‘Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum’: Fahadh Faasil impresses in Akhil Sathyan debut
In his directorial debut, ‘Pachuvum Athbhutha Vilakkum’, Akhil Sathyan has played it safe following the footsteps of his father and brother to make a feel-good movie which has almost all the elements to hook the theatre-going Malayali families. It, once again, works too.
The film draws largely from the Sathyan Anthikad legacy – a middle class Malayali hero, his struggles, support system and survival wrapped in humour and laced with emotions – and is presented in a package that looks new and colourful, just like Anoop Sathyan’s 2020 debut ‘Varane Avashyamund’.
'Aavesham': Fahadh Faasil reigns supreme as 'Ranga' in Jithu Madhavan's comedy-entertainer | Movie Review
'Varshangalkku Sesham' Review | A bittersweet tribute to tinsel town’s oddball residents
‘Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum’ has a lovable hero, his perfect parents, a life lesson he learned from a mistake in the past, and his determination to grow. Then there’s a feisty old woman, her filthy rich son and a helpless girl. The plot, after floating around the life of the protagonist in Mumbai and Kerala offering some mirthful moments, gets into serious business as the young man and the old woman meet each other. The incidents following a train journey the two take from Kerala to Mumbai make the rest of the film. The setting then is shifted to Goa where the bachelor hero meets the bold-looking heroin who also has a share of problems -- a personal tragedy and a toxic relationship.
Fahadh Faasil plays Prashanth (Pachu), who runs an ayurveda clinic in Mumbai, with ease. The virtues and vulnerabilities of Pachu are safe with the actor in Fahadh. He has played similar characters in the past and his mannerisms, timeliness and dialogue delivery were just enough to conquer the viewers yet again. He gets a deadly combo in the film with Althaf Salim who plays Pachu’s assistant at the pharmacy. Althaf’s antics, reactions and one-liners made his character the best when it comes to comedy in the film. The sequences involving Mukesh, Innocent and Srikant Murali looked straight out of the Anthikad filmdom, for all their effectiveness and faults.
The surprise among the performances comes from Viji Venkatesh, who plunged into acting after a long career in cancer patient care. Viji essays the role of Ummachi, the sophisticated, multilingual and kind-hearted Muslim woman whose strange behaviour shifts the pace of the narrative. Viji has convincingly played the role, delivering her transformations with elan. Anjana Jayaprakash pulls out an impressive performance as Hamsadhwani, a designer working in Goa. The interactions between Pachu and Hamsadhwani form fun, delight and drama. Dhwani Rajesh could portray the innocence and helplessness of the teen girl around who the plot is centred while watching Avyukt Menon as the cute and funny little boy on his way back to Mumbai from Sabarimala was a joy.
The setting in Goa gave the film a fresh feeling. The director explored Goa, beyond its beaches, and turned his camera into the less-noticed interiors and ghettos of the coastal state. The film, despite its humorous progress, could have been trimmed here and there. The debut director, being the editor, perhaps did not want to leave anything out.
It has a predictable climax, but the progress until there is engaging. The background score has some musical brilliance, though the songs don’t leave any impression.

'Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum' review: Laidback entertainer with enough laughs, romance
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum comes from the mind of Akhil Sathyan, one of the twin siblings born to Sathyan Anthikad. If you thought the sensibilities of Varane Avashyamundu, directed by Anoop Sathyan, reminded you of those in his father’s earlier films, wait till you see Pachuvuam Athbutha Vilakkum .
The ‘Sathyan Anthikad’ DNA is more evident in this one. There is the flawed hero who isn’t instantly likeable. Prashanth, a.k.a Pachu, is merely a franchisee of a reputed Ayurvedic pharmacy. But he likes to play the boss. His explanation? After three years of toiling as a therapist, he wants to take it easy. It’s an attitude that’s true of many bosses.
Akhil, who also edited the film, opts for a leisurely pace. He takes his time establishing Pachu and his background, dedicating the entire pre-interval segment to just that. The basic idea is to make us feel completely at ease. In spite of a few tense moments, it is wary of increasing our blood pressure. Akhil comes up with several brilliant laugh-inducing gags that felt novel to me. And even though the screenplay takes a relatively serious turn post-interval, it isn’t completely devoid of humour. The comic timing of Fahadh, Althaf Salim (the standout performer), and a brief appearance by the late Innocent ensure that.
One situation has Pachu dealing with a fish bone stuck in his throat. Another involves a proposal that goes awry due to Pachu’s interference. And what about the old Maruti with a self-honking capability? The mood of Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum recalled the good old days when Priyadarshan, Siddique and Sathyan Anthikad used to deliver one ingenious comedy after another, written either by them or Sreenivasan.
Akhil’s script of Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum has that same laidback quality. No matter how many things go wrong, you get the sense that things will be alright eventually. You may call it ‘predictable’, but I don’t see anything wrong with that. Sometimes that’s just what I want—to be comforted, not challenged. And Akhil doesn’t hold back when it comes to showing how much impact his father’s work has had on him, which he illustrates through a few scenes where people are watching vintage Sathyan Anthikad movies, either on their television sets or smartphones.
That’s not to say Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum doesn’t have any depth. It does, but not the kind where it’s trying hard to show how deep it is. Its emotions are accessible. Pachu, for instance, acknowledges that he once used to be a toxic character. But he evolves to a point where we find him slightly endearing. This evolution comes about through a complicated—not for us, but the characters— parallel story involving a quirky but distinguished grandmother Laila (Viji Venkatesh), her influential but passive-aggressive son (Vineeth), and a mature, strong-minded Goa-based Malayali graphic designer Hamsadhwani (Anjana Jayaprakash).
There are more, but I don’t want to let out any potential spoilers. Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum is a case of casting done right. These actors embody the quirks and nuances of their characters so well. Take Laila, for example. She is a bit adventurous. There is a whole joke involving her pepper spray. She inaugurates it by testing it on herself. I couldn’t help but laugh. I thought, “Here at last is a Malayalam movie grandmother who doesn’t behave like the usual Malayalam movie grandmothers!”
I also liked how Anjana Jayaprakash doesn’t make her character Hamsadhawni sound like a woman from a Mills & Boon novel. She is convincing as a character trying hard to fill a void recently left in her life.
What about Fahadh, you might ask? While the arc of Pachu is not what one would call fresh, considering how the transformation he goes through gets prompted by the presence of a female character, a trope we have seen in more than one Sathyan Anthikad film, Fahadh throws in the most appropriate reactions to every situation. My favourite is the one where he has to rely on hand gestures while nursing a mouth injury.
Nowadays, I get instantly sceptical about any Malayalam movie with a three (or near) hour duration—unless, of course, it’s an epic with a visual scope and competent storytelling that demands it. Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum demands it. It’s structured like a lighthearted novel, with characters expressing believable emotions and concerns.
Is the template original? Not quite. There are places where Akhil’s experience with documentaries lends a sense of authenticity to the way locations like Mumbai and Goa are depicted. There are places where it aspires to be a fairytale. But I’m not complaining. I went in expecting a wholesome, but not too syrupy, experience that would leave a smile on my face, and that’s exactly what I got.

Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum (Pachu and The Magic Lamp) marks the debut movie of Akhil Sathyan, the son of ace director Sathyan Anthikad.
Sathyan Anthikad’s films have a pattern: they all have a protagonist who becomes the saviour of the victims. This can be seen in Snehaveedu (The Affectionate House, 2011), Oru Indian Pranaya Katha (An Indian Love Story, 2013), Njan Prakashan (I’m Prakashan, 2018), and Makal (Daughter, 2022).
Now that his son turned into a filmmaker, it’s natural for audiences to compare them with each other. And I must say, Akhil Sathyan’s debut follows a similar pattern.
But then, it thoroughly entertains the viewers with the one-liner comedy punches delivered by lead actor Fahadh Faasil and other actors.
Message-oriented plot

The title hints about the storyline — Pachu aka Prasanth (Fahadh Faasil) gets a magic lamp; whether he uses it or not forms the crux of the film.
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum starts with the introduction of Pachu, 34, who runs an Ayurveda pharmacy in Mumbai. He lives a content life and plans to open new franchises across the city.
He travels to Kerala for some business needs where a hilarious incident leads to the cancellation of his return journey to Mumbai. This is the turning point of the movie.
Pachu is told to accompany his building owner Riyaz (Vineeth)’s mother Ummachi (Viji Venkatesh) to Mumbai from Kerala. Ummachi is a bold lady and has a mission to complete which her son doesn’t approve of.
On their way to Mumbai, Ummachi gets down at Goa while Pachu is asleep. But Pachu traces her to Hamsadhwani (Anjana Jayaprakash)’s residence in Goa.
He finds out that Ummachi wants to teach Nidhi (Dhwani Rajesh) who hails from a backward class.

