Doing a presentation in class can be intimidating, but it does not have to be. This wikiHow will give you lots of pointers on how to do a presentation in class with minimal stress.
Planning the Presentation
- Write down keywords or main ideas. If you need to consult your index cards, you're only going to want to scan the index card for information, not read every last word.
- Most of the time, the act of putting information down on your index cards will help you remember the information. So, while you might not strictly need the note cards, it's a nice security blanket to have if you happen to forget what you were going to say.
- You don't want to be reading straight off your notecards during your presentation.
- Practice in front of your family or friends, or in front of the mirror, when you rehearse your presentation. It's probably better to do it in front of friends who you may not know well, as this will help you replicate the feeling of being in front of the class.
- Ask your friends for feedback after you finish your presentation. Was the presentation long enough? How was your eye contact? Did you stammer at all? Were all the points clearly made?
- Make a critique of your practice performance. Challenge yourself to work on all the things that you believe you can improve during the real presentation. When it comes time to deliver the real deal, you'll feel confident knowing that you've worked extra hard on what was toughest for you.
- Get quotes from reliable sources. Good quotes make a good presentation great. Taking what smart people have said and putting it into your presentation not only makes you look smart, it shows the teacher that you spent time thinking about what other people said.
- Make sure your sources are trustworthy. There's nothing that can quite break your confidence like a fact that turns out to not be a fact. Don't always trust the information you get off the Internet.
Delivering the Presentation
- Studies have shown that smiles are infectious; that means that once you smile, it's hard for everyone else not to smile. So if you want your presentation to go off without a hitch, force yourself to smile. That'll make everyone smile; and maybe those smiles will make you actually smile.
- Think about your intention before you talk to your audience. Do you want to educate, enlighten, or entertain this audience? What is the effect that you want to have on the listener?
- Visualize success before, during, and after your presentation. Be humble about what you do — no need for cockiness — but imagine a successful presentation at all times. Don't let the thought of failure creep into your mind.
- In many ways, your confidence is just as important as the information you're delivering. You don't want to spread misinformation, or skimp on doing your research, but a lot of what you'll be graded on — and what the other students come away with — is going to be your level of confidence. Also if you are confident, you will have a better time exchanging ideas with the class.
- If you need a confidence boost, think big picture. After 10 or 15 minutes, your presentation will be over. What will your presentation matter in the long run? Probably not very much. Try to do the best you can, but if you're getting nervous, remind yourself that there are much more important moments in your life to come.
- Have the goal of looking at every person in the classroom at least once. That way, everyone will feel like you've engaged with them. Plus, you'll look like you know what you're talking about.
- Inflection is the kind of movement that radio DJs put into their voice; it's the ramped-up pitch in your voice when it gets excited. You don't want to sound like you've just seen a lion, but you also don't want to sound like you've just seen a squirrel, either. Vary it up to make the presentation more interesting.
- Tell a story, maybe one with a personal note. Stories are great for history or English presentations. Maybe you can tie your presentation into a little anecdote about a famous historical person?
- Ask a provocative question. Ending with a question is a good way of getting your audience to think about your presentation in an interesting way. Is there a certain conclusion you want them to come to?

Community Q&A
- Have good posture. Don't cross or fold your arms, keep them open. Don't slouch and keep your back straight. [8] X Research source Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
- Don't forget to look at everyone, not just the floor. Don't stare at anyone in particular but 'skim' the class. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 0
- Try not to argue with your audience. This detracts from your presentation. Just tell them they have an interesting point and that you'll check and get back to them. Thanks Helpful 1 Not Helpful 1
- Some people may be so tied up before a presentation that they feel faint and may pass out during their speech. If this describes you, make sure you prepare especially hard and keep your blood sugar up before you present. Thanks Helpful 14 Not Helpful 1
- Don't keep your mobile phone in your pocket or it will interfere with the microphone (if any). Thanks Helpful 13 Not Helpful 6

