The contamination of soil due to the presence of chemicals or other harmful particles is called soil pollution. It, directly and indirectly, affects our lives. Excessive use of chemicals like pesticides and fertilisers for agricultural production, mining, improper waste disposal, and acid rain are some of the major causes of soil pollution. As a result of soil pollution, the soil loses its fertility and deteriorates natural vegetation. It adversely affects the organisms residing in the soil, degrades agricultural productivity, and even results in famine.

Noise pollution is caused by the excessive amounts of noise in our environment. Noise pollution is generally man-made, and it badly affects the natural balance of our ecosystem. Any sound which is over 85 decibels is harmful to human health. Due to globalisation and industrialisation, the level of noise pollution in our environment has increased drastically. Some of the main contributors to noise pollution are machinery used in industries, noise emitted by vehicles, sounds produced during construction work, noise during public festivals and social events, etc. Noise pollution has become a major issue for many developed and developing nations. As a consequence, people are facing sleeping disorders, hearing loss, hypertension, stress-related illnesses, etc.

Thermal pollution is caused by the sudden increase or decrease of the temperature of a natural body of water. Industrial machinery and power plants are the major contributors to thermal pollution. For the process of cooling machinery, water from nature is collected and used. But after this mechanism, the temperature of the water gets altered. By pumping back the water, the thermal balance of the natural source of water becomes affected and results in thermal pollution. It changes the oxygen level and destroys ecosystems.

The pollution caused by the release of radioactive substances into the environment during nuclear explosions, nuclear weapon production and decommissioning, mining of radioactive ores, and disposal of radioactive wastes are called radioactive pollution.

All this pollution has had a great impact on our lives. Many environmental catastrophes like global warming, acid rain, famine, drought, earthquakes, etc., are the returns given to us by earth for our greed. If we continue to pollute, then be ready to face the end.

My message is that we'll be watching you.

This is all wrong. I shouldn't be up here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet, you all come to us young people for hope. How dare you!

You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words and yet I'm one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!

For more than 30 years, the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away and come here saying that you're doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.

You say you hear us and that you understand the urgency, but no matter how sad and angry I am, I do not want to believe that. Because if you really understood the situation and still kept on failing to act then you would be evil and that I refuse to believe.

The popular idea of cutting our emissions in half in 10 years only gives us a 50 percent chance of staying below 1.5 degrees and the risk of setting off irreversible chain reactions beyond human control.

Fifty percent may be acceptable to you, but those numbers do not include tipping points, most feedback loops, additional warming hidden by toxic air pollution or the aspects of equity and climate justice.

They also rely on my generation sucking hundreds of billions of tons of your CO2 out of the air with technologies that barely exist.

So a 50 percent risk is simply not acceptable to us, we who have to live with the consequences.

How dare you pretend that this can be solved with just business as usual and some technical solutions? With today's emissions levels, that remaining CO2 budget will be entirely gone within less than eight and a half years.

There will not be any solutions or plans presented in line with these figures here today, because these numbers are too uncomfortable and you are still not mature enough to tell it like it is.

You are failing us, but the young people are starting to understand your betrayal. The eyes of all future generations are upon you and if you choose to fail us, I say: We will never forgive you.

We will not let you get away with this. Right here, right now is where we draw the line. The world is waking up and change is coming, whether you like it or not.

We need to bring a change in our transportation choices. Begin with opting for public transportation instead of a private one. Try to carpool or walk and ride bikes to places. Further, we must also make sustainable food choices. Local and organic produce is the way to go.

Furthermore, the little things will go a long way. For instance, switching off the lights and fans when not in use. Unplugging electrical appliances and using energy-efficient appliances.

Moreover, we must also practice recycling and reducing waste production.  Do not use plastic and carry your own cloth or plastic bags when shopping. Use glass containers for storage instead of plastic ones. Further, conserve water at all times. Fix any leakages if present and do not use hot water unnecessarily.

To sum it up, we see that the change begins with us. You don’t have to bank on the government or the industries to curb pollution, as we all contribute to it. We need to control pollution so as to create a healthy future for our upcoming generations. Every person on this earth has a great role to play in restoring the balance of the earth. Educate the public about menacing issues and protect the earth from degrading.

