Carry out your research with one of the UK’s leading English Language departments, renowned for its expertise in Corpus Research, Cognitive Linguistics and Psycholinguistics, and Discourse Analysis and Stylistics, from anywhere in the world.

We offer both and campus-based and distance learning PhD courses. There are two distance learning PhD programmes in English Language and Applied Linguistics: a standard programme and a modular programme. There is no assessed taught component, but students follow online research training modules. Both distance learning options are part-time, while the campus programme can be either full-time or part-time.

All programmes have regular contact with your supervisor. On the distance learning programmes, this contact is by email and/or video conference and allow you to remain in your resident country while pursuing your research. This is particularly beneficial if you are interested in relating your research to your current work.

The Standard PhD

The standard programme requires a traditional 80,000-word thesis. The work is examined at the end of the programme, as with other PhD programmes. Students identify and refine a thesis topic and research design in consultation with their supervisor and send drafts of the various chapters for comment as they work through the programme. As with all PhDs, progress is monitored throughout the registration period.

Distance Modular PhD

The modular programme requires three modules: two shorter research papers (Module 1 - 12,000 words, Module 2 - 20,000 words) and a final thesis of 50,000 words (Module 3). The work is examined in three phases, at the end of each module. The final product (in terms of total quantity and quality of work) is therefore similar to the standard PhD; however the modular option provides an incremental, continuously assessed route allowing students to progress through explicitly marked stages to a PhD. Students identify a topic they wish to work on and to which all their written work should be related; the nature of the assessment means however that the topic may not be as tightly focused as that in a traditional PhD.

phd in english distance learning

We rank the best online PhD degree programs in English.

Key Takeaways

  • Students seeking a PhD in English can choose from a small selection of online English doctoral programs.
  • Online English PhD graduates typically work in areas like post-secondary education, language research, publishing.
  • Online English PhD programs come in concentrations like American literature, technology and media studies, literary theory, and more.

Featured Programs

The online English PhD program is ideal for working professionals and graduate students with a deep interest in English literature, comparative literature, creative writing, English language learning education, literacy education, and more. However, only a select number of universities offer a full selection of English PhD programs online.

The online English doctoral degree is considered a terminal degree, which means it is the highest degree that you can earn in your field. This means that online doctoral programs for PhD students in English can lead to opportunities for teaching English at the post-secondary level, participating in advanced humanities research, or providing public consultation on critical literacy and learning issues.

Online PhD in English candidates are typically already working at a high level in their field. This means that students seeking their doctorate must balance existing work and personal responsibilities with a challenging course of education. For many graduate students, online courses and fully online programs provide a way to achieve this balance.

Happy students in a classroom

The best online PhD in English programs will have proper accreditation. Be sure that you are pursuing your PhD in English through a fully accredited university and program:

  • Institutional Accreditation : Accreditation is vital for online doctoral programs. It signifies that the online PhD programs offered by the online school are in compliance with the standards of a Department of Education-approved accrediting body.

A school must also be accredited in order to offer federal financial aid to its online doctorate candidates. When looking for an online doctoral program, seek out options with accreditation from a colleges and schools commission in your region. This stamp of approval is critical for ensuring the quality and credibility of your online program.

  • Programmatic Accreditation : In addition to institutional accreditation, be sure that you prioritize online doctorate degree programs with programmatic accreditation. While there is no specifically required programmatic accreditation for the general field of English, those who intend to work in post-secondary educational institutions may be required to complete a doctoral program with accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Make sure that your online English PhD program offers the proper programmatic accreditation requirements for your career goals.
  • Carnegie Classification : The Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, or as it is more commonly known, the Carnegie Classification, is a framework for categorizing all accredited, degree-granting institutions in the United States. Originally formulated in 1970 by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, and administered through the University of Indiana’s Center for Postsecondary Research since 2014, the Carnegie Classification is “the leading framework for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in U.S. higher education.”

Under this classification, top research universities for doctoral degrees and PhD candidates are identified as either R2: Doctoral Universities for “high research activity” or R1: Doctoral Universities for “very high research activity.” Look for these classifications when considering options for your online Phd programs.

Key Point: Be sure that you only consider an online English PhD program with proper accreditation.

Doctoral Program Admission Requirements

Schools that offer online English PhD programs have different admission requirements. However, most online doctoral programs will carry the same basic threshold for admission:

  • A completed online application
  • Official transcripts
  • A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
  • GRE scores, MAT scores, or GMAT scores
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interviews
  • Personal statement or writing sample
  • Plan of study

Key Point: In most cases, you will be eligible to enter a doctoral degree online after earning only a bachelor’s degree. However, some specialized online English Degree programs may require you to have earned a master’s degree as well.

Curriculum and Courses For English Graduate Students

As with other advanced degree and graduate programs, research is the central component of your online PhD in English program. This is true for fully online doctorate degrees as well as hybrid degrees combining online education with traditional on-campus courses. Regardless of whether you complete a traditional, hybrid or online doctoral program, the typical time to completion is five to seven years.

