My last holiday was a five-day trip to Prague in the Czech Republic. I know Prague well because I lived there when I was at university, more than ten years ago.

Instead of staying in a hotel, I stayed with one of my old friends. It was so much fun, and a little bit like my old life. I wanted to do all the same things I did in my university days, so I visited the university. It has changed a lot and looks more modern. I also went to the supermarket near my old house. I loved seeing all the different foods. I was really happy to find my favourite cheese and chocolate biscuits but they were a bit more expensive than I remember!

We did some touristy things too. We walked up beautiful Petrin Hill and around the castle. The views of the city are amazing up there. We walked across the historic Charles Bridge. My friend's flat is very near the TV Tower so we saw the famous baby statues climbing up it. Those things haven't changed, of course.

2. Use adjectives to add detail to your descriptions.

3. Write clear and simple sentences and organise your ideas in short paragraphs. Give each paragraph a different topic.

I want you to know that I am very happy and enjoying my vacation quite a bit. The destination on this vacation has been the Colombian Caribbean coast, We arrived two days ago, this is a very nice experience. Yesterday I discovered the window to the world that is located in Barranquilla, as well as the boardwalk, they are very warm places but above all very visited, as the afternoon fell I went to visit some of my husband's brothers. Tomorrow we will get up very early to travel a few kilometers and be able to visit Cabo de la Vela, in La Guajira, we will leave at 6 am, because we must be in Uribia Guajira at 3 pm, there the tour guide will be waiting for us, who will be the one in charge of directing this adventure. I also had the opportunity to visit Cartagena de Indias and its beautiful beaches, I really liked getting to know the beach, the sea and the people who live there, But what I liked most was being able to visit Cabo de la Vela and learn a little about the reality of the Wayuu culture, being able to enjoy the beautiful landscapes and sunsets that this beautiful place offers.

My last was holiday three-week trip to Fez in Morocco. Fez it’s my hometown so I know it well because I lived there for 26 years. I went to visit my family there and I stayed at home, every day I was invited by my sisters and brothers, they made me delicious dishes and we had a good time together. I’ve been seeing my friends every day in the café, we’ve been seeing football matches and we’ve been talking about different topics. In this holiday I made many things important for me, I had driving courses to be confident when I’m going to buy a car, in the same time I had English courses.

My last holiday was a three-day trip to Thua Thien Hue in Vietnam. I always want to go there, so in the summer of last year, I decided to take a trip to Hue with my family.

We booked a small hostel near Hue Walking Road. We stayed in a twin room, which was clean and had full amenities. The owner was very friendly; he showed us good restaurants, attractions, and how to deal with sellers in the market. We tried local foods such as Bun Bo Hue, Banh Xeo, Banh Bot Loc, etc. The food in Hue is cheap and amazing; I thought that I could eat it all day!

We did some touristy things too. We visited Hue Capital and had a chance to learn more about Vietnam's history. The architecture is very majestic and beautiful. We also went to Thien Mu Pagoda. It is one of the most sacred temples in Vietnam, so we prayed for health and happiness and wished everyone good luck. In the evening, we walked across the historic Trang Tien Bridge. It was so beautiful at night; there were a lot of people walking there.

It was three amazing days. I felt so relaxed and hope to visit more places in Vietnam.

My last holiday was a two-day trip to Baguio in the Philippines. I had lived there before for five months. So I decided to go back for just a visit on my holiday. Unfortunately, there was heavily raining as we got off the bus. Otherwise, getting a taxi was super hard, and we were waiting for around an hour. Fortunately, I got home safely and I made so much fun with my friends. I visited the old places that I often did because it made me happy and refresh. In conclusion, I had so much fun spending my last holiday in Baguio.

