Our Methodology

Here at TheBestSchools.org, we take the trust and welfare of our readers very seriously. When making our school and program rankings, our top priority is ensuring that our readers get accurate, unbiased information that can help them make informed decisions about online education. That's why we've developed a rigorous ranking methodology that keeps the needs of our readers front and center.

Our proprietary, multi-criteria ranking algorithm analyzes key data indicators — as collected by the federal government — for each school or program. What data we use depends on the focus of each specific ranking, but in all cases, our ranking methodology is impartial: Schools  cannot buy better rankings  at TBS.

While specific criteria under consideration can vary by ranking, there are a few data points that we value most highly. They are affordability, academic quality, and online enrollment. Below, we break down our algorithm to help you understand what you're getting when you use one of our rankings.

  • Affordability
  • Online Enrollment

Data Sources

The data used in TBS rankings comes primarily from the federal government, and much of it is provided by the schools themselves. We aggregate and analyze this data to build our rankings.

The  Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System  (IPEDS) is our primary source. Its data comes from annual surveys conducted by the U.S. Department of Education's  National Center for Education Statistics  (NCES). Every college, university, or technical school with access to federal financial aid must participate in these surveys, which include questions about enrollment, graduation rates, finances, and faculty qualifications. This is publicly available data, which you can access yourself through the  College Navigator .

Additionally, because we value a personal touch and the professional experience of our staff and Academic Advisory Board, we vet all results and adjust rankings as necessary based on our collected knowledge of schools and degree programs. Depending on the ranking, we may obtain additional input from  AcademicInfluence.com , subject matter experts, prior TBS ranking lists, or other sources we deem relevant to a particular ranking.

Breakdown of Our Rankings Methodology

About our ranking factors.

Here at TBS, we value what you value: quality education, affordability, and the accessibility of online education. These factors guide all of our program rankings.

Each of these factors are further broken down into weighted subfactors. For example, retention rates are weighted more heavily than availability of program options because they are a better indicator of student success.

We chose the following factors for our rankings because of their influence on learning experiences and graduate outcomes. However, students should always balance our rankings against their personal priorities. For instance, a learner who needs a fully online program may prioritize online flexibility more than our rankings do. Our rankings are designed to help you make a decision — not to make a decision for you.

  • Collapse All

Academics - 75%

Affordability - 15%, online enrollment - 10%.

In all our school rankings and recommendations, we work for objectivity and balance. We carefully research and compile each ranking list, and as stated in our advertising disclosure, we do NOT permit financial incentives to influence rankings. Our articles never promote or disregard a school for financial gain.

If you have questions about our ranking methodology, please feel free to connect with our staff through  contact page .

We thank you for your readership and trust.

What is the Difference Between a Social Work Ph.D. and a DSW?

The difference between a social work Ph.D. and a doctor of social work (DSW) is that social work Ph.D. programs tend to be oriented towards research, while DSW programs tend to be oriented towards clinical practice. However, both degrees share significant overlap when it comes to their curriculum and educational requirements. Regardless of which degree is earned, the holder of the degree has a doctorate in the field of social work. If you are interested in the research-side of social work, then you might want to look at social work Ph.D. programs. If you are interested in leading social workers in a clinical setting, then consider a DSW.

What Can I Expect from an Online Doctorate in Social Work Program?

When researching online social work degrees , you may find that they are as unique as the schools that offer them. However, most curricula feature courses and topics common across all DSW and online Ph.D. in social work programs. Generally, Ph.D. students explore advanced theoretical concepts, while those earning a DSW online pursue more practical objectives through applied learning coursework.

Curriculum for an Online Doctorate in Social Work

  • Advanced Research Methods and Statistics: Usually a requirement for earning a Ph.D. in social work online, this course emphasizes research over hands-on practice in the field. Coursework promotes advanced skills in data collection and analysis, research design, and problem formulation. Coursework stresses analytical thinking abilities, preparing students for their dissertation to conclude the degree.
  • Social Science Theories: This course explores both traditional and contemporary theories of social science, primarily through professional publications on the practice of social work, field journals, and public policy literature. Students expand existing theories to influence policy reform and social justice in the public service field.
  • Grant Writing: Successful grant writing is essential for productive social workers. Students in this course locate, draft, budget, track, and manage grant funding opportunities. This is especially valuable to aspiring nonprofit directors, community organizers, and top executives in any field.
  • Teaching in Higher Education: This course combines universal skills in pedagogy, curriculum development, and instructional design with teaching methods specific to social work. Students learn to lead a college-level course in social work, and topics emphasize an industry-relevant curriculum aligned with evidence-based social work principles.
  • Social Welfare Policy Analysis: A research-intensive course, social welfare policy analysis examines the current state of social welfare policy in the United States. Students conclude this course with an empirical policy study in which they pose questions and formulate hypotheses in a focus area of their choice.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Online Doctorate in Social Work?

Most students complete a doctorate in social work in two to three years. However, several factors can affect completion times, including whether a student attends full-time or part-time, how often classes are available, and how a program is structured.

Programs also differ by format. Students seeking maximum flexibility may prefer a self-paced program they can complete in their own time. Others may benefit from a cohort arrangement, which assembles students into groups to facilitate a collaborative learning environment.