Teaching with this printout
More ideas to try, related resources.
Oral presentation and speaking are important skills for students to master, especially in the intermediate grades. This oral presentation rubric is designed to fit any topic or subject area. The rubric allows teachers to assess students in several key areas of oral presentation. Students are scored on a scale of 1–4 in three major areas. The first area is Delivery, which includes eye contact, and voice inflection. The second area, Content/Organization, scores students based on their knowledge and understanding of the topic being presented and the overall organization of their presentation. The third area, Enthusiasm/Audience Awareness, assesses students based on their enthusiasm toward the topic and how well they came across to their intended audience. Give students the oral presentation rubric ahead of time so that they know and understand what they will be scored on. Discuss each of the major areas and how they relate to oral presentation.
- After students have completed their oral presentations, ask them to do a self-assessment with the same rubric and hold a conference with them to compare their self-assessment with your own assessment.
- Provide students with several examples of oral presentations before they plan and execute their own presentation. Ask students to evaluate and assess the exemplar presentations using the same rubric.
- Students can do a peer evaluation of oral presentations using this rubric. Students meet in partners or small groups to give each other feedback and explain their scoring.

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers
One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.
Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.
Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:
1. An employee is paid a salary,
2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and
3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.
While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.
The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”
The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.
Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.
The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.
Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.
The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.
We urge workers and employers to visit our website to learn more about the final rule.

Harvard’s Taylor Swift Scholars Have Thoughts on ‘Tortured Poets’
The students taking Harvard University’s class on the singer are studying up. Their final papers are due at the end of the month.
- Share full article
By Madison Malone Kircher
Fans of Taylor Swift often study up for a new album, revisiting the singer’s older works to prepare to analyze lyrics and song titles for secret messages and meanings .
“The Tortured Poets Department” is getting much the same treatment, and perhaps no group of listeners was better prepared than the students at Harvard University currently studying Ms. Swift’s works in an English class devoted entirely to the artist . The undergraduate course, “Taylor Swift and Her World,” is taught by Stephanie Burt, who has her students comparing Ms. Swift’s songs to works by poets and writers including Willa Cather, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth.
On Thursday night, about 50 students from the class gathered in a lecture hall on campus to listen to Ms. Swift’s new album. Mary Pankowski, a 22-year-old senior studying history of art and architecture, wore a cream sweatshirt she bought at Ms. Swift’s Eras tour last year. The group made beaded friendship bracelets to celebrate the new album, she said.
When the clock struck midnight, the classroom erupted into applause, and the analysis began. First, the group listened through the album once without discussing, just taking it all in.
Certain lines, however, immediately caused a stir, said Samantha Wilhoit, a junior studying government — like a reference to the singer Charlie Puth and the scathing lyrics to the song “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” Ms. Wilhoit, 21, said.
A line from the song “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,” in which Ms. Swift sings, “I cry a lot but I am so productive,” also seemed to resonate, Ms. Wilhoit said, laughing.
A smaller group of students, including Ms. Pankowski, stuck it out until the early hours of the morning waiting to see if Ms. Swift would drop additional music. At 2 a.m., they were rewarded with an additional “volume” of 15 tracks called “The Anthology.” Ms. Pankowski said she didn’t go to sleep until hours later.
Speaking with The New York Times together on a video call Friday morning, several students from the class discussed their thoughts on the 31 new songs and brainstormed their final papers, which are due at the end of the month.
“The song ‘Clara Bow’ reminded me of ‘The Song of the Lark,’” Makenna Walko, 19, said, citing the Willa Cather novel that follows the career of an aspiring opera singer, Thea Kronborg. “She’s talking about a girl trying to make it out of her small town and trying to get to Manhattan, and what it’s like to have these big, musical dreams and try to pursue them,” she continued. “That’s a narrative that has shown up a lot in Taylor’s own life, over the course of her own career. In a lot of ways, it’s Taylor’s story, too.”
Lola DeAscentiis, a sophomore, zeroed in on the song “But Daddy I Love Him,” comparing it to the Sylvia Plath poem “Daddy.” She plans to explore the link in her final paper.
“I hesitate to say that the song was anywhere near the genius of Sylvia Plath — no offense to Taylor Swift — but I can definitely see some similarities in the themes, like sadness, depression and mental health,” Ms. DeAscentiis, 20, said. (Ms. DeAscentiis also drew a distinction between being a fan of Ms. Swift and being a devoted Swiftie. She said she identified as the former.)
“The way that Taylor overlays her relationship with the significant other that she’s talking about in the song with the relationship that she has with her father — I think that was very Plath,” she added.
Another student, Ana Paulina Serrano, echoed Ms. DeAscentiis, noting that the class had learned about the genre of confessional poetry. “Is Taylor considered a confessional poet?” Ms. Serrano, a 21-year-old junior majoring in neuroscience, asked the group on the call. In support of her own position, she offered as evidence Ms. Swift’s song “Mastermind,” a track off “Midnights,” in which Ms. Swift reveals herself to have calculated and plotted the outcome of a relationship.
“Sometimes she’s confessing things that we, like, already knew or assumed, but she often seems to feel this need to explicitly tell us,” Ms. Serrano added.
Isabel Levin, a 23-year-old senior studying integrative biology, said she thought Ms. Swift’s delivery on several tracks had a spoken-word quality. She wondered if maybe some of the lyrics had initially begun not as songs but as more traditional poems.
Ms. Swift has said she categorizes her songs by the type of pen she imagines using to write each. A “frivolous, carefree, bouncy” song is a glitter gel pen song, while a fountain pen song might be more “brutally honest,” according to Ms. Swift . Quill pen songs are “all old-fashioned, like you’re a 19th-century poet crafting your next sonnet by candlelight,” she explained during her acceptance speech as songwriter-artist of the decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards in 2022.
And with what implement might Ms. Swift have written “Tortured Poets?”
Quill pen, for sure, Ms. Walko said.

