There is no need to be shocked or surprised because Dreams do not align with the reality of the lives one leads. They can be very peculiar and it is because Dreams are often the suppressed thoughts and feelings of our subconscious mind. The world of Dreams is the uncharted territory of wild imagination and wishful thinking. And even scientists believe that Dreams occur during REM (rapid-eye movement) Sleep. Dreams carry with them a lot of emotion that can make it difficult to tell them apart from reality. That is why when one Dreams of something horrific or frightening they tend to breathe rapidly and wake up perspiring and with clammy hands. REM Sleep should be uninterrupted as an intervention may lead to health concerns related to memory consolidation, making it difficult to learn and retain information. Babies or infants have very high learning abilities and one of the main reasons is the deep REM Sleep cycle without interruption.

The dream can be a short one of mere seconds or a few minutes or even a long 20-30 minute one. When one wakes up during their REM Sleep they are more likely to remember the dream.

There are some Dreams that one sees with their eyes open when they go about their lives every day. Dreams that can be considered relatively realistic, that one intends to achieve. They can be called goals, ambitions or just Dreams. These kinds of Dreams can fuel us and inculcate a drive to make strides in achieving the same.

However, there are very few who make their Dreams come true, through an uncanny combination of determination, hard work and willpower. Many fall prey to their self-created victim narrative and don’t dream of a better life. They find an excuse and become lazy without trying to achieve and chase their Dreams. So in the name of safety and security, they don’t take the risks.

The world would be so different if people didn’t dream big and take chances. The world we live in today with comfortable luxuries is a reality because somebody dreamt big and worked to make it a reality. We live in their work of inventions long after they are gone. So to make a difference, on an individual level or for the sake of society do not fret failures. To err is human and failures are part of everyone’s journey, you will only learn what not to do. Failure teaches us more than success. So, dream big, be brave and take chances.

But is it possible to imagine this world in an advanced state when people dream and do not dare to make it happen?

Life undoubtedly presents challenges in pursuing our Dreams, but in this situation, one gives up or continues to work towards them despite obstacles. It's not easy, but it's certainly not impossible. When you dream, you have to put it into action, sweat and blood.

Many failures can occur while we are working on our Dreams, but these failures do not prevent us from going the way, but ours that we can achieve what we want. It should strengthen your beliefs and beliefs. Dreams are a constant driving force and give meaning to life. Still, I would like to mention that we also need to have a positive outlook on life and be always ready to stay one step ahead in order to realize our Dreams.

Respected Teachers and My Dear Fellow Students – Good Morning to all of you!

As we have been studying Freud’s Psychology, we are gaining knowledge about a lot many things, such as ego, super ego and alter ego. And also how dreams function, which are a result of our repressed psychology. Since today’s session is on the same subject, I want to take out a few moments in order to deliver a short speech on dreams.

We all dream, right! While some experience a weird dream, some very happening, some full of horror and some just beyond explanation. But howsoever our dreams are; they tell a lot about our mental status and the psychological conditions of our brain. Last night, I came across a very strange dream where I am trying to rise up the ladder and weren’t able to get at the top. I was perspiring hard, falling, rising and was again repeating the same exercise.

When I woke up today, I couldn’t understand what it was and what it is trying to convey. But after linking it up with my studies, I realized that it is so much a part of my mental makeup. I realized that I am very ambitious and persistently working on my set goal, i.e. to gain gold medals in Mathematics Olympiad continuously 3 times in a row. So rising on a ladder means trying to achieve our target which is high up there and falling implies failures. But in my dream I did not give up and was doing the same thing tirelessly. This suggests my steadfast nature and an ambitious spirit.

This dream made me very uncomfortable and disturbed my inner being to the core. But since I have gained the ability to interpret my dreams, I realized that it was a clear reflection of my mental state of being. This bleeding part implies that I was in some urgent help and didn’t get any help from my near or dear ones. Since my childhood, I have always been insecure about my relationships – whether it’s my family or friends. I am extremely sensitive and get disheartened when my closest of people tend to ignore me. My dream therefore is a clear reflection of my insecure nature.

Having said this, I would still like to emphasize the point that it is very important that we share our dreams with our family or friends and do not simply keep it to ourselves if it disturbs us much. Besides, we should also try and analyze our dreams because if we can come to its root cause and put some efforts in solving it, we will gain inner strength and confidence. That’s all I have to say!

I hope you all have had a nice weekend and made it to the most. To all the children – I hope you also enjoyed your long weekend and got to play with your friends as much as you could, but also took out time to study.

As I have been observing all the students and wanted to take an interactive session in the presence of everyone, including your parents so that we all can discuss our dreams and aims in life and what we ultimately aspire to become. As parents perhaps we have become old enough to really have any ambition in life. But really it knows no age and gender. We can turn old and still aspire to be famous and rich. However, ambition-driven life is more apt for the youth, students and working professionals. So here I am to deliver a short speech on dreams and discuss with each other what is it that we all aim to become.

Dreams, as well all know, are an integral part of everyone’s lives for without them there would be no meaning in life. Our lives will then become like a lost ship on a sea sailing aimlessly without any direction. I am sure no one would want to see himself/herself in such a terrible situation as this. Without dreams, life would be like chasing an unseen shadow, which has no substance and no meaning whatsoever.

Therefore, we need to have some dreams in life – whether big or small. Even people who gained success in life had dreams to chase which made them what they are today. Interestingly, such people do not give up dreaming and one after the other set new benchmarks in life to go high up in the ladder of success. If we will have no dream and nothing to work towards, life would certainly become aimless and monotonous. We will lose interest in life and ultimately start hating it. It is only with dreams or ambitions; we see our lives finding a meaning in life. We become confident and gain a new perception of life.

There may come many failures while working towards our dreams, but those failures should not deter us from our path rather strengthen our belief and faith in ourselves that we can achieve what we want to. Dreams are a constant driving factor and give us a purpose in life. Having said this, I would also like to mention that we should also cultivate a positive attitude towards life and should always be ready to walk an extra mile for accomplishing our dreams.

Today, before I commence my speech on Dreams, kindly allow me to make a special mention of our guests of honor, Dr. Shamita Pathak (Psychologist) and Dr. Nishant Patnaik (Senior Psychologist in XYZ Hospital) who made their presence here despite their hectic schedule. I also want to thank our hon’ble principal and vice principal for making this event happen and also taking out their precious time for today. Nothing would have been possible without the constant support of our staff teachers and our dear students who never said ‘No’ for any work.

Now, if I talk about the important role that dream plays in our lives, it would be difficult to sum up in a few words. However, I can put it this way that a man with no dreams is similar to a bird that has no wings and thus cannot fly. Often people are seen criticizing others as a day dreamer. But is it possible to imagine this world in a progressive state, if its people cannot dare to dream and make it come true?

If you dream, it needs to be translated into actions and sweat and blood need to be shed. Undermining the importance of dreams would mean causing offense to the agency of human imagination. History has it that men with an exceptional level of endurance power and strength of character overcame the most difficult of situations and never undervalued their dreams.

Likewise, the great emperor Ashoka took the world by storm at the time of his Kalinga victory and took a decision of not following the path of victory achieved through bloodshed and warfare. He used to dream of a world where righteousness or what is also called “Dharma” could prevail and he did whatever he could do in his capacity to realize his dream.