Students enrolled in social work Ph.D. programs online typically complete 48-72 credit hours, culminating in a graduate thesis or dissertation. Like other doctoral programs, students may be eligible for independent study opportunities or can work with an advisor to customize their social work curriculum.

Paying for Your Online Doctorate in Social Work

Students should begin the financial aid process by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is used by most schools and private lenders to determine eligibility for scholarships, grants, and loans. While many doctoral programs, including the online Ph.D. in social work, offer financial aid to graduate students, the FAFSA is still required to assess all funding options.

Among the nation's fastest-growing employment sectors, social workers need an advanced education to gain a competitive edge and qualify for top jobs in the marketplace. The demand for social workers increasingly requires scholarships, loans, grants, and work-study awards to fund a student's degree. The field often directs funding opportunities to students in various specialty areas of social work — such as school or healthcare — or targets underserved demographics.

Accreditation for Online Social Work

Prospective students wanting to enroll in a social work Ph.D. program online should first ensure their selected schools are accredited. As with any college degree, the school should hold accreditation from a regional agency, such as the Higher Learning Commission, Middle States Commission on Higher Education, or the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Though accreditation is awarded through a regional or national agency, regionally accredited institutions usually undergo a more rigorous process to obtain accreditation and, therefore, are more common among colleges.

Transfer students should pay attention to the credit-transfer policy of their college of choice. It is not uncommon for nationally accredited institutions to accept credit from regionally or nationally accredited institutions, and for regionally accredited schools to only accept credits from other institutions that have regional accreditation.

The accreditation process in the United States is overseen by regional or national agencies that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), both of which oversee all postsecondary accreditation in the country. Some bachelor's and master's degrees in social work may also receive special program-specific accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education. Be sure to look for your school on the ED or CHEA website.

Employment Outlook for Social Work Graduates

Graduates of social work Ph.D. programs online are eligible for the field's most advanced employment opportunities. While many entry-level jobs in social work require only a bachelor's degree, Ph.D. or DSW graduates with licensure and experience qualify for executive positions that span social work, education, and management fields. Depending on whether a candidate holds a Ph.D. or DSW, they may also pursue a career in research or practice social work in various professional settings. Below are some of the most common careers for social workers:

Social Worker

Social workers advocate for and treat clients who need help with a range of employment-related, financial, and/or behavioral issues affecting the client's quality of life. These professionals may focus on child and family, school, healthcare, or mental health and substance abuse social work. Graduates of a social work doctoral program qualify for licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) status and are eligible for their choice of specialties in the field.

Community Service Manager

Social and community service managers oversee programs and workers that deliver social services to local communities. These professionals coordinate outreach and promotional efforts, recruit and hire staff, develop and implement new programs, and propose funding for community projects. Jobs in this area of management typically require an advanced degree in social work or a related field, and many years of work experience.

Top Executive

Top executives manage all aspects of day-to-day operations for an organization or business. They may supervise -- or delegate to department heads -- various administrative, financial, legal, and HR tasks for the organization. Graduates of an online Ph.D. in social work may be especially well-suited to CEO or COO positions for nonprofit organizations or human advocacy groups.

Post-Secondary Teacher

Postsecondary teachers are not only qualified professors at universities, community colleges , and technical schools: they also conduct scholarly research and/or publish their findings in professional journals. Generally, postsecondary teachers need a Ph.D. in social work to teach in a four-year university.

School Social Worker

School social workers develop methods of improving a student's academic performance and help them maintain healthy social relationships within a school environment. School social workers usually have a graduate degree and at least two years of experience to qualify for LCSW certification in this specialty.

Doctorate in Social Work Salary

Graduates from Ph.D. in social work online programs can earn a range of salaries depending on their area of focus. While both Ph.D. and DSW holders are highly qualified in the basic principles of social work and its services, there are a wealth of job options across a variety of fields that offer ways for graduates to apply their skills. Licensed clinical social workers with a doctoral degree possess an edge on their competitors for social work jobs, while graduates with a doctor of social work may be uniquely prepared to apply their social work skills to a teaching or managerial position. As shown in the table below, most jobs in social work offer attractive compensation to students with advanced qualifications, especially nonprofit managers and college professors.

This faculty member will serve as a guide throughout the capstone experience and help students continuously develop their identities as DSWs. During these meetings, students can discuss their topics, talk through their progress, and receive feedback.

DSW vs. PhD

Both a Doctorate of Social Work and a PhD in social work are terminal degrees that prepare professionals in the field with advanced knowledge and research opportunities. However, there are a number of distinctions between the two. While both are challenging degrees, asking students to rise to the most advanced levels of knowledge within their field, their rigorous curricula typically have different outcomes.

A DSW prepares students to apply what they learn and research to their practice in the field.  A DSW student may take a new approach they learn in class one day and apply it to their work with a client the next day. Graduates of Simmons’ DSW program will emerge as scholar-practitioners who seamlessly apply doctoral-level knowledge and practices to their work in the field.

Alternatively,  a PhD student studies a rigorous curriculum based heavily around the research process.  These students focus on epistemological theory as well as grand theoretical models within social work contexts. PhD candidates may complete their degree without ever working directly with clients or in the field. Rather, they are focused on the research and theoretical components of the social work field of study.

Simmons offers an on-campus PhD in social work that incorporates some of the hands-on aspects of the DSW into a research-centric curriculum.