Even as I speak, 10,000 clothing items are being sent to landfills every 5 minutes. All because of Fast Fashion! Even as I speak, more than 80 percent of the world population is living under light-polluted skies. All because of light pollution!  And, when we actually reflect upon all of these things, there’s no one to blame but us.  Yet, we choose to remain silent.  So, I ask you today,   Why are we silent? Why don’t we care about the planet we live on?  I believe that by choosing to remain silent over the environmental issues, we are doing a disgrace to the very act of humanity.  Ain’t we ought to save this environment while we still can?  I know that since time immemorial, we have grown up learning about sustainability. In the most literal sense, we PREACH sustainability. But when it comes to bringing that into practice, our values shy away.  All of a sudden, we start to run short of time. You know why? The reason is we don’t appreciate our environment, anymore. And, that’s the root cause that is holding us back in the pathway towards sustainability.  I still remember when I was 10 years old, my father and I had this really nice ritual of going to the park for evening walks. Back then, it just didn’t matter what headspace we’re in, the air of calmness that surrounded the park would just put us at ease. It was THAT therapeutic!   But, coming back to this so-called modern mechanized era, we’ve parted our ways with this ritual. Now, in these times, even the thought of going to a park sounds cliché to all of us!   We need to learn to appreciate, nurture, and love our environment in order to save it. Because it all begins at home! You and I CAN make the difference and now is the time to inculcate sustainable lifestyle habits. The first step here can be as simple as cutting down the waste we produce in the environment. Be it in terms of buying packaged fruits and vegetables from a farmers’ market or making the area you live in litter-free. Moving ahead, the next step might sound a bit difficult because let’s face it- We ALL love shopping! But, when it comes to leading a sustainable lifestyle, minimalism is the key. Start prioritizing every single time you shop for something. When you do this, you value things you own and don’t end up wasting so much.  Gladly, to our relief, the world isn’t that pessimistic. In this age of globalization, we now have people as ‘environmental influencers’ initiating a call for action. Let’s shower our love and support towards them by drawing inspiration from them.  Therefore, I now say,  Let’s pledge to align our values and actions.  Let’s pledge to spend more time in nature.  And most important of all, let’s pledge to save this planet while we are on this planet.

A warm welcome to one & all present here. Today we are here to discuss the very burning topic of the decade that is pollution. According to a report by the World Health Organization, eleven out of twelve cities with the highest levels of particulate pollution are located in India. A study says 86% of the Indian water bodies are deemed critically polluted. Land pollution has resulted in a loss of around 25 billion tons of valuable soil each year.

As per the Global Burden of Disease Report by the World Health Organization, the prevalence of hearing loss was estimated to be 6.3% in India due to noise pollution. These are the few reports which have become often in today’s media & still we are not serious about the problem. Air Pollution in India has become a severe problem. As per a study, at least 140 million people in India breathe air that is ten times over the safe limit.

57% of the total air pollution are by the industries, 27% by vehicles, 17% by crop burning & around 5% by Diwali fireworks. India, as a country, is the third-largest greenhouse gas producer after China and the United States. There is a decrease in the Air Quality Index of all the major cities of the country. All these have resulted in an increase in several airborne diseases & the premature deaths in India.

Now the second type of pollution which has impacted is water pollution. The largest source of water pollution is untreated sewage. Other factors include agricultural runoff & unregulated small scale industries, solid wastes etc. These factors have resulted in contamination of both surface water & groundwater. Lack of toilets & defecation is also adding to the cause. Many rivers water has been declared unfit for domestic use due to high pollution with organic matter.

Not only humans but also the life in water is getting adversely affected by this.Now let us briefly discuss the land degradation. Soil Contamination or land pollution is caused by xenobiotic chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil. It is due to the intensive farming, deforestation, improper disposal of wastes & industrial activities. Except for these few major pollution’s, there are several other types of pollution’s like noise pollution, light pollution, plastic pollution which has been ignored since long.

Pollution cannot be seen or felt, but its effects are evident on the earth & the biodiversity. Global warming, increase in sea level, extinction of species, scarcity of drinking water, decrease in air quality, acid rain etc. are few major impacts which are posing a threat to the existence of human life on earth. To sum it up, all types of pollution’s are detrimental to the planet & comes with terrible consequences.

All of us must take steps to bring the changes in industries to the individual level. A joint effort by the government & the citizens will curb the situation from getting worse. So let us make a stand for our mother earth & listen to its pains to save it from the upcoming global calamity.

Pollution has also led to many more serious problems like global warming , melting of polar ice, ozone layer depletion, and climatic disturbances on a global level. The reasons are many & all of us need to acknowledge that we have created a threat to life on earth. The consequences of pollution are hazardous. We must become more alert & proactive towards the situation & make every effort to turn the situation another way around.

