What's more, consumption of goods and services, including leisure and recreation, is forecast to double by 2030. 3 “India’s impending economic boom,” Morgan Stanley, November 8, 2022. Adding a strong postpandemic travel recovery, and a growing appetite for international travel, these factors point to India’s significant potential for outbound tourism.

India is now the fifth-largest economy, and its population has surpassed China’s to become the largest in the world, at over 1.4 billion people.

Through nine charts, this article unpacks trends and opportunities in the Indian travel market. Selected country examples shed light on how destinations can enhance their value propositions to attract and delight Indian travelers.

India has huge tourism potential. If capitalised properly it can emerge as one of the leading sectors to contribute to GDP and also has the potential to augment employment. Lack of proper infrastructure coupled with lack of awareness and willpower act as major roadblocks deterring the desired success of this sector. The pandemic has also caused conspicuous losses for this sector but now since economy is recuperating if proper measures are implemented efficaciously, it can reshape our tourism sector. The visionary schemes like Swadesh Darshan or Dekho Apna Desh have the potential to increase tourism value while maintaining cultural integrity and ecological sustainability of the places. Dekho Apna Desh rolled out in 2020 envisages encouraging domestic tourism, urging people to visit places in India. India is a land of rich cultural heritage. The majestic temples with their mesmerising arts and awe-inspiring sculptures are the testimony of the height of craftsmanship and artistic expertise our ancestors attained.But most of them are sheltered in remote corners of the country, bereaved of their due recognition due to lack of awareness.Tourism can encash its true value when all these places are properly integrated through advertisement, logistics and developmental facilities.

I will state the example of the mesmerising terracotta temples of Bishnupur, Bankura in West Bengal which I was fortunate enough to behold two summers back. The intricate terracotta carvings in chala style of Jor-Bangla temple or the octagonal shikara supported by ornate terracotta carved walls of the PanchaRatna temple or the Madan Mohan temple with its flat-roofed structure and carved cornices surmounted by an intricately decorated pinnacle in an ekaratana style captivated us beyond words.Built-in the 17th century during the Malla dynasty dedicated to Lord Krishna, now these temples stand abandoned and uncared for with none to sing praise for such unparalleled beauty. As I stood there I couldn’t help thinking of the glory and majesty of those days when the land was resplendent and wealth was unending and these temples were the central business districts or downtowns around which civilisation revolved.

But now they stand in a state of despair with hardly any guides to reiterate the glorious history of these temples and their stupendous architectural designs. With proper infrastructure and lucrative drinking and eating options and right dose of advertisement, these places can attract a gamut of tourists and can accrue hefty revenue.They can also act as growth centers catering to the holistic development of the entire region by generating subsidiary employment.It could also expedite sales of handiworks of local artisans and craftsman.

These places can be inculcated in the thematic circuits of the Swadesh Darshan Scheme which will ensure proper budgetary support. With state and centre coordination, these areas can develop into effective growth poles with proper forward and backward linkages. Not only will it improve connectivity but also can increase tourism value while remunerating stakeholders, improving ecological integrity and sustainability of these places.So if tourism can be integrated with Skill India and Swachh Bharat and implemented accordingly prioritising the neglected areas then tourism as a sector can thrive in an unprecedented manner.

Tourism and Hospitality sector is one of the largest employment g enerating sectors in India and has been contributing towards generating a major chunk of Foreign Exchange Earning (FEE).
India is an experiential destination with its kaleidoscope of ancient culture and heritage, ancient systems of healing like Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, Naturopathy , natural beauty including 70% of the Himalayas and over 7500 km long coastline, rich flora and fauna, world class medical facilities a nd many other aspects make India the favoured destination for the discerning traveller.
The percentage of Foreign Tourist Arrivals visiting India for Medical Treatment has been increasing over the years and growing rapidly.
Over the past few months, all the major tourism indices such as domestic air passenger traffic, hotel occupancy and tourist footfalls have shown signs of recovery and are going back to pre-pandemic levels.

Governments Initiatives

Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme: The Government of India’s Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme was recently enhanced by ?50,000 crore, from ?4.5 lakh crore to ?5 lakh crore to benefit enterprises in hospitality and related sectors such as hotels and restaurants, marriage halls, travel agents, tour operators, adventure and heritage facilities.
The guiding principles include promoting sustainable, responsible and inclusive tourism in line with our civilisational ethos.
The policy also aims to give impetus to digitalisation, innovation and technology through the National Digital Tourism Mission and skilling through the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Skill Mission
Theme based schemes for the integrated development of circuits for improvement of infrastructure in the country have been launched by the Ministry of Tourism to enable tourists to experience the destination fully.
The Ministry has also been working with the Ministry of External Affairs to identify 20 Indian missions abroad with the highest tourist footfalls to India and build country-specific strategies to attract foreign tourists.