Master's degree in social work

A PhD builds on previous knowledge, so applicants must have a completed graduate degree in social work before pursuing a more specialized, in-depth doctoral degree through an online program.

Technology requirements

Because some coursework requires an oral or face-to-face component in addition to other distance learning standards, applicants will need to be able to access technology that meets all technical criteria for their social work program.

Transcripts and GPA

Programs will require official transcripts sent from all previous higher learning institutions. They will make sure applicants meet minimum grade point average requirements, and be sure pre-requisites for social work education are met.

Advanced Programs, Milestones and Resources for Social Work Students

Social workers with a lot of experience in their field are most often the ones seeking a PhD. They have recognized the need for leadership and change within the field, and may want a way to explore how they can fill that need. In addition to specializations in areas such as substance abuse or crisis management, PhD programs prepare graduates to lead the social work industry and encourage and enact change. Here are some of the major milestones students can expect during their social work doctorate education.

Year 1 Milestones

Accepted students should enter a PhD program with a solid idea about the area of social work they want to focus on. This first year is the time to dig deeper, and change paths if their interest or findings change. It's the time for students to explore precise facets of the field deeply.

Foundational Course

Programs have course requirements to ensure that all PhD students begin the social work program with the same base knowledge and research experience. These requirements are usually based around research methods and writing, and may be split up into several courses or be taught as a single seminar.

Social work in context

Students will complete classes in different areas of social work such as the history of social work, contemporary issues and how technology is being used in social work. This gives students a richer understand of social work and what a higher degree in this field can be used for.

Course of study

A student's faculty advisor will help them begin the process of mapping out a plan of courses to fulfil degree requirements. This will become more focused as a student moves into their chosen specialization within the field of social work. Specializations may range from clinical social work to policy practice.

Year 2 Milestones

A final dissertation looms at the end of any PhD program. After completing initial core requirements, doctoral level social work students should have narrowed their focus and set their sights on their dissertation topic, which is the culmination of their academic career.

Specialization

Students should begin working in their chosen fields of interest. This may involve taking elective courses agreed upon with a faculty advisor that guide them towards an area of social work study they wish to explore with their dissertation, or it can involve following a set track of classes established by their college or university.

Leadership methods

Because students are expected to have previous experience with social work, classes explore theories, approaches, methods and techniques of social work, as well as ethical implications and legal issues. These topics prepare students to make and defend any choices they may have to make in their field.

Beginning dissertation

As a student moves more deeply into their chosen specialization within social work, they should begin to gather ideas and research for their dissertation topic. Some programs offer courses that prepare students to write a dissertation proposal and prospectus.

Year 3 Milestones

The final year of an online social work PhD program may require remote students to come on-campus for an  intensive dissertation-writing retreat , or complete an ethics review application if their research involves human subjects. Students take the final steps towards earning a doctoral degree with the completion of their dissertation.

Program coursework requirements

Apply to the irb, dissertation completion, graduation requirements.

Students may take varying amounts of time to complete their online PhD program, but there are standards for graduating that they all must meet in order to earn a doctoral degree in social work.

Completed coursework and tests

Online PhD programs may have weekly, monthly or end-of-course requirements that can range from hands-on participation to essays. Students must complete all coursework satisfactorily to graduate.

Minimum GPA

Because PhD programs are so intensive and require self-motivation, students should make sure that they prove their commitment to social work throughout the program by maintaining a grade point average that meets or exceeds minimum standards.

Comprehensive exam

Some doctoral degree programs require students to complete exams at different stages in the program, or a final exam may be taken at the end of the program that addresses how well a student has learned within their area of social work.

Social work dissertations may involve research with human subjects. Some online degree programs may require students to defend their research orally before an academic council, either in person or via video conferencing. All dissertations are scholarly papers that contribute to a student's chosen area of specialization within social work.

Principles Learned in an Online Social Work PhD Program

Phd in social work, critical evaluation.

Social work PhD students learn to critically evaluate the history of social work, its mission and its core values. They can assess how research and evaluation may be used to improve social interventions and advance theory development, and they can apply theory, knowledge and research to develop innovative approaches to social issues.

All doctoral social work programs teach students to apply their knowledge and strategies in ethical, professional ways. Social workers interact with vulnerable people and populations, and anyone trained in this field understands how to maintain impeccable ethics and boundaries in whichever area of social work they may choose to work in.

Issue intervention

Doctoral degree graduates are able to explore current research, gather data using research and statistical tools, and utilize best practices and theory to address social needs. They can then come up with prevention and intervention strategies that address these problems and advocate for various social groups.

Promote social change

Online social work PhD graduates have learned leadership skills as well as compassion for and attention to the many levels of the human condition. These graduates are equipped to promote social change as they collaborate with leaders, agencies and universities, advocating for social justice and policy changes that advance the economic and social well-being of culturally diverse populations. Their leadership promotes sustainable changes that improve the quality of social work everywhere.

Those who successfully complete coursework for Ph.D. in social work programs develop a unique, in-depth understanding of real-world issues that affect vulnerable or at-risk populations and are able to position themselves at the forefront of influencing treatment, policy and best practices through their evidence-based research.

Direct practice social workers rely on research to guide them in maneuvering and solving challenging situations in their everyday work. Research will remain key to this practice for many more years as new bills are passed, financial markets evolve, and communities respond to major events such as natural disasters and viral outbreaks.

