed to operate in your chosen location. The cost for a zoning permit can range from $500 to $1,500.

You will also need to obtain a business license, which typically costs around $50 to $400 depending on your location. This license is required by the state government and allows you to legally operate your business.

Another important fee to consider is liability insurance. This protects you and your business from potential legal claims if a customer is injured while using your go-karts. The cost of liability insurance varies depending on your location and the size of your business, but it's important to budget for at least $1,000 to $2,000 per year.

In addition to these fees, you may also need to pay for inspections and permits from the health department, fire department, and building department. The cost of these inspections can range from $500 to $2,000 depending on your location.

  • Zoning permit cost: $500 to $1,500
  • Business license cost: $50 to $400
  • Liability insurance cost: at least $1,000 to $2,000 per year
  • Inspection and permit costs: $500 to $2,000

It's important to note that these fees are only an estimate and may vary depending on your location and the size of your business. It's essential to do your research and budget accordingly to ensure that your business complies with all necessary regulations and is able to operate legally.