Then there was Akbar – the emperor who dreamt of a secular India where the differences between the Muslims and Hindus could be eliminated forever based on a common faith, i.e. Din-i-Illahi. Even though his dream of a secular India could not become much successful then, but whatever he could do in order that the Muslims and Hindus could come together was never surpassed in our Indian history even till date. In fact, our Indian freedom struggle has plenty of examples of those dreamers, i.e. from Lala Lajpat Rai to Mahatma Gandhi, etc who had the power of conviction and were able to make their dreams come true.

Therefore, even we should also not give up on our dreams and make it come true through our persistent hard work.

First of all I would like to thank my audience for making their presence here in such a large number and making it so overwhelming for us. Today, I am going to deliver a speech on Dreams and share with you how important it is to dream and have an aim in life.

What true success actually is? How to have a successful life? Why only a handful of people achieve success while others fail? What is the key to success? These are some of the questions that always hover in the minds of millions of people. There is no denying that everyone wishes to become successful and earn name and fame. Some people have this thinking that if they gather a lot of bank balance and have a big car outside their house, they will be successful. I have personally observed in people who have a huge bank balance they do not have substantial relationships. Would you really call it success?

What I call success in true sense of the term is when one achieves success in terms of health, prosperity, relation and spirituality. These, I believe, are the four pillars of leading a happy, healthy and successful life.

In case we have a lot of dreams, but also have a sense of fear towards accomplishing those dreams, then we will not be able to achieve anything. Fear is that phenomenon which makes our brain inactive and leaves it incapable of doing anything. Fear of failure prevents us from embarking on our dreams. It leaves us in a depressed state and makes us question ourselves “What if I fail in my endeavors, what will happen then?”

If you really want to transform your dream into reality, then you will have to learn the art of overcoming your fear and fighting back. Fear has a tendency of frustrating you even before you take a step ahead. It can leave you shattered. So keep your fear at bay and cultivate courage within yourself. If you are courageous and have a firm faith in yourself, you can even destroy a mountain. Impossible becomes possible!

Opportunities do not strike again and again. We tend to lose many opportunities in life simply because we lack enough courage to do things. Every time we leave things on ‘tomorrow’ and say from tomorrow I will make a fresh start. Tomorrow never comes. If you cannot begin now; then perhaps tomorrow also will never come! You can at least start taking small steps because beginning is very important. The people in Japan know this secret because they start their regular job and achieve their goal at any cost. If harmonium, guitar or dance is what you want to learn, then start learning it without any delay, i.e. without waiting for tomorrow. Who knows whether tomorrow will come or not! If you begin taking small steps, then one day you will surely find your way.

So dare to dream and make it come true with your sheer perseverance and hard work.

Model Answers

Yes, I do. I have quite vivid dreams about things that are going on in my life at the time and I even have nightmares sometimes.
No. I usually sleep very deeply and so I don’t dream at all.
I used to dream all the time but in the last few years I’ve hardly had any dreams at all.
I usually have dreams when I’m upset about something. I guess it’s my subconscious trying to work things out. But other than that, I don’t often dream.
No, they’re usually very vague and I only remember the odd thing or image. But I can never remember the entire dream as they are too abstract.
No, luckily I don’t remember them as they are almost always nightmares.
Yes, I do. I remember almost every dream I have. I keep a dream diary so that I can analyse them later.
No, I don’t. I think dreams are nonsense and not based in reality so I don’t think people should waste their time trying to find a meaning in them.

Yes, I do. I know dreaming of a snake means that enemies are close. And if you dream of your teeth falling out, it means a big change will happen in your life. I think dreams are very symbolic.

Hi Liz, I thought I’d drop a message and share my experience here in your blog. I just literally finished my speaking exam today here in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

After the introduction Part1 -Do you study or work? -What’s your work? -Why did you choose your job? -Where do you go on a day out? (I asked him if it’s an ordinary day out? He just repeated the question) -What interesting thing you saw in your day out? -Do you like going out alone or with friends? -Who do you normally go out with? *can’t remember the rest

Part2 Favorite building -what it is? -why do you like it? -what/how does it looked like? -what’s the building for? *i forgot the other one, all the prompt questions you have for building topic in your blog came out in my part2

Then the interviewer asked me if i’m fascinated with buildings, i just said yes, then my part3 was all about building and society. (Not the exact questions as they were lengthy) – how much do you think the government should regulate the buildings? -do you think external design is a waste of money in constructing a building? -what things should be considered in constructing a building? -how a building affects people’s work and life? (Something like that) *there was a question where i understood it differently, he stopped me then he paraphrased the question

I never thought 15mins was so fast! Even the part2, i thought i cant fill the 2mins but i was stopped. I talked fast too maybe because i was nervous. I just wanted to share my experience here as all the comments of experiences had been very helpfull to me. Liz you are a heaven sent! Thank you very much for doing what you are doing. You are helping a lot of people.

Tomorrow is my L-R-W exams, wish me and my husband luck as we are both taking the exams.

Lastly, my tip is to prepare ideas (not memorize) on all the topics on this blog. You’ll never know what you will get. I was smiling when i saw my topic as I had prepared ideas about it.

In the speaking test …i spoke about 1. 40 on the cue card ..is it okay ….or there will be negative marking

There is no negative marking. Your fluency score is based on your overall performance. Of course, it’s good to speak for 2 mins, but it isn’t a requirement.

Could we use words like “You can say that ” “You know ” in Ielts Speaking ?

It is fine to use informal language in the IELTS speaking test.

No we can not use informal words in ielts speaking test because informal words is wrong for ielts speaking test so we can only use formal words in speaking test

As an ex-IELTS examiner I can say – the speaking test is informal.

I found this very useful. Thank you very much. Well there’s one thing I’d like to ask: At the above we have topic for part 1 about dreams. What I want to ask is which tenses should we use when we want to say that we remember what happen in my dream and want was happen in our dream?

For example my question for answer no. 2: “Yes I do. I often remember what I saw and feel during my sleep. My late father come then he hug me, he say he miss me” (or) “my late father came the he hugged me. He said he miss me.”

Which tenses is correct? Because this is something happen in the past which is not actually happen.

Yes I do. I often remember what I saw and felt during my dreams. In some dreams, my late father came to me and then he hugged me. He would say that he missed me”. The dream is finished – over. This means you use the past to describe it.

Hi Liz, Thank you. you are doing a great job by helping others. it is a good source. I had my speaking test today. I am sharing a few questions that I remember from today’s test. Part 1: 1.Have you ever been on a boat? 2. Do plan to be on a boat someday? 3. Do you think you could buy a boat in future? 4. Why do you think it is important to reach in time for an interview? 5. Do you think people in the past gave more importance to time management? Part 2: Cue card- Describe a leisure facility (e.g cinema, theatre, sports centre etc) that should be made available in your hometown. Why is this facility important? What can be done to make it available? What role would it play?/ What kind of people can use it?

Part 3: It was about leisure activities like what importance such activities have in our lives? How people choose different leisure activities? Has this choice changed over the decades? How the choices of older people change ( in the context of leisure activities only). Why some people choose risky activities?

There were few more questions in all the parts which I don’t remember now.