There is a distinct difference between a Ph.D. in social work and a Doctor of Social Work (DSW). While there may be some overlapping coursework within the curricula, it is important for graduate students to know what work environment they prefer and aspire to be in when deciding upon a doctoral program in social work.

Ph.D. in social work programs have coursework geared toward advanced research methods that help to develop social work-related policy and programs. While Ph.D. students can go on to rewarding social work careers outside of academia through research, many Ph.D. graduates pursue careers in universities and other institutions that involve teaching and high-level clinical investigation.

A DSW is also a graduate-level degree, but while a Ph.D. in social work focuses on research in an academic setting, a DSW program trains students to work in a variety of other settings, including K-12 schools, social services and hospitals. DSW programs focus on leadership and management. Students pursuing a DSW should hold a master’s degree, but requirements can vary from school to school. If you’re interested in pursuing advanced or supervisory work, a DSW might be a good fit for you.

Once you have decided to pursue a Ph.D. in social work online, you may be considering a number of factors before selecting a program, such as coursework loads, dissertation parameters, the accreditation of the program, whether a master’s in social work is a prerequisite, and other application requirements.

Accreditation of Social Work Degrees

While the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) gives institutional accreditation for Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) programs, there is no accrediting body for Ph.D. in social work or DSW programs. The CSWE is reviewing the possibility of accrediting doctoral programs in the future.

The council is a partnership of educational and professional social work institutions, social welfare agencies and private citizens that is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency in the United States for all social work education. CSWE accreditation signals that an undergraduate or graduate social work program meets the council’s standards for student competencies, institutional policies, curricula and more.

Do I Need an MSW to Get a Ph.D. in Social Work?

Generally speaking, an MSW is needed for admission into many Ph.D. in social work online programs, although there are some that will also accept a master’s degree in similar areas of study like the ones below:

  • Public Administration (MPA)
  • Public Health (MPH)
  • Nursing (MSN)
  • Public Policy (MPP)
  • Business Administration (MBA)
  • Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT)

A professional doctorate will often also be an acceptable prerequisite for a Ph.D. in social work program, and there are dual MSW/Ph.D. in social work programs available for students interested in pursuing that track.

Factors to Consider Before Applying

Different institutions may specialize more in one aspect of social work than another, or some may provide financial assistance programs that interest you. These are some factors to keep in mind as you are making a choice. The size of the faculty and dissertation requirements can also play a role in your decision process.

Earning a Ph.D. is a significant financial investment and prospective students might feel some concern about funding their education. If you’re considering a Ph.D., you likely hope to advance your career in social work. Don’t let the price tag put you off. Identify a program with a price that falls within or close enough to your budget. The cost of online social work doctoral degrees varies, depending upon variables such as books, state residency and technology fees.

For those who are employed within the social work profession, some employers offer tuition reimbursement programs to incentivize employees to further their education. Check your employee handbook or speak with your human resources department to see if such an option is available. Student federal loans are another option, and one that many people take, such as the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan Program and the Federal Perkins Loan Program .

Scholarships, grants and fellowships are also available to qualified candidates who apply. Here are a few:

  • The American Cancer Society’s Doctoral Training Grants in Oncology Social Work
  • The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine’s Ford Foundation Fellowship Program

Concentrations

Concentrations and specializations in Ph.D. in social work programs vary from school to school, and some overlap with those available in MSW programs . Some concentrations in online Ph.D. in social work programs include:

  • Addictions and Social Work
  • Clinical Practice Expertise
  • Social or Criminal Justice
  • Disaster, Crisis, and Intervention
  • Family Studies and Interventions

Coursework and Dissertation

What should someone studying for their Ph.D. in social work expect when it comes to coursework? The Group of Advancement Doctorate Education in Social Work (GADE) notes that graduate students have many types of Ph.D. programs in social work to choose from, most offering research-focused coursework within social work as well as other disciplines and practicums in teaching. Dual or interdisciplinary degrees are also an option that enhance a program’s course offerings, often with a choice of full- or part-time online programs.

Topic areas covered in an online program may include:

  • Quantitative Research for Social Work
  • Measurement in Social Work
  • Academic Leadership and Administration in Social Work Education

Students pursuing their doctorate in social work will most likely have to write a dissertation (also called a doctoral thesis) that is the culmination of years of graduate-study research.

What a Strong Ph.D. Candidate Looks Like

Candidates for Ph.D. in social work online programs often have a strong academic background, an MSW or related master’s degree and a few years of research or policy experience within the field. While every program’s admissions requirements are different, doctoral program candidates should generally have a clear affinity for pursuing a research-focused or scholarly-based career path.

Beyond the expected admissions requirements, a Ph.D. in social work candidate is likely dedicated to solving complex social issues. Having strong organizational skills may help with your work in this field.

Should You Get a Ph.D. in Social Work?

Social Work, DSW

The Doctorate in Clinical Social Work is a fully online program that offers all the advantages of a world class learning community in a highly interactive, relational, accessible and convenient format. Balancing the rigor of doctoral education with the practical considerations of busy working professionals, students complete the coursework and dissertation simultaneously, earning the degree in 3 years without career disruption.  The program uses a combination of campus immersion experiences and online course delivery (videoconferencing) that works for working professionals, wherever they live. Students enjoy an unparalleled educational experience, coming together to interact and learn on an Ivy League campus during the campus immersion experiences.  Technology is used to connect, not to distance. The program recognizes the importance of relational learning and all of the online course delivery and educational strategies are chosen with an eye toward building knowledge in community.  Renowned faculty from all over the world teach cutting-edge courses on the latest in clinical practice, research, and teaching. Graduates’ successes prove that the DSW is a gateway to fulfilling careers as social work practice leaders and educators.