Schar School Students Shine at National Political Science Conference
In this story, request schar school program information, learn more about the schar school.
In a notable showcase of academic excellence and scholarly engagement, students from the Schar School of Policy and Government made a significant impact at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Conference held in Chicago earlier this month. Despite its regional designation, the conference attracted some 5,000 attendees, solidifying its status as a premier national event in the field of political science.
Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.
The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.
The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.
In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.
The Schar School representatives were “professional, poised, curious, and engaging,” said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . “[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.”
As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.

Minnesota Vikings draft picks: Grades for selections in 2024 NFL Draft
The Minnesota Vikings are at an important point heading into the 2024 NFL Draft .
Minnesota's quarterback situation is unsettled after Kirk Cousins left for Atlanta in free agency. The Vikings are among a handful of teams picking in the teens in the first round who could trade up into the top 10 for a quarterback. But is there a quarterback that fits coach Kevin O'Connell?
Here's the Vikings' picks, selections and grades for the 2024 NFL Draft.
PICK TRACKER: NFL Draft 2024: First round picks, live instant grades, trades, tracker, updates
Minnesota Vikings 2024 NFL Draft picks
1st round, no. 10 overall (from ny jets) | jj mccarthy, qb, michigan.
Instant grade: C-plus
Analysis: McCarthy will have to shoulder more of a load once he does play for the Vikings, but I do like that he will be playing for Kevin O'Connell. He's not going to wow with his arm strength and off-script plays, but he's got some ability there. Just how much, we'll find out.
TRADE: Minnesota traded the No. 11 overall pick, a 2024 fourth-round pick and a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Jets for No. 10 and No. 203 overall, per ESPN.
1st round, No. 17 overall (from Jacksonville) | Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama
Instant grade: A
Analysis: I thought Turner being a top-10 pick was a reach, and this point in the first round makes a lot more sense. Turner can turn speed to power off the edge very effectively, but he needs to add more pass-rush moves to be a complete game-wrecker. He has big-money potential.
TRADE: Jacksonville traded the No. 17 overall pick to Minnesota for the No. 23 overall pick, a 2024 fifth-round pick, a 2025 third-round pick and a 2025 fourth-round pick, per ESPN.
4th round, No. 108 overall |
4th round, no. 129 overall (from detroit) |, 5th round, no. 157 overall (from cleveland) |, 5th round, no. 167 overall (from kansas city) |, 6th round, no. 177 overall (from carolina via jacksonville) |, 7th round, no. 230 overall (from atlanta via cleveland and arizona) |, 7th round, no. 232 overall (from denver via san francisco and houston) |.