I remember last year when I went with friend to the beach in summer. My Lastsummer holidays was 2days and 3 nights trip to Ngwe Saung Beach in Myanamr . Ngwe Saung, is a beach resort located 48 km west of Pathein, Ayeyarwady Region, Myanmar. In 2014, the town of Ngwesaung had 10,732 people.The beach is 5hours drive with no traffic away from the principal city of Yangon. Ngwe Saung is well know for An unspoilt 15 kilometres stretch of silvery sand and modern amenities have made Ngwe Saung a popular destination for less budget conscious tourists from Lower Myanmar. I booked for our stay at a hotel near the beach, name was "Grand Paradise Hotel ". My friend and i prepared everything we needed on our trip as light food and soft drinks to have on the way to the hotel. And also we prepared necessary clothing for the sea, sun cream and some essential medicines. After 5hours of driving we arrived the hotel at 12PM afternoon and went to our rooms to rest change clothes and take all what we need to go to the beach. This Hotel is near the beach,all services was good and room are cleaned, wide and nice. We put our bags on the table and went to swim in the sea and then went out for lunch that my friend ordered from a fish restaurant . The Crab ,Lobster and fish was fresh and tasty and we enjoyed our meal very much. After lunch we sat under the canopy enjoying the sea view, refreshing breaths ,listening to music and playing fun games. OH really nice Ngwe Saung beach Myanamr.

My last holiday was far away in time in different reasons. We were at black sea coast on September so there where not so much other people. We was drinking a wine that was cheap there and going some excursions

My last holiday. Last summer, in particular on the last weekend of June, I decided to visit Granada, an amazing city in Spain. I visited Granada for the second time with my family, my wife, and two daughters. I was so happy because I visited Granada sights, especially Alhambra Palace, and Civilization Museum. We arrived at the hotel by bus at 11 a.m. The hotel was wonderful and clean, and the food they offer was delicious. My family really liked the traditional typical dishes of Granada, in particular the dish named Baella. During the holiday, I met some of my Spanish colleagues and they invited us to visit their house which is located in a nice village in the city suburb. Really, I liked this place for the large landscape, calmness, and the kind people who live in. On the fifth day of our holiday, we walked around the city and saw the old city which has been built above the mountain. So, you can see the whole city from above it. Despite the enjoyment that we have got, the negative thing about that holiday was that we spent so much money and also many friends need to buy some things from there, so I bought some souvenirs and I hope that I can keep one for myself to remind of that divine place. By and large, this holiday was great and unforgettable thanks to my Spanish friend, Gaspar, who provided me with a Guidebook which makes my trip easy and coy.

My last holiday was four days on São Miguel dos Milagres with my family. We stay on the beach house of my grandpa. There is a pool, and four rooms in that. There we go to the beach, to some interesting restaurants, to a beach clube and to an ice cream shop. I love that travel and i'd love go back to São Miguel dos Milagres.

On the first weekend in March, we took an amazing trip to Barcelona. We went by train from Atocha station and the journey lasted two and a half hours.

When we arrived at the historic Barcelona Sants station, we took the metro to Plaza de Tetuan, which is where we had the apartment. We left our baggage and went to visit the city centre, Las Ramblas, Plaza Catalunya, La Boqueria Market, Paseo de Gracia, etc. On Sunday, we saw the beautiful Sagrada Familia which is my favourite landmark. Later, we went to the incredible Nou Camp stadium to see the Barça game against Valencia. After the game we visited the official store and did some shopping but everything was very expensive. On Monday, before returning to Madrid we went back to the Nou Camp to take a guided tour of the trophy room, changing rooms, benches, and the VIP box.

At the end, we went to the apartment to take the suitcases and so, we took the metro to the Sants station where we boarded the high speed train back to Madrid.

I go to Thailand for a camping holiday, It was fun I go caving on the first day, I see many bets are sleeping on top of the cave.(no time to finish)

How to Talk about Your Last Vacation in English

Talking about your last vacation is a good topic to prove how much you have learned about the simple past.

In this lesson, you are going to learn how to talk about your last vacation in English.