For more information: https://www.sp2.upenn.edu/program/doctorate-in-clinical-social-work/

Students begin the program with a five day immersion experience on Penn’s Philadelphia campus at the start of the fall semester (late August/early September). During this residency period, students attend their first classes and participate in a variety of activities that immerse them in the Penn experience and prepare them for the DSW program. Students come to campus for one more five-day residency period in the summer following the first year. Students who are able to travel to campus more often are invited to do so to use the library, meet with faculty, and take advantage of other campus resources and activities.

Classes meet online two evenings each week for two hours. Students and faculty log in on their personal computers or devices from wherever they are. The real-time online video conferencing format allows everyone to be seen and heard at all times, closely approximating a physical classroom experience. Students are in class for the first two years of the program; in the third year, students participate in a Dissertation Seminar Series that provides support and structure as they complete the last stages of the dissertation.

The curriculum is designed to bridge theory, practice, and research, and prepare students for teaching. Students are actively engaged in learning about and critiquing the latest developments, discoveries, and best practices in evidence-based social work practice and teaching. Classes are taught by Penn faculty and renowned visiting faculty and clinician experts from across the country. The dissertation provides an opportunity to gain deep knowledge and become a content expert in a particular area, as well as contribute to the social work knowledge base.

Required Classes

During the second year, the student cohort selects two electives and takes them together as a group.

The degree and major requirements displayed are intended as a guide for students entering in the Fall of 2023 and later. Students should consult with their academic program regarding final certifications and requirements for graduation.

Sample Plan of Study

First-year curriculum.

The program begins with a two-semester foundation that spans clinical theory and research and ends with a core course on trauma-informed individual and organizational interventions. Concurrent with their coursework, students engage in a dissertation workshop that helps guide them through the first stages of the dissertation project. Near the end of the first year, students are matched with a dissertation chair who shepherds them through the remainder of the dissertation process.

Second-year Curriculum

The curriculum in year 2 continues with specialized, applied courses that cover clinical content and preparation for teaching. The second and final year of coursework culminates in two electives that the student cohort selects and takes together as a group. Students continue the dissertation work, under the direction of their dissertation committee.

Third-year Curriculum

During the third and final year of the program, students complete, defend and deposit the dissertation. There is no formal coursework, but students participate in a dissertation seminar that provides structure and support and keeps them moving steadily toward the defense.

Completing the Online MSW program provides wider access to expertise, experience, and connections that help create positive change in your community.

  • Industry Needs The nation has a shortage of social workers, with too many underserved areas. Over the next seven years, national shortages are predicted for the following Direct Practice positions: mental health and substance abuse social workers; health care social workers to assist aging populations; and child, family and school social workers.
  • Leadership Opportunities The state of North Carolina currently employs more than 15,000 licensed clinical social workers. The need for such professionally-trained social workers is projected to grow by 9–12% from 2021–2031.
  • Macro “Big Picture” Option Our Community, Management, and Policy Practice concentration prepares social workers to improve lives from the systems level.

“The Online MSW program is a good fit for learners who are balancing studies, work, family and other commitments. We have designed the program to welcome students at all levels. I look forward to meeting students who are recent graduates, career changers and practicing social workers.”

Tauchiana Williams

Degree requirements are the same as our campus-based full-time program.

The online MSW degree requires 62 credit hours of graduate study and is divided into two levels: Generalist and Specialization.

  • The Generalist Curriculum (29 credit hours) consists of courses related to the following areas: social welfare policy and services, human behavior in the social environment, social research, and social work practice. Students also complete several additional requirements as part of the Generalist Curriculum, including a practicum (@ 400 hours) of supervised practice in an agency setting in their home community and a practicum seminar.
  • The Specialization Curriculum (33 credit hours) includes courses that enable students to build on the foundation that they acquired during the Generalist Curriculum. Students choose a concentration — either Direct Practice (DP) or Community, Management, and Policy Practice (CMPP) — and build skills and knowledge in research methodology, policy, and evidence-informed practice. Students will complete courses and a second practicum (@ 600 hours) of supervised practice in an agency setting in their home community. Students complete 9 credit hours in elective courses as part of the specialization curriculum.

First semester class offerings:

SOWO500: Human Development in Context I: Infancy to Adolescence SOWO501: Oppression and Resistance in Social Work Practice SOWO540: Social Work Practice with Families, Individuals, and Groups

Second semester class offerings:

SOWO505: Human Development in Context II: Adulthood SOWO530: Social Welfare Systems and Policies SOWO570: Social Work Practice with Organizations and Communities

Online students complete 400 Generalist and 600 Specialization practicum hours with an agency within their home communities. Through practicum assignments, our students put their classroom knowledge into practice through real-world experiences — exploring career paths, developing workplace skills and competencies, expanding their professional networks, and building confidence in working with clients and colleagues.

