Thesis | Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management

Thesis is the creative elaboration of a professional task (scientific, research or research development) in written form as defined in the requirements of the training program. By solving the task the student relies on his/her studies using national and international literature under the guidance of a supervisor. By preparing and defending thesis students who complete the program prove that they are capable of the practical applications of the acquired skills, summarizing the work done and its results in a professional way, creatively solving the tasks related to the topic and doing individual professional work.

Step-by-step guide to writing thesis

• Registering for the course "Thesis"

If you know which topic you would like to choose or which field of food engineering you are interested in, you should contact an instructor from the Faculty whom you would like as your supervisor. If he/she accepts your topic, you can register for his/her "Thesis" course at the beginning of the semester via the NEPTUN system. You can sign up for the course usually through the Department or the International Office: main building, office 56. (Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences and Environmental Management).

• Regular consultation with the supervisor

During the semester students have to give account of the current state of the thesis to the tutor.. The grade earned for the "Thesis" course is not identical with the grade received for the final evaluation of thesis. The precondition for completing the course must be negotiated with the supervisor. In general 80% readiness of the thesis is the minimum requirement. The grade earned for the course reflects the process of working on thesis. Grade can be obtained for the course, even without having submitted thesis previously. However, submitting thesis is one of the requirements of taking the state exam.

• Submitting thesis

Thesis Guidelines (Structure, format, referencing, declaration, statement)

Plagiarism is strictly forbidden! Students have to sign the Declaration which must be bound into thesis.

To be handed in: 

• 1 bound copy (After the final exam this bound copy is given back to the student. The department stores theses exclusively in electronic version.)

The following must be bound into the thesis (in this sequence):

• Declaration – signed by the student
• Statement – signed by the student
• (Confidentiality Agreement: only if the company requests it, as the topic is confidential. It can be requested in office 56, building A.)
• CD of the thesis (see details below)

Thesis in electronic version

The CD/DVD should contain the following data in block capitals (using an alcoholic pen is recommended for writing on the CD):

• student's name,
• stundent's Neptun-code,
• student's major,
• title of thesis,

Before submitting the thesis you have to upload it to DEA (Debrecen Electronic Data-system). The process of this is the following:

• Go to http://dea.lib.unideb.hu
• Log in (on the top right) with your Neptune data
• Click on „Új feltöltést kezdhet”
• You’ll see: “Gyűjtemény kiválasztása” and click on the arrow pointing down so that you can choose from the list. On the bottom you’ll see the list. Choose : Theses, „következő”
• You will see „Tétel leírása” where you have to fill in the missing information.
• Go and ask for a certificate from the library at MÉK that the uploading was completed

Some extra info for uploading:

• don’t write with capital letters, only the first letter
• when you write your supervisor’s name, don’t use prof, dr, phd etc
• when they ask about key words, write 3-4 words, which characterises your thesis best. They should be written in a separate line each, under each other by pushing “Add”
• when you have to summarise your thesis write 6-8 sentences what it is about and click on the “következő” button
• Browse your thesis in Pdf form with write- and print-protection. If your Pdf file is not protected, then push “A PDF MÁSOLÁS ÉS NYOMTATÁSVÉDETT FORMÁRA ALAKÍTÁSHOZ”, which is in red
• Check the previous data, and if there is a mistake, you can make corrections by pushing “Helyesbítés”
• at the point of “Licenc medadása” choose licence type :Creative Commons OR click on the next button
• click on “Licenc elfogadása” and then click on “Feltöltés befejezése” and log out of DEA

You don’t need to hand in a CD to the library.

Submission deadline for thesis: if the supervisor requests it, the thesis has to be submitted 10 days before the date given in the academic calendar of the year   12.00 noon, room 56. Extension to the deadline for the submission of thesis is not possible.