A basic question and answer about this topic are:

Where? who with? How long?
I went to Hawaii with my family for a couple of weeks
I went to Spain with my friends for a couple of weeks

The first set is basic questions that usually require some basic details to be answered:

These are some questions that require a few more details to be answered

All of those questions are really helpful when you have an oral test.

These are five examples of people describing their last vacations.

Pay Careful attention to verbs in the past form since you will see lots of them. You will also see verbs in the present in some instances.

The verbs in the past forms will be in bold so it is easier for you to remember them.

Don’t think that those examples are hard to create, you just need to create simple sentences and in some instances provide more details.

Last year, I had the chance the amusement park, Zarcero, and Ciudad Quesada in a day. I wen t with my daughter, my wife, and some friends.

We woke up early that day and our friends drove us to the amusement park, my daughter enjoyed the many rides available, we ate pizza and we left around three.

Then we headed to San Carlos, on the way to San Carlos we stopped by the catholic church and took some pictures of ourselves in the gardens.

We got to San Carlos around 5:00 PM, we had dinner there, picked some people up, and headed home.

Last year I spent my vacation at the beach. I traveled with some friends of mine. We arrived at the beach at 8:00 AM, we immediately went swimming then we made some sandwiches for lunch.

After lunch, we went running and we left the beach before 6:00 PM.

We drove back to the hotel and we had dinner there. Around 9, we called our friends and we met outside a dance club because we wanted to dance.

We spent like three hours in the club and we got back to the hotel.

Last year, I went to Cartagena with my family and my best friend Luis. We visited my cousins Mayra and Alejandra. I hadn’t met them before, so I was really excited to meet them.

My first impression of them it was very good, they are friendly and fun. We went to visit many places but my favorite place was Barú island.

That island is amazing, it looks like a paradise, I took many pictures of every single we did.

The food was excellent. We ate shrimp rice and a shrimp cocktail. I had a great time with my family. We spent three amazing days in Cartagena.

Hello. I’d like to share with everybody the great time that I had on my last vacation. I went to Conchal Beach with my friends. We stayed at a small hotel right in front of the beach.

The first day we were there we took surfing lessons, my friends and I had so much fun hanging out at the beach.

There was another beach nearby, probably a five-minute walk and you are in Brasilito beach. We watched the sunset and we set a fire at night.

We spent most of the three days on the beach and we usually went to a club at night located in a place called Tamarindo. There is a beach in Tamarindo too. It was one of the most special times I’ve had in my life.

Instead of staying in a hotel, I stayed with one of my old friends. It wa s so much fun.

I wanted to visit all the places I lived, so I visited Baja Verapaz. It has changed a lot. I also went to the supermarket near my old house.

We did some touristy things too. We went to Tikal. Nature is amazing up there. We walked across the historic monuments.

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
The rising action (the beginning of your story)
The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

How to Write an Essay on How You Spent Your Summer Vacation

Writing an essay on how you spent your summer vacation is a classic way of starting a new school year. Think about this essay as an opportunity to tell a story about your summer while reflecting on the experiences you had. Choose a memorable moment you had this summer and start crafting your essay, giving as many details as possible.

Choosing a Topic

Step 1 Look back on mementos you kept from the summer.

These can also make nice visual aids if you are asked to present your essay.

Step 2 Make a list of the things you’ve done over summer vacation.

A list might be full of things like babysitting, attending a camp, working at a local store, taking a road trip, etc. This type of brainstorming can help you pick major events and other important moments from your summer.

For example, maybe you spent your summer traveling around Japan. Think of a memorable moment you had while traveling — maybe you walked up a mountain in the pouring rain — and write about this moment, adding lots of details.

For example, if you're writing about spending time at the beach, your outline could remind you to talk about the sandcastle building contest you entered, the dolphins you saw, and the ice cream you ate every day.
Details might be what the other sandcastles looked like, how far away the dolphins were, and what kind of toppings were on your ice cream.
Your outline is just to help you organize your thoughts — it can be written by hand or typed.