The typical components of your online English PhD program may include:

Foundational Courses

Your English PhD will typically begin with foundational courses in your area of concentration. Concentrations may include:

  • English literature
  • British literature
  • Creative writing
  • Critical literacy training
  • Literary and cultural studies

Some of your courses will focus on research methods and experimental design. You may be able to complete many of these requirements through online classes. Your English graduate program may also include a foreign language requirement.

Examinations for PhD Candidacy

Many online doctoral students are required to complete certain examinations to enter into online PhD candidacy. This will typically occur after you’ve completed one to two years of foundational courses.

Dissertation

In most cases, the central component of your online PhD program will be the completion of your dissertation. After gaining status as an online PhD candidate, you will typically work closely with a professorial advisor or mentor to develop an original scholarly research question.

This research question will form the basis of your dissertation—an ongoing project designed to address this research question through applied research. While you will work closely with your advisor or mentor, much of your dissertation will be rooted in independent research. This is especially true for students pursuing an online PhD.

Oral Defense

Upon completion of the written portion of your dissertation—which will typically present the findings from your original research project—you will be expected to defend your findings. This “oral defense” will typically be conducted by a commission of professors and experts in your field. PhD candidates in some online degree programs may be able to conduct this defense via teleconferencing.

Teaching Requirements

Some online Ph.D programs will also include a teaching component, which will require you to work as an adjunct professor or teaching assistant in an undergraduate or graduate school. It may be possible for students in the online doctoral degree program to also serve teaching requirements through distance learning.

Key Point: Completion and defense of your dissertation will be a central part of completing your online doctoral degree program in English.

Careers for English Online Doctoral Students

The online PhD in English is a terminal degree program. This means that PhD students who complete this online program will qualify for top positions and opportunities in their field.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that you may be able to qualify for work as an English teacher with a master’s degree in English. However, the highest paying careers in English are generally held by those working in post-secondary education. The BLS notes that the highest paid 10% of professionals in the English field earned more than $132,000 in 2021.

Earning an online PhD in English can lead to some of these top-paying roles in the field, including:

  • Critical Literacy Policy Development
  • Education Policy Consultation
  • Post-Secondary Literature Education
  • Education Department Chairmanship

Key Point: According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, English professionals with a doctorate will earn more than graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree.

What’s the difference between online doctoral programs and online PhD programs?

Technically, a PhD is a type of doctorate degree. This means that all online PhD candidates are doctoral students. By contrast, not all doctoral students are PhD candidates.

The primary distinction is that doctoral students are primarily focused on putting existing theories into practice. Depending on your chosen field, your online doctoral degree may require participation in an educational leadership program, engagement in clinical practice, work as a resident in a nursing program, and much more.

By contrast, online PhD students are focused on creating new knowledge in their area of study. This usually means that online PhD candidates are focused on introducing new theories, creating research projects around these theories, and presenting new findings that demonstrate a mastery of existing knowledge and the insight to introduce new ideas into the field.

Today, more working professionals than ever before are pursuing both online doctoral degrees and online Phd programs.

When you get a Ph.D. in English, you can pursue a career in college teaching. If you aren’t planning to teach, you may still need a Ph.D. for some career options. However, usually, it’s not mandatory.

Investing time and money in a Ph.D. in English is worth it if you want a teaching career. Becoming a college professor comes with numerous benefits. The main one is enjoying what you are doing and having an opportunity to share your knowledge.

How to Get an Online Ph.D. in English

When it comes to requirements, online Ph.D. programs aren’t different from offline learning. Universities that offer online programs usually have Ph.D. programs on campus as well. Some also offer hybrid learning opportunities which allow you to learn part of the program at home and then take some classes on campus.

When you decide to get a Ph.D. in English, consider applying for at least five programs. If you get accepted into all of them, you can have a choice. If some reject your application, you’ll have a chance with others.

To apply for a Ph.D. program, you will need:

Many Ph.D. programs require you to know at least two languages. Find out which languages count before you choose a program. You would also need to demonstrate proficiency in the English language. If you studied outside of the U.S.A. and other English-speaking countries, you may have to take IELTS or TOEFL.

A personal statement is a reflection of your personality and achievements. While you may be tempted to brag about your abilities, the statement should be information-filled and concise. The admissions committee can use this statement to evaluate your ability to write.

This personal statement is an essay that provides a unique opportunity to make an impression. If your GPA and other scores aren’t as good as the school requires, a personal statement can make up for what you lack in scores.

Admissions experts use this statement to evaluate your strength and weaknesses. They figure out what sets you apart from other candidates, explore your interests and hobbies, and much more.

Another requirement for enrollment into the Ph.D. program is an academic writing sample. When choosing a sample for admissions purposes, try to select one that reflects the work you want to be doing during your graduate program.

The sample should be academic in nature and demonstrate your ability to bring innovation into the field. Keep in mind that different graduate programs may have different requirements for the academic sample.

Read the instructions carefully before submitting.