An advice to the test takers- those who are learning new words to improve their vocabulary, please try to use those words on a daily basis because learning/ memorizing alone won’t help. Don’t stop until you are asked to. Don’t give the examiner a chance to tell you to speak more.

Hi Liz, How can I answer this question? Is my answer enough for speaking part 1? Thanks What kind of dishes do you cook? I used to cooked chicken dishes, which I find very easy to prepare and is always available in supermarkets aside from that you can do a variety of experiment with the chicken like for example adding pineapple while boiling it with a milk, the combination of its sweetness and creamy flavor will surely remains unforgetable taste.

It doesn’t matter if your answer is too long. The examiner will stop you when it’s time to move to the next question. However, the question asks “What dishes DO you cook” – this means mean. Your answer is in the past tense. Pay attention to the grammar in the question and answer appropriately.

But if you talk about an IELTS website, also try include other aspects: social media communication educational videos layout / content / style / appearance Try to include as much as you can in your description and that way you can steer the talk away from only IELTS and into other aspects of online media.

Americans are the only native speakers I have communicated with. 2. Can I distribute time unequally (extremely unequally) among the answers in Part 1 and Part 3? For instance, I would like to answer about sports shortly, but I would tell more about friends or food. Would a simple and short answer be sufficient as long as I explain another one deeper? 3. Would my examinator give me a hint when my Part 2 speech exceeds 1 minute? I always feel the necessity of cutting my speech short(

1. Having a mixed accent or an American accent is fine for IELTS speaking. 2. You don’t decide the length of time for topics and questions in part 1 and part 3 – the examiner does. In part 1, there will be about 12 questions which means one or two long sentences. In part 3, there will be from 4 to 7 questions (more or less) and so you need to expand all answers, give examples and showcase the level of your English more. 3. In part 2, your talk, you will have 1 to 2 mins for the talk. You should aim to talk for 2 mins to show fluency. The examiner will tell you when to stop. The examiner controls all time in the test.

Thanks for your answer. Time-management is my weakpoint. So, it’s good if it’s controlled by examiner. Still, I can’t understand about part one: according to your video those 12 questions should take less than 5 min, but it’s unclear how time is controlled. If my answer for 1 of 12 questions is too detailed, would examiner say “Next question!”? If my answer is too short, would he give me a hint to go on, instead of asking the next question?

In part 1, some questions will require only short answers – as the example I gave you. Other questions might require you to explain a bit more. At all times, the examiner will control the time. The examiner will interrupt you and move on to the next question if needed. This is very common. In fact, many students feel very uncomfortable when it happens because they think they did something wrong – they didn’t do anything wrong – it’s just a natural part of the test. So, be direct and add more – if the examiner wants to move on, he or she will stop you. It won’t affect your score at all.

It’s a relief. I will try not to fear being stopped by the examiner. Thank you a lot.

That’s right. It is just a normal part of the test. When it happens, just wait for the next question and continue as usual.

hi Liz, I got a couple of questions that popped up during my practice. Would you kindly answer them? 1) I am speaking about a special cake. At the end, as a conclusion, I say ” This is the most special cake I had in my life” Did I use the tense correctly? Because it is still my most special cake. But that cake is a thing of past and I had many cakes after that. So should I say ” That was the most special cake” ??

2) Is it correct to say ” current scenario “?

3) In one of the listening tests, the answer given is school fees. Instead, if I write educational expense because I missed it during listening and later wrote from my memory, will it be counted?

1. There is no conclusion in speaking part 2. This is not a formal talk. The WHOLE speaking test is informal. If you are checking your tense, you need present perfect “the most special X I have ever had …” 2. Don’t learn phrases to use. It is rare to use academic phrases in informal chats. 3. You can’t change the words of the answer. You must write answers exactly as you hear them.

In speaking part 2 , can we say words like ‘you’ and ‘I’ or do we have to speak in third person like ‘people’, ‘individuals’.

Dear Liz, I would like to share me answer 1. Yes, I am well known as dreamer person. It seems to me I dream every night when I go to sleep. 2. I do remember almost all the dreams for a short time and I forgot it. However, there were some espcial dreams that I never forget it. 3. Yes, I think that dream is one part of our life. was it wrong to use dream as it means “hope and ambition” rather than what we see in sleep? Unfortunately, it was the meaning that first came to my mind. But It seems that “having dreams” is mainly about sleeps.

When the question is “Do you often have dreams” it refers to sleep and the frequency. If the question is “What is your main dream in life?” this is about ambition and hope. But the examiner won’t mark you down because you misunderstood. You will still get marked on the language you produced. Remember, ideas are not marked in speaking, only the language is marked.

Another very weird dream that I experienced last month was something like this. I was bleeding profusely and no one came to my help. I was shouting all loud, people were walking by, but even then not a single person turned up for my rescue. This dream made me very uncomfortable and disturbed my inner being to the core. But since I have gained the ability to interpret my dreams, I realized that it was a clear reflection of my mental state of being. This bleeding part implies that I was in some urgent help and didn’t get any help from my near or dear ones. Since my childhood, I have always been insecure about my relationships – whether it’s my family or friends. I am extremely sensitive and get disheartened when my closest of people tend to ignore me. My dream therefore is a clear reflection of my insecure nature.

Life definitely throws challenges in the pursuit of our dreams, but in this situation either a person surrenders and gives up or continues to work towards it despite facing the obstacles. It is not easy to do so, but certainly not impossible also. If you dream, it needs to be translated into actions and sweat and blood need to be shed. Undermining the importance of dreams would mean causing offense to the agency of human imagination. History has it that men with an exceptional level of endurance power and strength of character overcame the most difficult of situations and never undervalued their dreams.

The great legend Chandragupta Maurya under the tutelage of his guru Chanakya dreamt of ruling over the dynasty called Nanda, which he was able to realize and founded one of the greatest empires recognized in Indian history. Likewise, the great emperor Ashoka took the world by storm at the time of his Kalinga victory and took a decision of not following the path of victory achieved through bloodshed and warfare. He used to dream of a world where righteousness or what is also called “Dharma” could prevail and he did whatever he could do in his capacity to realize his dream.

Therefore, even we should also not give up on our dreams and make it come true through our persistent hard work.

For example, college students may be interested in a topic on alcohol use, but they are already very familiar with a topic like the dangers of drinking and driving. In this case the speaker might concentrate his topic on the health benefits of red wine. This way, he has chosen a topic which interests the audience, but is likely to present new information which will not bore his listeners.

Finally, speakers should consider time limits when choosing an informative speech topic. A topic should be covered thoroughly enough that the audience feels as if most of their questions on the topic have been answered. On the other hand, a tight time restriction may prevent the speaker from adequately covering a very intricate topic. When time is limited, a subject which requires lengthy explanation should be avoided. The audience should leave an informative speech feeling as if they’ve gained new insight on a topic. Why acting out in dreams may signal a health issue

Wes Mills has a peculiar nighttime ritual that both stunned and amused his wife when they began to live together a decade ago. He would act out his dreams in dramatic fashion.

Some of the episodes involved him running in bed to escape an attacker, beckoning a little raccoon to eat out of his hand, and strategizing with fellow inmates in the midst of a prison riot.

“I used to laugh about it and call it ‘The Wes Show,’” said Eileen Mills, 49, of Taos, N.M.

But she doesn’t find it funny anymore.