Travel and tourism industry accounted for around 6% of India's GDP in 2022. The country has therefore been focusing on boosting tourism.

The travel and tourism industry in India is projected to generate revenue of nearly $24 billion in 2024, according to industry promotions body India Brand Equity Foundation. At an estimated annual growth rate of 9.6% between 2024 and 2028, the industry is also expected to reach a market volume of $34.25 billion by 2028.

Revenue trend in India: In 2023, the tourism industry recorded a revenue of about $20 billion, according to Statista . Hotels accounted for the largest share of revenue last year. This year, however, this is expected to shift and package holidays are likely to be the biggest revenue generator in 2024. According to an ANI report , package holidays market is expected to reach 65 million travelers by 2028.

India’s efforts to boost tourism: The country has been focusing on boosting tourism, and has announced 100% foreign direct investment in tourism-related ventures in order to facilitate growth of the sector. Efforts are also being made to preserve heritage sites in India while creating quality tourism infrastructure to enhance visitor experience.

The road, rail, and air transportation infrastructure is also being improved. New highways, indigenous superfast trains , and regional airports are being concurrently developed across the country to make travel more convenient and inland destinations more accessible.

Radisson Opens First Hotel in Odisha

Radisson Hotel Group has announced the opening of Pramod Lands End Resort, a member of Radisson Individuals in Gopalpur, Odisha. The 100-room resort marks the group’s entry into Odisha. Radisson’s newly appointed area senior vice president for South Asia Nikhil Sharma said that Gopalpur has untapped tourism potential, and the company’s move to open a property in the location is part of its focus on tier 2 and 3 cities in India.

Radisson has more than 160 operational and developing hotels, with over 50% of its portfolio located in tier 2 and 3 markets. In 2023, the company signed 21 properties , and is especially focusing on key spiritual destinations and inland locations to gain from the first-mover advantage.

Fly91 Expands Network to Agatti, Jalgaon

India’s newest airline Fly91 is set to add two more destinations to its network this week, taking its operations to six destinations. Starting Thursday, the airline will fly between Goa and Agatti, Lakshadweep. It will also commence flights between Goa, Jalgaon and Hyderabad on April 18.

The budget airline commenced its operations last month and is currently flying between four destinations. It aims to enhance regional connectivity in India and has plans to expand its network to 50 cities over the next five years. For this, the airline is planning to induct 30 aircraft to its fleet.

ITC Hotels Open Storii Solan in Himachal Pradesh

ITC Hotels has announced the opening of Storii by ITC Hotels, The Kaba Retreat, Solan in Himachal Pradesh. The boutique property currently has 22 rooms and suites, with six cottages to open soon.

Storii by ITC Hotels serves experiential travelers. The company is focusing on expanding the brand as CEO Anil Chadha believes that it is quickly becoming a preferred brand in the segment. With the addition of the Solan property, four hotels are operational under the brand. More Storii hotels are set to come up in Kolkata, Rishikesh, Manali, Prayagraj, and Kufri as it is aiming to enhance its presence in leisure destinations.

Delhi Airport’s Conversion of Terminal T2 to All-International Delayed Till Next Year

The conversion of Delhi airport’s terminal T2 into an all-international terminal is delayed till April 2025, according to a Times of India report . The airport has three terminals of which T1 and T2 are fully domestic, while T3 handles domestic as well as international traffic. With T1 undergoing an expansion to double its capacity to 40 million passengers, the airport operators decided to convert T2 into an all-international terminal temporarily to better handle international traffic.

The initial plan was to begin the conversion of the terminal in July or August this year , after the expansion of domestic terminal T1 becomes operational in June. This would close T2 for a few months. However, the authorities have now decided to postpone the conversion work until after winter, as they want all terminals to be operational during the season. This is to avoid a repeat of winter last year when a key low-visibility runway was shut for repairs during the foggy season and led to delays.

EaseMyTrip Subsidiary Opens Hotel in McLeod Ganj

Spree Hospitality, a subsidiary of online travel company EaseMyTrip, has announced the opening of ZiP By Spree Hotels Bella Heights in McLeod Ganj, Himachal Pradesh. The boutique property is a part of Spree Hospitality’s portfolio of more than 30 hotels.

The company focuses on boutique and mid-market segments, while operating full-service properties across India. It was acquired by EaseMyTrip in 2021.