The majority of PhD programs require a master’s degree to enroll. In some cases, a school may accept a student with a bachelor’s degree. The degree has to be earned in the same university or in another accredited educational institution.

Many doctoral programs require you to have a good GRE score of above 325. However, for some of them, scores above 300 are sufficient. Many schools don’t have this requirement at all.

Make sure to check this particular requirement since it can vary from school to school. Failing to achieve the required score could hurt your chances of getting into a Ph.D. program.

The majority of universities require a GPA higher than 3.0 to enroll in a Ph.D. program. However, failing to meet this requirement isn’t likely to hurt your chances significantly if you have academic work and experience that speaks for itself.

In fact, if you don’t meet any of the above admissions requirements, it doesn’t mean you can’t be accepted into the school of your choice. However, you should always have a backup plan.

How to Choose the Best Online Ph.D. English Program

Taking the right approach to choosing an online Ph.D. program can improve your chances of acceptance and give you a choice in case some applications are rejected. Here are a few things to consider when selecting a Ph.D. program in English online.

Depending on the university you choose, the Ph.D. program is likely to require a significant investment. While getting a Ph.D. has a high ROI, covering education expenses can be tough for some students.

Some Ph.D. programs offer funding and support for its students. You may get an offer to teach at the university and get paid during your studies.

Another option is to search for available scholarships.

If you are pressed for funds, you may want to consider getting an offline education. Many universities fund their on-campus doctorate programs for selected students.

Not all universities offer online doctoral programs. While some of them may have such information on their websites, a significant number are hybrid Ph.D. opportunities. This means that you can do a part of your studies online and a part in school. If you are applying for an out-of-state program, you have to consider the costs associated with the move.

Some universities have highly specific Ph.D. programs. Figure out whether the program they offer is the right choice for you.

If you want to make sure that your Ph.D. is sufficient to get a teaching job at a college, you need to get a degree from an accredited university. Accreditation is not a mandatory process. Some universities decide to receive an independent review from an accredited organization to attract students and help them take a step toward their desired career.

The U.S. Department of Education and the Councill for Higher Education Accreditation recognize only a few accreditation organizations.

Getting an accreditation isn’t easy. The university needs to meet stringent standards and requirements. Meanwhile, to hold on to that accreditation, schools must maintain education excellence.

If you choose an accredited university , you can be sure that this school cares for education quality.

People who teach you have the biggest influence on your future career. If the university has a satisfactory program and great academic professionals, it doesn’t always mean that the faculty is ready to go the extra mile to help you achieve your goals.

If the school you apply to has professors who work in your chosen field, they can show you exactly what needs to be done to succeed. These people can become your mentors and help you achieve your career goals.

Take the time to research the faculty and their credentials. You may also want to speak to alumni of the school you choose and get some feedback. You can usually find alumni in university Facebook groups.

When you get a Ph.D. online, it can be hard to navigate the school’s requirements and policies. Without actually visiting the university, you could be lost in the sea of information.

Universities with the best online Ph.D. programs understand the need for extra support. They create student resources that can help with adaptation. Meanwhile, they offer sufficient resources for writing and academic research.

Find out what type of support the university has for Ph.D. students. Figure out whether they are readily accessible online.

Many students mistakenly believe that the online format automatically means learning flexibility. In reality, not all programs that offer online learning have flexible studying hours. You may be dependent on the school’s offline schedule and the faculty’s ability to work with your needs.

If you already have a full-time job and have to work around it to study, find out if this option is available at the university of your choice. Do you have to attend daily lectures in zoom format? Does the academic staff set convenient consultation hours?

If you are ready to juggle work and studies, you need to make sure that the school supports your schedule.

While getting an online doctoral degree may seem to be a convenient way to accommodate your needs, it’s not always the case. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of the online program to figure out whether it can help you achieve your goals.

An online program involves being in a digital classroom with the faculty. The key difference between an online and an offline program is the location of the learning process. If you are looking for flexibility and free time, it’s not always possible with online learning. You are expected to work as if you were on campus.

An alternative option is distance learning. Unlike online learning, distance learning doesn’t require you to be present in a virtual classroom. The faculty assigns the necessary work, and you do it at your own pace at home.

Some students who have full-time jobs may be better off choosing distance learning instead of online learning. The downside of distance learning is the lack of stringent faculty control. The student chooses their own pace for what essentially is self-learning. This may not be suitable for everyone.

Online learning is a great option for people who are ready to dedicate a lot of time to get a doctoral degree but can’t attend the university physically. Reasons usually vary from health problems to location issues.

PhD English Research Programme (including Creative Writing) (Q300)

We offer PhD supervision in English; in Creative Writing; and in interdisciplinary work between English, Creative Writing and other subjects. Our postgraduate students are an essential part of the English and Humanities research communities at Southampton.

The programme is also available via distance learning, which is designed for people who wish to study without travelling to Southampton regularly.

Introducing your degree

Earn a doctorate in English Literature or Creative Writing through our PhD Research Programmes .