Our students have completed placements in social services, schools, hospitals, community nonprofits, research organizations, substance abuse treatment programs, child welfare agencies, transitional housing programs, and a variety of other organizations. We will work individually with students to identify practicum placements that are appropriate to the student’s needs and professional goals.

We are committed to ensuring that all students succeed, which is why our Online MSW program provides the same access to academic resources and support as the School’s campus-based programs. Academic advising is available for all degree-seeking students, providing educational planning assistance to fulfill academic requirements and standards and also further professional career goals. In addition, every online student is assigned a student success coach who advises on the MSW curriculum policies and procedures, helps design plans of study, and clears students for registration each semester. The student success coach and faculty advisor work together to guide academic and professional development.

Detailed information on tuition and fees are available on the  UNC Finance and Operations  website. For information on additional resources for funding, please visit our  UNC School of Social Work  website.

MSW students often use a combination of funding sources to finance their graduate studies. All applicants are automatically considered for program scholarships. No further action is required in order to be considered for these scholarship opportunities. What's the difference between a dsw and ph.d. in social work.

A Doctorate of Social Work or DSW is considered a practice doctorate and is focused on social work practice, applied research, supervision and management. A DSW is best suited for practitioners who seek to advance their position in the field to leadership, management or community-based research. Having a Doctor of Philosophy or Ph.D. in Social Work enhances research skills and prepares students as stewards of the field to advance theory and knowledge. A Ph.D. is preferred within universities’ hiring faculty to teach and conduct social work research.

What can you do with a Ph.D. in Social Work?

Having a Ph.D. in Social Work degree offers many opportunities. Graduates with this degree can go on to academic positions as faculty in colleges or universities. They might take on tenure-track or clinical professor positions in programs that offer Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or Master of Social Work (MSW) degrees. Some graduates may find positions in other academic social science departments, such as sociology or human services.

Graduates of the Ph.D. in Social Work program may pursue positions as a:

  • Faculty in Higher Education (both clinical and tenure-earning)
  • Grant Writer

UNC School of Social Work ranked No. 4 best graduate school for social work in the nation

Posted on April 9, 2024

Tied for No. 2 public, No. 4 overall, UNC School of Social Work is recognized alongside a score of Carolina programs ranked Top 10 in the nation in their respective categories by the magazine.

Months after being ranked fourth in national research and development (R&D) expenditures among R1 higher education institutions, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work earned another No. 4 ranking today.

The School of Social Work moved up three spots in the latest U.S. News & World Report “Best Graduate Schools” rankings , rising to a tie for fourth in the nation among the 319 surveyed social work schools accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education.

The School ranked No. 1 among schools of social work across the Southeast and tied for second nationally among public universities.

Dean Ramona Denby-Brinson said being ranked second among all public university social work programs was especially meaningful due to the school’s responsibility to serve local, national and global communities.

“Our new national ranking is exciting news,” Denby-Brinson said. “Among many measures of success, the ranking recognizes the tremendous contributions of our faculty and staff. Our MSW (Master of Social Work) program is preparing practitioners, researchers and advocates who improve life for thousands of people each day. We are honored to be recognized by our peers for the excellence displayed by our faculty in all they do.”

Executive Vice Provost Amy Locklear Hertel, a clinical assistant professor at the School, said “The UNC School of Social Work is a true asset on campus, to our state, and the globe. By drawing our attention to pressing issues of our most vulnerable populations, to developing strong communities and systems, to informing policy as well as practice, the UNC School of Social Work is preparing social service practitioners and researchers to fully ‘advance equity, transform systems, and improves lives’ — just as the School’s mission states.”

She went on to say, “It is an honor to be a clinical faculty member in the School.”

Since arriving at the School as dean in August 2021, Denby-Brinson worked closely with faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners to establish a strategic plan that helped to elevate the graduate programs, modernize the curriculum, and increase student enrollment by providing access and flexible degree offerings while using advanced learning modalities and proven pedagogical tools.

“Our graduates are prepared to work with individuals, families and communities to solve complex problems,” Denby-Brinson said. “The practice approaches that we teach derive from the impactful research produced by our faculty. We have a strong faculty, and they are tackling entrenched issues and devising real world solutions.”

“I’m delighted to hear this news, and to note that the School has consistently ranked in the Top 10 since 1997,” said Dean Emeritus Jack Richman.

The latest rankings were compiled based on peer assessments from administrators, deans and faculty of accredited degree programs and are compiled on a scale of one (marginal) to five (outstanding). The surveys were sent in fall 2023 and early 2024.

Pros and Cons of Getting a Doctorate Online

A business professional working on their online doctorate degree during their lunch break

From heightened career advancement opportunities to increased salary potential, there are many reasons why people are choosing to earn doctorate degrees in 2024. Thanks to the proliferation of online doctorate programs, working professionals no longer have to press pause on their jobs to attend classes or complete coursework. Instead, tens of thousands of American professionals each year are rising to meet the growth in doctoral and professional-level occupations. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), such occupations are projected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026, which is faster than the 7-percent average projection for all occupations.

If you are interested in earning a doctoral degree, you may have questions such as “Are online doctoral degrees respected?” or “Do I need to earn my degree from an accredited institution?” Discovering the answers to those questions can help you determine whether an online doctorate is a good fit for helping them achieve their professional and personal goals.