•  Improving thesis with a fail mark

If thesis is evaluated with a fail mark by the referee, the head of department may decide to allocate a new referee to review thesis. If thesis is evaluated with a fail mark by the head of department, the student is not allowed to take the final exam and is supposed to prepare a new thesis. Conditions on resubmitting thesis are defined by the program coordinator.

Useful information for 5th year students.

Dear Students,

I would like to inform you about the details of Thesis.

The deadline to submit your thesis electronically to the Registrar’s Office is March 4, 2024 (Monday) until 12:00 noon.

You have chance to submit your thesis in late until March 18, 2024 (Monday), in this case you have to pay late fee (in the 1stweek 3.000 HUF/day, from 2nd week 6.000 HUF/day).

If the thesis is not accepted by one of the opponents, the student must rewrite it, taking into account the opponents’ critical comments. If one or both opponents request corrections before the thesis is accepted, the student must revise and submit the thesis within 1 week, taking into account the critical comments.

Thesis defense: middle of April, 2024. I will inform you aboutthe schedule later.

The following documents must be sent electronically (in one email) in separated PDF files to the Registrar's Office:  [email protected]

1. Thesis The title page does not need to be signed and stampedby the head of department and supervisor. For those who are not writing their thesis in the Pharmacy department, please contact the Registrar’s Office and we will send you a sample for the title page!

2. Endorsement of your supervisor and the head of the department to the submission of the thesis.    It should be signed and stamped.

3. Evaluation by your supervisor. It is a short evaluation about your work etc.

4. Registration form Your supervisor should fill the form out.

5. Plagiarism declaration

6. Abstract/summary/introduction with your name and thesis title

Final Exam - MSc in Molecular Biology | Faculty of Medicine

Final exam - msc in molecular biology.

2023/2024/2 semester state exam days are June 11-12-13, 2024.  in the Coordinating Centre for International Education building, floor 3. Graduation ceremony is June 30, 2024 10:00 AM  in the Ceremony Hall of the Main Building Application for the graduation ceremony with "Registration for graduation ceremony 2024" Neptun request. In the hour before the graduation ceremony, there will be a rehearsal, which the participants must attend.

The deadline for submission may be extended with up to 2 weeks, upon which the related fee – determined in the Student Fees and Compensation Regulations of the University  of  Debrecen – shall be paid.

Degree theses shall be submitted in two copies

   - one as an email attachment ( [email protected] )    - one copy written to CD to the Registrar’s Office. The following shall be attached to the thesis:

   - the front page of the thesis with signatures and institute seal    - supervisor endorsement for Thesis (Neptun request) with the signature of the supervisor and head of      the Educational Organizational Unit, and the seal of the institution    -  a summary of the degree thesis bearing the name of the author and the title     -  the student’s declaration that the degree thesis is his/her independent work 

After the review is complete the diploma thesis shall be uploaded to the Electronic Archives of the University and National Library of the University of Debrecen (DEA) before the state exam.

This is a prerequisite for the final exam!

The procedure of the state exam:

There will two types of themes („A” and „B”) You have to pick one question, both A and B themes. After that you have one hour to work the chosen questions out. Then you have to defend your thesis. For that you have to make a PowerPoint presentation. This presentation needs to be copied on a pendrive and you have to bring it to the state exam with yourself. The presentation must clearly indicate what is your own work and what is not. The theoretical background of the works must also be known for a successful defense. After you finished your thesis defense you can start your oral exam with your worked out questions. If you want to start with B title or A title or the other way around it is completely up to you.  As soon as you finished the oral exam the committee ask you to leave the room. During that time the state exam committee will evaluate your thesis defense and your oral exam. After the state exam committee made their decision you will be informed about your exam grades, and your diploma's qualification.

Step-by-step guide to writing thesis

1. Registering for the course "MSc Thesis II" - during registration period

If you know which topic you would like to choose or which field of engineering management you are interested in, you should contact an instructor from the Faculty whom you would like as your supervisor (possible supervisors, thesis topics here: https://eng.unideb.hu/sites/default/files/thesis_topics_engineering_mana... ). If he/she accepts your topic, you can register for his/her "Thesis" course at the beginning of the semester via the NEPTUN system. You can sign up for the course usually through the Department or the International Office (Faculty of Engineering).