Wes Mills, a contemporary artist with work at The Whitney and MoMA , hasn’t been able to hold a pencil still for over a year. His tremor started on one side of the body and now affects both sides. In January, at age 63, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Researchers say that dream enactment can indicate health issues, one of the most common and serious being the future onset of Parkinson’s disease. Wes Mills started acting out his dreams more than 10 years before his first tremor appeared. Other common conditions that can lead to dream enactment are obstructive sleep apnea and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Those who regularly act out their dreams should see a physician and undergo a sleep study to uncover the underlying reason for their behavior, experts say.

Why people act out their dreams

When shifting into rapid eye movement (REM) sleep , where dreaming occurs, the body normally enters a state of almost total paralysis to prevent dream enactment. But some people — approximately 1 percent of those over 50 — lose this paralysis.

This chronic sleep condition, known as REM sleep behavior disorder , or RBD, appears most often in late-middle-aged men, researchers have found.

“The brainstem has two linked nuclei that generate the protective paralysis of REM sleep, and when one of them, or their connecting pathway, becomes damaged, that releases muscle tone,” said Carlos Schenck , a psychiatrist at the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center. “People can then act out their dreams . ”

In 1986, Schenck and his colleagues first described RBD in four men and one woman, ages 60 or older. Most had long histories of injuring themselves or their bed partners with aggressive behaviors while asleep. One patient had attempted to strangle his wife while dreaming of fighting a bear, while another knocked over furniture during his dream of being a football player. The researchers noted that RBD is distinct from sleepwalking, which originates from non-REM sleep.

Dream enactment behavior has also been documented in severe obstructive sleep apnea , as it causes people to abruptly stop breathing for brief periods during sleep and partially awaken. Since these breathing cessations are most common and severe in REM sleep, they may act out their dreams, mimicking the symptoms of RBD, Schenck said.

About 39 million U.S. adults have obstructive sleep apnea , according to the National Council of Aging, but how many of these adults enact their dreams is not known.

Similarly, those with PTSD may show signs of reliving their trauma through dream enactment . Approximately 70 percent of patients with PTSD report sleep disturbances, and up to 70 percent have recurrent nightmares. However, no data exists on the prevalence of dream enactment behavior in PTSD, Schenck said.

The link between RBD and Parkinson’s

For those with RBD, the risk of Parkinson’s is staggeringly high . Individuals ages 50 and older with idiopathic RBD — that occurs spontaneously with no other health complaints or recent medication changes — have a 130 times greater likelihood of developing Parkinson’s disease compared with someone without the sleep condition.

“There’s nothing like this. … 80 percent of people who have this condition develop Parkinson’s disease 15 to 20 years later,” said Ronald Postuma , director of neurology at McGill University Health Centre.

RBD is 10 times better than any other clinical marker — for example, abnormal motor exam or loss of sense of smell — at predicting the eventual onset of Parkinson’s. RBD is strongly associated with other synucleinopathies , too, a group of diseases that includes Lewy body dementia and multiple system atrophy.

Misfolded alpha-synuclein , a protein, is considered to play a role in both idiopathic RBD, and Parkinson’s and other synucleinopathies. When the misfolded protein accumulates into large, toxic clumps in the brain, it can disrupt nerve cell function and cause symptoms of Parkinson’s such as tremor and stiffness.

The brains of people with idiopathic RBD have enough of misfolded alpha-synuclein to affect their REM sleep, but the harmful protein hasn’t spread farther in the brain, experts say.

More rarely, RBD can be brought on by a stroke, a tumor, or medications such as certain antidepressants.

What to do after an RBD diagnosis

RBD presents a unique opportunity for researchers to study early Parkinson’s disease, its progression and preventive therapies. For instance, Michele Hu , professor of clinical neuroscience at the University of Oxford, is co-leading a randomized placebo-controlled trial in patients who have RBD that tests whether a drug can reduce brain inflammation, an early feature of Parkinson’s.

“We know that lifestyle modifications like exercise also reduce progression in Parkinson’s, so there’s even more reason that it will be likely effective in RBD,” Hu said. “And that’s what I tell all the patients that we diagnose with RBD.”

People with RBD, diagnosed via a sleep study, can sign up for the RBD registry established by the North American Prodromal Synucleinopathy (NAPS) Consortium, which aims to develop treatments that will prevent or delay the onset of neurodegenerative disorders associated with RBD. The Michael J. Fox Foundation also is seeking people who act out their dreams to participate in the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) to identify biological markers of Parkinson’s risk, onset and progression.

“You have to plan your life accordingly — retirement planning, financial planning, take those trips with your family you’ve postponing,” Schenck said. “I think knowledge is really very helpful in terms of life planning, and not just doom and gloom.”

Eileen Mills has been trying to strike a balance between living in the moment, such as hiking with her husband and their dog, and making the necessary preparations based on his recent diagnosis such as long-term insurance. And Wes Mills still loves creating art. He has pivoted to things he can do such as sculpting and woodworking.

“When it became very apparent that he could not hold a pencil still, he didn’t even skip a beat. He just immediately started into a new medium,” Eileen said. “Wes is honestly the most extraordinary human being I know.”

Today, in a speech without precedent, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for Israelis to hold an election and vote out their current leader. Soon after, my colleague Annie Karni sat down with Schumer to understand why he did it. It’s Friday, March 13th.

Annie, this story begins with a speech. So let’s start there. Tell us about this speech.

I rise to speak today about what I believe can and should be the path forward to secure mutual peace and lasting prosperity for Israelis and Palestinians.

So last Thursday, without much warning, Chuck Schumer, the Senate Majority leader took to the Senate floor and started delivering what ended up being a really personal, really meaty speech about his Jewish identity and about Israel.

I speak for myself, but I also speak for so many mainstream Jewish-Americans, a silent majority whose nuanced views on the matter have never been well represented in this country’s discussions about the war in Gaza.

So he starts by describing himself and giving a sense of why he sees himself as a guardian of the people of Israel.

Of course, my first responsibility is to America and to New York. But as the first Jewish Majority Leader of the United States Senate, and the highest ranking Jewish elected official in America ever, I also feel very keenly my responsibility as a Shomer Yisrael, a guardian of the people of Israel.

But he quickly turns to the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and describes some of the suffering and displacement there.

Entire families wiped out, whole neighborhoods reduced to rubble, mass displacement, children suffering.

And he gets to his point very quickly that Israel has a moral obligation to do better.

Palestinian civilians do not deserve to suffer for the sins of Hamas. And Israel has a moral obligation to do better. The United States has an obligation to do better.

And that this is not in line with Israel’s values what’s happening in Gaza.

What horrifies so many Jews especially is our sense that Israel is falling short of upholding these distinctly Jewish values that we hold so dear. We must be better than our enemies, lest we become them.

That Israel’s approach to its war against Hamas in Gaza is not in sync with what he sees as the very meaning of being a Jew and what Israel is supposed to represent.

That’s right. And he also kind of frames it as this is not only hurting the Palestinians, but it’s hurting Israel.

Support for Israel has declined worldwide in the last few months. And this trend will only get worse if the Israeli government continues to follow its current path.

He thinks that when they’re prosecuting the war in this fashion, they are quickly losing global support, American support, their reputation on the world stage. And he thinks that Israel’s future is in jeopardy if it doesn’t have public support from the rest of the world.