Pros of Online Doctorate Programs

Online doctoral programs provide students with a long list of benefits. While some may come to mind immediately — the ability to complete coursework from your home office or a breakroom at work, for example — others are less obvious but equally meaningful. Consider several positive elements of both the experience and impact of earning an online doctoral degree.

Flexibility

For the average working professional, spare time is a precious commodity. Between personal and professional obligations, an in-personal doctoral program with a rigid class schedule is often a non-starter. The university administrators designing the best online doctoral degree programs understand the time constraints for aspiring students and intentionally offer creative solutions that enhance the lives of professionals rather than burden them.

The flexibility of an online doctoral program empowers professionals to continue building their careers as they earn their degrees. This flexibility helps the calendar stay manageable and allows students to integrate what they are learning into their jobs in real time.

Saving Time

Gone are the days when pursuing a doctorate necessarily meant relocation, residency, or refraining from full-time work. While some individuals will find that a cross-country move for in-person coursework or an all-in approach to academic life best fits their doctoral pursuit, most working professionals are looking for a different path. An online doctoral program offers such individuals a time-savvy approach to further education. There’s no time spent commuting, walking to class, or learning the nuances of a new city and campus. Instead, the online delivery model brings education into the professional’s existing home, workplace and routine.

Instead of a rush hour drive from the office to an evening lecture, the out-of-class time commitment is simply the opening of a laptop. Frantically looking for parking to make it to a professor’s office hours on time is replaced with a virtual meeting link. Through an online program, students are empowered to make the most of their hours and can devote time and energy to their work, personal life and school.

There are long-term time savings for online doctoral degree earners as well. Students enrolled in online programs often earn their degrees more quickly than their peers enrolled in in-person programs. The efficient approach to time in online doctoral programs not only allows students to leverage their schedules during the program but after as well, as they graduate ready to make the most of their time in the workplace.

Personalized Learning

One of the most beloved features of online doctoral programs is the personalized learning approach. Through both live and asynchronous instruction, students have access to multiple educational modes. Individuals who learn best through reading, for example, can access transcripts for online courses, while those who benefit from writing out their thoughts may find discussion forums especially useful.

Additionally, the best online doctorate degree programs pair students with faculty mentors — who, because of the virtual nature of the program, can live anywhere in the country — who work and research in fields specific to the student’s interests.

Maximized Networking

Online doctorate programs empower working professionals to expand their networks significantly. By connecting with fellow students throughout the country, students enrolled in online doctorates have the opportunity to cultivate a more diverse community of like-minded professionals who are collectively working toward the greater good. The insight, perspective and experiences of individuals from various backgrounds can help students develop a national, and even global, lens for viewing their work, relationships and impact.

While an in-person educational experience can facilitate good conversation, an online platform creates a greater opportunity for diversified discussion. A principal working in education in a rural area, for example, may be enrolled in an online doctorate of education course with a superintendent in a major city. A business consultant who serves an aging client base may form a connection with an analyst focused on young professionals. Relationships like these can be mutually enriching, expanding perspectives and providing ample opportunity for collaboration, sharing advice and encouraging lifelong learning.

Cons of Online Doctoral Programs

While the online doctoral experience is overwhelmingly positive, there are a few factors for aspiring students to bear in mind. By asking the right questions about themselves and the programs they are considering, doctoral hopefuls can find the best fit for their educational futures.

Net-Based Networking

While virtual networking has tremendous potential for cultivating an expansive, diverse community, some prefer in-person interaction. For working professionals who find digital communication or relationship-building difficult or uncomfortable, the networking element of online doctoral programs may be challenging.

Credibility Concerns

Whether or not online degree programs are respected is an important issue for individuals considering a doctorate. The most critical question is whether or not an accredited institution issues a degree. Students who earn degrees — whether online or in-person — from accredited institutions can feel at ease about the credibility of their program. When a trusted accrediting body gives a program its stamp of approval, that means it meets high educational standards.

There are several accrediting bodies in the United States, many of which focus on certain types of degree programs or regions of the country. AACSB, for example, accredits business schools. The scope of accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) includes distance and correspondence education for eleven states and Latin America.

Time Management

Personalized learning, asynchronous instruction and virtual coursework mean that online doctoral students must create schedules and establish the structure for working toward their degrees. Individuals who struggle with time management or self-discipline may find that an in-person educational experience provides them with the rigor and boundaries they need to succeed academically.

U.S. News Ranks Best Graduate Schools

To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released the 2024 rankings for multiple graduate fields.

Depending on the job or field, earning a graduate degree may lead to higher earnings, career advancement and specialized skill development.

But with several types of degrees and hundreds of graduate schools, it can be difficult to narrow down the options. To help prospective graduate students find a school that fits their needs, U.S. News released its 2024 Best Graduate Schools rankings today. They evaluate business, education, fine arts, health, law, library studies, nursing, public affairs, science, and social sciences and humanities graduate programs. Medical school and engineering rankings are not being released at this time.

A notable methodology change includes a new salary indicator based on profession in the business rankings.

Additionally, for the first time in four years, there are new rankings for a blend of doctoral and master's programs in audiology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, pharmacy, nurse midwifery and speech-language pathology. Graduate programs in nurse anesthesia and social work are also ranked for the first time since 2016 and 2022, respectively. Those and other specialty rankings are based on reputation ratings from scholars at other surveyed schools.