2. Thesis Topic Announcement Form - till 12 March, 2020

During the semester you will have two guiders, one instructor from the Faculty and one external supervisor. The external supervisor (referee) is usually an expert from a company where you can do for example additional research work or measurements according to your topic. If the topic doesn't require external supervisor, you can work also just with your departmental supervisor. 

After you have a topic, you have to negotiate its details with your supervisor(s), fill out the Thesis Topic Announcement Form and submit it to the Department (room 206).

I will need the form two ways:

1. the hard copy of it with the original signature of the supervisor(s),

2. sent to me via e-mail (without signature).

This is needed because your bound thesis will contain an official page (the so called Thesis Sheet) with:

• serial number of the thesis,  
• name of the student, name of the specialization, full-time training, 
• title of the thesis, 
• name of the internal tutor (supervisor), 
• (name of the external tutor, name of the company if relevant)
• signature and stamp of the head of department.

The first version of the announcement form usually changes as soon as work goes forward (usually the titel is modified). In this case, please send me the latest version as soon as it is fix. 

3. Formal requirements of the thesis

Plagiarism Declaration

Plagiarism is strictly forbidden! Students have to sign the statement which must be bound into thesis. The Plagiarism Declaration must be filled out electronically.

4. Submitting thesis - till 25 November 2019

To be handed in: 1 bound copy of the thesis AND the electronic version uploaded

a. bound copy (After the state exam, the student gets it back, it is his/her own example. The department stores theses exclusively in electronic version. Please note the external supervisor may request an additional bound copy of the thesis.)

The following must be bound into the thesis (in this sequence):

  1.   Thesis Sheet (with serial number and signature of the head of department) – can be requested from the secretariat (it is not the sheet signed by the company!, see above),   2.   Plagiarism Declaration – must be filled out electronically and signed by the student,

To be handed in with the thesis, but not bound :

    1. Max. 1 page abstract in English containing the name of the student, the title of the thesis, and the brief summary of the topic, with readable signature,      2. Max. 1 page abstract in Hungarian containing the name of the student, the title of the thesis, and the brief summary of the topic, with readable signature.     The abstracts are not identical with the “Summary” chapter of the thesis, though obviously similar to its content. It contains the title of the thesis, (if applicable: the company which gave the background for preparing thesis), the objectives, topics and tasks elaborated by the student, the methods applied, the conclusion or evaluation in some sentences, applicability of the results.     Layout of the abstracts:     Max. 1-page long (DIN A4); 2400 characters (including spaces); font and font size: Times New Roman CE 13 ; full justification; line spacing: 1,5; margin: normal.

b. Thesis upload

Following documents must be uploaded:

•     the whole text of thesis (in Ms Word or PDF), file name: Givenname_Firstname_Neptuncode_THESIS
•     colour scan of Thesis Sheet with original signature, file name: Givenname_Firstname_Neptuncode_Thesissheet
•     colour scan of Plagiarism Declaration with original signature, file name: Givenname_Firstname_Neptuncode_Plagiarism
•     photo of the student, file name: Givenname_Firstname_Neptuncode_Photo
•     abstract in English, file name: Givenname_Firstname_Neptuncode_Abstract_English

5. Thesis Review Report - till 10 December 2019

The completed and signed Thesis Report Review is to be submitted in room 206 (Department of Engineering Management). Please contact your internal supervisor regarding the review report!

As the above form is two pages long, the reviewers are kindly requested to sign both pages.

6. Improving thesis with a fail mark

If thesis has been unequivocally assessed with a fail by the referees, then the candidate is not allowed to take the final exam and is supposed to prepare a new thesis. The candidate has to be notified of the decision. Conditions on resubmitting thesis are defined by the program coordinator.