The most important factors causing harmful environmental effects are various human activities and the high growth of population groups.

Let's explore some of the destructive activities of mankind: humans have always cut down trees to make way for agriculture, wood and use of plants. There are a few great forests left, namely the Amazon and the large forests of Indonesia. These are threatened by people who exploit them for logging or to clear them for palm oil production, which is highly valued worldwide. The international community should assist Brazil and Indonesia to save these precious resources from deforestation.

Humanity is filling the atmosphere with greenhouse gases such as CO 2 and other harmful industrial and fossil fuel emissions. Global warming is caused by hydrofluorocarbons and CFCs from refrigeration found in air conditioners. Plastic waste, which causes sea life like dolphins to die from stomach problems, pollutes the oceans. 

What are the imminent dangers: According to the official NASA website, staggering CO 2 emissions are greater than the previous 400,000 years. The earth has heated up by 0.8 degrees since 1880, with other harmful emissions such as greenhouse gasses released by coal and natural gas and HFCs. Some scientists believe that by the end of the century, the earth may warm up by an incredible 6 degrees, according to Business Insider and NASA. Under the Paris Accord, nations have promised to keep global warming down to 1.5 per cent. The most recent warming on record has been in the last 20 years. 

For life on Earth, what does this mean? To say the least, the outlook is gloomy unless attitudes change. 

The best way to protect and save the environment is to make people aware of the fact that what the environment provides us with and the impact on us that will be caused by environmental degradation. The warming of the earth by human activities is a major cause for concern. If nothing is done, illness, hunger and flooding will be a major problem this century as the earth gets hotter, ice melts and water levels rise. Large chunks of agricultural land will be flooded. 

We can actively participate in the campaign to save the Earth when all human beings learn the importance of the environment.  We can cease using plastic bags and reusable plastic straws on a personal level. When we go shopping, we can use fabric and other reusable bags. With palm oil, we can try to use fewer products that cause widespread deforestation. By eating less meat, we can reduce our carbon footprint; large-scale farming generates enormous amounts of CO 2 from cattle emissions and maintenance. I hope that if each of us has decided to make the environment good, then for the next generation, we will be able to pass on a green environment.

Besides, excess pollution leads to multiple respiratory problems, such as asthma or lung cancer. It is also said to affect farming. I would like all of you to consider contributing to the protection of the environment and to make other people aware of this as well. You can help save our environment.

2. What is UNEP?

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), established in 1972, addresses environmental issues at the global and indigenous position for the United Nations. UNEP’s charge is “ to give leadership and encourage cooperation in minding the terrain by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to ameliorate their quality of life without compromising that of unborn generations.” 

To negotiate its charge, 

UNEP assesses environmental conditions and trends at the global, indigenous and public situations; develops transnational agreements and public environmental instruments; and strengthens institutions for wise environmental operation. 

UNEP is governed by the United Nations Environment Assembly, a council with a universal class that sets the UNEP docket. 

3. Explain the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986?

The Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 authorizes the central government to cover and ameliorate environmental quality, control and reduce pollution from all sources, and enjoin or circumscribe the setting and/ or operation of any artificial installation on environmental grounds. The Environment (Protection) Act was legislated in 1986 with the idea of furnishing for the protection and enhancement of the terrain. It empowers the Central Government to establish authorities charged with the accreditation of precluding environmental pollution in all its forms and to attack specific environmental problems that are peculiar to different corridors of the country. The Act was last amended in 1991. 

The Environment (Protection) Rules lay down procedures for setting norms of emigration or discharge of environmental adulterants. 

4. What is the Biological Diversity Act 2002?

The Biological Diversity Act 2002 and Biological Diversity Rules give for the conservation of natural diversity, sustainable use of its factors, and fair and indifferent sharing of the benefits arising out of the use of natural coffers and knowledge associated with it. 

5. What is the National Green Tribunal Act, 2010?

Under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 for effective and prepared disposal of cases concerning environmental protection and conservation of timbers and other natural coffers including enforcement of any legal right concerning terrain and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property and matters connected therewith or incidental thereto. The Tribunal's devoted governance in environmental matters shall give speedy environmental justice and help reduce the burden of action within the advanced courts.

We should understand the importance of the natural environment, try to deduce our non-eco-friendly activities, and imperatively plant as many trees as possible and save water, which are the two biggest issues.