Nidhi’s mother Naani (Chaaya Kadam) used to work as a maid at Riyaz’s house. It’s then that Ummachi realises that Nidhi is good at her studies. She wants to provide her with a good education. However, the mother-daughter duo leave for their ancestral home in Goa due to certain reasons.
Now, Ummachi makes lucrative offers to Pachu to accomplish her mission. She even assigns him the task of abducting Nidhi from her ancestral home as her relatives — who are local goons — don’t agree to her pursuing higher studies.
How Pachu accomplishes his task is better watched on the big screens.
Fine performances
Akhil Sathyan’s directorial ‘Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum’. (Supplied)
Mukesh appears as Pachu’s father Rajan. It’s just a cakewalk for the veteran actor who is a champion in comedy sequences.
His chemistry with the late actor Innocent is hilarious. Innocent played an interesting character who is fond of smartphones and uses (iPhone’s) “Siri” to get his tasks done.
Anjana Jayaprakash as Hamsadhwani is the female lead in the movie who has a tragic backstory. She works as a designer in a firm in Goa and is in a toxic relationship with her boyfriend Vivek (Sanju Sivaram).
The scene where Pachu offers advice to Hamsadhwani about her boyfriend is quite hilarious.

Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum is pretty engaging because of such comedy scenes by Fahash Faasil.
Althaf as Pachu’s staff in the pharmacy complements the actor in humour.
Viji Venkatesh, a well-known cancer-care specialist and country head of Max Foundation, as Ummachi is unbelievable.

She essays a character who does anything to educate Nidhi; in a scene, she even uses pepper spray in self-defence!
Senior actor Vineeth gets a good role as Riyaz and this is a bit different from his previous ones.
Debutante Anjana Jayaprakash is impressive. She delivers a good performance in emotional scenes.
Dhwani Rajesh Nidhi always has sadness in her face which is static. But her static face needs a smile at some point in time!
Santhi Krishna as Pachu’s mother has nothing much to do.
Ahana Krishna Kumar gets a small role to play as Aiswarya.
Indrans as Ravindran is good.
Technical crafts
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum talks about the options that come in the form of vices and virtue Pachu has to choose. The way he deals with the situations and overcomes the obstacles makes for an interesting watch.
In the duration of two-hour-fifty-one minutes, the director gets ample time to narrate the story.

Since he is also the editor of the film, Akhil Sathyan should have shortened the runtime. Nevertheless, he manages to engage the audience with situational comedy.
Justin Prabhakaran’s music sets the mood for the movie which is mostly high on emotions.
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum is a message-oriented film that flaunts good performances by the lead actors and a strong message: right to education for girlchild.
Comic timing by Fahadh Faasil, Mukesh and other actors makes it a worthy watch.

Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum Movie Review (2023)
- 28 Apr 2023
Akhil Sathyan’s 'Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum', on Prime Video, is proof that templates are never an issue if the storytelling is strong
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum Movie Cast & Crew
In Vinodayathra , a flawed but essentially good-natured man learns a bunch of life lessons from the people around him. In Jomonte Suvisheshangal , a flawed but essentially good-natured man learns a bunch of life lessons from the people around him. In Njan Prakashan , a flawed but essentially good-natured man learns a bunch of life lessons from the people around him. Like it or leave it – I am on the "like it" side – that's the Sathyan Anthikad template, and his son, Akhil makes his debut with Pachuvum Athbuthavilakkum , the story of… a flawed but essentially good-natured man who learns a bunch of life lessons from the people around him. Why do the same stories – at least the same story templates – keep drawing us in? I can't speak for everyone, but these variations on a theme speak to me because I, too, am flawed though good-natured. (I hope! I hope!)
Perhaps I see a younger version of myself in these characters – I don't want to call them "leading men" – and I suspect many people will. Fahadh Faasil plays Pachu, and the magic lamp of the title is not something that gives him material riches but something that bestows him with human treasures. That " athbutha vilakku '' is life itself, which the writer-director treats like a sprawling journey filled with many, many detours and stops and fellow-travellers. Some might say that this three-hour film seems to be filled with "unnecessary" characters, but pay close attention and you will see – for instance – the reason a long stretch with the boy who wakes up early and delivers newspapers over the opening credits, as Justin Prabhakaran's beautiful motivational song, ' Chalte raho ', plays on the soundtrack. He is what someone would become without an education, and his sister wants to study. We aren't explicitly told about this brother-sister bond, but the geography of their house is so distinct – with its unique staircase – that we know they belong to the same household.
Pachu runs an Ayurveda shop in Mumbai, and even this system of ancient medicine becomes a "character": late in the film, Pachu refers to a kind of massage that leaves you temporarily drained but makes you feel refreshed a few days later. Pachu, similarly, has been pummelled by a series of events, but a little later, he emerges stronger – strong enough to stop being self-centred and think about other people. One of these people is a young girl, whose higher education is at stake because her penniless family wants her to work menial jobs and make money. The question is not whether Pachu saves her. That is a given. The real issue is that, when Pachu sets out to save her and ends up surrounded by her people in a maze-like locality, she takes his hand and leads him out. She declares her cry of independence instead of Pachu having to give a lecture on her behalf.
And even better, the real "saviour" of this moment is an old man (the great Mohan Agashe) whose mere look can reduce people to fear. It's a super "mass" moment that plays out in complete silence. Many people in the big cast – like Mohan Agashe, or Indrans, or the late Innocent, or Ahaana Krishna, or the actor who plays that newspaper boy – may only be seen briefly, but their scenes count. Their scenes add up to the "life" that becomes Pachu's "magic lamp". Take the Malayali assistant who Pachu has brought to Mumbai to help with the shop. This young man's existence makes Pachu lazy, as he does not have to be at the shop all day. As a pure narrative device, this man performs three functions: he shows us a facet of Pachu's character (including the fact that Pachu used to be a chauvinist), he infuses comedy through his inability to speak Hindi, and his presence at the shop allows Pachu to take off to Kerala, which gets the ball rolling in terms of the story.
The film is not perfect. Some jokes land, like the one involving a man urinating on a compound wall or the one involving pepper spray. Some other jokes try too hard. There are some odd touches, like the fact that Pachu is 34 years old and he has met 34 prospective brides to no avail. And for a while, I kept wondering if so much detailing was necessary. Why not cut to the chase sooner? But then the design clicked and I settled down. If a long scene around a fish meal had not occurred, Pachu would not have had to stay back in Kerala, and if he had not stayed back, he would not have been entrusted with an important task. And if that task had not happened, he would not have met Hamsadhwani (Anjana Jayaprakash). And if her (unseen) roommate had not been a travel vlogger, he might have not been able to stay in her house. But this is not a love story. One of the nicest things is that Pachu's mother wants him to find a girl. By the end, he does "find a girl" and it's not the girl you expect.
Even the broad-stroke, old-fashioned touches mostly work. Vineeth plays a very rich man who has his grey shades, but a story from when he was a child shows us how generous he used to be and how growing up can make us shrink inside. Sometimes, the more we have, the more we want, the less willing we become to share. At first, we think this character has a certain kind of relationship with his mother, but slowly, we see a different shade. Is this sentimental? Yes, of course. But it's a good kind of sentimentality – something that is built up to and not dropped on us like a brick, in order to squeeze a few easy tears from us. For a large part, Akhil Sathyan doesn't spoon-feed the audience. He drops a hint that Hamsadhwani has suffered some personal trauma, and only later do we see what it is. I liked it that we learn the nickname of a character before we learn his name, and the scene containing this revelation is beautiful. Suddenly, we realise why this seaside location is this woman's favourite spot. We also realise that tragedies won't leave us unless we let those memories go.
I wished some characters had gotten a better sense of closure, like the kid going to Sabarimala. I wished some characters had been written better, like the toxic boyfriend. But the only real problem I had with Pachuvum Athbuthavilakkum is the background score. The film has the offbeat and somewhat minimalist rhythms of a documentary and the cutesy score keeps underlining every emotion and tries too hard to over-emphasise each scene. This undermines the hard work of the actors. Fahadh shows us how a thinking performer can freshen up a familiar role, but the film belongs to three women from three generations: Anjana Jayaprakash, Viji Venkatesh as the older woman who kicks the plot into motion, and young Dhwani Rajesh, whose "educate the girl child" subplot is treated humanistically and (thankfully) not hammered home as a message. The film's real "message", for me, is that life is a meandering journey, as strange as something from the Arabian Nights , and at least in the Anthikad-family films, there's always a magic lamp waiting around the corner.