The existence of Israel, he’s saying, is in jeopardy.

We cannot let anger or trauma determine our actions or cloud our judgment.

So Schumer in the speech carefully lays out that he thinks the only path out of this is a peace deal. He specifically says they need to work towards a two-state solution.

The only real and sustainable solution to this decades-old conflict is a negotiated two-state solution, a demilitarized Palestinian state, living side by side with Israel in equal measures of peace, security, prosperity, dignity, and mutual recognition.

And then he goes through four obstacles to such a peace deal.

Right now, there are four — four major obstacles standing in the way of two states. And until they are removed from the equation, there will never be peace in Israel and Gaza and the West Bank. The four major obstacles are — Hamas and the Palestinians who support and tolerate their evil ways; radical right wing Israelis in government and society.

The most shocking one that he lists —

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas —

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel.

I will explain each in detail. The first major obstacle —

And what specifically does Schumer point to about Netanyahu?

Prime Minister Netanyahu has lost his way by allowing his political survival to take the precedence over the best interests of Israel.

He has filled his government with far right extremists that Schumer called out by name in the speech.

He has put himself in coalition with far right extremists like Minister Smotrich and Ben-Gvir. And as a result, he has been too willing to tolerate the civilian toll in Gaza which is pushing support for Israel worldwide to historic lows. Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah.

And Netanyahu has ruled out what Schumer is saying is the answer, which is a two-state solution.

And he has shown zero interest in doing the courageous and visionary work required to pave the way for peace even before this present conflict.

The way he’s carrying out this war, even the Biden administration has criticized him for not doing more to mitigate civilian deaths.

He won’t commit to a military operation in Rafah, that prioritizes protecting civilian life. He won’t engage responsibly in discussions about a day after plan for Gaza and a longer term pathway to peace.

In Schumer’s view —

The Netanyahu coalition no longer fits the needs of Israel after October 7th.

He is stuck in the past.

Nobody expects prime Minister Netanyahu to do the things that must be done to break the cycle of violence, to preserve Israel’s credibility on the world stage, and to work towards a two-state solution.

And can’t do the things necessary to move Israel into the future past this war.

Five months into this conflict, it is clear that Israelis need to take stock of the situation and ask, must we change course?

Then he gets to what becomes the real big headline of this speech and makes it kind of the bombshell moment in US-Israeli relations that it became.

I believe a new election is the only way to allow for a healthy and open decision-making process about the future of Israel.

He says that as the war winds down, Israel should have a new election. And he makes it clear that he thinks Netanyahu should be removed from power.

I also believe a majority of the Israeli public will recognize the need for change. And I believe that holding a new election, once the war starts to wind down, would give Israelis an opportunity to express their vision for the post-war future.

The reason he is saying this now is because Israel doesn’t have to hold an election until 2026.

Two years from now.

Yes. That’s a lot of time for Netanyahu to stay in power. And according to Schumer, watch Israel’s reputation abroad erode. So what Schumer is saying is, hold that election much sooner, as soon as this war is over, and get rid of Netanyahu so Israel can correct course.

I mean, everything about that is highly unconventional.

It’s unprecedented. And this is why Schumer is really careful with his language in this section of the speech.

Of course, the United States cannot dictate the outcome of an election, nor should we try. That is for the Israeli public to decide.

Making it clear that Israeli voters will decide. He’s not trying to decide for them.

If Prime Minister Netanyahu’s current coalition remains in power after the war begins to wind down —

But then later in the speech, he also makes it clear that if Netanyahu stays in power, the US will have no choice but to take additional measures to pushback on him.

Then the United States will have no choice but to play a more active role in shaping Israeli policy by using our leverage to change the present course.

And he is not specific about what those are, but makes clear that there will be more pushback from America if Netanyahu stays.

The United States’ bonds with Israel is unbreakable. But if extremists continue to unduly influence Israeli policy, then the administration should use the tools at its disposal to make sure our support for Israel is aligned with our broader goal of achieving long-term peace and stability in the region.

Right. And I was listening to this section of the speech. And he uses the word, “tools.” And it definitely felt to me, and I wonder how you heard it, that the word “tools” meant money, American aid to Israel.

Almost certainly. The US sends several billion of military aid to Israel every year that is underpinning this war in Gaza. Schumer’s critical to moving that aid through Congress. And this is him sort of saying that — not explicitly, he doesn’t say money, he says tools. But that they have a lot of leverage over Israel. And this is also what makes the speech so remarkable in the first place, because Schumer is calling for these new elections and then following it up by saying we have other tools if this continues in the direction it’s going right now.

From the ashes, may we light the candles that lead to a better future for all.

Right. And what did feel so historic about this speech I think to so many of us is that Schumer is saying so many quiet things out loud, the first being that the US sees Bibi Netanyahu as a problem that needs to be removed, big enough saying that. And on top of that, he says, we are willing and ready, if we need to, to essentially turn off the US financial spigot to Israel if the Netanyahu government doesn’t leave or significantly change. And both of those just cannot be overstated for their enormity and their unprecedentedness.

It was a huge, historic, risky speech that Chuck Schumer made. I mean, I think this was probably one of the riskiest moments of his career, that he is putting himself out there to make this call and ramp up this pressure on Netanyahu.

The people of Israel at home and in captivity deserve America’s support.

Immediately after Schumer leaves the floor, Mitch McConnell, the Minority Leader, takes to the podium and blasts the speech.

It is grotesque and hypocritical for Americans who hyperventilate about foreign interference in our own democracy to call for the removal of a democratically elected leader of Israel.

Republicans try immediately to say —

We need to be standing with Israel. And we need to give our friends and allies our full support.

Democrats aren’t being anti-Bibi, they’re being anti-Israel.

Chuck Schumer speech was an act of courage, an act of love for Israel.

Democratic response is mixed. Some said he did a great job. He did something brave. And others —

I’ve got full faith and confidence in the Israeli people to make the right determination about what their future should look like and —

Said he crossed a line, and this was inappropriate. President Biden was brief in responding, but he called it a good speech.

I’m not going to elaborate on his speech. He made a good speech. And I think he expressed a serious concern shared not only by him, but by many Americans.

Many people interpreted that as the administration thinking that Schumer speaking out was helpful to their aims. And then there’s Trump.

Because he was always pro-Israel. He’s very anti-Israel now.

— who called any Jew who votes for Democrats to be self-hating and hate Israel.

Any Jewish person that votes for Democrats hates their religion. They hate everything about Israel. And they should be ashamed of themselves.

And finally on Sunday, Netanyahu made the rounds on some of the Sunday shows here.

I think Schumer’s statements are wholly inappropriate. I think we’re not a banana republic. The people of Israel will choose when they’ll have elections who they elect. And it’s not something that will be foisted upon us.

And in fact, he continues to say we’re going to invade Rafah. We’re going to keep up the aggression in Gaza. So clearly, he doesn’t feel the need to react in terms of his policies to the speech in any way.

But we have to finish the job. We need total victory. There’s no substitute for total victory.

Netanyahu’s message to Schumer basically is, go fly a kite. I don’t care what you say to me. I am not changing a thing about my approach to this war.