The world has recognized that our environment is not as it was before. Our environment consists of 5 elements- Air, Water, Land, Fire, and Sky and we have disturbed the process of the entire ecosystem by cutting the vast amount of trees that contribute the most to balancing the environmental cycle, installment of large polluting industries, hunting/poaching of animals leading towards their endangerment, etc.

Out of this, the question arises what kind of future we want or what kind of future we will hand over to our next generations? Is this the kind of development we all have dreamt about? Walking with a mask on our faces, struggling in floods and earthquakes, destruction of animals who aren’t even aware of what’s happening.

Now, this is high time we need to recognize the importance of our natural environment and try every possible action towards saving it, from saving water to planting trees.

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers, and my dear friends. The topic of my speech is Environment. The environment is the surrounding in which we live. It is the source of life. Our whole life is dependent on the environment. It directs our life and determines our proper growth and development.

The good or bad quality of social life depends on our natural environment. Human beings need food, water, shelter, and other things depending on their environment. A balanced natural cycle exists between the environment and the lives of humans, plants, and animals. Human society plays a vital role in degenerating the natural environment, negatively affecting this planet’s lives. All the human actions in this modern world directly impact the whole ecosystem.

All the actions have brought a big change to this planet, resulting in many environmental problems. The increasing demand for technologies and industries in modern times impacts nature. Modern technologies have immense power and have altered the whole environment in an unimagined way. The indiscriminate use of the environment is the root of the ecological crisis. Such continuous increases in technologies and human behavior are correspondingly very serious. Such amazing technologies became the reason for economic growth in the 20 th century; however, they dramatically affected natural resources.

Environmental problems include rapid growth in world population, deteriorating natural resources, diminishing forests and wetlands, erosion of soil and coral reefs, depleting underground water, regular shortage of fresh drinking water, vanishing plants, and salinization in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Some other issues are loss of biodiversity, rapid extinction of some important animal species, collapse of fisheries, rising air and water pollution, rise in atmospheric temperature, thinning of ozone layer, spoiling rivers, seas and underground resources.

Even though science and technology have radically altered the terms of adaptation to the nature, we still need to adapt to the environment. Human society is embedded in an environment. We must not forget that the human being is first and foremost an animal, sharing living space with other animal species in an environment on which they are mutually dependent. It is our responsibility to save our environment and earth and make the possibility of healthy and happy life here.

Good morning to the Excellencies, my respected teachers, and my dear friends. As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to speech over Environment. To run life in a healthy, happy way, we all need a healthy and natural environment. Continuously increasing the human population adversely affects the forests. Human beings are cutting forests to a great extent to make their home live securely; however, they do not think of the problems arising from the lack of forests.

It completely disturbs the natural cycle between the environment and life on the earth. Because of the over-population, the number of various chemical elements is increasing in the atmosphere which ultimately causes irregular rainfall and global warming. We cannot imagine the negative effects of global warming on the climate and the lives of human beings and other living species.

According to the research, it is found that the perennial snow mountains of Tibet were covered by thick snow in the past; however, those thick snows are getting very thin day by day over the last few decades because of global warming. Such a condition is a very dangerous situation and an indication of the end of life on earth, which needs to be taken very seriously by all countries worldwide. It is very true that climate change goes very slow; the however, slow continuous process is very dangerous.

Because of the regular changes in the environment physical structure of human beings and other living species has been changed from generation to generation. Increasing human population needs more land for agricultural cultivation and living purpose, which force them to cut more trees and forests, so deforestation has its dangerous side effects.

The increasing the level of industrialization has countless harmful effects on the atmosphere because of the poisonous chemical emissions and dangerous waste drainage in the big water resources such as the Yamuna, Ganga, and other rivers. The ever-changing (negatively) environment is not the issue of only some countries or government; it is the issue of whole human fraternity because we all are the reason of this negatively declining environment, so we all are responsible to save our natural environment for the healthy survival of life on the earth.

Protecting the atmosphere is a matter of high importance for all the present and future generations of mankind. The main purpose of my speech today over the environment is only to increase the public awareness among common people about the reasons of declining environment as well as need of healthy and natural environment for the life on earth. So, it is my humble request to all of you that you please contribute to saving your environment.

As we have gathered here to celebrate this occasion, I would like to give a speech on the Environment to increase awareness among the public about the negatively changing environment. An environment is the natural surrounding which covers and protects us from the natural disasters.