Crafting the Essay

Step 1 Focus on your feelings, interactions, and thoughts.

Instead of saying that you worked in a pet store, ate a PB&J sandwich, and walked home every day, talk about more than just your actions. You could talk about which pets are your favorites to work with, how it felt to eat the same sandwich every day, or what you thought about on your walk home.

Step 2 Use your 5 senses to explain your experiences.

Using sensory details like these will help your readers visualize and engage with your writing. These help your audience make your experiences feel real to them, even though they weren't there.

Step 3 Describe activities you did in each place you went.

For example, instead of saying “I went to the beach this summer,” try saying “I spent my summer swimming in the frigid water at Virginia Beach.” The more details you can provide, the more engaged your reader will be.

Step 4 Choose precise, descriptive adjectives.

Instead of saying “the burger was really good,” you could say, “the burger was juicy and filling.”

Step 5 Revise and edit your essay carefully.

Don't just rely on spellcheck. It will help catch some errors, but it will miss some things, too.
Ask a parent or other adult to read over your essay too, if you'd like.
Setting your essay aside for a little while will give you a fresher perspective when you go back to revise it.

Step 1 Start with a strong introduction.

Make sure your conclusion doesn’t just copy the introduction.

There are many topics that you may be required to write an essay on in your English language classes. But writing an essay about how you spent your last holiday is one of the most enjoyable. The reason is because it brings back lovely memories as you thoughtfully reflect on your holiday experience and put them in writing.

As you write, your goal is to capture your readers’ attention and sustain their interest from the beginning of the essay till the end.

You can achieve this goal by:

writing clear and simple sentences.
using so, but, and, because and other transition words to ensure that your ideas flow smoothly throughout your essay.
being as descriptive as possible by using adjectives that paint a vivid picture of what you are saying.
being honest and authentic as you share your feelings about your experience.

I will give you a basic outline that you can develop into the compelling essay you have in mind.

Basic Outline for Composing an Essay on “How I Spent My Last Holiday”

Here is a basic outline that will help you to write a good composition about how you spent your last holiday:

Introduction

You need to begin your essay with a catchy opening sentence that would grab your reader’s attention. Then quickly introduce the topic or purpose of your essay, and say where you went for the holiday and what you did.

Body Paragraphs

Just like you would do in the body of any other essay, divide your holiday experience into several key events or activities.

Then describe each event or activity in details in different paragraphs. Remember that, as much as possible, each paragraph should focus on a specific event or activity.

The number of paragraphs would depend on the number of words the essay is expected to cover.

Whatever the target word-count, ensure that your essay is vivid and engaging by using sensory details. It’s simple. Just describe what you saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt during each experience.

Then reflect on the significance or impact of each event or activity. How did it make you feel? What did you learn from it? Did it change your perspective on anything? And so on.

This is where you end your essay. A good conclusion would provide a brief summary of the key points of your essay, including the lessons you learned.

You can tell whether the holiday experience met your expectations, and how you feel about it even at the point of penning down your essay. Then state whether you plan to do anything in the future drawing inspiration from your holiday experience.

Sample How I Spent My Last Holiday Essays

The following are sample essays of different word counts on how I spent my last holiday. You can choose any composition that comes close to your own holiday experience and use it to craft yours.

My Relaxing Holiday 200 Words

My last holiday was amazing! I did not travel to any new or interesting location, but I had a lot of fun staying home. I took time to enjoy early morning sleep every day. This alone felt like a treat after waking up early for school the entire term.

In the afternoons, I went outside to play with my friends. We played the soccer ball around in the park, and would enjoy pretending to famous athletes.

Sometimes during the holiday, it would rain. And when that happened, I just stayed inside and got cozy. I got a good book and devoured it with a mug of hot chocolate by my side. I also liked watching funny movies with my family and munching on popcorn.