In English literature, we supervise work on literature from the 14th to the 21st century, as well as transhistorical and interdisciplinary projects.  We support projects on individual authors and established literary epochs, as well as cutting edge work that expands the meaning of ‘literature’ and redefines ‘culture’. We encourage work that brings the study of literature into conversation with the visual arts, philosophy, music, history, politics, law, economics, and science. We are experienced in supervising work on literatures from across the world, including comparative literature projects.

In Creative Writing, students draw upon the expert support of our Creative Writing supervisors to write new creative works of fiction. Their projects may be a collection of short stories or a novel; narrative non-fiction; works for children or young people; or poetry. This book-length project is written in conjunction with a piece of research that explores the critical considerations needed to deepen and put into context the creative project. Usually, the critical component is co-supervised by an English literature colleague with an expertise in a relevant area.

Please browse our  staff pages for individual areas of expertise in supervising critical and creative projects.

Programme Overview

As a research student, you will have access to a wide range of facilities. These include a Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Culture ; a Centre for Eighteenth Century Studies ; a Centre for Nineteenth Century Research ; a  Centre for Modern and Contemporary Writing and a range of Research Institutes , including the  Parkes Institute , the  Southampton Institute for Arts and Humanities and Chawton House . You will also have access to a rich range of opportunities, including involvement in seminar series and regular formal training events to provide you with the wisdom and capabilities to complete your project, enhance your CV, and prepare you for your chosen career.

A PhD in English or Creative Writing from Southampton has helped our graduates to establish careers in academic research; publishing; local, national and international policy work; teaching in college and Higher Education; project design and management; and in a wide variety of roles as writers and researchers in diverse media organisations.

Writing your PhD Proposal

It takes time and care to complete a PhD proposal that meets the standards required for a higher degree. It is important to demonstrate that you fully understand what a PhD entails before you submit your application.

A PhD in English Literature

You need to research and summarise previous criticism on your chosen topic; clearly state your aims, research questions and argument; explain why the work will be distinctive, original and meaningful; justify the choice of texts and the historical/geographical scope of the thesis; explain your methods; and include a chapter-by-chapter synopsis that is feasible within 75,000 words. You should also include a bibliography.  A PhD in Creative Writing    The Creative Writing pathway offers the opportunity to work with a creative writer on a book-length work of fiction, narrative non-fiction or poetry. The accompanying critical commentary allows exploration of an area of research connected to that creative work, usually with a critical supervisor. The length of a dissertation in the Creative Writing pathway varies according to form and genre.    Please find a guide to preparing an  application for a PhD in the School of Humanities at Southampton here .

PhD Program in English Language and Literature

The department enrolls an average of ten PhD students each year. Our small size allows us to offer a generous financial support package. We also offer a large and diverse graduate faculty with competence in a wide range of literary, theoretical and cultural fields. Each student chooses a special committee that works closely along side the student to design a course of study within the very broad framework established by the department. The program is extremely flexible in regard to course selection, the design of examinations and the election of minor subjects of concentration outside the department. English PhD students pursuing interdisciplinary research may include on their special committees faculty members from related fields such as comparative literature, medieval studies, Romance studies, German studies, history, classics, women’s studies, linguistics, theatre and performing arts, government, philosophy, and film and video studies.

The PhD candidate is normally expected to complete six or seven one-semester courses for credit in the first year of residence and a total of six or seven more in the second and third years. The program of any doctoral candidate’s formal and informal study, whatever his or her particular interests, should be comprehensive enough to ensure familiarity with:

  • The authors and works that have been the most influential in determining the course of English, American, and related literatures
  • The theory and criticism of literature, and the relations between literature and other disciplines
  • Concerns and tools of literary and cultural history such as textual criticism, study of genre, source, and influence as well as wider issues of cultural production and historical and social contexts that bear on literature

Areas in which students may have major or minor concentrations include African-American literature, American literature to 1865, American literature after 1865, American studies (a joint program with the field of history), colonial and postcolonial literatures, cultural studies, dramatic literature, English poetry, the English Renaissance to 1660, lesbian, bisexual and gay literary studies, literary criticism and theory, the nineteenth century, Old and Middle English, prose fiction, the Restoration and the eighteenth century, the twentieth century, and women's literature.

By the time a doctoral candidate enters the fourth semester of graduate study, the special committee must decide whether he or she is qualified to proceed toward the PhD. Students are required to pass their Advancement to Candidacy Examination before their fourth year of study, prior to the dissertation.

PhD Program specifics can be viewed here: PhD Timeline PhD Procedural Guide

Special Committee

Every graduate student selects a special committee of faculty advisors who work intensively with the student in selecting courses and preparing and revising the dissertation. The committee is comprised of at least three Cornell faculty members: a chair, and typically two minor members usually from the English department, but very often representing an interdisciplinary field. The university system of special committees allows students to design their own courses of study within a broad framework established by the department, and it encourages a close working relationship between professors and students, promoting freedom and flexibility in the pursuit of the graduate degree. The special committee for each student guides and supervises all academic work and assesses progress in a series of meetings with the students.