However, our healthy and natural environment is getting worse daily and taking the form of demons affecting everything from non-living to living being we know is two types of environ: natural environment and built environment. The natural environment is one that exists naturally, and the one for which man is responsible such as cities etc., is called the built environment. There are many natural and unnatural factors polluting the whole natural atmosphere.

Some of the natural factors like volcanoes, floods, etc. are the reasons for the declining environment. However, manmade reasons are more rampant caused due to reckless and caustic human nature are highly responsible for the environmental pollution. Self centred human activities are highly responsible for the destruction of the environment. Other environmental threats like forest degradation, global warming, pollution, etc. are the reasons for environmental degradation. Continuous increasing temperature of the earth’s surface in the atmosphere because of the many human-made and natural means calls to the various natural calamities causing disturbance to a great extent to the healthy and common life of human and all other living beings.

Our natural environment has become hugely changed in the last few decades and has taken the form of a big and powerful demon affecting the lives of people every single moment. Nature has made everything to run in balance with the natural cycle however many factors causes environmental corrosion. The factors like population growth and economic advancement are considered as the major factors giving rise to many other secondary factors.

We must understand the importance of ecological balance and try our best to run it naturally to prevent the effects of environmental disasters and promote a a healthy environment. We should promote common public in our surroundings for a clean and green environment to prove the meaning of proverbs life “won’t have a society if we destroy the environment.”

Another environment that is completely dependent on human is the socio-cultural environment made by human beings. Whatever environment is, it must be healthy, safe and secure to continue the evergreen life on the earth in present and future.

We should realize our mistakes and concern about the environment in order to keep it clean, safe and secure for a healthy life. Many human activities like deforestation, industrialization, technological improvements, and so many others are leading our environment towards danger and keeping lives at risk by influencing the growth, development, and survival of all organisms.

Various types of environmental pollution, such as water pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, soil pollution, etc., are disturbing the ecosystem and causing a variety of health hazards to human beings and animals. Environmental pollution damages the ecosystem and destroying the delicate balance of the natural ecosystem. Let’s talk about something we all deal with every day: plastic. From the water bottles we drink from to the toys our children play with, plastic is everywhere. But there’s a problem. Plastic pollution is when plastic pieces pile up in our world, hurting our environment and wildlife. Picture this, a beautiful beach, but instead of sand, it’s covered in plastic bottles, bags, and wrappers. That’s plastic pollution. It doesn’t just make our world look dirty; it’s harmful too. It can hurt or even kill animals who think it’s food.

We all throw away plastic, right? But where does it go? A lot of it ends up in our oceans. Every year, we dump around 8 million tons of plastic in our oceans. That’s like taking a garbage truck full of plastic and dumping it into the ocean every minute of every day for a whole year. That’s a lot of plastic! And it’s not good for our fishy friends. They can get trapped in it or eat it by mistake, and that can make them sick or even cause them to die.

But it’s not just about the animals. Plastic pollution affects us too. Have you ever wondered why we’re told to recycle plastic? It’s because it takes a very long time to break down. When plastic finally does break down, it doesn’t completely disappear. It turns into tiny pieces called microplastics. These microplastics are so small that they can get into our water and our food. And when we drink or eat these, it’s not healthy for us.

So, what can we do about it? We can start by using less plastic. Instead of a plastic water bottle, we could use a reusable one. Instead of plastic bags at the store, we could bring our own cloth bags. We can also recycle the plastic we do use, so it doesn’t end up in our oceans or landfills. And we can pick up plastic litter when we see it.

In the end, it’s up to us. We’re the ones who can make a difference. We need to care about plastic pollution because it’s our world, and we need to keep it clean and safe for the animals, the environment, and us.

Good morning everyone present here, today I am going to give a speech on environmental pollution. When external elements known as pollutants contaminate the environment, it is referred to as environmental pollution. These pollutants, which are produced as a result of human activity, might exist in a gaseous, solid, or liquid condition depending on how they were created.

Gases produced as a result of the combustion of fossil fuels include Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Carbon Monoxide (CO), and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2). When present in significant concentrations in the atmosphere, these gases are poisonous by nature and dangerous to breathe.

Industrial trash and waste from human habitation are examples of solid pollutants. They are made up of all different kinds of solid substances, including plastic, metal, wood, and leaves. In addition to polluting our land and soil, solid pollutants also contaminate our water bodies.

On the other hand, liquid pollutants include oil and other petroleum products, chemicals, acids, etc. The industries that produce fuel and petroleum are the principal sources of liquid pollution.