In some evenings, we had barbecues in the backyard. We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, while Dad told us stories about when he was a kid. I don’t think that anything can feel more special than spending so much time together.

Although I did not travel anywhere, my holiday was full of fun and relaxation. I feel recharged and ready to go back to school now!

My Last Holiday Adventure 250 Words

Since I have been spending my holidays, none had been as enjoyable as the last one. When we vacated last term, I spent two weeks at home in order to assist my parents in farm work. After this, I left for Onitsha in order to visit some places of interest.

I visited the modern and popular Niger bridge which links Onitsha and Asaba, Mid-West. I also visited the famous Onitsha Main Market. It has no rival in comparison in West Africa just as Ibadan Liberty Stadium has no comparison in West Africa. When I was being taken round the great Onitsha Main Market by a friend, I observed that traders in their respective stalls felt at home. Some of them tuned in their radio sets. They were happy.

I spent one week at Onitsha and departed for Enugu. When I was at Enugu I visited the Eastern Nigeria Parliament, and I saw Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Statue just close to the house of Assembly. I also visited Enugu Airport and several other places of interest. I spent five days in Enugu and departed for Lagos by a train. “Lagos Limited”, and that was my first time of entering train. When I reached Lagos, I hardly believed that it was a town in Nigeria. It was very beautiful indeed just like London.

When I was in Lagos, I went to the House of Representatives, the Senate, National Stadium, Air- port, Tinubu Square and other places of interest.

I spent 5 days in Lagos and returned home to resume School. I wrote a story on all my observations in the journey.

My Last Holiday Essay 300 Words

Last summer, I went on a trip that I will not easily forget. This is because it meant much more to me than just a vacation; rather, my perception was changed.

I had never been in Thailand before the holiday but only heard of its beauty. Finally visiting the country made my holiday worthwhile. The place was so different from home! Their market was busy with many colorful items for sale and their food was so delicious. I tried several new and amazing dishes, and they were all lovely. While in Thailand, I couldn’t fail to notice how beautiful their temples are with roofs gold plated and other carvings done wonderfully.

I am an outdoor kind of person. That is why spending time in nature during my holiday made me very happy. Some days I would hike through forests while others would find me relaxing at the beach. On one fine morning, I woke up early to witness sunrise over New Zealand’s mountains. It was simply breathtaking and that made me feel alive.

Lastly, to add some holiday fun into it; i did some daring activities too. For instance, skydiving and bungee jumping were included in my itinerary. Although at first scared, it turned out pretty awesome! I learned that it’s good to challenge yourself and try new things sometimes.

Looking back on my last holiday, I feel very grateful for all the experiences I had. I discovered a lot of new things and also made new friends. Yes, the holiday is over, but the memories I made will stay with me forever.

Write an Outline Before Writing Your Essay

Regardless of whether you spent your summer break in Madison, Wisconsin or Madrid, Spain, you should plan out what you’re going to write before diving in. Make a list of what you’ve done over the summer so that you can later narrow down a focus for the essay itself. You need to write the -ing form. A different form of the verb is used in part two of the lesson.

1. How to Give Basic Information About Your Vacation

Begin your answer by saying where you went, who with and how long for.

For example:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks.
I went to Thailand with a group of friends for ten days.
My girlfriend and I went to Rome for a long weekend.

A long weekend means you go for three or four days, usually Friday-Monday or Saturday-Monday, maybe because there’s a public holiday on the Monday.

What about you? Where did you go for your last vacation? Who did you go with, and how long for?

Pause the video and make your own sentence. If you want extra practice, write your sentence down. If you really want extra practice, write down three different sentences!

Next, let’s see how you can talk about what you did on your holiday.

2. How to Describe What You Did On Vacation

What do you like doing on holiday? Do you prefer a more active holiday, maybe with lots of adventure sports and activities, or would you rather do something more cultural?

Or, maybe you just like relaxing on the beach. Whatever you prefer, it’s good if you can say something about how you spent your time on holiday.