Domestic tourism has also got a big boost. The number of domestic tourist visits increased from 270 million in 2002 to 650 million in 2009 with an average annual growth rate of 13.4 percent.

On the negative side, tourism may damage the environment. In order to accommodate a large number of tourists, sprawling resorts are built. Seventeen such areas/circuits have already been identified with the help of the private sector and corporate houses. It has also been decided to take up four-five focus centers as ‘Special Tourism Areas’ in consultation with concerned state governments for integrated development.

Hotel accommodation is an important segment of the tourism industry, with huge potential for employment generation and foreign exchange earnings. To give impetus to this sector, the government provides tax benefits and other incentives to encourage the hotel industry. The industrial policy of the Centre has now placed hotels and tourism-related activities as a priority industry. Foreign investment and collaboration are now facilitated under the new economic policy. Up to 51% foreign equity is now granted automatically. 100% investment from non-resident Indians is allowed. Now the Department of Tourism has streamlined and simplified the rules regarding the grant of approval to travel agents, tour operators, and tourist transport operators so that their services to tourists are standardized and are more broad-based, for both international and domestic tourists. Approval, once granted, is valid forever, provided no complaints are received and the necessary documents are submitted annually. With a view to attracting more chartered flights to India, a system of granting clearance has been formulated. An air-conditioned rake of the Palace on Wheels train, which has been operational in Rajasthan for quite some time now has been very successful and popular. Similar trains are proposed to be operated in few other popular sectors.

A new range of hotels known as Heritage hotels has been introduced to add to the attraction of tourism in India. This class includes hotels opened in palaces, havelies, castles, forts, and residences built prior to 1950. As these traditional places represent and reflect the Indian culture of the past, they have been very popular among tourists. The heritage scheme rightly aims to ensure that such properties and landmarks of our culture and heritage are not lost due to decay and disuse. It also aims at providing additional room capacity for the tourists. So far, fifty properties have been classified in the heritage hotel category, providing a room capacity of over 1500 rooms. Guidelines have also been formulated for the conversion of heritage properties into heritage hotels and their approval is at the project-planning stage.

Tourists are mostly fond of seeing sights, visiting ancient archaeological monuments, purchasing unique objects, including dresses, idols, and paintings. They are also fond of watching or participating in adventure games, traveling in toy trains, etc., and observing strange festivals, events, and functions. Many also like such things as monkey tricks at the Jakhoo hills in Shimla or horse riding in Kufri (Shimla).

A tourist is essentially a person who tries to escape from the everyday pressures, tensions, and routine work, by deciding to go on a holiday. Some like to go to remote places, deep inside the mountains or jungles, others prefer to visit a religious place or a well-known pilgrimage. Still, others choose seaside resorts or a city of full historical monuments.

India is a blessed country. It is a virtual tourist’s paradise. It has lofty mountains, vast deserts and seashores, dense forests, and river valleys. It also has a 2000-year-old historical heritage reflected in its forts. temples and ancient ruins, India is a virtual treasure house of different classical and folk art forms, viz. dances, theatre, paintings, sculptures, pottery, poetry, ornaments, dress material, food, customs and traditions, languages, scripts and scriptures, and literature, both written and spoken. This gives a tourist unlimited options to choose from.

Although the concept of tourism, as an industry never developed systematically in India, sporadic individual efforts and the ad-hoc approach taken by the government have led to the stilted development of this industry and its infrastructure.

The realization that India has a vast tourist potential and the right ingredients for the development of a flourishing industry is of a recent origin.

The impetus currently being given to tourism has already borne fruits. The gradually enlarging tourist traffic has helped in creating a climate favorable to tourism in India.

More and more efficient facilities for tourist in terms of accommodation, recreation, transport, shopping and development of new tourist spots is the need of the hour. Maintenance and preservation of our archaeological monuments and samples of our ancient art on paper, fabric, wood, ceramic, and metal for generating tourists and scholar’s interest should go hand in hand

Care should also be taken to develop other characteristics of Indian cultures, like hospitality, etc. so that tourists who are not interested in five-star India, and who wish to see India at close quarters get an opportunity to do so.

There is also another category of tourists-the domestic tourists. Tourists of this kind generally take their family on holiday to other parts of the country. It is not unusual for them to travel in large groups or prefer package tours. Not only are they budget-conscious, but they also look for bargains and cost-effectiveness in transportation, accommodation, food, and other amenities. Since domestic tourism is extremely important for any country, it is of paramount importance to develop low-cost facilities for the promotion of tourism.

Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) and few other agencies are playing a significant role in tourism development.

Tourism today is a rapidly growing industry the world over. To ignore such a goose that lays golden eggs would be committing the folly of the gravest kind.