Air, water, and plant life are essential resources that are negatively impacted by environmental pollution, as are human health and life. While water body contamination results in waterborne diseases, air pollution causes respiratory conditions. The crop production in a particular area is impacted by soil contamination as well.

The production of pollutants must be effectively controlled in order to reduce environmental pollution, which requires the adoption of more environmentally friendly policies. Some strategies that could be used to reduce environmental pollution include the use of more environmentally friendly fuel sources and proper waste collection and disposal. Thank you.

Plastic is one of the most ubiquitous materials we manufacture - and we’re making more of it than ever. A comprehensive report from the OECD looking into the plastics lifecycle out to 2060 finds that “ annual production of plastic has more than doubled in the last two decades , and is projected to triple by 2060”.

In 2019, the world was making 460 million tonnes of plastic each year. By 2060, that figure is estimated to hit 1,231 million tonnes, according to OECD projections.

With these projections in mind, the OECD has identified a number of pathways to reduce the world’s reliance on unsustainable production and use of plastic products.

These are organized into four pillars with the emphasis on curbing demand, creating a circular plastics lifecycle, enhancing recycling and more careful waste management to close “leakage pathways” that lead to waste plastic littering the oceans and the environment.

Innovations for more sustainable use of plastics

On the occasion of Earth Day 2024 , we asked entrepreneurs from these early-stage impact-driven start-ups for their vision on how this can be achieved.

How can the world learn to live with plastic in a way that’s viable and sustainable?

Have you read, how empowering local communities can help solve global plastic waste, how to bring back circular models of consumption, data benefits ghana’s fight against plastic pollution, trashcon labs.

TrashCon operates automated systems for separating mixed waste into recyclable groups. They currently have 15 sites across India and are planning to expand globally.

Nivedha RM, CEO says: “The problem of plastics is like a giant mountain and all of us are but mere ants in front of it. We can only hope to solve the problem - as activists, policymakers and technology developers - if all of us come together with only one goal in mind; to ensure plastics do not end up in landfills, oceans or being incinerated, which only leads to further environmental impact."

Green Mining

This Brazilian innovator uses blockchain to power its reverse logistics systems for consumer packaging. Their technology ensures that all collected material is tracked, weighed and recorded at each stage for proper disposal.

Company CEO, Rodrigo Oliveira says: “Plastic's versatility and multipurpose nature render it incredibly valuable in enhancing the lives of the population. Given its immense value, it's imperative that we maximize its utility by embracing continuous use, reuse, refilling, and return practices. The plastics industry must rally around solutions that prioritize infinite reuse, thereby shifting away from single-use applications. By aligning efforts with the objectives of a plastic treaty focused on sustainable reuse, we can unite investors and environmentalists in pursuit of a shared goal.”

More than 90% of plastic is never recycled, and a whopping 8 million metric tons of plastic waste are dumped into the oceans annually. At this rate, there will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050.

The Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) is a collaboration between businesses, international donors, national and local governments, community groups and world-class experts seeking meaningful actions to beat plastic pollution.

In Ghana, for example, GPAP is working with technology giant SAP to create a group of more than 2,000 waste pickers and measuring the quantities and types of plastic that they collect. This data is then analysed alongside the prices that are paid throughout the value chain by buyers in Ghana and internationally.

It aims to show how businesses, communities and governments can redesign the global “take-make-dispose” economy as a circular one in which products and materials are redesigned, recovered and reused to reduce environmental impacts.

Eco Panplas

Eco Panplas is a Brazilian company which has developed a technological solution that performs the decontamination and recycling of plastic packaging in an ecological way without the use of water, and without waste generation.

Founder Felipe Cardoso says: “By building a circular plastics economy with the participation of consumers, manufacturers, public authorities and recyclers, we can ensure that more and more plastic waste can be reused, often by re-making the original product from waste material. When we do this, we generate economic and socio-environmental benefits for all and we tread more lightly on the planet.”

AIR COMPANY

AIR COMPANY is a technology firm producing sustainable fuels and chemicals from captured CO2 and renewable electricity. One of its key products is a sustainable form of methanol which can help to reduce the carbon footprint of plastic production.

AIR COMPANY spokesperson said: “AIR COMPANY's e-methanol, AIRMADE Methanol, is carbon-negative, meaning plastics made from it can serve as long-term CO2 storage. Consequently, using AIRMADE Methanol as a chemical feedstock can reduce the carbon footprint of various industries that depend on it, including plastics."