That’s right. This is a watershed moment for Schumer and a turning point in the US relationship to Israel in the middle of this war. And in part, because the reaction to the speech was all over the place, I was left with a lot of questions about why Schumer decided to do this in the first place. And that’s how I ended up sitting with him in Brooklyn on Sunday afternoon to ask him, why did you give this speech? What were you hoping it would do? Who is it for? And how does it fit in with your long standing relationship with Israel and with your own Jewish faith?

So Annie, tell us about this interview you end up having with Schumer in Brooklyn.

So we end up meeting at James Madison High School in Midwood, Brooklyn.

Nice to see you. Thank you. Want me to sign? Great. Thank you.

We walk in together. And he has to sign in at the front desk.

This is his alma mater a few blocks away from the house he grew up in the 1950s and ‘60s.

What a moment to come back here.

To where it all began.

Sort of. I guess that’s the golden nights.

It was a heavily Jewish neighborhood at the time.

OK. Now we can go — this is the library.

So as we’re walking around the school, he’s reminding me of what it was like to grow up in this neighborhood.

It was right after World War II. And America was advancing.

As a Jew in the shadow of the Holocaust.

Recent memory. There were ladies on my block who would show you the numbers on their arms from the camps. And I remember —

That was a very present reality for him.

And yet at the same time, for the Jewish people, for me, so much part of my existence, Israel was there. Well, out of the Holocaust came Israel. And we were so proud of Israel.

And he talked about how exciting and enamored he was with the creation of a Jewish state that came out of the Holocaust.

In the Holocaust, Jewish people, we didn’t fight back enough. And here is Israel fighting to create a homeland against overwhelming odds.

And in 1967, when Israel was fighting a war with Arab neighbors and was nearly wiped off the map, he was very invested.

When I walked around the halls of this high school, Madison High School, in 1967, I was walking with a transistor radio — it’s June, we’re ready to graduate — attached to my ear because I thought Israel would be pushed into the sea. That’s the connection. This is long before politics.

This was part of his identity in these formative high school years.

Right. The story he’s telling, which is familiar to many American Jews, is of growing up at a time when the Holocaust is still casting a very long shadow. And Israel is such a potent symbol of Jewish survival and strength. And for somebody like Schumer, the very idea of Israel, its very existence, tugs at their heart. They don’t live there, but it is a source of extraordinary inspiration.

That’s right. Absolutely. And by the time he gets into politics in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, he’s also very aware of the fact that Israel is a bipartisan issue. Democrats and Republicans alike steadfastly support Israel. They’re committed to the close relationship and giving aid and military support to Israel. And he is really proud of the fact that he said, whenever I carried legislation for Israel, I always had a Republican. That was a credo. And that, he thinks, is key to Israel’s success, that it’s bipartisan.

So how do I know Bibi? I’ve known him for a long time. I didn’t know —

It’s around this time that he first crosses paths with Bibi Netanyahu. He had gone to Harvard with Bibi’s brother, who was an Israeli war hero who died in combat and became a huge national figure. They didn’t know each other personally, but he said that kind of helped foster a connection with Bibi.

And in the beginning, Bibi did a lot of good things for Israel. He was the economic minister and created almost an economic miracle. We were so proud that Israel was doing startups and tech and all these things. When he first became prime minister, he was fine. Look, he was to the right, but not far right.

And when Netanyahu becomes prime minister, he wanted to back him. His gut was to stay with him and back Netanyahu even as other Democrats thought he was moving too far to the right.

Right. And Bibi’s rightward drift becomes extremely pronounced, so much so that he opposes President Obama’s plan to make peace with Iran through a nuclear deal. And Netanyahu actually travels to the US Congress to give a speech asking Congress, asking someone like Schumer, to reject that nuclear deal.

Exactly. And Schumer at the time was the rare Democrat who broke with Obama over the Iran deal.

You sided with Netanyahu against Obama.

Yes. And I talked to Netanyahu quite a lot.

He must have been thrilled with that vote.

And said it was a matter of conscience to protect Israel. And he voted against that deal.

I mean, suffice it to say, for a very long time, Chuck Schumer is a supporter of Bibi Netanyahu, so much so that he is even willing to break with his own Democratic president because he agrees with Netanyahu that policies like the Iran nuclear deal are bad for Israel.

Yes. I’d say that maybe he had some criticisms, but Chuck Schumer was Netanyahu’s best hope in terms of Democratic leadership in the United States.

But somehow, Bibi drifted way to the right. And one of the turning points was when he just embraced Trump so completely.

For Schumer, his views on Bibi start to change when Donald Trump is elected here. And Netanyahu becomes extremely close with him and starts to pursue policies that Democrats see as not at all in keeping with their values. So Bibi, together with Trump, pursues diplomatic deals between Israel and its Arab neighbors that do not take into account the future of Palestinians. His government expands settlements with Trump’s support. And basically what this means is that Israel is taking the land that would be essential to creating a two-state peace deal in the future.

And all of this infuriates Democrats who think these policies are making a two-state solution impossible, and taking away the leverage that Palestinians might have had.

He has now become so interested in self-preservation that he does —

Bibi also faces corruption investigations, which force him to bring very right wing politicians into his government.

And Schumer told me that he thinks he never would have made these alliances 10 years ago. So really, what happens during the Trump years, in Schumer’s mind, is that Bibi just gives up on Democrats and what they want for Israel and the Palestinians, and just wants to be aligned with Trump.

— and I’ll tell you in a meeting I had. He comes in to see me. It’s about 2018/2019. And I said, Bibi, I agree with you. The greatest short-term threat to Israel is the rockets Iran gives Hezbollah, and they put them in Lebanon and shoot them at Israel. But the greatest middle and long-term danger is you lose America, particularly the half of America that’s more progressive and/or the half of America that’s young. And by your embracing Trump, you are making that happen.

So in his mind, Bibi chooses Republicans and walks away from this history of bipartisan support.

That’s right. And that becomes even more of a problem after October 7th.

Well, just explain that, Annie.

Well, after October 7th, there’s broad support for Israel, who was just the victim of a terrorist attack against defenseless citizens. But as the war continues and the Netanyahu regime starts to take these aggressive actions in Gaza, that support starts to dwindle.

— United States, because I look at the numbers, and they’re rapidly decreasing. When you ask people, do you support Israel or the Palestinians, it’s getting all too close.

And in his mind, his fear that Israel will lose the support of America seems to be playing out in a really acute way. He can see it in his party, who’s really divided over what’s happening in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there.

I am worried, if Israel loses support from America, its future could well be over. I want —

And his fear, what he fears is that there could come a tipping point when the majority of this country does not support Israel, and it’s alone in a hostile goal Middle East without the necessary financial backing from the United States.

So as the highest elected Jewish official in America, and one of the leading Jewish — whatever you want, people in America, I felt an obligation to do this. This was not political.

And this is why he says he ultimately sat down to write this speech.

This is so part of my core, my soul, in Yiddish, my neshama —

In his mind, the goal here is to try to save Israel from Bibi’s actions, which he thinks imperil its future.

Once Schumer decides to write this speech, Annie, and to encourage Israelis to hold an election, and in that election vote out Netanyahu, I’m curious, how does Schumer tell you he thinks about the precedent that that sends, that the US will try to influence a foreign country’s decision about who should lead it?

I asked him about that. And he said he was aware that this section of the speech was the most delicate line he had to toe.