Let’s look at some examples and some good vocabulary for you to use:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks. Mostly, we went hiking in the hills and mountains nearby. We also just hung out in the village, playing cards and eating.

Do you like hiking? Hiking means going for longer walks, often in the hills or the mountains.

If you hang out , you spend time without having any particular goal. If you say we just hung out in the village , you mean that you spent time there in a relaxed way.

Let’s look at our second example:

I went to Thailand with a group of friends for ten days. We did some sightseeing in Bangkok: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and so on. Then we hit the beaches in Krabi for some sun, swimming and cocktails!

Sightseeing means visiting the famous places in a city. You can go sightseeing or do sightseeing .

For example, if you go sightseeing in Paris, you’d probably visit the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre Dame and so on.

Saying we hit the beaches is a very informal way of saying we went to the beaches.

You could also say we hit the bars or we hit the clubs. Using hit suggests you’re going somewhere to party and have a good time, so you probably wouldn’t use it with other places.

Let’s do one more example together:

My boyfriend and I went to Rome for a long weekend. We went on a walking tour of the centre and the Vatican. Mostly, we went to restaurants and cafes and sampled as much of the local cuisine as we could fit in our stomachs!

If you go on a tour , for example a walking tour, you pay for a guide. Often, tours are in big groups. Do you prefer to go on a tour with a guide, or do you like to explore by yourself?

Sample means to try many different things. We sampled as much of the local cuisine as we could means that we tried many different dishes.

Alright, over to you! What did you do on your last holiday? Did you go hiking in the mountains, go sightseeing, or sample lots of delicious food?

Try to make two or three sentences. Use the language from this section if you can.

Pause the video now and make your answer.

Next in talking about your vacation in English, let’s see how you can describe the place you visited in more detail.

3. How to Describe Where You Went on Vacation

Can you think of three adjectives to describe where you went for your last vacation?

Here, try to avoid general adjectives like nice or good. Try to find specific adjectives. Your answer will be more interesting!

Let’s look at an example:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks. We stayed in a very nice village surrounded by nice mountain scenery.

Do you see what we mean? Saying nice doesn’t say much. This isn’t a very good example. How could you make it better?

Here’s one way to improve it:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks. We stayed in a very picturesque, sleepy village surrounded by some dramatic mountain scenery.

What do you think dramatic scenery means?

It means the mountains were very impressive and beautiful.

Picturesque is another way to say ‘beautiful’. If something is picturesque, it’s beautiful like a painting. You can use picturesque to talk about scenery and places.

Sleepy means that the village was very quiet and peaceful.

You can see that using more specific adjectives like picturesque, sleepy or dramatic makes your answer more interesting and expressive.

Of course, you’ll need different language to talk about different places. Let’s look at another example:

I went to Thailand with a group of friends for ten days. Bangkok is a very cosmopolitan place but it could be a little overwhelming because there was so much going on! Then we went to Krabi, which has some stunning beaches.

Do you know the meaning of the key words in this answer?

Cosmopolitan describes a city which has many different people and cultures mixed together.

Overwhelming describes something which is very intense. For example, a city can be overwhelming if there are lots of people, noises, sights and smells all around you. There’s so much to take in that you don’t know where to look!

Stunning means ‘very beautiful’.

My girlfriend and I went to Rome for a long weekend. It’s a fascinating place but it’s quite touristy, too. The best thing was the food , which was out of this world.

Here, we used the adjectives fascinating, touristy and out of this world. Could you explain what these mean?

Fascinating means ‘very interesting’.

Touristy describes a place where tourism has grown too much. Often, if you describe a place as touristy, you mean that it’s lost some of its original atmosphere.

Finally, if you describe something as out of this world, you mean it’s really good and you enjoyed it very much.

Now, it’s your turn. Can you describe the place you visited on your last vacation?