2025 4-Star Guard to Potentially Visit Michigan State
Jerry Easter, a class of 2025 4-star guard from La Lumiere School, is considering visiting Michigan State.
- Author: Aidan Champion
In this story:
Michigan State men's basketball and Coach Tom Izzo continue to make progress in the 2025 recruiting class.
According to Jamie Shaw of On3, 2025 four-star guard Jerry Easter is considering a visit to Michigan State.
Easter, a 6-foot-4 combo guard who will be entering his senior year at La Lumiere School/IN, is the No. 28 player in the 2025 On3 Industry Ranking.
Per Shaw, "Easter averaged 18.2 points and 5.9 rebounds playing on Nike's EYBL Scholastic Circuit this high school season."
According to 247Sports, Easter has nearly 40 offers, including Michigan State's fellow Big Ten rivals (current and soon-to-be) Illinois, Ohio State, UCLA, USC, Oregon, Michigan, and Washington.
Easter told Shaw he has already officially visited Oregon and Georgia Tech and is "going to look at visits to Ohio State and Michigan State next school year."
“It’s Coach (Tom) Izzo for me," Shaw said of his interest in the Spartans . "Every time I go there for an unofficial visit, he is just fun to be around. He has so much energy. I went to a couple of games and he just brings a lot of energy on and off the court, I like that about him. I like how he coached AJ Hoggard and Tyson Walker. Coach Izzo is a legendary coach. I’m definitely considering Michigan State as well, they have a high profile and a great coaching staff.”
That's some notable praise for the legendary Spartans coach.
Understandably, the Spartans don't have any 2025 commits yet, but they have some great talent coming from the class of 2024.
Jase Richardson, their top 2024 recruit and 247Sports' No. 4 combo guard in the country, is the son of Michigan State basketball legend Jason Richardson. Next is four-star shooting guard Kur Teng and three-star power forward Jesse McCulloch.
Izzo will have his hands full with the competition surrounding Easter's recruitment, but if development is what is catching the young guard's eye, Izzo is his guy. Hoggard and Walker are only two of some of Michigan State's best guards in recent seasons, and there could even be more before Easter moves on to the college level.

2024 NFL Draft grades: How the Rams got a steal with their first Round 1 pick since 2016
Here's what los angeles is getting in edge rusher jared verse.
On Thursday night, the Los Angeles Rams made their first first-round pick since selecting Jared Goff No. 1 overall back in 2016. At No. 19 overall, Sean McVay and Les Snead added one of the top pass rushers in the 2024 class, selecting Jared Verse out of Florida State. While he's not Aaron Donald , Verse can absolutely wreak havoc off the edge.
Verse's path to the NFL has been anything but conventional. He began his collegiate career at Albany in 2019, but did not make his debut until 2021 because of COVID. He earned CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year honors after recording 10 tackles for a loss and four sacks for the Great Danes.
His transition to the ACC in 2022 proved to be seamless as the Pennsylvania native accumulated 17 tackles for a loss and 9 sacks for the Seminoles. In an encore performance, he tallied 12.5 tackles for a loss and 9 sacks as Florida State was destined for the playoffs until quarterback Jordan Travis suffered an injury.
Here is what the Rams are getting in Verse, including his scouting report, prospect ranking, pro comparison, combine results, college and high school accolades and overall NFL outlook.
NFL Draft grade: B+
"The Rams patiently wait and end up with one of the best pass rushers in this draft. This fills a major need and will help compensate for the loss of Aaron Donald on the inside." -- Pete Prisco

Scouting report
Jared Verse is an Albany transfer who was unranked coming out of high school. He would've been a first-round pick after the 2022 season, but he returned to Florida State and will again be a first-round pick in 2024. He plays with heavy hands and is twitchy off the edge. When he is locked in, he is unblockable.
- Stout at the point of attack
- Plays with heavy hands and has a quick get-off that consistently beats offensive tackles
- Made huge stride in Year 1 at Florida State, but leveled off some in Year 2
- Very little to not love about his game