Pollution from these sources can cause air, land, and water pollution.

Pollution is of many types as you all know and some pollutants are quite common that we take part in our daily works but we don't even think about it.

Air pollution is perhaps the most harmful type of pollution. It is caused by the burning of fossil fuels such as coal, gasoline, and diesel. This releases pollutants such as carbon dioxide and other gasses into the atmosphere. These pollutants may lead to the development of respiratory diseases and cognitive illnesses. Particulate matter pollution is a growing concern in many cities since it causes severe damage to the lining of the respiratory tract.

Land pollution is caused by the disposal of waste products on land. This can include garbage, chemicals, and other materials that can contaminate the soil. It can also lead to the destruction of natural habitats, which can drastically reduce biodiversity. Soil pollution leads to the loss of minerals from the soil and an increase in toxic elements such as chromium, cadmium, zinc, arsenic, etc.

Water pollution is caused by the release of chemicals and other pollutants in water sources. This can include things like sewage, fertilizers, and other industrial waste. It can also lead to the destruction of aquatic life and the contamination of drinking water

Pollution is a major environmental issue that has been affecting our planet for decades. It refers to the presence of harmful substances in the air, water, and soil that can cause harm to living organisms and their habitats. The sources of pollution can be both natural and man-made. Natural causes include volcanic eruptions, forest fires, and dust storms, while man-made sources include industrial activities, transportation, and waste disposal.

These pollutants can have severe impacts on human health, such as respiratory problems, heart disease, and cancer. They can also contribute to global warming and the changing of climate patterns. In addition to the health impacts, air pollution also affects the visibility and quality of life in cities and can have negative impacts on ecosystems and wildlife.

Water Pollution | Water pollution is another major issue, caused by the discharge of toxic chemicals, sewage, and other waste into our waterways. This not only affects the water quality and its ability to support life, but can also contaminate the soil and affect crops. In addition, toxic chemicals can enter the food chain and harm animals and humans who consume contaminated fish and other seafood.

Soil Pollution | Soil pollution is another form of environmental degradation that can have significant impacts on the health of our planet. This can occur through the use of toxic chemicals in agriculture and industry, as well as through the improper disposal of waste. Soil pollution can lead to reduced crop yields and soil fertility, as well as cause harm to wildlife and contribute to groundwater contamination.

What Can We Do | In order to reduce the effects of pollution, it is necessary for individuals, businesses, and governments to take action. This can include reducing the use of harmful chemicals, improving waste management practices, and promoting the use of renewable energy sources. In addition, individuals can reduce their own carbon footprint by conserving energy, reducing waste, and using public transportation.

In conclusion, pollution is a serious issue that affects the health of our planet and its inhabitants. It is important for all of us to take action to reduce its impacts and protect the environment for future generations. Whether it is through reducing our own carbon footprint or advocating for changes in policy, every individual has a role to play in the fight against pollution.

Flint Water Crisis

A real-life incident of pollution occurred in Flint, Michigan in 2014, when the city switched its water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. The river water was not properly treated and as a result, lead contamination was found in the city's drinking water. The lead contamination caused serious health problems for the residents, including developmental delays in children and increased rates of lead poisoning.

The incident brought attention to the issue of water pollution and the importance of proper treatment and testing of drinking water. The government was criticized for not taking action to address the problem quickly enough and for not providing adequate resources to the affected residents.

This Earth Day, Taking Action on Plastic Pollution, Extreme Heat, and Methane Emissions

USAID Announces additional $35.7 million in new funding for Save Our Seas

Imagine a garbage truck full of plastic: old food containers, water bottles, wrapping from packages delivered to your door. That’s the amount of plastic waste that is dumped into the ocean every single minute. What’s worse, as demand for plastics grows, experts estimate that by 2030, this rate will increase to the equivalent of two garbage trucks per minute – and by 2040, three garbage trucks per minute.

Plastic pollution is becoming inescapable. Microplastics – tiny pieces of plastic so small that the human eye cannot easily see them – are now contaminating the food we eat , the air we breathe , the water we drink , and, unsurprisingly, our bodies themselves . Much of this plastic pollution comes from mismanaged waste that is openly dumped into the ocean as well as fields, pits, and rivers, and then leaks into the broader environment. Once plastic gets into the environment, it is extremely difficult and expensive to remove.

This year, as the world commemorates the 54th annual Earth Day with the theme “Planet versus Plastics,” USAID is joining others throughout the global community in committing to do our part to drastically reduce plastic pollution.