Did you consider — did you consider not personalizing it with Netanyahu and just calling for policy changes?

I didn’t think that would be enough. And he’s the fount of the problem. To just call for policy changes, I thought it wouldn’t pierce, it wouldn’t do anything.

It wouldn’t do anything. It would forgettable.

Yes. It’s so urgent and so important. I didn’t think it was appropriate to call for him to step down. But I thought the next step thing over, and say why I think he’s a bad leader.

And did you think —

So he was writing this speech with the notion of being careful about appearing to interfere front of mind. And he thought where he landed, going further than simply calling for policy changes, but stopping short of calling for her resignation and calling for new elections, he thinks he toed the line and didn’t cross it.

Got it. Now clearly, many people, including Netanyahu, disagree about whether Schumer crossed a line. But I’m curious if those people were his audience. I mean, who is Schumer really talking to with this speech? Does he think he’s speaking directly to Israelis and asking them to demand a new election and that they’re going to listen? Or actually, is he really talking to a more domestic audience, in particular his fellow Democrats, who are increasingly upset about this war, and potentially, it looks like willing to hold it against their party’s leaders?

He put this pretty simply when I asked him.

It’s intended for all people who love Israel and feel so conflicted by what’s going on there. The purpose of the speech is to say, you can still love Israel and feel strongly about Israel and totally disagree with Bibi Netanyahu and the policies of Israel.

He said that it was aimed, above all, at American Jews and non-Jews who love Israel. And what he wanted to do here was separate Netanyahu from Israel and make it crystal clear to people that you can be anti-Netanyahu, you can totally disagree with how he’s conducting the war in Gaza, and you can still be as pro-Israel as ever. He wanted to create this separation between Netanyahu and Israel and make Jews and non-Jews alike feel like it’s still OK to be pro-Israel.

This is kind of important, so I want to linger on it for a second, Annie. Schumer is telling you that what he’s really trying to do is give Americans a kind of new structure and vocabulary for thinking about Israel in this moment. And that structure and vocabulary is there is an Israel separate from Netanyahu. And so if you’re angry at Israel in this moment, you should really be angry at Netanyahu, not Israel.

That’s right. He’s asking them to blame Bibi, not Israel. That Israel is better than this, is better than Bibi, and to see it that way. It’s almost the same way that people who love America but hate Donald Trump would have felt during the Trump administration. That they still believe in this country, but they don’t believe in Trump.

That feels like a very complicated request that Schumer is making. Because the reality is that Israelis have repeatedly made Bibi Netanyahu their leader. So much so that if you’re an American, especially a younger American, and Schumer wants those younger Americans to separate Bibi from Israel, that would be pretty hard to accomplish. Because he’s been leader of Israel for as long as some of these young Americans have been alive. So how is Schumer thinking about whether what he’s asking for is really possible?

I mean, yes, it’s a little bit of wishful thinking. It’s true that a lot of Americans don’t really know the Israel of Schumer’s childhood that he’s able to remember. But they are not. He’s doing this in the middle of a six-month long war, where people are just horrified by the conditions in Gaza. And the Israeli government is the one that is carrying on this offensive.

But a lot of Jews, a lot of American Jews are really conflicted, because at the same time, they understand that Israel has a right to defend itself against Hamas. And I think that Schumer is trying to give voice to these conflicted, maybe middle-of-the-road politically American Jews who don’t know what to think about Israel right now, and do probably love Israel the way he does, but also feel awful about the images they’re seeing from Gaza.

So this call from Schumer for a new leader of Israel is kind of his way of resolving that internal conflict that people are feeling. But of course, it’s not clear if that election will be called. And even if it were called, it’s not clear whether Israelis would elect a new leader.

So I guess my question is, what then? Schumer’s speech does mention these other tools that the US has at its disposal. When would Schumer be willing to use those tools?

Yeah. I asked him about the question of, what then?

You don’t want a ceasefire, but is there like 30,000 more Palestinians dead —

Well, I wouldn’t I’d say — look, Israel — no, I have to, I just feel —

I said, what’s your red line? What is the civilian death toll that would have to be reached for you to say we’re pulling this funding?

You said in your speech, if something doesn’t change, then there’s the threat of American —

I didn’t say conditions and I didn’t say leverage. I just said America is going to look at it as a thing —

And you didn’t say exactly what —

No, because I didn’t want to.

You didn’t want to. But what would the scenario be where that would —

Well, you’d have to see. I couldn’t speculate on the future.

And he didn’t want to say.

Well, then why even give the speech if Schumer is not willing to talk about the real consequences for Israel, if there are no elections, and if Israelis don’t end up removing Netanyahu from office? If he can’t explain that, why give this speech?

I asked him that. And he kept coming back to the fact that, for him, this came from a deeply personal and emotional place, and a moral obligation that is central to him, to speak up for Jews and to stand up for the State of Israel. And he really dreads that Israel’s future, its very existence could be vulnerable, in the same way that it was when he was growing up, and in a way that he’s worked throughout his entire career to help fend off, and in a way, now Schumer at the pinnacle of his power as Senate Majority Leader, could be incapable of helping to fend off in the future.

No, I couldn’t look myself in the mirror if I didn’t do it. And then three, four months from now, the US has turned on Israel, and people, even my colleagues, are putting things, conditions and stuff, which will hurt Israel. I can’t do it. Couldn’t do it.

And I think that’s his deep terror about Israel’s future. And that’s why he felt called to do this speech now, he said, before it’s too late.

Well, Annie, thank you very much. We appreciate it.

On Thursday, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said that in the coming days, he plans to invite Netanyahu to address a joint session of Congress, an invitation that would first have to be approved by Senator Schumer.

On Thursday, the US government sued Apple for violating antitrust laws through practices that it says were designed to keep consumers reliant on Apple’s iPhone and unlikely to switch to a competing device.

We allege that Apple has employed a strategy that relies on exclusionary anticompetitive conduct that hurts both consumers and developers.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple has blocked rival software developers and mobile gaming companies from offering better options on the iPhone, resulting in higher prices for consumers. In response, Apple said it would vigorously defend itself in court and warned that if successful, the government’s lawsuit would hinder its ability to make the technology that customers want.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell spoke at the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank’s Macroeconomics and Monetary Policy Conference today.

The conversation, moderated by Marketplace’s Kai Ryssdal, began with a question on inflation . The conference appearance came on the heels of February's PCE report .

Powell’s first thought when he saw the February PCE inflation report Friday morning was that the data were “pretty much in-line with our expectations.”

Core PCE, which excludes food and energy prices, was up 2.8% on a 12-month basis. Headline inflation was 2.5% year over year.

“That's what we were expecting and it's good to see something coming in, in line with expectations,” Powell said.

Powell called attention to the very high inflation reading in January and that February's reading was lower. "It's not as low as most of the good readings we got in the second half of last year. But it's definitely more along the lines of what we want to see,” Powell said.

“We expect inflation to move down to 2%—but on a path that is sometimes bumpy," Powell noted later in the conference. "The question then is, are those just bumps or are they something more than bumps? ... We're just going to have to let the data tell us that. There isn't anybody who knows,” Powell said.