You can use the adjectives and language from this section, or you can find your own words and phrases. Try to use at least three interesting adjectives in your answer. Pause the video and do it now, either speaking or writing.

How was that? Remember that you can always review a section if you found something difficult.

Next, how can you talk about what you liked or disliked on your vacation?

4. How to Describe What You Liked or Disliked

What’s the best vacation you’ve ever had? What about the worst vacation you’ve ever been on?

What made these holidays so good or so bad?

Let’s see how you can talk about the positives and negatives of your holiday. Here’s our first example:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks. It was relaxing but by the end I was getting quite bored.

This is good, but it’s always better to add a reason if you can:

I went to the countryside with my family for a couple of weeks. It was relaxing but by the end I was getting quite bored, because each day was pretty similar.

What does that mean, each day was pretty similar? Do you know?

It means that you did the same kind of things each day, so there wasn’t much variety from one day to the next.

Let’s look at our next example:

I went to Thailand with a group of friends for ten days. I loved Krabi, because it was like nowhere I’d ever been before. I wasn’t so keen on Bangkok. It’s a cool place but it’s a bit big and noisy for my tastes.

Saying it was like nowhere I’d ever been before means that the place you went to was really unique.

You can use I wasn’t so keen on… to talk about something you didn’t like very much in the past. For example:

I wasn’t so keen on the food in the hotel.
I wasn’t so keen on the museums—I didn’t think they were very interesting.

Adding for my tastes after you give your opinion shows that this is just your perspective. You would use it after you give a negative opinion, to soften your idea slightly. For example:

It’s a nice area, but it’s too developed and touristy for my tastes.

Adding for my tastes makes this sound slightly softer and less direct.

Okay, let’s do one more example together:

My girlfriend and I went to Rome for a long weekend. I think I liked the general atmosphere most of all. Walking around the little streets in the centre felt like being in an old film. I wish it had been less crowded, though.

Here, you can use the phrase I liked … most of all to talk about your favourite thing from your vacation.

Use I wish plus the past perfect ( had done ) to talk about something in the past which you would change if you could. For example:

I wish we’d had more time to explore the city.
I wish we hadn’t stayed in that awful hotel.

Okay, your turn again! What did you like and dislike about your last holiday? Make at least two or three sentences, and say them out loud. Remember to give reasons to support your ideas.

Now, you should be ready to put everything together into a longer answer.

5. Making a Longer Answer

To make a longer answer, you need to:

Say where you went, who with, and for how long.
Say what you did.
Describe the place.
Talk about what you liked and disliked.

Let’s do an example using language from the lesson:

I went to Thailand with a group of friends for ten days. We did some sightseeing in Bangkok: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and so on. Then we hit the beaches in Krabi for some sun, swimming and cocktails! Bangkok is a very cosmopolitan place but it could be a little overwhelming because there was so much going on! Krabi has some stunning beaches, and I loved it there, because it was like nowhere I’d ever been before. On the other hand, I wasn’t so keen on Bangkok. It’s a cool place but it’s a bit big and noisy for my tastes.

Do you see how using simple phrases and ideas, you can build a full, clear, detailed answer? We’ve added some linking words, but otherwise this is only using language you’ve seen in this lesson.

Let’s do one more example. This time, we’ll use original ideas:

I went to Siberia by myself for three weeks. I travelled around, did some hiking and camping, and explored the countryside. I was near Lake Baikal, which is a huge lake with mountains and villages dotted around the sides. It was beautiful in a wild way, and the emptiness gave me a real feeling of isolation and solitude. I liked the people I met—everyone was so open and welcoming. On the other hand, even though it was summer, the nights were so cold! I wish I’d taken a warmer sleeping bag.

This time, I’m using different ideas and some different language, but I’m still following the same structure.

Now, can you make a longer answer like these?

Try it! If it’s difficult, review the video or use a dictionary to get the vocabulary you need.