In 2022, I announced a landmark initiative to help stop plastic from getting into the environment in the first place: the Save Our Seas Initiative . Save Our Seas works with local and national governments, businesses, civil society, and other organizations to help countries reduce, reuse, and recycle plastic. So far, Save Our Seas has helped prevent more than 99,000 metric tons of plastic from getting into the environment – the equivalent of 10.7 billion plastic bottles.

Today, I am pleased to announce that USAID, working together with Congress, intends to provide an additional $35.7 million in new funding for the Save Our Seas Initiative.

We are also launching our largest country partnership to date with the Government of India. Led by an India-based consortium, this program will work hand-in-hand with local governments to develop and implement Plastic Reduction Action Plans; partner with the private sector to invest in recycling and plastic-alternative innovations; promote sustained behavior change in schools to reduce plastic use and plastic waste; and support social protections, fair wages, and recognition by the government for informal waste workers. Working with Congress, USAID intends to invest $11.25 million in these efforts.

Of course, while plastic pollution is an urgent threat, it is far from the only challenge our planet faces today. On January 30, I spoke at Johns Hopkins about the pressing need to help communities develop and implement tools to prepare for this era of so-called climate shocks: extreme weather events that have become so common they can no longer be characterized as “shocking.” Indeed, just in the months since my remarks, record heat led to deadly wildfires sweeping across South America ; countries in Southern Europe and North Africa imposed water rations in the face of severe drought ; and the U.S. Census Bureau announced that just last year, disasters forced 2.5 million Americans to flee their homes .

While 2023 was the hottest year on record, this year is expected to be even hotter. Here in the United States, heat is already deadlier than hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes combined. So last month, USAID and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies hosted the first Global Summit on Extreme Heat to help countries grapple with our planet’s fast-growing temperatures. We kicked off two months of action and called on governments, companies, universities, and NGOs to work together to develop, implement, and scale solutions. We also launched a central virtual hub to organize and track progress across sectors. But of course, as we work together to help countries build resilience to climate-induced disasters, we also need to continue ramping up our efforts to help countries reduce the emissions that are driving these intensifying disasters in the first place.

One of the most powerful ways to do so is to reduce methane pollution, which is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide at warming the planet in the near term. We know that we can make progress here by making fairly simple changes to our existing programming. For instance, in Kenya, Feed the Future teams reduced methane emissions from cows by 28 percent while increasing milk productivity by 43 percent – just by improving the cows’ diets. In the Dominican Republic, we supported a local community in cleaning up a landfill – and in doing so, reduced emissions from decomposing waste that amounted to the equivalent of burning three million gallons of gasoline per year.

From plastic pollution to extreme heat to methane emissions, the challenges facing our planet are daunting – but we see real progress when we come together and invest in solutions. So this Earth Day, we recommit to taking action toward a more resilient, sustainable, and equitable world.

Earth Day: An Opportunity to Address the Environmental Injustice of Plastic Pollution

An overwhelming body of research highlights the pervasive harms of plastic pollution in our environment and health. Manufacturers make plastics from fossil fuels. A new report from Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory states that plastic production generates four times the polluting greenhouse gases emitted by the airline industry. Additionally, this pollution is growing, and its scope could multiply by the middle of the 21 st century. These impacts could be devastating for the planet, even if the energy required to produce plastics shifts towards electricity over time due to the material involved in plastic production. The plastics industry has long-argued that recycling is an effective way to address this problem, however this is simply not the case . The industry playbook has long used tactics to distort and cover up evidence of harms from the fossil fuel and linked plastics industry for decades.

Effects on Health

Plastics also harm the environment through the harmful pollutants released from factories in the production process and via landfills that are disproportionately located in poor and minoritized communities , and by breaking down into microplastics that further harm all organisms and accumulate across the food chain. Microplastics are pervasive across our environment and have wide-ranging health harms. These substances are in our food, water, land, and air, and they end up in our organs, where they cause a variety of harmful impacts , including affecting our metabolism, causing cancer, and reducing fertility. We already know that there are wide-ranging, and accelerating health impacts from global climate change fueled by greenhouse gas emissions. These combined impacts demonstrate the fundamental interconnectedness of the health of our planet and the health of all living beings – what we call planetary health . This week UN delegates will be negotiating a plastics treaty in Ottawa, Canada. This is a critical opportunity to create a binding treaty to reduce plastic production, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and clean up pollution that has already caused profound, and inequitable harms.