The timing of rate cuts hinges on the data. “We don't see it as likely to be appropriate that we would begin to reduce interest rates until the Federal Open Market Committee is confident that inflation is moving down to 2% on a sustained basis,” Powell said, noting that the confidence would come from "more good inflation readings like the ones we were getting last year."

The U.S. economy is growing at a solid pace and the labor market is resilient. That gives the Fed a chance to take its time to gain additional confidence that inflation is cooling before taking the important step of cutting rates.

Powell said to expect policymakers to take that time. “We're not going to take that step [to cut rates] until we are confident.”

Banks Are in a Good Place, but Supervisors Shouldn't Be Afraid to be Forceful

Although last year’s banking crisis seemed to catch regulators off-guard, Powell said he believes the U.S. system is now sound and there are lessons that can be applied.

“I would say the banking system is in a good place now,” Powell said. “I think things have settled down significantly.”

While there are some concerns that commercial real estate losses could impact smaller and regional banks, Powell said the banking system, as a whole, is in a good place. “The commercial real estate problem will be with us for some years,” he said, adding that there are only some banks caught in those headwinds. He said the Fed is working with those banks to ensure they have enough capital and can work through the challenges.

One of the lessons of Silicon Valley Bank's failure was that there are situations where bank supervisors need to be “forceful” when appropriate, Powell said.

“Bank supervision can tend to be pretty process oriented,” Powell said. There's a playbook, a checklist, and Powell said that can be a good thing because the process should be transparent so banks know what's expected and can do what's expected.

But that process can be slow when it needs to be fast. The art of bank supervision is balancing when to jump on things and when to take the time to be process-oriented.

“What's important is that the banks are well-capitalized, that they understand their risks, and manage them,” Powell said. “The more the banks take that on themselves and do a great job at it without us pushing them, the less we need to push.”

Powell said that when determining the path of monetary policy, the central bank’s “hand is a steady hand.” That's key when it comes to weighing economic data, particularly to measure the trajectory of inflation.

“We've been saying all through last year and this year that we're making progress. We've noted that progress, we haven't overreacted to it,” Powell said.

Powell noted that it’s important to be nimble and flexible. “We always have to be humble,” he said, particularly given the outlook is “always much more uncertain than most people think.”

The economy “can and often has recently performed in unexpected ways,” Powell said. But he believes the Fed is ready for that if that's what happens. “It's important to get this right,” Powell added.

There’s been some speculation on what would happen if the Fed cut rates and then had to reverse course. Marketplace’s Ryssdal asked Powell about it: “Would it be terrible if you reduce interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point and then the data changes and you have to change your mind?”

“It wouldn't need to be terrible,” Powell said. If that happens, he said the central bank would react and adjust.

Biden to join Barack Obama, Bill Clinton at star-studded fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall

WASHINGTON ― The stars are coming out for President Joe Biden's campaign fundraiser Thursday with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.

Stephen Colbert, host of CBS' "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," will moderate an "armchair conversation" with Biden, Obama and Clinton at the high-dollar event at Radio City Music Hall in New York, according to the campaign.

Actress Mindy Kaling, who starred in the television shows "The Office" and "The Mindy Project," is set to host the program. The evening will feature musical guests Lizzo, Queen Latifah, Ben Platt, Cynthia Erivo, and Lea Michele.

The fundraiser is expected to be the most lucrative to date for Biden's reelection campaign , which has significantly outraised former President Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee.

Fundraiser guests who pay enough can have their portrait taken with the three presidents by world-renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz, known for her pictures of celebrities.

Donors can also take part in a virtual conversation with the three presidents moderated by Biden campaign manager Julie Chávez Rodriguez.

The event is expected to raise at least $10 million and draw at least 3,000 people, Chris Korge, a veteran Democratic fundraiser and finance chair of the Biden Victory Fund, told NBC News . A photograph with all three presidents costs $100,000 and up, NBC reported, but the tickets to attend the program go for as little as $250 each.

Korge has organized the fundraiser alongside DreamWorks founder Jeffrey Katzenberg, the campaign's co-chair; Rufus Gifford, the campaign finance chair; and Anna Wintour, U.S. artistic director of Condé Nast.

The Biden campaign and other joint committees raised $53 million in February, giving the incumbent president $155 million on hand to spend − the most ever for a Democratic presidential candidate at this point in the election cycle.

Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey yesterday sued Media Matters in an attempt to protect Elon Musk and X from the nonprofit watchdog group's investigations into hate speech on the social network. Bailey's lawsuit claims that "Media Matters has used fraud to solicit donations from Missourians in order to trick advertisers into removing their advertisements from X, formerly Twitter, one of the last platforms dedicated to free speech in America."

Bailey didn't provide much detail on the alleged fraud but claimed that Media Matters is guilty of "fraudulent manipulation of data on X.com." That's apparently a reference to Media Matters reporting that X placed ads for major brands next to posts touting Hitler and Nazis. X has accused Media Matters of manipulating the site's algorithm by endlessly scrolling and refreshing.

Bailey yesterday issued an investigative demand seeking names and addresses of all Media Matters donors who live in Missouri and a range of internal communications and documents regarding the group's research on Musk and X. Bailey anticipates that Media Matters won't provide the requested materials, so he filed the lawsuit asking Cole County Circuit Court for an order to enforce the investigative demand.

"Because Media Matters has refused such efforts in other states and made clear that it will refuse any such efforts, the Attorney General seeks an order... compelling Media Matters to comply with the CID [Civil Investigative Demand] within 20 days," the lawsuit said.

Media Matters slams Musk and Missouri AG

Media Matters, which is separately fighting similar demands made by Texas, responded to Missouri's legal action in a statement provided to Ars today.

"Far from the free speech advocate he claims to be, Elon Musk has actually intensified his efforts to undermine free speech by enlisting Republican attorneys general across the country to initiate meritless, expensive, and harassing investigations against Media Matters in an attempt to punish critics," Media Matters President Angelo Carusone said. "This Missouri investigation is the latest in a transparent endeavor to squelch the First Amendment rights of researchers and reporters; it will have a chilling effect on news reporters."

Musk thanked Bailey for filing the lawsuit in a post that said, "Media Matters is doing everything it can to undermine the First Amendment. Truly an evil organization."

Bailey is seeking the names and addresses of all Media Matters donors from Missouri since January 1, 2023, and the amounts of each donation. He wants all promotional or marketing material sent to potential donors and documents showing how the donations were used.

Ads next to pro-Nazi content

Several of Bailey's demands relate to the Media Matters article titled, "As Musk endorses antisemitic conspiracy theory, X has been placing ads for Apple, Bravo, IBM, Oracle, and Xfinity next to pro-Nazi content." Bailey wants all "documents related to the article, or to the events described in the article."

The Media Matters article displayed images of advertisements next to pro-Nazi posts. Musk previously sued Media Matters over the article, claiming the group "manipulated the algorithms governing the user experience on X to bypass safeguards and create images of X's largest advertisers' paid posts adjacent to racist, incendiary content."

X said Media Matters did this by "endlessly scrolling and refreshing its unrepresentative, hand-selected feed, generating between 13 and 15 times more advertisements per hour than viewed by the average X user repeating this inauthentic activity until it finally received pages containing the result it wanted: controversial content next to X's largest advertisers' paid posts."

X also sued the Center for Countering Digital Hate, but the lawsuit was thrown out by a federal judge yesterday.