At Cornell, teaching is considered an integral part of training in academia. The field requires a carefully supervised teaching experience of at least one year for every doctoral candidate as part of the program requirements. The Department of English, in conjunction with the  John S. Knight Institute for Writing  in the Disciplines, offers excellent training for beginning teachers and varied and interesting teaching in the university-wide First-Year Writing Program. The courses are writing-intensive and may fall under such general rubrics as “Portraits of the Self,” “American Literature and Culture,” “Shakespeare,” and “Cultural Studies,” among others. A graduate student may also serve as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate lecture course taught by a member of the Department of English faculty.

Language Requirements

Each student and special committee will decide what work in foreign language is most appropriate for a student’s graduate program and scholarly interests. Some students’ doctoral programs require extensive knowledge of a single foreign language and literature; others require reading ability in two or more foreign languages. A student may be asked to demonstrate competence in foreign languages by presenting the undergraduate record, taking additional courses in foreign languages and literature, or translating and discussing documents related to the student’s work. Students are also normally expected to provide evidence of having studied the English language through courses in Old English, the history of the English language, grammatical analysis or the application of linguistic study to metrics or to literary criticism. Several departments at Cornell offer pertinent courses in such subjects as descriptive linguistics, psycholinguistics and the philosophy of language.

All PhD degree candidates are guaranteed five years of funding (including a stipend , a full tuition fellowship and student health insurance):

  • A first-year non-teaching fellowship
  • Two years of teaching assistantships
  • A fourth-year non-teaching fellowship for the dissertation writing year
  • A fifth-year teaching assistantship
  • Summer support for four years, including a first-year summer teaching assistantship, linked to a teachers’ training program at the Knight Institute. Summer residency in Ithaca is required.

Students have also successfully competed for Buttrick-Crippen Fellowship, Society for the Humanities Fellowships, American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), Shin Yong-Jin Graduate Fellowships, Provost’s Diversity Fellowships, fellowships in recognition of excellence in teaching, and grants from the Graduate School to help with the cost of travel to scholarly conferences and research collections.

Admission & Application Procedures

The application for Fall 2024 admission will open on September 15, 2023 and close at 11:59pm EST on December 1, 2023.

Our application process reflects the field’s commitment to considering the whole person and their potential to contribute to our scholarly community.  Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of academic preparation (e.g., performance in relevant courses, completion of substantive, independent research project). An applicant’s critical and creative potential will be considered: applicants should demonstrate interest in extensive research and writing and include a writing sample that reveals a capacity to argue persuasively, demonstrate the ability to synthesize a broad range of materials, as well as offer fresh insights into a problem or text. The committee will also consider whether an applicant demonstrates a commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity and offers a substantive explanation for why study at Cornell is especially compelling (e.g., a discussion of faculty research and foci). Admissions committees will consider the entire application carefully, including statements and critical writing, as well as transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a resume/cv (if provided). Please view the requirements and procedures listed below, if you are interested in being considered for our PhD in English Language and Literature program.

Eligibility: Applicants must currently have, or expect to have, at least a BA or BS (or the equivalent) in any field before matriculation. International students, please verify degree equivalency here . Applicants are not required to meet a specified GPA minimum.

To Apply: All applications and supplemental materials must be submitted online through the Graduate School application system . While completing your application, you may save and edit your data. Once you click submit, your application will be closed for changes. Please proofread your materials carefully. Once you pay and click submit, you will not be able to make any changes or revisions.

Deadline: December 1st, 11:59pm EST.  This deadline is firm. No applications, additional materials, or revisions will be accepted after the deadline.