Practise your answer several times, until you can do it fluently and comfortably. You could also talk about other vacations you had, not just the last one. Being comfortable speaking about topics like this can help you in conversation and in tests like the IELTS Speaking Exam !

How can you talk about a vacation with your friend in English? You can ask questions to learn about how your friend’s vacation was. For example; Where did you go for your holiday? Did you have a good time there? What did you do there mostly? You should learn how to answer these questions and more in clear, natural English. And also, do you know the differences between holidays and vacations? This is a difference between British and American English you should be aware of. And both words have the same meaning.

You can start your answer with some simple language. You can think about how to give basic information about your vacation. You can begin your answer by saying where you went, how long for and who with. As an example; I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. I went to Italy with my family for ten days. My boyfriend John and I went to Paris for a long weekend. A long weekend means you go to Paris for three or four days, usually Saturday to Monday or Friday to Monday. Maybe because there’s a public holiday on Monday. So, can you talk about your vacation? Where did you go on your last holiday? Who did you go with and how long is your vacation? You can try to make your own sentences about your last vacation. If you need extra practice, you can write your sentence down. If you really need extra practice you can write down three different sentences.

Secondly, do you know how you can talk about what you did on your holiday? What do you like doing on holiday? Do you prefer relaxing on the beach? Or do you prefer a more active holiday with lots of activities and adventure sports? Or would you rather do something more cultural for your holiday? Whatever you prefer, it’s better if you can say something about how you spent your time on holiday.

Here’re some examples and some good vocabulary for you to use when you talk about a vacation;

I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. Mostly, we went skiing in the hills and mountains nearby. We also just hung out in the village, eating and chatting together. What do you think about hiking? The definition of hiking is going for long walks, often in the hills or the mountains. If you hang out, you spend time without having any specific goal. If you say I just hung out in the village with my friend, you mean that you spent time there in a relaxed way.

If you think about the second example; I went to Italy with my family for ten days. We did some sightseeing in Rome; Love fountain, coffee shops. Then we hit the beaches in Cinque Terre for sun, swimming, and cocktails. As you can understand, sightseeing means visiting famous places in a city. You can do sightseeing or go sightseeing.

As an example;

if you do sightseeing in New York, you’d probably visit the Statue of Liberty National monument, Empire State Building, Central Park and so on. And also, saying we hit the beaches is a very informal way of saying we went to the beaches. You can also say we hit the nightclubs or we hit the bars. Using hit suggests you’re going somewhere to party and have a good time. So, you should not use it in other places.

One more example;

My boyfriend John and I went to Paris for a long weekend. We went on a walking tour of the centre and the Eiffel Tower. Mostly, we went to cafes and restaurants and sampled and ate as much of the local cuisine as we could fit in our stomachs. If you go on a tour, for example, a walking tour you pay Money for a guide. You should try to avoid general adjectives like good or nice. You should try to find more specific adjectives. Then, your answer will be more interesting.

For example;

I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. We stayed in a very nice village which is surrounded by nice mountain scenery. As you can understand, saying nice doesn’t say much. You can make his sentences better. You can say this; I went to the countryside with my friends for two weeks. We stayed in a very sleepy, picturesque village which is surrounded by some dramatic mountain scenery.

Do you know what dramatic scenery means? It means the mountains were very beautiful and impressive. Picturesque has the same meaning as beautiful. If something is picturesque, it means beautiful like a painting. I mean, you can use picturesque to talk about places and scenery. The meaning of sleepy is that the village was very peaceful and quiet. So, using more specific adjectives like sleepy, picturesque or dramatic makes your answer more expressive and interesting. Then we went to Santa Monica, which has some stunning beaches. Do you know the meaning of the adjectives here? Firstly, cosmopolitan describes a city which has many different cultures and people mixed together. Secondly, overwhelming describes something which is very intense.

A city can be overwhelming if there are lots of people, sights, noises and smells all around you. And also, there’s so much to take in that you don’t know where to look. The meaning of stunning is very beautiful.