Read each program's specific methodology for the most detailed explanations of all the changes. The rankings are one source of information among many that prospective college students can use to inform their college decision. Below is a summary of the top-ranked schools in four major graduate program areas:

Best Law Schools

Best business schools, best nursing schools, best education schools.

Among the top 10 law schools . Yale Law School in Connecticut and California-based  Stanford Law School shared the top spot again. The  University of Chicago Law School in Illinois maintained its No. 3 rank, followed by a four-way tie at No. 4: Duke University School of Law in North Carolina, Harvard Law School in Massachusetts, the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law .

Columbia Law School in New York ranked No. 8 again, while there was a three-way tie for No. 9: New York University School of Law , Northwestern University's Pritzker School of Law in Illinois and the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor Law School .

Looking beyond the top 10, multiple law schools moved up in the rankings. William & Mary Law School in Virginia, for instance, jumped nine spots from a tie at No. 45 to a five-way tie at No. 36.

U.S. News also ranked 13 law specialties: business/corporate, clinical training, constitutional, contracts/commercial, criminal, dispute resolution, environmental, health care, intellectual property, international, legal writing, tax and trial advocacy. (You can filter by specialty on the  main ranking page .)

Meanwhile, in the  part-time law school rankings – which consists of law schools with at least 20 part-time students enrolled in fall 2022 and fall 2023 – the top three stayed the same. The  Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., is once again at the top while D.C.-based  George Washington University Law School , now No. 3, switched places with the  Fordham University School of Law in New York City, which claimed second place.

Previously ranked at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively, the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and Stanford Graduate School of Business took the top spot in this year's full-time MBA program rankings . Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management and the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business moved down from their previous places in the top two to tie at No. 3.

While the top 10 mostly consists of the same schools as last year, both the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business joined those ranks this year. UC Berkeley rose from a three-way tie at No. 11 to a three-way tie at No. 7, while UVA moved up four spots from No. 14 to a tie at No. 10.

Farther down the full-time MBA rankings, there were some big changes. For example, Pitt's Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business soared 39 spots from a tie at No. 86 to a tie at No. 47.

Meanwhile, the very top of the part-time MBA rankings looks similar to last year, with the same schools in the top 5: UChicago, UC Berkeley, Northwestern, NYU's Leonard N. Stern School of Business and the Anderson School of Management at the University of California—Los Angeles. But UChicago took the No. 1 spot from UC Berkeley this year.

Moving up from No. 2, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in Maryland tied with Emory University's Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing in Georgia to claim the top spot in this year's nursing master's program rankings. Duke University School of Nursing in North Carolina climbed up by one to claim the third spot.

Johns Hopkins ranked No. 1, as it did last year, in the Doctor of Nursing Practice program rankings. George Mason University School of Nursing in Virginia – which reported more graduates and resources per faculty – soared from a four-way tie at No. 39 to take the No. 2 spot. Duke tied with the University of Washington School of Nursing to round out the top three.

Duke also ranked No. 1 in all of the ranked nursing master's nursing practice specialties, including administration, family, both acute and primary care adult gerontology, and mental health.

Once again, Teachers College, Columbia University in New York was No. 1 in the graduate education schools rankings. This year, however, it tied with the University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Education , which climbed two spots.

The University of Michigan—Ann Arbor's School of Education dropped from the top position to tie with the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies at No. 3. UCLA was previously tied at No. 7.

U.S. News also ranks nine education specialties, with the College of Education at Michigan State University claiming the top spot in the following categories: curriculum and instruction, educational administration, elementary teacher education, higher education administration and secondary teacher education.

The college also received high marks for its part-time law program, ranked No. 14. The full-time law program is ranked No. 89.

The Graduate School of Social Work is ranked at No. 12, making it one of the top social work programs in the country, a category that includes both master’s and doctoral programs.

“It’s gratifying to know that our work to center equity and advance justice, our emphasis on action, our commitment to community, and our responsive education are recognized by our peers nationwide,” Interim Dean and Associate Professor Lisa Reyes Mason says. “This achievement is in large part due to our exceptional staff and faculty. Their passion, creativity, and commitment to social work education are an inspiration.”

The Daniels College of Business ' full-time MBA program is once again in the top 100, ranked at No. 87. The part-time program climbed eight spots, coming in at No. 101. According to the most recently available data, 94% of employed graduates received a salary increase within four months of graduation. The average salary increase was 52%.

Lowell Valencia-Miller , assistant dean of MBA programs, says those numbers are a testament to a unique, challenge-based approach to curriculum that directly translates to each graduate's resume.

"At Daniels, you learn by doing," Valencia-Miller says. "During their program, students serve as consultants to real organizations with genuine business problems. Plus, our immersive international and leadership experiences create a tight-knit cohort—which becomes a business network after graduation."

The  Morgridge College of Education is also in the top 100 with a ranking of No. 99. According to U.S. News, funded research per faculty members increased from $151,600 to $236,000, an increase of 56%. The peer assessment score for education increased from 2.9 to 3.4.

U.S. News & World Report rankings for graduate programs are based on two types of data: expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators measuring the quality of a school’s faculty, research, students and post-graduate outcomes. Rankings data comes from statistical surveys of 2,225 programs and from reputation surveys sent to nearly 17,000 academics and professionals conducted in fall 2023 and early 2024.