PhD Program Application Requirements Checklist

  • Academic Statement of Purpose Please describe (within 1000 words) in detail the substantive research questions you are interested in pursuing during your graduate studies and why they are significant. Additionally, make sure to include information about any training or research experience that you believe has prepared you for our program. You should also identify specific faculty members whose research interests align with your own specific questions.  Note that the identification of faculty is important; you would be well advised to read selected faculty’s recent scholarship so that you can explain why you wish to study with them. Do not rely on the courses they teach.  Please refrain from contacting individual faculty prior to receiving an offer of admission.
  • Personal Statement Please describe (within 1000 words) how your personal background and experiences influenced your decision to pursue a graduate degree and the research you wish to conduct.  Explain, for example the meaning and purpose of the PhD in the context of your personal history and future aspirations.  Please note that we will pay additional attention to candidates who identify substantial reasons to obtain a PhD beyond the pursuit of an academic position. Additionally, provide insight into your potential to contribute to a community of inclusion, belonging, and respect where scholars representing diverse backgrounds, perspectives, abilities, and experiences can learn (productively and positively) together.
  • Critical Writing Sample Your academic writing sample must be between 3,000 and 7,500 words (12-30 pages), typed and double-spaced. We accept excerpts from longer works, or a combination of shorter works.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation We require 3 letters of recommendation.  At the time of application, you will be allowed to enter up to 4 recommenders in the system.  Your application will be considered “Complete” when we have received at least 3 letters of recommendation.   Letters of recommendation are due December 1 . Please select three people who best know you and your work. Submitting additional letters will not enhance your application. In the recommendation section of the application, you must include the email address of each recommender. After you save the information (and before you pay/submit), the application system will automatically generate a recommendation request email to your recommender with instructions for submitting the letter electronically. If your letters are stored with a credential service such as Interfolio, please use their Online Application Delivery feature and input the email address assigned to your stored document, rather than that of your recommender’s. The electronic files will be attached to your application when they are received and will not require the letter of recommendation cover page.
  • Transcripts Scan transcripts from each institution you have attended, or are currently attending, and upload into the academic information section of the application. Be sure to remove your social security number from all documents prior to scanning. Please do not send paper copies of your transcripts. If you are subsequently admitted and accept, the Graduate School will require an official paper transcript from your degree-awarding institution prior to matriculation.
  • English Language Proficiency Requirement All applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency. For more information, please view the  Graduate School’s English Language Requirement .
  • GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test are NO LONGER REQUIRED, effective starting with the 2019 application In March 2019, the faculty of English voted overwhelmingly to eliminate all GRE requirements (both general and subject test) for application to the PhD program in English. GRE scores are not good predictors of success or failure in a PhD program in English, and the uncertain predictive value of the GRE exam is far outweighed by the toll it takes on student diversity. For many applicants the cost of preparing for and taking the exam is prohibitively expensive, and the exam is not globally accessible. Requiring the exam narrows our applicant pool at precisely the moment we should be creating bigger pipelines into higher education. We need the strength of a diverse community in order to pursue the English Department’s larger mission: to direct the force of language toward large and small acts of learning, alliance, imagination, and justice.

General Information for All Applicants

Application Fee: Visit the Graduate School for information regarding application fees, payment options, and fee waivers .

Document Identification: Please do not put your social security number on any documents.

Status Inquiries:  Once you submit your application, you will receive a confirmation email. You will also be able to check the completion status of your application in your account. If vital sections of your application are missing, we will notify you via email after the Dec. 1 deadline and allow you ample time to provide the missing materials. Please do not inquire about the status of your application.

Credential/Application Assessments:  The Admission Review Committee members are unable to review application materials or applicant credentials prior to official application submission. Once the committee has reviewed applications and made admissions decisions, they will not discuss the results or make any recommendations for improving the strength of an applicant’s credentials. Applicants looking for feedback are advised to consult with their undergraduate advisor or someone else who knows them and their work.

Review Process:  Application review begins after the submission deadline. Notification of admissions decisions will be made by email by the end of February.

Connecting with Faculty and/or Students: Unfortunately, due to the volume of inquiries we receive, faculty and current students are not available to correspond with potential applicants prior to an offer of admission. Applicants who are offered admission will have the opportunity to meet faculty and students to have their questions answered prior to accepting. Staff and faculty are also not able to pre-assess potential applicant’s work outside of the formal application process. Please email [email protected] instead, if you have questions.

Visiting: The department does not offer pre-admission visits or interviews. Admitted applicants will be invited to visit the department, attend graduate seminars and meet with faculty and students before making the decision to enroll.

Transfer Credits:  Students matriculating with an MA degree may, at the discretion of the Director of Graduate Studies, receive credit for up to two courses once they begin our program.

A Ph.D., or doctor of philosophy, is the highest level of academic degree that you can attain. Consisting primarily of research, a Ph.D. prepares you for a career in academia or research in the field you study.

Students who choose to pursue a Ph.D. online will find it can be completed in less time. Online students also get the added benefit of being able to complete their work from the comfort of home. The overall cost may also be less compared to an in-person program.

We've compiled a list of the best accredited online Ph.D. programs to help you start your search.

Are Online Ph.D. Programs Worth It?

An online Ph.D. program is an ideal choice if you want to balance your career and family responsibilities along with your education.

While there are some preconceived notions that online programs aren't legitimate, as long as the program you choose is accredited, the degree is the same as one earned in person.

While the annual tuition cost to earn a Ph.D. online averages $12,394 for a public institution and $26,621 for a private university, doctoral graduates enjoy a lower unemployment rate and higher weekly salary than those with less education, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)

Did You Know...

  • According to the BLS , workers with a doctoral degree earned a median of $651 more per week than workers with a bachelor's degree in 2022.
  • Doctorate-holders boast some of the lowest unemployment rates at 1%.
  • In 2019, research found that 39.8% of graduate students were enrolled in online learning.
  • The number of doctorates awarded between 2020 and 2021 dropped by 5.4%.
  • Not all Ph.D.-holders end up working in academia.

How We Rank Schools

Accredited Schools Online uses a custom ranking system to evaluate schools on their quality, affordability, and reputation.