The wait for Fahadh Faasil’s latest Malayalam entertainer Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum to hit an OTT platform is over. The movie, which marks the directorial debut of Sathyan Anthikad’s son Akhil, is currently streaming on a leading platform in Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

Fahadh essays the role of Prashanth aka Pachu, who runs an ayurveda franchisee in Mumbai. During one of his trips to his hometown in Kerala, Pachu is tasked with accompanying an older lady named Laila on a train journey back to Mumbai. Laila, however, decides to get down in Goa, midway through the journey, throwing a spanner in Pachu’s plans. How Pachu’s life then crosses that of two other women – Hamsadhwani and Nidhi – and the changes his character brings in their lives form the plot of the film, which is also co-produced, edited and written by Akhil.
Apart from the lead cast, the movie also has several cameos by Ahaana Krishna, Shruti Ramachandran, Srikanth Murali and Naslen. Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

The film, which released on the platform, exactly a month after its theatrical release, was still going strong in theatres in Kerala, having grossed over Rs 15 crore with the bulk of collections coming in the last few weeks.
Akhil, in a recent interview with us, said that the theatre exhibitors had requested him to delay its OTT release for a few weeks due to the demand for the film, which was running to packed theatres in select cinema halls. “I am thrilled about the feedback especially because we didn’t give enough publicity for the film either. In fact, the worst collections for the movie were on its first day and after that the content of the movie promoted itself,” added the director.

Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum Movie Review: Laidback entertainer with enough laughs, romance
Rating: ( 3.5 / 5).
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum comes from the mind of Akhil Sathyan, one of the twin siblings born to Sathyan Anthikad. If you thought the sensibilities of Varane Avashyamundu , directed by Anoop Sathyan, reminded you of those in his father's earlier films, wait till you see Pachuvuam Athbutha Vilakkum . The 'Sathyan Anthikad' DNA is more evident in this one. There is the flawed hero who isn't instantly likeable. Prashanth, a.k.a Pachu, is merely a franchisee of a reputed Ayurvedic pharmacy. But he likes to play the boss. His explanation? After three years of toiling as a therapist, he wants to take it easy. It's an attitude that's true of many bosses.
Director: Akhil Sathyan
Cast: Fahadh Faasil, Anjana Jayaprakash, Viji Venkatesh, Vineeth, Mukesh, Innocent
And even though the screenplay takes a relatively serious turn post-interval, it isn't completely devoid of humour. The comic timing of Fahadh, Althaf Salim (the standout performer), and a brief appearance by the late Innocent ensure that. One situation has Pachu dealing with a fish bone stuck in his throat. Another involves a proposal that goes awry due to Pachu's interference.
Akhil's script of Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum has that same laidback quality. No matter how many things go wrong, you get the sense that things will be alright eventually. You may call it 'predictable', but I don't see anything wrong with that. Sometimes that's just what I want -- to be comforted, not challenged. And Akhil doesn't hold back when it comes to showing how much impact his father's work has had on him, which he illustrates through a few scenes where people are watching vintage Sathyan Anthikad movies, either on their television sets or smart phones.
That's not to say Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum doesn't have any depth. It does, but not the kind where it's trying hard to show how deep it is. Its emotions are accessible. Pachu, for instance, acknowledges that he once used to be a toxic character. But he evolves to a point where we find him slightly endearing. This evolution comes about through a complicated -- not for us, but the characters -- parallel story involving a quirky but distinguished grandmother Laila (Viji Venkatesh), her influential but passive-aggressive son (Vineeth), and a mature, strong-minded Goa-based Malayali graphic designer Hamsadhwani (Anjana Jayaprakash). There are more, but I don't want to let out any potential spoilers.
Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum is a case of casting done right. These actors embody the quirks and nuances of their characters so well. Take Laila, for example. She is a bit adventurous. There is a whole joke involving her pepper spray. She inaugurates it by testing it on herself. I couldn't help but laugh. I thought, "Here at last is a Malayalam movie grandmother who doesn't behave like the usual Malayalam movie grandmothers!" I also liked how Anjana Jayaprakash doesn't make her character Hamsadhawni sound like a woman from a Mills & Boon novel.
Nowadays, I get instantly sceptical about any Malayalam movie with a three (or near) hour duration -- unless, of course, it's an epic with a visual scope and competent storytelling that demands it. Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum demands it. It's structured like a lighthearted novel, with characters expressing believable emotions and concerns. Is the template original? Not quite. There are places where Akhil's experience with documentaries lends a sense of authenticity to the way locations like Mumbai and Goa are depicted. There are places where it aspires to be a fairytale. But I'm not complaining. I went in expecting a wholesome, but not too syrupy, experience that would leave a smile on my face, and that's exactly what I got.

Conversely, a few dialogues in the movie seem to be dragged out needlessly and become a hindrance to the audience's enjoyment. It's worth noting that this isn't one of those deliberately slow-burn movies. If the creators had wanted to, they could have made Pachuvum Athbutha Vilakkum much more concise and effective.

Review: The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Akhil Sathyan's Pachuvum Albhuthavilakkum is very much from the Sathyan Anthikad school of filmmaking.