We rank schools using factors like graduation rate, admission rate, tuition costs, financial aid, and program offerings. All our ranked schools hold institutional accreditation .

For this page, we created a directory of online accredited Ph.D. programs that meet our criteria. The list is organized alphabetically rather than ranked.

Learn more about how we create school rankings on our methodology page .

Does Accreditation Matter for Online Ph.D. Programs?

A college is accredited after being recognized by an independent institution that verifies the school's courses and programs meet set quality standards.

The school you choose must be accredited in order for your Ph.D. to be recognized by employers , earn professional licensures, and qualify you for federal financial aid.

Legitimate accreditors are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

How Much Does an Online Ph.D. Cost?

In general, you can expect to pay around $13,000-$30,000 per year in tuition and fees for your online Ph.D.

Several factors affect how much your Ph.D. program will cost, including:

  • Whether the program is fully funded
  • Whether your school is public or private
  • Whether you're an in-state or out-of-state student
  • How long your program lasts (most Ph.D. programs take 5-7 years to complete)
  • How much financial aid you get

While many in-person and online doctoral programs in the U.S. are fully funded, these tend to be highly competitive.

One way to save money on your online Ph.D. is to attend a program that offers in-state tuition to residents. Make sure you submit the FAFSA each year so you can secure federal financial aid .

You may also need to budget for occasional travel to and from campus and research sites, especially as you work on your dissertation.

What's the Difference Between a Ph.D. and a Doctorate?

While a Ph.D. and a doctoral degree, or doctorate, both signify the same level of education completed, their uses are different.

Doctorate is the broader term — a Ph.D. is a type of doctorate. Specifically, a Ph.D. is an academic degree that prepares you for a career in research or teaching in your field of study (such as science, English, or economics).

Besides a Ph.D., other types of doctorates include a doctor of medicine (MD), a doctor of education (Ed.D.), and a doctor of psychology (Psy.D.). These degrees are typically used in either an academic or professional setting.

Online Ph.D. Programs That Don't Require a Dissertation

A dissertation is a final written project culminating in a student's original research at the end of their Ph.D. program. A dissertation is typically presented and defended by its author. It's typically required for degrees with an academic or research focus.

Not all Ph.D. programs require a dissertation. For example, some Ph.D. programs in humanities, education, business administration, and criminal justice require simple or no dissertations for a quicker completion time .

What Jobs Can You Get After Earning an Online Ph.D.?

Once you finish your online doctoral program, you can explore a variety of career paths both within and outside academia.

Many Ph.D. graduates, especially those who studied the humanities, go on to become professors. Other popular roles include administrator, scientist, and psychologist.

Graduates of online Ph.D. programs earn a relatively high average base salary of $105,000 a year, according to Payscale .

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Ph.D. Programs

  • Collapse All

What is the quickest Ph.D. to get?

The quickest Ph.D. to earn are those that award professional degrees and don't require extensive research projects or dissertations at completion. These Ph.D. programs can include accounting, business, education, and media.

To finish your degree faster, you can also look for accelerated programs that quicken the pace of a program and shorten the time it takes to complete.

Are online doctoral programs legit?

If the online doctoral program is accredited, it is legitimate. Accreditation ensures that the program meets the rigorous educational standards of other comparative doctoral programs.

With accreditation, employers and other institutions of higher learning will recognize your degree. As more universities turn toward online programs to serve a more diverse student population, there are a growing number of legitimate, accredited online Ph.D. programs.

How long are online Ph.D. programs?

Online Ph.D. programs, like any other doctoral program, can vary in length but typically take 5-7 years to complete. A doctoral degree balances coursework with research. Usually, students must meet a certain number of course requirements before they can start original research.

While coursework may take only a year or two, writing a dissertation that meets the program requirements varies from candidate to candidate.

Can I earn my Ph.D. entirely online?

Yes, many accredited colleges and universities offer 100% online Ph.D. programs. That said, some programs may require on-campus experiences, such as library research and a dissertation defense.

What do employers think of online doctoral programs?

It takes a high level of discipline and persistence to obtain a graduate degree, no matter the context. Most employers will recognize and value the hard work it takes to get a Ph.D., whether you completed your doctorate online or in person.

Make sure you research potential programs. If you're attending an accredited, well-regarded school, employers will value your online Ph.D. just as much as a traditional one.

The UNC School of Education’s program for aspiring leaders across sectors will host its first cohort of students in fall 2024.

UNC School of Education exterior in the daytime.

With approval from the UNC System, the UNC School of Education has launched the University’s first fully online doctoral degree program — the Doctor of Education in organizational learning and leadership.

The program was created and delivered in collaboration with The Graduate School at UNC-Chapel Hill, the UNC Office of Digital and Lifelong Learning and 2U. It will provide working professionals with knowledge, skills and experiences to take a human-centered approach to leadership, delivering upon their organization’s goals and mission.

Applications are open as of March 20, and the program’s first cohort of students will begin classes in fall 2024.

“For more than 130 years, the UNC School of Education has prepared leaders for classrooms, schools and school districts but also institutions well beyond education,” said Fouad Abd-El-Khalick, education dean and Alumni Distinguished Professor. “Education happens lifelong and lifewide, and learning happens within successful organizations. Our faculty members have expertise in areas critical to organizational learning and leadership, and we believe this program is an incredible opportunity for professionals to advance their careers and organizations.”

Developed with input from working professionals in both private and public sectors and spanning various industries, the new doctoral program is tailored to equip students with specialized courses in improvement science, change leadership, human-centered design, equitable and inclusive practice, research methodology and more. It will also offer students practical opportunities to implement their learning directly into their professional endeavors.

The program will use a blend of interactive online classes, self-paced asynchronous lessons, and an in-person immersion experience on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus. During the immersion experience, students will have the chance to forge meaningful connections with faculty, staff and fellow students.

The program culminates with a capstone project in which students identify a complex or pervasive challenge faced by their organization. Students will then undertake comprehensive research and implementation efforts to address it and design effective resolutions.

“Our faculty members have intentionally shaped this program and designed its curriculum to prepare professionals with tools to provide immediate value for our students, for the teams they lead or are part of, and for their organizations,” said Thurston Domina, associate dean for academic affairs and director of graduate studies at the school. “When our students graduate, we anticipate they will find success in private companies, government and nonprofit organizations, business and management consulting, human resources, project management, leadership coaching or development, and more.”

“Leadership of teams and organizations is a complex endeavor,” said Warren, “and we are excited to welcome students from an array of career stages, roles, organizations and locations who are committed to that endeavor. I look forward to cultivating robust learning environments where our students and equally committed and expert faculty members engage in ways that ultimately work toward the greater good through human-centered leadership practice.”

Prospective students can begin the online application at online.unc.edu . The priority deadline for the first cohort of students is June 11, while the final deadline is July 3. Details about application requirements are available online or by contacting an admissions counselor.

A PhD Student’s Resilience: Defying Signal Challenges for Online Learning

phd in english distance learning

By Genevieve Balance Kupang

Though International Women’s Month (March) has just come to a close, I would like to greet and celebrate the inspiring women who contribute, persevere, and achieve something for humanity every day! Here is to honoring and uplifting women everywhere!

As a facilitator of adult learning, there’s a constant joy in serving as an educator. In the narrative I’m about to share, however, the tables were turned. While I believed I was imparting knowledge, skill, and values, I became the student. As someone who thrives on learning life’s lessons, I’m humbled by the example set by my graduate student, an awarded educator and leader, Agustina B. Cayat. She is a student of Doctor of Philosophy in Administration and Supervision. The images before you are a powerful illustration of her relentless pursuit of knowledge. Her dedication, fueled by unwavering grit, is truly remarkable. Let’s raise a toast to Agustina, a shining example of perseverance! She joined our class and after two hours, she said “Due to a low battery, I might not be able to finish the class session with you until 8:00 PM.  Instead of joining you from home, I’m currently on a mountain slope in Itogon.” Touched by the images she sent, my creative juices penned this article.

In the bosom of the Cordillera mountain range, amidst forestry terrain and pristine landscape, lies a testament to the unyielding dedication of today’s scholars. Here, where the air is crisp and the silence profound, a lone figure sits against the backdrop of nature’s majesty, her laptop glowing softly in the nautical twilight and approaching nightfall.

Agustina’s Uphill Climb  As A Determined PhD Student

As the mode of classes is a combination of face-to-face and online sessions, every other Saturday, Agustina, a Ph.D. student brimming with determination, faces a unique challenge: attending her 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM online class. As the late afternoon sun dips below the horizon, she embarks on a short, but purposeful, trek. Her destination: the mountain slope, the only place with a strong enough signal to connect.

By the end of her session, the flickering flames of a bonfire illuminate not just the mountainside, but also Agustina’s online classroom, a testament to her unwavering spirit and resourcefulness.

Yes, as the world around her fades into darkness, Agustina remains steadfast in her pursuit of knowledge. Despite the obstacles posed by unreliable connectivity and the absence of modern conveniences, she perseveres, driven by a passion for learning that knows no bounds.

For Agustina, every online class becomes an adventure—an opportunity to defy the limitations imposed by her remote location. Yet, amidst the challenges, there is a sense of tranquility—an appreciation for the simplicity of life in its purest form. As Agustina gazes into the distance, enveloped by the warmth of the bonfire and the invigorating embrace of the mountain air, she finds solace in the knowledge that her efforts are not in vain.

Agustina’s story is but one example of the resilience and dedication exhibited by countless remote learners around the world. In the face of adversity, they sit or stand tall, their spirits unbroken, their thirst for knowledge unquenchable.

So, the next time you find yourself struggling with a poor internet connection or the distractions of everyday life, take a moment to reflect on the perseverance of graduate students like Agustina. For in their journey lies a lesson—a reminder that with determination and resilience, anything is possible, amidst the solitude of the hill and mountain.
